EDITOR’S NOTE

O

ne of the issues raised by participants during the recent international symposium on Tourism and Livelihood held in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala was about the benefits host communities get – should be getting, rather - as a result of tourism activities. Case studies presented at the symposium gave examples of how tourism can contribute in a constructive way to make life in rural areas communities. Tourism is not just about visiting exotic locales and spending money and time there. It has a social responsibility too. Besides being an effective means that drives job creation and economic development in local communities’ tourism can contribute towards increasing access to essential services such as water, sanitation, telecommunications and transport of the communities in which it operates. But if it is not managed properly “the positive benefits of tourism run the risk of bypassing local residents”, as observed in an UNWTO seminar held in Bali, Indonesia. An interesting and unusual characteristic of tourism is it is an instance in which ‘the consumers travel to the point of production to consume the product’. So the well-being of the destination as well as the occupants there is of utmost importance. It is estimated that that travel and tourism accounts for one in thirteen jobs - which means nearly 220 million people world wide and is responsible for over 9 per cent of world wide capital investment. Tourism not only provides opportunity for residents to interact with other people and cultures and brings new ideas into the community but also creates opportunities for the establishment of new products, facilities and services and expansion of existing businesses which would not otherwise be justified solely on the resident population. So tourism activities should be envisioned in such a way to maximize the contribution of tourism to the economy and there by improving the quality of life at the target destination.

Local communities to secure bigger benefits from tourism

T Ensuring that the social and economic benefits of tourism reach local communities was at the heart of the first ‘UNWTO Seminar on Tourism Ethics for Asia and the Pacific: Responsible Tourism and its Socio-Economic Impact on Local Communities’, held in Bali, Indonesia.

ASIAN TRAVELLER

he first UNWTO Seminar on Tourism Ethics for Asia and the Pacific highlighted some of the leading regional examples of tourism development which is respectful and inclusive of local communities. Best practices from Australia to Vanuatu were presented, alongside debates on some of the most pressing issues in tourism ethics and responsible tourism. The Spirit of Bali Statement adopted by the over 150 participants summarizes the main conclusions of the debate and pledges all stakeholders to work together to achieve the proposed recommendations. Tourism has proven one of the most effective means to drive job creation and economic development in local communities. The sector contributes to not only wealth creation, but also

JUNE 2011

increases access to essential services such as water, sanitation, telecommunications and transport. When not properly managed, however, the positive benefits of tourism run the risk of bypassing local residents. The Seminar took place within the framework of the 10th meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics – responsible for promoting and monitoring the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. In Bali, the Committee analyzed a wide array of ethical issues, many for the first time, including the impact of recent events in the Middle East and North Africa on tourism in these countries as well as in neighbouring destinations, the relationship between human rights and tourism, the voice of civil society in tourism planning and management processes, the economic empowerment

of women through tourism, and accessible tourism for all, in particular for persons with disabilities. In light of last year’s travel disruptions caused by the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud and the recent eruption of the Chilean volcano, the Committee placed special attention on the issue of tourist protection. Given the current lack of information and assistance afforded to stranded travellers in crisis situations, the Committee decided to support and assist UNWTO in the preparation of an international legal instrument in this area.

n one of our recent sales meets, our product trainer after extolling and emphasizing the virtues of being connected through various networks asked us, a group of forty of us, as to who all were on the crown jewel of all the social networking sites, the Facebook. One hand after another started going up and finding it difficult to count them in sequence he instantly reversed the question: ‘Okay, who are all not on Facebook?’ Lo and behold, it was just one lone hand that went up and that belonged to me. Now I am also on the Facebook as it was considered a sacrilege that I was not there on. It was a later day small consolation for me to know that Bill Gates is not using Facebook either! It is true that our world is highly connected now and the need is felt even more as we get connected. We have one more phobia added to our already long enough lists of phobias: ‘nomophobia’ Nomophobia is the fear of being out of mobile phone contact (the term comes from ‘No Mo-bile phone’). It is established that 53 per cent of the mobile phone users get stressed if their phones do not work, or battery goes down, or there is no network coverage. So much for the Frankenstein’s monster of the mobile phone, social networking, and its ilk!

