Director’s Note Dear Readers, With the near completion of the end-of-year finals, we can safely say that summer is here!

With that in mind, we had carefully considered the question as to how we could approach the hot season to make it even more hip! Travel and hospitality was one such theme as we explored the excellence of design in both villas and hotels all over the world.

As a side note, since Ramadan has once again blessed the world, we would like to wish all our readers a Ramadan Kareem! Hoping that this month of peace and mercy will serve to unite humanity even more and more! Managing Director

A

lila, one of the most prestigious names in hotels and resorts, has recently opened its newest addition to its global hotel chain, Alila Jabal Akhdar in Oman. Being that Jabal Akhbar means in Arabic the ‘Green Mountain’, this luxury spot lives up to its name perched 2000 meters above sea level giving visitors scenic views of the Al Hajar Mountains. Simply put, Alila Jabal Akhdar synthesizes a heavenly experience combined with the natural beauty of Oman’s mountain ranges. 24

LUXURY ON THE SUMMIT By Nader Ramadan Designed by Atkins Images courtesy of Alila Hotels

When we imagine the Arab world, we think about deserts, sand dunes, and completely desolate landscapes. Yet, buying a small plane ticket to fly to Oman could potentially change your perception of what it means to float in the celestial delight of a luxury resort which overlooks the peaks of Oman’s extensive chains of mountains.

25

The Al Hajar Mountain Range could make you believe you’re in parts of the Himalayas, North America, perhaps on top of Mount Sinai, or maybe even somewhere else. Sometimes to escape you need almost literally put your head in the clouds. Alila Jabal Akhdar is just what you need combining the sheer beauty of the location with the cutting edge designs of a prestigious global hotel chain, such as that of Alila.

26

MAY/JUNE 2015

With its architectural design conducted by UK-based firm Atkins and its interior design by Thailand’s P49 Deesign the place consists of 78 suites, two luxury villas, the Juniper Restaurant, The Rose Lounge, and a spa, making it fully equipped with the aesthetics and modern amenities any traveler would need.

28

MAY/JUNE 2015

By CNN, it was registered as one of 2014’s twelve most anticipated hotel openings for travelers and now it’s open, ready to receive visitors. This hotel is as eco-friendly as it gets sculpted out of old stones and wood; to the viewer it’s quite literally a modern reinterpretation of traditional mountain cottages done on a more ritzy scale. In a nutshell, the structure integrates local Omani construction techniques with visual elements within the area fuse and weave the structure into the landscape.

29

Alila Jabal Akhdar Oman is the last frontier in the country's main mountain range, full equipped with all the modern treats and delights any traveller could ask for.

30

MAY/JUNE 2015

It’s a celestial celebration of experiencing traditional Omani living with a touch of rich extravagance and elegance. The mountains, the wind, the relaxation, and a sense of stylish solitude is part of the recipe needed to fully revive oneself. It is, to say the least, the last frontier, patented and fully equipped to pamper any modern traveler.

t the heart of New Cairo, The Gate is a new foundational residential community project designed by Arch. Vincent Callebaut, built on the Egypt’s new initiative to live a more sustainable future. A project which is currently being developed by the architect’s client Abraj Misr, it is not only expected to be a lucrative residential community that could potentially drive investments forward, but also an exemplary model through which Egyptians can mastermind a new ‘greener’ way of live. In a statement that was released by Vincent Callebaut Architectures, Abraj Misr asserted that this community would be an alternative

way of living through which other developers can build upon its example for further expansion in the future. “It is time for Cairo to witness the creation of an iconic sustainable building that would express the future of the city ‘Victorious’ [Al Qahera],

after decades of urban degradation and also after the recent flip page of unrest – it represents the demand to look into the peak guidance into the future which developers would seek to track,” said Abraj Masr in the statement.

