EDITOR’S NOTE

ALL-IN-ONE, A MATTER OF TIME In the previous issue, we talked about all-inone cameras and received some response. One interesting dialog is about the business reality of all-in-one products in the smart home market nowadays. With multiple functions in one device, allin-one products are meant to save users’ money. They do not need to buy several devices for the same performance featured in a single all-in-one product. For example, the set-top box (STB) for a smart home can also function as the smart home gateway by embedding higher-end connection, controlling chips and modules into it. But one industry player from the key component field told me, “To me, the majority of sales is still the general solutions now. The acceptance of higher-end products grows slowly in realty.” I consulted some gateway and STB OEM/ODM makers in Taiwan. Their clients are telecommunications (telcos) or multi-services operators in the U.S. and Europe. It’s true; the demand for STBs with smart home gateway functions is not there yet. In many markets, the box is commonly complimentary for their mobile or content subscribers. To most operators, the STB cost can be a concern. Without the obvious demands, OEM/ODM makers are hesitating to develop the hybrid products. While manufacturers are facing the dilemma of promoting all-in-one products at this moment, it’s only a matter of time before such products taking off. Users always long for convenient solutions, and just like what we mention in the Platform subject for this issue’s Exploration on Page 17 -- service providers will have to probe into users’ needs to provide niche services, so that they can keep competitiveness in the markets.

understands the hustle and bustle of an everyday family life, so in response the company has been offering the starter kit for smartphones to meet their needs. When users leave their homes, all lights, smart devices and home appliances will turn off automatically. When they come back home and approach the front door, they can unlock the door via NFC-enabled mobile phones. What welcomes them are their favorite music from connected Wi-Fi speakers, preferred indoor temperature and fresh air from air purifiers. The smart IR controller let users to remotely control home appliances like lights, air conditioners and water heaters for energy-saving and comfort lives with the mobile app on their smartphones.

STANDARD UNIFICATION AND INDUSTRY COOPETITION On top of product design trends, Peng shared her observations on the smart home industry. Peng predicts the smart home will embrace explosive growth over the next few years in China after entrance of leading companies of home appliances, Internet service providers, and online retails. “Big brands are influential to consumers because they are wellknown consumer brands. Also, they have giant customer bases, amounting to hundreds and millions of users,” Peng

explained. She believes cross-industry cooperation, kind of coopetition, is the key to success. “By far, smart home security and automation products are nice-haves, but not must-haves in China. However, smart home products are value-added to the living necessities. We believe making our products affordable, and to be part of the bread and butter is necessary to boost market demand,” Peng said. Besides opportunities, she also sees industrial challenges in several years. In smart homes, multiple standards coexist. “The major industrial challenge at present is lack of standardization,” she said, adding that besides RF 433MHz and 868MHz, the company offers solutions supporting mainstream wireless technologies, such as Z-Wave, ZigBee and Wi-Fi. Peng also predicts a few mainstream and dominant standards will come out only when smart home products reaches the mass markets as did TVs, smartphones and notebook PCs in the past.

CLOUD PLATFORM AND BIG DATA CREATE SMARTER HOMES Internet of Things (IoT) creates a new industry and business models with enhanced production value for certain industries. Spurred by the growing trend of IoT, Longhorn offers iHORN cloud platform to cater to increasing IoT demands. The company has developed IoT

solutions, including IP cameras, sensors and cloud platform. As a major player in the device layer within the IoT ecosystem, Peng believes sensors compose one of the largest segments of the IoT industry. She viewed smart home as an important driver for the IoT business. For smart home companies, cloud platforms offer new business opportunities. Companies enhance their sales revenue with both hardware and software by offering total solutions. Peng pointed out that “smartphone and mature network have driven the smart home development in the past two years. Proliferating 3G, 4G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies force tighter connection among smart devices. Users have smarter ways to secure their lives and create a comfort living environment. In comparison to traditional alarm

systems, the smart home systems offer a flexible and free way for home security monitoring. Also, its nature of openness expands the industrial ecosystem at a rapid pace. The company rides the wave by offering smart home alarm and home automation systems as well as a cloud platform called iHORN. The company developed its iHORN cloud platform. The platform offers peace of mind via safety sensors and security cameras, and provides remote controls on lights and home appliances. For advanced features, the platform, connecting to temperature and motion sensors, supports voice control function for intelligent control. The system connects remotely to security service providers with cloud video recording services, push alarm notifications, and other home automation services.

DEFINING A REAL SMART HOME

Longhorn was approved by ISO9001:2000 quality management system, passed ISO14001,OHSAS18001(Health and Safety Management System), and ISO/TS16949 certification. Its are products also approved by CCC, CE, FCC, UL and EN.

Moreover, iHORN will offer GPS location services for emergency assistance, vehicle tracking and personal safety services like elderly and children care, and healthcare. In the long run, the platform can help the company to generate revenue stream by selling analyzed data like consumers’ consumption preferences, user habits, healthcare information and so on. As the security alarm industry, services can generate more revenue for industry players than hardware itself at the smart industry as well. In smart homes, hardware contributes to the largest portion of the industrial production value though.

A real smart home system can automatically manage smart home devices, and even make decisions for homeowners. Otherwise, they can only be "Home Control" devices.

Everyone has a different interpretation of what is “smart.” In Peng’s mind, a real smart home system can automatically manage smart home devices, and even make decisions for homeowners. Otherwise, they can only be “Home Control” devices. Peng believes a real smart home system should be endowed with intelligence, offering smart environment prediction algorithm. “A smart device could think, communicate with users, and take smart actions. The smart devices perform actions based on preset scenes or events,“ Peng explained. “For example, when the temperature is over 30 degrees Celsius, all the connected devices like air conditioners and fans will automatically turn on to cool down a room. When the air quality becomes worse or unhealthy for sensitive groups, the sensors at home will notify users and connect to the air purifier which will turn on to decontaminate air in a room at the same time,“ Peng said. ”A real smart home should bring users comforts and conveniences with intelligent designs. For example, if we place an order, the delivery will be sent within a few days. Through the online payment system, we don’t even need to take out cash.” In addition, it should be internally functional and externally attractive.“We are proud that our product like D1 is aesthetically-pleasing as well as easy-to-use,” said Peng.

