EDITOR’S NOTE

Wishing all our esteemed readers a merry X’mas and a Happy New Year Asia Tourism – Gearing Ahead

T

The challenges faced by the tourism are keeping up with the growth and keeping the infrastructure aligned with the demand. The problem is more about satisfying the demand and getting enough of the right people to provide the service. If you look into the various aspects of individual countries, you can see that Japan has recovered from the collapse in tourism sector due to last year’s Tsunami and during the first nine months of 2012 registered a 13.7 per cent growth. However, since news emerged of its island dispute with China the momentum has been lost somewhat. Nonetheless, the Japanese are still optimistic about their travel plans for 2013. Out bound trips from South Korea increased by 6.7 per cent, while most markets in South and South East Asia lost momentum. Yet again, the most frequent travellers came from China and Japan, both countries reporting double-digit growth in outbound travel in 2012. During the first six months of this year the number of outbound trips from China grew by 20 per cent. Accordingly, India, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore reported less than five per cent growth. The outlook for most Asian markets is positive, so there is good reason to be optimistic about tourism next year. Only one-third of Asians said the global financial crisis would affect their travel plans, while two-thirds said it had no impact at all. Yearon-year data shows that Asia has recovered slightly. Asian Traveller magazine has always been a co-runner for the tourism industry nationally and internationally and has decided to spread its wings in a magnanimous way. As a part of its on going expansion plans the magazine has shifted its focus of operations to the commercial hub of Kerala. The new corporate office at Kochi was inaugurated by Mr. A. P. Anilkumar ,the Tourism minister of Kerala and many esteemed dignitaries blessed the occasion with their gracious presence. And Asian Traveller is all set to mark a new horizon in the annals of tourism industry.

ASEAN TOURISM

Mari Elka Pangestu, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Republic of Indonesia, shares her vision on what ASEAN’s tourism priorities should be

ASEAN Tourism Needs Better Connectivity and Infrastructure The ten destinations of ASEAN are very diverse. To what extent is that a help or a hindrance when promoting ASEAN as a destination?

improve connectivity and accessibility by road, sea, air, and rail, within the region.

In my opinion, we should prioritize strengthening domestic, regional and I see the diversity of international connectivity ASEAN destinations as a and developing tourist strength, not a weakness. If destinations through you go to all 10 destinations, you will find some similarities cooperation in infrastructure building, both soft and hard -- i.e. warm engagement infrastructure. In order to between tourists and local meet infrastructure needs, people. The main problem joint frameworks such as in promoting ASEAN as a public-private partnerships single tourist destination is should be welcomed. connectivity and tourism infrastructure. To attract more In your view, what are the tourists to ASEAN, we should key sales and promotional

6

points that ASEAN should be promoting to tourists in ASEAN and beyond? The ASEAN region is rich in culture, heritage sites, diverse landscapes, natural beauty, and marine attractions. All tourism products could be promoted to every segment of the international tourist market, because each product has its own uniqueness. I think another important promotional point of ASEAN Tourism is the warmth and hospitality of ASEAN people. Everywhere you go in

ASEAN, you will experience how cultures and traditions blend in with contemporary everyday life. It’s a charming mixture of tradition and modernity. What are the main challenges for the tourism sector in ASEAN ahead of AEC 2015? Connectivity and infrastructure are the main challenges for ASEAN tourism. That’s why ASEAN leaders have established the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2011-2015. ASEAN member states have implemented the 2006 ASEAN