This new community has several key features which make it distinctively more sustainable for modern society’s growth, addressing some of the key problems that many traditional cities may have. Interestingly enough, some of these features are contemporary interpretations of ancient architectural motifs, such as windcatchers (known as ‘Maqlaf’ in Egypt), which is a tradition that dates back to ancient Egypt revived by Hassan Fathy in his neo-Islamic architectural work. In The Gate, Windcatchers are transformed into mega-trees which provide a system of passive cooling during the hot season. There is also an additional source of passive cool through a geothermal system which is fused with the core of each vertical shaft. Growing along the nine megatrees and the Fogger System, Living Walls will be used to refresh the atmosphere with clean air. VCA PERS FROM THE CLUBHOUSE

34

MAY/JUNE 2015

To further add to the botanical dimension in addition to being a natural source of sustenance, the Roof Food Gardens will be spread all over the entire complex, making the community self-sufficient with the growth of crops and improving the roof’s thermal inertia. The project also makes use of solar energy with solar photovoltaic cells covering the entire surface of the roof, in addition to solar heater tubes which are conveniently placed above each core on the roof. Winds turbines will also be a characteristic feature and source of energy. From an interior design perspective, future residents will be

encouraged to use recyclable materials and furnishing to further reduce the carbon footprint of the community. This green initiative comes as Cairo’s air pollution levels could not get any higher. According to a report from the World Health Organization, the city’s residents inhale more than 20 times the acceptable level of air pollution, making them comparable to cigarette smokers. This has had hazardous results in public health with residents having high rates of heart and lung diseases due to the spiking levels of zinc, nickel, cadmium as well as other heavy metals.

SUMMER FEVER… FABRICS MADE FUNKY

By Nader Ramadan Images courtesy of Harlequin Studio

A

s the flowers grow, as the butterflies are set aloft, as the air flows, and as the fragrance of morning dew perfumes the dawn air, there comes a gradual progression of designers to the more colorful, the visually diverse, and the more refreshingly psychedelic. When the heat is in, so are the colors. Ladies and gentlemen, spring is here. And with spring, comes its very spirit. Yet, why should this spirit only be alive in the spring time? Releasing its newest addition to its extensive family of fabrics and wallpaper products, Harlequin Studio introduces the Amazilia collection, making any interior design ever-green all year around, so that when the cold sets in, we’ll be ready for the storm. “The Harlequin Studio has produced Amazilia, a stunning collection of fabrics and wallcoverings based on extravagant tropical motifs in magnificent colourways,” it said on the company’s website. “The

40

prints characterize the collection, encompassing delicate hummingbirds, botanically-drawn butterflies, fashionable feathers, glossy oversized leaves and etched elephants in stately procession. They are completed by ikat embroideries, trellis-style weaves and a stunning, mosaic-like tapestry weave depicting tessellated tulips.” In addition, the company also offers additional dyed velvets which demonstrates the company’s firm belief and devotion to the comfort and high quality visual aesthetics. “A striking collection of sumptuous spraydyed velvets, suitable for upholstery as well as drapes. Available in eight luxurious shades, the colour moves across the width of the velvet, intense in the middle then fading and twisting towards the edges,” the statement on the company website added.

"Harlequin breathes

colors into homes in need of revival for summer" Among the collection’s signature items, particularly of the most attractive items in this magazine’s opinion, is the Papilio wallpaper which encompasses a panoramic display of different butterfly species on your wall, not only giving the space a sense of motion but also providing a dynamic element in the kaleidoscope of different colors that accentuate the interior. Papilio is also a quite an uplifting pattern for curtains. Taking on an even more natural tone, Nalina is also ideal to add a more botanical dimension to your home being a stylish depiction of a variety of different orchids, all placed in a collage of lovely fabric comfort. There’s nothing like making various different flora, fauna, available in 20 different shades according to the customer’s preference. Floral motifs can sometimes be taken and translated into something even more organic, such as in the case of Rumbia with its interestingly vibrant colors to create a visual inferno with the framework of different items in the interior space.

41

Imagine that you are not in your bedroom but in a forest in the tropics. Burst out with color, texture, and trees is the Kabala line, which comes in several different themes including Zest (green), Gooseberry (darker green), Lagoon (blue), and Papaya (red). For years, Harlequin Studio has always been distinguished for its creative skill in coming up with the new tasteful designs every year for the constantly evolving market in Europe and the UK. Though architects have their role in forming structures, emotions that one can experience with any interior space mainly is determined through the color gradients that are set by the wallpapers, fabrics, and curtains that you purchase. It is color

that can ultimately determines a lifestyle, an emotional experience, the psychological well-being of any homeowner. We’ve seen that cities have made people depressed, grumpy, and at the times violent, yet it is placing a human being in his/her natural settings that creates a sense of internal piece. It is in this way ultimately that if you buy color, you buy happiness.

