CES 2016, A MiCrOCOSM Of SMArT HOME iNdUSTry In early January, CES 2016 managed to lure in the world’s brightest tech companies into the sin city, Las Vegas, to present their latest technologies and innovations. From 4K home cameras, intuitive control enabled by devices like Amazon Echo to the connected kitchen from Bosch, Siemens, these technologies surely wowed the beholders wherever they went at show. In this issue, SMAhome presents the special feature of CES 2016 smart home reports. In the 25-page report, we shed lights on the next smart home gadgets and design trends. We also shared the uptake for product developers based on observation made at the show on Page 48. Despite the exciting launches, the hodgepodge of protocols, the not-so-DIY-friendly products to the reduced visitor flow in the bigger smart home area compared to the 2015 edition, smart home market challenges were epitomized by CES 2016. Limited consumer demands with too many choices, together with technological fragmentation, are delaying the mass adoption of smart home. While interoperability remains up in the air, Deutsche Telekom and many other observers believe that there are no industry-wide platforms or standards. Partnership may be the only way to survive. For developing smart home business, Deutsche Telekom has been investing its efforts since 2011. Read their smart home experience on Page 20 and comments from an array of industry veterans on the essentials of smart home market development on Page 52 and Page 73. Moving outside home, the entryway had been the blind spot of home security. And makers saw the opportunity. Products like smart locks, video doorbells and DIY outdoor cameras have been launched to help eliminate this blind spot by bringing connectivity to the entryway. SMAhome presents the latest gadgets for securing your home’s entryway on Page 9. Spring is the season for sourcing. If you are planning Asian sourcing trips, do not miss SMAhome International Conference and Exhibition 2016 to be held during April 1921 in Taipei. Quite unlike the other smart home related trade fairs around the world, the show is well-positioned to meet your distinctive professional business requirements for home security and smart home supply chains. Check out why it deserves your visit on Page 66.

9 Eye-catching Smart Door Locks of 2015 / 2016

By Cindy Lin

Common features of smart door locks include auto unlock / lock, status display and activity log, and virtual keys that can be given out to visitors for temporary access. With auto unlock / lock, doors can unlock automatically as the user approaches (with the smartphone), and auto lock behind the user after leaving. With status display and activity log, users can better keep track of who enters and leaves the house. With virtual keys, users can more conveniently and precisely

The ubiquity of smartphones has helped usher in a new generation of door locks – smart door locks. In most cases, these locks have been designed with smartphones at the center and as the new key. However, many support alternative ways of unlocking the door in parallel to give users options, such as using a traditional key, key fob, keypad, biometrics, or even wearables to unlock the door.

10 mySMAhome.com January/February 2016

manage visitor access – not only can keys be given out remotely, they can also come into effect and expire as set by the user. Bluetooth is a popular protocol for smart locks and is adopted by leading companies like August, Yale and Kwikset. With Bluetooth, smart locks can establish point-to-point communication with users’ smartphones. However, this also means that users cannot access the lock outside of its range. While having locks operate offline is comforting for some, out of privacy reasons, others may want the option to remotely monitor and control their locks. To bring a Bluetooth smart door lock online, a gateway (or bridge) is required, which can be a dedicated device or built into related door products. For example, August Home offers two options for enabling remote access to the August Smart Lock – August Connect, a dedicated gateway, and August Doorbell Cam, a doorbell camera. Some smart door locks, such as LockState’s RemoteLock 6i, speak Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth. The advantage of using a Wi-Fi lock is that it can connect to the Internet directly through one’s Wi-

Fi router without the need for an additional gateway. But the downside is that using Wi-Fi can drain the battery too quickly. RemoteLock 6i addresses this issue by having its Wi-Fi radio go to sleep for set intervals of time called the “HeartBeat Interval”. When in sleep, the Wi-Fi radio cannot receive messages from the user, and visitors have to press the keypad to wake up the radio. A noteworthy trend for smart door locks is that the industry is moving fast to connect these locks with other devices in the smart home to enable new scenarios and create value-added applications. This is often done through third-party integrations. Popular integrations include integrations with other smart door products like doorbell cameras, with prominent ecosystems like the Nest ecosystem, with Apple’s HomeKit framework, or with rental services like Airbnb.

August Smart Lock HomeKit Enabled The HomeKit enabled version was announced in October, along with August’s platform - August Access, and a few other new products – August Smart Keypad and August Doorbell Cam. This version has all the features of the original lock, and with HomeKit compatibility, users can unlock, lock, or check the status of the lock using Siri. August has integrated with Nest Thermostat, Nest Cam and XFINITY Home app, and it is also part of Airbnb’s Host Assist program. According to Airbnb’s announcement in November, “Soon hosts can connect their Airbnb accounts with partners, including August, Danalock, Igloohome, Kevo, Keycafe, Lockstate, Miwa, Nest, and Yale Locks to easily coordinate guest entry without the need to wait for guests, hide keys, or manually schedule and send virtual keys.”

Yale Linus Announced in October, Yale Linus is a lock developed through the Works with Nest program. Unlike August, which only replaces the interior part of existing deadbolt, Yale Linus offers a complete replacement. The lock works with Nest Protect, Nest Learning Thermostat, and Nest Cam. For example, when Nest Protect detects smoke or carbon monoxide, Linus issues a voice alert and an on-screen visual alert to warn the user even before they enter. www.yale2you.com/linuslock

Kwikset Signature Series Deadbolt Locks with Home Connect Showcased at CEDIA 2015, this Z-Wave enabled deadbolt features Kwikset’s SmartKey re-key technology for fast re-key within seconds and BumpGuard technology to protect lock bumping. The lock supports remote access control. www.kwikset.com

LockState RemoteLock 6i With support of up to 1000 user codes or guest codes, RemoteLock 6i is a Wi-Fi lock suitable for not just residential applications but also commercial and industrial applications. The lock is part of the Airbnb Host Assist Program.

This is a non-conventional lock that does not rely on wireless connectivity at all. At the bottom of the lock is an optical scanner that can read codes displayed on the screen of a smartphone. The lock supports key sharing and scheduled guest keys.

MUL-T-LOCK ENTR ENTR uses encrypted Bluetooth smart technology and provides several means for access control. Users can unlock the door using the mobile app, Remote Control, Fingerprint Reader, or Touchpad Wall Reader. The lock also features rechargeable batteries and two charging options – Wired Charger and Wire-free Charger.

Brink’s Home Security Array Array is a digital deadbolt that can connect directly to Wi-Fi routers for Internet access, so no hubs are required. The deadbolt is powered by a combination of a proprietary battery and an onboard photovoltaic panel that, according to the company, can harvest light energy even in dim light. Users can use their smartphone, tablet, or a traditional metal key to unlock the door. To be released in late 2016, Array will be compatible with HomeKit, Works with Nest products and other smart home systems.

IKILOCK www.ikilock.com

IKILOCK, along with IKICENTER and IKIPLUG, make up the three home security and connected home products the French startup IKICLOCK will be unveiling at CES 2016. IKICENTER is the heart of the IKILOCK system. With IKICENTER, it allows users to remotely lock/unlock the IKILOCK. IKILOCK replaces the interior part of the lock so the user’s traditional key still works. According to the company, IKILOCK is not just another Bluetooth smart lock, and it instead relies on several protocols to deliver reliable and secure door management. When the user unlocks IKILOCK using the app on their smartphone, the request is sent to IKILOCK’s remote server via the phone’s 4G network for example. After the Wi-Fi connected IKICENTER receives the request from the remote server, it orders IKILOCK to unlock using ISM 6LoWPAN technology. “This protocol (ISM 6LoWPAN) allows us to implement stronger authentication processes than Bluetooth, and has a longer range,” says the company. Other features supported by IKILOCK include unlimited virtual keys and live status updates.

BriLong BLE Smart Lock The BLE Smart Lock uses LockSens technology for automatic door unlock when an authorized user comes into proximity of the lock with their smartphone. When paired with the Brainchild WiFi Video Doorbell, the lock can also be accessed remotely. iOS and Android BriLong apps are available for users to lock/unlock the door. E-Keys with customizable settings such as duration and number of uses can be created and given out to visitors. With the web portal, user can manage lock settings and E-Keys.

9 Must-See Smart Video Doorbells of 2015 / 2016

By Cindy Lin

While smart video doorbells can operate as standalone devices, they can also integrate with other security devices for the entry area, such as smart door locks. But it doesn’t end there. New integrations with products, services or platforms beyond home security are also happening. Nest and IFTTT integrations are two examples.