CORNERSTONE OF SUCCESS In the last two decades, the company has proven to be a symbol of success amongst its peers through the everlasting pursuit of quality and DMS (Design, Manufacturing and Service) strategy. Longhorn invests around 10 to 15 percent of its annual turnover on R&D investment for ID, hardware and software design, testing and engineering services. At present, the company has more than 200 patents worldwide. Equipped with high-precision production equipments, the company has a strong in-house manufacturing capability, including mold development, mold injection, surface treatment, coating and assembly lines. Regarding services, Longhorn listens to its customers’ needs and feedbacks for offering efficient, value-added and trustworthy services. Peng believes leading smart home providers should have a good balance of product design, technological competitiveness, platform services and business models. Longhorn wants to be the largest and the most professional IoT sensor company in China through its unparalleled combination of hardware, software and cloud services. BORN TO EMPOWER Platform Benefits All Players in Smart Home Arena A platform enables interoperability of things. In this article, the mapping of platforms' functions and relationships with other players reveals the key role that platforms play in the evolution of smart home ecosystems. By Melody Lin

EXPLORATION

PART TO IMPROVE USER EXPERIENCE While more and more innovative devices make their appearances to the market, instead of making life easier, the barrier that blocks communication between different protocols inevitably complicates solution deployments and brings new problems. As interoperability becomes the main issue in smart home arena, a powerful platform would be the solution for this over fragmented market. "A platform can help accelerate consumer access of smart home product," says Nigel Chadwick, CEO of Stream Technologies. A platform that unifies several routes of signal transmission into single network access and control center with only one interface makes it easier for users to accept a smarter l i f e s u r ro u n d e d b y t h e s e interconnected devices.

TO ACCELERATE TRANSFORMATION OF HARDWARE SUPPLIERS I t i s g e t t i n g h a rd e r a n d harder to raise gross profit by just selling hardware. In order to extricate themselves from the price war, hardware manufacturers are trying to create more values for their products, and they have noticed or utilized the power of software. "Device makers have realized that they have to integrate their hardware with software," observed Flora Yang, General Manager of Raylios Technology. 18 mySMAhome.com May/June 2015

WHAT A PLATFORM CAN DO Connectivity is the pivotal part of smart home. An ecosystem comprising of devices and services, such as smart plugs, smart locks, lights, IP cameras, sensors and many cloud services, is built upon a platform. As a connectivity enabler, a platform not only provides communication between devices but also facilitates data mining and helps create profitable services.

Utilizing the licensed platform technologies, manufacturers need not go over the hardship of developing a new one, and TTM can be shortened.

For instance, many device makers are ambitious enough to make their products the control center of all the home devices, which means the functions of a "gateway" can be applied to almost anything, including an IP camera, a NAS or a set-up box. A platform that is built upon the "gateway device" would thus be helpful for these makers to realize their dreams. "We see very strong need for platform, from manufacturers who make smart home products," says Chadwick. "It could be the platform that pushes the consumer market and helps form the complete ecosystem of valuable services and applications for these partners. It also lets consumers

stay loyal to their brands as well." Utilizing the technologies licensed by platform developers, these manufacturers need not go over the hardship of developing a new one, and therefore the time to market (TTM) can be shortened. Their transformation from device makers to service providers can also be accelerated. They can make profit by offering cheaper hardware but with worthier services. As for chip makers, it would also be easier for them to introduce those SoCs with embedded platform modules to the market, because hardware makers or service providers can easily develop their own services by leveraging the available solutions.

Jim Hunter, Chief Scientist and Technology Evangelist at Greenwave Systems

TO BRING OUT VALUABLE SERVICES As a universal translator, a platform can enable communication between devices over various protocols. Based on the interoperability of things, new values may occur as a consequence. "When you understand what the things are saying, you can translate the noise into a cohesive information source," explains Jim Hunter, Chief Scientist and Technology Evangelist at Greenwave Systems. As the information database grows day by day, the interaction between devices may get smarter. Imaging that a light controller and a security motion sensor can subscribe each other’s conditions and interact accordingly: when the motion sensor detects presence of intruders, the light controller would know and turn on the light immediately; when the light is turned off, the motion sensor would also get the message that no one is at home and it is time to

activate the security system; or the two devices can cooperate to simulate the presence of the home owner based on preobserved user patterns. The previously described scenario reveals the true value of platform- the capability of tapping into Big Data economy, where messages gathered from multiple sources can be analyzed and contextual clues about how these devices are used can be disclosed. Have a better understanding of customer preference and habits, a device maker or a service provider is able to refine the product lines or services accordingly. Like what Zonoff does with their platform, “our cloud software collects analytics through consumer permission and delivers them to our channel partners. Our partners can use it to deliver recommendations via Zonoff’s platform on new or enhanced products,” says Kevin Garton, Chief Marketing Officer of Zonoff. As for other software developers, they can make profits by integrating their own modules with popular platforms and then develop their own niche services. "It is the application/ service that is

really profitable. We are actually aiming at the opportunities on the application layer of popular platforms.” says Sam Lee, Special Assistant to CEO of Taiwan Colour & Imaging Technology. In terms of end users, the data can be taken as a reference, allowing them to manage their homes better. The "Consumption" service provided by Sensing & Control's enControl platform shows how this reference helps create pragmatic applications. "This feature allows users to consult their monthly expenses in realtime and to see what they are predicted to spend for the period. They can adjust their consumption habits to avoid high bills and also lead a more sustainable life," explains Pedro Espinel, Director of Global Sales of Sensing & Control Systems. "This is the value of a platform," commented Hunter. "It leverages a variety of information sources and creates new contextual and relevant information, upon which services can be created in the form of savings, safety, security and convenience."

BASIC ELEMENTS OF A PLATFORM Interoperability of things is achieved via several layers of connections, and integration with third-party services and products is essential in the formation of a platform.