AIRCRAFT LUXURY By Nader Ramadan Images courtesy of TEAGUE

EAGUE being a pioneer and main innovator in travel and technology designed the Athlete’s Plane, built to be the one and only luxury pad for any professional athlete who’s on the go over the skies. Recognizing the wear and tear any travel experience can have on an athlete TEAGUE spared no expense to ensure that travelling athlete perform at their optimum just like back home upon their arrival. “Air travel often hinders athletic performance due to the impact on physical, physiological and cognitive

functions,” said TEAGUE Creative Director, Philipp Steiner. “When professional athletes travel across multiple time zones their team is statistically more likely to lose—the Athlete’s Plane essentially levels the playing field.” Taking this into consideration, the company has designed an interior cabin to keep them fit and function for every coming game. Fit with a complete training room and all the amenities any athlete could need, players upon landing are fit to hit a homerun with lie-flat seating for comfort, biometric testing facilities, a noise proof environment, and ‘pluginto-plane’ compression sleeves for sore muscles that need to be iced. The plane comes as a complete package to serve the athletes’ pre-game and postgames needs, whatever they may be! Working in close coordination with Nike, this cabin is a revolutionary step forward basing its unique features on sports health research, sleep science findings, and feedback from some of the legends of professional sports including coaches and former athletes. It’s not only for fashion but for the fans so that they can get a good kick out of the NBA, NFL, World Cup, or any part of the alphabet they so desire.

he 54th edition of Salone Internazionale del Mobile ended on a positive note and the numbers stand out to show it with up to 310,840 visitors this year, proof that global migration to Milan from April 14th to the 19th is no social coincidence. With even better designs than the year before, iSaloni was more than meets the eyes exploring revolutionary trends in design that will be the talk of the town for the years to come. In mid-April of this year, Milan became a truly global city in every sense of the word. In one of the few occasions, where some of the best in the business have to come to show people what it really means to be designer, being that they do not just come up with creative ideas about products and projects only but also about changing people’s lifestyle.

This year Salone Internazionale del Mobile has been stronger than ever, with furniture companies from every corner of the globe out in full force ready to showcase their latest products. Young architects and aspiring designers also played their part well in this rather theatrical culmination of global design potential. Apart from the feedback received from the business side, all together visitors number up to 310,840, well over a quarter of a million people come to see what’s hot in Milan.

“The data confirms the importance and attractiveness of an event that showcases the very best of Italian and international furnishing,” said Salone del Mobile President, Roberto Snaidero. “The companies are delighted with the quality of attendees and the solid business results achieved over the six days of the fair, thanks to their own commitment and dedication to tackling and overcoming the tough financial situation of the last few years. The Salone therefore constitutes the first signal of the forecast recovery.”

Milan this April was stampeded with a rare concoction of global design, marking yet another profitable year.

Of the most notable spectacles of stylishness in Salone Internazionale del Mobile was Michele De Lucchi's special installation of amazing proportions “The Walk” being a circular path through the maze that makes up the workplace. In a statement, he emphasizes the importance of believing in a philosophy in order produce an ideal outcome for work spaces.

“Philosophy is well worth believing in, and philosophy was born of walking. Living, working, producing, discussing, making decisions and evolving only make sense if we know where we are going and if there are good reasons to believe that that particular place or objective is worth reaching,” said De Lucchi in a press statement. Visitors also got to feast their eyes on “In Italy” yet another hitting

62

MAY/JUNE 2015

Celebrating its opening in Heliopolis area with a festive event, Blend Furniture’s presence is not just like any typical furniture store, but its newly opened branch is a complete

in-store experience made to be more flexible for the customer and to give potential buyers a wider range of options under the roof of the SEDA fabrics showroom.

Blend Furniture doesn't let the customer compromise....they offer the perfect blend!

Being Blend’s latest concept, the in-store experience was introduced with notable success to enable the company to more easily expand its locations, thereby serving a wider customer base. We are really thankful to have this partnership with them,” Effat said. “What benefits the customer is that for sure any customer who wants to furnish his/her house will be looking for curtains, fabrics, and cushions. You always visit the furniture store separately and you always the visit the fabrics store separately. Now

you can find both in one place. We’re the same team and we’re serving the same customer.” Heliopolis is only just the beginning for Blend Furniture as plans are being set in motion for the in-store experience to be expanded in many other mediums. As a youthful brand concept, Blend Furniture aims to increase its cooperation with many other brands so that it can expand the scope of the services that it offers its customers in the future.