Smart video doorbells are becoming the next popular home security gadget to get for upgrading the entry area for homes. Not only do smart video doorbells bring connectivity to the door, they are also an attractive alternative to traditional intercom systems because they are easier to install and less costly in comparison. In 2015, well-recognized smart home brands like Vivint and August released their own smart video doorbells. Meanwhile, existing brands like Ring and SkyBell continued to push for upgrades by improving performance, adding new features, and enabling integrations. SkyBell HD - the third generation of the SkyBell video doorbell – offers an upgrade in video quality with the new 1080p camera and has many innovative features that are worth mentioning. With full-color night vision and a temperature and humidity sensor, SkyBell HD is a rare breed in doorbells. While temperature and humidity sensors have been increasingly embedded in smart home cameras and hubs, they have not really made it to doorbells. This year, new smart video doorbells were unveiled at CES 2016 by companies like smanos and the French startup Fenotek, adding new members to the smart video doorbell landscape. Although smart video doorbells share the common theme of supporting remote video monitoring, two-way talk, and possibly access control (when connected with a smart lock) from mobile devices, they can be highly versatile in design

and color. Going wireless is trendy to make installation simpler, with Wi-Fi being one of the most adopted wireless standards. However, smart video doorbells like the August Doorbell Cam and SkyBell HD also support Bluetooth on top of Wi-Fi. Bluetooth can be used for communication between devices. Similar to smart door locks, many doorbell cameras are integrating with Nest. Integrations with other connected devices at home such as smart door locks and lights are also popular, which allow companies to extend their services to encompass access control and home automation. Integration with smart door locks is an obvious choice as homeowners would naturally want the option to unlock the door after seeing / speaking with the visitor. ring has a program called “Ring Plus” that lets Ring Video Doorbell connect with partners like Wink, Kevo, LockState and Kisi. One way for companies to implement integration is through IFTTT (If this then that). Products or services can join the IFTTT and become an IFTTT channel, and users can create “recipes” to connect two channels, so that when an event (“if”) occurs on one channel, an action (“that”) can be triggered on another channel. Ring announced IFTTT integration in December 2015, adding a new member to its Ring Plus family. With IFTTT, users can for example have their Philips Hue turn on when the Ring Video Doorbell detects motion.

August Doorbell Cam Wireless: BLE & Wi-Fi August Doorbell Cam is equipped with an HD camera and requires Wi-Fi connection and a Bluetooth Smart Ready phone. Users can receive alerts when someone rings the bell or when motion is detected, and the audio and video of each visit is recorded. What is important to note is that if used in conjunction with the August Smart Lock, users can remotely control and monitor the status of the lock, so the doorbell cam also serves as the gateway for connecting the lock to the Internet. However, if the user just wants to connect their lock to the Internet, they can buy the August Connect, a dedicated gateway that costs much less ($79) than the doorbell cam ($199). august.com

7 Pioneering DIY Outdoor Cameras of 2015 / 2016

By Cindy Lin

There is no doubt that home surveillance camera has been one of the highlights for the smart home in recent years. Up until now, the majority of smart home cameras on the market have been for indoor use, and options for similarly equipped outdoor home cameras have seemed limited in comparison. By similarly equipped we are referring to features like easy installation and setup, motion detection, remote viewing of live or recorded videos from a smartphone or a tablet, instant mobile/email alerts, and local or cloud storage. Popular home cameras like Piper nv, Netatmo Welcome and Withings Home all made their debut at CES last year, and they are all indoor cameras. Nevertheless, more smart home cameras for outdoor use have started to surface since last year.

In April of 2015, FLIR released a multi-purpose Wi-Fi camera for indoor, outdoor and sports use called FLIR FX. Later in November, Zmodo announced a n e w home camera line, which includes Zmodo Replay – a four-camera kit with two indoor and two outdoor cameras. And during the recently held CES 2016, Ring released Stick Up Cam, a wire-free outdoor camera featuring two-way talk, and Netatmo released Presence, an outdoor camera that can tell whether it detected a person, a car or an animal. Both Zmodo and Ring have a smart doorbell in their product lineup, and Ring specifically states that the Stick Up Cam is designed to supplement Ring Video Doorbell. Generally speaking, outdoor cameras mainly differ from indoor ones in having weatherproof capabilities and longer detection ranges. For cameras to be installed outside, they have to withstand exposure to rain, sunlight and dirt. Outdoor cameras also need to see out further. Netatmo Presence features a detection range of up to 20m / 65ft. Outdoor installations of cameras that require wiring or chords can be a real hassle. Luckily, there have been more wireless and wire-free outdoor home cameras released to the market to make installation simpler. Some cameras, like Zmodo’s outdoor camera, use wireless communication, but they have to be plugged in for power. Others, although in the minority, are completely without wires. Arlo by NETGEAR released in

2014 is a classic example. Ring’s Stick Up Cam is one of the latest to join the cohort – it is Wi-Fi connected and operates on a rechargeable battery that will last 6 to 12 months on one charge with regular usage. As more activities take place outside of home than inside, motion detection has to be more precise and smarter to prevent false alerts. Dividing the field of view into “zones” and allowing users to choose which zones to look for activities, all from within the app, is a popular technique for selective detection of meaningful events. Cameras like Stick Up Cam, FLIR FX and Edimax’ IC-9110W all use this technique. For FLIR FX and Stick Up Cam, users can further customize sensitivity. Although it doesn’t support face recognition like Netatmo Welcome does, the company’s newest addition Presence uses Smart-Sight technology that leverages deep learning algorithm to detect people, cars and animals so users can quickly grasp the situation.

Generally speaking, outdoor cameras mainly differ from indoor ones in having weatherproof capabilities and longer detection ranges. For cameras to be installed outside, they have to withstand exposure to rain, sunlight and dirt.

Deutsche Telekom:

Partnerships Add Value for Smart Home Users

By Veronica Chen/ Cindy Lin

Europe’s leading telco, Deutsche Telekom, has been in the smart home business for more than five years since 2011. SMAhome has had the pleasure to speak with Thomas Knops, head of Connected Home Marketing and Sales at Deutsche Telekom AG to share the company’s five-year observations and strategies to create growth in the connected home.

How many years has Deutsche Telekom been involved in smart home?

How can companies benefit from using the QIVICON platform or the Connected Home platform?

Deutsche Telekom founded an alliance of companies from different markets in 2011, under the name of QIVICON. The companies collaborate on a cross-vendor, wireless-based home automation solution that has been available in the German market since fall 2013. Deutsche Telekom also now offers its Connected Home platform as a white-label solution, which has an interoperable, expandable and scalable architecture that enables companies from multiple industries to develop connected home products and services and integrate them into a larger ecosystem.

Both QIVICON in Germany and our internationally available Connected Home platform are open and technologically expandable systems that enable companies to develop new solutions or services, extend existing products and adapt to new market potential and target groups. The partnership opportunities we offer with QIVICON and the Connected Home platform as part of our smart home business allow companies of all sizes, including major telcos and start-ups, to cooperate with other strong companies. Already, we have more than 35 partners on board that are each benefiting from cooperation on product development or on new and additional sales channels, to name just two of the many possibilities. Other benefits include a constant opportunity to open up additional sales potential in addition to existing business. For example, access new target groups, extend existing customer relationships with up- and cross-selling opportunities or use of applications and related services to create new bundles.

How is the QIVICON platform leveraged for different markets? Our strategy is to use QIVICON internationally where it makes sense. In some international markets, we will not use the QIVICON brand right from the beginning. QIVICON is the name of the platform, but if there is only one company starting to offer something based on the platform, it is not necessary to use QIVICON to communicate with the customer. However, as more companies join the platform, we will be more than happy to start using the QIVICON brand.

20 mySMAhome.com January/February 2016

Not only do these (OEM/ ODM) companies represent only one product, they represent hundreds of customers. Thomas Knops, head of Connected Home Marketing and Sales, Deutsche Telekom AG

Do you suggest Asian manufacturers to join QIVICON? There is not one answer, and the company needs to decide if they want to utilize the platform. If the company already has a footprint in Germany or Europe, then it makes sense for them to launch products on their own because they already have some experience. They have everything in place, like the sales channels and the logistics. But if it’s a new company, not necessarily one that has been seen in Europe, they might need support in different areas. In my opinion, it makes absolute sense to utilize a platform because first of all the platform helps you

collaborate with other brands. Utility companies like Vattenfall in Germany, Entega and others already use the QIVICON platform to sell certain product bundles. Some Asian manufacturers might want to utilize the sales channel of different other companies, for instance utility companies. They can also collaborate with Deutsche Telekom or others who have already a good history in the market and all the sales channels ready. So it makes perfect sense to contribute and participate in the QIVICON platform in Germany or talk to us and use the white label platform. The manufacturer can also utilize the platform to hook the product to an existing application, for instance to include their product in a mobile app, and the manufacturer will be included in this application. It works because it is one platform, and customers don’t care in the end how it works. In terms of scaling the business, we are now starting to internationalize, so if you’re a part of this, you can expand to other countries. Joining the QIVICON provides additional business opportunities. For example, D-Link is part of QIVICON. Its products are incorporated in the application of Deutsche Telekom, and they will be sold via Deutsche Telekom. That is the QIVICON side of it, but D-Link is also doing their own business.