PART The networking of connectivity comprises of several layers. To integrate devices which adopt various communication protocols, a platform that is able to provide IoT connectivity is usually built on a gateway which connects to a hub/ router and Internet. Connections under specific protocols between end devices and mobile devices can also be built via embedded software modules. Some platform

developers have collaborated with SoC providers by embedding their own software on SoCs which would be plugged into devices and gateways. B i l l Ts a i , P r o d u c t Manager of ThroughTek, describes the advantages of a modular solution, "we integrate software and hardware by adding our solution onto the chips, and o u r p l a t f o r m c a n d i re c t l y communicate with devices that have our solution inside and

activate the backend cloud applications." The collaboration between iDevices and Broadcom provides another example of how modular solution facilitates connectivity with efficiency. "As for our Broadcom-based Bluetooth module (Broadcom do the chip, and we do the software stack), it enables Bluetooth Smart functionality t o p ro d u c t s a n d m a k e s i t easier for customers to achieve integration," says Christopher Allen, CEO of iDevices.

EXPLORATION

As for services of a cloud platform, they are often offered in a modular way as well. By providing these services in a modular way, a platform provider can thus meet the needs of different verticals. In the case of ThroughTek's Kalay platform illustrated by Tsai, "a client can decide what services he would like to host by putting the relevant modules on his own server. Then he can start his own business as a service provider." These cloud services may include device management, bandwidth management, data collection and analysis, storage, O TA u p g r a d e , M 2 M / P 2 P server, account management, authentication, billing system, media streaming, etc. Depending on the specialties of platforms and specific customer needs, advanced functions may be added, such as Video Surveillance as a Service (VSaaS), facial recognition or smart data streaming.

THIRD-PARTY COLLABORATION There is no such a company who can create a platform with services suitable for all verticals all by itself. According to CSide, the global platform provider for several telcos, the partnerships with hardware makers are essential and always welcomed. "CSide works with different hardware manufacturers to integrate a wide range of easy-to-install sensors and accessories. By regularly adding new sensors to the existing intelligent platform, CSide continues to enable the introduction of new features for customers," says Miguel Braga da Costa, Project Manager of CSide.

FLEXIBILITY AS A SERVICE

Several layers of connections are required to build a connected home.

Since the importance of collaboration is underlined, platform developers would provide third parties with tools which facilitate integrations.

Icontrol continues to enhance its smart home solutions by partnering with other hardware professionals through Icontrol’s OpenHome Certification program. “Our targeted partners are hardware makers who can provide innovative connected devices that can interoperate with others devices on Icontrol’s open platform, allowing consumers to develop a fully customizable smart home experience,” says Greg Roberts, VP of Marketing at Icontrol Networks. Daniel Schellhoss, Managing Director & Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing of ProSyst, also emphasizes Prosyst’s capability to form partnerships with main players in this industry. "ProSyst has formed alliances with some of the leading players in their respective fields in order to offer complete solutions for any Internet of Things project, including semiconductor manufacturers, gateway vendors, service providers, third party software companies, smart home solutions providers and prime integrators." Besides, Raylios has recognized the potentials in the "Maker" market and has taken initiatives

by partnering with open source communities. "We’ve ported our SDK to RaspBerry Pi I and II. Next step we expect to approach Arduino and Linkit Community," says Ray Yu, CTO of Raylios. Since the importance of collaboration is underlined, platform developers would provide third parties with tools which facilitate integrations, such as SDK and API. For instance, iDevices, as a part of Apple's Homekit ecosystem, welcomes partners by providing SDK and standard applications that help them create their own Homekit solutions; Prosyst also provides partners with the ProSyst mBS Smart Home SDK, which simplifies the integration process and allows partners to develop, customize and expand their solutions or applications. On top of that, the utilization of open source technologies is another trend worth to note. "Open platforms technologies, such as OIC and Allseen, can be very helpful in connecting devices in local network. We can leverage their specialty and focus on the development of our own cloud services," says Ray.

EXPLORATION

PART SCALABILITY AND STABILITY A service-oriented platform has to be built on a scalable and stable structure to adapt to the diverse situations in various projects. In some cases, certain service providers, such as telcos and MSOs, may serve hundreds of thousands of subscribers. The servers have to be horizontally and vertically scalable so that new services can be added on a platform without causing end users any inconvenience. The quality of service should remain the same, while the number of subscribers continues to grow as a service provider expands its businesses to new markets. In addition, once a server is breakdown, the loading should be transferred to another one and the user data should remain intact. "These features are crucial to service providers, and they rely on trutworthy platform d e v e l o p e r s t o o ff e r s u c h a future-proof structure," concluded Mina Wang, Director of Smart Network System Institute of III.

FUTURE TREND In a market where new products, applications, services and communication standards continue to emerge, a future-proof platform has to be qualified in several aspects.

FIERCE COMPETITION Many IT giants are all aiming at the market by creating their own platform standards which integrate a variety of network connections (wireless or wired), such as Allseen/AllJoyn, OIC/ I o T v i t y, A p p l e / H o m e K i t , Google/Nest, Thread, IEEE/ 1905.1a, etc. “Almost every quarter a new platform standard is announced by a big brand!” 24 mySMAhome.com May/June 2015

says Chih-Hsiang Ho, Section Manager of Smart Network System Institute of III. These big players are applying their platform standards to smart home and drawing hardware makers and software developers into their own ecosystems. However, the core competences and strategies of these big players differ.

With powerful influence over consumer electronic market, Apple develops its own Homekit game rule for third parties to abide by. Samsung also released SmartThings Open Cloud and the ARTIK platform, a family of multi-chip modules mainly for Samsung products. Google Nest’s Thread takes a more open stance and

supports IPv6-based protocol which facilitates big data transmission. IEEE 1905.1a is supported by an extensible mechanism so that it allows ITU-T G.hn or other standards to work with the existing home network technologies (e.g. WiFi, the most frequently applied and well-known wireless connection). However, it is hard to predict if these giants will successfully take over the market any time soon, according to observations from some platform developers. "In general, it is to be expected that both, Google Nest and Apple Home Kits, will have some significant market share. However, this depends not only on their long-term investment but also on whether service p ro v i d e r p o r t a l s w a n t t o integrate these offerings in their vendor portals," says Daniel Schellhoss, Managing Director & Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing of ProSyst. A s a s o f t w a re p ro v i d e r, Raylios expresses that openness is the decisive factor for Raylios to decide whether to apply for membership or not.

