The new survey also reveals around half the population support calls for a tax on fatty and sugary foods, perhaps unsurprising considering the United Kingdom has some of the worst levels of obesity in Western Europe. Health concerns appear to be a priority for many, especially following the election. The same research also discovered more than one in three (37 per cent) say treating the big five

killers – cancer, heart disease, strokes, respiratory and liver disease – is the area of the NHS they are most concerned with2. The survey, carried out by oral health charity the British Dental Health Foundation, is the first to assess the public’s potential support for the taxes, all of which health experts believe would go a long way to addressing current and future levels of health in the UK. Nazar Singh, born on June 8, 1904, is thought to be Britain’s oldest man at one hundred and eleven years of age. Mr Singh received a letter from the Queen on his 100th birthday and has been sent one every year since, along with an annual letter and phone call from the Department For Work and Pensions to see how he is. He grew up in Punjab, India, moved to England in 1965 and worked hard in a foundry, living in Walsall for almost 25 years before retiring to Sunderland in 1989. The centenarian has nine children, 34 grandchildren and 64 greatgrandchildren and was married to his wife, Narajan Kaur, for 70 years before

she died 12 years ago, aged 90. He has never had an operation, retains some of his original teeth and has perfect hearing. Mr Singh was raised in a village in Punjab and from the age of 10 helped his family to grow sugar cane, cotton, corn, wheat and later chilli, peanuts, potatoes and rice. The oldest person believed to be alive today is 116-year-old Jeralean Talley, from the United States, who was born in 1899. There are only two living men believed to be older than Mr Singh - Japanese Sakari Momori and Yasutaro Koide, who are both 112 and were born in 1903.

Charlie Charlie Challenge Causes International Hysteria as Concerns over Jinns and Devils Circulate. Asian Sunday Investigates…. Since early May, the dubious Ouija-board inspired game ― Charlie Charlie Challenge ― has taken the Internet by storm. According to reports, the Charlie Charlie Challenge has been played by millions of young people across the globe. The strange new game became a viral trend worldwide and even took over Twitter and under #CharlieCharlieChallenge, fuelled by speculation that its players can connect with a dead Mexican spirit known as Charlie. The game involves balancing one pencil on top of another and daring a demon called Charlie to answer questions by making it point to prewritten answers on the paper below. Hundreds of teens have uploaded videos - from the UK to the United States, Sweden and Singapore - in which they ask, ‘Charlie, Charlie, are you there?’ and then flee in terror when the pencil appears to move by itself. Scientists put the supernatural phenomenon down to simple gravity and behaviour known as ‘response expectancy’,

which means people will try to move the pencil through their movement or breathing without realising because they are so engrossed in the moment. The interest in getting in touch with the unknown would be exciting for any young person, but reports that people are being hurt and in some cases death are doing the rounds. A report, was first released by The Racket Report, claiming that at least 500 people across the United States have died mysteriously under unexplained circumstances after playing Charlie Charlie Challenge, noting that those who died bore no signs of illness, injury or foul play. However, according The Racket Report’ About Us page of the website, the articles and stories published on its site are for entertainment purposes only and are work of fiction. A similar report, which was later established to be fake, had claimed that three teenage girls were beaten and raped by ‘Charlie demon’ in Philadelphia while playing the popular Ouija boardinspired game.

The stories have been so inane that even an official Vatican exorcist thought the game was dangerous as it involves the summoning of spirits. Spanish priest Jose Antonio Fortea told reporters that “some spirits who are at the root of that practice will harass some of those who play the game.” He also said that the demon which is

summoned “will stay around for a while,” and warned that other spirits will eventually start appearing as well. Even members of the Islamic community in Jamaica recently in a statement condemned the Charlie Charlie Challenge as evil. They said that the game “should be taken very seriously, as it may release

demonic elements (jinn), causing the individuals who play the game to become possessed by demons,” One News Now reported. American evangelist Billy Graham also reportedly has released a statement urging parents to keep their children away from experimenting in Satanic occult practices such as Charlie Charlie Challenge.

Rohingya – “the most persecuted people on earth”

by Ruhul Tarafdar Once again we are witnessing the continual suffering of the Rohingya. Described by the UN as the most persecuted people on earth, the world stands by as thousands of Rohingya are lost at sea. People are so desperate that the BBC reports that they are drinking their own urine just to survive on the boats. It shows how cheap the lives of these people are. I sometimes wonder if the Rohingya were Caucasian, would the world’s nations be so fast to close their doors and borders and let these helpless people drown and starve to death at sea. In recent days what has been found on land has been equally disturbing. In the hills between Malaysia and Thailand, nearly 150 mass graves have been uncovered with the bodies of what is believed to be thousands of Rohingya Muslims who became victims of human trafficking whilst fleeing persecution in Myanmar. In Myanmar, out of what is already a dwindling population, there are around 140,000 Rohingya who fled the fighting in 2012 and are sheltering in camps described

by UN officials as having the worst conditions in the world, inhumane and simply open air prisons. There are approximately 200,000 Rohingya Muslims living in Bangladesh, the vast majority in the region of Cox’s Bazar. About 30,000 are registered refugees who live in the two Camps run by the United Nations. The rest are unregistered, also known as undocumented. Speaking a Bengali dialect similar to one in southeast Bangladesh, the Rohingya people are Muslims but are seen as illegal immigrants by the Buddhist-majority Myanmar Government and many of Myanmar’s citizens. Thousands try to escape and many end up in Bangladesh. Here conditions are better than in Myanmar but not by much. Towards the end of last year, I visited two camps located in Kutupalong and Nayapara. I was there to distribute Qurbani meat from donations collected by the charity I work for. Many of the families I visited had never tasted meat before. I had to bypass much red tape and many logistical problems in order to even get to the camps. The suffering I saw when I eventually got there is

For the registered refugees living inside the camps life is certainly tough but they are the lucky ones. For the 70,000 refugees living outside, conditions can only be described as horrendous. The houses are made of mud and whatever pieces of plastic and junk that can be put together to try and keep the rain and winds out. I have never witnessed such hardship, desperation and disease on such a level before. They are living in nothing more than ghettos.

So how did this situation come about and why are they fleeing from their homes? The 1982 Citizenship Law of Myanmar, which ignored the Rohingya’s claim to citizenship and thus rendered them stateless, has formed the legal basis for arbitrary and discriminatory treatment against the Rohingya community and made them subject to a series of draconian policies and controls. Some have been ‘burnt out’ through the destruction of their homes and properties. Those who were not displaced have been cut off from their livelihoods and face difficulty in accessing food and basic services. Of course we need to do everything possible to address this humanitarian catastrophe but we also need to look at the role the Burmese government has had in creating it. The regime has followed a deliberately ruthless policy of using a combination of merciless repression and abject poverty to drive the centuries old Rohingya minority out of Myanmar. The government continues to deny the very

existence of the Rohingya. It is clear that without pressure from the international community, the lives of the Rohingya will continue to be one of fear and persecution. To some extent, I understand the position of the Bangladesh government which feels allowing more Rohingya into Bangladesh would be in effect to allow

the Myanmar Government to ethnically cleanse Myanmar of its Rohingya population, thus driving them out of their homes. Governments of the world must do more and need to pressure the Myanmar government to change its policies which are bordering on genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Politics with Zaf Shah Research by the Runnymede Trust suggests that British Muslims make up 4.8% of the UK population. They are the second largest faith group in the UK after Christians and have the youngest age profile of all religious groups with 48 per cent of Muslims aged 24 and under (Mend 2015). This brings with it significant opportunities for political parties competing for minority group votes at the ballot box. With that and particularly in election year and in most cases the incumbent party will look

very closely at how their manifesto pledges will impact on the BME communities. In 2010 The Ethnic Minority British Election Study from the 2010 general election found that Muslims are less likely than other minority groups to be registered to vote, and in places like Bradford West won’t vote for the Conservative Party. Historically, albeit a three year lull BW has been a Labour stronghold. This can be due to a number of factors, lack of meaningful representation of political

leaders often cited as one of the causes. (Heath et al 2012). Some refer to the 1968 Enoch Powell Rivers of Blood Speech as still having an effect on the minds of many in votingham, I would disagree, this may have been the case 20 – 30 years ago, but many from the BME communities would argue that it’s about having a coherent, and articulate voice in parliament, who represents all communities in the constituency and not just his/ her vested interest.