INTERIOR • RESIDENTIAL

A SANCTUARY OF MOROCCAN INSPIRATIONS By Nader Ramadan Images courtesy of Sandra Espinet

L

os Cabos, Mexico….A land of taste, tradition, not to mention tantalizing tortillas! Mexico has just about everything you need to lead an alternative lifestyle, the warm weather all year around by itself is a plus. But even in the land of Mexico, many would like to reminisce on living an Oriental dream such as that of the princes of Morocco and Andalusia. Multi-award winning interior designer Sandra Espinet (owner of S.E. Designer Services) designs a house that not only satisfies her client, but builds a traditional bridge back to the great relics of the Moroccan architecture, one that very much sets the foundations for the construction of the Al Hambra palace as well as many other ingenious structures throughout the Grenada in Spain. The first and most accomplishment that the Cabos residence achieves is its intimate interaction with the ocean via visual cues systematically placed within the structure, especially with manipulation of the pool and other furnishing elements in the interior space as per the client’s request.

64

MAY/JUNE 2015

“The owners wanted the main goal to be, to make the ocean the main feature of the home. Thus walking through the main floor to the back of the living room and opening the wooden panel doors, the home immediately blends and interacts directly into the pool that connects to the ocean,” said a statement. “Espinet and the client filled the terrace with giant furniture that was hand selected, each piece based on comfort and volume, while the fabrics were chosen to resemble the Mexican beach.

To complete the package, the pool had to have a complete makeover so that it could complement the outdoor area, perfect for taking in the desert night stars as well as the sights and sounds that makeup the beautiful area.

“The large pool was completely redesigned, adding romantic accent lighting and spouts that create a gentle ripple to the water. Finally, serving as a beautiful personal and relaxing retreat is a cozy bench on the foot of the pool overlooking the ocean; perfect for stargazing and watching sunsets, it added.

65

Lifestyles elements were taken into consideration, such as their habit of leading a highly active social life entailing frequent gatherings with family and friends. “For such a large family who enjoy gathering together among soft ocean breezes and warm sunrays, Espinet added several large and inviting social settings into the main floor; each sectioned off with mosaic tiles that act like carpets. Whether it’s an outdoor barbecue or a lavish three course meal this villa has giant open cooking areas complete with tables and bars so that the chef can always have company. The kitchen is designed around an enormous marble and wood island, to serve the guests and residents as an elegant food haven; it’s intricate patterns/ carvings, soft pops of teal, and the low twinkling LED lighting all work together to make the perfect kitchen.”

66

MAY/JUNE 2015

Customization was a key element in making this villa victorious! Each and every piece furniture was made to the fit with the interior space and reinforce the general visual themes. “Almost every piece of furniture in the home is custom and designed to fit the style and wants of the owner. However nothing is quite as exceptional as the 10 foot King canopy bed that was hand carved from sandy colored woods and draped with sheers to portray a sensual retreat. Attached to the master bedroom is the dimly lit palatial spabathroom; the giant tub has a mixture of brown mosaic tile and jade colored marble under a delicate LED pendant. The details in the bathroom make it unforgettable what with: custom semi –precious stone knobs, a mirrored vanity and thick carved wood doors,” the company’s press release said.

Just like Al Andulus was the fusion of Islamic near eastern styles, this house testifies and echoes the same level of aesthetic sophistication. It seeks to comfort the eye, asserts high functionality, and supports the client’s lifestyle in the most sophisticated way.

MEET THE DESIGNER

For many years, Sandra Espinet, being the owner of S.E. SNAPSHOT DIARIES:

CAPTURING THE THRESHOLD By Nader Ramadan Photography by Arch. Karim El Hayawan

I

t is all too often that we underestimate what the value of vintage really is. Usually when someone asks you the name of a song, you reluctantly reply that “it’s an oldie”, as if it is out of style, out of date, and ultimately out of order. Yet, even in an oldie you can find wisdoms and memories that are priceless in an age where people camp outside showrooms so that they can get the latest model of anything they want. Indeed, this is the reality of the corporate world, but allow us to take a step back in time behind the lens of Arch. Karim El Hayawan’s DSLR camera only to rediscover the real value of memories the past.

Arch. El Hayawan takes a trip throughout Cairo to visit some of the city’s old buildings with specific focus on entrances. Now, doors can tell you a lot about what the place is like inside, but it can’t tell you about the nature of who resides within. That is, without a doubt question, that goes beyond what is captured by the camera, but what these pictures do capture is the connection to aesthetics and detail people had in better days.
