Director’s Note

NOW OPEN

Dear Readers, 2016 is here and optimism is in the air!

THE

With the dawn of a new year that has come to pass, there shall be new opportunities, yet again for designers in Egypt and beyond. But we can never take advantage of such opportunities without one important thing: productivity.

We often ask ourselves about what design’s role is in driving productivity. Sometimes it’s not about changing the worker, but rather changing the working environment to facilitate a more productive workflow. For this reason, Hany Saad’s ingeniously designed headquarters was one of the most eye-catching projects of this issue.

Balancing functionality with an aesthetically appealing design is a challenge that has caught the attention of many experts in the field, leaving them bewildered yet inspired at the same time. This is ultimately what we seek. This issue is sure to perfume your senses with the ultimate essence of stylish elegance and a tad bit more than your usual take on design. Turn the page and let this issue’s inspirational fragrance saturate you to satisfaction. Best Wishes,

MAXIME JACQUET STRIKES AGAIN ON BEVERLY HILLS By Nader Ramadan Photography by Tigran Tovmasyan Images courtesy of Maxime Jacquet Design

It's a tantalizing taste of Louis Vuitton, ABHIKA HOME, LIGNE ROSET, glued together with LOVE from MAXIME.

T

hey don’t call him Hollywood’s ‘bad boy of design’ for nothing! Belgian born designer Maxime Jacquet completes an amazing new residence on Beverly Hills, using a myriad of abstract and psychedelic elements to create a whole new atmosphere for his client. Beverly Hills, being the jet class and most elite among luxury properties in the United States, couldn’t have been a better location to design a residence which will one day become the ‘home sweet home’ for one lucky client. Of course, what could be a better combination? You have on one side of the hottest properties put together with the hottest designer

being decorated with awards “…and honored in the 2014 LCDQLA as one of the most 25 most influential American designers. His first residential project was published by Vogue magazine in 2009,” as one press release speaking on the designer’s behalf stated. As prestigious and reputable as the location and property may be, the furnishings and their use were of equal, if not more, in stature, using jet class brands including vintage chairs by Louis Vuitton artwork, a breathtaking mirror from ABHIKA HOME, a ceiling unit by CALDER, a sofa from by LIGNE ROSET, a vintage cabinet by KNOLL as well as many other of which there are too many to mention. The artwork within the interiors was equally impressive, having a sculpture by Diego Ravanass. It’s really the combination of

all these elements together that really is the art and philosophy of Maxime’s work. You could think of it as thoughtprovoking, perplexing, or simply rulebreaking. The real substance is in the concoction itself. Taking advantage of the wide open space, the living room is an extensively long display of high end furnishings and different creative elements, concocted together to form a platform of social interactivity. Additionally, what is a living room without a little love? A rather intriguing element that was added to the mix was a neon lighting unit that said “And I said I love you” by Tracey Emin.

17

Going deeper inside, you will find even more experimentation with the color palette with bright yellows and curtains being subdued with the calm grey walls in the bedroom. The rooms are also fit with large window for the purpose of letting natural sunlight penetrate the atmosphere. It’s an environment which evokes not only positive emotions but is also stunningly eclectic and electrifying in its very essence!

ABOUT THE DESIGNER It was Maxime’s talent and creativity that got him the name, the fame, and the entire game from Belgium all the way to Beverly Hills. Now the owner of Maxime Jacquet Design, Maxime designs and executes projects for many of America’s most prestigious names such as musical star and DJ David Guetta.

Mr. Maxime may have one name to you, but in the celebrity world he is a man of many names, of which he is most well-known for being America’s “the bad boy of design” according to Elle Décor magazine. He’s also been extensively written about in a number of other reputable publications. “His work is recognized and has been published worldwide in shelter magazines, blogs, and now on television. For such a young designer in the industry, he is thus far, leading a very fortunate career and stays focused on taking it to next level. Maxime Jacquet is currently one of the Judges star in The 2014 AD Trophy Awards Design Competition looking to find the best designer in all Pacific Asia,” said a press statement speaking on his behalf.