Of course, some would say if the Conservative party manifesto or indeed any parties is tailored as a tool of engagement for all communities, not just BME, then those very same communities will mobilise in furthering the social, civic, economic and political aspects of their lives, indeed furthering the integration of particularly British Muslims in UK society? Did the Conservative Party have specific pledges that were designed solely for BME communities or Muslims? I would argue that if indeed a party such as a One Nation Conservative Party designed pledges for particular communities, then it would possibly be failing its own vision and the vision of the wider electorate, therefore as we discussed earlier, if our communities are disengaged from politics with no real representation or leaders to be their voice, then what

difference will a few pledges make? Why do in the case of Bradford West particularly Pakistani communities think the Tory Party are the “nasty racist party”, when it was the Tory Party who gave us our first Pakistani female Muslim member of the cabinet, our First Pakistani Muslim Business Secretary, need I say more? It’s the Conservative Party that has provided the right environment in which talent from within the BME have not viewed their ethnicity as a barrier for success. Perhaps in the build up to the General Election of 2015 the Tory Hierarchy didn’t engage as well as it could have with Muslim communities, but one thing that was clearly evidenced was David Cameron made no bones about meeting and greeting with large swathes of Sikh and Hindu electorates in votingham, who gave Mr

Cameron the very push from BME communities that the party so desired. Perhaps we ought to reflect and think why the push with Sikh and Hindu communities and not Muslim Communities? Are they more intelligently engaged with mainstream British Politics than Muslim Communities?

and working why would British Muslims be prepared to travel and participate in violent and an often brutal armed struggle with Isis and its enemies. I think it’s extremely difficult for any government to absolutely get it right every time in terms of the narrative whenever anti-terror legislation is proposed. If you have done nothing wrong then why should this worry you? I honestly have greater concerns, such as the Economy, Jobs, Schools and Health inequalities than to be overly concerned with antiterror legislation. The Queen’s Speech added to the resentment from BME communities, with policies that impacted into the very heart of BME community concerns on immigration and over -reliance on the state welfare system, again it’s the tone of the debate rather than the controls that are proposed. Why are some third and fourth generations so reliant on the state, I thought the state was meant as a last resort not an

option? My father was one of the first migrants in Bradford and didn’t claim from the state, but integrated, grafted, and often worked several jobs to provide for our growing family. A theme that was all too common during the 1960’s and 70’s when migration from Pakistani Mirpur was at its peak. With a fragmented Labour Party having no clear direction, I think we will see the Conservative Party in Power for the next ten years and with that, what can be said is that most BME, particularly Muslim voters will switch their allegiances over time to the party they feel most connected with and whose values are not entirely dissimilar to theirs. Yet it must be said, this is by no means is a one way street, and if the Conservative Party is serious about engaging with Muslim Communities then it also has to play its part. The Conservative party are here to stay and we ought to be embracing the political winds of change rather than batting against them.

‘East’ Set to Boom Asian Retail Shopping The launch of East Shopping Centre, a high-end Asian retail development opening on Green Street, has been attracting thousands of shoppers ever since it’s opening earlier this year. The centre, referred to simply as ‘East’, is the first of its kind in London and has been supported by residents as well as the council. It has 56 shops, a “souk” market and food court over two-storey’s of retail space and opened to over 12,000 visitors during its launch weekend. Green Street is already a renowned destination for Asian shopping, primarily clothes, fashion, accessories and food. So it was no surprise that units at the upmarket shopping centre were quickly taken up by fashion houses such as Andaaz fashions, Bidaai London, Memsaab, Coffee Republic and Brioche Burgers with more being announced. East has been designed to tiein with the street’s existing ethos and augment it with a fresh range of relevant, contemporary retail units.

East has been planned as part of East London’s wider regeneration process with luxury Asian brands and high-quality goods. Westfield Stratford City, which attracted 47 million visitors in its first year, is located 2.2 miles away from East. It’s the mostvisited mall in the country (with double the footfall attained by Westfield London in Shepherds Bush) and enjoys easy access to DLR, Overground, tube, National Rail and bus services. East is a more compact, specialised shopping centre, but it’s likely that it will build a positive relationship with Westfield, both in terms of benefiting from shoppers in the area and complimenting Westfield’s wide-ranging shopping experience with something relevant to London’s Asian population. One of the more unique elements of the East development is the souk section. Seventeen bespoke units, ranging in size from 9.7sqm to 32.3sqm, offer smaller retailers - both

established and exclusive - a characterful retail platform. Combining the modern shopping experience with the elegance and tradition of the souk, this project is the first of its kind in London. This is just the latest instalment in the story of Asian business in London, however. Patak’s is one of the UK’s most recognisable Asian brands. Sold by the founding family to Associated British Foods for an undisclosed amount over £100m in 2007, it’s also an example of a business that delivers (and in some ways introduced) Asian produce to London’s nonAsian population. The original shop, behind Euston station, stocked Asian groceries but diversified into innovative curry and spice mix pastes, preserved in oil, that neatly

filled a gap in the market. Westfield Stratford City and indeed Bluewater in Kent (located very close to Ebbsfleet International Eurostar station) attract visitors from all over the Continent – East could become important to Asian populations beyond England. Travelling from Stratford International or London City Airport will take overseas visitors around half an hour by public transport. A spokesperson for the development told Asian Sunday that while there was no firm idea of where shoppers would come from, the centre will be significant internationally as well as locally. “It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where people will be coming from,” a

spokesperson told Asian Sunday before the opening. “We certainly hope that visitors from Europe, America, the subcontinent, etc, will be interested in shopping at East. London’s South Asian population has a long and illustrious history of dressmaking and seamstressing. Women living at home in the mid20th Century would learn and develop sewing skills, creating garments not only for their families but for sale in the community. As East is located in London’s prime bridal shopping district, and with Green Street already home to some popular clothes shops, some of this heritage is likely to live on through the development.

If fashion wasn’t enough East’s food court is also pretty impressive with a diverse range of food choices, from Indian food to steak houses, something to suit all appetites. “It’s a good mix – not all Indian food.” The whole of East has been designed and constructed to exacting modern standards, not just in terms of comfort and aesthetics – and the huge glass-topped atrium makes for a spectacular venue - but also with environmental effects in mind. Technology such as flow restrictors and harvesters have been installed to prevent water wastage, while solar panels will help reduce electricity consumed from the national grid. Two-storey retail units contain a stair lift and there are disabled access provisions throughout. The centre has been under construction for over a year at the one-acre site, which used to be a bus depot. Granted planning permission in 2012, the project attracted considerable attention from the Asian community. Despite some worries about parking and increased congestion, East has been accepted as a positive addition to Green Street and a welcome source of jobs (between 150 and 200) to the local economy. The partners at ACR Investments, who ran the development, said: “We couldn’t be more excited to have made history with East Shopping Centre, being the first development of its kind in Europe. “The borough of Newham is a wonderful district with so much potential and Green Street is already a major hub for people to shop for clothes, food, accessories and everything in between.” Since East opened its doors with great interest and fanfare from the Asian community in London and further afield, it’s clear that Green Street has set the trend for a significant new shopping destination.

Location, Location, Location is the Key to a New Home The familiar phrase ‘location, location, location’ still holds true when buying a new home according to research released by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks recently Whilst the economic downturn has had a major impact on the housing market, it hasn’t changed the importance placed on living in the right area for 59% of homeowners in the UK according to the annual Homebuyers Research. The pressures of commuting resulted in Londoners being the most focused in finding a property in close proximity to their workplace. For and Against the Human Rights Act 1988 The Human Rights Act 1998 (also known as the Act or the HRA) came into force in the United Kingdom in October 2000. It is composed of a series of sections that have the effect of codifying the protections in the European Convention on Human Rights into UK law.

All public bodies (such as courts, police, local governments, hospitals, publicly funded schools, and others) and other bodies carrying out public functions have to comply with the Convention rights.

About Ahmedur Rahman Ahmedur is a Solicitor specialising in commercial property and regularly advises Directors on corporate governance issues. He joined the Conservative Party in 2009 and has stood as a council candidate in the London Borough of Newham. During the 2015 General Election, he was the Political Agent to a Parliamentary candidate. He is also an Executive Member of the Conservative Muslim Forum (CMF) and is also listed in the “Brightest 100” – a publication highlighting the 100 most influential British Bangladeshis in the UK.

The Human Rights Act (1998) came into force in October 2000 and allows UK nationals to rely upon the rights contained in the European Convention on Human Rights 1951 (European Convention) in UK Courts. Repealing the Act does not affect the UK’s obligation under the European Convention – this is an international treaty which the UK helped draft and was the first nation to ratify it, meaning we promised to respect the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg. The Act has been controversial. It is widely misunderstood by the public and applied by public authorities in an unbalanced way. And it’s not difficult to see why. Strasbourg has used the European Convention as a “living instrument” which evolves and adapts leading to interpretations which had not been contemplated in the 1950’s. The problem is, the Act requires the UK to take into account rulings of the ECtHR, so that the meaning of the Convention rights given in Strasbourg apply to our laws. This has led to some problematic and controversial rulings from Strasbourg applying to our national law, undermining Parliamentary

sovereignty and, in turn, undermining democratic accountability to the public. However, perhaps the most controversial part of the Act is its requirement for the UK Courts to give

effect to primary legislation in a way that is compatible with the European Convention “so far as it is possible to do so”. In practice this has led to judges artificially stretching the meaning of primary legislation. For

example, an examination of whether a certain act by a public authority is ‘proportionate’ to its objectives, requires a political evaluation of that policy. The courts have therefore become “activist” in dealing with what are effectively political questions - a domain preserved for Parliament, not only under s.3(2)(b) and (c) of the Act itself, but also under the “separation of powers” doctrine which underlines the UK’s unwritten (or as the author would argue, uncodified) constitution. Where primary legislation cannot be interpreted in a way compatible with the European Convention, the courts can make a declaration of incompatibility. This has no binding legal effect and, in itself does not remedy the breach. So, let’s be clear on what’s being proposed. The Conservative’s pledge is to repeal the Human Rights Act and replace it with a Bill of Rights and Responsibilities where Parliament is the ultimate source of legal authority and the UK courts supreme in the interpretation of the law. The new Bill will enshrine the original European Convention into primary legislation, with its rights and responsibilities given clearer definitions. The European Convention imposes an obligation to secure the rights and freedoms in the convention for its citizens and to provide an effective remedy where those rights and freedoms have been breached. There is no requirement to take into account rulings from the ECtHR. Therefore, the Bill will remove the requirement of domestic courts to take into account Strasbourg’s rulings. This doesn’t mean they couldn’t or wouldn’t – often human rights cases from abroad influence the court, but the UK courts will no longer be bound to follow Strasbourg’s jurisprudence. Any important advancements in human rights will be put to a vote in Parliament to see if primary legislation should to be amended. The Bill will be open to public consultation later this year. I hope all sides of the argument will take the opportunity to take part in the UK’s commitment to human rights. As for me, the HRA started out to achieve a noble cause, but failed. Replacing such a system is not an attack on human rights but a criticism of the way it applies. To defend the rights and freedoms of the individual with a clear, coherent set of rights and responsibilities, but in a manner which does not undermine British democracy is too a noble cause.