Technology is progressing by leaps and bounds. We have already moved up from Web1.0, the plain vanilla web world (‘read only web’) to Web2.0 where we have an extended world of sharing and adding UGC (user generated content), the read-write web. Web3.0 which is known as Semantic Web (‘the portable personal web’) is already on its way while Web4.0 which is called Symbiotic Web (man-machine integration) is already in the works. There is a dotcom for everything now. Starting from dating to marriage, and from marriage to divorce, and to second marriage there is a site for every conceivable act and

activity. ‘CompletCase.com’ claims fast and easy divorces for the discontented couples. The fee is just USD 299 for the divorce case as against a typical attorney’s charge of USD4000 (the ad says ‘You save USD 3701’!). Where are we heading for? ‘e-Funeral’ is already happening – for reasons of want of time or distance if you are not able to attend a near and dear one’s funeral, do not worry! There are services to stream the same to you from the funeral spot and you can virtually attend the last rites from where you are. It sounds morbid to me! Are we in the midst of something exciting happening or getting into a delirious lifestyle? People converse more and more on the net than face to face. We have

started living more in virtual world than in the real one. We do not know for real whether the internet has brought us together or has just robbed us of the human bonding element? The make-believe world is so much engaging for everybody that it is a rarity now to see two friends taking a leisurely stroll down the road for a talk. Rather they would be poking, chatting, friending (and unfriending), wall-posting, and invariably uploading some YouTube stuff not only for each other but for the whole world at large. The posting of videos on the Facebook has now assumed the dimensions of a national movement. The Facebook has especially become one big merry-go-

round for all. In every office, most of the people even before signing into their office mail, first sign into the Facebook. For such religious surfers and online game players, there is something

a few pilgrims take this route to save on time. A helicopter service from Pahalgam to Panchtarni is also in place. Officially, the Yatra is organised by the J&K Government in collaboration with the Shree Amarnath Yatra trust. The Government agencies provide necessary facilities all along the route during the Yatra period, which includes provision of ponies, supply of power, telecommunication facilities, firewood and setting up of fair-price shops. A number of voluntary organisations from across the country join the efforts by setting up pandals to provide eatables and other necessities to the pilgrims all along the route. There are a number of versions about the importance of the pilgrimage. The most popular version is that it was

in this cave that Lord Shiva revealed the secrets of immortality to his consort Parvati. Two pigeons who overheard the conversation achieved immortality and appear briefly at the cave on the Shravana Poornima day, even to this day. One is amazed to see the pair of pigeons surviving in a climate where no birds are ever seen. Inside the cave a natural ice lingam is formed during the Shravana Poornima to represent Lord Shiva which waxes and wanes according to the cycle of the moon. Two other ice formations are also there which represent Parvati and Ganesh. There is a mention of the cave in the puranas as well. Another story says that in ancient times the valley of Kashmir was under water forming a big lake. Kashyap

Rishi drained the water out through a number of rivulets to make the valley habitable. In those days, Bhrigu Rishi came to the valley to visit the Himalayas and he was the first to discover the cave. According to yet another legend, it was a Kashmiri Muslim shepherd, Buta Malik, who while grazing his cattle in the area re-discovered the cave. The Malik family continues to get a share of the offerings at the cave even now. In his Chronicle of Kashmir, a sequel to Kalhana’s Rajtarangni, Jonaraja says that Sultan Zainu’l-abidin (1420– 1470) paid a visit to Amarnath while constructing a canal on the left bank of the river Lidder. The pilgrimage has been of particular importance for the people of Kashmir. It has

deepened the bonds of brotherhood among the Hindus and Muslims living in the valley for ages. Though it is a Hindu pilgrimage, Muslims have been providing necessary services to the pilgrims, in keeping with the rich secular traditions of the place. These include provision of ponies and Pithoos (palanquins for carrying the old and the sick). Only a few years ago, Muslims of Anantnag area provided shelter in their homes to hundreds of pilgrims when they were caught in bad weather. Despite the militant attack at Pahalgam in 2006, there has been no let up in the Yatra. In fact the number of yatris has been ever growing. The pilgrimage stands out as a symbol of Hindu Muslim unity in the valley.