It's visually dynamic with a diverse array of wall textures and bright energetic colors.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UNTAMED

Combining the masterpieces of several different designers, Edra is a studio that has proven itself worthy of praise with its newest collection being exemplary of what it means to combine an artful way of living in several different designs. The company made its debut with a chair that is so meaniningful it almost looks like its glass stained. “Almost” is most important to note as Ella by Jacopo Foggini is made out of polycarbonate, taking on a variety of different sculptural shapes so that each chair has its own individual character. Additionally, Absolu and HF by Francesco Binfare are also among the company’s esteemed creations.

The Bow Tie Chair by Gridesign Studio

et another furniture collective has come to our attention, this time it is unique in both form and function. Designers have come up with a new, more organic formula derived from simple geometric forms through which a user can experience a new definition of comfort. The realization that this is possible is not only something should be written about, but something for the next generation of creative thinkers to reflect upon.

Photography by Aloke Chou (CE Photography) Images courtesy of Gridesign Studio

Designed by Lin Chingke, the owner of Gridesign Studio, this laminated bamboo chair lives up to its name being the Bow Tie Chair, not for any tuxedo, rather it is for a tasty interior. It’s advantage lies in its stability as much as its lightweight build. It offers the user both comfort and ventilation.

The QTZ elements are available for purchase in a number of different high quality finishes and is manufactured with stainless steel. Not only is QTZ visually appealing, at least to the naked eye, but it also is a fundamental step forward in creating geometric variants that are both stylish and guarantee comfort.

HANY SAAD

TAKES A STEP INTO THE FUTURE By Nader Ramadan Photography by Nour El Refai Images courtesy of Hany Saad Innovations

L

What you’re looking at it isn’t an office in Silicon Valley, California nor is it some futuristic spectacle from Dubai. It is here in Cairo, designed for Hany Saad Innovations by Arch. Hany Saad himself with the help of many others, to make its mark in the design business, through pioneering the art of technological integration with elegant interior spaces. The new HSI headquarters is quite simply put the new frontier for office design.

24

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

ocated just five minutes from Road 90 Kattameya, it isn’t difficult to find Hany Saad Innovations’ new stateof-the-art headquarters which clearly stands out in the humble residential New Cairo area as an impressively modern spectacle of steel, concrete, and high-tech gadgets to make his new office not only functionally more efficient, but a pure example of how a business can use its own working

space as an effective marketing tool. In essence, it says ‘dress to impress’ all over it only on a larger scale. And as impressive as the structure most certainly is, the organization of the building also helps Arch. Hany Saad manage the diverse services offered by his extensive conglomeration of brands, of which some of them don’t just in architecture but also in other areas such as advertising and even catering. Other

than Hany Saad Innovations, these brands include Plan B Advertising, Global Trading Company, caploonba, design hub, and KuKuRuZa Gourmet Popcorn. All of these diverse departments had to be organized into a headquarters building which could be structured in a way which facilitates an efficient flow of work both within and between all of them.

25

Different departments have different atmospheres. Walking into the spectacularly illuminated space is enough of a technological shock! You're hit with a geometrically impressive front desk and security gates that are lit green, requiring an access card to go through. It was from this impression that one really gets grip on how technologically innovative this office is in automation and security systems. The floor was decorated with an impressively elaborate crystalline pattern that matches with the dynamically designed crystalline steel shape of the front desk. Moving to the waiting room was equally profound, with its elegance being a fantasy of colorful modern furnishing solutions and good music, not to mention its echoing of a modern lounge leisure scheme in all its visual cues. It’s the ideal space for the customer or potential client to await the company’s services in comfort and relaxation. Yet, adding an even more dynamic element is the Color Kinetics screens on the walls provided by Philips which constantly changes colors. Close to the waiting area, clients or customers can be escorted into small colorfully designed meeting rooms to finalize any previously scheduled business dealings.

26

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

Being separated into several floors, the structure is specially equipped to cater the tastes of each and every individual that works in it and even those who temporarily visit the company as potential clients or business collaborators. The structure is fit with two separate elevators fit with touch-sensitive Schindler panels to select the floor you want to go to. One elevator is for visitors and the other is for employees. Each department in the company has its own environment with a certain type of music being played to suite the type of working that’s being done in that particular area. Those working in architectural design department would have a different design layout and type of music in comparison to that of those working in advertising, for example.