Why we need the Human Rights Act (HRA) considered to be a new symbol that would unite people under one common vision; that of human rights.

The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is an international treaty signed by many nations including Britain in 1948 in order to secure basic rights for its citizens. Many rights are protected such as the right to life, prohibition of torture, freedom from slavery under right to liberty. Other rights include a right to a fair trial, prohibition of retroactive criminal legislation; right to an effective legal remedy. Personal life rights include the right to private and family life; freedom of thought; the right to marry and freedom from discrimination. Rights to promote communication and participation in society include freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. There are additional rights which are included in protocols to the Convention, which evolved over time.

The Tories in recent years and since forming a majority government in May 2015, plan to scrap the HRA and replace this with a British Bill of Rights. At present, the Tories have put their plans on hold pending further consultations. According to Sir Keir Starmer, the MP for Holborn and St. Pancras, “The HRA contains universal rights that are approved by the world.” HRA has been used by vulnerable people in the UK such as the disabled, the mentally ill, the elderly and those in residential care. It has protected the rights of asylum seekers and irregular migrants. The Tories have justified their reasons for scrapping the HRA by saying that it protects foreign criminals and terrorists and undermines the government’s powers to deport. The Tories have sensationalised stories to create a culture of fear within our society. As a consequence, the government is falsely leading us to believe that we are giving away our basic rights in return for greater security. Britain has a proud history of promoting human rights at home and abroad. Scrapping the HRA would

mean removing the universality of rights and this would have dangerous consequences. According to Shami Chakrabarti of Liberty, citizens’ rights shall be reduced to mere privileges. The Tories want to scrap the HRA simply because it currently prevents them from interfering with our human rights. The Tories have already indicated their desire to exclude certain groups of people from human rights protection. They criticise the decision of the Strasbourg judges as ‘bizarre’ which undermines parliamentary sovereignty. However, the truth is that the HRA is the best model which will protect our human rights and give us the right to hold governments accountable when they interfere with our rights. If the HRA were scrapped we would face obstacles in challenging our government for interfering with our rights. The more people understand about the HRA, the more they will appreciate and understand what they have to lose. It has never been a more important time to educate ourselves about the government plans to scrap the HRA and what this means for everyone. It is also important to lobby our MPs and actively engage in campaigning to save the HRA.

After 50 years the ECHR was incorprated into UK law when the Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA) came into effect in 2000. This did not create any new human rights laws but effectively incorporated ECHR into domestic UK law. The Act gives every British Citizen their rights and responsibilities and public services are required to respect human rights at every level. As the UK does not have a written Constitution, it was hoped that the HRA will become the first Bill of Rights for both UK citizens and all peoples living in Britain. It was

edding season has begun. Although it might be a fun time to start celebrating with your friends it can be a stressful time too. Being invited to a South Asian wedding may seem like a really exciting and colourful experience until you realise you have no idea what to wear. It leaves you to question -do I have to wear a sari? What colour do I wear? What about all those accessories? It’s all a bit too overwhelming to say the least.

There is no need to panic. For anyone who may be invited to an Asian wedding, here is a quick guide to dressing for the occasion. • Indian and Pakistani clothing is beautiful, colourful and detailed. Try avoiding wearing anything white and black and be experimental. • Avoid dresses and outfits that show too much leg and scream boobage especially if the couple comes from a religious family. Dress modestly. Leave the strapless, tight fitting, figure hugging dress for another time. It will not be taken well by the South Asian community. • If you’re feeling extra adventurous then why not take a trip to an Asian clothing store.

There are plenty of styles to choose from including saris, salwar kameez (long top with loose trousers) and lenghas, which are long skirts that come with a matching top.

• Accesorising is the most fun part. There is so much to choose from including bindis, bangles, and beautiful ornate necklaces. Many girls will also wear payal, or anklets. The mang tikkas (a huge bindi) have also become quite popular. • For men, do not go scruffy. Skip the jeans and t-shirts and dress formal, as you would do at any wedding. There is nothing more embarrassing than being ‘that’ slobby guest. Whip out that suit and tie and be a gentlemen. If you really want to impress your friend on their special wedding day, then why not try on the traditional sherwani. They come in a number of customised styles and designs at affordable prices too. Not only will you will look super handsome but you may even surprise yourself and outshine the rest of the guests. • If you are attending a Muslim nikah or a Sikh wedding at the gurdwara you will have to cover your head. So always keep a shawl/scarf or bandana with you.

Hair Removal at Home Facial and body hair in women is considered unfeminine and is quite embarrassing for many women. The good thing is there are many methods to get rid of unwanted hair. Of the many methods of hair removal the popular ones are bleaching, shaving, threading, waxing, tweezing, depilatories and laser hair removal.

Take equal quantities of moong dal powder, neem leaves powder, kasturi manjal powder and few kuppai meni leaves. Grind it to a paste with very less water. Apply on skin and leave it to dry. After 15-20 minutes, scrub your face gently in the direction of hair growth to remove unwanted fine hair.

Home treatment 1 Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent. Mix gram pulse flour (besan), wheat flour, milk cream, a few drops of fresh lemon juice, mustard oil and water together. Rub this paste in circular movements and wash it off. Do it regularly. Start this treatment from an early age as hair is soft and fine at that time. Home treatment 2 Mix sugar, water and lemon juice to a thick paste. Apply it and wash it off when it dries. Do this once a week to prevent hair growth.

Home treatment 5 Potatoes when combined with yellow lentil will help in effectively removing unwanted hair. Potatoes have natural bleach properties in them. The combination of these two items will help in making the hair colour lighter. One potato You need to soak a small bowl of yellow lentils in water overnight. Peel off the skin of the potato and

Now you need to extract the juice from the crushed potato and add it to the yellow lentil paste. To this mixture add around 4 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice and one tablespoon honey and mix well. Apply this mixture on your face and other parts of the body where you have unwanted hair. Leave it to rest on your body parts for about 20 to 30 minutes or until the paste completely dries out. Now remove the paste from the a-plied area by rubbing your fingers over the paste. The dry lentil paste will pull off the hair from your body as you rub the paste. You need to repeat this process two to three times in a fortnight to get rid of unwanted hair completely. These natural remedies, if followed regularly, discourage hair growth over a period of time. It also helps to get rid of very fine facial hair on upper lips and chin.

1. Use Dry Shampoo Dry shampoo has been gaining popularity recently; I always encourage the use of dry shampoo during summer for individuals more prone to oiliness. As the name suggests, dry shampoo absorbs the oil in your hair and gives it a softness, and more importantly voluminous shape. It becomes effective after a few days of not washing your hair. I strongly recommend my clients to avoid washing their hair everyday, as it makes it more prone to oiliness. 2. Avoid Excessive Shampooing If you have dry hair, it’s probably because you are washing your hair too often! I constantly encourage people to cut back a little on the frequency of washing their hair. The reason behind this is that excessive shampooing can actually remove the natural oils that are necessary for your hair’s strength. This becomes especially damaging when blow-drying. As beach season is upon us, you are not wrong for wanting to wash that sand and chlorine out of your hair, however instead of applying shampoo, I recommend rinsing the hair in the shower with a scalp massage. This revitalises the cells and exfoliates them. With increased circulation, you are promoting hair growth. 3. Avoid Blow Drying People who suffer from dandruff or a dry scalp usually expose their hair to the strong heat of a blow dryer. I encourage clients to allow their hair to rest without the blasts of strong heat that come out of a blow dryer. Excessive blowouts cause the scalp to dry out and without the natural moisture that the oils provide, the scalp, which is essentially the skin on your head, becomes flaky, just as skin anywhere else would.

Lahori Karahi & Charga the world’s most famous Indian Restaurant.

The Darbar however never saw light of day, and after years of renovations and name changes, Stockport’s popular Lahori Karahi & Charga has now found its second home in the former pub in Bradford. The new refurbished building, with beautifully erected glass windows and carefully chosen furniture, reminds you of some of the top restaurants in India and Pakistan. At first I was a little sceptical about eating in. The Bradford branch had been riddled with a bad reputation after several attempts to open up as a restaurant in previous years.

So who prepares the best curries, the North or the South of England? A question often debated, but for me it has to be the North and you will all believe me when you visit Lahori Karahi and Charga. There are two branches one in Stockport and one in Bradford. For my review I visited the Bradford branch.

