Christmas has come early for the LPGA Tour. The world’s top women’s professional golf tour has just upped the ante on prize money for 2023 and in one fell swoop, it has created history by hitting a new record of US$101.4 million!
There can be no denying that 2022 will go down in golf’s annals as perhaps one of the most tumultuous years in the history of the noble game. Amidst all of the disruption that has shook the industry in the past twelve months, caused primarily by the arrival of the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Golf, there was something to celebrate the end of a season marked by gripes, name-calling and scandalous and sometimes libellous allegations. The cause for celebrations came via two of the games best loved players – Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko. Both these players have thrilled and commanded the respect of golfers the world over since their teenage days and the excitement that they have generated continues unabated.

I have spoken at all major international conferences on golf, and nothing comes close to APGS for quality of speakers, content, slick staging and production, food and most importantly for setting a mood and ambience that is excellent for trade networking. And the Awards programme, it’s unmatched anywhere for its grandeur, pomp and glorious sense of celebration – simply the best there is!

APGS 2022 – The Great Come-Back-Kid!
After a two-year hiatus caused by the global pandemic, the 2022 Asia Pacific Golf Summit (APGS) roared back with a big budget production which received rave reviews from all who attended its return. It had a cast of world class speakers and an engaging and engrossing three-day programme that was staged under the theme – DYNAMIC NEW VISTAS!

orld renowned golf guru, author and golf personality extraordinaire Andrew Wood in describing APGS 2022 said, “I have spoken at all major international conferences on golf, and nothing comes close to APGS for quality of speakers, content, slick staging and production, food and most importantly for setting a mood and ambience that is excellent for trade networking.” He continued: “And the Awards programme, it’s unmatched anywhere for its grandeur, pomp and glorious sense of celebration – simply the best there is!”
Wood’s appraisal of APGS was widely endorse by the majority of delegates who attended the three-day summit.
The keynote speaker at APGS 2022 was David Abeles, President and CEO of TaylorMade Golf.
Abeles set a distinct tone of positivity in a “fireside”
chat that was conducted by Mike Sebastian, the Publisher of ASIAN GOLF and the executive producer of APGS 2022.
When asked for his assessment of golf on a global scale, Abeles used one word to describe what’s ahead for the future. And that one word is “golfamistic” implying that golf is in a right place and that it is poised for exponential growth going forward.
The general optimism for the future of golf, according to Abeles is attributable to a “multi-generational” demographic mix playing the game which includes the large global population base of Gen X, Gen Y and Millennials who are taking up golf including a sharp rise in the number of women and juniors picking up the game.
Combined with this trend is the growth of virtual and simulation golf which is experiencing great demand in the golf marketplace.

APGS 2022 was laser focused on new and emerging trends on how the multi-billion golf industry is poised to lead the thrust towards sustainability right across the board.

APGS honoured Wilson Golf with a special Centennial Award as the longest established golf brand still in business after 108 years and the holder of the record for having won 62 Majors – the greatest number of Majors won by any golf brand.
“We are indeed honoured to be the recipient of this special award and it will serve to inspire Wilson Golf to strive forward to reinforce this wonderful record in the years to come,” said Tim Clarke, President and CEO of Wilson Golf.
The common thread throughout the second day of APGS 2022 was laser focused on new and emerging trends on how the multi-billion golf industry is poised to lead the thrust towards sustainability right across the board.

Put succinctly, the mantra was all about reduce, reduce, reduce and save, save, save.
The tone for the exciting new mindset was set by a man who is leading the thrust for change - Andy Johnston, General Manager of Singapore’s world class Sentosa Golf Club.
Johnston who is a well-rounded professional in the business tackled the topic of Sustainability – a much talked about buzz word but not something that is really practiced by the golf course industry at large in Asia.
Johnston provided an easy-to-understand pathway for golf courses to adopt and implement – it was a remarkable help guide to the 101 on golf course sustainability.

An incredibly informative summit for both clubs and businesses. To include management, tech, turf solutions and equipment all in one place, made it very worthwhile. Being able to present our company to the group was a fantastic opportunity. Not only did we educate people on tech in the Asia golf market, we also were able to introduce them to our product, one which will have a big impact in the region. The awards evening was a great end to the entire summit. It was a short but punchy awards evening and everyone had a great time - and the food was off the charts delicious.