27

Equally impressive, if not more, was the break area, fit with everything that the average employee may need to cut loose and regain lost energy to continue a productive work day. Next to the small café area, there is an outdoor area for employees to enjoy fresh air or possibly smoke a cigarette. Finally, above all, the structure’s plan and design

emphasis on advanced security systems to protects its employees who have puts

their own security entrance card granted them access to the company building itself and the individual department they work in.

COLORS CONVERGE WITH THE NATURAL ESSENCE OF THE SPACE.

Productivity is the key force that drives any business forward and with that in mind, Hany Saad devised an ingenious system to help his employees do their job right. He also provided his clients with a real life mockup as to what his company is capable of doing not just for itself but for others. Hany Saad’s new headquarters has successfully raised the bar in the local standards of office architecture and interior design. Not only does his office provide a more than impressive mockup for his potential clients, but it also assists his employees in leading a productive career.

INTO THE IBIS!

ashing in on the lucrative tourism industry that has attracted many from around the world to Ukraine’s beauty and prestige, the ibis Styles Hotel weaves itself into Lviv as a whole new model for hospitality, indulging the country’s guests with a unique and welcoming formula of furnished elegance. Designed by EC-5 Architects from Poland, the ibis Styles Hotel stands out as a landmark accomplishment for the firm of innovative architects.

Among other things, architects may be considered designers but they are also in essence, marketers seeking to translate a corporate concept into a luxurious commodity, made to serve and comfort any guest that seeks to immerse themselves in the pleasures that Ukraine has to offer. The success of this design is in its attention to fine details, using vivid colors and interesting, yet thought-

provoking juxtaposing elements integrating the modern with the classically traditional. A piece of wood can be brought together with modern lamps as well as other vibrant elements. The furnishing used within the hotel serves to bring more energy into the atmosphere, charging it with jubilance and festivity.

Falling deeper and deeper into the abyss may not sound like something as appealing as falling into the luxury dream that every tourist wants to experience, being the ibis Styles Hotel designed by EC-5 Architects. And if you get a hit out of history, then this is the place for you, having an interior design which not only venerates the historical value of the Lviv as a city, but serves to tourists and guest an extra element of comfort and luxury, the Ukrainian way. “Creating the concept of ibis Styles Lviv interiors was a very interesting experience for our whole team. Lviv is a magical city where tradition is mixed

with modernity. This unique blend of what’s new with what’s old as well as the city atmosphere and everyday

lives of its inhabitants became our inspiration. We cannot wait to get to know what the first guests think about the design of the hotel,” said Luiza Jodłowska, architect and owner, EC-5 Architects.

32

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

33

The most important aspect of this eight floor hotel is that it brings the life and culture of Lviv to the guest’s doorstep. One each floor guest can find elements within the design that are inspired by everyday life in Lviv. Pictures of different buildings and historical monuments are on the wallpapers, carpets, and even on the bathroom tiles. “Design is the most important factor that distinguishes ibis Styles hotel chain from our competitors. Each hotel presents a different story of the city it’s located in. This is why we pay so much attention to characteristic, locally designed details and decors. Our brand new hotel that has been opened recently in Lviv was design with all the best the city has to offer in mind. EC-5 Architects perfectly got the ibis Styles

“NORMAL LABOR” BY

DR. FARID FADEL EXHIBITS AT PICASSO ART GALLERY By Nader Ramadan Images courtesy of Dr. Farid Fadel and Picasso Art Gallery

I

t’s all too often that when we hear the word “labor”, our minds are automatically programmed to mentally assign it with a negative connotation, baring a resemblance to the word “slavery”. Images pop up in our minds of chained men, women, and children being starved to the bone, drenched in sweat and forced into doing the most physically strenuous tasks only to be met with a snap of a whip. These erroneous understandings have done a great injustice to the word “labor”, which is the driving force that moves progress forward. Yet, what is the value of a word without that which is worth a thousand words such as a painting or an image? For Dr. Farid Fadel, it doesn’t take just one painting to correct this misunderstanding but a series of paintings to beautify what we know as labor, hence the name of his newest exhibition which took place at Picasso Art Gallery “Normal Labor”. 36

