Exclusive Interview

Airtravel Enterprises is well acknowledged by the travellers as a trustworthy travel support. And being the man at the helm E. M. Najeeb, Chairman and Managing Director of Airtravel Enterprises, charts out his evolution as an entrepreneur in an exclusive interview to ASIAN TRAVELLER.

THE VISIONARY ENTREPRENEUR Being the Key person behind ATE, what prompted you to venture into the industry? After my graduation and postgraduate professional course in 1976, I seriously contemplated about my future. I was convinced that my path should be entrepreneurship, leaving behind other options of getting into a job or going abroad. I decided to establish a business of my own, staying

back in my own place. Looking at the various options of business, I got convinced to choose travel, tours and leisure. 70’s was a period when the traffic to the Gulf countries for employment was booming. Passengers had no assistance or advice, and also those days they had to travel to Bombay to take a flight to the Gulf. Most of them were stressed as their visas were getting expired and not being able to obtain a flight booking. I felt that I could help them out, giving them proper guidance and obtaining tickets for them at reasonable prices. I ventured into formal business of travel, opening offices at important locations. I setup the travel company Air Travel Enterprises in 1976, and it gradually grew up spreading to other locations in the state and the country. The company in the course of time achieved many recognitions and

The Dream Merchants Raja Gopaal Iyer, CEO of Raj Hospitality, talks about his company, his dreams and his experiences in the hospitality industry. In an exclusive interview with Asian Traveller, he describes his company as the Dream Merchants. You have established a trademark in the Hospitality industry with your projects. Tell us more about your achievements in this position as the CEO of Raj Hospitality? There are always many who want to start their own business. But for me the responsibility increased to tenfold. There were only one or two who supported my decision but many surely thought and a few said I was taking a wrong decision, that too when I was at the peak of my career. Raj Hospitality Brand as such I can’t say it is established as I never took second property until recently in the last two years. La Classic is my Dream project which I had put my heart and soul after eight years of my tenure with UDS, Kovalam. Raj Hospitality (RHMC) has won two 14

Prestigious Awards. One for its Contribution to the Hospitality Industry ‘Arch of Excellence Award’ for the outstanding accomplishments and industrial excellence in the field of Hospitality by All India Achiever’s Conference, New Delhi. And the Second one by Epicurus South India Hospitality Award for the ‘Best Hospitality Management Company 2013, Karnataka’. A book named ‘Dasavathar’ is completed and awaiting for the release. I have been now opening up with various projects in hand. In that my most favourites are ‘Spice Grove by Mandharaa’, Thekkady a Boutique Hotel and then ‘Imperial Royal Garden’ (a 5 Star project to start). Raj Hospitality also works on a few other new projects which are coming in Karnataka. This Year we are surely planning to achieve a

quantum jump. Diversification into different business has become the order of the day to expand one’s business empire. And tell us more about Raj Group’s diversified business? Raj Hospitality has started a new concept under its brand to Market Exclusive Properties all over India. Hence it has started the New Business Module called X’clusive for marketing hotels. These hotels will not be managed by Raj Hospitality. Raj Hospitality does not believe in diversification. Anything within Hospitality management will be thought about. My aim is Raj Academy where I would like to give best of training to the students and the hoteliers. From your view point what

are the pros and cons of the hospitality sector? There are many Pros and Cons of hospitality sector but as far as I am concerned the challenge of working in customer relations are the most important of all. Careers in customer relations are not easy, but they can be personally, professionally and financially rewarding. Weigh the pros and the cons of the industry for yourself before you get involved. At many levels of customer relations, you will be on your feet for long shifts, required to do multiple things at once and keep a good attitude throughout. You have got a vast experience in the field of hotel industry. Do you think you could convert your

expertise into success in your business? Elaborate on this. There is always a saying that it’s not necessary for any good restaurant entrepreneur to know cooking and is not necessary an excellent cook can run a good restaurant. Yes, I can convert my expertise into successful business model. I have been breathing the word called Professional Hotelier. I do not believe in compromising on the quality and get down to a level of monetary benefits are given importance due to survival became tough.

