FIRE SAFETY Behind your guest room door, you will find a floor plan of the guest room corridor on which your guest room is located. Please study it carefully and then take a moment to walk this corridor and familiarize yourself with it. Take special notice of the number of doors to reach the exit and which direction to turn, as the corridor may have smoke in it making it nearly impossible to identify the exit door from any other door in that area. Also, note the location of the fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull boxes and the automatic closing fire/smoke doors. Please acquaint yourself with the following procedures. They will help you in the unlikely event of an emergency: •

Pre-plan your escape route. Locate and check out both the nearest exit door and the stairwell. Count the guest room doors between your room and the exit. Remember, the balcony may also be used as an exit. • Know where you placed your guest room key. You will need your key in the event that you wish to re-enter your room during an emergency. Get in the habit of leaving your key in the same place, preferably on the night stand. • If you discover smoke or fire: 1. Call the Front Desk immediately. 2. Feel the door. If it’s hot, don’t open it. 3. If the door is not hot, place your foot against the door and open it slightly. 4. Look and smell for smoke and odors. Remember, you may be able to exit the stairwell by crawling. There is always less smoke near the floor. 5. Leave your room and close your door. 6. If you are able, pull the nearest fire alarm box.

7. Don’t use elevators. Use exit stairways or fire escapes. 8. Don’t panic! If you see no fire or smoke in the corridor, head to the nearest fire exit and proceed to ground level and out of the building. 9. If the halls are too smoky, stay in your room. a. Fill the bathtub with water; however, never get into the tub. b. Stuff towels in all openings and around all doors. Use wet tissue to insulate small openings. c. Wet down anything that is hot, such as doors and walls. d. Open glass doors only at intervals for fresh air. If smoke becomes dense, stick your head out of the door or window. e. Await help from the fire department.

TORNADO PROCEDURES If you observe a tornado or hear the warning sirens for a tornado, take the following steps immediately: • • •

Find Shelter! Go to the basement or a place that is on the lowest floor in the middle of the Lodge, like an interior hall. Avoid windows and doors. Move away from outside walls and stay clear of windows, doors and other glass. Protect your head. Try to take shelter under something strong that can protect your head, like a heavy table or a workbench. At the very least, use your arms and hands to protect your head.

• • •

Stay put until either the threat passes or you are advised that it is all clear. If damage has occurred, remain away from these areas until they are declared clear by emergency personnel. Keep away from exposed wires. If you are caught in your room with no time to get out, go into the bathroom, close the door and sit on the floor or in the tub.

In accordance with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, we provide a “smoke free” environment to park guests.

MAUMEE BAY STATE PARK MAP

9

PARK HISTORY Maumee Bay State Park is a tribute to Lake Erie. This precious gift is one of the largest bodies of fresh water in the world, and it reflects the diverse natural heritage of Ohio.

was removed. Rock layers had been compressed and their uplift raised the passage to the lake’s level. At the present site of the park, cattail swamps prevail. A narrow strip of prairie grass and weeds edges the cattails and separates them from the looming swamp forest inland. In the autumn, this strip is dry enough to allow passage. A primitive 1834 road map labeled the entire area as impassable.

The history of Lake Erie began with the glacial period known as the Pleistocene. Massive sheets of ice associated with continental glaciers gorged and scoured the bedrock of Ohio. Soft Siberian rock to the north of the state yielded under the pressures created by the mile-thick sheet of ice. Large basins were etched into the bedrock, and rock layers themselves were compressed. At least four major advances of ice entered the state beginning a million years in the past and finally receding a mere 10,000 years ago. Testimony of the ice’s force is found throughout the lake area. Small scratches in the rock surface, known as glacial striations, are common, while major grooves are rare, but awesome.

Ninety percent of Lake Erie’s water comes from the Upper Lakes where precipitation and runoff govern the levels. The lake reached an all-time record high level in 1973 after several years of higher precipitation, and has remained at levels considered above normal. To further compound the situation, northeastern winds pile up as much as six feet of water in the western part of the basin, thus magnifying the high levels. Water then moves back and forth in the basin as it would in a bathtub, creating a large “wave” called a seiche.

As the glaciers receded, meltwaters pounded south of the ice margin. Drainage exits through the St. Lawrence were blocked by ice and a large lake encompassed much of northwestern Ohio. The ancient body of water is known to historians as Lake Maumee.

In the marshes, once part of the old lake bed, the ground surface is so flat it takes very little change in water level to dramatically change the shoreline. A water level rise of just four feet will flood inland two miles if there are no barriers!

Gradually, the northern passage opened and Lake Erie shrank to a size more similar to present. As the waters receded, a large expanse of what was lake bottom became a vast swamp. The Great Black Swamp, noted by the first frontiersman, was 120 miles long and 30 to 40 miles wide, and covered 1,500 square miles. The Indians avoided it and settled only on the well-drained banks of the Maumee River. The southern reaches of the swamp were drained by the Auglaize River.

Acquisition of the park began in 1974 with matching funds from the Land and Water Conservatory Fund. Maumee Bay officially became a state park in 1975. Preservation of this area maintains an integral part of the state’s natural cultural history. Named for the Erie Indians, or Cat People, the lake has long played a role in Ohio’s heritage.

Lake levels rose gradually as the bedrock under the St. Lawrence rebounded after the weight of the ice sheets

Quilter Lodge is named for the park innovator, Barney Quilter, who believed that this area would be a perfect location to create a new concept in Ohio State Parks. Many energy-saving, state-of-the-art mechanical

MAUMEE BAY GOLF COURSE MAUMEE BAY GOLF COURSE is an 18-hole Scottish Links-style championship course located adjacent to Lake Erie. Maumee Bay was designed in 1991 by Arthur Hills and rests on 1,850 acres of protected wetlands inside the Maumee Bay State Park. The golf course plays to a Par 72 and can be played from four different tee boxes ranging from 5,400 yards back to 6,950 yards. It has been rated by Golf Digest as a four-star complex and also has been selected as one of the country’s best golf values. In addition to the golf course, Maumee Bay facilities include a PGA Staffed Pro shop, Snack Bar and fullservice practice facility. The facilities also include a Lodge located on Lake Erie, possibly the best walleye and perch fishing in the country, spacious Cabins and a Marina. The signature hole is #14, a dog-leg right par 5 that ranges from 491 yards back to 525 yards. This hole calls for a perfect tee shot over a lake into a narrow fairway, then a second shot that must find the fairway as water comes into play on both sides. The third shot is the hit into a two-tier narrow green. This hole is the start of a very challenging four-hole stretch that will test the skills of all golfers on all levels.

Golfers from near and far are attracted to this very unique golf course. For the past several years, the first stage of the men’s US Open qualifier has been held at the Maumee Bay Golf Course. A Driving Range and Rental Clubs are also available. For more information call the Pro Shop at 419-836-9009, from any in-house telephone.