SAINT-GOBAIN GYPROC EGYPT ANNOUNCES The exhibition is a series of paintings which pays tribute to the Egyptians who work hard not only to make ends meet, but to push the country forward. Apart from progress, labor is a part of survival, a concept which was most vocal in the largest piece of the collection, measuring 140 X 110 cm, featuring six men working together to mix cement, sand, and gravel with sea water encroaching on them. For the men, in order to survive, every one of them has to dig their own island. If you want to see the beauty of Dr. Fadel’s work, it’s really in the beauty and value that he gives to the hands that build the country. In Dr. Fadel’s narrative, it is the laborer that is the true hero.

artyn Lawrence Bullard Design completes a dream home in Malibu, the sanctuary of every surfer there is in America. Now, one family says ‘home sweet home’ under sunshine where they can live the life they’ve always dreamed of living, tanning time through and sun-bathing their worries away. Point Dume becomes the ideal habitat as it does become fertile design ground for one design firm!

40

A new addition has been added to Martyn Lawrence Bullard Design’s already impressive portfolio, this time in Point Dume, Malibu, where Martyn Lawrence Bullard himself successfully remodeled a house for one family to settle down in the sun! To begin with, the house had to be torn down and rebuilt into the masterpiece of a mansion that it is today. The client, being a family with three children, leads an active lifestyle, and Bullard especially used their special connection with the area to make the best out of what the project was about to be. “The Sperber residence was a complete remodel. I had worked on a smaller home in Malibu for my clients and their growing family (twin daughters and young son) when they found this house, a bad south western style home built in the late 1980's,” said Bullard. “The end result [was] a beautiful family home that is not only a beach house but also an oasis, fulfilling the California dream of outdoor living at its best. Magnificent tropical plantings with custom designed

outdoor furniture, kitchen, multiple dining areas, multiple lounging spaces with fire pits and water features everywhere reinforce the casual, almost tropical atmosphere of the gardens. The wonderful thing with homes in Malibu is that people can really live out their fantasies and this house certainly allowed me to explore my client’s decorative dreams and make them into a reality, Malibu style!” Aiming for a laid back, relaxing family environment, in accordance with

his client’s preferences, Bullard went around on a global shopping spree, purchasing a myriad of antiques, items from flea markets, vintage pieces, and artworks. Some of the furnishings had to customized just for this project.

43

Grand proportions... relaxed family vibe... “The look is very easy going, with grand proportions but a relaxed family vibe. All the soft furnishings are very deep and comfortable, antiques are mixed with mid-century modern pieces and quirky lighting fixtures around the home add great scale and eccentricity to the overall design,” explained Bullard. “I shopped all over the world for the furnishings

incorporating pieces from the Paris Flea markets, London auction houses, New York mid-century dealers, Indonesian exporters and LA vintage stores and art dealers. Many pieces were custom made for the house also including all the outdoor soft furnishings.” Architects will always be architects, but they will also always be parents

as well. For this reason, Bullard added his own personal touch to the project by interviewing each child in person so that the kids’ rooms can been calibrated to each of their individual preferences.

“For the children's bedrooms I interviewed them to find out their dream rooms. The girls opted for fun colors like bright pink, purples and disco balls whilst the son loves surfing and Hawaii so I added that look to his room, bringing in an artist from Kona to paint the walls with surfing scenes and making furniture from drift woods,” Bullard added. Being a multi-award-winning designer based in Los Angeles, California, Martyn Lawrence Bullard has worked tirelessly for years to gain a prestigious reputation among the finest in the business. His firm has also designed the homes of the America’s biggest celebrities including Tommy Hilfiger, Cher, Ellen Pompeo, Eva Mendes, Edward Norton, Christina Aguilera, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, Kid Rock, Rebecca Romijn, Felicity Huffman and William H Macy, Aaron Sorkin’s. Having his own fill of show biz, he also designed the executive offices of Warner Brothers and Paramount Studios, Patti La Belle, Loree Rodkin, and Cheryl Tiegs among many others.