What are the biggest challenges Deutsche Telekom faces? One of the greatest challenges facing any firms seeking to enter the connected home market is the lack of common standards and architectures for connectivity itself, as well as a lack of openness in terms of the APIs between platforms. Today, many proprietary and incompatible wireless protocols exist, which is a major obstacle to mass market adoption of connected home services.

Data will become the essential element of the connected service offering

Currently, there are many mutually incompatible solutions, both at the connectivity and the platform level. Based on this situation, Deutsche Telekom assumes there will be no market-dominating technical standards and the many standards will coexist for years to come.

What are the key findings in your new market analysis smart home professionals should know? How can they utilize these findings? Deutsche Telekom’s new market analysis report “How to create growth from the connected home” by Strategy Analytics sets out the principal opportunities and business models for this burgeoning sector. The report details several areas of opportunity, such as home automation and energy management, that could be exploited by a range of players – telcos, utilities, retailers, insurers, warranty providers, home assistance providers, and appliance and consumer hardware manufacturers. In total, it finds that the Western European connected home market will be worth up to €12 billion annually by 2019, covering almost 50 million homes. A great deal of this revenue will be from market growth, but much of the change in the coming January/February 2016 mySMAhome.com 21

Deutsche Telekom’s smart home experience and 10 observations • Deutsche Telekom’s experience: D eutsche Telekom is working with many leading consumer brands, including Samsung, Sonos, Miele, Philips, Osram, eQ-3 and others, supporting their individual initiatives by providing an open platform, which integrates multiple devices from different manufacturers and enables consumers to create their own scenarios.

• Deutsche Telekom’s observations: 1. For many in the industry, security and safety are often seen as the ‘low hanging fruit’ or entry strategy into the connected home market – and the means by which to capture value in the short to medium term. 2. Smart thermostats are the first step on the journey to enabling a broader vision of energy efficient homes that will also see innovative new value added services, and in the future on-site generation and storage. 3. To date, most devices in this category are silo-based, single use cases, yet all our insight suggests that consumers will increasingly demand ‘cross-functional’ use cases that can create scenarios for multiple devices, i.e. IFTTT (If This Then That) functionality. 4. T echnical support represents a means whereby both telcos and retailers can deepen and strengthen their relationship with customers by proactively resolving customers issues and extending the range of services that they provide.

22 mySMAhome.com January/February 2016

5. Connected home insurance is a major development which is set to have a profound implication on the industry. 6. There is a clear market need for ambient assisted living (AAL) technology – or telecare – in Europe and the Western world. That is often a complex health and social service landscape – with boundaries between ‘health’ and ‘social’ aspects of monitoring often blurred. 7. There is rarely a conversation on the subject of the connected home or IoT that does not simultaneously include data analytics: often it is seen as synonymous with one of the prime drivers, both of manufacturers and service providers to capture sensor data. 8. D espite the many advantages, analytics raises concerns. Consumers want their data to be respected and know how it is being used. If companies are not transparent, then there is a risk consumers reject the connected home and all the benefits that it brings. 9. As in all markets, the adoption of innovative business models is one of the principal means of creating new value – the connected home is no different. 10. The models that we expect to be deployed will need to support the development of multiple capabilities, many of which will often rely on a number of third party firms, from financing, maintenance, connectivity, prognostics, insurance and installation companies.

What can users expect from Deutsche Telekom for 2016? We’re likely to witness an explosion in smart home technology, which goes beyond personal and mediabased devices to include everything from boilers, radiator valves and smart meters to previously inanimate objects, such as furniture and children’s toys. As such, we will also see major changes in many industries as visionary companies as well as start-ups take advantage of the opportunities available within the smart home space, by offering new value propositions, based on new value chain designs and business models. This is where Deutsche Telekom’s open Connected Home platform comes in. One of the key developments we foresee – and

that Deutsche Telekom is promoting - is the move from connected devices to connected services. Home insurance could become one of the most innovative areas of a future smart home market. There is an opportunity for smart security services to provide a reduction in premium cost for consumers – insurers may even offer monitoring devices for free to reduce liability. For the insurance sector, the amount of insight smart homes can completely change the business model. Valuable data on occupancy, water leaks, water usage and other risk areas can be analyzed. For example, a smart home may be able to pick the potential for a water leak up before it happens, leading to significant savings. The provision of insurance ties into other home services such as fulfilling warranties, providing assistance and performing remote diagnostics. By monitoring smart home devices, providers should be able to prevent serious break-downs by recommending replacement before they fail. This keeps consumers happy, lowers the potential for insurance claims and offers retailers/ manufacturers the potential for further after-sales. We will be seeking out for more partners across multiple industries; promoting our Connected Home platform as a business enabler for telcos, retailers, utilities and insurers; and we will be working closely with developers to create and integrate more devices that answer consumer needs.

VIVA LABS:

HOW TO CRACK THE SMART HOME MARKET

In the real world (market), smart home has very little happening. Henrik Holen, managing director of Viva Labs, shares some insights on how to make a leap.

What is hurdling smart home adoption? The more connected, the smarter a home is. The more sensors, cameras and actuators you install in a home, the easier it is for the software behind them to do incredible things, things you only thought happened in the movies. Unfortunately, until you get to a certain point, your smart home can feel a bit dumb. This is the biggest hurdle for smart home adoption. The challenge is that while a smart home now costs a fraction of what it cost just a few years ago, a fully connected apartment will still set you back a few grand. Not a lot, but since the value of a smart home can be unclear before you’ve lived in one, it’s more than most are willing to risk. For many the smart home is a nebulous concept, hard to pin down and thought of as a box of toys for enthusiastic nerds or a money sink for wealthy home owner. In fact, it can be hard to define an easy-to-grasp value proposition for a «smart home», which is why so few choose to invest in one when they build or refurbish a home. Of course, this changes when we deconstruct the smart home, reducing it to its parts. Smart thermostats like the Nest or Ecobee, alarm systems like Vivint, home monitoring like the Withings Home, and remote control like Wemo are useful and easy to understand, and individual offerings have been successful in the

mass market. What we’re lacking is a way to build our smart homes piecemeal without having to tie it together with code snippets and IFTTT. We need Iron Man’s Jarvis to start out as a door lock.

What are possible solutions to the hurdles? At Viva, we’ve identified three traits that successful, future proof solutions should have. By embodying these traits, an offering will be well-placed to meet consumer needs, both now and in the future. Henrik Holen, Managing Director, 1. Sell smart products, not smart homes Viva Labs To avoid the problem of high up-front investments, the broad smart home should be divided into smart products, limited in scope and with a clear user benefit. These should emulate an appliance in simplicity, and require an easy, one-time setup and simple usability from then on. Using a smart door lock as example, we see that it offers the clear benefits of better access control, keyless entry, and increased security by automatically locking itself. Most can be self-installed by the home owner, and works without complicated integrations or programming. 2. Be a physical footprint for a digital service The product being sold should have a physical presence and should, in its disconnected state, work identically to any product it replaces. However, the true value should comes from its connection to a digital service. A smart door lock, of course, works like a regular door lock when disconnected, at most requiring switching from a key to a pin code. The true usefulness of a smart lock comes into play when the digital service is connected and it can automatically open when you approach the door, let you remotely open the door for the delivery man, and give your AirBnB guest a virtual key instead of an actual one. 3. Provide value alone, be better together The products we provide need to offer value by themselves, usefulness at a low cost, but they also need to be designed to work better together, without requiring the user to invest time and effort into it. Once the smart door lock gets connected to your home security system, it can let you grant access to the kitchen for the food home delivery but notify you if they enter your bedroom, work as a signal to turn your thermostat off when you lock it, and let the camera take a video snippet whenever the door is unlocked. It is clear that connecting everything to one central service is powerful, but this process will never get started if we have to connect everything first. By reducing the smart home to easily understandable products, we can take the first steps towards a fully smart home.

n Home cameras are upgrading to 4K UHD and many are targeting nursery solutions.

n Entry control is a highlighted zone among home security sectors.

