PENINSULAR MALAYSIA – WEST

Peninsular Malaysia’s western region is rich in cultural and natural attractions. Kuala Lumpur has a multicultural populace rarely seen elsewhere on the planet. The cityscape is also diverse; the futuristic Petronas Twin Towers stand as a symbol of modern Malaysia near to the traditional enclaves of Chinatown and Little India.

For fresh air and forest treks, the Cameron Highlands, a former colonial hill station, offers a small slice of England, including manicured rose gardens, strawberry fields and mock Tudor mansions. World Heritage acclaimed George Town on Penang boasts exceptional architectural indulgence. PENINSULAR MALAYSIA – WEST

For adventures in the great outdoors, the Belum Temenggor Forest Reserve dates back over 130 million years – older than both the Amazon and the Congo rainforests. Spread over 3,000 sq-km, this pristine sanctuary is

home to Lake Tasik Temenggor which contains hundreds of tiny islands and plentiful plant and wildlife species that are unique to this location. For a step back in history, Malacca has retained much of its old-world charm and this can be seen in its 15th century streets containing ornate architecture, a legacy of this city’s former status as an affluent port on the East-West trade route.

Head to this outlet to enjoy one of the island’s greatest snacks, Penang kuih kapit. This is a traditional Malaysian treat that is popular during festive seasons, like Chinese New Year. It consists of a crispy, thin wafer or biscuit made from a batter of coconut milk, eggs, sugar and flour.

Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay $

Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay is a renowned establishment known for its traditional Peranakan desserts created from age-old family recipes. Visitors can enjoy these sweet treats with a cup of fragrant local tea or coffee, served in a venue in the heart of the island’s heritage district.

Gen Penang $$$$

Gēn is Chinese for ‘root’ and this word signifies the chef revisiting his culinary roots when producing modern day tasting menu masterpieces. A major theme is the use of the freshest, local produce. Hence, the options change regularly to reflect market availability and seasonality.

Jawi House $$

This restaurant was established by a family of Punjabi-Peranakan ancestry. This rich heritage has led to the creation of incredible Jawi Peranakan cuisine, known by Malays as ‘food for feasting’. This gastronomy dates back to the spice trading era when Malay women first used spices brought home by their Arab, Persian and Indian husbands.

PENANG RESTAURANTS

Nasi Dagang Pak Malau $

Enjoy dining at an eatery with a view of verdant rice fields, framed by a mountainous backdrop. Guests can eat underneath the thatched roof or at one of the al fresco tables set on the edge of the rice field. This serene setting is complemented by excellent cuisine, especially the house curries.

Mak Lang 1952 $$

Enjoy tradition with a twist! Breaking away from the usual laksa offering, Mak Lang 1952 has an impressive seven varieties of this dish on the menu. Overlooking the rolling green landscape of the 99 East Golf Club, the Fat Frog is focused on healthy eating with the freshest of ingredients. PENINSULAR MALAYSIA – EAST

Peninsular Malaysia’s eastern region offers a contrast to the more visited western seaboard – with stronger links to the country’s Malay heritage. Many visitors are attracted to this coastline’s beautiful islands, such as Tioman, a haven for snorkelling and hiking the jungle interior. Another paradise island is Redang. This is also blessed with white sands and an inner rainforest.

Away from the crowds, visitors will enjoy a solitary experience in Taman Negara, famed as the nation’s flagship national park and one

of the most ancient rainforests on Earth. This reserve is home to extensive flora and fauna, including over 14,000 recorded species of plants and trees, 200 species of mammals and 350 species of birds.