“There's little space for 3rdparty software to involve in Apple HomeKit’s closed system; Google Nest has shown their ambition to extend their control from air conditioner to other home devices, and we've been following their progress," says Ray Yu, CTO of Raylios. Ho even predicts that the “war” of platform standards will be a status quo in IoT world, and these leading players who excel in different verticals will hold their ground. “That is why our iFamily platform would rather focus more on ‘convergence’ itself than emphasize our siding with certain alliances.”

FLEXIBLE IN NATURE, NICHE SERVICES

Under such a fierce competition, platform providers still have their way of thriving. They may partner with big players by supplying niche services which are desirable in those ecosystems or in vertical markets. Or they may enhance services by integrating popular products into their platforms. And in some cases, customization are required. For instance, with expertises in video processing, steaming and IoT connectivity, ThroughTek partners with Allseen by offering its IOTC and video related solutions; In-Snergy’s iFamiliy, which specializes in energy management, has allowed Chunghwa Telecom to integrate its energy-saving solution into the telco’s platform. To improve user experience, Icontrol has integrated the Nest Learning Thermostat, Philips Hue family of connected lighting and the Logitech Harmony Living Home lineup of remotes into its own ecosystem. To Zonoff, whose software functions do not differ from market to market, it is still

necessary to do modifications for clients. Targeting at a wide range of customers, such as retail stores, service providers, insurance, home construction and energy companies, Zonoff would offer customization in language as well as in measurement systems for localization’s sake. For example, in a UK app, Zonoff would show home temperatures in Celsius. In terms of vertical markets, platform providers also have to delve into specific requirements for service providers. As a partner of several telecos and utility companies, Sensing & Control understands their needs well (especially in energy management) and offers its scalable white label service and a solution tailored to those demanding industries. Since the prevalence of mobile phones is the driving factor behind the bloom of smart home and IoT market, Stream has devised its IOT-X solution to address problems for mobile network operators. "We see MNO’s looking more for full stack solutions they are able to upsell to customers whom they already have a hook into,” says Allen Tait, CTO of Stream Technologies. All these cases indicate that the ability to probe into “needs” and to provide niche services, which can be connectivity, VSaaS, alarm system or energy management, is the key point that leads these platform providers to sustainable business models. Most important of all, these platform companies are trying to be as flexible as possible. They do not object siding with other ecosystems, but at the same time, they would love to keep their own niche market and enhance their platforms for hardware makers and service providers.

Telcois a New Game Changer

Fibaro:

Fibaro, a revolutionary system that allows users to automate all aspect of the home using simple, non-invasive products, is setting the trend on how every connected home device should be – small, compact systems that pack a punch.

“We strongly believe that simple products can still be very advanced,” said Krystian Bergmann, Fibaro Technical Expert, when talking to SMAhome at MWC 2015. Fibaro provides non-invasive installation process, eliminating the need to run meters of cables and wires. Comprised of modules and sensors, it can be installed in just about every electrical system.

Fibaro Using Z-Wave “We chose to adopt Z-Wave because it is currently the smallest chipset currently available on the market. What’s more, we have always wanted to create the smallest device in the world,” he said. “Z-Wave was always been about compatibility, standardization, and certification processes, so that is why we chose Z-Wave. Also, because we wanted to have integration with different third-party producer/devices.” According to Bergmann, although Fibaro looks forward to integrating other protocols in the near future, but since Z-Wave is currently the most popular standard amongst telcos and security companies in the US, it has no immediate plans to stray away from its current adoption.

Meeting All Requirements The home automation provider currently channels its sales across nearly 100 countries via a complicated network of distributors

The next two years will be very important because telcos are becoming really active in the home automation market. Krystian Bergmann, Fibaro Technical Expert

By Veronica Chen

Fibaro provides noninvasive installation process, eliminating the need to run meters of cables and wires.

and resellers. Based on a business-to-business model (B2B), most of its products are geared towards professional projects, such as electrical companies. “At the moment, our largest market share is in professional installers, but we are looking to expand our business through telcos on a business-to-consumer (B2C) model,” Bergmann said. “Our inventory currently holds 50-60 products all related to gateways and modules,” he said, adding that it aims to provide a complete solution to home automation. Also, Fibaro also has its eyes on unexplored markets in the Middle East and Africa, opportunities which Bergmann stresses that, “the 21st century will be ‘Africa Time.’”

Apple HomeKit Versus Google Nest “Officially, we are part of the Apple development program because we are undergoing several projects mostly related to software development including applications for the Apple platform. We are very excited that big software companies such as Apple and Google are devoted to home automation and we are looking forward to integrating our products with them,” Bergmann exclaimed. The factor that will help HomeKit quickly become a game changer in the home automation industry, giving mobile possibility from a platform point-of-view directly to the user, according to Bergmann.

Telcos Are Game Changers “The next two years will be very important because telcos are becoming really active in the home automation market. Telcos play an important role to pushing for mass-adoption of home automation.” While Fibaro’s biggest market currently lies in Europe, the company said it is targeting major US markets because they house big-brand telecommunications companies. “Big game changers will be in telcos because they already have existing mobile users who will help push home automation to the masses,” Bergmann concluded.

According to market research, Europe is the second largest smart home market — there are a considerable number of safety- and energy-conscious households. The U.K., Germany, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Italy, and Spain are considered major powerhouses for smart homes in Europe. A few Eastern European countries like Poland and Hungary also play important parts with their intelligent hardware and software solutions.

The European market, which is in the early stage of growth for the connected home market, has been growing steadily since the economic slowdown in 2009. According to MarketsandMarkets, the European smart home market, covering the entire ecosystem on the basis of products and services, is forecasted to reach US$15.3 billion by 2020 at a CAGR of 16.5 percent from 2015 to 2020. In the region, security concerns, energy consciousness, population aging, and government initiatives are major growth drivers. Regulatory initiatives and subsidies by the European Union (EU) is one of major growth enablers in the region. KRC Research’s report indicates that in the Netherlands, government initiatives are driving demand by providing financial support to the installation of smart home applications for assisted living homes as part of their social welfare program. The high adoption rate of broadband networking and low penetration rate of smart home devices make this region a gold mine for opportunists. Service providers like telcos and utility companies are strong promoters in Europe. However, consumers are still reluctant to accept new technology due to lack of standardization and communication standards, high initial cost, and privacy concerns.