In addition to upgrades in functionality, several camera makers are highlighting the full compatibility with multiple communication standards. Oco2 camera supports dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz), and BLE 4.0 for integration to other smart home devices. Swann’s security DVR can be functioned as a smart home gateway, which supports up to four protocols, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, ZigBee and Z-Wave. Beyond hardware enhancements, leading brands are shifting the product portfolios to vertical solutions for better market positions. Smart nursery applications are a good example. Recognized as a camera leader, Binatone launches homecare cameras Baby Connect 7 and Baby Connect 5 under the Motorola brand. The cameras come with a 7-inch and 5-inch multi-point touch display respectively and PTZ camera. Equipped with smart analytics, the system supports indoor and outdoor temperature, humidity, noise and activity monitoring and analysis. Besides, the cameras feature two-way audio communication, baby care timer, baby sleep movement and smile detection. The company tries to differentiate itself from other competitors to cope with severe competitions in the home camera market.

Better entry Control The smart video doorbell is a growing and promising category, with lots of new innovations at the show. Some smart lock companies like August and Yale launched new video doorbells to strengthen the lineup of access control. August launched Doorbell Cam; Yale introduced Look Door Viewer, which comes

with a smart door bell and 4.3-inch LCD monitor. Innovating old-fashioned locks is not just about replacing the hardware parts, but also putting more smarts into them through leveraging cloud platforms and software. HomeKit compatibility has been a popular term for smart home devices. With the introduction of Weave, Google’s common language for Brillo in mid-2015, we’ve seen new solutions joining Google’s ecosystem this year. One of the prime examples is Yale’s deadbolts that support Google’s Brillo and interconnectivity with Weave-enabled devices from different categories and brands. Locks supporting Weave can easily talk to other connected devices and support scenario setting, such as unlocking the door, turning on lights and music when users arrive home. Other than locks, there is also another array of camera specialists who have noticed the needs for video monitoring in door entry areas, bringing to the market new products like Ring’s Stick Up Cam and Brinno’s low-power Wi-Fi camera. The award-winning Netatmo Presence is an outdoor home monitoring camera, which features integration of a floodlight to light up the way at night and also deters any unwanted visitors. Those cameras feature weather-assistance for the outdoor application, and wire-free design for easy installation outside the house. Wearables can be considered as a new kind of home control device for onthe-go convenience. For example, Yale’s Bluetooth smart lock can be controlled wirelessly with a smartphone or Samsung’s smartwatch; Kevo Convert from Kwikset supports Android Wear devices like Moto360 smart watch. Compatible with Apple HomeKit, Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt and Kwikset’s Premis enable users to control their smart locks via Apple Watch or Siri voice control. Users can create integrated scenes with Premis, such as lighting or heating the rooms when the front door is open. If you don’t have a smart watch, you can also control your smart lock with Yale’s userfriendly design. With Yale’s “Twist and Go” technology,

More and more professional security makers are eying on the smart home market for better chances.

users can unlock the deadbolt by twisting the smartphone from the vertical position to the 90-degree when approaching the door. It is estimated that over 70 percent of homeowners enter their home through the garage door. Therefore, smart garage door openers are gaining attention as well. Chamberlain Group works with Nest and has integrated Nest Cam video in Chamberlain and LiftMaster MyQ apps. Users can see live video from their mobile devices when the garage door opens or closes, along with timelapse video clips and event history. Working the Nest thermostat, users can set Home mode or Away mode to turn on and off the heating or cooling when they arrive or leave home.

sensors For Home saFety According to studies, floods are the number one natural disaster in the United States, and water damage causes $9.1 billion in homeowner property losses every year. Burst pipes, leaky toilets, broken water lines and other water-related issues cost American homeowners more than $2,000 for each repair, according to HomeAdvisor. There are new offerings of smart water control for flood and leak warnings, for protection from potential home damages, and to address the concerns with resource conservation. At CES, plenty of sensor makers offered solutions to address these needs. Nortek Security & Control has expanded its GoControl lineup from the alarms to water safety sensors. The company launched Z-Wave irrigation controller, water flow and flood detectors. Piper launched its Z-Wave water sensor to detect the presence or absence of water, detecting as little as 0.03% of an inch of water. Through connection to Piper through Z-Wave, the sensor can be set to trigger security rules. First Alert, a leading CO and smoke alarm sensor provider, provides HomeKit compatible Wi-Fi Environment Monitor that monitors both high and low levels of carbon monoxide (CO), along with humidity and temperature. The company will introduce

28 mySMAhome.com January/February 2016

a FHD 1080P camera with built-in multisensors that detects CO, humidity and temperature. The camera features noncontact measuring of people’s respiration, used as a nursery camera. Leeo Smart Alert is a Wi-Fi plug-in alarm monitoring device that connects to smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. It will alert users via the smartphone when triggered. It can also track temperature and humidity levels in the room. Coming from the professional security background, Tyco Security Products showcase its connected home solutions in its debut appearance at the 2016 CES show with a new glass break sensor With the white noise rejection mechanism, the sensor can avoid false alarm through measuring atmosphere pressure within the room and smart algorithms. Stepping into the smart home market, the security veteran comments simple and intuitive data analysis is amust-have when consumers choose intrusion devices for the smart home. A simple and easy to digest data analysis capability, either native to the intrusion device or through integration with a larger system, can give home owners an accurate snapshot of what is happening in the home right from a smartphone.

Home Control -

More Interoperable and Interactive By Weili Lin

When it comes to smart home control, there are always off-andon discussions about the unchanged condition through all ages – using buttons, dials and switches to operate appliances or home devices. With the evolution of speech recognition technology, voice command services such as Google Now, Amazon Alexa and Apple’s Siri are becoming more widely available. CES this year has revealed the trend that an age of “human voice as the remote controller at home” is coming soon.

control their Z-Wave enabled devices such as door locks, alarm panels, TVs, and music systems with different gestures. Users can set up rules and scenes. Swiping down at bedtime could trigger a ‘Good Night’ scene that turns off the lights, lowers the blinds, locks the front door, and arms the alarm.

IntuItIve Control

More Integrated, easIer Control

With smart home technology making progress, the demand for more intuitive control has risen. Currently, voice or gesture are being used as means for more intuitive control. Amazon Echo is a popular voice command device at CES 2016. Consumers of Vivint and Ooma can connect Amazon Echo to their smart home solution by using the Amazon Alexa app to enable voice control over connected devices like door locks, thermostat, lights, cameras and garage doors. SMK Electronics and Savant both launched voice controllable remotes. SMK Voice Navigator supports voice command powered by Bluetooth LE technology. The voice-activated remote from Savant supports scene setting. The connected lights will turn everything off when the user says “Good night.” Other than voice command, the startup NEEO introduced an intelligent remote controller that features hand recognition technology for easy control of TV, lighting, heating and other connected home devices. With looks similar to a TV remote controller but with more sophistication in design, the NEEO remote recognizes the user when they pick it up and displays the user’s favorite content instantly. The remote supports major home automation standards, including Bluetooth LE (Low Energy), Wi-Fi, 6LowPAN, Z-Wave, ready for Threadand ZigBee. Also, it features full control for Apple TV, Sonos, Nest, Philips Hue and cable boxes from Cablevision, Verizon and Comcast. Fibaro launched Swipe, a wireless gesture control pad. User can

Manufacturers seek broader partnerships to bring simplicity to customers and increase the interoperability as well to expand the global presence. Compared to CES 2015, we see more and more complete solutions are designed to control all the connected devices via one single platform this year. Bosch demonstrated its smart-home system for the first time at the show, including smart home controller, a smart thermostat, and a contact for doors and windows to provide convenience and safety. When the door or window is open, the system can automatically turn down the heating in the relevant room, in line with the user’s preference settings. The Vinli Home Connect platform brings compatible connected home platforms together into one interface, including Icontrol Networks, Nest, and Samsung SmartThings and with the connected car. The connected car is considered as an extension of the smart home, or so-called the second home. When the homeowner

Key Components Design Trends from Semiconductor Specialists By Weili Lin

Semiconductor companies are enablers and accelerators for the growth of the IoT industry. Connectivity and video monitoring ICs are thriving segments in the smart home space. Taking an agnostic approach to wireless technologies, the vendors who provide connectivity ICs prefer tosupport multiple wireless communication protocols for better interoperability among connected devices. We’ve seen lots of new solutions supporting ZigBee 3.0, BLE Mesh and Thread launched in early 2016. Besides, low-power consumption and voice control are two key features for the new announcements.

Thread Works WiTh ZigBee Thread has its first stand at CES this year. The group itself rattled the market by introducing product certification program to the market in 2015. At CES 2016, the 227 active member partners currently under its belt made a buzz with Thread enabled products. According to the group, Thread is a wireless network stack based on open standards, and no licenses or royalty fees is required for developers to use the software stack. Furthermore, the ZigBee Alliance and the Thread Group established a liaison agreement in April 2015 for bringing ZigBee’s widely deployed applications library to the newly developed Thread networking protocol. The cooperation helps to streamline product development, improves interoperability and enhances consumer’s experience. NXP offers smart home development and evaluation solutions. Its reference designs for lighting products support Thread, ZigBee 3.0, BLE and NFC technologies. The company provides a turnkey solution incorporating NFC technology for tap and connect commissioning, used for occupancy and motion sensors, smart plugs, smoke detectors and various nodes from global partners. GreenPeak Technologies GP712 is the industry’s first radio communication controller to support ZigBee and Thread in a single device with fully independent channel selection – at the cost of a single protocol solution. It simultaneously supports up to three

40 mySMAhome.com January/February 2016

network protocols in a concurrent and transparent way on different channels and allows interoperability between ZigBee PRO, ZigBee RF4CE and Thread.