M

omenti may be Italian, but with its abstract visual rhetoric demonstrated in its new furniture products, the company has also tapped into a more universal language with its raw natural themes and motifs taking on a central role in its production line. “Made In Italy” has a totally different meaning this year with several additions to Momenti’s extensive products family, using raw natural themes to weave themselves into a contemporary interior design setting of ultimate sophistication. Momenti’s not only creates something which boosts its local and international sales significantly, but also serves as a catalyst for the rapid growth of its already widespread awareness. Sometimes it is really a challenge to create something that every brand deserves in today’s market, which is a unique identity that fully encompasses the message that it wants to sends to its customers.

Mountain-Furnishing

Coming to the company’s collections, the key products include metal structured vases, furnishing solutions made out all-natural raw wood from tree trunks, such as tables, mirrors, and poufs. Raw o’natural should not even come close to summarizing what the real nature of these products really are. Universalism is the real ideological mechanism through which designers at Momenti generate their work but

“It is not easy nowadays to orient oneself in a market and an industry in which companies that offer sensational conditions and promise often doubtful experience and quality are proliferating, Momenti’s answer to the market’s evanescence and inaccuracy is to fix clear standards for its creations offering high-quality, unique products, created with the great elegance and taste which characterize the “MADE IN ITALY” product,” it’s said in the company catalog. It’s a seductive statement no doubt!

it’s not as important of course as their emphasis on ensuring the rich quality of the products, especially with the fact that these products are handmade and are given painfully close individual attention.

“The Italian character of our products is always synonymous with a great attention to every single production process, to the choice of materials and to their quality, to the care of details, which is made of great knowledge, experience and

extraordinary technique. Everything is strictly HANDMADE, every single product goes through all realization stages, from ideation to production, in our territory “Romagna”, thus strongly safeguarding a manufacturing sector typical of creativeness and knowhow. To us, maintaining these quality standards means to offer our clients unique collections, exclusive choices and innovative, versatile solutions. For many years, Momenti has focused on efforts and approach on showing people that furniture is no longer simply a commodity. It’s an emotion vehicle through which we can express the way we want people to live. This is the message that one can really take out of this collection!

THE WORLD’S FIRST CÉ LA VI

By Nader Ramadan Images courtesy of AB Concept

Perhaps you could sink your teeth into a light appetizer before hitting the main course! It goes beyond saying that the club lounge is more than just an appetizer being the beating heart of this amazing venue. Fit with a raised VIP sitting space, ‘The Nest’ is at the very center of this club lounge. The space is completed with a beverage area and an antique mirror fit with a backdrop of candles. This club lounge is indulged with a bespoke Tai Ping carpet, ornamented with intricately detailed patterns.

Hong Kong-based interior design firm AB Concept accomplishes an amazing feat through the unveiling of the world’s first CÉ LA VI, a high end restaurant and lounge opened by lifestyle superbrand LVMH as the first venue in Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong.

A

54

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

B Concept turned the words CÉ LA VI from commonly used French phrase into a fine dining restaurant, being the first venue in Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong and launched by lifestyle brand LVMH. Nested on the 25th floor, this restaurant enjoys the panoramic views of the Hong Kong sky lane offering not only a rich cuisine but an authentic environment for a great night out. Nonetheless, what can the jet class among high end restaurants and club lounges do without the elite among designers to make it a reality? This is precisely why AB Concept was chosen to

design CÉ LA VI, and as always, for the team at AB their work is their pleasure. “We’re delighted to have been so instrumental in creating the design DNA for CÉ LA VI’s pioneering first venture,” stated AB Concept’s cofounder Ed Ng, in a press statement. “This was a really fun project. CÉ LA VI pride themselves on knowing how to put on a party and we thoroughly enjoyed interpreting their passion for playfulness and seduction into the design. I think the finished product perfectly combines the sense of escape with the sensuality and intrigue for this iconic new brand.”