POPULAR PRODUCT CATEGORIES In Europe, the major smart home product categories consist of security and access control, entertainment systems, lighting control, HVAC control, and healthcare systems, with security and smart energy systems the major categories at the moment. The MarketsandMarkets statistics shows that security systems are expected to have the highest adoption rate for mass markets. Surveys by Parks Associates show that safety and convenience are key factors for getting consumers to purchase smart home devices in Europe. Smart smoke detectors and door/ window sensors scored highest among individual devices. The residential security market in Europe is forecast to have stable growth. According to Technavio, the market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 15.5 percent over the period 2014 to 2019. With an increase in theft and burglary in residences and a rise in the aging population in Europe, the demand for physical security solutions such as intruder alarms, safety sensors, and electronic locks have surged. Such solutions are also used to monitor infants and pets at home. French telecom group Orange offers a home security kit to cater to market needs. Matthieu Douriez, Open Innovation Manager of the Product Marketing Department at Orange said, “I believe security device is the best way to build the smart home. Our mobile app is designed inhouse to support a wide range of smart home devices, including smoke detectors, motion detectors and sirens, among several others.” Monthly recurring fees are a major way to generate revenue streams for service providers. The Homelive system, Orange’s smart home name, is currently

offered on a monthly fee basis — customers will have to purchase the device with a monthly subscription fee: 79 for the package (home automation box + 3 sensors) and 9.99 for the service.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT IN HIGH DEMAND Smart energy, referring to energy management, is comprised of smart meters, climate control, and lighting sectors. Energy management implies cost savings and reduced carbon emissions. From startups to large-sized home automation companies, cost savings and individual room control are two major features seen in new products. According to Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU, the cost of electricity in Germany was 29.8 cents per kilowatt-hour (cents/kWh) in 2014. This price was the second highest in the region, behind Denmark, with the European average being 20.4 cents/kWh. KRC Research’s survey shows that out of 2,000 respondents, 37 percent of UK responders had a connected utility meter installed and 29 percent of Germany responders had smart lighting systems. Privacy Matters Through a consumer survey, IHS found privacy is the second biggest concern for consumers after cost. The industry needs to be very careful here in terms how it’s launching services, and how it’s using consumers’ data. The report indicates, “How will their data be used, and how will service providers understand what their habits are or know their locations, so these things are quite central to the smart home, having scenarios where home adapts in different ways depending on where the user is, which room, whether you’re on the way home, whether you’re on holiday, it’s one of those big key selling points for smart home. But at the same time it’s one of the areas where the consumers have found the highest level of concern when talking about privacy.”

revenue still comes from the professional installation market. Josep Cerón, CEO of Intesis Software cites the professional-installed, whole-home systems contribute much more to Europe’s entire smart home market than DIY systems. “Contrary to the US market, DIY smart home systems are rarely offered in Spain. We are more geared towards professionally-installed projects and solutions. We can say that the booming construction sector revived the home automation side,” he said However, DIY is a hot-sizzling market, as many retailers and service providers are active promoters. Online and physical retail stores are major sales channels for DIYers. DIY products feature low-cost home automation to lower initial spending for more affordable smart home systems. Also, ease of installation also helps to boost the market demand. Tobias Andersson, Technical Manager of Smart Home at Proove, said, “Our target now is to go to the DIY for the retail, and that’s the challenge, how to make the system so easy that everyone can use.“ He indicated that the key for going into the DIY market is to make our software and hardware very simple to use, and that is the difficult part. He added, “There are so many good systems, but many of them are actually not easy to use or set up. Major European channels, consisting of wholesalers, installers, retailers, Internet sellers, and DIY stores, enthusiastically promote the products on the shelf. The major retail channels, to name a few, are Media Markt, Amazon, B&Q, Makro, Maplin, Argos, Brico Dépôt, Electro Depot, Leroy Merlin, and so on.

Krystian Bergmann, Technical Expert at Fibar Group said, “Big game changers will be telcos because they already have existing mobile users who will help push home automation to the masses. At the moment, our largest market share is in professional installers, but we are looking to expand our business through telcos on a business-to-consumer (B2C) model.” Raivo Raestik, Co-founder of Yoga Systems said, “Telcos can generate new business opportunities. Today, they can include smart home services to their lineup to tell consumers that they have the innovation and technology to stay ahead of the game.” Sensing & Control offers versatile and flexible solutions, including home controllers and platforms for security, utility companies, and telcos. Pedro Espinel, Chief Commercial Officer of Sensing & Control said, “Telcos or utility companies want to offer different services to their customers.” He added, “I believe telcos and utility companies are potential enablers. However, the issue with telecommunications companies right now is that the market hasn’t grown any faster the past five years because the market is already saturated.” Startups like Wattio in Spain target the self-monitoring market with two sales channels: retailers such as Amazon, Dixon, Leroy Merlin,

We believe the customers prefer the smart home solution without monthly fees. Combining the hardware of hub, motion sensors, smartplugs, and so on with Wattio’s intelligent cloud software, our kit offers flexibility and intelligence to users,” commented Laura Mendia, Account Manager of Wattio. In the future, Wattio also eyes on the collaboration with insurance companies in Europe. Besides ISPs, Tony Risikko, Marketing Partner of Cozify, thinks energy companies will be market drivers in Finland. “After Apple, Google, Samsung joining the market, it may become a manufacturers’ and retailers’ games,” he explained. Off-the-shelf products are gaining popularity among service providers and retailers. M2M Solution offers turnkey white labeled or fully customized solutions for telcos to meet time-to-market demand. Mejdi Gharrad, Business Development Manager of M2M Solution said, “New entrants like service providers prefer need to reduce timeframe for the commercial launch.”

Technology and Design:

European Smart Home Considerations In Europe, there are over 50 countries and 20 official languages. In the world of the Internet of Things (IoT), it’s the same. In a smart home, a variety of connected products from diverse suppliers operate on different protocols. There are different routes to smart homes. What drive consumers to make their first purchase on smart home products are comfort and safe living as well as easy-to-use user experience. You can have your bathroom at 24 degrees Celsius. If you open the window and take a shower, the heater will turn off automatically. After you close the window, the heater will turn on again. Bernd Grohmann, CTO of eQ-3 explains its smart home design concept, “What we do is not just saving energy, we sell thermostats for increasing the comfort.”

