New Figures reveal Race hate attacks on the rise in London Racist and religiously motivated hate crimes reported to police have surged in London, according to figures by Scotland Yard — with some of the biggest increases being attacks on Jews and Muslims. Met Police attribute the rise in recorded hate crimes to factors including greater victim confidence and reaction to world events, such as the Charlie Hebdo shootings in France or violence flaring in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. The news comes as integration think tank British Future today published a

The total number of racist and religious hate crimes across London rose by almost 28 per cent last year, from 9,965 reported incidents to 12,749. Crimes listed as anti-Semitic were up 138 per cent from 208 to 495. Brent and Hackney saw some of the biggest increases. Attacks on Jewish Londoners include

The number of crimes classified by police as Islamophobic increased by more than 47 per cent, from 529 to 778, particularly in Merton, Islington, Southwark and Westminster. According to data compiled by Tell Mama, which measures anti-Muslim attacks, most street attacks were on females by white males. Offences range from verbal abuse to causing physical harm. The Met figures were not indicative of arrests, charges or convictions.

Princess Charlotte Baptised At Intimate Service

Three young Iraqi Yazidi women, who suffered horrific sexual abuse at the hands of their ISIS captors, are joining forces with Birmingham-based activist group, Upstanding Neighbourhoods, to launch a new campaign called ‘Open Your Eyes’

Upstanding Neighbourhoods, wants to help young people talk to others who may be feeling isolated or drawn to the lies that ISIS is spreading, and has launched this campaign to give young people a voice to reveal the truth about the abhorrent group, and share the impact it has had on their lives.

The online platform exposes the truth about the terrorist group and connects young people in the UK, Syria and Iraq, who have been affected by ISIS, so they can share their personal experiences and views.

Open Your Eyes is also supported by the charity AMAR Foundation, which is helping the three women share their shocking testimonies of rape and torture at the hands of ISIS.

Princess Charlotte has been baptised at an intimate service in Sandringham attended by just over 20 guests. Nine-week-old Charlotte was pushed to her christening by the Duchess Kate Middleton in a vintage Millson pram which the Queen used for two of her own children. As guests arrived the world also got its first glimpse of the complete family of four Cambridges. Guests included the Queen and Prince Philip; Charles and Camilla; the Middletons; and the five godparents, four of whom were accompanied by their spouses.

The christening lasted about 30 minutes before the family departed for Sandringham House. Charlotte, who had not been seen in public since leaving hospital following her birth, was dressed in an elegant cream lace and satin royal christening gown. The fourth in line to the throne was christened by The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, supported by the Reverend Canon Jonathan Riviere. She was baptised using the ornate silver gilt Lily Font which is usually part of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London.

COVER STORY

Equality in Faith: Bradford’s Muslim Women’s Council calling for first all- women managed mosque in the UK by By Hasina Momtaz Bradford; a city that is less than 25 square miles may possibly be about to make history in the UK by setting up the first allwomen managed mosque committee in a district that already houses 110 mosques – all managed by men. The call (although not to prayer as that will still be done by men under the proposed plans) is being led by the Muslim Women’s Council (MWC), an organisation that believes that women have a vital role to play in all aspects of public and private life. Their Chief Executive, Bana Gora, believes women are an effective force for social change and are critical to the current debates taking place about the role and place of Muslims in British society. Whilst this may perhaps be a new concept here in the UK, women in Islam first achieved equality 1, 400 years ago when Prophet Muhammad granted women hither to non-existent rights over property, inheritance, marriage and divorce, family life and other matters so women’s equality is not something that is new or strange in the religion. However the precise nature of the roles and responsibilities of women in the public sphere is a subject which has always been debated, both within and outside Islam. The plans were first

unveiled by the MWC at their Daughters of Eve conference in May 2015, following on-going consultation with various parties including the local community, Muslim scholars and academics. The keynote speaker at the conference was Baroness Sayeeda Warsi. The MWC describe their vision as compelling and one which they say is driven by the Islamic principle of inclusiveness. Although there will be separate spaces for men and women, their plan is for a facility managed by women, primarily for women. This includes both born Muslims and new Muslims as well as the wider non-Muslim community. They are exploring various options and are carrying out consultations on the detail of the project with local, national and international scholars and experts. One thing they are sure on is that women will not lead mixed congregational prayers and say this will not take place under the MWC umbrella. This is in line with both the principles of Islam as well as the views of the wider community, who also say they would not support women giving the Adhan (Muslim call to prayer). Speaking to the Asian Sunday, Bana Gora said that the MWC had carried out an audit of local mosques focussing on services provided to women. The audit found that access was the biggest problem above all. According to Gora,

the way women feel has profound consequences for younger generations who are taught that Islam treats both men and women as spiritual equals yet the practice within mosques contradicts the principles. “In an era in which many young people feel that their faith is no longer relevant, or are going to extremes, we want to be able to provide a safe space for them to question, learn and grow whilst having an appreciation of their heritage as well as the opportunity to make informed choices relevant to the 21st Century”. At a recent consultation meeting, Gora told the audience that they want an all-inclusive holistic space which is a centre for promoting Islamic education, scholarship and excellence for women promotes shared values and is fully accessible to all communities and accommodates all schools of thought. Services at the centre would include an Islamic divorce service, bereavement service, legal advice, services for young people and the elderly and a parenting advice service. The centre aims to have projects to feed the homeless, encompass a gym and health facilities, a café and bazaar area and above all to be a spiritual retreat and sanctuary. Other participants at the consultation event also expressed their views to the audience.

Imam Qari Asim MBE, imam of the Makkah Masjid in Leeds, said: “We talk about Prophet Muhammad being the greatest feminist, we talk about how he changed the world view, how he gave women the rights that they have and enjoy but the real question is are those concepts translated into real life today? We need to implement them. So I am, in a way, surprised that in 2015 we are having a conversation whether or not women should be going into a mosque, whether or

not women can pray in a mosque”. Dilwar Hussain, Founder and Chair of New Horizons in British Islam told people: “For me there are really two important institutions in Islam. That is the mosque and the family and I think what we do at the moment is (sic) that instead of bringing these two institutions together we have arranged these two institutions in the way that they collide. We really need to reintegrate these two institutions…that

for me is a real vision of how an integrated community would actually be able to live and survive and thrive”. The debate raged on as both Dilwar and Qari Asim spoke passionately in support of the proposed female managed mosque.

“If u can be a doctor

& treat male patients, why not in religion? Be a female scholar & help men. We need to break taboo” Dilwar Hussain

“We forget that men

learnt from women historically - we need to nurture female Islamic scholarship” Qari Asim MBE

New Muslims who were present at the consultation welcomed the idea as did Bradford’s Council for Mosques who said they had no problems with the mosque being opened. So where do some of the other major religions stand on the issue? The Church of England appointed its first female bishop in December 2014 in the form of Reverend Libby Lane. This followed a decision by the synod to allow women to become bishops in July 2014 but the appointment took place after the measure became law in November that year. Others want to go a step further. Groups such as the Transformations Steering Group, a body which examines the impact of women in ministry on the Church of England, issued a public call to the bishops to encourage more “expansive language and imagery about God”. Support is growing within the Church of England to rewrite its official liturgy to refer to God as female

following the selection of the first women bishops and informal discussions are taking place at a senior level. Women are also playing a role within the Sikh faith. Gurbax Kaur Mann is the Education Secretary at Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara in Bradford. In Judaism, women don’t have role in United Synagogues but can do in Reform and Liberal synagogues. Two notable female roles include Rabbi Julia Neuberger who has been Senior Rabbi at West London Synagogue since 2011and Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, Senior Rabbi of Reform Judaism, the progressive arm of the Jewish community. Chanda Vyas is Britain’s first female Hindu priest and has been conducting ceremonies in Leicester since 2010. She has described her journey as a long, laborious one of breaking down traditional barriers and discrimination. Also in Leicester, the Sanatan Mandir has a female president who has executive decision making powers.

According to the Gujarat Hindu Society in Preston, no temple in the UK would have female priests as it is a requirement that the priest must be male. However, the wife or daughter of a priest may help to run religious activities. What are your thoughts on this issue? What do you think should be the role and influence of women in religious places of worship? Should they take a more or less active role in religious public life? POLITICS

Slow race for the Labour Leadership One thing is for sure. Under the reformed rules adopted from proposals made in the Collins Report. The election process to appoint the new leader of the Labour party will be shorter than it was when Old Ed was appointed. However, we would all be forgiven for thinking that it’s taking the party an awful long time in appointing one of its Fantastic Four to lead the party that will win the next general election.

There is a near enough feeling of déjà vu of 5 years ago when Labour had a fairly strong line up of Miliband, Miliband, Balls and Burnham, fighting it out for pole position. ‘Near enough’ has to be emphasised because the line-up needs to be strong enough to be a credible threat to the Tories at the next General Election. Otherwise we are likely to see David Cameron forget his pledge to quit as leader of the Tories and perhaps come back in an exhibition match to gain another 5 years as Prime Minister.

by Ali Arshad

Andy Burnham, the MP for Leigh and the Shadow Health Secretary has already taken a shot at the leadership post in the previous race. Seen by members with Labour as ‘Continuity Miliband’ Burnham is of the same cut of fabric as Ed. To give Burnham credit he does have a vast amount of experience under his belt. Since 2006 he has held positions in various shadow cabinets and he has performed well. Although Burnham is the bookies favourite to succeed Ed we have to remember he came fourth in a four horse back in the summer of 2010. This would inadvertently bring into question the overall calibre of the current crop of hopefuls. Dare I say…the worst of last time happens to be the best of this time, so God help Labour! There, I said it.