THE TURF FARM TOUR HOSTED BY SUSTAINABLE TURF FARMS WAS A FIRST-OF-KIND STAGED IN ASIA WHERE DELEGATES WERE INTRODUCED TO A WIDE VARIETY OF NEW HYBRID TURF GRASS.
One of the highpoints of APGS 2022 was the staging of a full-scale golf agronomy and machinery trade show.
This was something special because various companies were on hand to demonstrate the working prowess of their machines, and it was all conducted via “live” demonstrations on actual turf in an outdoor setting.
This unique show-and-tell event was held at Sustainable Turf Farms’ 160,000 square metre facility in
Hoi An, Vietnam. Sustainable Turf Farms operates two of the largest turf farms in the region – one in Vietnam and the other in Thailand and both facilities are fully certified by the International Turfgrass Genetic Assurance Programme (ITGAP), a quality assurance programme that monitors production sites worldwide to ensure that the turf grown conforms to the stringent standards of the programme.
Thank you once again for hosting the largest world class Golf Industry Event in Asia. The value we get from attending and being able to network with our Industry peers, as well as learning from the broad range of speakers from all over the world is priceless. Every time golf equipment manufacturers release new products, you can bet your bottom dollar that they have some incredibly unique and special feature to offer golfers. It is always an improvement on a generation of clubs before and without doubt, the new arrivals always come with a baggage load of bragging rights. In keeping with this industry norm, a whole new bunch of clubs have just arrived from PING Golf, a brand known for its conservatism when it comes to the use of superlatives to describe its products and the performance. However, the brand that was launched by one of the most inventive names in the business, Karsten Solheim, seems to have broken away from tradition and has launched its latest family of golf clubs with some bold claims. Claims of being able to generate great power, speed and distance. And shortly after the new clubs were launched, its top brand ambassador, American Tony Finau put the clubs in his bag and went out to win the 2022 Cadence Bank of Houston Open. The best measure of a new family of golf clubs is gaining victory at the highest level just after its launch and this is precisely what happened when Finau went on to win his fifth PGA Tour victory! This makes one wonder if the G430 family is the ULTIMATE PACKAGE? It most certainly unlocks more speed and distance through engineering innovations like Carbonfly Wrap without sacrificing its industry-leading forgiveness!

ASIAN GOLF is proud to provide a detailed review of PING’s G430 clubs which is quite an impressive arsenal of game changing clubs.
“The combined distance gains throughout the entire G430 family are like nothing we’ve seen from one generation of clubs to the next,” said John K. Solheim, PING CEO and President.
“Our approach with G430 has been to find more speed and deliver it in a way that contributes to lower scores and more enjoyment on the course. That includes providing a level of forgiveness that remains unequalled. The powerful combination of distance and forgiveness wins out when golfers are properly fitted. We see that every day in our research and we’re excited to get the G430 into the hands of golfers so they can see the same benefits.”
“The tour adoption the first week out was exceptional, with almost 30 drivers in play on the PGA Tour. Our staff appreciates the added ball speed of the driver and fairway woods and loves the sound. They are seeing from 2 to 4 mph gains in ball speed from the driver, which even the best players in the world are happy to find from their equipment alone,” Solheim explained.
The stand-out feature of the G430 family are the three driver models (MAX, LST, SFT), three fairway wood designs (MAX, LST, SFT) in multiple lofts, six hybrid choices and an iron set (4-9, PW, 45.5°, 50°, 54°, 58°).
In the new drivers, PING’s engineering team developed several new technologies common to all three models while applying specific advancements to each individual head, producing measurable ball-speed gains while improving sound throughout the series. The added ball speed is attributed to a shallower and thinner VFT forged face design engineered with Spinsistency, a variable roll radius technology proven on the G425 fairway woods and hybrids. The improved and pleasing sound is the result of fine-tuning the frequencies of the head through a new internal rib structure.
The “super-big-boy” is “The MAX (460cc)”

the most forgiving and fits the widest range of golfers. A 25gram, high-density tungsten moveable backweight influences shot shape ±8 yards between the Draw, Neutral and Fade settings.
“The MAX is the workhorse,” Solheim said. “It fits every skill level, from tour players to higher handicaps. The increases in ball speed are remarkable and the sound is creating a very favorable conversation. When you combine those advancements with its industry-leading forgiveness, the MAX will win a lot of battles in comparison testing in the fitting environment.”
Next on deck is the LST (Low Spin Technology) driver. It features PING’s exclusive Carbonfly Wrap, a lightweight composite that covers the crown and wraps into the heel/toe sections of the skirt to save weight and lower the CG for more ball speed, less spin and higher MOI. The 8-layer, one-piece composite saves four grams and weighs 11.5g fully installed. A moveable 22-gram, high-density tungsten backweight influences shot shape ±7 yards between the Draw, Neutral and Fade settings. At 440cc, the smaller tour-style LST is available in 9° and 10.5° lofts (adjustable ±1.5° and lie up to 3° flat from standard) and best fits faster swing speeds.