Cloud Platform & Software Services

Enabling Interoperability and Creating Value By Weili Lin

Interoperability remains up in the air. Solid cloud platforms provide a feasible way to unify the fragmented smart home landscape. Unified smart home solutions provide consumers convenience; fragmented smart home market provides business opportunities for players. The platform providers try to monetize by creating value for their customers and speeding up time to market.

Software and cloud platform providers are developing solutions to enable interoperability among devices, regardless of what protocols their customers are using. They are protocol- and device-agnostic, and seek partnerships for cloud-to-cloud interoperation because they believe cooperation can enlarge the ecosystems of connected products and expand distribution channels. Manufacturers of connected products and service providers benefit from cost savings and time to market. They can expand their distribution channels to include additional retailers or service providers; the retailers and service providers can quickly add connected products to their portfolios. To accelerate time to market and ensure compatibility, they offer reference designs for hardware companies. Zonoff creates hardware reference designs for hubs and gateway devices, enabling consumer electronics companies and OEMs to accelerate the manufacture process and ensure those hubs can communicate with any IoT device. They also work with semiconductor companies like Atmel, Marvell, NXP and Sigma Designs, and offer reference applications. For example, Zonoff provides Z1 Software Suite to chip vendors who can demonstrate their reference smart home solutions to the

44 mySMAhome.com January/February 2016

market with the software. David Friedman, CEO and cofounder of Ayla Networks mentioned that manufacturers realized the IoT is not a technology issue but rather a transformational process for all aspects of their businesses. Zonoff and Ayla Networks established IoT cloud-tocloud partnership to accelerate the transformation for manufacturers, retailers, service providers, and other players in the marketplace.

Interoperable on Common platform CentraLite Systems introduced Jilia, a cloud-based IoT framework that allows developers to create IoT connectivity between smart devices using a single API framework. It is challenging and costly to build a cloud-based infrastructure to link a large number of connected devices. Jilia provides an affordable way via a single API. Jilia is brand- , platform- , and protocol-agnostic, so that connected devices and apps developed with Jilia can communicate with all other devices via any existing protocol like ZigBee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Thread. To allow products from different brands to sync seamlessly, DSR has developed IoTicity portfolio, which acts as a platform to provide cloud and gateway management as well as iOS and Android

apps for controlling and monitoring smart devices. The company’s ZBOSS 3.0 supports IEEE 802.15.4 chipsets that operate at either the global 2.4 GHz frequency standard or regional sub 1GHz frequencies. The Icontrol Developer Program provides a common platform for device makers, app developers, and service creators to create interoperable devices and services. Developers will benefit from a streamlined integration process and increased flexibility while maintaining controls over any cloud-based, ZigBee, Wi-Fi or Z-Wave device and Icontrol-powered solutions.

How to Create Value Selling additional services like video monitoring and cloud storage has been a popular way to generate new revenue streams. ADT Canopy was launched as a Security-as-a-Service solution at CES this year to strengthen its presence in the consumer market, to be available this spring. It is a flexible month-to-month and contract-free 24/7 professional monitoring services to popular wearable devices, connected hubs, life safety products and point devices. By working with hardware suppliers like LG, Samsung SmartThings and Wink, users can access ADT Canopy directly through those vendors’ mobile app for the services. ADT Canopy will offer three services – Panic for immediate emergency response, Intrusion for intruder alert, and Life Safety for fire, smoke and CO2 detection and notification. Users can have instant access to emergency assistance with in-app panic buttons. Data analytics service becomes a noteworthy ways for monetization, enabling more effective product development and resource allocation. Zonoff Insight and Arrayent Connect Platform provide big data analytics to help their customers to understand consumers’ behaviors and interests. Zonoff Insights can identify marketing and up-sell opportunities, enable better risk management, and reveal geographic distribution of products and channels. Arrayent Connect Platform is designed to create

unified connection capabilities among end devices, software and the cloud. The platform provides target marketing and advertising based on consumer’s usage patterns and products. Also, the platform helps customers to find new market opportunities by analyzing consumer buying behaviors and product usage patterns. With the platform, companies can understand customer demands for new features and product updates. Creating great user experience could be essential. The end users don’t really care about the brand and manufacturer of a door lock; what they care about is the experience that door lock provides. PlumChoice’s indicated that the end users are more likely to purchase the smart home products when they can imagine themselves benefiting from that solution. The company's strategy is to help companies reduce the number of returns that are coming back to retails due to lack of understanding of those particular solutions, and minimizes no-fault-found returns. Those can help the companies create unique user experiences and brand equity. The company helps their partners to provide unique customer engagement, particularly around pre-sale and sales engagement, and tells them how to bring these products to market in a manner that the end user can understand the value.

Uptake for Product Developers SMAhome’s

By Veronica Chen

True to its moniker, CES 2016 was indeed a hallmark of the world’s largest consumer electronics show that housed all kinds of innovative launches and technological marvels. Shifting the show focuses from mobile devices, CES presents itself a better observation desk for innovative solutions in virtual reality, gaming, connected vehicles, drones, and IoT-related gadgets. Meanwhile, smart home was absolutely one of the highlights. Having interviewed dozens of smart home related exhibitors at the mammoth showground, SMAhome has summarized five uptakes that may influence smart home developments and we believe product developers should know.

1. Professional security sPecialists eye smart home As home security has ranked the top reason why users are interested in smart home, professional security makers are eyeing this market as an untapped business opportunity. American leading security brands such as Honeywell, Tyco, Swann, First Alert, and so forth have all booked big show spaces at CES to demonstrate their new offerings. Compared to other suppliers from different professional backgrounds, these professional security specialists have their edges in the security technology design of their smart home offerings, because they have the multiple field experiences learned from many security projects. However, smart home is all about solutions, which consist of cross-brand devices, software, and even cloud services syncing together. Security pros who are used to closed-type system should watch out the current inclination to the openness in smart home. And the aesthetic design of products should not be overlooked.

2. far from being “Diy-frienDly” SMAhome is seeing a major part of smart home exhibits at

48 mySMAhome.com January/February 2016

CES this year still needing professional installation or integration services. Furthermore, when asked exhibitors what was their best sales channel, more than half of the respondents reflected that the retail sector did not perform as well as they had anticipated, while the revenue generated from professional channels or projects came out the most. It is obvious that the majority of real smart home businesses currently still rely on professional projects of builders, construction companies or house renovators. “Not-so-DIY-friendly” may hamper the adoption rate of smart home in the afterbuilder market, because it can levy extra costs of ownership to users. Yet, it should be noted that home appliance brands are launching their connected home ecosystems such as Bosch,

Siemens, Whirlpool, Panasonic’s ORA, LG’s SmartThinq, Samsung’s SmartThing and ChangHong’s IPP. With their ongoing market promotions and new business partnerships with service providers in home insurance, utility or MSOs, the transition into a “consumer technology-oriented” smart home can be faster than we expect.

3. ‘Working With nest’ is the hyPe Thanks to the release of Nest Weave last October, “working with Nest” was hugely prevalent during CES this year. While Nest Weave enables direct device-to-device communication across networks in the home, including Wi-Fi and Thread, developers now have an end-to-end solution that enables them to work with Nest, and can use only parts of the program that meet their needs. According to Nest, Nest Weave solves many issues associated with connecting products in the home, including the ability to connect power-constrained devices as well as devices that require low latency and redundancy. More than 11,000 developers have accessed Nest’s APIs to connect with Nest products through the cloud – and 1 in 8 Nest homes are using a “Works with Nest” integration. For OEMs and

other Asian makers that are interested in the US market but suffer from integration difficulties, this program may serve as a solution.

4. sensitive to Data value Rather than highlighting the technology, there is an array of smart home exhibitors shifting the focus on data collected by connected sensors or other devices, and smart applications such as behavior pattern recognition built by the data analyses of the self-learning algorithm on the IoT platform. The sensitivity to data value is turning smart home from a bunch of “nice-to-have” products into a “must-have” life helper. Not only giving the home owner the accurate info of what is happening, the solution can also provide a precaution to possible incidents or any abnormal situations. Another scene setting pace at CES were Icontrol, Arrayent, DSR, Alya and many other IoT or M2M platform designers who displayed their novelties in front of end customers. By collaborating different-background partners’ mini stands together in the booth, platform designers not only showed the

RepoRt

extensibility of their ecosystem to potential OEM platform adopters, device makers and key component providers, but also helped educate the market about IoT platform values for data collection and analyses and infinite application possibilities. The direct consumer promotion is much in the same way of “Intel inside,” educating both retail sales associates and consumers about the value of Intel microprocessors, and to explain them the differences between the microprocessors" - without the technical jargon.