The Bradford branch of Lahori Karahi & Charga was previously a popular pub known as The Shearbridge. Conveniently located close to the University and College, many students and locals had fond memories of enjoying a drink and a good social in the wellknown pub. Sadly the 90’s saw a decline in pub trade and The Shearbridge too like many couldn’t sustain itself and had to close down. Following the closure, the new owners made headlines as large banners were draped across the building announcing the opening of Darbar touted as

The décor, especially the traditional Asian farming wheel and tools aligned on the exterior wall of the building and little hut made to the side of the building, with beautiful wooden decking, to enjoy that nice cup of tea and hot samosas whether it’s a hot summers day or a cold winters day with a nice fire burning outside, the location is most definitely comfortable and well renovated. Anyway, coming to the most important part. The food. So what’s different about this curry house compared to the rest? The name of the restaurant gives this away. Lahori Karahi and Charga are renowned for famous Lahori dishes, both the Charga and Karahi being some of them. So naturally for starters we ordered the charga!

Charga apparently is another name for chicken in Urdu. Charga is widely found in restaurants in Lahore, Pakistan. The speciality of this starter is that it comes as a whole chicken, which has been marinated in lahori style herbs and spices and then steamed and finally fried. I went into the kitchen to see the process and was amazed at the huge steamer brought in especially from Pakistan in which the chickens are steamed and then fried lightly to give it that beautiful crispy coating. Succulent, tender with all the right spices now we know why their famous for it – absolutely delicious. Although if you’re a light eater, you may not have room left later for mains so I wouldn’t really recommend eating a whole chicken for starters. If you truly enjoy lahori cuisine then you surely are in for a treat as the menu serves all the usual lahori favourites such as nihari, hareesa, chinioti kunna gosht, haleem and to my surprise hiran too. hiran is the Urdu term for deer. For those who like their venison and curry, the hiran karahi seems like the perfect dish. Also on the menu is a large selection of Indo Chinese dishes. Everything from manchurian, stir

fry’s, to szechuan. Children haven’t been forgotten either with a kids selection too. As is usual when you’re a foodie like me you’re spoilt for choice, so we asked our waiter what he would suggest. Being a group of eight the waiter recommended the karahi dishes as they could be shared around and enjoyed as a group. So we decided upon the Fresh lamb karahi in lahori style and the fresh chicken chilli Karahi. Cooked and served in the Karahi as you order. I did find it rather unusual to order our food by the kilo. Our knowledgeable waiter told us this was because the dishes are cooked from scratch, and so prepared as you would if you were cooking at home. That was evident as it took around 30 minutes for our food to arrive. However, it was definitely worth the wait. The dishes arrived sizzling and piping hot. The chicken and meat karahi dishes both came in the same karahi’s (thick, circular, and deep cooking-pot) they were cooked in. This I was told was so the dish maintains its heat and flavours. If you’re picky on presentation then my advice would be that on this occasion ignore the untidy edges of the karahi because once that

first morsel of lamb Karahi enters your mouth you’re taste buds will so pleased it will make up for the presentation. The lamb was cooked just right,

not overly oily as some karahi dishes tend to be. With delicious fresh spices as you would if you cooked at home and truly melts into your mouth. I could quiet easily over eat with this dish. The chicken dish did not disappoint either. Rightly spiced with good dose of ginger, garlic, spices and coriander. Not over powering, right temperature and once again full of flavour and amazing taste. Both dishes were complimented with a choice of roti’s and naan breads. What’s good about Lahori Karahi and Charga is that everything served is cooked as you order and the wait is most certainly worth it. We ordered a kilo each of the meat and chicken karahi dishes, charga, drinks for eight of us the bill came to a total of around £80.00, costing us around £10 per head. Not bad for a night out. On the whole, if you enjoy your curry, you will definitely keep coming back to this place for traditional lahori cuisine. The Bradford branch is a 300 seater restaurant and is open 7 days a week from 12pm till 12am Party bookings and outdoor catering is welcome.

This year’s Ramadan will mean longer fasts and when you can’t eat or drink all day, you end up spending the whole day thinking about eating and drinking…such is life! So if you’re thinking about it but can’t do it, what’s the next best thing? Making it, of course!

We all know during these long 19 hour fasts how important Suhoor (also called Sehur, Sehri,suhur, Sahari and Sahur) meals are for those observing their fasts. Suhoor is an Islamic term referring to the meal consumed early in the morning by Muslims before fasting, before sun down during the Islamic month of Ramadan. Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink anything from Suhoor till Iftar (when the sun sets)

Bagels and Bananas Ingredients 2 tablespoons of a natural nut butter, such as almond, cashew or peanut 1 teaspoon organic honey (acacia honey is a favourite)

Preparation method 1. Stir together the nut butter, honey and salt in a small bowl. 2. Divide the mixture between warm bagel halves and top with banana slices.

Pinch of salt 1 whole-wheat bagel, split and toasted 1 small banana, sliced

So here we’ve prepared some quick 10 minute healthy yet delicious suhoor recipes for you to enjoy during the month of Ramadhan.

Tip: Sprinkle almond slivers on top for crunch

Prawn Biryani, also known as Jinga/ Rice Biryani Ingredients

6 tbls Oil

1 Kg Prawns, shrimps or Rock Lobster (Retain some shells from the prawns.) 2 cups Rice 2 green chillies

2 tblsp Ghee 1 tsp Jeero (cumin) 1 Bunch of dhaniya Leaves (coriander) ½ tsp Turmeric 1 tsp red chillies

1 tsp Garlic (pounded)

¼ sour milk (yoghurt)

2 tsp Garlic slivered

½ cup Tomato (Juice)

2 Onions Juice of 1 Lemon 1 tsp Salt

1 piece Taj ( cinnamon) 2 elachi (Cardamom)

Preparation method 1. Shell the seafood and then 5. Pound dhaniya leaves fry braise in a tablespoon of oil slivered garlic and jeero then until salmon pink in colour. add to prawns. 2. Add mint and coriander leaves and set aside to cool. Once cooled, blend all this in a blender till the mixture becomes finely grinded. 5. Add ghee and oil to a frying pan, when heated add cloves, cardamon and cinnamon. Fry till brown.

Young Asian Brings Diversity To Cinema With New Horror Flick by Ninder Kaur In recent months there has been much discussion of the lack of diversity in British media with many big industry names joining the call for the inclusion and promotion of BAME (Black and Minority Ethnicity) talent particularly in cinema and television. With the help of an Ealing father and son team, they have helped conquer the absence of ethnic minority talent in their new movie Unhallowed Ground. The new independent supernaturalthriller-horror will soon be hitting the big screen this month. I caught up with the talented 22-year-old Paul Raschid, best known for his role in Ealing Comedy (2008) and Naachle London (2012), who not only has a starring role in the movie but also wrote this fullyfledged feature film. 1. Why did you decide do write a teen horror movie? Horror and thrillers has always been something that I have loved ever since I was little, where I would stay up late and watch them behind my parent’s back. From a business point of view, my dad who is an independent film producer went to go see his distributor to see what the demand was out there. They advised him that for a low budget film, the genre that you can make well and that will always have a loyal fan base is

the horror genre. I had just started off screen writing so when my Dad came back to me and asked if I could write a horror film I was more than happy to do so. 2. Was there any particular film you got inspiration from? My main influence was Scream. That period in the 90s there was a golden era in Hollywood of teen slasher thrillers. It has always been a genre that has really excited me. But it’s truly been a lifetime’s mental stockpiling of influences that shaped the script of ‘Unhallowed Ground’. Primarily, I wanted to write a horror film with believable characters so that the audience would care whether the people on screen lived or died. By having an emotional attachment to the characters makes every scare or moment of tension that bit more intense. 3. How did you go about writing the script? I prefer to draft my work and write as I go. From there, I just re-work and restructure the body of the work. It took me four weeks to write a draft copy of the movie and that was after sitting in my room like a vampire and working non-stop. Then it was just re-tweaking it all for the real first draft. In total, it took about six weeks to write. 4. How long have you been in the film industry?

I have always been involved in the industry because of my dad. I have even had parts in two of his films that he has directed. When I was 16, Dad would give me scripts for a second opinion and I came across some good ones and bad ones, which were equally educational when it came to knowing how to structure them and learn about character arcs. I have always learnt on the go rather than being formally trained. When I was 19, on holiday in Canada I just had an idea for a film and opened up my laptop and it went from there. 5. What has the film’s response been like? Considering it is a low budget indie film, I feel the support we’ve received has been great. I think what attracts people is the freshness of the project, by having a young, diverse cast and it being a fast-paced, suspenseful film. Plus, there is a great demand for horror films and the fan base is very loyal.

The film has already won ‘Best Horror Film’ at the London Independent Film Festival 2015, while two of its stars also picked up gongs at the British Independent Film Festival 2015. Marcus Griffiths won ‘Best Supporting Actor’ award and Rachel Petladwala was voted ‘Best Supporting Actress’.

The reviews have been really positive. We had a screening in Cannes and a lot of people came and watched it. It was great to get the approval from such educated film viewers with respected views, which is a good start and vindicated that I was on the right path.

Unhallowed Ground will be released on selected screens across the UK on 12th June 2015, where people can expect some great British acting talent, new and old. As well as a real adrenalin pumping ride filled with lots of jumps and scares.