In order to understand the current crop of hopefuls it is only fair that I also give my belated yet brief pocket guide assessment of Ed’s successors;

Liz Kendall, the heavily fiscal focused and ambitious MP of Leicester West is seen as representative of the Blairite right of the party. Theoretically this is whom the Tories would LEAST likely to see as the next leader of the opposition. Kendall’s dreams on becoming the Prime Minister are largely made up reaching out to the middle class Tory voters. Some would say that she is almost replicating what the Conservative outlook is on running the country. One thing is for sure, the way team Kendall have conducted their affairs in a bullish manner has drawn in criticism from the old guard within Labour.

Jeremy Corbyn, the veteran MP for Islington North is the Labour stick of rock. Not only will he bleed red when you cut him, but Labour is written through him. Unfortunately you’ll find the font type may well be Lucida Calligraphy of old school Labour. Something that may not help win the next election. Corbyn is an amazing, pacifist individual who is so far left that that he travels on the hard shoulder of politics. Support for Corbyn is coming from an unlikely camp of Conservative members and even MP’s. As far as the Tories are concerned Labour will be repeating the same mistake from five years ago if Corbyn is to be elected. Making life a little easier for the Tories to repeat their successes of 2015.

Yvette Cooper, is the shadow home secretary and the MP for Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford. Cooper is tough, very intelligent with immense passion but she lacks self-belief. Cooper has all of the raw ingredients for a leader in the making and by all means should have been the favourite with the bookies, as it stands she is second favourite. However the likelihood of being overtaken by both Cobyn and Kendall is more of a threat than Cooper overtaking Burnham. A visit to a lifestyle coach for some self-empowering is in order as she is definitely underselling herself.

There you have my rough guide to the Labour leadership. If you feel a little underwhelmed then you are not alone. The vacant position of the leadership isn’t exactly brimming with top talent from within the party, however it can be said the party does consist of some great raw talent ready to be developed towards leadership as long as the training programme consists of modules covering assertiveness, charisma and setting direction. This briefly leads me onto the other race that’s currently being ran within Labour, the one for deputy leadership. The five candidates (Bradshaw, Creasy, Eagle, Flint & Watson) are another set of nice guys that will also make nice candidates for a future leader’s role. I can see how the Tories will once again smugly sit there awaiting for the next one to bite the dust. Please Labour, do yourself a favour…..and toughen up.

Suicide bombers Mohammad Sidique Khan, 30, Shehzad Tanweer, 22, and Germaine Lindsay, 19, left Leeds, West Yorkshire, around 04.00am in a rented car and drove to Luton where they met their fourth accomplice, 18-yearold Hasib Hussain. They then took a train together to King’s Cross in central London, before separating out onto the Underground system around

09.47am on board a number 30 bus at Tavistock Square, killing 13 people. To mark the passing of a decade since that fateful day, there will be memorial events not just in London, but across the country. Survivors of the 7/7 bombings and relatives of those who died will join the Prime Minister, David Cameron, London Mayor, Boris Johnson, the Duke of York and members of the emergency services at memorial events. A minute’s silence will take place across the country at 11:30am BST during a service at St Paul’s Cathedral and will be observed across the capital’s public transport

The devastating effects of the 7/7 bombings still remain in the memories of the families and relatives of the 52 victims and four bombers and the almost 800 people injured. Whilst some are still searching for answers, others are trying to spread peace and fight extremism. This weekend a group of young people from different faiths, along with Imam Qari Asim from Makkah Masjid in Leeds and others, plan to travel from Leeds to London retracing the steps of the bombers. The Leeds Peace Ambassadors “peace journey” will begin by laying flowers at Kings Cross and culminate in a visit to North Western Reform Synagogue

with each other. 10 years on, I am proud to say that we as a society reacted extremely solemnly and graciously. We did not fall apart or tear each other apart. Instead, the terrible attacks brought people together. This was an attack on Britain, and the victims were all of us – young and old, black and white, different faiths and none. People living in the neighbourhoods of Beeston or Hyde Park, who may not had spoken to each other before, came out of their homes in the aftermath of 7/7 to offer support and comfort to each other; no gesture of compassion or act of selflessness - from offering cups of tea to beds to each other - was too small.

It was a real demonstration of humanity at best. People of Leeds discovered a new resilient humanity. Those are some of the images that are engraved in my mind and strengthen my belief in humanity.” Whilst Muslim and nonMuslim communities remain

united and try to make sense of the tragedy, many Muslims feel there is also another key element to all this. A critical aspect of the days, weeks, months and years that have followed has been the intense political and media spotlight on Muslims and Islam. Muslim communities feel that the narrative of the War on Terror which began with 9/11 has been spreading its tentacles around the world ever since with Muslims everywhere feeling the reverberations of it. It has seen changes in policy and legislation which mean that monitoring for signs of “extremism” or “radicalisation” begins in

FEATURE life, places of employment, GPs surgeries and even into the private thought spaces and everyday activities of Muslims, such as which shops they choose to shop in or not. The narrative has now moved on from countering terrorism to “non-violent extremism” with Muslim communities feeling they are at the brunt end of it. When Muslims appear on news programmes to be interviewed about a topic, they say it is now par for the course to be asked to condemn something or someone; the default position being that unless they explicitly condemn, they must be condoning. And of course this, they say, is then viewed as the default position of the entire Muslim community. Whilst the perpetrators of

these attacks were Muslim, it is naive to think that Islam was the catalyst behind the attacks. Nowhere in the Quran does it condone the killing of innocent people. The sanctity of human life is held in such high regard that the Quran states “whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for

corruption [done] in the land it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely”. The very words of God command not to kill unjustly. Therefore, if the bombers had been acting in accordance with the Quran, they would not have taken 52

innocent lives, which included Muslims killed in the blasts. British Muslims will be observing the minute’s silence for the victims of the senseless and tragic London bombings and having their own reflections. However, they also feel it is important

that the world does not remain silent about the Muslim victims of terror acts around the world. Ultimately, it is our common humanity and shared values which must prevail in the battle to win hearts and minds on all sides.

What does a business plan mean to you?

1. Pessimistic assessment of the company and its potential 2. A realistic assessment of the company and its potential 3. A statement of revenue and expenses associated with the implementation of the basic tasks 4. A statement of expenditure and costs If you have chosen a different answer to No. 2 then this article is for you.

Does your business have a business plan?

Success in business can be planned. A Business plan is the most important document that a future entrepreneur needs to have . It’s a very common recurring question that our clients ask . But why do I need one? “I’m not going to apply for a loan to start my business. Writing a business plan is a waste of time”.

But this is not true!

The business plans are critical to the success of any new venture. Business plan consists of the following components: 1. summary 2. description of the company 3. description of what the company’s offering 4. analysis of the market 5. analysis of opportunities and threats 6. business strategy 7. financial analysis 8. the ratio analysis

Analysis of opportunities and threats

Entrepreneurs running a small business may find SWOT analysis an immensely helpful tool. SWOT analysis involves identifying your business’s strengths and weaknesses, and examining the opportunities and threats which may affect you. Carrying out a SWOT analysis can help you identify changes that can be made to improve your business.

Our predictions for the

Summer Budget 2015 Chancellor George Osborne is due reveal in his first full ‘Tory’ summer 2015 budget on 8 July. We look ahead and forecast our predictions ahead of Mr Osborne’s statement.

personal allowance, which meant no income tax is paid on the first £12,500 you earn. However, the party also pledged to increase the threshold at which you pay 40% higher rate tax to £50,000.

Landlords can currently use tax breaks to offset the cost of mortgage interest, a generous perk that amounted to £6.3billion in the financial year 2012-13, according to figures.

If you read the Conservative election manifesto you will most likely be able to anticipate what Osborne has planned for the next budget.

While this has been welcomed by many to help ‘squeeze the middle’ our experts predict that it is unlikely that an increase in the 40% income tax threshold would happen soon as Osborne would want to bring in a vote-winner just before the next election. Well the Tories have a good five year run to build on that.

Axing breaks for landlord would also make the housing market fairer for ordinary home buyers, who have struggled to raise the cash needed for deposits amid rising property prices.

This will be the first fully controlled budget by the Tory government in 18 years. While the party has already make some radical changes, particularly around pensions and ISAs, that doesn’t mean there isn’t scope for more. The bulk of the Budget is expected to focus on welfare cuts as chancellor George Osborne tries to find an extra £12 billion, but here’s what else you should look out for. Pensions If you thought the changes to pensions in the 2014 Budget were significant, well don’t be surprised when more changes become apparent in the coming budget. In their pre-election manifesto the Tories said those earning more than £150,000 would see the amount of relief on pension contributions reduced. So we can be sure that pension tax relief for the UK’s highest earners is ready for the chop The government plans a complex system of reducing the annual allowance for pension contributions. For every £2 earned over the £150,000 threshold, the annual allowance will be reduced by £1 meaning those earning £210,000 will have an annual allowance of just £10,000. There are also concerns that the annual allowance, which has already been reduced dramatically and now sits at £40,000, will be reduced again. Income tax The Tories, with their coalition partner, the Liberal Democrats adopted the policy of increasing the

On the other hand the reduction in the 45% tax band for the country’s highest earners to 40% would most likely happen immediately so a tax break for the richest is forgotten come election time. Salary sacrifice Salary sacrifice has been a highly debated issue in the Budget predictions. It is the practice of diverting a proportion of salary into pension contributions to lower the income tax rate paid; particularly useful for those who are earning more than £150,000 a year. Banning salary sacrifice has been talked about as it would net the government millions more in income tax and national insurance but practically it would be very difficult to do as there is no rule on the amount of pension contributions that someone is entitled to receive from their employer in relation to their salary. Property As more people have invested in the buy-to-let market since the economic crisis of 2008, the cost of tax perks offered to investors have soared. The most recent HMRC figures revealed that landlords benefited from £14billion tax-breaks in 2013. And as George Osborne looks to make savings for the Treasury, it’s thought that the market could be targeted.