POPULAR STANDARDS Developing interoperable systems and products is critical to early growth of the smart home market in Europe. Being open platform and supporting multiple standards are two major ways to tackle the problem of lack of standardization and interoperability. According to IHS, “A large part of the consumers don’t feel comfortable when installing smart home systems.” Usability is what suppliers are working on for 44 mySMAhome.com May/June 2015

their smart home products. Wireless networking standards and power-line technology are popular for smart homes because they are non-invasive and easy to install. A Parks Associates report indicates that an ideal product does its task with little to no maintenance and can provide more complex functions as needed. To that end, ZigBee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi and DECT ULE are key building blocks for today’s smart home systems along with wired alternatives like power line communication (PLC) and Ethernet IP networking. EN13757 compliant Wireless Meter-Bus (M-Bus) is a widely accepted standard for smart metering applied to electricity, gas, water, and heat resources in Europe. “We adopt Z-Wave because it is currently the smallest chipset available on the market. What’s more, we have always wanted to create the smallest device having integration with different third-party devices in the world,” said Krystian Bergmann, Technical Expert at Fibar Group. Matthieu Douriez, Open Innovation Manager of the Product Marketing Department at Orange said, “We adopt Z-Wave because it is a protocol that can address several devices. Our system also caters to Wi-Fi technology.” He

o ensure the air quality and safety at home, many sensors are required to detect the potential threats before any damage is done. However, with ECOA's FUEGO sensor, which can monitor up to nine kinds of environmental/ air status, users are able to gather the integrated information about his/her home environment with great efficiency. Multi-functional Compared with general sensors which often provide only one or two environmental indicators, the FUEGO sensor is cable of gathering multiple data at one time from nine kinds of sources: temperature, humidity, pressure, VOC, CO, CO2, LUX, Gas and PM2.5. It helps SI and users simplify the installation process and reduce costs. Besides, the FUEGO sensor is housed within an IP50 dustproof and comes with a LCD display which enables real-time monitoring. When the PIR inside of the gadget senses any human presence, the screen would light up and display the data instantly. As for installation, this sensor can be mounted on a wall of any room where air quality is a concern, via the RS485 MODBUS RTU protocol. It can be installed in the kitchen to detect

gas leakage during cooking cooking, or it can be settled in a living room to provide useful environmental info. Early Detection The wide range of the FUEGO sensor allows an early detection and alert once hazardous gas leakage happens, before gas density reaches the dangerous level, giving users more time to react and greatly reducing harms. As soon as the sensor detects potential threats, it would immediately warn users with sound alert. If the sensor is integrated on ECOA's smart control system, more interactions between the sensor and other devices would be available. For instance, as soon as the sensor sends alert, the alarm system would be activated and the gas shut-off valve would be turned off. About ECOA ECOA Technologies has specialized in building management system (BMS) technologies since its establishment in 1993 in Taiwan. In 2014, the company started to recognize the flourishing smart home market as its new playground. With its specialty in both automation and energy management, ECOA has applied its smart control system and products to improve the living environment in homes or residential communities. The ECOA hardware and software are developed and manufactured in house, which permits flexible customization for clients in professional installation market. In addition, to satisfy the growing needs for wireless connections in DIY market, ECOA is also focusing on developing new products that will support Wi-Fi and ZigBee and be available in the near future. www.ecoa.com.tw

added, “We aim to provide one app for all objects. What we would like to do is to integrate all these sensors, cameras, and functions within one app and help homeowners manage their home.” Intesis Software from Spain focuses on open technologies and protocols like KNX, LonWorks, Modbus, BACnet, and M-Bus. “KNX standard is used for controlling lights, heating, and as such,” said Josep Cerón, CEO of Intesis Software. The Polish company Zipato offers a home automation controller Zipabox that supports several important interfaces, such as ZigBee, Z-Wave, KNX, and EnOcean technologies for whole-home automation. The Cozify Hub supports ZigBee, Bluetooth 4.0, 433MHz, Wi-Fi, and Z-Wave to connect smart devices across different manufacturers and platforms. KNX, one of the primar y home automation standards in Europe, faces strong competition from new technologies developed for affordable smart home solutions. The green technology EnOcean is gaining attention, featuring battery-less solutions. It is one of a few wireless standards capable of energy harvesting. Z-Wave is popular among professional installers for its high interoperability among other thirdparty devices. ULE is inherited from DECT technology which is widely used in cordless phones and accepted by European consumers. The promising technology operates in the 1.9GHz frequency band, which is clean with much less interference than others like 2.4GHz. ZigBee is also an important wireless standard to watch, especially for the lighting segment.

OPENNESS SAVES TIME AND COST relayr, a Germany-based IoT Platform as a Service provider, indicated that open APIs will dominate the smart home evolution over the next five years. To boost the adoption rate, the company offers a service that is free for single and small batch users, then features low-cost monthly fees for larger businesses that connect thousands devices. This pricing 46 mySMAhome.com May/June 2015

structure reduces the costs of up-front investment in server infrastructure. The company released WunderBar, an Internet-of-Things starter kit with WiFi and Bluetooth sensors that comes in the form of a chocolate bar with built-in light, humidity and temperature sensors to enable companies and software developers to quickly develop prototype products and own solutions. Jackson Bond, Co-Founder and Head of Product at relayr said, “Our platform enables businesses, entrepreneurs and developers to develop their own smart solutions, allowing people to create their own connected things. We offer a cloud, open source SDK and sensor starter kit, so that businesses can rapidly create the IoT solutions they need to bring their bottom line down and accelerate their companies into the Internet of Things in days not weeks through our Innovation Acceleration program." Intesis Software offers Wi-Fi adapters communicating with every indoor air conditioner or heat pump regardless of brand or make, offering an open API for thirdparty companies wishing to integrate their AC-integrated systems. “As a software and hardware solution provider, we hope to integrate with all cloud systems and whatever companies interested in home automation systems who do not have their own solutions for controlling air conditioning. They can use our device to interact with other systems,” said Josep Cerón, CEO of Intesis Software .