Nargis, who was born in New York, made her Bollywood debut opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar and was most recently seen in Main Tera Hero with Varun Dhawan. The 35-year-old star recently flew into London to walk the red carpet at the European premiere of Spy, held at Leicester Square, and caught up with Asian Sunday ahead of her big night. You have flown in from Kenya. What were you doing there? Oh My God, I was saving rhinos (Rhinoceros). There is only one left. It was at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Nanyuki, Kenya. He’s the last male northern white rhino in the world. Can you imagine that there will be no more once he dies? There used to be twenty-thousand from the 1960s and now there is only one left. I was there to raise awareness because people should visit the place because it’s an once-in-a-lifetime experience. I was also trying to get people to donate as they’re trying IVF and it’s very costly. The last time you were in London to promote a movie was for Rockstar (2011). How has it been so far? Wow, that was such a long time ago. I love London and it’s always nice to be here, especially when the weather is nice. It’s really close to Mumbai too as it’s only eight-hours on a flight compared to sixteen-hours to New York or even twenty-four-hours to Los Angeles. You are represented by CAA KWAN in India, formerly known as KWAN, who joined hands with CAA, one of Hollywood’s top talent agencies, a few years ago. Did ‘Spy’ happen through that association? No, my agent in London DAA were handling everything in relation to Spy. I actually met Paul Feig, the director, in LA a while back. It was quite surprising that he knew about Bollywood and Indian cinema. He knew about the work that I had done. We were having a meal when he mentioned to me that he will be starting a movie and there is a role

that he felt I was perfect for. He asked me whether I would have time for it. I said yes immediately. Were you worried about how much screen time you’ll get in your debut Hollywood movie? I have realised that Hollywood and Bollywood are very separate things. They don’t get each other. They have a different way of doing things. I was born in New York City and was exposed to American cinema from a young age. I have friends who are actors, writers and entertainers. I know how hard it is to get into the industry. It’s super hard. You have talented people struggling for years. Yes, same goes for Bollywood but you don’t get judged for having small part in a film in Hollywood. You can have a really small role in one film and be the leading actor in your next. It doesn’t work the same way in Bollywood. If you do a supporting role, you get pigeonholed and only end up doing that. In Bollywood you have to work with the big guys and that’s it. You can’t work with anyone else. I understand that but getting offered this part in Spy with this amazing director and cast was a no brainer. It doesn’t matter how many minutes I’m on-screen or how big the role is, this is a big deal. Was the experience more comfortable for you, compared to working in Hindi movies, because English is your first language? It was but the sense of humour culturally is very different in India. I get the American sense of humour and even the British one. In Main Tera Hero, we have a scene where Varun sings a bhajan (devotional song) to the beat of Ranbir’s Badtameez Dil. I just didn’t get that (laughs). I really questioned everyone and asked how this is funny? Anupam Kher explained it to and had to associate it with something that I would understand. Then I said, “Oh, that’s funny”. With me, it’s sometimes lost in translation in Bollywood. I literally translate everything and I don’t get the jokes. Then someone has to explain it to me. I am the poor person that has the delayed reaction to a joke (laughs). There is a major action sequence in the film between you and Melissa McCarty. Did you have to prepare a lot? I had three days of choreography and quite some time over the day going over everything. There were still issues when we filmed it. I hurt myself a few times and Mellisa hurt me a couple of times too. But it turned out alright in the end. Spy, released by 20th Century Fox, is in UK cinemas now.

DiCaprio sues magazine over baby claims with Rihanna Actor Leonardo DiCaprio has filed a lawsuit against a French magazine which claimed he was having a baby with singer Rihanna. The 40-year-old actor has sued Oops! magazine for its May 28 cover story, which also said that the “Inception” actor would not recognise the baby as his, reports tmz.com. DiCaprio’s lawyer has called the story “pure fantasy”. He is apparently demanding over $20,000 in damages and attorney fees. The amount is the maximum allowed under the French law. According to sources, DiCaprio’s team contacted Oops! and informed the people running the magazine that the story was false. The magazine reportedly responded that they don’t care. DiCaprio and Rihanna, 27, first sparked dating rumours when they attended a birthday bash together in February this year. They were seen together at other parties too. However, the actor dismissed the rumour in March.

PBN by Ninder Kaur He has had over a decade’s worth of success in the music industry and has brought us some of the biggest dancefloor anthems to ever hit the bhangra scene. He is a producer, singer, songwriter, mentor and what he likes to call an all rounded ‘music artist’. It’s been a year since his last release but PBN and his team are back with their latest single, ‘Jatti Nachdi’, which features new female addition Serena. I caught up with the ‘Hitmaker’ to talk about his latest single, Team PBN and what we can expect from him this year. Tell us about the new single? The single is a feel good Bhangra track about a girl dancing which now features all four members of Team PBN. Its music that the fans

want and hopefully it will be big this summer. It was in June 2014 that we released our last Team PBN single. We have been away for a while doing non-stop gigs in Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Europe, India, and all over. It’s a signature PBN track that features my recently signed artist Serena. Rather than chucking her in the deep end on her own track, I wanted her to have a little feature on the single. Who are Team PBN? The collective consists of myself, Raj Bains, Bambi and the recently signed Serena. We all bring our own individual styles and sounds to the group, which is what makes us so unique. Raj Bains is a more traditional Punjabi folk singer, Bambi is a more commercial soulful artist and Serena brings the soulful Hindi pop sound. I started Team PBN in May 2013 with the single ‘Superstar’. I thought the industry needed something new and a lot of people

were talking about how we should support new Brit-Asian artists so I decided to do it. How is it being part of a team and creating Team PBN? It is a learning curve because I have gone from being a solo artist to having to manage and mentor these guys. We have had 4 singles and 4 number ones. We have headlined nearly every main stage, internationally. I have seen them grow into actual artists and performers. Not only that, but I have managed to bring in another female into the much needed Asian music scene. What has Jatti Nachdi’s response been like? The fans have been great. The single has only been out two weeks and already it is receiving a huge response. It’s exploding all over Twitter and fans are already calling it the big dancefloor hit for this summer.

Who are you musical influences? Everybody around me- even people on the street inspire me. Music artists I look up to are Punjabi MC, Partners in Rhyme, Bally Sagoo. Also, the big time bands including Heera, Alaap, Premi, Apna Sangeet and obviously the legend Gurdas Maan. Would you want to pursue any other music genre? I listen to mainstream music like RnB, Hip Hop and even Bollywood and Hindi music. Everybody wants these dancefloor bangers from me and I love making them. This year now, I want to be more experimental in terms of music genres. One thing I am working on right now is a Bhangra RnB track, where the production is all RnB, I will be singing in Punjabi and it will also feature a rapper. I know that Serena wants to do Hindi song with Punjabi lyrics

where the production would be more of a Bollywood style. Raj Bains has said that he wants to do romantic/sad songs. Also, I am looking to do a collaboration with a mainstream Reggae artist and I am hoping that that pulls through. But for now, it will be Bhangra because that what the fans want. You have had so much success in the industry, what is your secret? There is no secret. There’s a saying in the Sikh faith to always stay grounded. If someone gives me one second, I try and give two seconds back. I always get excited when it comes to releasing and composing music and as long as the excitement is there and the creative juices are flowing then I will continue to do what I do. What has been the most difficult part of the music industry that you have had to face? Starting out has been the hardest. I have climbed the ladder step-by-step and it’s taken me a decade to get to where I am. My new artists are very lucky. They have had everything on a plate. I was already established, I produced composed, invested every penny into them and took them onto a big stage. They didn’t have to do local park performances or bar performances. That wasn’t there for me; I had to be the smallest text or picture on a flyer. The hardship was climbing the ladder but its been

so rewarding and now I am the huge guy on the poster. If it weren’t for the hardship I wouldn’t respect where I am today. The most difficult thing was actually making a name and getting a fan base to actually continuously support you. Where would you like to see the Bhangra industry in 5 years time? Thriving, because India right now, they are killing us in terms of music, videos, singers and their swag. There are still so many guys in England that are flying the flag here like Jaz Dhami, Jazzy B and Dr.Zeus but I want that boom back that was there in 2009. There were so many artists that were on it and delivering. What’s next from you and your team? I’m going to reach out to the fans. I don’t know whether to do a Team PBN album or an actual PBN album and go back to my Homegrown days and feature Team PBN as well having some exclusive collaborations on there. For now, the next single ‘Thori Thori’ will be out at the end of June and will have lead vocals from Raj Bains. The forthcoming single is on par with my first ever release 10 years ago ‘Aaj Main Peeni’, so that’s something to look forward to!

Yes, I love communicating with my fans over Twitter. I like getting feedback about what people like and dislike about my work. My favourite part about social media is that they have direct access to me and vice versa. I really appreciate everything they write to me and it puts a smile to my face every day. It’s also a great medium to get your work out there. Internet has become such a major part of everyone’s life and digital marketing is huge now. I remember, the brand for my first advertisement didn’t have budgets for TV spots and we decided to only release it digitally. That opened up my eyes because it did really well and the reach was enormous. That gave me the belief that social media is important to promote your work as well as for interactions with fans. Your Dubsmash videos are pretty amazing too… (Laughs) We were doing interviews with a TV channel and they suggested that I should do one. A lot of people had sent me their ‘dubsmashes’ and I thought why not? I tried it and I really liked it. I did one with Priyanka and one from an old Anil Kapoor movie. These things amuse me more than anyone else (laughs). But I’m glad that other people enjoy them too. I do them for my own enjoyment though, in all honesty. It gives me a kick. You play a typical Punjabi character in the film. You are Sindhi but are quite Punjabi in nature. It wasn’t very hard then to portray the role, or was it?

I am Sindhi and there is a little bit of Sikh in me as well. My paternal grandmother was a Muslim so I’m a little bit of a mix. My family came from Karachi, they were based there. It was actually very easy to get into the character unlike the current movie that I’m filming for, Bajirao Mastani with Deepika and Priyanka. It’s a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie and I had to lock myself up for three weeks in a hotel room to work on my voice, body language, appearance and everything really. That was a big process but getting into Kabir Mehra’s character was pretty straightforward. He comes from a business family like I do, he was raised and comes from an urban area and is in the same age group as me. The character is demographically and socio-economically very similar to me. I noticed, while dubbing for the movie, that Dil Dhadakne Do is the closest to who I am compared to any other characters that I’ve played in the past.