ASIAN TRAVELLER | DECEMBER 2012

ASEAN TOURISM Framework Agreement for Visa Exemption of ASEAN nationals to support ASEAN integration and connection as one community (reaffirmed by the ASEAN Leaders at the 19th ASEAN Summit). In addition, Indonesia and other ASEAN governments also support the initiative to develop the ASEAN common visa (ASEAN single visa) for non-ASEAN nationals in the future. We believe that this will support the promotion of ASEAN Tourism as a single tourism destination, as well as ASEAN’s greater integration and contribution to the global community. How does the tourism industry in Indonesia feel about the advent of AEC 2015? Most tourism industries in Indonesia are aware of AEC 2015, and they are encouraged by the government to participate in the development. In AEC 2015, there will be free flow of goods, services, investment, capital, and skilled human resources. What needs to be done to make the ASEAN tourism region more user-friendly for investors? There are number of approaches which could be done by the ASEAN member states: providing tourism investment opportunities and incentives, and providing clear rules and regulations in each country. To promote tourism investment, especially in infrastructure development, Indonesia has implemented three policies: 1) increasing the incentives given to tourism sector investment 2) simplifying the investment procedures in tourism sector, and 3) increasing investment promotions in the tourism sector. We are also working on adding more Special

Economic Zones (SEZ) in tourism. We already have one SEZ in tourism in Tanjung Lesung, Banten. Coming up soon will be Mandalika in West Sumbawa. Having these Special Economic Zones, allows us to offer more fiscal incentives to foreign investment as well as more facilitation to investors. Indonesia is making progress on attracting cruise operators. What needs to be done to get the cruise sector activated across ASEAN? In order to get the cruise sector activated across ASEAN, we have a work plan that should be done by the ASEAN member states: developing cruise infrastructure; developing itineraries and routes; promoting ASEAN cruises at international trade and consumer fairs; and collaborating with international cruise organizations and associations. To boost cruise tourism, Indonesia is in the process of completing five ports that can accommodate vessels with a size of 320 metres by the end of 2013 -- Sabang, Belawan, Jakarta, Surabaya and Benoa. An additional three ports which are able to accommodate cruise ships of very large capacity at anchor -- Lombok, Tanah Ampo, and Komodo -- will also be completed by 2014.

Tourism Forum in Vientiane in January 2013? I believe that the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2013 in Laos will provide a great opportunity for all ASEAN member states to discuss ways to providing an increased number of visitors to the region with authentic and diverse products, enhanced connectivity, a safe and secure environment, and increased quality of services. At the same time, this has to be done by ensuring an increasing quality of life and opportunities for residents through responsible and sustainable tourism development. How desirable is an ASEAN common visa?

There is no doubt that the ASEAN common visa will increase the number of international tourist arrivals to the ASEAN region. It will also accelerate the realization of the ASEAN Economic What message will Indonesia Community (AEC), ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community be taking to the ASEAN

(ASCC), and ASEAN Political Security Community (APSC).

Can ASEAN promote niche activities, such as adventure, experiential, business and long stay -- as well as mass tourism? How? Yes of course we can. Market segmentation is based on experience and activities. We can develop appropriate itineraries that meet with tourist needs or creative segmentation. In Indonesia, we are now focusing on seven special interest tourism sectors: historical and cultural tourism; nature and ecotourism; culinary and shopping tourism; MICE; recreational sports tourism; cruise; and health and wellness tourism. Our new tourism attractions are expected to draw not only a higher number of tourist arrivals but, more importantly, higher quality tourists. We hope that foreign tourists will stay longer and spend more time in Indonesia.

Exclusive Interview Synthite was among the first in India to enter spice oleores in manufacturing. From that pioneering start in 1972, the company has grown to become the world’s most trusted spice ingredient provider, with a turnover of over USD 125 million and commanding over 30 per cent of the global market share. Synthite is a diversified group now, with interests in fields as diverse as bio ingredients, spice, natural specialties, farm tech, hospitality, and realty and wind energy. Synthite ventured into the hospitality business 14 years back with “Riviera Suites” and later with Ramada, the first resort in Kochi. Dr. Viju Jacob, Director Synthite, shares with ASIAN TRAVELLER about the company’s diversification into hospitality industry.