And iconic it was, even from the entrance. Visitors upon arrival were met with brand’s catch signature red in the form of a suspended screen, taking its inspiration from Asian temple discs. To top that off, designers manage to contrast this with the sensual red eel-skin frames and raw lava stone, creating an interactively dynamic space. It almost comes to life right in front of your eyes!

“We always believe that projects come alive when given a unique design narrative and with CÉ LA VI

I think we’ve succeeded in showing how we take a space and use it to tell an incredible story,” added Ng in the same statement. “We wanted to create a space that was seductive, intense and passionate - a place that is worthy of representing this superbrand for LVMH - and I think the finished result really speaks to that creative vision.”

55

And now for the main course, being the restaurant. It’s a tropical burst which doesn’t shy out of showing itself off and seducing you even more into its quality fine dining experience with exotic plants, bird feathers, as well as mother-of-pearl plant pots. The space is also indulged with raw-cut wooden tables which were selectively chosen from Bali to match its elegance. Additionally, the most spectacular element in this engaging atmosphere is the ceiling, designed with antique mirrors and custom-made green chandeliers. All in all, the restaurant offers diners a semi-private dining area separated from the remainder of the space with a sheer curtain. And if you’re mood to view culinary action, diners to get watch everything that happens in the open kitchen, bringing an entertaining element into this already pleasant concoction.

56

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

IF YOU'RE IN THE MODD FOR HIGH END NIGHT LIFE, CÉ LA VI IS THE PLACE FOR YOU! Working for years to be the main leader in the East Asia design market, AB Concept is a firm which has produced some of the finest luxury icons ever experienced in the Far East. Established in 1999, AB Concept has had testimonies of success after success with their impeccable taste for what’s stylish and their unique outlook as to what really defines luxury. They are, simply put, the pioneers of pleasure.

LUXURY ON AVENUE DU PRÉSIDENT WILSON By Nader Ramadan Photography by Mathieu Fiol Images courtesy of Gérard Faivre Paris

Gérard Faivre, the artist of grandeur, has struck again in style, creating an artful meaning to yet another Parisian apartment, this time in the prestigious Avenue du Président Wilson. In this interior design, Faivre revolutionizes luxury concepts, adding Parisian cultural elements in the concoction that all together makes an impeccable habitat!

58

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

G

randeur at its greatest is what was witnessed on the ritzy high-end street of Avenue du Président Wilson in Paris, the city of love, as Gérard Faivre uses his innovative thinking to revolutionize luxury concepts in one apartment which was built to foster a close relationship with the city’s heritage. Nested on the fourth floor of the Haussmannian building, the apartment’s location by itself is an exotic element worth envying, situated within close proximity to the Eiffel Tower and having a full panoramic view of this historic monument. From this, Faivre successfully weaves in an interior

scheme which does not only do justice to the historical and economic value of the area but allows its inhabitants to live comfortably to fully experience luxury lifestyle at its best. Starting off with a dramatic atmosphere upon entry, Faivre took imagination to the next level at the entrance by mimicking the same scheme as that of a theater’s stage, in the sense that what lies beyond that point is a visual mystery. Quiet

seeing the Eiffel Tower in more than one inspiration is more than pleasurable. “The floor covering and quaint,

is like a schematic illustration of the Eiffel Tower and the blue or yellow light, depending on mood and desire, glittering from the vertical wall panelling and rippling like a curtain, is a nod to the twinkling Tower at night.”

59

As the story goes, it was the Eiffel Tower that was both protagonist and the hero. It was really the Eiffel Tower that was the protagonist and hero in the Faivre’s narrative. Taking this concept even further, the Tower and other elements work together in the living room an inspirationally charged atmosphere that only adds to the client’s comfort. “Gérard Faivre wished to centerstage the Tower, to infuse the apartment with its daytime and nighttime beauty,” stated a press release speaking on behalf of his firm. “By symphonizing its features, he gives his interior design purpose and substance, sprinkled with conviviality and elegance. The original wooden parquet evokes softness, smoothness, the ledge that borders the walnut-wood windows blends perfectly with the

60

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

elements of the large bookshelves, the partnership with abstract artists adds a touch of color, the photos of the Eiffel Tower, seen from another perspective, enhance the exquisiteness of the interior design and the sculptures stand out by their height.”