5. consensus on DisruPtive stanDarDs The rule of innovation has been delivering a faith in the power of an “open standard”, a technology protocol that is not controlled by a single player in the ecosystem but is the result of a — more or less — open process involving any interested party. And there’s a lot to be said for openness. Sadly, not all open standards spur innovation, and not all innovative standards are open. Without surprises, smart home protocols and groups including ZigBee, Z-Wave, Thread, ULE, and Allseen Alliance were having their joint booths at CES 2016 to emphasize their leading status in the market. When commenting on the market, these representatives all expressed similar perspectives – too many smart home protocols that give hurdles to market development. At CES this year, there were still no indication on who the

winner is, but the emergence of standards has begun to surface, as exemplified by the cooperation between ZigBee 3.0 and EnOcean. In addition to technical convergence, the standard cooperation brings benefits to members of both parties to extend the product application and thus business opportunities. If you were at Central Hall, LVCC during CES, you would see newcomers from the accessory industry launching new product lines that are smart home related. VOXX Accessories Corporation’s Project Nursery and Xtreme’s Simple Home are some of the examples. Instead of ZigBee or Z-Wave, these newcomers have deployed 2.4GHz, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in their new smart home lineups. According to them, the common standards have been widely accepted by mass users, who cares about the easy setup, manage and reasonable cost no matter what technologies are used inside the products.

Thank you for dropping by! SMAhome at CES 2016

And last year, we launched mozaiq operations, a joint venture with ABB and Cisco. Our goal here is to establish a B2B software platform for the smart home, which will be open to suppliers from widely differing sectors. Ultimately, we believe that no company will be able to create the connected world alone.

Smart Home Needs

Education Time and

By Weili Lin

SMAhome has had the pleasure to talk with Greg Roberts, VP of Marketing of Icontrol Networks to share his viewpoints on 2016 smart home trends about the technology and market development.

What is the mostly wanted among smart home in North America so far? We’ve found that DIY (Do-ItYourself) vs. DIFM (Do-it-for-me) are two different audiences, so it depends on who you are targeting. According to our 2015 State of the Smart Home Report, those aged 45 and younger are more likely to prefer DIY and are likely to spend between $2,000 and $3,000 to upgrade their home to a smart home. This audience prefers to shop for smart home products at a security (17%) or technology (19%) company or a home repair store (14%). Those above the age of 45 tend to like more assistance with the setup of their smart home devices and are likely to spend less than $500 to upgrade their

home to a smart home. This audience prefers to shop at a cable/telecommunications company (25%) or security company (20%).

Icontrol One targets independent dealers. What are their demands? The key for dealers is education. Not only should they be educated on the smart home but they should be able to educate their customers and position themselves as experts. Dealers should work closely with their smart home provider to stay informed on the latest technologies and features. This will help them remain a step ahead of their competition.

For security dealers, what are your suggestions? Home automation is an untapped opportunity for security dealers, and one we believe they should pursue. For the second year in a row, our 2015 State of the Smart Home Report found security remains the number one motivating factor behind smart home purchases, with nearly seven out of ten (65%) consumers hesitant to purchase a home automation system without security features. Our report also found 20% of those aged 45 and above prefer to shop for smart home products at a security company and would like more assistance with setup compared to their younger counterparts. Although those younger than 45 prefer a more DIY centric

What consumers are likely to purchase within the next 12 months: Adults aged 25-34 system, 17% still prefer to shop at a security company. If implemented correctly, security dealers have an opportunity to increase sales with home automation.

What are the big benefits of adopting Icontrol Developer Program? The Icontrol Developer Program is a global program that enables compatibility between any cloudbased, ZigBee, Wi-Fi or Z-Wave device and Icontrol-powered solutions. Icontrol-powered security and service providers can offer their customers more device options, and those options can be controlled from a single user experience without bringing technology or compatibility into the conversation. Developers will benefit from a streamlined integration process, and increased flexibility while maintaining control over the device user experience

Are you convinced voice control and multi-functional to be the two big trends in smart home? Voice-user interface to the connected home will grow. More and more people are becoming comfortable with voice applications like Siri or Google Now and devices like the Amazon Echo. Voice control for connected home is a natural interface that we think will gain some interest in 2016. There is still a lot of work to be done to make the experience intuitive, but we know there are many innovators working on furthering this technology. People want one system to perform many tasks. Think about it like your smartphone. You don’t want to use 20 apps daily, rather you’d like to have one or two that allow you to accomplish the same tasks. Simplicity and multi-functional devices will prevail as mass market adoption occurs for the smart home.

Are there any untapped opportunities of smart home? Yes, elder care is an untapped opportunity for the smart home. Our report found that nearly 50% of consumers would sleep better at night if their parents or grandparents had a smart home – a number significantly higher among younger generations, as well as those who identify themselves as parents. Consumer preferences and needs will determine what devices will become common. But according to our report, consumers reported they are most likely to buy a connected home camera (37%), connected thermostat (37%) and connected lighting (34%) in the next twelve months.

Do you see any other trends for the smart home industry? Two trends stand out. First, interoperability and communication standards. We don’t see one sole smart home standard, at least not in the foreseeable future. The industry will require multiple standards to take advantage of the current marketplace and technology structure. That doesn’t mean to say one standard won’t lead the way in the long term, but today, there is still a need for multiple standards in the market that work best for different use cases. Second, we will see big companies (like Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, and LG) continue to “experiment” with smart home technologies by releasing different products or features that approach the space in different ways. This will lead to more awareness of smart home as a category of the bigger IoT space.

What will help smart home market to grow in a faster pace? The real smart living revolution hasn’t happened yet, and we are in the very early stages of adoption. The market’s growth depends greatly on two things: consumer understanding of what a smart home is and how they can benefit from it; and manufacturers making products that are easy to use and solve every day problems. For the first, consumer education is key. The people in the smart home industry have been “in the weeds” for a long time, and now we need to make sure we’re talking about smart home in a way that makes sense to anyone and everyone. That means reducing jargon, and highlighting the many different benefits smart home can provide. For the second, we just need time. Much like a smartphone and its apps, we will eventually see a robust, automated ecosystem that incorporates multiple connected devices and addresses multiple use cases. Just like smartphones, the products started out bulky and not visual appealing, but over time as the phones become smarter and people knew how to use them, the design become more natural. We believe this will happen with smart home as generates mainstream appeal.

Ambarella Talks about

Home Security By Weili Lin

Trends

Ambarella is a leading SoC developer, providing low-power and high-definition (HD) compression and image processing solutions for professional and consumer applications, including security IP cameras, wearable cameras, flying cameras and automotive video processing solutions. Its camera SoCs for smart home solutions are supplied to service providers such as Comcast and AT&T, and to leading retail brands such as Nest, D-Link, Netgear, Canary, August, Samsung and more.

SMAhome team interviewed Jerome Gigot, Director of Marketing at Ambarella during CES 2016. He talked about the Company’s latest IC technology and gave his observations on the home security camera market as well as the smart home industry. Gigot focused on four major market trends, including battery-powered cameras, smarter motion detection to save storage and bandwidth, higher video resolution and lower video bitrates, as well as the trend towards more and more devices integrating cameras such as video doorbells, connected switches and lights.

What are Ambarella’s strengths? To differentiate ourselves from our competitors, we offer state-of-the-

art technologies with a focus on video quality instead of just price competition. We have introduced industry leading solutions for drones, IP-cameras and sports cameras, including pioneering 4K Ultra HD solutions. We also like to push the envelope. At this year’s CES, we demonstrated one of our customer’s VR (Virtual Reality) solutions as well as computer vision technology for automotive ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) as used in self-driving cars.