Trend Setter Synthite Industries Ltd. is a name established for diversified business. Hospitality is one among your major areas of activity. Can you brief us about your presence in the hospitality sector? Synthite ventured into the hospitality business 14 years back with “Riviera Suites”. At that time it was a revolutionary concept in Kerala and probably South India. This is the first time anyone had introduced the concept of “apartment hotel”. Riviera over the years became a name to reckon with in the Cochin hospitality sector. After Riviera, Synthite ventured into the luxury hospitality with the Ramada Resort. Ramada started in June 2008 and in this short span of time, it has become a name by itself. What was your idea when you diversified into the hospitality sector? Being a diversified

8

professional organization, Ramada Resort is another feather in the hat of Synthite. I do travel a lot. I stayed in almost all big hotels in the world. My travelling experience provoked me to think to have our own hotel matching with the latest facilities available in the world. We have taken the best talents to run the resort, and Ramada Resorts, Cochin today is a well-known name among travelers. RAMADA RESORTS is one of your prestigious projects. What is the innovative conceptualization you experimented to make it to the top names? The main concept behind the resort was to be close to nature and in this case the famous backwaters. The resort is far from the maddening crowd yet close to the city. It is not only positioned as a destination for overseas travelers, but also to the city people, who like a quick

break from their routine work schedule. You really don’t have to travel to Kumarakom for the backwater experience, it is right here in Cochin. This was the first resort in Cochin and we had the first mover advantage. How do you treat your customers in a special way? We believe that every customer is unique. Gone are the days when we had tailor made processes for everything. The processes are guidelines and not rules. Hence we treat each guest uniquely. This is not an easy task to achieve. But our team has been highly successful in this way of operation. And reinforce that, we have in 2010 and 2011 has come second in the Best Customer satisafaction among all Ramadas in Asia Pacific region. We are aiming for No:1 this year. Just brief us about the scope and hurdles of hospitality sector in Kochi? There are several issues plaguing the hospitality sector, especially the high taxation. Given this is one of main revenue earners for the state; it is also one of the heavily taxed. The

infrastructure for the tourists is very basic. Our roads are congested. Electricity is a major issue both in terms of availability and cost. Bar timings is another touchy subject among hoteliers in Cochin. There is not enough information at the tourist spots and the monuments about the history or the importance of the place. Policy decisions affecting tourism should be discussed with all stakeholders. What are the plans from your side to boost the requirements of tourism sector? It is not possible to boost tourism individually; It is a collective effort of hotels, tour operators and government. Kerala has been marketed brilliantly. But now we need to move beyond Ayurveda and backwater. There is a danger of the product being fatigued by over use. We have to find a new mantra. Any future expansion plans from your side? No plans at the moment. Because of lack of support from the Government, we are not able to fully utilize the backwaters for boating and other water sports activities.

ATF 2013 In an interview, Lao PDR, Minister, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Bosengkham Vongdara, says that arranging adequate number of hotel rooms has been the biggest challenge for Laos hosting the ASEAN Tourism Forum which takes place, from 17-24 January 2013. Nevertheless he said preparations were nearly all in place.

LAOS Ready for ATF 2013 What has been the biggest challenge preparing Vientiane for ATF 2013? Because Vientiane is quite a small city with a lot of tourism demand in January, the biggest challenge has been arranging available hotel rooms for all ATF guests. And getting the transport arrangements right. What benefits do you think will come to Laos from ATF 2013?

they can relax in a beautiful boutique hotel with friendly service, smiling faces all round -- and have a nice glass of wine with a delicious meal. It's the perfect end to a perfect day in Laos. As a host of ASEAN Tourism Ministers Meeting in 2013, what would be your recommendations about promoting tourism in ASEAN countries?

at clever and exciting ways to promote niche activities such as dining, community tourism, shopping, UNESCO heritage tours, honeymoons, incentives and ecotourism. The ten destinations of ASEAN are very diverse. To what extent is that a help or a hindrance when promoting ASEAN as a destination? Let a million flowers bloom. Variety is good in tourism as in life. ASEAN benefits from its amazing diversity, cultural heritage and warmth of its people. Can ASEAN promote niche activities such as adventure, experiential, business and long stay -- as well as mass tourism? How? Yes, easily. One of the strengths of diversity is that ASEAN has something for everyone. Whatever niche activity you like, you can do it here. And if you want to be driven around in a group tour bus from one main attraction to another you can do that too. What needs to be done to make the ASEAN tourism region more user-friendly for investors?