ASIAN TRAVELLER | APRIL 2013

Many compromise for money, whatever they gets they just manage and make something which surely may not be even 10% of their caliber. But the demand is for cheap and as a human tendency people gives what a client need. They don’t try to graduate the clients as they need some quick money only. Raj Hospitality believes in the best and for everything good to see, you need patience. We never say no. We are one of those magicians who have a magic stick in his hand. We built the base, the

foundation first. We make a positive and memorable impression with people whom we intend to do business. From the top to the bottom the entire team works with the positive note: “We are owners” but just not a salesman. That’s our feelings. We really get involved in the tasks and projects taken by us. For us every new property is like a newly wedded bride, we make sure lots of details in grooming the bride (Property) are spent. Of course our expertise will surely help to make the business successful. What are your future aspirations and plans for the expansion of your business? Those who do not dream but making the dream to reality is what I believe and I would like to say when we see a dream we use CVG formula. Reality = Commitment + Visualize + Go. To succeed, first thing required is commitment. If you commit for something, it’s a human tendency to follow the commitment. I would like to see my

company in the top as a ‘Good & Great Desi Brand’. To have Raj Hospitality Brand established in India with at least one Property in all major Metros and International level in Maldives, Colombo, UK and South Africa. My Dream of catering college is still a dream which has not come out as a successful result-Ten Hotels in three years. We have introduced a brand called ‘X’clusive’ for marketing properties all over India, as we have advantages of – key professionals, good network on business, great customer care culture with us. What adjustments do luxury lodge owners have to make to accommodate Asian guests? All the lodges can accommodate specific dietary requests, within reason. This does not mean turning their menus inside out to offer a completely culturally different menu to their usual offering. But it does mean they can cater to specific sensitivities and dietary needs (vegetarian, allergies, religious dietary constraints etc). However, as most of the lodges operate in a remote environment, and are catering to a fairly small number of people at any one time, advance notice of these requests needs to be given for them to realistically fulfil expectations. at Luxperience this year? Meet new, quality buyers and introduce them to this new era of high-end travel experiences Australia has to offer. Increasingly I have luxury travel buyers contact me or sit down at a trade show with me and say, "I've never been to Australia and never really sold it. But my high-end clients are starting to ask about it, so I need to educate myself." The buyers attending Luxperience seem to come with a clear focus on learning about Australia. This is exactly what we want -- a win win situation. It's essential that those same buyers discover for themselves some of the lodges on pre- and post-tours. They're here already. They should do. What could state and federal tourism bodies in Australia

do better to help promote lux lodges overseas? They are already doing a lot, particularly Tourism Australia. The new campaign is aspirational, and offers much more than a mainstream, familiar icon view of Australia and its diversity of experiences. This is essential to stimulate regional dispersal -- a key requirement for tourism promotion bodies. What are your predictions for rest of 2013 for the lux lodge sector in Australia? Many of the lodges are seeing healthy growth in bookings. Hopefully, the year will see further growth in awareness that Australia has changed. It has come of age. For the first time Australia has critical mass and diversity of high-end travel options for lux experience seekers.

russels with its pralines and chocolates, the jazz venues and nightclubs, the beer and moules et frites, has gained the reputation s a place for adults to play. But it offers a lot of entertainment for children too. After all Brussels is the home of the cartoon strip and whimsical artists like René Magritte. It’s also long been at the forefront of European puppetry. Both Bande dessinée and puppetry are art forms with a huge adult following these days but they attest to the inherent playfulness of the Belgian psyche, something that makes the city of Brussels a very child-friendly place to visit. The Belgian Centre for Comic Strip Art (Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée) is a must for any children 26

(and their parents) who have enjoyed Tintin or the Smurfs. These Belgian icons are just a few of the cartoon characters whose fictional lives are celebrated here in the Lower Town, inside a former department store designed by the great Art Nouveau architect, Victor Horta. As well as a lot of interactive opportunities to discover how comic strips are actually put together, the centre has its own excellent shop and restaurant. There are also lifesize models of Tintin, Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus in their lunar exploration suits that bring out everyone’s cameras. Who can resist being photographed alongside the first men on the moon? Beyond the Comic Strip Centre itself, Brussels has

