Key Problem
A stammer affects the fluency of speech, but that is just the tip of the ice berg. The wider physiological affects of a stammer are invisible and can take over someones life.

My Answer
‘Speech Bubble’ is a way to help people visualise their stammer. When a new users sign up they start of as a new ‘Speech Bubble’ character. The simple design is explained below.

The main body is a speech bubble.
The eyes are speech marks.
Speech Bubble has a mouth just like you.
The arms and leg makes Speech Bubble feel more alive.
How it Works
The brief was to find a way to get people to engage with their stammer in order to help them come to terms with it. Speech Bubble achieves this by offering people a way to visualise their stammer, then be able to share it and talk about it.

Reflection Process
Users reflect by answering questions about their speech and how the contributing factors such as their emotions, confidence and self esteem has affected them. This generate them a Speech Bubble.
Key Benefits
In the ‘Time Line’ feature users can see their ‘Speech Bubble’ and see how the app has helped them on micro or macro scale. There are 2520 different of Speech Bubbles so everyone can have a unique ‘Time Line’ but also be able to find users like themselves.

Development of Speech Bubble As someone who has and still suffers from a stammer I know that speech is just at the tip of the iceberg. I wanted to research the hidden world of a stammer. After gathering many insights I wrote myself a brief, which resulted in the design of ‘Speech Bubble’.

02 Analyse Research
I synthesised my research and narrowed down my findings to 3 key insights. This formed the basis for my initial design brief. Key Insight Stammers can be overcome providing the correct techniques are combined with self confidence and self motivation.
Key Insight People who stammer believe everyone is against them. However people that don’t stammer want to help but don’t know how. There is a disconnect between the two.

03 Explore Initial Brief
Once the initial design brief was identified, the next step was to explore how the imagination of someone who stammers works. This was done by working alongside people who stammer and therapists.

Through collaboration with therapists I found that stammering isn’t just about speech. It’s more about the individuals contributing factors such as their confidence, how they are feeling and the fear which causes them to hold back. 08 Initial Design
These were the initial steps taken to design a character to best represent a stammer.
1) Identify the characters’ characteristics.
2) Ask people to visualise how a character could represent these characteristics.
3) Choose inspiration- Letters and glyphs.

I took the simplified questions forward and explored how a character could best represent them. Throughout this process I seeked industry advice which I gained from an animator, an illustrator, and a graphic designer.

The brief was to design a portable speaker which also supplies the highest achievable sound rendition. I designed two speakers that would suit the lifestyle of a target consumer. I felt the speakers should be able to accompany someone going to work as well as going on a holiday.

The ATM Experience I set myself a UI/UX challenge to re-think the brand communication of Natwest, whom I bank with. I analysed their most common access point, their ATM and visualised how they could make them more friendly.