Should the message for ASEAN tourists be different for tourists outside the region I think economic growth is -- say in Japan, Middle East pretty much guaranteed. But or Europe? that alone is not enough. country trips. Our food, our heritage sites and great shopping bargains. These are my favourite things. What are the main challenges for the tourism sector in ASEAN ahead of AEC 2015? Human Resource Development because tourism is growing so quickly. The challenge is producing enough talented people to service the growth. How does the tourism industry in Laos feel about the advent of AEC 2015? We are in favour of it. If it is good for ASEAN, it is good for Laos. Where do the priorities for ASEAN tourism integration lie -- with the private sector or government sector? We have to walk hand in hand. To maximise returns on investment, the public and private sectors have to be working as one team. Laos is big on ecotourism. Is ecotourism synonymous with budget travel? Why? No, you can have ecotourism at any price point -- budget to luxury. The uniting feature is a love of Mother Nature. And we have some beautiful National Protected Areas, waterfalls, rivers, caves, mountains and wildlife in Laos. As an eco tourism destination, Laos is hard to beat. 9

Cochin State was formed in 1102 A.D. by the splitting up of Kulasekhara. In 1503, Kochi was taken over by the Portuguese and in 1663 the Dutch came to the city by overtaking the Portuguese. From 1814 the city came under the British till India’s independence. Kochi is located at the southern most part of the country. In the earlier days, Kochi was known as Perumpadappunad. The city was transformed into an important commercial hub by the British, Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese and Italians. Many scholars and travellers like Vasco da Gama, FaHien, and Sir Robert Bristow had visited Kochi and had major contributions in the growth and prosperity of the city. CHILLAX COFFEE SHOP

The absence of 24×7 coffee shops have been a hitch to the nightlife in Kochi. But now we have the right decent place to sit over a cup of coffee after the late night club or house parties. Doesn’t it feel good when you chat with your friends or your date over some nice food at 2 a.m.?? Well, you must try it out to feel the

18

‘good’ part about it. Chillax started off around three months back, and is located adjacent to Tyrex at NH Bypass in Vytilla. Kiran. M. who owns this place says that this is the best way to promote nightlife in Kochi. Even though the concept is to attract bikers, people of all ages visit here. “Daytime is not very

crowded, but we have a flood of people coming in during nightlife, be it weekdays or weekends”. If your sole motive is to try out food, go for fish ‘n’ chips along with a vanilla shake which can create wonders. Also, the chocolates that are packed (exclusive for Chillax customers) are worth the try! The best part is they

plan to start Arabic grills soon (sometime by the first week of April), and that too grilled all the way by a Lebanese chef! This would be heaven for nightlife lovers, who love food and loves being in a ‘chillax’ atmosphere. Chillax has another coffee shop at Fine Arts Hall Road also.

tete-a-tete Biswajit Chakraborty has recently been appointed as the General Manager of Mövenpick Hotel & Spa Bangalore. He brings to the property, the experience of 25 years of association with established hotel brands like The Leela, The Oberoi among others. Prior to this, he was the General Manager of The Leela Mumbai for three years. Biswajit Chakraborty in an exclusive interview with ASIAN TRAVELLER, shares his experience in the hospitality industry.

Mövenpick a Perfect Swiss brand You being the man at the helm of your hotel group, what made you to venture into the hospitality industry?

Although I began my career in finance I got in hospitality by pure accident – I was inspired by one of my friends who was in the industry. I began with the Taj group- Taj Residency on MG road Bangalore which is now the Taj Vivanta. I have had the privilege of working with the best brands in the country like Taj, The Leela, Oberoi and now the Swiss International company Mövenpick. Each of these assignments have been unique no two days have been the same –this is what ignites my passion everyday when I come to work. Now the hospitality industry is on a changing phase of innovations and novel concepts. What are the measures you have introduced to cope up with your competitors in the industry?