MUNNAR

Anytime of the year

I

t was the Scottish planters who ‘discovered’ Munnar in the early 1800s. They found the hills of Munnar had many things common with the Scottish Highlands. But it was the British, who ruled India, turned it into one of southern India’s most important centers for the cultivation of tea, coffee and spices. They also made it their summer hideout because of the cooler climate and the scenic beauty. Munnar still has the remnants of this colonial past in the form of old bungalows and church buildings. After the British had left India, Munnar remained a sleepy little hill town attracting tourists only occasionally. Visitors come to the town during the kurinji flowering season. Kurinji flowers bloom once in 12 years and cover the top hills in blue. That was the only ‘event’ that attracted travellers to Munnar. All that changed during the last decade of the last century. All of a sudden it became one of the ‘must visit places’ in the national and international circuit. With its vast expanses of tea plantations, colonial bungalows, rivulets, waterfalls and cool weather Munnar contributed to Kerala’s popularity as a travel destination among domestic and foreign travellers. The state government declared it a tourist spot in year 2000. A decade down the line Munnar is now looked upon as a round the year destination. Situated at an altitude of 1600 m above sea level, with bracing climate and laidback atmosphere Munnar is an ideal summer get away. But this hill station changes magically during monsoon and winter and puts on different garbs to attract visitors. Rain in the hills replenishes rivulets and waterfalls. The greenery will look so fresh with the dust and dirt washed away by rain water. One can watch the dark clouds gathering over distant horizon heralding the next rain. During winter the rolling hills will be shrouded in blankets of mist. The day time temperature will fall to chilly levels and evenings and nights become darker and ‘mist-erious’. If your idea about vacationing is spending time doing nothing, winter is the time and Munnar is the place. Munnar, with the mountain streams, valleys and tea plantations offers a great variety of choices to the tourists.

MUNNAR

The allure of three rivers

D

eriving its name from the confluence of three rivers, Muthriappuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly, Munnar is a place that can steal a tourist’s heart right away. The magnetism of the place lies in its many attractions that stand to justify why Kerala is considered to be a heavenly place. With time, Munnar has come to be identified as a place of extraordinary scenic beauty. The images of its lush green tea gardens are difficult to separate from the imagination of anybody who would want to visit the place. There are around 30 tea estates in the area which also includes a tea museum started by the Tata Tea at the Nallathanni estate. In the quiet serene beauty of the place, there can also be found glimmers of wildlife and adventure. The Eravikulam National Park houses several species of rare flora and fauna, the most famous of them being the

24

engendered Nilgiri Tahr. The Park is also known for adventure sports like trekking. Also, situated just 13 kilometers from Munnar is the Anamudi peak which is the highest mountain in Kerala. This makes the journey of an adventure traveller much more exciting. Top Station which is located 27 kilometers from Munnar and is at a height of 1700m above sea level is another place of interest. Tourists often get awed by the breath taking panoramic view that it offers of the neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Echo Point which is on the way has some of the nature’s most amazing tricks at play. Mattupetty which also falls enroute to Top Station is an ideal picnic spot and is known for the dam and lake. The place offers boat rides and serves as a perfect hide-out from the ever buzzing city life. It helps the travellers to relax their mind, body and soul and gives them memories that would linger on for a very long time.

MUNNAR Deshadan has been offering the perfect holiday experience since inception, because at Deshadan hospitality is more than just good stay, cuisine and leisure. It’s the fine art of treating guests to a treasure trove of memorable moments. Deshadan came into being in 2000 with Deshadan Tours and Travels which promoted outbound tourism to Maldives and Srilanka. The success and recognition that came in a span of just 4 years prompted Deshadan to foray into resorts resulting in establishment of Deshadan Mountain Resort, Kerala’s highest mountain resort in Munnar in the year 2004. One year later in 2005, Chettinadu Mansion, the heritage palace of the erstwhile Chettiyars was opened to offer a privileged and gracious retreat. This was followed by the opening of a beach resort, Deshadan Cliff & Beach Resort in the picturesque Varkala and a houseboat division in paradisiacal Alappuzha in 2008. The year 2010 saw Deshadan opening two excellent holiday options, Deshadan Plaza, Cochin , a business hotel and Chettinadu Court, a village resort in Chettinadu. With a penchant for personalized care and supreme value for money, Deshadan continues its journey of offering the most-sought after holiday experience in a range of exotic locations. EXPERIENCE

Beer, bagels, rockets and two British boys When Oscar Rousseau decided to spend three months in a kibbutz in Israel, he was looking forward to a quiet and peaceful time. But he got more than he had bargained for.