He predicted that ‘at some point we will get an increase in council tax in the top bands’ and said the government could remove the council tax reliefs for empty property to penalise absentee owners, of which there are an increasing number in the capital as foreign buyers snap up London real estate. Despite calls from housing charities to tax buy-to-let landlords more harshly to discourage them buying up homes and pricing young first-time buyers out of the market, Much of the criticism of buy-tolet is due to the ability to offset mortgage interest against the tax paid. Inheritance tax The Conservatives have said they will reform inheritance tax (IHT) so a couple can pass on a family home worth up to £1 million free of the death tax. This will be possible by adding a £175,000 per person residential property threshold to the current nil rate band of £325,000, providing an IHT allowance of £500,000 per person or £1 million per couple. The £175,000 will only apply to the person’s main property. This looks to be good news, for many families.

GHAP SHAP

with award-winning filmmaker Deeyah Khan News headlines are currently crowded with stories around, Jihad, extremism and radicalisation and more so because it is claimed that more and more Britons are flying over to Iraq and Syria to partake in a so called holy war – Jihad. This edition we caught up with award winning filmmaker Deeyah Khan who spent almost two years interviewing British Muslims who had signed up to a violent Jihad, which was the made into a film and was aired by ITV as part of their Exposure series – Jihad: A British Story. The film explored and showcased extraordinary interviews with a number of British Muslims who were at the forefront of the movement to recruit, raise funds for and fight in wars ranging from Afghanistan in the 1980s through to Kashmir, Burma, Bosnia and Chechnya. This is not the first time the 37 year old filmmaker has tackled difficult subjects. Her debut film as director and producer, Banaz A Love Story, won her several awards and accolades including the prestigious Emmy Award for Best International Documentary Film We caught up with the talented

activist on her latest film, what she thinks of David Cameron and how she deals with death threats. What has the reaction been towards you and the film Jihad: A British Story aired as part of ITV’s Exposure series last month? So far it has been overwhelmingly positive, there has obviously been some negative responses as well, but that is to be expected. Everything from a terrorist advisor, an apologist for extremism, a ‘paki’ and I need to go back home it’s all that kind of stuff. You know the usual (she laughs). Then there will be those who say it should have been made this way or that way. It should have highlighted this or that. You can’t make everyone happy, but I made the film my way and I am happy with the end product and am generally pleased with the response. Your documentary takes about Jihad

in a violent context relating it to extremism and holy war, whereas in the Muslim faith many also interpret Jihad as an intellectual Jihad. The Jihad through science and of knowledge and a willingness to struggle in every aspect of one’s life. Why the imbalance? Why only the violent side of Jihad? You called your documentary Exposure – Jihad: A British Story, which gives the impression that Jihad is for those with extremist views and want to fight a holy war, portraying Muslims as only being concerned with violent ‘jihad’. Many Muslims would disagree with this and feel the title fuels the stereotyped view the mainstream have of Jihad, when ‘jihad can also mean a day to day struggle in life. So why the imbalance, why just show Jihad as violent in your film? Well one of the men in the film does

refer to the Jihad you say. He talks about his daily struggles and that he is on Jihad. So that’s one aspect. The reason for titling the film with the word Jihad, is exactly what most of the west associate the word as - violence and holy war. So to try to look at that word, but looking underneath at the humanity and the people underneath it was my purpose. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t need for discussion around a broader understanding and broader education around the word Jihad, but that wasn’t what was discussed or part of the documentary. That would have to be another documentary. So my reason for using the word Jihad, is to try to take something that everyone today knows and to look underneath it. To look into the softer human and the more vulnerable aspect of human nature. Showing people that this is a word associated with violence. Yes? Correctly or incorrectly. But

I think they are letting us down and doing a dis-service At a time when we need more compassion, more love, more diversity, what they are doing is they are actually dividing us. They are use the wrong language, this whole thing about British values, it isn’t British values, but human values. You’re not alien to being threatened. You were in the music industry when you were younger, and went through an ordeal as people went against you because the industry wasn’t an ‘Islamically’ acceptable career for a Muslim girl. How do you cope with this and get through it? Without sounding corny, it’s a lot of love. I come from a very very loving family

underneath that word there are human beings and there is humanity underneath there. There are human beings who are wonderful, who are beautiful, courageous and heroic and also flawed and who made mistakes who do silly things and bad things, just like any other human beings. My intent wasn’t to create an educational piece of what that word itself means. My intention was to create a piece that helps people look at humanity behind that word. Your film explores why people go on a violent ‘Jihad’ and has been researched by you in detail. So in the case of Bradford family, the Dawoud sisters and their children who are believed to have left their families and homes to go to Syria, what are your thoughts? What are your views? What do you think will have made those women want to risk not only theirs but their own children’s lives into a war torn country like Syria? I think it’s very disturbing and to take children into a war zone is beyond belief.

What I believe is that there is always something else going on. Whether it’s something at home, at work, there is something going on and it’s kind of a transition of leaving the west. It’s my gut and my heart that says there is always something else going on. People won’t just go online and decide right I am going to pack my bags and go to Syria. There is always something going on. It’s not as clear cut or black and white. I couldn’t tell you what it is. I don’t know what backgrounds they come from, what their husbands are like, what their families are like, and I suspect we’re not going to get to know. It’s very hard in some aspects for people to come out and speak out because they are afraid to say due to honour and not wanting to look bad, there will be so much going on. There could be a thousand things and we could make guesses all day long, but there is more to the picture, it could be emotional and could include psychological problems which can include mental illness.

I don’t understand it, but it does lead to ask one question; why does that look like a good option to them? If Syria is a good option for them and their children, then I can’t help to ask in my heart why that is.

However there is a reason why you and I haven’t gone. Correct? It doesn’t mean you and I don’t feel passionate about foreign policy? You and I don’t get angry at certain things. So to find the reason to find out why they have gone and not us is one to think about.

I don’t believe that they are crazy. Do you? But during the process of making this film, what I have learnt time and time again is that there are a lot of people going through issues.

The ‘Daily Mail’ ran a headline quoting one of the men, Alyas Karmani who featured in your film saying: Huge numbers of Muslims are turning to ISIS because they want

SEX! Alyas says he was misquoted. What is your comment on this? (Laughs) Seriously if any still one takes that ‘thing’ seriously you’re just giving them more power, by taking their words as kind of reality. They have a very clear agenda, not just when it comes to Muslims but when it comes to human beings, they show the worst of human kind and worst of humanity. Personally I wouldn’t give that any attention because by reacting to them we are handing them over even more powers. We cannot give that much power to the Mail. They are just here to create shock and destroy someone else. Aren’t they rubbish? Prime Minister David Cameron has warned of the dangers posed by those who “quietly condone” Islamic State militants’ extremist ideology.

My mother is a great support and I get lots of love from her. The love I get from my parents the emotional support. I think it’s about working with the resources you have been given, using those tools. The music industry was very very difficult and really really devastating. I didn’t used to talk about it then and I had sacrificed a lot for it. It was tough going into the industry at the age of seven and the fact that I was given a lot of flak for it, given that it wasn’t my career choice, it did bother me a lot. Whereas today, if I get flak I don’t really care and I think the reason why I don’t care anymore is because everything that I am doing I am doing from my own heart. So I am willing to take anything that comes my way, because it’s mine. It’s my heart and it’s true for me. So then you’re willing. So then maybe I am an extremist I am willing to die for it.

Many Muslims are outraged with his comments. How do you feel about what he said? Well my view is that politicians are failing when it comes to leadership. The way that they have chosen to deal with this is that it is a security driven and surveillance driven model. Their rhetoric ‘us’ and ‘them’ is so devastating, so awful and irresponsible. The leaders of the country should be representing the people of that country, not just people of interest. Our leaders have failed. They need to create an environment now where building bridges becomes a priority, a more inclusive, more vibrant society can actually flourish.

Summer Time

Skin Care Tips

by RUPA GILL The heat, chlorine, salt water and humidity all take their toll on your skin in the summer months, but the number one cause of wrinkles is sun exposure. These helpful summer skin care tips will keep your skin protected and beautiful all summer long.

Wear a sunscreen Even if you don’t expose your skin to the sun, up to 80% of all sun damage is from incidental exposure like walking and driving. There are two types of uv light that can harm your skin - UVA and UVB. A broad spectrum or full spectrum

ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINE Issue 1

sunscreen is designed to protect you from both. UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles and age spots. UVB rays can burn your skin. A daily sunscreen is recommended. Switch up your moisturiser As the weather starts to get warmer, your skin’s needs will change. Thicker creams which have seen you through the winter months become harder for skin to absorb. Make the switch and change these up for a lighter formula or emulsion which will give skin the hydration and moisturisation it needs, without over-saturation or overloading. Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse To avoid blocked pores and breakouts, a good cleansing regime is vital to keep skin balanced and purified. Make sure to remove all makeup and perspiration built up during the day by giving skin a thorough cleanse at night and add a gentle exfoliator (1-2 times a week) to remove dead surface skin cells. Add a toner to remove any residue left and to rebalance skin. Repeat cleansing in the morning before applying any make-up. Wash your make up brushes every week Your skin is oilier during the summer and that oil and bacteria gets caught up in the bristles of your makeup brushes which results in clogged pores. Fill a glass with warm water and add 1 TBSP of gentle shampoo, swish your brushes and create lather then rinse well and use a comb to detangle and reshape. Dry upright in a glass in the sun. (The sun kills bacteria).

Have your cake and it eat….. Nom Nom!