Mövenpick is truly a perfect Swiss brand- as reliable as a Swiss Watch, innovative and appealing as a Swiss chocolate and respected world wide as Switzerland is. Our group encourages “Differentiators” the Mövenpick Bangalore has introduced a very high degree of personalization i.e. International newspapers, channels as per nationalitythere is high degree of customization involved for every guest. Product innovation includes Bonsai Lounge, Obsidian Music and sports Bar live streaming videos through a satellite, a coffee wall, extremely innovative Food & Beverage – the hotel already has won several awards for each of its restaurants. The banqueting is also highly personalized with themed tea breaks and customized Food & Beverage. We are in the process of launching “Sky Brew” which

Our region is on the company’s radar- in the next three to four years we could be looking at six hotels in India, Bangladesh, and in Colombo. Most of them are already signed and our under construction. This is a combination of business hotels as well as resorts. Any suggestions to improve the domestic industry in comparison with the global market? I think we need the “Industry Status” so that we get various concessions in procurement and other monetary benefits.

The domestic industry should look at making hotel acquisitions, licensing, projects etc. far more attractive to owners as well as the operators. Domestically there is huge dearth of mid scale hotels in the country- as compared to even cities like Singapore, Paris etc. The government needs to focus on this industry since this is one of the highest foreign exchange earners. Brands like ours would also generate employment for Indians abroad- if treated well. About your family? Like all of us- we exist for our families- I am blessed with a wonderful wife and two children who have always stood by me and encouraged me through out. I always pray that I live up to their expectations.

If you find island hopping interesting here are some of the major islands that will take your breath away. Langkawi is an archipelago made up of 99 islands on Malaysia’s west coast. Surrounded by turquoise sea, the interior of the main island is a mixture of picturesque paddy fields and jungleclad hills. Located hard by the border with Thailand, Langkawi is part of the Malaysian state of Kedah, not Perlis which is in fact directly adjacent. Its charm and beauty is internationally acknowledged and today it is the number one tourist destination in the country. It is breathtakingly beautiful with white sand beaches and clear waters. The place has the most incredible views of rainforest, the Seven Wells Waterfall (Telaga Tujuh) and the island spreading out below. Another popular day trip is to hire a boat and explore the nearby islands. Boat rides also offer eagle viewing, cave explorations and snorkeling at Pulau Payar Marine Park. If you are interested in carting off duty-free alcohol, cigarettes and chocolate, then this is the place to be. Still, nature-lovers will find the island just as agreeable as the shoreline is fringed by powder-fine sand and swaying coconut trees.

Tioman Island is part of Malaysian state of Pahang and is popular for two reasons: One, this teardrop-shaped isle was (supposedly) used as a backdrop for the 1958 movie “South Pacific,” while Time magazine named it one of the world’s most beautiful islands in the 1970s.

There are many hotels and chalets situated right off the beach which gives you a chance to mingle with nature by sitting with a book, going for a walk or just soaking in the atmosphere. The other major attraction is the monitor lizards that roam among the kampungs (Malay for villages). The tourists can scuba dive, enjoy the jungles and rainforests or visit some of the most amazing beaches . There are bus services from all over Malaysia to Mersing; from here it’s a two-hour boat ride to the first jetty on the island. Hospitality had been a dream I pursued since my childhood, with cooking being my passion which led me to the Hotel School and eventually ventured into various aspects of this exciting business . it’s been a humble learning experience by improvising each work day to deliver the best– having the opportunity to meet so many people from different walks of life apart from creating unique guest experiences and more importantly having touched so many lives during the