You have changed tremendously from the time you made your acting debut with Anushka. Did she notice the changes?

that you are working with Anushka Sharma again…

You are a big Anil Kapoor fan and it’s quite apparent from the promos that you enjoyed every moment of working with him… Yes, I’m glad you noticed (laughs). That applies to off-screen too as he’s such a great guy. He’s warm, hilarious and genuine. He doesn’t give you the ‘senior’ vibe and it’s more like acting with a ‘bro’. I had

the great opportunity of working with another childhood idol of mine from the 90’s, Govinda, in Kill Dil. It was different because it felt like he was my senior and I would just listen to his stories and learn from his experiences. That was fun but with Anil it’s different. We work out together and we really bonded during the making of the film. There is quite a lot of buzz

Well, Anushka is an absolutely stunning actress. Above all and beyond everything, I have tremendous respect for her talent and acting abilities. She’s the best part of most of the movies that she’s been in. She really made a mark with NH10 as an actor and producer. I was very happy and excited that I have such a solid co-actor to work with. I was actually pleasantly surprised that Anushka will portray the role. I never thought that she would take on such a role. But this shows us exactly how secure she is as an actress to make these choices as it’s an ensemble film. I was over the moon when she signed the film and had a blast catching up with her. I did two movies with her back-toback at the start of my career. We lost touch after that but it was good catching up with her while working on Dil Dhadakne Do. She makes acting very easy for her co-stars so that was great.

Well, I was trying to make it a pleasurable experience for her to shoot with me for this film. That is because I know what a pain in the #@#@ I was in my first and second film. I had all these questions and I was overenthusiastic. I had to be guided at every step and that can be quite a painful process. She was trying to get her job done but also had to deal with this novice rookie actor. I can’t imagine that to be a pleasurable experience but she was kind and nice to me. This time I made sure that I could be the best co-actor for Anushka. I even asked her that a few times whether I have become better now and if I am less of a pain now (laughs). In Gunday, you and Priyanka Chopra played lovers, in Dil Dhadakne Do you portray siblings and in your next, Bajirao Mastani you play a married couple. Isn’t that a bit weird? It’s weird. I’m not going to lie. It’s a bit of a dysfunctional relationship that we share. She has pretty much played my girlfriend, my sister and wife back-to-back in the span of a year-and-a-half. It’s weird but also testimony to the fact that Priyanka is a very competent actor. She can fit into any mould. It’s weird when you say it like that (laughs) but Priyanka is really professional. We trust our directors and we hope our audiences have evolved to accept two actors playing different characters for different movies. How was it like filming all over Europe and on a cruise for most of the film? It was like a paid holiday (laughs). There was not much work. It was pretty much just having a conversation whether it was a bar, on a couch, in a room or on a bus. It’s not like Bajirao Mastani which is emotionally and physically draining. As it was an ensemble cast, I would have two days off every week and I would find a new place to go to every time. It really felt like a holiday. I don’t think any other shooting experience will match up to this. Dil Dhadakne Do is now in UK cinemas nationwide.

Bend It Like Beckham Scores Its Way To The West End The multiple awardwinning movie has been brought to London’s West End. Bend It Like Beckham: The Musical will be take place at the Phoenix Theatre in London, and will be taking bookings right through to the 24th October 2015. Adapted by Gurinder Chadha and Paul Mayeda Berges from the 2002 smash hit film of the same name, Bend it Like Beckham: The Musical follows Jess, a talented young football player torn between following in the footsteps of her hero David Beckham, or living up to family expectations of university, career and marriage. Featuring an original score with a Punjabi kick, it brings a unique cultural fusion of musical theatre to the stage for the first time. This reimagining of the much-loved hit film sees generations, cultures and communities brought together in this joyous and uplifting story about bending the rules and scoring that deciding goal. Scored by Howard Goodall (Love Story, The Hired Man) with the collaboration of pioneer of the British Bhangra sound, composer and performer Kuljit Bhamra and lyrics by Charles Hart (Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Love Never Dies), the music of Bend It Like Beckham is an East-West fusion of Bhangra and soaring joyous

A House of Hidden Mothers - A tale of love, life and surrogacy Meera Syal CBE is an author, actress, comedian and an impressive three decades into her career. Syal is already one of the most acclaimed actors and writers of stage and screen, and has already achieved great success with scripts, TV shows and novels. Syal’s latest and much anticipated release arrives nearly 16 years after her last book, Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee. The House of Hidden Mothers is Meera Syal’s long-awaited third novel.

The new novel tells the story of two women. Shyama, aged forty-four and from East London, has fallen for a youthful Englishman. They want a

When Shyama and Mala meet, they help each other realise their dreams The novel discusses topical issues facing the Asian community. It explores India as the surrogacy capital of the world and asks vital questions about identity, family, and the right to conceive. With many ‘late-mothers’ returning to India in search of surrogates, there are now roughly 3,000 clinics that provide in vitro fertilisation in India. Every year, the country sees anywhere from 100 to 300 surrogate pregnancies, making it the surrogacy capital of the world. Taking on such a sensitive topic is not easy, but Syal’s powerful novel is underpinned by female friendship, motherhood and love. This beautifully descriptive novel has allowed Syal to connect to her

British Asian audience through her compelling storytelling. Readers will immediately connect with Shyama’s perception of Modern India, as Syal takes the reader on an emotional journey. Author Meera Syal comments: “Surrogacy is a sensitive topic but one I was keen to tackle because I was fascinated by it. My favourite book – The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, focuses on outsourcing fertility and I’d also once seen a documentary on the popularity of surrogacy in India, which was incredibly moving. Poets Corner Welcome to Poets Corner. Asian Sunday want to re-introduce our readers to the world of poetry. This edition we are sharing popular poem “Where the Mind is Without Fear” by famous Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861 – 1941) As well as a poet Tagore was a philosopher, artist, playwright, composer and novelist. India’s first Nobel laureate, Tagore won the 1913 Nobel Prize for Literature. He composed the text of both India’s and Bangladesh’s respective national anthems. Tagore travelled widely and was friends with many notable 20th century figures such as William Butler Yeats, H.G. Wells, Ezra Pound, and Albert Einstein. The poem, “Where the mind is without fear” was written by Rabindranath Tagore during the time when India was under the British Rule and people were eagerly waiting to get their freedom from the British Rule. This poem had given a lot of strength to the people who were struggling for India’s independence. It is a prayer to the Almighty for a hassle free nation free from any kind of manipulative or corrupted powers. In contrast when we look around us today, this poem is apt for the millions across the globe who are still fighting for freedom.

by Aalia Khan Having been to various destinations all over the world, including; Malaysia, Istanbul, Florida, Portugal, Venice, Egypt and Paris, I always get drawn back to Dubai. I have become accustomed to the sun, sea, sand, scenic views, relaxing lifestyle and the hospitality which is second to none. Not to mention the beautiful aroma of the UAE fragrances of Oud and Bahour, to mention just two. I am so smitten, that I truly believe it would be extremely difficult for any other destination to replicate all this and come anywhere

near to becoming my no.1 destination. Recalling back my first ever trip to Dubai, it was not a pleasant one. I had stayed in the old part of Dubai, which is nothing like the modern chic Dubai that I have become accustomed to. That trip did not entice me to return, to the contrary, I wouldn’t have chosen it ever again. However, my father who also loves Dubai convinced me to return on my second trip, which ended up being one of my best ever holidays. This second trip, which was a treat for my 18th birthday, was my introduction to the Palm Jumeirah where we stayed at the Atlantis hotel on the tip of the palm itself, several km

away from the mainland. Both the Atlantis and the nearby Jumeriah Beach hotel (JBH) which are separated geographically only by the amazing Burj Ul Arab (the only 7 Star hotel in the world, at its time of construction) are five star hotels with unimaginable luxuries. Our trip was divided between the Atlantis and the JBH, both of which created an unforgettable experience and lasting memory for me. Both the hotels come with their own water parks, which are accessible for the duration of your stay free for all the guests. The Wild Wadi water park is at the JBH and the Aqua Venture adjacent to the Atlantis. They also have

great restaurants giving you amazing dining experiences within the hotels, as well as shops, easy access to their own private beach, gymnasium and spa facilities, not to mention the fantastic pools and many family friendly activities too. After this second trip to Dubai, (which many folks like me, think is a country, but it’s one of the Emirates that forms the UAE or the United Arab Emirates) it became my natural annual holiday destination and each time I discovered something new. A few trips later, after raving about it to my friends and relatives, I went with a few of my family members, when

we stayed at the Oasis Beach Tower Hotel on the Jumeriah Beach Residence walk (JBR). The Oasis Beach, is a tower of serviced apartments, perfect for groups, families and couples alike, as it has restaurants, two pools, an amazing spa and gymnasium, which follows the theme of most of the lavishly finished, both boutique modern and traditional style hotels. I was surprised I hadn’t come to the JBR walk a lot sooner as it is one of the most vibrant and multicultural influenced areas with restaurants from all over the globe, catering for every taste, also showcasing new multi screen cinema as well as a large public beach too. on the walk is electrifying, with tourists’ from all over the world, as well as UAE nationals, enjoying the fantastic restaurants, the beach, ice cream parlours and the beautiful views. The walk is a hive of activity all day and night well into the early hours. So regardless of what time you feel like having a meaty burger or a healthy salad, your taste buds will certainly be catered for, in many cases 24/7.