Issue 1

Eid and Birthday celebrations are often renowned for a huge party and gathering of friends and family but one significant item that is always at these parties is a CAKE. Fresh cream cake, chocolate cake, pumpkin cake, red velvet cake, the list is endless. No matter what your preferences are there is always a cake for your needs, requirements and taste. In actual fact the cake tradition started with the ancient Romans, their idea of a cake didn’t resemble the cake we know and love today because they were simple flat round pieces of dough made from flour and contained nuts, yeast and honey as a sweetener. The History of cake can also be traced back to the ancient Greek’s who make round or moon shaped honey cakes similar to the Romans but they would offer these cakes to the Goddess of The Moon – Artemis and they would place candles on the cake to make the cake glow like the moon. Over time the confectionery developed and by the 15th century cakes were decorated with sugar and icing. The people at this time realised that the appearance of the cake was just as important as its taste hence the colouring and decorations. Cake was in fact a wealthy man’s treat and it was only after the industrial revolution that cake was accessible for everyone to buy. This was what motivated people to

9

then celebrate the receiving of a cake as materials and tools became accessible and more advanced cake became more popular. Nowadays, especially on Birthday cakes, we place candles on top of the cake to symbolise the age of the recipient putting candles on a cake can be traced back to 18th century Germany. Candles were placed on the cake as part of a symbolic passage of time and when Germans emigrated they took this tradition with them and this is why we still have candles on a birthday cake now and as mentioned the Greek’s used to do it too. Whilst candles are burning on the cake protocol suggests the song ‘Happy Birthday’ is sang. The phrase Happy Birthday didn’t appear on any sort of cake until the song ‘Happy Birthday To You’ was popular in the 1900’s so before then there was no such thing as a ‘Happy’ Birthday or possibly a ‘Happy’ Eid or a ‘Happy’ anything. The cake we love and enjoy eating on Eid and on Birthdays only ever contained honey and nuts, it was only available for the wealthy and the excitement for a cake wasn’t around. Now we adore a cake and there must be a cake at an occasion. If there isn’t then why not, the importance of cake is clearly significant but whatever you’re preferences remember eat moderately and enjoy after all we don’t want to put on all the pounds!

“I feel I am a very small part of Punjabi cinema - my contribution is minimal.” Exclusive with Diljit Dosanjh by Ninder Kaur

Tell us a bit about the filmSardaar Ji?

produced by Gunbir Singh Sidhu and Manmord Sidhu and they are great at what they do. The storyline is captivating, the music is great and the film has some spectacular special effects.

After the success of comedy films like Jatt and Juliet and Disco Singh, the biggest name in Punjabi cinema is back again! Diljit Dosanjh , the all-singing, the all-acting performer has teamed up with director Rohit Chauhan for the newly released fantasy film- ‘Sardaar Ji’

It is a fantasy film and its the first of its kind in Punjab cinema. It is a family film that will make audiences from all age groups laugh. It has been filmed in India, Canada and England, so there are some great locations in the film. Why should people go watch it?

You usually play comedic roles in your films with the exception of a few films. Do you prefer roles like this or more serious ones?

Speaking to Asian Style Magazine, Diljit talked about his new movie and puts those Bollywood movie debut rumours to rest.

Everyone should go and watch the film because there is no reason for them not to. The film has been directed by Rohit Jugraj and

The majority of films I have previously done are RomComs with the exception of Punjab 1984, which was a period drama.

I have no preference over which types of character I play. I feel as though I can relate to most personality types, it is more so the team I work alongside and the storyline of a movie which attracts me to a role. The music promos look amazing. What is your favourite track and why? Veer Vaar is my favourite song from the film. I was saving it for my own personal album but I felt as though it went well in the film so we added it in last minute.

You and Neeru Bajwa seem to have great chemistry off screen and on screen. What was it like working with her again? She is a brilliant actress. I see Neeru Bajwa as being my senior. She has a lot of experience within the industry and I feel she has taught me a lot. I feel as though I still have much more left to learn from her. You always seem to play a character in love, but is there a special lady in your life?

It’s everything. First of all it’s got to have a good story. Then everything after that, I have to take into consideration- who is the director, the production team, the promoters, if I can relate to the character and do the director’s vision justice.

13

and I believe in making songs. I am lucky that I have had opportunities in acting as well. What’s next from you?

You have had a lot of success in the music and film industry, but which do you prefer?

I am working on a number of films at the moment. In terms of music, I will be releasing some singles soon and hopefully next year in May I will be returning to the UK for a tour.

I enjoy both but singing will always be my first love. It’s who I am. I enjoy singing the most

Sardaar Ji is showing in UK cinemas nationwide.

Not right now. I am just concentrating on work right now. I am too busy touring at the moment so I don’t have time to think about it. When it happens it will happen. You have won seven awards for Best Actor. Do you feel proud contributing to the Punjabi film industry? I feel I am a very small part of Punjabi cinema - my contribution is minimal. I am just really happy that the movies I have been a part of, have received such a great response. In the future, I can only hope that the Punjabi film industry will get bigger and better. The budget for the films are increasing and there is a lot more support out there. I will continue to keep doing what I am doing and make the fans proud. Punjabi films have both international and national success but do you feel that people usually play it safe by doing Punjabi comedy films? Would you consider doing more serious films? Not necessarily. I was involved with Punjab 84 and that was a period film that won a national award. It all depends on the subject. When I decide on choosing a film, it doesn’t matter about how serious it is, it is all about the subject, whether it is a rom com, thriller or any other genre. Doing a comedy movie isn’t an easy job. It’s actually really hard. Is it true that you are going to be doing a Bollywood film with Kareena Kapoor? Yes , that is true. I will be playing a lead role in Abhishek’s Chaubey’s ‘Udta Punjab’ which will also be starring Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor. The film deals with drug issues faced among youngsters in Punjab,so it has a very serious storyline. It will be my first Bollywood movie, so I am excited to see what the fans will think. The film will be out early next year. What has been your favourite acting role to date? I don’t really have a favourite. As long as I have a new and different role to my previous work that’s what I like. I like to play new roles to switch it up. What factors make your decision when accepting a film? Is it the team you are working with, the script, the director…..?

ABOUT THE FILM The romantic comedy tells the story about an orphaned boy Jaggi (Diljit Dosanjh) and his ability to communicate with the spirit world.

He is called to England from India to catch a mesmerising lady ghost, Neeru Bajwa (his Jatt and Juliet co-star) who he ends up falling in love with. The film also stars Mandy Takhar and Jaswinder Bhalla in pivotal roles.

Bond Is Back But This Time On Broadway

Wedding season has begun which only means one thing- new music and who better than DJ Nav to get everyone hyped and ready for a summer banger.

It seems like an unlike ly thing to do but Merry Saltzman, the daughter of Bond film producer Harry Sa ltzman, is bringing Bond to Broad way.

The show will be called James Bond: The Music al and will feature music and lyrics from Jay Henry We isz and a book by Dave Clarke.

Dubbed as the wedding song ‘Teri Rab Ne’ by DJ Nav, which features international artists and music couple Manj Musik and Nindy Kaur, is out now and the song is already a hit amongst music lovers. The newly anticipated release has been tailor-made for wedding functions taking on an old classic and giving it a modern day spin for today’s couples. The original was a hit but with DJ Nav’s upbeat rhythm and fresh take, the song has touched an all new high which makes for a current love story.

The video for the song was shot live at a real wedding in one single take, which also makes it the first-of-its-kind.

The track features raw dhol and melodious voices which will get listeners off their feet and heading straight to the dance floor.

‘Teri Rab Ne’ has released on SoundCloud and available for FREE download now.

The song is expected to be a huge hit at weddings this summer in India and throughout the UK.

@DjNavKUDOS

James Bond: The Music al will have an original storyline, according to producers, featuring “several Bond villains, plus some new ones.” Merry also told Playbill: “Production schedules and trial runs are still being wo rked out in anticipatio n of a late 2017-early 2018 opening ,” revealing that the mu sical will either premiere on Bro adway or in Las Vegas. Casting has yet to be announced. Meanwhile, Daniel Craig will return as 007 in the 24th Bond film, Spectre , which is set for release on November 6 this year. That’s Bond-tastic!

Overflowing ideas made me scrap direction plans: Arjun Kapoor Actor Arjun Kapoor says he wanted to become a director, but ideas continuously flowing from his mind prompted him to put his plans on hold. “I tried writing because I wanted to be a director. But I wasn’t good at writing as my mind would run much faster than my hand could. And I thought of too many things which eventually didn’t make sense in terms of a character. I just wanted to encompass everything into that script,” Arjun said during the launch of writer Debashish Irengbam’s book “Me, Mia, Multiple” along with lyricist-poet Javed Akhtar. “I was very that’s

naive and gullible at that time and thought that I could achieve it. But when I realised that I’m not yet ready for direction. Since then, I haven’t dwelt on it. You evolve over a course of time and something you desire now might not be something you desire five years later,” Arjun said. The actor also said he was “not a voracious reader” and that he did not have an appetite for reading. He said he always prefers watching films over reading books, and that he also did not read “2 States”, the book on which his Rs.100-crore blockbuster of the same name was based on. Arjun is preparing himself for his upcoming romantic film with Kareena Kapoor Khan, directed by R. Balki which goes on floors by the end of July.

Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions will be bringing Bollywood stars to the UK this year. Bollywood’s premier production house, Dharma Productions will be filming three movies in various British cities starting this summer. Director-Producer Karan Johar, who made his directorial debut with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which was filmed in Scotland, will be using British locations for his next directorial, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. Principal shooting for the romantic drama will commence in London in September 2015. Speaking to Asian Sunday earlier this year, Anushka Sharma said, “I am very excited as I love the energy of the UK. I feel like I am at home when I am in the UK for some reason. I can’t wait to get back to my real job and that is acting.” Commenting on the film Ranbir Kapoor told us, “I really want to do a light, urban love story and there is nobody better for that genre than Karan. To work with Aishwarya Rai and Anushka in the film is really thrilling and another exciting chapter for me. I just hope that I can match the expectations of a Karan Johar hero. He has worked with the best of the Indian film industry and it’s really heart-warming that he has chosen me as his next leading actor.” Hit-maker Mohit Suri will also be filming the Hindi remake of French blockbuster The Intouchables in London this summer. The Ek Villain director will reportedly reunite with his Aashiqui 2 actor Aditya Roy Kapur, although this hasn’t been confirmed yet. “I am making the official remake of the French classic film The Intouchables. That will probably be my next project. I am making the film with Karan Johar and Dharma Productions and will be extensively shooting it in the UK. Nothing is completely confirmed until we start rolling though,” said Suri. Nitya Mehra’s much-awaited Sidharth Malhotra-Katrina Kaif will also be filmed in a yet-undisclosed UK location. The film will be produced by Dharma Productions and Excel Entertainment and is a fresh love story. We certainly can’t wait to know more about these movies and will bring you exclusive news and gossip right from the set.