Any luxury seeker would envy one last thing, the master bedroom. Seductive and stylish, this space would beat any hotel’s presidential suite. “…the master bedroom corresponds perfectly to the theme and is a wealth of elegance. The bed, facing the window, anticipates the performanceto-come... the daily dazzling evening show and the exceptional once or twice-a-year display of fireworks illuminating the Parisian sky. The female faces that fill Renaud Delorme’s works of art convey the impression of being accomplices to or rivals of

this beauty,” added the press release speaking on behalf of his firm. Paris is a city that tells tales that never end. Yet, with the skill and creativity demonstrated by designers such as Faivre, luxury has been enlightened, reformed, and revamped to a more meaningful artful way of life.

61

About Gérard Faivre Paris

Being the guru of glamor, Gérard Faivre has had to work for years to reach the position and prestige that he has reached up till now, striving to create an artful meaning to luxury as property buyers in Paris begin to demand even more and more of what high end enjoyment has to offer. He is one of few who has turned his job into a lifelong passion.

62

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

“Transforming old apartments into prestigious homes is one of Gerard Faivre’s main talents/ Beyond the decoration, he also chooses electronic equipment and home automation systems with careful attention. For Faivre, the cosmetic appearance is just as important as the practical aspect: an apartment is and should remain, above all else, a place to live,” said a press statement speaking on his behalf. Being the guru of glamor, Faivre in essence seeks to refine the way we live and think of life through an exceptionally unique experience of luxury.

AN ENLIGHTENING ENCOUNTER WITH INTERIOR DESIGNER

NIHAL ZAKI By Diana Farid Images courtesy of Nihal Zaki Interiors

N

ihal Zaki being among the pioneers of the interior design and furnishing market is said to be one of the most elite designers in her field, creating households which adapt well to her high end clients’ individual tastes and lifestyle preferences. ASK Magazine’s Diana Farid sat with Nihal to better understand the realities of her unique interior design philosophy and to unveil the secrets behind her exceptional level of creativity.

66

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

“NIHAL ZAKI, YOUR SHOWROOM IS LIKE WALKING THROUGH A ROCK STAR’S DREAM” You love to mix Gothic and Islamic styles. You also love vivid colors. So if you were to define your passion for interiors to the readers, what would you say? I don’t like to be traditional; I can safely say I create beautiful chaos. I turn the ugly into beautiful and eclecticism for me is about authenticity, hence comes my love for Gothic, oriental and period styles in general. Did studying in UK affect your design preferences or taste by means? I graduated from Inchbald School of Design,London UK in 1999. This definitely inspired me as a designer

and as an artist. My favorite hangouts were Sir John Soan and the V&A museums, where I frequently visited the Pompei room since I was a big fan of the Neo-Classical style. I also loved the Kitsch aspect of London and was always stimulated by their funky-poppunk culture in my work. Seeing these styles and visiting such places affected the way I see and design things. This, along with other inspirations, shaped the designer I am today and mirrors the styles I strive to represent.

67

68

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

We saw the pictures of your showroom; every room mirrors a different world. How did you build that awesome inspiring project? I wanted this showroom to become a destination for interior lovers as well as furniture lovers. I aimed to make a statement of beauty and elegance by creating a hub that caters to all tastes. In this showroom, you will find 100% Egyptian-made furniture lines of bedrooms, dining rooms, sofas, coffee tables and more. I even introduced some fashion accessories items that are collectibles for the super stylish ladies out there. Building this showroom started back in 2009. When I started fantasizing about it, I had every corner laid out in my imagination since then. I am also big on collecting and curating unusual decorative antiques, so over the past 15 years I have been purchasing my precious collection which is now finally on display.