Exclusive Interview pot and it’s all about finding new markets and creating new business concepts and opportunities within the frame work of what one has. As economy evolves around the globe , so does the business mix and the trends in our business which we need to keep changing as per the need of the hour… it’s all a matter of perception and to be on top of one’s game. How do you compare the hotel business in India and abroad? India has its strengths in its people and in the principle of the age old Mantra of “Athiti Devo Bhava” that drives the

soul of our business here for our guests. Internationally it has evolved just as another business which caters to a mix of clients . Technology which was not our edge a decade back, has also caught upto speed and the globe has indeed become a much smaller place in this area as well. What are the strategies you have adopted to tap the tourists from destinations other than the traditional markets? Re packaging guest experiences catering to specific requirements of various markets, using the

global reach of Starwood Worldwide Inc. to explore various markets around the globe. Since you have a very good business from both domestic and international customers, do you feel that international travellers contribute a major share of your business? This ratio changes from time to time and as per the business and season mix that we have in this part of the world. Brief us about any future plans to expand your business? We are currently focusing on repositioning the product

and coming up with new offers in F&B and as well as renovation of our rooms as per theInternational Le Meridien Standards. The Convention Centre has been repositioned as a product that could cater to the needs of both national and international clients embracing the contemporary and modern aesthetics of the brand and with state of the art audio visual equipment along the opportunity to experience the 18 acres of outdoor space that enables one to capture nature at its best. Any suggestions to improve the domestic industry in comparison with the global market? Exploring the unexplored arenas of traditional beauty is itself a challenging one. And especially when it is done by an expert with innovative ideas. While giving an exclusive interview to ASIAN TRAVELLER Dr. S. Jeevan, the CEO of Samudra shipyard talked about the inspirational growth of his company as the No. 1 in house boat manufacturing.

Sailing Smoothly SAMUDRA SHIPYARD is the No. 1 houseboat manufacturers in Kerala. What was the inspiration behind this idea of manufacturing the houseboats which is mostly a traditional and artistic work? Inspiration was attending a TIFAC seminar ( The Technology Information, Forecasting and assessment council ) this is under the dept of science & technology. They were inviting innovative concepts . Our proposal for converting the kettuvallams into composite was approved . This saves atleast 20 of 100 year old Anjili trees , it takes at least 100 years for a tree to reach the boat building specification. We have 54

innovation awards for your innovative conversion of kettuvallam into a luxury house boat. How do you rate this prestigious recognition? JEC is the Oscar for the composite industry, where every year experts converge to discuss /review / reveal innovations, in marine, aviation, civil, non conventional energy, Medical etc. It happens in Asia, Europe and the Americas. We were awarded for innovation in marine applications by Jec Asia 2012 Do you outsource any advanced technology from outside or are you having technology facilities in your own factory? We do outsource. For eg. For the House Boat project, we partnered with IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras. We also work closely with the DRDO – The defence research & Development organisation Apart from house boats,

what are SAMUDRA’s other products and important clients? Power Boats, Canoes, Pontoon Boats, Rowing & Pedal Boats, Sports fishing boats, Para sail Boats etc Being the CEO of the company, what are the hurdles you faced when you decided to start this novel concept of house boat manufacturing? When we look at the initial days ( 1990 ), convincing people about the relatively new construction medium (fibreglass) was a difficult job. The price for a given size of FRP boat when compared

ASIAN TRAVELLER | DECEMBER 2012

to that of wood was almost double . Over these years , the difference has narrowed and the cost of a wooden boat is now more than that of an FRP boat. It took almost 20 years to reach this stage. Wooden vessels require a lot of maintenance, where as fibreglass is almost zero maintenance. Designed life of a fibreglass boat is 25 years. Steel is cheaper by about 10% but it requires heavy

maintenance (painting every year) and lasts for about 7 to 8 years. Any innovative plans on the anvil? Yes. Affordable Water Taxis for the back waters. Passenger boats for Urban water connectivity boats for sea based water sports, for the sea based water sports, we are working with the Kerala port department.

minarets. In the vicinity is a tank called Peer Kulam which is believed to have waters with curative properties. Spread across a total area of five acres with four entrances at each direction, Nagore also features a 131 feet tower near the front gate called ‘Periya Minara’. The Durgah was built on

the land donated by the King of Tanjore to Saint Hazereth Saiyed Shahul Hameed Quader Ali, in gratitude for curing his illness. The Saint exuded great wisdom and spiritual powers even as a child and was born in Manickkapur in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. His father was Hazarath Syed Hasan