The JBR walk is constantly changing, every year that I visit I always discover something new, such as; the open air cinema, the running track along the beach for the fitness fanatics, as well as outdoor gym facilities, shopping plazas with many new shops opening up and several beach photo stands, so you never miss out on a selfie, which you can immediately email to yourself, friends or family without using your own device. I’m pretty sure I’ll see many more new treasures on my next trip. Since the walk became one of my favourites, on my last trip we stayed at the Amwaj Rotana on the walk. Another fantastic hotel, the Amwaj Rotana is spacious, beautifully decorated, homely, and welcoming from the moment you step in. The staff is amazingly friendly and their attentiveness instantly ensures that the tone is set for a brilliant holiday. This hotel also offers a full range of facilities, and as a contrast to the others despite being on the walk it is set back a little from the beach away from the hustle and bustle. The Dancing Fountain at the Dubai Mall is a must see attraction when in Dubai; the fountain performs in sync daily to a variety of music from Arabic and English to Bollywood. When watching the fountain you can see the iconic Burj Khalifa in the background providing an amazing photo opportunity and videos and certainly

leaves you in awe.

For those of you who are shisha lovers the Dubai Marina is a must visit, with great restaurants along the stretch where you are sure to find a place to put your feet up and enjoy a good Hubbly Bubbly as it’s called in many parts of the world. There are also many restaurants, cafes, the Marina Mall and great scenic views to delve into at the marina where you can also hop on to a boat or extravagant yacht with crew for a relaxing boat cruise or a lavish bank busting day out if you wish. That’s why Dubai is a place where you can have every dream fulfilled at a cost.

Saurav Dutt Sheds Light on Cultural Taboos with the release of his new novel “The Butterfly Room” by Ninder Kaur Following the success of the BBC’s “India’s Daughter” documentary in March, Saurav Dutt has released a new novel that helps to spread awareness of domestic violence and abuse in Indian and Asian culture. In the novel “The Butterfly Room”, the British Indian author deals with the complexities of a dysfunctional Indian family in the United Kingdom which highlights two topical-and highly taboo-issues in the Asian community: that of domestic violence against women and LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender) rights. “In light of the explosive ‘India’s Daughter’ documentary, it is more relevant than ever to explore certain trenchant and deeply rooted cultural taboos within Indian and Asian societies,” said Dutt. “The issues of women’s rights, domestic violence, and abuse, as well as homophobia and LGBTI discrimination are not isolated to South Asia or India, and that is why I wanted to explore them in this book.”

To compile the novel, Dutt interviewed survivors and their families who were impacted by abuse and discrimination. Their personal stories are at the heart of the novel, as the author seeks to shed some light on these cultural taboos. Following the sale of Dutt’s last novel, “Broken Sky,” Dutt donated proceeds to a variety of worthy causes benefitting stroke, homeless, and brain

injury awareness charities. This time, proceeds from the sale of “The Butterfly Room” will benefit a number of charities that offer assistance to survivors and victims of homophobia, LGBTI discrimination, and domestic violence and abuse. One of the charities includes Refuge, the UK’s largest provider of specialist domestic violence services, as well as Southall

Black Sisters, Women’s Aid, Stonewall UK, and Amnesty International. “I feel it is important to give back and help raise awareness of these vital, concurrent issues, and to work in hand with charities to do so,” added Dutt. In addition to his in-depth research working alongside survivors and victims, Dutt credits the Joyful Heart Foundation’s ‘No More’ campaign as a source of inspiration for the novel’s philanthropic endeavour. by Ayyaz Malik Columbian striker Carlos Bacca scored twice to help Sevilla overcome the spirited challenge of Dnipro- and win the UEFA Europa League for a record breaking fourth time in ten years. The Spanish side who won this tournament when it was called the UEFA cup in 2007 and 2008, were looking to become the first side to win the newly named Europa League in consecutive seasons. In their way were Ukrainian side Dnipro. The Ukrainian side may not be known by many - but

performances from players like their goalkeeper Boyko and Konoplyanka (who has been linked with Liverpool amongst others) many football observers will do so now. Due to the performance of Boyko Dnipro came into this final with the best defence and Sevilla who boast of Columbian Carlos Bacca in their ranks, the best attack. Due to Sevilla having the more experience it seemed that the Spanish side were favourites - but the match didn’t quite pan out like that. In a match (in my humble) that was one of the best finals

for a while, both sides gave it everything bar the old kitchen sink! This match was dubbed attack against defence - but to both sides credit they both attacked. In fact it was Dnipro who scored first inside ten minutes after a lovely worked move down the Sevilla left hand side, which allowed Alex Kalinic to easily head home to send the Ukrainian’s fans into raptures. After that point the Ukrainian side were guilty of defending and dropping further deep - and paid the price as Krychowiak equalised after drilling home from a corner.

Boom Bacca Lacca Buoyed by that goal Sevilla as defending champions looked like they were starting to take control - and the Spanish side went ahead for the first time on the night through Carlos Bacca. Bacca who had threatened to score before this goal latched on to a brilliant through ball - and expertly rounded Boyko in the Dnipro goal to slot into an empty net.

It was always going to be hard to keep the final up to such a standard, in fact four goals haven’t been scored in the first half of a final ever since Liverpool beat Spanish side Alaves back in the early noughties. Thankfully for Sevilla they had that little bit more in terms of fire power - and it was that man again Bacca who provided that moment of magic.

Many might have thought that would lead to Dnipro’s capitulation - but impressively the Ukrainian side equalised with a free kick from Ruslan Rotan, which Rico Gonzales couldn’t keep out.

King Khan Is King Of The Ring Amir Khan boosted hopes of a match with Floyd Mayweather with a commanding points victory over American Chris Algieri. Algieri who last time out was stopped by Philipinno legend Manny Pacqiuao, was always going to be a tough opponent for 28 year old Khan, who was very keen to tell us before this fight. Algieri who in front of his home crowd in New York did try to build some momentum in the fight - but Khan made sure he was in charge of this one. The judges scored this fight unanimously in the Bolton fighter’s favour with scores of 117-111,117-111 and 115-113. The win for the 28 year old Khan is now his fifth in a row after being stopped by Danny Garcia. After the fight Amir Khan again called out boxing great Floyd Mayweather for a fight. Mayweather who has been

undefeated throughout his career, has said that he wants to fight once more before retiring. The 38 year old from America has said that he wants to fight once more in September and Khan hopes that last fight will be with him. Any potential fight has been thrown into doubt due to the fact that Amir Khan who is a Muslim will be fasting then. Khan himself however has said that he will find a way to make it happen. Should a fight between Amir Khan and Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather happen then it would no doubt be the biggest of Khan’s career. Should Mayweather win his next fight, which many boxing observers hope to be against Khan, then the American would equal Rocky Marciano’s record 49 fights unbeaten in his career.

Whereas certain football matches are over before the final whistle let’s say, in the IPL though that so often isn’t the case. Last ball wins by hitting the winning runs or by getting the last wicket needed, the IPL is drama filled and action packed. They say great drama comes from the BBC? Sorry not when the IPL is on at least. Just like in any other sporting tournament the aim is to get to the final. The IPL is no different. The method of getting there is simple, the first four teams qualify for the semi-final after the round of group matches.

The IPL which is contested by eight teams annually over a six week period, sees teams from all over India compete against each other in the aim to be the best side in India. This year’s event saw Kolkata Knight Riders start this tournament as the defending champions. The Knight Riders who have coaches Wasim Akram and new England coach Trevor Bayliss, were seen by many as a team who could go on and successfully defend their title. Sadly though that wasn’t the case as Kolkata who have world class spinner Sunil Narine in their ranks as well as his very talented compatriot Andre Russell, were knocked out in the first round.

The tournament just like with any other T20 tournament has mainly captured the imagination of many fans due to the fact that any team can beat any team on the day. Add to that the Bollywood glamour of Indian actor of Shah Rukh Khan owning KKR as they’re also known, as well as Indian actresses Juhi Chawla and Priety Zinta owning teams or as they’re known franchises.

Just to make things nice and interesting the IPL semifinals format works like this. Whoever loses between first and second in the group plays the team who won out of the third and fourth place teams. To put it simply the team that loses in the match first against second has two chances to qualify for the final. The race for those four places couldn’t have been any tighter and more exciting in this year’s IPL. Six teams were vying to getting into the semi-final play offs. Defending champions KKR, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore. You don’t have to be a sports fanatic to know that six teams can’t qualify for four

qualifying spaces, so sadly two teams had two miss out. After weeks of changing league positions which saw KKR at one stage second and top of the table, KKR sadly were knocked out after losing to Rajasthan in a match that if either lost would have all but confirmed elimination. Elimination was confirmed for the defending champions after results didn’t go their way. The other casualty were the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Sunrisers who included David Warner who was the tournaments leading run scorer, fell short in a crunch game against Mumbai Indians. The Sunrisers were at one stage third in the table and seemed certain to qualify for the finals - but sadly Tom Moody’s side lost when they needed to win most.