EASY INSTALLATION Consumers might need new things to add after purchasing a new system. The life cycle of heating systems is 15 years. However, consumer electronics will have new features and capabilities every two to three years. Power lines are a great way to get infrastructure and add-ons done easily. Broadband and IP networks are second most mature infrastructure in the home. digitalSTROM offers a real plug-and-play solution via wired power line. “You never have the situation that all the devices have the same age, meaning they are not replaced frequently. The heating is a good example. Moreover, the devices in a home come from different manufacturers. That’s why we would never have a single standard for communication. However, there should be somebody taking responsibility for the interaction of the devices and the main infrastructure. When we look at the smart home for the mass market when talking to system setup, we need open interface and the ability to handle different technologies. digitalSTROM uses power line as an infrastructure — which every user has plugs, switches, lights connected there. That’s the only way you can make it really plug-and-play for the customers,” said Martin Vesper, CEO of

digitalSTROM. Vesper added, “When you talk about smart home, you don’t talk about three devices, it’s about 200 devices. The main driver for people to buy things online is convenience; it happens in smart home as well. We can’t be an expert for everything. If you have 200 smart devices at home, you would like to have it easy unless you have only three or four devices at home.” He added, “We use power-line technology because we don’t have to configure communication, as soon as you plug it in, it works. In order to have the high reliability and ease of use, everything should be connected via wires, unless it is a mobile device. For small devices like push buttons, lights and shades, we choose powerline; as for the IP-based devices, we recommend to connect them via Ethernet of POF." Furthermore, Vesper thinks voice control is an ideal solution for complicated commands.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Besides ease of use and installation, user experience is highly emphasized for smart home users. European consumers seem to be more conscious about external design that doesn’t interrupt their current lifestyles. Smart home devices need to fit home decoration. Lars Felber, PR Director of Elgato, a Germany-based company, said, “The Germans boast minimalist, clean, and bright design principles. All we want is that it needs to look good enough to be placed in a visible space, and not draw too much attention.” Swipe from Fibar Group, a Poland-based Z-Wave home automation solution provider, represents slim and hidden design, put behind a wall

or under a table. With the gesture control unit, users can control shutters and lights by swiping their hands in different directions. The product is scheduled to release in H2 2015. HomeDefender is an Italian brand of DIY home alarm systems, operating in Asia and distributed in Europe. Alberto Antinucci, Owner of HomeDefender shared his observation about user experiences. “Everyone has different living environments and backgrounds, but the same need. I mean user interface. For example, they all need to drink water though they use different kinds of glasses to hold it. Of course, the outlook should be nice enough to fit for the home decoration.” The European market is promising with growing business opportunities. The smart home suppliers in the region believe the market is growing with the aid of multiple market drivers. However, lack of interoperability is a major barrier to mass adoption. Since there are multiple standards applied in different applications, it’s not easy to choose side. Those who want to enter this sizzling market need to take care of functionality, usability, reliability, as well as unquestionable eye-pleasing design.

International Sourcing Buyers Respond at SMAhome International Conference & Exhibition 2015

The SMAhome editorial team talked to international sourcing buyers at SMAhome International Conference & Exhibition 2015, April 28 to 30, 2015, Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center to find out what they see and are searching for to keep up with smart home development. BY VERONICA CHEN

ORIGINAL MANUFACTURERS WITH HIGH-TECH CAPABILITIES

The venue featured an array of original makers that churn out state-of-the-art devices and high-value-added solutions. Most buyers reflected that is what stood out at SMAhome2015 compared to other exhibitions, where there are a mixture of traders and makers. Avi Rosenthal, VP of Nortek Security & Control Solutions, a first-time visitor, said, “Many good Asian manufacturers gathered here. I think there will be high potential of cooperation in the future!” “In Hong Kong trade shows, many exhibitors are trading companies, so they also cannot do customization. At the show here, you can meet with original manufacturers directly,” commented Jonathan Okina, CEO of Sentry US at ATS Group. 52 mySMAhome.com May/June 2015

“We base our buying decisions on technology — some Chinese companies only provide RF433/868 MHz, but it is too low-end for us. We think product quality is good here and our purpose is to buy Z-Wave products from SMAhome Expo to sell in Japan,” Tobias Andersson, Technical Manager of Smart Home at Proove. Based on buyers’ comments, there are several key differences between Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturers. The first one is that Taiwanese manufacturers have higher mastery in system products than Chinese manufacturers. Also, Taiwanese products are more stable, of higher quality, and more customized. Finally, Taiwanese manufacturers deploy Z-Wave and ZigBee more than Chinese manufacturers. “I found Taiwan’s makers having better deployment of the international transmission protocols such as Z-Wave or ZigBee. When it comes to the systemized products, Taiwan’s offering commonly has better stability and integrated possibility,” observed C.K. Sze, Z-Wave Evangelist at Z-Wave Alliance. “Our show highlights premier Asian makers for buyers’ better sourcing efficiency. They are able to navigate hassle-free around the showground to find good suppliers,” said Parson Lee, MD of Messe Frankfurt New Era Business Media, the show organizer.

THE SCALE OF TAIWAN’S SMART HOME INDUSTRY

Buyers that are used to purchasing in China found many alternative choices at SMAhome2015. They reflected that some of the exhibitors, especially those from Taiwan, are total strangers to them. “But they are not new companies. We just never saw them in other shows. Their offerings are interesting,” cited one Spanish wholesaler

at the show. In line with Taiwan’s superior IT framework, networks and IC (integrated circuit) industries, exhibitors, buyers, and visitors can meet with top-tier technology service providers from Taiwan, such as Climax, D-Link, AlphaNetworks, Unitech, and StarVedia to develop smart home partnerships. Maqsood D Shaikh, Director of Innovative Ideals & Services (India), a distributor from India, came to the fair particularly for smart home products. He stated: “The show is informative and helpful for seeing new suppliers and vendors with the latest technologies. I have requested most of the participating suppliers to provide samples for testing in the Indian market. We are likely to cooperate in the future. I would love to visit the show again to fetch new technologies and vendors next year.” One of the guest speakers at SMAhome International Conference 2015, Tobin Richardson, President and CEO of ZigBee Alliance commented: “We are really impressed with the attendees of the conference, particularly at our session, questions asked and also the conversation we had indicate the people here have a good understanding of what is relevant for consumers, as well as what is important in global standards and certification programs. I am looking forward to building on good relationships that started here.” Ranging from key components, devices, and integrated kits, around 150 manufacturers gathered at the show. For those looking for home cameras, the show is a “buyer’s wonderland.” More than 50 percent of exhibitors