Actress-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt says she wants to get in front of the camera again. “I stopped acting as I was not curious about it anymore. I was not passionate about acting. I became passionate about filmmaking. The thrill to make something out of nothing and to go out there to see whether it will work or not attracted me. But today, I feel the need to act again,” Pooja said at an event in India recently “I feel the need to go out there in front of the camera and let go as acting is all about letting go. Women are being hunted, says Sandra Actress Sandra Bullock believes women are being “hunted” by the media, something which she says “scares (and) embarrasses” her. “I feel like it’s become open hunting season in how women are attacked and it’s not because of who we are as people, it’s because of how we look or our age. I’m shocked, and maybe I was just naive, but I’m embarrassed by it. “My son (Louis) is getting ready to grow up in this world and I’m trying to raise a good man who values and appreciates women, and here we have this attack on women in the media that I don’t see a stop happening,” Bullock told eonline.com. The 50-year-old actress has praised the “tribe” of women in Hollywood who have formed a firm unit against their critics. She added: “You’d be surprised at the love that you have in our crazy industry. The women have bonded together and have sort of become this tribe of trying to take care of each other and be there for each other in a way, because the minute you step out it’s an onslaught. “We need to stop. We are harming girls and women in a way, at a speed that it’s scaring me. It’s really scaring me, so I would love for someone to help put a stop to this.”

Katy Perry wants to buy Los Feliz convent, two nuns say no Katy Perry is planning to buy an eightacre estate in Los Feliz, but there are two nuns who are opposed to the idea of their former convent falling into the hands of the singer. Sister Rita Callanan and Sister Catherine Rose Holzman (of the Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary) have opposed the idea of Perry taking ownership of the property where their motherhouse had been based since 1970. However, they have favoured the idea of selling it to restaurateur Dana Hollister, who too is vying to purchase the property, reports nytimes.com. In the midst of the property dispute is the question whether the Roman Catholic Archdiocese or the pair of nuns own and have the right to sell the property. While the nuns, who believe they are the rightful owners, currently are pushing to seal the deal with Hollister, local Archbishop Jose Gomez is fighting to sell the convent to Perry.

Hollister had promised roughly USD 15.5 million for the estate (she has paid USD 100,000 in cash to date). Perry, on the other hand, has offered a smaller sum of USD 14.5 million in cash. The archdiocese has sued Hollister, and Judge Robert O’Brien has been asked to issue an injunction to stop Sister Rita and Sister Catherine Rose from selling the property to the restaurateur, who reportedly already has moved into the estate. Court filings show that the archdiocese believes Hollister’s interest in the purchase is contingent on her being granted the power to develop a restaurant and hotel on the property and is strongly against the idea. “There’s no reason for them to allege that. It’s part of the ridiculousness that propels this whole story forward,” Hollister has said of the claim. A hearing will take place on July 30 in the Los Angeles county superior court.

phenomenal. For me, this isn’t a regular song. I was suddenly going into a genre that I hadn’t tackled before as a singer. It’s the first time I have sung a Qawalli even though I have studied them and even composed one.” The singer has appeared in his own music videos with Bollywood

My friendship and love with him and his family goes back so many years that it was different from my other songs,” said the singer. Adnan also believes that it wasn’t his weight that he remarkably lost in 2006 that changed his mind. “I was extremely unapologetic about the way I looked. I just used to enjoy life. I had no intentions of losing my weight until my Doctor told me that I had to as it was tremendously critical. I was never conscious of it. The reasoning behind this decision was purely emotional and just for Salman.” Bajrangi Bhaijaan also features a song,Tu Chahiye, by Pakistani singer Atif Aslam and both songs are already creating a rage worldwide. “It will take forever to change the mindset about women in India”

– Vidya Balan by sunny malik Bollywood actress reveals that she blamed her marriage for her flops at the box office. Award-winning Indian actress Vidya Balan was last in cinemas essaying the role of a wife in an abusive marriage, who also has an extra-marital affair, in Mohit Suri’s ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahaani’ (Our Incomplete Love Story).

career with ‘Parineeta’ (2005), for which she won the Filmfare Best Female Debut award, and went on to star in super-hits such as ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ (2006), Paa (2009) and Kahaani (2012) among many others. She has also been on the jury panel of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and is known for her portal of strong female protagonists.

‘Hamari Adhuri Kahaani’ is an adaptation of director-producer Mahesh Bhatt’s book by the same name. The movie also starred Emraan Hashmi and Nationalaward winning actor Rajkummar Rao.

Everything changed in the last two years for the actress after getting married to the managing director of The Walt Disney Company India (formerly UTV Motion Pictures), Sidharth Roy Kapur, in 2012. Since then, her films ‘Ghanchakkar’ (2013), ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ (2014) and ‘Bobby Jasoos’ (2014) failed at the box office.

The 37-year-old performer has continuously impressed critics with her on-screen work and her films also have been mostly successful at the box office. She started her

The general perception in India is that a married actress can’t have a successful career in Bollywood. Kareena Kapoor Khan, who married actor Saif Ali Khan in 2012, was

often asked by the media whether the union will affect her career. Kareena is still working with the biggest names in the industry and marriage clearly hasn’t changed anything for her as she will be seen in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ next month with superstar Salman Khan. Vidya never thought about this prior to getting married. However, the three consecutive unsuccessful films made Vidya think whether it had to do something with her being married now. Even in her new film ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahaani’, the character she plays is of a wife who faces abuse and is made to conform to the “typical Indian housewife”. “The thinking is very deep seeded and it will take forever to change the mind-set about women in India. Women in India are living life on their own terms now. We are doing things that women weren’t doing in the past. We are

educated, working and doing well for ourselves. We make our own choices and stand by them,” says Vidya. “There is a perception that films with married actresses don’t work. I will not deny that

ASIAN STYLE MAGAZINE Issue 1

fleetingly, the thought did cross my mind. I thought that maybe that is a possibility why my films didn’t work,” revealed the actress. “I have had some time since my last release, ‘Bobby Jasoos’, and the time has given me a larger perspective. I don’t think that it has anything to do with marriage. It is more about the film connecting with the audiences or not. I was perhaps personalising the failure of my movies. This happened to me after seven or eight consecutive hits. It was difficult for me to come to terms with it when my films then faced rejection. I thought that maybe I did something wrong. I think there is no satisfactory explanation as to why the movies didn’t work. This phase taught me not to personalise failure and that success and failure can’t be pinned down to one person.” Speaking about the book the film has been adapted from, Vidya said that many incidents in the semibiography and in the film are based on what occurred between Mahesh Bhatt’s parents. “It is mostly based on events that took place in Mahesh Bhatt’s parents’ life and also on people he was close to. In that sense, the film is derived from real life experiences and real stories. When you personalise stories, they become more powerful. That is what attracted me to the film. The characters and film feels very real. The film doesn’t shy away from complexities in human relationships, feelings of insecurity and inequality.” Vidya hoped that her latest release was a success at the box office but despite the outcome she is optimistic about her future. “I know how to deal with failure better now. I’m an eternal optimist and always very positive.” The outcome of ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahaani’ hasn’t deterred the Tamilian beauty as she will soon be taking part in the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne

once again. For the fourth year in a row Vidya Balan will be seen as the face of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne that commenced in the year 2012. The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne that celebrates Indian cinema internationally will kick start from 14 to 27 August 2015 in Melbourne. The Parineeta actress will continue to engage herself in encouraging Indian cinema on a global platform. This year, the festival theme is around equality and Vidya herself has suggested this theme. The festival will provide an opportunity to aspiring filmmakers on the global stage to showcase their craft. Speaking on this, Vidya Balan said, “’Equality is something that I feel very passionately about... and in today’s times nothing seems more imperative than a free and equal world. I believe that Art and Films can help condition and change mindsets and attitudes and I am over joyed to see such wonderful films and events in our program that will celebrate and embrace the diversity that defines us all.” Well with 2015 being a significant year for Vidya as she completes a decade in the industry we certainly hope the coming year’s bring back memorable performances from her like we saw in Kahaani and the desperate hunger for success Silk Smitha in The Dirty Picture.

LOST TRADITIONS EXPERIENCE INDIA’S FORGOTTEN COURTESAN CULTURE WITH A STUNNING STAGE ADAPTATION OF UMRAO JAAN

A vast, open hall – the meeting place for wealthy Nawabs – decorated in gilded carvings and seeped in the opulence of the Mughal period. Taking centre stage, the courtesan, or the Tawa’if, a figure who embodies a world of refinement through her poetry, music and dance, prepares to entertain an eager crowd…

While India’s courtesan culture has long died out, it has not been forgotten. Stories from the period have worked their way into literature, stage performances and most notably, Bollywood. Indian cinema often gives birth to the tragic tales of India’s most prominent courtesans, who have inspired blockbuster hits. In particular, the story of Umrao Jaan, the most sought after courtesan of the midnineteenth century, has travelled across generations through books, theatre and cinema.