been colonised by Bande dessinée. There are numerous first-class shops devoted to the art form and to its merchandise that will delight children. Shop windows along Boulevard Anspach are dotted with models of bright blue Smurfs, the urbane cult Chat, Broussaille and a multitude of characters from the world of both Asterix and Tintin. But you’ll also find the facades of whole buildings taken over by cartoon characters as part of the city’s Comic Strip Route. In 1991 Brussels came up with the idea of simultaneously commemorating its most popular fictional characters and dealing with the gable ends of some rather unappetising terraces. Now almost 40 walls have been covered in massive tributes to 35 or so Belgian comic

strip artists, with new walls being added at a rate of two or three a year. A guide book is available so families can trek from one huge cartoon to the next. Some of the images are particularly witty, with several working the location of the wall into a moment in a cartoon narrative. For example, in Rue du Marché au Charbon behind the Grand’ Place you can see a mural in which young Broussaille crosses the same road as you and in another the heroic Victor Sackville is pictured walking stealthily down the road in a scene from L’Opéra de la Mort. Near la Gare du Midi and its Eurostar Terminal you can catch Captain Haddock and Tintin coming down the side of a real building on a two dimensional fire escape and

This colourful, unusual structure, hidden in a wood on the edge of the modern town of Louvain, was designed by Pritzkerprize winning Christian de Portzamparc who wanted to create the impression of a museum that had been drawn rather than built. Inside is everything any Tintin fan could want to know about Hergé and his boyreporter hero. Back in Brussels itself there is a wide range of more traditional museums that always delights younger visitors. The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences is a modern building offering a whole gallery devoted to mammals adapted to living at the Earth’s two poles. It also contains the world’s largest museum hall completely dedicated to dinosaur skeletons, including 30 fossilized Iguanodons, which were discovered in 1878 in Wallonia, in the South of Belgium.

dating from 1536 but no king ever lived in it. Built as a “Broodhuis” (bread house) from which bakers sold their loaves, it was taken over as an administrative centre by the dukes of Brabant, then Masters of Bruxelles, hence its French name “Maison du Roi”.

Another stunning – but very different – building is the MIM, the Musical Instruments Museum on the slopes of Montagne de la Cour leading up to the Royal Quarter. Here a huge collection of instruments is housed in one of the most imaginative Art Nouveau buildings in

The Brussels City Museum located on the Grand Place in what is known as The King’s House also attracts its share of young visitors but for a very different reason. During the Hapsburg Spanish occupation of Brussels all the city’s theatres were closed for fear that actors would whip up dissent among the population. Q&A Parul Sinha, a Director of Treya Consulting and Board Director of The Red Dot Tours Pvt. Ltd has worked in the hospitality & tourism business for nearly twenty years as a marketing and communications strategist. In an exclusive interview with Asian Traveller she shares her experience of tasting success in the hospitality industry being a woman.

You have a vast experience of more than 20 years as a marketing and communications strategist in the hospitality and tourism sector, how do you view this?

using technology to increase awareness about us and are working on various strategies and have planned phased implementation in different markets.

I started as a customer service executive and worked my way to the top. I have experienced all aspects of this industry, from planning holidays to designing a resort. The more challenge that came my way, the more I learnt. Our industry is about service and information – they go hand in hand and have to be relevant to the minute. I have grown with the industry and seen the changes over these last two decades or so. Most of it is brilliant, though a lot of work and improvements are still required. I learnt and imbibed at every level, I had some tough bosses and learnt the maximum from them. I have travelled across the country and learnt hospitality with humility.

The Red Dot is a premium destination management company and you do the business in a contemporary manner to the modern day traveller. Tell us more about your company?

What are your strategies to develop Red Dot Tours as major players in the global tourism industry? The Red Dot has been set up as a niche company which will concentrate on experiential and personalized travel. At Red Dot we plan to offer an amalgamation of experiences which include the traditional as well as the contemporary aspects of our destinations. Apart from niche, custom travel, we will also be looking at affinity group travel and GLBT travel in our regions. We already have offices in US and UK, and a presence in Canada. We are seriously looking at increasing our presence in Europe. We are also