S

o... this is a normal morning breakfast for volunteers here at Holit? inquests my equally bemused partner in crime, Ben Dunne. As our kibbutznik comrade takes a gargantuan mouthful of fresh bagel, bulging with hummus and cottage cheese, we are duly informed that – of all the 270 listed kibbutzim in Israel – ours is the only one that retains the tradition of consuming Goldstar beer with breakfast. Splendid, we think, as we wet our whiskers on Zion’s homebrew. A kibbutz is community agricultural settlement in Israel, habitually in a rural location. The ‘members’ of which are known as kibbutzniks. All property on the kibbutz is owned by the community and all income generated is shared by the kibbutz. Many kibbutzim have factories that produce anything from plastics to fruit juicers. Meals are prepared in a community kitchen and eaten in a common dining room. Before travelling to Israel, volunteering on a kibbutz conjured up a fragmented cluster of images, based on what life would be like for the next three months. I could not ascertain if the kibbutzim’s ideology was anything near a match made in heaven with my own beliefs, and I continued to question myself on why I was travelling to a place notorious for its ‘anything you can do, I can do bigger’ military mentality. However, I embarked on the

44

adventure and... the rest is history. The kibbutz I called home for next three months, Holit, was one of, if not the, smallest Oscar Rousseau kibbutz in all of Israel. We arrived there on one of many sweltering, sweaty and splendid days, full of anticipation, enthusiasm and a slither of angst. Not only was our kibbutzim one of the smallest, it was also the closest to the Gaza Strip. Literally, you could walk down our desert road and on your righthand side you would see Israel and on your left, you could quite clearly distinguish Gaza and the Sufa Crossing. Members of our kibbutz did not hesitate to show Ben and I their houses, which had been scared by shrapnel, some of which badly damaged from the Hamas rockets, which were regularly fired over, aimed at the city of Beersheba some 40 km away. It was a frightful experience, at times, settling in. Like clockwork, rockets would be fired by both parties - shaking the window frames of the house we lived in, and for the first week I had to sleep in a bomb shelter as the shelling was quite recurrent. Life as a volunteer has been the happiest time of my life! It was the first

time in my eighteen years of existence, that I finally had a bona fide taste of independence and life away from education, family, work and future prospecting. It was just my best friend and I, getting lost in the thrills of being part of an entirely different culture, society and religion. As the essence of a kibbutz is a centralized, communistically-contained society, all volunteers have allocated jobs

to help with the remuneration and general wellbeing of the community. Predominantly, I envisaged these tasks to be quite trauma-free and nonchalant; perhaps, I would try my hand at cooking or work on my cameral tan, outside, in the many carefully-tended gardens. I never for a minute thought I would be sent out into the Negev desert, to dig four five-foot ditches; where we would have to lay lengths and lengths of carbon steel piping down to feed water to the vegetation that would be impossible to cultivate without this technology. The work was extremely tough at times, especially when we were working in temperatures of up to 45 degrees. But, on a whole, the irrigation project proved to be a worthwhile and fantastic experience. After our irrigation project was complete, we were relocated to the

EXPERIENCE mango groves for several weeks and then onto the kitchen: so in the end I did get to try my hand at preparing some Israeli cuisine and was able to add Shakshuka and Falafel to my slowly growing culinary repertoire. What I found most appealing about Israel, was how beautiful the hybridization of Mediterranean

and Middle Eastern cultures appeared to be. Tel Aviv beach was, and of course still is, gorgeous, with its year-round

ASIAN TRAVELLER

warm azure blue waters, set against a backdrop of nightclubs, chic bars and quaint little markets, with hole-in-wall vendors selling fresh hummus and shawarmas. Any trip to Israel would be pretty much worthless if you do not amble along into Jerusalem, or as many call it the ‘abode of peace’ – somewhat of an oxymoron. Visiting the Western Wall had a very profound impact on both Ben and I. We met a Rabbi there, whose name was Yose Ben Yoezer, a stupendous man with a magnificent beard, who gave us an exciting tour through the tunnels that ran between the Temple Mount and the old city. The three months living in the beautiful, palm tree-fringed kibbutz seemed to whiz by, and came about all too abruptly. It was up until then, the best time of my life. I have made friends who came from places like Africa, Canada, USA, Australia and Belgium, and of course a multitude from Israel, all of whom, I remain in contact with nearly

a year later. The experience that I took away from Israel has had a fundamental impact on me and has changed the very fabric of the person I am today in a way you can only attain by jumping on the next jet and heading to the holy land.