As the first recording artists of the British Typewriter and Gramophone Company (which later became known as HMV), the life and culture of courtesan tradition is long, complex and transformative. But who exactly were the Tawa’if? Ubiquitous in India during the Mughal period, the Tawa’if began their careers as educated, cultured entertainers, who taught the children of the elite, however, as the influence of the British reigned down heavily, perceptions changed and the profession slowly dwindled into an underworld of prostitution.

Now, a stage adaptation of the hauntingly beautiful legend is being brought to you by The Asian Music Circuit (AMC) as part of a dedicated season about 19th Century India. Originally an Urdu novel by Mohammed Mirza Hadi Ruswa published in 1899, the story of Umrao Jaan is being brought to life once again in London’s Cockpit Theatre, and George Square Studio One Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The intimate space will allow audiences to experience the cast’s breath taking performances, and immerse themselves into the glorious culture

Viram Jasani, from the AMC, the producer of the Lost Traditions season, comments: “Mughal India is one of the most interesting periods in history because it is immersed in so much culture and opulence. It’s fascinating to think about how the courtesans slowly became outcasts in society as a result of the impact of the English presence in India and Indian conservative society. Not many people are aware of their noble beginnings. Of course, a lot of people in India are familiar with the story of Umrao Jaan – one of the most iconic stories in courtesan history. I felt it was time to bring it to the UK in a very different way. I feel honoured to be working with Simon Mundy and Vasilios Arabos. They are both esteemed contributors to their respective industries and have really helped me bring this project to life. I can’t wait to share it with audiences in London and Edinburgh.”

of the 19th Century courtesan period. Commissioned by the AMC, the play has been re-written in English by renowned author and poet Simon Mundy for a new generation of audiences. Directed by Vasilios Arabos, the play is interspersed with beautiful music composed and directed by Viram Jasani in the traditional style of thumri and ghazal. Using contemporary theatre techniques, light, sound and live music, Umrao Jaan will be given the makeover of modernity, yet will still retain its traditional Lucknowi culture with its beautiful poetry, stunning music and captivating Kathak dance sequences. This theatre adaption is part of The AMC’s Lost Traditions season of events based around 19th Century courtesans in India. Through a series of spectacular experiences, including an exhibition and concerts of Thumri, Ghazal and Qawali concert, The AMC aims to answer who the Tawa’if were, how their role in society was defined and even looks at their journey from “salons to the concert stage.”

Umrao – The Noble Courtesan will open on Wednesday 22nd July through to Friday 24th July 2015 at The Cockpit, Gateforth Street, Marlylebone, London,NW8 8EH

Edinburgh Fringe Festival 6th August till 31st August 2015 at George Square Studio One, George Square and Windmill Lane, Edinburgh EH8 9JS.

Riding the Samoosa Express The much anticipated collection of personal narratives of Muslim women has been brought to us in one very moving novel. Riding the Samoosa Express showcases, South African Muslim Women, in their trials, tribulations and triumphs. The novel is a collection of deep and light-hearted life stories exploring issues of marriage, love, loss, family life, culture, religious beliefs and suburban life. Local and international politics, freedom and education are among other important issues faced by professional and well-educated Muslim women who have not been held back by global stereotypes. This book is an anthology of honest reflections, pieces of advice and anecdotes compiled for Muslim women reflecting on marriage, and for all others interested in hearing Muslim women’s voices. ‘When an Indian, Muslim woman reaches marriageable age, it is not uncommon for her to be approached by elderly family members with the

following question, “When are you getting married?” Often, the young woman is encouraged to “view” or “meet” suitable men in the presence of her family … The question of whether or not this young lady will be happily matched to this suitor is often left unanswered … Riding the Samoosa Express is an anthology that aims to showcase the lives of South African Muslim Women before and beyond marriage.’ Sumaya Seedat, Irtiqa website, Muslim Women With A Voice

This book demonstrates that Muslim women do in fact have a voice, and this book not only allows the readers into personal stories but displays the sense of humour, the questioning minds and the difficulties of growing up in South Africa as a Muslim woman. The proceeds from sales of the book are being donated to the Nisaa Institute for Women’s Development which renders services to abused women and their children in South Africa.

“ People don’t like me because I say things as they are.” Duchess of York visits Huddersfiled University by Ninder Kaur I met the Duchess of York last week-Sarah Ferguson known to many people as Fergie. She arrived at Huddersfield University to team up with Fashion and Textile students on a special project. Upon her arrival, I was a little susceptible to how she would be as a person, considering she has been deemed as a scandalous figure in the media.

Whilst addressing her attendees she opened with: “People don’t like me because I say things as they are.” and from there I saw a strong, empowering, woman in front of me, a woman that doesn’t let anything bring her down. Despite what others think, Sarah is an amazing role model having mentioned a few of the empowering philanthropic projects she has been involved in over the past 22 years. The Duchess of York was at

the University of Huddersfield to give ten students, who had been specially selected and randomly paired up, a lifechanging opportunity.

weeks to decide which ones would go in to production in India and be sold at Topshop.

The students were asked by Sarah to design a range of bathroom accessories in a bid for the winning designs to be sold through the Duchess’s charity initiative, Key to Freedom. The initiative, which started in 2012, supports vulnerable and abused women and men in the West Bengal region of India forge a career in the textile industry.

With the tough decision of choosing a winner and after much deliberation among university staff members, The Duchess awarded Chantelle Mallin, 23, and Emily Cliffe, 22 for their bohemianstyle male clothing and accessories designs which will be sold in Topman.

The students had all been handpicked by Dr Kevin Almond, Head of Department for Fashion and Textiles and Senior Textiles Lecturer Nicola Redmore as suitable people to become involved with the project, which is run by the Duke of York’s office and Indian-based Women’s Interlink Foundation (WIF). The Foundation provides women and men with accommodation in safe houses, where they are taught skills such as sewing and textile printing. This enables them to produce garments through an initiative named Key to Freedom, where the finish products are sold at UK high street chain Topshop. With HRH The Duke of York being the patron of the University of Huddersfield, The Duchess was invited to choose the winning designs that students had been working on for the past 3

The Duchess said: “It was a really hard decision but I liked the concept of the girl’s design and the contemporary colours they had used. They reached out to menswear and I liked that because men in India are also victims of abuse. “ After they had been told that they had won, Emily said: “I am absolutely delighted. I can’t believe that our designs are going to be sold in Topman. It’s like a dream come true.” Chantelle added: “Its all a bit overwhelming but I am excited that everybody will be able to see our designs and purchase them .” These designs will now go into production, where they will be sent to Calcutta and be made by the Key to Freedom women in India. Despite the winners already being chosen, the Duchess surprised the students and added: “We’re going to start up a website called

Philanthropeneur Limited and are going to make up each one of your designs because everyone has such different tastes.” The University’s ViceChancellor, Professor Bob Cryan, said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity for our students. They have been able to work on a live brief to develop designs for The Duchess of York, and they are working to help the young women who have had such a difficult start to life. It is a great pleasure for us to be able to help with this very worthy project and to also raise funds for this initiative.” I am so happy to have met such an incredible woman, a firm believer, an advocate and individual who has made a difference to the world through her heartening projects. Wows Crowd At Bradford Festival by Ninder Kaur The first multi-award winning British Asian artist wooed the crowd as he headlined at this year’s Bradford Festival at City Park. Apache Indian, the renowned international reggae artist who has had seven Top 40 hits performed a number of his old time classics includingArranged Marriage,Chok There and Dil Luteya. He also performed Boomshakalak which has featured in seven Hollywood films including Scooby Doo and more recently Dumb and Dumber 2. Talking about his performance, Apache said: “It was an absolute pleasure being invited to perform at this year’s festival. Despite the rainy weather on the way down from Birmingham I was a bit apprehensive, but Bradford crowd turned out in full force and didn’t disappoint. Despite it being over 20 years since he last visited Bradford, Apache Indian said how he hopes to return soon. “I want to return soon. There are a lot original fans here from all the communities so Bradford just has to invite and I’ll be back.” Apache is a cult figure amongst Asian and non-Asian

EATING OUT

Cantina93, the new Mediterranean

Bradford has been crowned Curry Capital for the last consecutive four years and rightly so as South Asian cuisine in the district is to die for – BUT and it’s a big BUT if like me you have grown up with curries and are looking for a different offering then you might want to try the new Mediterranean Cantina93. At first I was a little sceptical about trying out the new £80,000 refurbished iconic pub. With most of the stunning features of the Grade II listed former Cock and Bottle pub still retained, I was under the impression the place has perhaps been revamped as an upmarket pub with a new name.

Not being a keen fan of pub food and although I haven’t any reservations of eating in a pub, as long as the food is halal, as a Muslim eating at a pub would only be out of support for a friend or a business meeting. So naturally the proposition to dine at Cantina93 was pretty slim, nevertheless an invite describing that the new 85 seater will serve Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines, including tapas, fish dishes and cured meats with all the food cooked to be halal, how could I resist!

restaurants in Bradford can serve Paella as well as Cantina93.