Like the country and our people, travellers and visitors are also changing. People visiting our destinations want to see the bricks and mortar – our beautiful palaces, our rich cultures etc. but they also want to see the change happening in the country. They are amazed by the progress and the advancement in technology and communication and also amazed by how we manage to still keep our culture alive. It is our job as a destination management company to bridge the gap between the two India’s and showcase all that’s best. The most important thing in our book is our deep love of our country and it gives us delight and pleasure to share it with all our guests. As the director of the Red Dot Tours how do you enjoy your job profile? I love my job and am emotionally and personally engaged in my work. Since I was a teenager and read about a tour guide in a Mills and Boon novel, I wanted to be in travel. It wasn’t a straight road though, I did many other things, including Hotel operations, then sales, outbound travel, cruise sales, conference operations, setting up of a resort etc. before I got into the DMC business. Once here, I embraced it fully. As the Director or The ASIAN TRAVELLER | APRIL 2013

However,I still feel that we need to make a lot of changes in our industry to make it better for women, including a standardization of salaries, gender equality as well as safety. Women are well suited for travel jobs and we need to capitalize on their inherent talent.

Since you enjoy the top position of a company and you being a woman what are the difficulties you have faced in this field?

There are various ways to take a company into a leadership position. I believe amongst the most important are leadership and sales. I am a natural leader and lead by example. It is necessary that the land lease

be renewed for a period of 99 years at the earliest in favour of KIOCL,” Chatterjee said. The project, he claimed, would generate revenue for the state and create an additional employment potential for the locals. “We have already prepared the detailed project report and got inprinciple nod from the Karnataka government for the project. A total of Rs 805 crore investment would be made in the project in phases,” Chatterjee said. KIOCL, earlier known

as Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd, had an iron ore mine in Kudremukh. But the operation of the mine had to be closed down in 2006 due to environmental issues, after 30 years of operation. KIOCL

executive officer of PBTDP, said that 20 new tents will be installed as there has been an increased demand from tourists. “Tourists, staying in the tents will be provided complimentary breakfast,”

said Yatish Last year PBTDP had installed nine air-conditioned furnished tents on the shore. Each of these tents could accommodate two people. The new tents will be installed on wooden platforms as Coastal Regulation Zone rules do not allow permanent structures on beaches. There are more facilities in store for tourists visiting beach this summer. Come May, instead of walking to the beach from the National Highway, visitors can take a ride on horse carriage. The beach authorities are planning to launch horse-carriage service with a seating capacity of 11. This open top horse-

carriage has been customized with alloy wheels and braking system. “The work of building the carriage is completed. We will bring a pair of horses from Mumbai. The service has been introduced to promote ecofriendly vehicles on the beach and it is expected to give a boost to beach tourism in this region,” he added. A food festival will also be organized in Panambur beach in May. The festival will see a wide variety of coastal cuisines. The other ongoing enthralling activities for tourists here is dolphin safari, where a boat ride will be taken to sight the dolphins, jet-ski and banana rides.

Bike Tourism in Thailand

T

hailand is one of the world’s greatest motorcycle travel destinations. It is a geographically diverse country that offers motorcycle tours through dense jungles with abundant wildlife in the north and along beautiful beaches in the south. For the off-roader, you will find as much excitement as you can handle. For the road cruiser, cruise on smooth fast super highways or enjoy the banked, curving mountain roads. Thailand has all sorts of scenery and climates to choose from. Touring by motorcycle is one of the best ways to make contact with the local people and really get to experience a Thailand that you can’t get when a part of the tour-group crowd. In the South are Thailand’s beautiful islands with beaches that have been immortalized in postcards and dreams. Here you find a way of life that has attracted people from all over the world to come live here. Tourism has touched, but not yet destroyed the life here. People are still friendly to foreigners, especially in the small villages. In the North are the hill

tribes of Thailand and ancient Lanna culture tracing its roots to Burma, Laos and China. The people are known for their hospitality and relaxed way of life. The weather here is usually cooler than the rest of Thailand due to its location in the foothills of the Himalayas. There isn’t any snow, but in some areas it gets cold enough to make coldlovers feel right at home. The North also has the best riding in all of Thailand. The Northeast, called Isaan, is considered the heart of Thailand. The people here are mostly field workers and factory workers and live a very simple life. The poorest areas in Thailand are mostly in Isaan, and life is a struggle for many people, but this struggle has bred a strength and determination that keeps them going no matter how hard life gets. For me, the life is best exemplified in the music and dances of Isaan. They have a rhythm and feel that makes you want to be a part of it. Road surfaces and conditions in Thailand vary from perfect smooth asphalt to the most muddy, slippery, potholed roads you can