What are the major IC design trends for IP cameras and home monitoring applications? Please introduce your product development plans for 2016. We launched the S3L SoC family for security IP cameras in October 2015. S3L brings the low bit rate benefits of H.265 to both Cloud-based home monitoring and mainstream professional cameras. We expect H.265 to begin volume shipments in China in 2016, and in other geographic regions in subsequent years. We believe that the H.265 format will be mainstream in the coming years, and adopted later this year or next year for consumer security. On the home security camera side, we have S3L for the high-performance consumer monitoring cameras and S3LM for the lower-cost models. In the professional IP security camera market we have S3, which includes our 4K Ultra HD

We see increasing demand for analytics for smarter cameras and H.265 technology for lower bit rates. Ambarella video doorbell supports face recognition

video capability. We also see increasing demand for analytics for smarter cameras, H.265 technology for lower bitrates, as well as continued interest in improved low light, HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging, smart zoom capability and wide-angle lens support. We see the video doorbell camera emerging as a new category with features like 180-degree wide-angle viewing and image de-warping. In addition to hardware, Ambarella supports a number of third-party software vendors that focus on both Cloud storage and analytics. Amongst others, these include Acer, Sighthound, and IntelliVision. For example, our SoC reference design for the video doorbell camera works with Acer’s Cloud platform with integrated face recognition. This design provides higher security and convenience; registered persons are permitted entry

without using a key or smartphone. For this design, accurate face recognition and a secure embedded system are critical. This is part of a broader trend of IP camera SoCs becoming smarter, more secure and more powerful. Analytics are key, because if you don’t have good analytics, you will end up recording hours or even days of useless videos. When we talk about Cloud services, we think about storage of recorded videos and bandwidth. We work with Tier-1 service providers and telcos to whom bandwidth savings are crucial. Our S3L SoC offers SmartHEVC, which divides the required bitrate by two and cuts the storage cost in half at the same time. SmartHEVC is Ambarella’s own advanced optimization of H.265 and is tuned for typical surveillance scenes, offering additional and significant bandwidth savings over regular H.265. It’s a very valuable proposition for our customers.

What are other benefits for adopting Ambarella’s SoC besides low bit rate? S3L also features multi-exposure HDR imaging, 180-degree fisheye lens correction, low-light capability, ultra-low power, improved bitrate and a high performance CPU for intelligent video analytics. On the imaging side, low light capability and HDR processing are key technologies that Ambarella has developed across product lines from sports to automotive to IP cameras. Our SoCs also enable de-warping of images for support of wide angle lenses, and are very low power, allowing high resolution designs with small form factors as well as battery powered designs that can be placed anywhere.

Do you think the batterypowered wireless cameras will become mainstream in the home security camera market? Battery-powered models and integrated IoT solutions such as doorbell cameras and cameras integrated into light fittings are driving the market. Battery-powered cameras are already among the best-selling models. Customers like the ability to place cameras in locations where it is difficult to run power cables to them, for example in high places or outdoors.

Since the outdoor cameras are getting popular, is there any distinguishable difference between the indoor and outdoor cameras in terms of design directions? The key differences between indoor and outdoor cameras are the mechanical parts, like casing design and battery power. Outdoor cameras need to be weather and tamper proof, have HDR processing due to direct sunlight, be able to operate in high and low temperatures and have at least six months of battery life. We’ve incorporated smart analytics into our SoCs for battery powered designs. Our S3L-based cameras for battery-powered designs are asleep most of the time, and will only wake up when triggered on motion. When the image sensor detects something, the CPU quickly boots and starts to analyze what’s happening. It can filter out false alarms, caused for example, by birds or shadows. If something important is happening, the camera will turn on in less than 500ms, and, for instance, send a clip of the video to a users’ smartphone. The key advantage is that the camera can determine if the motion was relevant and if not, go back to sleep right away. This way, battery is significantly extended compared to other solutions 60 mySMAhome.com January/February 2016

n S3L is designed for the high-performance consumer monitoing camera, S3LM is designed for the lower-cost models.

that do not have the ability to run analytics locally on the SoC. If you put an IP camera outside your home, you need a pretty long range. We see Wi-Fi as the most widely adopted technology so far and therefore use Wi-Fi for wireless communication.

When can we expect to see a 4K UHD home security camera available in the market? Will Ambarella launch the solution in 2016? The security market traditionally follows trends in consumer electronics. Today, 4K is standard in televisions and many smartphones. We believe consumers will soon expect 4K in home security cameras. We have been shipping 4K into the professional IP camera market for about two years now and recently announced our S3L and S3Lm 4K solutions for home monitoring. We may see the first 4K home monitoring cameras next year. The benefits of adopting 4K video technology include wider field of view, much better zoom capabilities, more accurate analytics and more advanced motion detection. While using a 4K home security camera can be challenging because of its high bandwidth, we think users can record locally with 4K video quality, and stream videos in 1080P resolution only. Also, using Ambarella’s H.265 video compression technology provides up to twice the video compression of Ambarella’s H.264 encoding technology, and delivers high video quality at very low bit rates. This improvement results in cost savings from reduced storage requirements and the ability to stream higher quality video over bandwidth-restricted networks. With our H.265, Ambarella-based designs can stream 4K video in under 2 Megabits per second, which is very low, though still a bit higher than transmitting in 1080P.

Which applications are the most promising like energy management, climate control, safety, security, access control and appliances? Will Ambarella enter these fields in addition to the IP camera and home monitoring applications? To date, our focus has been on video cameras, i.e. cameras that capture video to be watched later by humans. However there is also another class of cameras we call “sensing” cameras, which capture video purely for analyzing and extracting data from the image. For example, at the ISC West security show in April 2015, we demonstrated a camera for retail shops that could count people and provide feedback to the retailers about where people spent their time. In the future, we expect that sensing cameras will support a number of home applications and those typically require very low power, analytics and good imaging in challenging lighting conditions.

The manufacTuring base for smarT home professionals worldwide Quite unlike the other smart home related trade fairs around the world, SMAhome International Conference and Exhibition 2016, to be held during April 19-21 in Taipei, Taiwan, positions itself to meet the professional business requirements distinctively for home security and smart home supply chains. SMAhome show is organized by SMAhome magazine publisher, Messe Frankfurt New Era Business Media since 2015. Being profoundly experienced in show organization, the company organizes Secutech Expo, a professional security exhibition since 1998, in concurrent with SMAhome show at the interlinked exhibition hall. By holding the two shows together, Ms. Regina Tsai, Deputy General Manager of the organizer said: “Home security is expected to remain one of the strongest sectors within the entire security industry in the next five to 10 years.”

Why it iS So unique As there are many common and converging aspects between security and smart home, a big part of the original security equipment manufacturers at Secutech, such as intrusion alarm, IP camera and intercom makers, have since been working with international smart home brands or service providers. Given the nature of security markets – the project based business, these security manufacturers at Secutech such as Amroad, Competition, Unitech, Starvedia, GKB, Vision-Elec., Lilin, Vivotek, etc., are experienced

with the technology supports and tailor-made services in the international markets. Visitors who source for manufacturing partnerships are able to find the solutions that cater to various needs of system integrators or service providers in your local markets. In addition to security makers, SMAhome beckons an array of first-time exhibitors to the show, including professional manufacturers with backgrounds in computer, multimedia, networking, and software design, such as ASUS, Acer, TrendMicro, CAP-Tech, Dexatek, Home8, Nietzsche, and among several others. In line with Taiwan’s superior IT framework, Networks and IC industries, Taiwan manufacturers are known globally for their competitive edge in production efficiency and high quality. These newcomers at SMAhome show are specialized in the integration of lighting, window covering controls, thermostats, and various sensors, such as temperature, humidity, and gas detection.

THE SYNCING OF WI-FI AND OTHER WIRELESS COMMUNICATION STANDARDS INSIDE THE SMART HOME PRODUCTS IS A KNOW-HOW THAT TAIWANESE MAKERS HAVE BEEN INVESTING THEIR EFFORTS ON.

To accomplish the integration, the new intelligent smart home technologies such as cloud management, low-cost gateway and gateway management, and iOS and Android apps are used for controlling and monitoring smart devices. Based on SMAhome’s observation, Taiwanese smart home manufacturers are able to churn out state-of-the-art wireless devices and high-value-added solutions. “A majority of existing smart home products are based on wireless communication. For the majority of products, they need to be Wi-Ficompatible. In terms of the consistency and stability of the Wi-Fi connection, Taiwan’s products are outstanding. Besides features, the syncing of Wi-Fi and other wireless communication standards inside the smart home products is a know-how that Taiwanese makers have been investing their efforts on,” commented Veronica Chen, editor-in-chief of SMAhome magazine. To date, over 150 leading manufacturers from China, Korea and Taiwan have already signed up for SMAhome Expo. Tsai added: “We are anticipating over 26,000 system integrators, dealers, distributers and industry professionals to visit the fair. With the range and high quality of participating exhibitors on offer, I am confident visitors will not only discover a wealth of solutions and products but will also find ample opportunities to establish new and invaluable industry partnerships.”

the FirSt Z-WAve gAllery dedicAted to originAl MAnuFActuring Z-Wave Alliance will organize its first gallery at SMAhome show. According to the alliance, they have selected around 10 members to demonstrate their new smart home launches at the event. “The participating companies are all with product design and manufacture management capabilities. If you are looking for quality and experienced Z-wave partners based in Taiwan and China, do come to this show and this gallery.” Meanwhile, other well-known protocol standards such as ZigBee, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Homeplug should not to be overlooked, as several exhibitors have already booked their presence to launch their smart homerelated products in Taipei.