The food is prepared by their expert head chef Sergio Zappia. Sergio was born in Sicily and brought up in Turin and has over forty year’ of experience of working in Italian kitchens. This shows in the standard of the food that comes out of the kitchen, well presented and cooked to the right tenderness accompanied with

On arrival it was good to see that the former Cock and Bottle pub on Barkerend Pub is no longer the eyesore that it used to be and makes a great new home for the fresh new concept of Cantina93 Cantina93 impresses as cosy restaurant restaurant which which replaces the traditional pub with a fresh new design. The new design has incorporated the stunning large, ornate bar from the old Cock & Bottle pub, along with original internal doors and canopies, screen-work and fi replaces, as well as etched and coloured glass from the 1860s. The decorative Victorian Victorian ceiling ceiling makes makes an impressive feature in the main dining room, room, where the old flooring has been restored and retained wherever possible. The project was completed following a period of controversy around the listed building alterations, as there were objections from pub heritage campaigners, but Bradford Council favoured the development as the best option available to revitalise a deteriorating historic building, retain many of the original features – and still allow them to be seen by the public. Much of the controversy related to an original snug, which the new owners maintained was too tiny to be effectively incorporated into a restaurant. However a larger snug inside the corner entrance is being used as a welcoming reception area where waiting diners can admire the historic features, including a beautiful stained glass window dated around 1900. However now for the most important part of the review – the food! The menu is nice and simple with a variety of options, especially if you are a seafood fan like me, that too when very few (if any

the right sides and herbs and sauces. The prices are reasonable too, with must dishes averaging at around the £6 - £8 price mark, it is most certainly a decent priced night out. I ordered the Sea bass, which came beautifully presented with mushrooms and courgettes, drizzled in a unique olive and lime flavour. The fish was well prepared and cooked to perfection. The vegetables went well with my dish and the portion was just the right size for a foodie like me. For dessert I ordered the strawberry cheesecake, which was offered with a variety of choices. I was impressed with the knowledge and friendliness of the staff and the overall airy, spacious and clean surroundings of the restaurant. Cantina93 definitely does it for me. So if you’re looking for something a little less spicy this Eid, Cantina93 is definitely worth a visit.

As part of their Feed 500 project children at the Rawha Academy, which is based at Lapage Primary School in Bradford put together 500 food parcels to feed the homeless across Yorkshire. Eighty children participated in the project and also delivered packages to churches and homeless charities. Each parcel contained hot food, including rice and chicken dishes, a bottle of water, fruit and crisps.

Also supporting the project was local community pastor, Yemi, she said ‘ This was an excellent initiative and very welcomed by the community as there is lots of food poverty in the District and it great when people help out. All credit to Rawha Academy for this Gift 500 project’ Volunteers helping with Feed 500 felt the project was by far one of the most rewarding and inspiring initiatives. Volunteer Rizwan Rehman told the Asian Sunday “It showed great community resolve and particularly in the month of fasting it gave the true meaning of Islam as one of caring, sharing

and looking after those less fortunate in the community. This is the ethos that we wish to instil in the children”

The following groups benefits from the project:

• Lord Street Methodist Church - Huddersfield

• Leeds New Muslims - Leeds

The Head Teacher, Mr Mohammed Ismail echoed Mr Rehman’s thoughts and added “It was wonderful to see so many people offering to help and support a worthy cause”

• Holy Trinity Church - Leeds

• Welcome Centre Food Bank - Huddersfield

• Hope Housing Association Bradford • Horton Housing Day Shelter - Bradford • SisterZhood - Huddersfield

Fire Service Says #gayisok West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) has backed the #gayisok campaign led by global cosmetics company Lush. The Lush White Rose store has been selling bold golden bars of soap with the words #gayisok to raise money for the All Out charity, which supports human rights in 76 countries where homosexuality is a crime. The Leeds shop sold 359 in just four days, selling out their entire stock and raising £1,436 for All Out. This year WYFRS became a Stonewall Diversity Champion and a team was

formed to promote fire safety in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities and promote best practice throughout the fire service. Area Manager Ian Bitcon has fronted the Stonewall Diversity Champion programme for WYFRS. He was joined by watch commanders Anthony Devine and Chris Kovacs, and workforce development advisor Michaela Hill, at the Lush White Rose store to support its #gayisok campaign. AM Bitcon said: “We are proud to support this positive campaign, which raises

awareness of the oppressive laws many LGBT people live with around the world. “We take our role as Stonewall Diversity Champion very seriously, both in supporting our staff and working with the LGBT community in West Yorkshire. This is just one of many campaigns we hope to support in the future in the hope we can spread safety messages.” Lush White Rose store manager Ashley Scott said: “It is lovely that our message is getting out there and that the fire service , which many see as a very masculine organisation, shows it is accepting of everyone.”

MOTORS NEW FIAT 500 REVEALED July 4 has always been a red-letter date for the FIAT 500. A symbol of mass motorisation in Italy, of which almost 3.8 million were sold, the original FIAT 500 was introduced on this day in 1957. Exactly fifty years later, on July 4 2007, FIAT chose to celebrate that heritage by introducing the New FIAT 500, a car which embodied the same spirit and personality as the original and which has also enjoyed phenomenal success all over the world. Eight years on, with over 1.5 million produced, the torch is now being passed to the New FIAT 500 with which FIAT is preparing to take on new market challenges without forgetting its illustrious roots. Centro Stile FIAT has refreshed the exterior and interior, retaining the unmistakable 500 look that has made it such a global success but at the same time making even more attractive and contemporary. It has not grown in size but it has grown in maturity with advanced technologies, improved efficiency and even more customisation ideas. In this way, FIAT has carefully evolved and refined the features which have made it an Italian masterpiece in the first place.

Bold and seductive, the New FIAT 500 benefits from no fewer than 1,800 innovative detail changes, all designed to enhance the ownership experience and refine its inimitable style. Most noticeable are the new front headlights with LED daytime running lights and the new rear light clusters, not to mention the revised colour palette; the revamped dashboard and the improved materials used throughout. The updates are substantial, with a focus on technological evolution, but loyal to the unmistakable 500 style so as not to upset the successful balance of exclusivity and accessibility it embodies. The FIAT 500 is a global best-seller with a quintessentially Italian heart – elegant and stylish but also affordable and packed with fun – and with its carefully considered enhancements, New FIAT 500 will undoubtedly reassert itself as the benchmark in its segment from every perspective.

Available in two body styles (hatchback and convertible), the New FIAT 500 will be available in three trim levels: Pop, Pop Star and Lounge. All models have LED daytime running lights, seven airbags and a Uconnect infotainment system with six speakers, AUX-IN/USB ports and steering wheel remote controls as standard equipment. The Pop Star version in the UK adds air conditioning, body-colour mirror caps with defrosting function and 15-inch alloy wheels, while the Lounge version adds sophisticated features such as a panoramic glass sunroof, rear parking sensors, a chrome front grille, front fog lights, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and a Uconnect 5” LIVE touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration and numerous built-in apps to help users stay safely connected while on the move. The engine line-up of the New FIAT 500 at launch includes a 0.9-litre TwinAir engine (85hp or 105hp) and a 1.2-litre 69hp unit. The two-cylinder engines boast exceptional efficiency – 90g/km for the 85hp engine and 99g/km for the 105hp unit – while a new ‘Eco’ configurations of the 1.2 litre 69hp (available after the launch) will reduce emissions to 99 grams of CO2 per kilometre (UK availability TBC).

TOYOTA MIRAI GOES THE DISTANCE calculations, and an estimated driving range of 312 miles on a single tank – a distance further than for any other zero-emissions car on the market. Jim Lentz, Toyota North America CEO, announced the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) fuel economy rating for Mirai at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado this week. It confirms that Mirai is the only zero emissions electric vehicle on the market capable of exceeding 300 miles on one fill. Lenz said: “Toyota realised in the early 90s that electrification was key to the future of the automobile. Just as Prius introduced hybrid-electric vehicles to millions of customers nearly 20 years ago, Mirai is now poised to usher in a new era of efficient, hydrogen transportation.” Mirai is the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, a four-door saloon with performance that competes with traditional internal combustion engines. Instead of using petrol, Mirai runs on electricity created on demand by hydrogen fuel and oxygen. The only emission produced by this process is water vapour. Hydrogen fuel cell saloon sets record driving range for any zero-emissions car on the market The new Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has proved it can go the distance, achieving 67 miles per gallon in official US combined city/highway driving

Toyota will introduce Mirai in limited numbers in the UK and other selected European markets later this year, following its launch in Japan and, from this summer, California.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT SPEED Bentley is taking its fusion of luxury and performance to new extremes with the launch of the Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series. This exclusive series is limited to just seven cars, each inspired by one of the seven Breitling Jets. Renowned for their precision, speed and daring, this summer the Breitling Jet Team will be performing across the United States and Canada in a grand tour of epic proportions. To commemorate this spectacle, Bentley’s Mulliner division has re-imagined the Continental GT Speed to mirror the distinctive look of the Breitling Jets, fusing extreme customisation with immense speed. The exterior is painted in a striking duo-tone split of Hallmark and Onyx with highlights colour matched to the exact Pantone of Breitling’s unique Yellow, reflecting the trademark look of the L-39 Albatros Jets. This bespoke colour theme is continued on the interior, with unique sculpted seats featuring accents in Breitling Yellow. Taking customisation to new heights, each car is individually numbered and corresponds to one of the seven Breitling Jets. The dashboard’s carbon fibre fascia panel displays an image of the seven planes in their signature Avenger flight formation, with the corresponding jet highlighted in Breitling Yellow. Similarly, Mulliner has matched the hide and thread to Breitling’s signature yellow and designed a series of logos and graphics for the headrests that highlight the number of each car and the jet that inspired it. The tread plate plaques are also individually numbered. The series will debut at the Boeing Seafair Airshow on 31st July in Seattle, where

the Breitling Jet Team is performing. The key for each car will be handed over to its owner by the corresponding plane’s pilot, but not until they have experienced a flight in the jet that inspired their car. Geoff Dowding, Director of Mulliner, said: “The Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series demonstrates the level of customisation Mulliner can achieve for customers. Creating this very special edition has been an exciting experience for the entire team, taking inspiration from the Breitling Jet Team’s grand tour.”

by Ayyaz Malik England bravely bowed out of the women’s football world cup after an agonising defeat to world champions Japan. England who were seen as underdogs by many, quietly went about their business and exceeded expectations in this tournament. Their male counterparts have always been overhyped which has led to so much heartbreak for us fans. With the case of England’s women you had players who might have been in experienced - but these players were ‘hungry’. Key players such as Eni Aluko a somewhat veteran at 28 was largely restricted to appearances from off the bench. Managed by Mark Sampson who took over from Hope Powell, many were sceptical of England’s chances of making an impression at the women’s world cup. In Mark Sampson however England have coach who is young and someone who has achieved success. Sampson has achieved success with Bristol Ladies. Inexperienced at this level meant lead to many thinking that Mark Sampson didn’t have the tactical nous at this level but with very brave and bold substitutions the Welshman proved his doubters wrong. At the start of their campaign, many of England’s doubters looked to be proved right. Flat and lacking a spark, England succumbed to France in the

opening game by a single goal. This defeat against the side who knocked them out on penalties in the last world cup meant that England needed to win their last two games to qualify.