imagine. In the mountains, are some of the roads that bikers love. Banked curves are what many dream about Every place in Thailand that has tourists will have rental bikes. The bikes range from 100cc Honda Dreams, ATX dual-purpose bikes, to big road cruisers from 4001400cc. Prices vary around the country, but expect to pay about 150 baht per 24hr. day for the Dreams to 500 baht+ per day for the big bikes, depending on condition. South East Asia is emerging as one of the world’s most famous travel destinations. As the largest country in the region, Thailand is more than just a gateway. With 10 million visitors a year, it is a highly attractive destination in its own right and can be used as a staging point for tours

to travel to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam or even multi-county vacations. Golden Triangle, a remote area covering parts of Shan State in Myanmar and smaller, adjacent areas of Laos and Thailand. This is one of the most exciting rides in Laos. It is a sensational trip requiring a high level of riding skill, a free spirit and a sense of adventure. inspiring. What inspires me right now is the self belief and determination of our MD and Chariman Er. NK Mohamed, who has this incredible vision for Wayanad . Building a state of the art convention centre with beautiful hills and valleys in the backdrop and promoting Wayanad as a MICE destination is no mean feat Describe us about the art of marketing? Give us a few tips on your marketing tactics? Marketing is an on-going process and you have to keep innovating yourself to be noticed in the market. With so much competition and so many brands around you have to make sure people do not forget you . To back it up, the product that you sell has to live up to expectations. In this day and age, when everything can be shared in an instant it gives me great satisfaction to introduce new destinations to people just like in Kerala, Wayanad is such an evolving destination and there is so much to explore and understand. heights, and so we believe we are on the right track. Personally speaking which is your favourite tourism spot? A small island in Greece called Lindos. I have been there more than once and, what I love there is the friendliness of the local people and how they welcome every one with open arms. Have you ever thought of selling some new ideas and concepts for the people who really go for changes? On many occasions; it is a part of marketing where we have to constantly adapt, meet creative people and always look at the brighter side. Any secret tips for the marketing professionals? No secret tips. Just keep it simple, have self belief and be committed.

Kerala’s ancient bond with West Asia spills into 21st Century in full Swing: Gateway Malabar’s immaculate efforts to promote Arab tourism in the land of Kerala are widely acknowledged by both Governmental and non Governmental fraternities, says Jihad Husain, MD, Gateway Malabar Holidays (P) Ltd, in this insightful article.

T

he association of Gulf Travellers and Tourists with the Coast of Malabar/Kerala and its culture is millenniums old. However, their strong presence on the beautiful landscape of Kerala was sporadic until the historic migration of working hands into West Asia, during last decades of the past century. Monsoon rains, mists, clouds and backwater attractions

pulled in few medium-budget Arab tourists to this land during the rainfall months of June to September, which was otherwise considered off-season according to the Western Tourism. Arabs were lured to this destination by word-of-mouth rather than glossy multi coloured brochures speaking their psyche and language, or descriptions of facilities, amenities and services specifically carved for the cultural preferences or social distinctiveness of Arab guests. Thanks to the integrated

efforts of the tourism development ministries of the State and the Centre, and to the charismatic endeavors of visionary operators who boldly rose to the occasion; the Arab tourism has done away with the peak season and offseason concepts altogether. Arab tourists on the Kerala map are seen throughout the year now. Language no longer is a barrier, and cultural inhibitions do not exist at all, up to the level of opening the heart to ask the kind of service or information they are in need of. Large pool of Arabic speaking Gulf experienced chauffeurs/drivers and a host of restaurant chefs who are familiar with West Asian and Mediterranean cuisine give an ‘at home’ feeling. Opening up of natural healthcare avenues and water ride/recreation facilities, where Arab families can preserve their pristine culture, have widened the scope and measures of travel and tourism further. Gateway Malabar Holidays – Arabs own Gateway Gateway Malabar Holidays Pvt.