“Our SFT technology reinforces our commitment to custom fitting,” Solheim said. “It’s a tremendous option for golfers who consistently slice the ball. The reality is more golfers could benefit from this type of technology, so we’ve added the two-setting backweight to allow for further adjustments in shot bend as necessary.”
From the G430 drivers, we turn to the G430 fairway woods. Again, PING has used its Carbonfly Wrap to deliver more distance by positioning the CG closer to the force line to maximize ball speed, resulting in higher, longer carries, whether fit for the MAX, SFT or LST model. The lightweight composite crown wraps into the heel and toe sections of the skirt, creating weight savings of 10 grams which are reallocated to achieve the lower the CG and increase ball speed. The composite also plays a role in the pleasing sound. A tungsten backweight extends the perimeter weighting to ensure forgiveness.
Two proven technologies from the previous generation carry over and contribute to distance gains and spin consistency across the clubface. With FaceWrap Technology, a variable-thickness, high-strength maraging steel face wraps into the sole and crown of the stainless-steel head, generating more flexing for faster ball speed and higher launch for greater distance. The variable
roll radius of Spinsistency improves performance across the face (especially on thin shots) by reducing spin to increase ball speed from the maraging steel face.
Each of the models is engineered to help produce added distance and forgiveness for a variety of skill levels.
The MAX fits the widest range of golfers with four options (3W/15°, 5W/18°, 7W/21°, 9W/24°), while the SFT is offered in three heads (3W/16°, 5W/19°, 7W/22°) with lighter swing weights to help square the face at impact. The tour-style LST (3W/15°) best fits faster swing speeds. Trajectory Tuning 2.0 provides eight hosel positions, adjusting for loft (±1.5°) and lie (up to 3° flatter than std.).
The LST 3-wood’s multi-material design combines a 2041 Beta-Ti face, Ti 8-1-1 body, and 80-gram tungsten sole plate to position the CG low/back for faster ball speed with reduced spin, producing on average seven yards more distance.
From fairway woods to hybrids. The new G430 hybrids are loaded with innovations like Carbonfly Wrap, which is the key to more distance and green-holding stopping power. Alongside proven technologies Facewrap Technology and Spinsistency, they deliver the speed and performance golfers need to take on any approach shot. With six loft options (2H/17°, 3H/19°, 4H/22°, 5H/26°, 6H/30°.

“The popularity of our hybrids continues to grow,” said Solheim. “They’ve quietly become one of our most successful categories. They’ve earned a reputation as easy-to-hit, reliable gapping solutions to mid and long irons known mainly for their forgiveness. With the added distance golfers will now enjoy from the G430 hybrids, it’s one more reason to get fit for a PING hybrid.”
Finally, the G430 irons - the multi-material irons produce distance gains of approximately 7 to 10 yards and improved accuracy throughout the set. It’s the result of a complex design that combines a lower CG with stronger, custom- engineered lofts and a thinner face that delivers up to 2 more mph of ball speed – leading to significant distance gains without compromising PING’s famous forgiveness.
A key contributor to the added distance is the PurFlex cavity badge, an innovation with seven flex zones that allow more free bending to increase ball speed across the face. In combination with a lower CG, the badge contributes to the solid feel and pleasing impact sound. The stronger lofts across the set resulted in the addition of a 41° PW to ensure proper gapping options and allowed for standard lofts in the
from their irons like forgiveness, stopping power and gapping alternatives is one of the most impressive engineering stories throughout the entire G430 line,” said Solheim. “We know golfers want more distance from their irons but distance without control doesn’t lead to lower scores. That’s why we put so much emphasis on designing an iron that not only goes a very long way, but it flies higher, straighter and lands softer.”
Among the refinements to the overall shape is a shorter hosel, which creates a more compact, clean look and helps lower the CG, aligning it closer to the force line to increase ball speed and ensure solid impact, especially low on the face. Approximately 1° of additional bounce throughout the set provides clean turf interaction and pure strikes, minimizing “heavy” shots that come up short. The high-density tungsten

If you’ve not heard about it, you’ve heard it now! It’s a lot more than just installing technology. It’s a formula that creates a dedicated customer base that comes more often, stays longer, and spends more. And it’s called Inrange Golf – a fabulous new experience in how golf is played and enjoyed. It’s an Experience Range!
Inrange Golf has made a triumphant entry into Asia with its first installation at The Range @ Damai Indah PIK, a sprawling complex in Jakarta, Indonesia, made up of a 3-tier driving range, 18-hole mini golf course and equipment and apparel stores set amongst some trendy and tasty restaurants.
Across the way is a Robert Trent Jones III designed golf course too. The Range has only been open for just over a month, it is already becoming the place to be for golfers and entertainment seekers alike.
Day time hours have a steady flow of golfers coming through the door - looking for an enhanced practice experience. And in the evening and on weekends, the typical customer is a group of young and fun entertainment seekers who now see the range as a great alternative to the cinema, bowling alley or karaoke bar.
And The Range is able to serve both these clients seamlessly through the adoption of one of the leading ball tracking and range software products on the market, Inrange Golf.
The Inrange methodology is set out to ensure driving ranges can offer golf, for everyone. There is no argument that the range space has already ‘gone digital’ however choosing the right partner can make all the difference.