Tight in defence, this Japan team won five of their six games by a goal to nil. Along their route the Japanese did earn a controversial win over China - but as champions you get that look sometimes.

Thankfully England were able to do that as they were starting to grow into the tournament. Wins against Mexico and Columbia soon followed which saw The Lionesses progress to the quarter finals. That match would see them up against former world cup winners and beaten European cup finalists Norway in the round of 16.

For England this was a match that whatever happened these ladies could go back home with their heads held high. After all who would have thought at the start of the tournament an inexperienced England side would even get this far, I for certainly wasn’t one.

A tricky test many thought but again England’s Lionesses passed the test with flying colours. This win over Norway would see England pit their wits against hosts Canada who got through to this stage with solid if not spectacular performances. Again to England’s credit they overcame this test with flying colours. The visitors raced into a two goal lead but hosts Canada who pulled a goal back weren’t able to save the game as England booked a date with defending champions Japan in the semifinals. This semi-final match with Japan so any England male or female reach a semi-final of a major completion for the first time since 1996. Japan who many would have seen as the favourites for this game due to their experience, just like Canada had a solid passage through to the last four.

The match itself was a brilliant one, and one which England defender Laura Bassett will want to forget. Very much the underdogs for this one, England fell behind to a Aya Miyama penalty. The Lionesses who have shown real strength of character throughout this world cup, didn’t allow that disappointment of going a goal down affect them for long. They were level seven minutes later with a penalty of their own which was converted by Farah Williams. That goal inspired England as England’s Lionesses pressed Japan high up the pitch which lead to the Japanese into making a lot of mistakes. Japan’s keeper was brilliant in the second half as she made several important saves to keep the defending champions in the tournament. Just for good measure England hit the wood work as well to really crank up the pressure on the defending

England’s Lioness’ Roar but Not Loud Enough Unfortunately

champions. The Lionesses were pushing very hard and seemed like the team most likely to win this game - but as the game was coming towards the end of the 90 minutes and extra time seeming imminent disaster struck. Laura Bassett who was brilliant on the day, had the misfortune of putting the ball into her own net in the most freakish of circumstances. Bassett who was under pressure from Japan’s forwards intercepted a cross which agonisingly looped over the England goalkeepers head and into the goal. That goal saw Japan retake the lead and it was a lead which they didn’t have time to surround this time. Japan are now into the final and will face USA in a repeat of the final in the last world cup. USA beat Germany who ranked world number one in the women’s game 2-0. Despite enjoying a 10-0 win over the Ivory Coast, it’s USA who progress into the final giving them the chance to avenge the defeat they suffered to Japan in the last world cup.

As for England they have the small consolation of having the chance to beat the Germans in the third place play off. I am sure they would have loved to have been playing in their first final - and England’s first final in the men’s or women’s game in nearly 50 years. The women’s world cup draws to close on Monday 6 July and what a great tournament it has been. There has been some shocks as well such as Australia beating Brazil and of course England getting to the semi-finals. For those who think women’s football is a joke, then think again. England’s Lionesses showed England’s men how you play for the shirt. Greg Dyke you might need to put Mark Sampson’s number on speed dial if England have a poor Euro 2016. Women’s football is on the rise. There is only way for the women game and that is most definitely up. England’s Lionesses have been an inspiration to a nation. Mark Sampson even though you’re a Welshman you lead England with great pride, you should be proud of yourself sir.

Lifts Others When Others Feel Down by Ayyaz Malik For those of you who are fasting, I am sure you will know the energy that is needed to keep one, especially in the heat. Tariq Khan a thirty year old body builder who boasts of winning all the classes he has entered in is not only doing just that - but is inspiring others by training them in the muscle factory gym.

In life one can be guilty of procrastinating and making excuses of not achieving goals - but in Tariq’s case his selfless work just shows a lot can be done if you have the right mentality. Tariq Khan who first started competing in 2014 entered a local bodybuilding competition called Mr Pennine which he won. Khan competed in the first timers and novices’ category. Other achievements such as

winning events at National level soon followed. Khan ever since doing bodybuilding has yet to

taste defeat, and Tariq Khan will be hoping that will continue. A contributing factor to Khans success is his sponsorship agreement with ‘Muscle Xcess Protein Company’ and the local wholesale supplier of seafood. The thirty year old champion will have the

chance to keep his unbeaten run going when he goes to Rome for the world championships in October. Be sure to keep track of Khan’s progress with Asian Sunday.

Shapla Host Fasting Event by Ayyaz Malik Ramadan is a month which people from the Muslim faith see as a way of getting closer to God by giving up food and drink. Shapla FC with that in

mind decided to use Ramadan as a way of bringing people from the local community together - and also encouraging them to give up food and drink for one day in aim to help them gain a better understanding of fasting.

The event which was at BEAP sports hall on Wednesday 1 July and was attended by former footballer Anwar Uddin. Uddin who manages Sporting Bengal among other things, gave a short speech following the organiser

Humayun Islam’ introduction to the event. Also on the day there was a chance to ask about Ramadan, fasting and football. The evening is a follow up to the BEAP event

which was held in February. That event saw over 100 young people from the local community take part in activities that were organised by Kick It Out, FSF, Bradford City and West Riding FA.

Ashes for Rashid by Ayyaz Malik

For those of you who can’t wait, you will be relieved to know that there isn’t much waiting left for the Ashes to start. The Ashes as it is known will see old adversaries England and Australia lock horns yet again. The two old foes will have a chance to do their talking on the pitch on 8th July in Cardiff when the first test of five tests starts. The Aussies who regained their status as world champions with their win over arch rivals New Zealand, will come into this one in confident mood. Not only have the Australian’s been impressive on one day cricket, they have also been impressive on the test circuit as well. Wins over England (5-0) in the reverse fixture (sorry England fans) and South Africa away from have highlighted this Australia team is strong. Key to their success has been several factors such as their left arm duo of Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson. Both were key to Australia’s world cup success on home soil, especially Starc - but to just give those players all the credit would be a massive dishonour to this fantastic side. To compliment the pace bowlers which also includes Peter Siddle and Josh Hazelwood there is also off spinner Nathan Lyon. I was going to mention Ryan Harris - but thankfully he is retired, well if you’re an England fan that is. The 27 year old Lyon has gone about his business in very impressive fashion. Nathan Lyon in a team that has an abundance of seam talent, has been the ‘go to’ option for Captain Michael Clarke. If it isn’t the bowlers that is the most impressive thing about this Australia team then surely their batsman deserve a

mention. David Warner, Chris Rogers, Steven Smith, Brad Haddin are just some of the batsmen’s names that have been brilliant. Notice how I haven’t included Australia’s brilliant captain Michael Clarke. If there is one slight weakness then maybe it’s Clarke and his never ending injury issues with his back. The 32 year old who’s talent speaks for itself, has somewhat struggled with his injuries of late. The right hander only just made the world cup squad. Never the less though this Australia team are the full deal, the full package. Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson are no mugs with the bat either, both have posted test fifties. So with Australia you have bowlers who can bowl and some bowlers who can bat, is there any hope for England this summer? Well in sport you never say never. Where England do have a chance is maybe that there team is younger and that might mean fresher. England do on the plus side have the deadly duo of Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad at their disposal, them to speak for themselves. On English pitches many would expect these two to really cause havoc to the Australian batting line up - but England aren’t just a two man bowling attack. England do have options of their own. Moeen Ali has been a very handy spin option and has shown what he can do with a very impressive burst again India last summer, which helped his country win the game. To compliment those three has been Mark Wood. Wood who was unknown in the drawn test series with New Zealand was impressive and made a good impression. That in itself could be something that works in England’s favour, the fact that Mark Wood isn’t well known in the international circuit. The

recall of Steven Finn is also a good call - but the Middlesex man can go for runs at times. For so long the criticism from many (myself) has been England’s lack of spin options. Thankfully England have listened to me and included Adil Rashid, Rashid is an example of a player who can bat and genuinely spin the ball. Talking of batsmen this is where I am really worried about England and in particular the opening combination. Yes both players are talented players and in Alistair Cooks case his record speaks for itself- but it’s Adam Lyth who could be vulnerable. The 27 year old Lyth who had a mixed series against New Zealand, could be a

weakness due to potential lack of experience at this level - but the Yorkshire opener is definitely a talented player. Then again this is the same Adam Lyth who scored a hundred against a very good New Zealand attack, so there is a reason to be optimistic. I very nearly forgot to mention England’s man of the moment Ben Stokes. The Durham man is crucial not just with his batting but now his bowling as well. Stokes has been in a real purple patch and his quick run scoring will be crucial for England should they get into trouble. Ben Stokes does also bowl right arm fast medium, so that would take a potential burden off the main seam trio of what would most likely be Anderson, Wood and Broad.

Published by RF Publishing Ltd, 1 Edmund Street, Bradford, BD5 1HA Company Reg No. 9615401 (in small print)

All in all then I think it’s fair to say that I think both sides have their weaknesses. Strangely enough I think what could be praise by some is a potential sign of weakness for me, with both teams. England have the younger team average if you will and this could be a disadvantage due to their lack of experience. Australia have the older team average and this might be a disadvantage, due to the fact that this could expose some of the older Australia players in a potentially gruelling five match series. If I was betting man though however I would think Australia will win this. England this is your chance to make me eat humble pie.
