In the numerous demands of architecture, none is more persistent than that which calls for different conditions within which we live. The sharp undiluted light of the Gulf and its deep glare are the defining architectural features in the architecture. Light sharpened, light diffused, light muted, and obliterated, the future house in the desert is an expression of unusual contradictions and possibilities. The house is defined by two surfaces — 1) The hard immovable shell, the casing of
desen family life, and — 2) the soft changeable screen, the light
transitory filter that moves outside. The Screen House is so-called
because its perimeter is defined by screens that move according to
season and time of day. The design is thus a kinetic dynamic future
that encases a traditional static building. It is here in the possibilities
of its multiple alterations that architecture becomes both, an element
of visual performance, as well as a graded device for climatic control.