The minister of Indonesia tourism attended the grand opening of this site, and the tourism board has already been back to do a site visit and write up on the venue. Large corporates have contacted the venue for December End Of Year events already and a 2023 competition calendar is currently in the works for their players. It’s exciting times for golf in Indonesia, that’s for sure.

GOLF’S HEROES!
SPECIAL FEATURE

It means a lot. It’s been seven years since I’ve last done it. I’ve won three FedEx Cups since I last won… I’ve been able to win this tour’s rankings and finish the year as world No. 1, but to do it in America as well, yeah, it’s very cool. I keep saying that I’ve been a pro now for over 15 years, and to still try to figure out ways to try to accomplish new things, that’s what keeps me coming back.
The end of 2022 witnessed McIlroy stamping his name in golf’s history books as the man who finished fourth at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship to become European Number One claiming the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth time in his career, following his titles in 2012, 2014, and 2015.
– RORY MCILROY
McIlroy played 40 rounds on the DP World Tour in 2022 with a stroke average of 68.75, the best since records began. On the PGA TOUR in 2022, Rory had a stroke average of 68.67, the best on tour since Tiger Woods in 2009.
Rory has now become European Number One, World Number One, and FedExCup Champion at the same point for the first time in his career. Commenting on his success,

McIlroy emulated Henrik Stenson, the only other golfer to win the FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai in the same season in 2013.
While McIlroy created history, his counterpart on the LPGA Tour also made sure that golf’s historians did not miss out on her achievements. New Zealand’s one-time child prodigy, Lydia Ko claimed the LPGA’s season-ending Tour Championship in grand style.
The former world number one held her nerve with a final-round 2-under-par 70 to finish two shots clear to clinch
player-of-the-year honours and also the biggest cheque in women’s golf history. Ko’s US$2 million pay day took her season earnings to US$4,364,403 leaving the New Zealander to also win the season-long money list.
With three victories, plus nine additional top 5s in 2022, the former teenage superstar also posted her first multiple-win season since 2016 to edge ever closer to a seemingly inevitable place in the LPGA Hall of Fame.
Still, Ko headed for the off-season with plans to get married feeling blissfully content as world No.2.
“This is my last tournament as a single lady,” she said with a laugh at the trophy presentation.
All that is left is for ASIAN GOLF to wish these two grand ambassadors of golf continued success in 2023.

SPECIAL FEATURE LADIES
Christmas has come early for the LPGA Tour. The world’s top women’s professional golf tour has just upped the ante on prize money for 2023 and in one fell swoop, it has created history by hitting a new record of US$101.4 million!

his huge financial bonanza will cover a total of 33 events across 12 countries in the new season.
According to sources, the combined purses are more than double what was paid out on the tour just a decade ago.
“Because of our athletes, partners, volunteers and incredible fans, 2023 will be a banner year,” said LPGA Tour commissioner Mollie Marcoux.
“Our athletes are playing for more total prize money than any time in history, and we have over 500 hours of broadcast television.” The total prize pot is up US$8m in 2022, with at least US$1.5m on offer at every tournament.
WONDER WHY? Could this beefing up in prize monies be due to possible inroads being made into the women’s game by Greg Norman and his deep-pocketed LIV Golf?

It was not too long ago, that Norman aka “The Great White Shark” was reported saying that the women’s game is “at the forefront of my mind” but appeared to pour cold water on the potential of striking a deal with the LPGA anytime soon.
On checking the archives, Norman previously suggested that LIV had reached out to the LPGA Tour many months ago. But this was flat out denied by LPGA Tour commissioner Mollie Marcoux who went on to add that she would engage in a conversation with Norman.
She is reported to have told GOLFWEEK that “It’s my responsibility to evaluate every opportunity.” She explained: “I would engage in a conversation if it would achieve our aim of promoting women’s golf, but there needs to be input from
players and sponsors. There’s a lot of factors to consider before we do business with.”
What do some of the LPGA players think? Veteran LPGA Tour winner Christie Kerr was quoted as saying “almost the entire [LPGA] tour” would make the jump to LIV Golf if they were put in a similar position to the men’s game because of the vast differences in prize purses on offer.
It must be noted that Saudi oil company Aramco already sponsors six events on the Ladies European Tour.