Khuddoos Sahib and his mother Beebi Fathima. It is learnt that even before his birth, a divine messenger appeared before his mother in a dream and predicted that she would be blessed with a son who would be the Savior of people and spend his life to spread Islam. He is known to be the 23rd lineal descendant of the Holy Prophet Mohammed. After learning Arabic language and its grammar, he went in search of a religious master who could educate him in understanding the mystery of the universe and its spiritual underpinnings. He went to Gwalior and was initiated by Hazarath Syed Mohamed Ghouse Sahib in divine knowledge. After more than a decade of training, he left Gwalior and went to Manickkapur with over 400 disciples and then toured extensively with his disciples to Afghanistan, Baluchistan and other places of the world performing numerous miracles on the way by raising the dead and by curing incurable diseases. It is known that he blessed a childless couple in Lahore with children and asked them to give their first born to him, for the service of God. He

along with his child came to South India and preached Islam along with his other disciples. Saint Hazreth Ali cured the sick and performed several services to mankind, before he died at the age of sixty eight at Nagore. His tomb is in the Nagore Durgah, his son and his family was also buried here. In honour of the saint, the ‘Kandoori Festival’ is celebrated here in all pomp and splendour. This small town Nagore along the shores of the Bay of Bengal presents the peaceful coexistence of Muslims and other religious faiths. Approximately 16 km south of Karaikal and 4 km north of Nagapattinam, Nagore is flanked by nearby towns Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Muthupet. The popular Kandoori festival season will change based on the lunar calendar but usually occur in the month of May. Adjacent the Nagore railway station is the Seeralamman temple, a century-old Hindu shrine maintained by local fishermen situated in the fishermen’s area. The annual Seeralamman festival season has ten days of celebration.

Sky is the limit for Nirmala Lilly, General Manager of Flora Airport hotel who has reached to this commendable position through her perseverance and commitment. Optimism and confidence are the two key words she upholds in times of crisis. And she is all set to go miles. While talking to ASIAN TRAVELLER she revealed her paths of glory in detail.

As the GM of Flora Airport Hotel what were the initial changes you adopted to give the hotel a new look in the business area? I brought in discipline, systems and procedure in place, fostered team work, friendly and pleasant atmosphere. I initiated on exploring untapped markets and tried different business strategies to increase the revenue.

Nirmala Lilly General Manager, FLORA GROUP HOTELS KOCHI

The hospitality sector is a very inspiring and change savvy sector. Being a woman what was the motivation behind your idea of venturing into this sector and that too with great confidence? Getting into hospitality industry was never in my priority. But once I got into it I started enjoying the job. My motivation initially was my colleagues and then guests. Meeting great people from different walks of life really encouraged me. After six months there was no looking back. Now the job has become my passion and I enjoy every bit of it.

64

I gave thrust to guest satisfaction, which resulted in a huge jump in Tripadvisor. Implemented many initiatives and best practices of other five star Deluxe hotels for the betterment of guest satisfaction. In brief, I could bring about changes in the areas of aesthesis, cuisine and overall services. Brief us about your first assignment in the hospitality sector? My first job was at the Taj Malabar in 1989, and had the dual responsibility of a Confidential Secretary and Reservations Assistant. I was a postgraduate and was holding a few diplomas and then added an MBA too. It was not common for

girls to work in hotels in those days. The initial years in my career were marked by a lot of stress, strain and toil. Also, I struggled to effectively communicate with the guests but I continued my studies along with the job and successfully crossed the hurdles on my way. You will be having great moments of glory which you have achieved in the long run of your career. Can you share with us your proudest moments of achievements with us? The very first year I was awarded as Creative ’89 for my Artwork as part of a competition conducted among all the employees of the Taj Group. I still remember organizing an International residential conference while I was the Banquet Manager. High professional delegates attended the conference. Every night we organized different venues and menu for them. The last Gala Dinner was in an Island where we arranged a Kerala Theme Dinner. They were profusely complementing about untiring services and in the highlight they lifted me in the