M2M PlAtForM iS the hyPe In smart home, every type of business has different software needs. SMAhome understands this, and has designed the “Smart home M2M platform & software summit 2016” as one of the conference events. The speaker lineup is comprised of open source IoT projects specialists, connected device platform suppliers, smart home software stacks developers, cloudbased video solution providers as well as other application software designers. By gathering more than 10 Taiwan and Chinabased platform designers to the event, system integrators and other types of international visitor will be able to source the IoT platform solutions that shorten time-to-market and effectively scale their engineering and management team. Ayla Networks, Tricloud, Obweb, Mivatek, Throughtek, Qlync, Raylios are some of the several host speakers at the event. They will present and discuss industry hot topics such as connectivity, interoperability, data protection and business models. “We are ready to demonstrate the best of smart home manufacturing to international professionals,” Tsai said.

Broadband Forum Chairman: operators Need to get g.fast right Operators need to get G.fast right if they want to take advantage of the huge opportunity available to enable and deliver up-and-coming technologies to consumers, the Chairman of Broadband Forum (and General Manager Access and CPE Innovation at BT) warned. Kevin Foster said the full potential of all the innovative technology will only be enabled quickly and effectively if operators make real headway on G.fast deployments. The ITU-T's G.9701 (G.fast) specification is designed to provide gigabit broadband connection speeds (up to 1Gbps) over a single twisted pair cable in an existing copper infrastructure. It allows faster deployment of services by enabling the introduction of plug-and-play remote DPUs and G.fast CPE devices self-installed by customers at home.

The smart home mass adoption has been hurdled by too many standards existing in the market. Michael Hurlston, Executive Vice President, Broadcom Corporation By Veronica Chen

Broadcom: Having One More Standard is Not Good for Smart Home

According to Hurlston, in the IoT arena, there are two fundamental layers, the driver and application. Semiconductor companies like Broadcom play the key role that supplies the best possible technology solution to makers. The application layer is dominated by software designing companies. On the driver layer, Broadcom wants to be as flexible as possible, so that OEMs do not need to have heavy technical backups or efforts. As such, makers can shorten their time to market, which is very critical in the current IoT competition. At CES 2016, Broadcom Corporation announced a range of consumer As the IoT continues to evolve, more and more innovations optimized to enhance connectivity in the home. One of the applications are being developed. Software is therefore highlights at the show is the BCM4908, which includes the pioneering getting more heavyweight in smart home. “But it does 1.8GHz 64Bit quad-core ARM CPU and Broadcom's Runner network not mean that Broadcom recruits as many software packet processor to deliver more than 5 Gbps of system data throughput partners as possible,” Hurlston commented. Finding without taxing the CPU. The BCM4908 enables OEMs and service the right partner with a rich domain know-how and providers to deliver the extra CPU power needed for smart home and competitive engineering strength is more important. Internet of Things applications while unleashing the higher Internet speeds Broadcom now has its innovation office in Shanghai to coming into the home. make sure Broadcom IoT solutions sync well with its IoT partners. Hurlston sees Broadcom as an enabling Best Partner to OEMs link in the long chain of startups, application developers, “We want to be the best partner to OEMs,” Michael Hurlston said, consumer electronics manufactures, module makers and executive vice president of worldwide sales at Broadcom Corporation. cloud integrators that are coming together to build out a more nuanced IoT ecosystem. One of Broadcom’s software partners in the smart home is TriClouds. At CES, TriClouds demonstrated an integrated smart home solution, consisting of smart water leakage, doorbell, smart plug, smoke detector, IP camera and other devices for better energy saving and comfortable lifestyle. “Low power battery design and video running on Broadcom WICED makes sensors or detectors easily to be residential alarms and alerts via mobile phone for building up a safe home environment. “ said Daphne Chen, VP and co-founder of TriClouds.

Finding the right partner with a rich domain know-how and competitive engineering strength is more important.

As Open as Possible However, forming a special alliance or group to build an ecosystem is not in the Broadcom’s roadmap at this moment. “The smart home mass adoption has been hurdled by too many standards existing in the market. Users are confused and do not know how to choose,” Hurlston said. In his perspective, having one more alliance or standard is not helpful to the real market development. “What we can do is to keep our solution on the driver layer as open as possible.” Hurlston took the WICED CORE ELP Bluetooth family as an example. It supports simultaneous multi-protocols and is currently the industry's first 40nm flash memory in a communications SoC, low-power consumption and a common development platform. "In addition to enabling multi-protocol support, WICED supports more complex IoT applications for OEMs and developers, all the while consolidating our low-power solution in a small package."

Needless to say, a majority of consumers today are unfamiliar with the smart home. And that is the problem. Anatoli Pechkov, CEO of DSR Corporation By Veronica Chen

DSR: Smart home players need to create ‘habit’ to achieve real market results As more new smart devices appear, the same stumbling blocks remain – a hodgepodge of protocols that continues to confuse consumers to no end. To date, the connected world is awash with more than half a dozen smart home systems — like Apple HomeKit, Samsung’s SmartThings, Lowe’s Iris, and AllJoyn — using a variety of wireless protocols, such as WiFi, ZigBee, and Z-Wave. To make matters more complex, that is just a partial list. DSR Corporation, a US-based software development company, understands that, and has since been working relentlessly to form corporate partnerships and developing software solutions to achieve real market results. The company has been tapped by the ZigBee® Alliance

The largest barrier is the technological fragmentation of the smart home ecosystem, in which consumers need multiple networking devices, apps and more to build and run their smart home.

to showcase the seamless interoperability between certified ZigBee home automation products of Bosch, Centralite, FeiBit, Legrand, OSRAM, Philips, Ubisys, and Xinghuoyuan Group at CES 2016. “Needless to say, a majority of consumers today are unfamiliar with the smart home. And that is the problem,” Anatoli Pechkov said, CEO of DSR Corporation. Pechkov pointed out to SMAhome that users are still in a phase where they need to acquire the habit of adopting smart devices to their home, as the same strategy was used for the rapid adoption of smartphones “The situation is reminiscence of when smart phones were first introduced to the market over a decade ago, and at a time when the percentage of touchscreen cellphones was relatively low,” he explained. “Consistency is critical if you want to make a habit stick. In other words, we need to pursue the efforts to educate users about the smart home.” What’s more, the conundrum is further restricted in that retailers aren’t doing enough to help promulgate smart home adoption. “What we are seeing today is that there is a lot of hype about the smart home, but companies are not doing enough to help market them. Another factor to consider is the price,” the CEO said, noting an example of Home Depot, whose smart home sales didn’t go down too well because their prices were set too high. In retrospect, there are still many barriers preventing mass-market smart home adoption: high device prices, limited consumer demand and long device replacement cycles. However, the largest barrier is the technological fragmentation of the smart home ecosystem, in which consumers need multiple networking devices, apps and more to build and run their smart home. Hence, the general consensus as explained by Anatoli Pechkov during an interview at CES 2016 is that mass smart home adoption will come at some undefined future date. “Companies in the connected home field will need to focus on their application field, including software, so that they can help drive the market,” he concluded.

simplify people's demands for a connected home. We focus primarily on lighting solutions because we believe that they offer huge potential with respect to their global market share,” he said, adding that it aims to become the expert in the field of lighting. During the four-day technology bonanza, Jasco unveiled new GE branded Bluetooth Smart Controls, the industry's first Bluetooth Smart Mesh home control ecosystem. With no Wi-Fi or hub required, it is no surprise the affordable and easyto-use Bluetooth Smart controls are seeing one of the quickest and more successful launches in mesh-networking. At the Jasco’s booth, the next generation of Z-Wave Plus home automation products were on display. Powered by the latest advancements in Z-Wave technology, the new products revealed consisted of Z-Wave Plus Smart Door Sensors, Z-Wave Plus In-Wall Smart Motion Switches and dimmers. Jasco also unveiled an expanded line of universal USB charging solutions including a new line of USB-C cables at CES 2016. This latest generation of universal chargers deliver up to 40 percent faster charging speed than other 5.0V/5W chargers on the market today. Jasco's line of GE branded USB-C cables will be available for both at home wall chargers and on-the-go car chargers and will be available in early 2016. When asked about the hodgepodge of protocols currently available on the market today, Trice indicated that there's simply been too much confusion, too many acronyms and wireless protocols and competing standards, for a smart-home system to be widely adopted. “Until we unify our standards, the industry will not capitalize on the full potential of the smart home growth. If we can consolidate a unified industry standard, the market will grow more quickly,” Trice exclaimed.