Those two eliminations meant the final four were confirmed. Chennai, Mumbai, RCB and Rajasthan. Despite the six weeks of shocks and upsets, the final four were all strong sides. Mumbai had won the tournament in 2013, Chennai have been two time winners previously; RCB and Rajasthan have real match winners in their sides such as Chris Gayle and Shane Watson. I must add Rajasthan did win the first edition of IPL - but haven’t been in the semi-final mix up since. Mumbai were the first team into the final after they beat Chennai by 25 runs. Kieron Pollard and Lendl Simmonds played pivotal roles in helping the Indians get to 187 in their 20 overs. In reply Chennai always looked short and lost by 25 runs, which meant they awaited the winner of RCB and Rajasthan. With the chance of facing Chennai, both Rajasthan and RCB had a lot to play for - but it was RCB with

the power and craft of AB Devilliers who came out on top in this one. RCB managed to post 180 in their 20 overs. In reply Rajasthan Royals were well short and were eventually all out for 109.

That win meant for RCB meant Royal Challengers had the not so simple task of facing MS Dhoni’s Chennai side. So fluent in the eliminator, RCB struggled in the second qualifier and could only post 139. The run chase should have been easy - but Chennai did make it hard for themselves by edging this one by three wickets and one ball to spare. That win for Chennai meant it was a rematch of the 2013 final and a rematch of the game in the first qualifier. MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl on what seemed very batting friendly conditions. The decision which seemed strange did come back to haunt CSK as Mumbai despite losing a wicket in the first over managed to post 202-5. Key to this impressive total was Rohit Sharma who really did take the fight to the opposition. Valuable contributions from Lendl Simmonds who top scored with 68 and an 18 ball 36 from Simmonds’ compatriot Kieron Pollard were also key to such a daunting total. Knowing they needed to come out aggressive, CSK’s run chase never really gained momentum - and despite 57 from Dwayne Smith which was laboured in comparison to the Mumbai Indian batsmen, Chennai fell short again by 41 runs. For the Mumbai Indians this IPL title win sees them champions for the second time level with KKR and CSK. As for CSK this defeat sees them lose in their third final.

Elimination Chamber Was One To Eliminate From The Memory

by Ayyaz Malik Have you had that feeling? What feeling you might ask, the feeling of waiting for something only for it to be a big anti-climax? Well WWE’s elimination chamber was just that. Too predictable and the feeling of knowing what’s going to happen this wrestling fan isn’t impressed. Your probably thinking well isn’t that WWE in a nut shell? Err no it isn’t really… it isn’t. The matches were just too predictable. WWE has been really trying to champion the notion of giving WWE Diva’s a chance, that’s great - but it’s the same one (Paige) and it’s getting predictable. Paige Vs Nicki Bella in their gazillionth match is going to get boring, it was a good idea to start with - but it’s seriously getting to that stage where I am like please enough is enough. The match at Elimination chamber did include Naomi, which was a good thing - but I think it’s time to give another Diva a chance - and again I feel it was a bit too anti climatic seeing Nicki Bella win at Elimination chamber.

AJ Lee a three time Divas champion retiring isn’t ideal and has effected the competition - but please surely give someone else a chance in the locker room. I don’t know maybe try pushing someone like Sasha Banks from NXT into the main roster for the odd appearance. WWE is saying that they want to give WWE Divas chance so why not? Let’s get one thing clear Niki Bella is a great wrestler - but she needs more competition to keep her reign successful in accordance to the ongoing story line, well that’s what I think. Other matches included the Inter Continental title match, the tag team title match, John Cena and Kevin Owens, Neville and Bo Dallas; not to forget to mention the WWE world heavyweight title match between Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose.

I just wish that the script writers do utilise some of the talent that are fighting it out in the Intercontinental division of WWE. Here are examples of some potential matches that could really capture the imagination. Talking of capture the imagination, sadly another example on the night of WWE script writers falling to do so. Seth Rollins who won the WWE title at Wrestle mania has been in so many title matches with Dean Ambrose, again good idea to start with but in danger of ruining a good thing, especially since the two have previously had a feud.

Dean Ambrose had pinned the champion, or so he thought, J&J security’s interference during the fight eventually lead to a disqualification win for Dean Ambrose after some deliberation from the referee. The disqualification win for Ambrose still means Seth Rollins is the WWE champion. The ‘Lunatic Fringe’ though however wasn’t having any of it and left the arena with the WWE title. I just want to bring the conversation back to the need for NXT talent being in the WWE and to be fair to HHH and Stephanie McMahon they have involved a NXT superstar in the roster.

Maybe the angle of Ambrose having the rivalry with Rollins is fine - but please it’s difficult to get excited about a match if the same match has happened so many times before! Just like I said before maybe try to bring some wrestlers in from NXT to just spice things up a little.

by Ayyaz Malik Ever since he stepped foot on to a clay court 10 years before, Rafael Nadal has almost reached a level of tennis immortality at Roland Garros. One defeat in 10 years and nine grand slams in Paris kind of explains why I say that. Daunting you might think for the rest of the players who were gearing up for the French open. In life though anything is possible, after all as they say it depends on the day. The Spaniard Nadal in this particular French open is seen as underdog by many due to the injuries the 28 year old has suffered this year. To put things into perspective the former world number one has slipped to number seven in the world rankings - but as I have said on so many occasions form is temporary and class is permanent. In this temporary blip of form for Nadal there are a few players who will be no doubt looking to take advantage. Of course there will be the usual suspects Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Rodger Federer - but Stan Wawrinka is no mug with the racquet lets just say. All those players knowing the season Nadal has had ( one title win since winning French open last June) would have no doubt have been optimistic coming into the French open. Federer at the ripe old age of 33 is actually the only man to win the French open in the Nadal era. The other players

such as Djokovic and Murray have come close - but sadly have fallen short. The Serbian Djokovic lost to his Spanish rival in last years final and was hoping to get one over his old foe here at this years French open. In fact if both players ( Nadal and Djokovic) successfully come through their respective matches they would be on course to meet in the quarter finals. Just for good measure a resurgent Andy Murray would be possibly waiting in the semi-finals. The fact that the same four players meet in the semifinals more times than not is potentially damaging for the sport. Then again people will argue it’s not the players’ fault they are as good as they are. There are some players who are capable of breaking the monopoly of that top four however in this tournament . Players such as Stan Wawrinka and home favourite Jo Wilfred Tsonga come to mind. If you ever want to know of the concept of Jekyll and Hyde is real then look no further than Tsonga.

Djokovic is the world number one and has been playing some of the best tennis of his life. A win over Frenchman Richard Gascquet on the way to now facing Murray, suggested that the 28 year old Djokovic might have what it takes to add Roland Garros to his collection of grand slams. Not to do a disservice to the two competitors in the other half of the draw (Stan Wawrinka and Jo Wilfred Tsonga). Yes I did predict the Frenchman Tsonga would do well in this tournament - but I never would have thought he would have got to the semis. To be fair to Tsonga a win over Thomas Berdych on the way to the semi finals is an impressive feat.

Wawrinka on the other hand has been solid and although indeed I am surprised the 30 year old has got this far, at the same time maybe I shouldn’t be. The Swiss player who has been long in the shadow of his legendary compatriot Rodger Federer did indeed beat him in straight sets in the quarter finals to progress to the last four.

Sadly though that’s not how events unfolded however. In a tournament that has been very unpredictable, the two semifinal matches unfolded how I thought they would. Home favourite Jo Wilfred Tsonga was beaten by Stan Wawrinka in four sets and Andy Murray lost to Novak Djokovic. The match between Murray and Djokovic wasn’t as straightforward though. These two players who have competed in grand slam finals in recent years, renewed their rivalry in the semi’s - but their was a different and a rather an unusual twist with this one. Rain interrupted proceedings which forced play to be suspended and the conclusion of the match had to be concluded a day later than normal. That advantage favoured Murray initially as the Scot was 2-1 down in sets. Andy Murray was able to regroup and forced the semi-final into a deciding set. Murray must have been thinking at this point that the momentum was on his side but Djokovic had other ideas. Just like other matches these two great athletes have been involved in, Djokovic of late has managed to find a way to win - and the same proved here as the Serb won the deciding set 6-1. That deciding set win over Scotland’s Andy Murray meant that it would be Novak Djokovic and Stanislav Wawrinka in the French Open Final. Djokovic came into this final as the overwhelming favourite. last year that he was defeated in four sets by Rafa Nadal. Stan Wawrinka however is no pushover - and let’s not forget he did beat Rodger Federer on the way to the final at Roland Garros. Wawrinka lets not forget is a previous grand slam winner, the 31 year old beat Rafa Nadal at the 2014 Australian open. Novak Djokovic came into this match looking be one of only eight men to have won the (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open). After the first set which Djokovic won 6-4, it seemed at that point there was only going to be one winner in this final (Novak Djokovic) - but things started change very quickly. That first set loss seem to galvanise Wawrinka. In fact the 30 year old produced a near flawless performance from there on in. Renowned for his backhand, Stan Wawrinka produced some jaw dropping shots that Novak Djokovic had no answer to. In a position of supremacy (being a set up) the Serbian found himself 2-1 down in sets. The 28 year old did threaten a fight back just like he has done so many times over recent years - but Wawrinka wasn’t to be denied as the 30 year old Wawrinka fought back from 3-0 down in the fourth to win the set 6-4, and the match. That win for Wawrinka sees him become the champion at Roland Garros for the first time. Novak Djokovic on the other hand will have to wait another year at least to realise his dream of being French Open champion. With Wimbledon just a few weeks away there is no doubt both players will be turning attentions to SW19. Wimbledon starts on 29th June and will be ending on 12th July.