What is the main source of inspiration to your designs and work? Being in the creative industry, you need to be sensitive enough to capture beauty and seek inspiration from everything around you. So I get inspired by everything and anything. My clients are my biggest inspiration for I find it fascinating to meet new people and get introduced to their lives, their needs and tastes and reflect all of that into beautiful / personal interior. Each client is unique in a way which makes each project matchless.

What is the profile of clientele who you have in mind? The best clients are the ones that have been already familiar with my work and portfolio and have complete faith in me. I consider myself lucky to have met many of those clients in my journey so far.

Visiting your showroom would put customers in an unparalleled mood. How are customers finding your designs and what is their reaction so far? The best comment I heard so far was: “Nihal Zaki, your showroom is like walking through a rock star’s dream. Freddie Mercury meets Lady Gaga in a 15th century parlor to talk about the 80s”.

What is the best feedback you have ever received from a client? I find it very rewarding when clients tell me my interiors make them happy. At the end of the day this is what I am striving to do, I am on a mission to create happiness through my designs and talent.

69

My friends do call me

“Tsunami”

to reflect my personal skills rather than my design.

You are called “Tsunami” by your friends for your bold taste of mish mashing different styles all together. Can you describe your taste to the readers? My friends do call me “Tsunami” to reflect my personal skills rather than my design. I am a doer, an over achiever, I take my work very seriously and have so much passion for what I do. That’s why they call me so. I believe that when you have so much passion for what you do along with the right amount of determination and hard work, miracles do happen. I read that you said you are on a mission to deliver ‘happy vivid interiors’. What do you want Nihal Zaki Interiors to accomplish? I want Nihal Zaki Interiors’ brand name to be associated with beauty, creativity and reflect a high social class. I dream that when my client owns a piece designed by me or has a room interior from NZ, that would give them a feeling of strength and empowerment sensation only my brand would be able to deliver.

MOROCCAN JUST GOT MARRIED TO MODERNISM By Nader Ramadan Images courtesy of Lab 59

72

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

M

orocco is a place of many tastes and trends, colors and concoctions, styles and sensations, but what many don’t know is Moroccan architecture and interior design was the inspiration for a new modern apartment being furnished and spruced up here in Cairo. Though some would say that modern and Moroccan don’t mix, here Moroccan motifs just made love to modern sophistication.

Lab 59 owned by young innovative architects Arch. Yassin El Hamaky and Arch. Nour El Deen Khaled were tasked to making this dream into a reality. It was a challenge no doubt to balance all the elements in their proper places even given a limited amount of space, but the result was a stunning artful space infused with a myriad of colors. Most importantly, it’s full of meaning.

And successful, they were in this venture, creating for their client a sanctuary from the noise into a zone where viewers can be fully immersed in peace and tranquility. If anything is a priority more other any aspect of the interior, it is the way each zone within the space has its own individual

identity, which also plays a particularly important role in preserving privacy as well. Hence, the apartment had two entrances, one for the public area of the apart and one for the private, reminiscent of old traditional architectural concepts of separating these two main spheres within the household. Being that the client has an active social life, it was of utmost importance to create a living room which has more interactive elements and colors to make it an engaging space that’s interactive, acting as a platform for friendly conversations. The color palette in this residential apartment was characterized as being a neutral earthy colors such as whites, dashed and splashed with shots of bright colors, ocean blues as well as rosy reds. The interior was also accentuated with different elements, including what the designers used most effectively, art and different accessories.

73

Lab 59 is an architectural and interior design studio which is experimental by nature and innovative in principle, channeling its youthful energy into designing projects and creating concepts which are longlasting, evergreen, as well as up to date at the optimum level. They are well-known for designing a number of different projects including most recently the widely regarded traditional Greek design of Santorini restaurant in the 6th of October City. Notably, the firm also has been involved in designing projects abroad including Villa Bianco in Italy in 2009 and Mirror Shop in London in 2007.

74

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

Among the most important aspects of their design that they believe in implementing in every project is the timelessness of the design, ensuring that all the spaces that they furnish are long-lasting and stylish for the years to come. In doing so, Lab 59 prides itself on being well-informed on global trends, with its members and staff travelling extensively around the world to keep themselves and their minds open to new ideas.