SMART HOME SUPPLY CHAIN, LIVE! 150 related exhibitors, 26,229 visitors including 2,527 international buyers resulted in a tremendous success of SMAhome International Conference & Exhibition 2015, April 28-30, 2015 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center. With 4500-sqm display and the four on-site activities – “SMAhome 100 Express Center”, “Buyers Business Matching”, “SMAhome International Conference 2015”, and “International Buyers Gala”, the show has presented a platform for international buyers to realize and source among the smart home supply chain in a vivid way.

showcased network cameras ranging from economical models to all-in-one cameras that combine sensors such as sound detectors, temperature sensors, humidity sensors, ambient light detectors, air quality sensors, vibration/shock sensors, and so forth. One element that buyers particularly looked forward to was the gateway or hub. At the show, exhibitors such as D-Link, Climax, Dexatek, Philio, Yisen, Tranwo, and so on displayed a smart home hub, also known as the “brain” in an automated home setup. On the sensor side, exhibitors displayed multifunctional sensors with built-in wireless connectivity. Makers also emphasized user experience — users can easily find sensors that are cheap and easy to set up, measure multiple elements, and interact with a variety of devices through wireless communication protocols; and they last for years without a battery change. Another show highlight was doorrelated solutions, including smart locks, intercoms, peephole systems, and gate control units. Smart door locks showcased at the show were embedded with Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi modules. “By using PKinno’s Bluetooth to Wi-Fi gateway plugged into the wall, the user can add Wi-Fi functionality while conserving battery power for the smart door lock,” J Huang, Director of the Product Planning Division at PKinno.

SMART HOME IS TOP CHOICE FOR SECURITY CHANNELS TO ENTER IOT ARENA

Seeing the fierce competition in the professional security arena, an array of international security distributors and importers are seeking new market territories to keep themselves competitive. The smart home can be a fitting leap, as

FEATURE security is the key among the five smart home sectors and there is common ground between professional residential security and smart home security. According to the show organizer, security dealers are well-positioned in the smart home. The smart home becomes even more valuable when it’s integrated into an interactive security system. Take the smart thermostat for example, the home can send temperature alerts, save energy automatically based on security system arming, and shut off the HVAC in case of fire. These direct, easy to understand benefits are driving momentum for the smart home. “I join SMAhome2015 with three colleagues. We mainly focus on completing different product line. We are optimistic of smart home market and discuss with many suppliers about cooperative opportunities in the future,” said Arnon Kulawongvanich, GM of Bangkok OA. The company is one of the top security distributors in Thailand. Another top Thai distributor shared a similar view. “In addition to governmental and business use, home security is the growing market in Thailand now. I see the potential opportunities of the smart home market, therefore, I particularly look for IoT related suppliers this time!” said Kittichai Samittiwuttikul, MD of SMC Group.

wireless battery-powered camera at the SMAhome show. Another combination is traditional products designed for new applications. “There are always many new applications. To the simple ones, controllers like buttons or RFID that you can add in; button that you can use to different scenes. But I still believe the biggest challenge is the imagination what you can do. That’s what the devices today you can do with so much. But what you need, what you want to do, and how to do, figuring them out is a big challenge for many suppliers. Of course there are many interesting items, I’ve seen a few here in this exhibition,” commented Andersson.

SMAhome100 Express Center attracted over 150 buyers raising 240 product inquires in the three show days.

THE COMBO OF TRADITION AND INNOVATION IS MOST WANTED

Innovative products are always eyecatching, but buyers look for solutions combined with tradition and innovation, as the smart home is still new to most markets. “To be realistic in business, I have to consider the balance between what really sells and being future-proof. In most projects, traditional technology such as RF433 is still common. But international protocols should be concerned for future demand,” said a French distributor at the show. Popular products include the RF433 plus Z-Wave gateway, 4G home camera, 54 mySMAhome.com May/June 2015

PRODUCTS WITH ATTRACTIVE EXTERIOR DESIGN

“Size and (exterior) design are very important in smart home, so that the product can fit into user’s home very nicely. Design is a big issue that takes home décor into consideration. You would not want to have a bulky professional security camera inside your home,” said Andersson. As many sourcing buyers aim on the retailing sales channels of Apple stores, the industrial aesthetics design of the product is a key issue. “We like the product which can be associated with Apple products. It is not only for the US market. In any markets, Appleassociated products work,” cited Okina. Alberto Antinucci, Owner of HomeDefender, an Italian DIY home alarm brand, further stressed the importance of aesthetics in the European markets. According to him, small booths with sophisticated decor and beautifully designed products are the key to success at a show.

HOME KITS: One rising trend in the smart home is the emergence of home kits for the DIY market. While many kits are hubbased systems that comprise a hub and several connected objects that can be controlled by the hub, systems that do not have a dedicated hub are also available. In these systems, gateways may be embedded in devices such as a home camera. For example, GKB Security’s home automation solution platform, Aetherlink, is built around an IP camera with an embedded Z-Wave gateway that allows the camera to connect to and control Z-Wave sensors. The company is launching a kit that includes the IP camera and a 4--in1 sensor this year.

66 mySMAhome.com May/June 2015

Kits in the smart home are often designed for specific applications, and they provide consumers a quick way to get everything they need all at once for their desired applications and kickstart their smart homes. Consumers do not have to worry about interoperability issues as items in these kits are almost guaranteed to work with one another. Furthermore, as most kits are designed to have a consistent look, consumers also do not have to worry about items looking like they do not fit together in the home. By being purpose-built, these kits may also provide consumers an easier entry into the smart home, especially those who are not sure where to start and what to choose.

EASY INSTALLATION AND SETUP, THE MOST ADVERTISED FEATURE Easy to install and setup is perhaps one of the most advertised features of any kit on the market. Going wireless simplifies the installation a great deal as user can place the items anywhere they want without being restricted by the location of outlets. However, while the connected objects can be mostly wireless, many hubs still plug into the wall and connect to the internet via an Ethernet cable for system stability. Some hubs have backup batteries and GSM cards so they can continue to operate during loss of power and internet.

AFFORDABILITY AND DESIGN Affordability is another important consideration for DIY kits. To encourage adoption, many companies may advertise no monthly fees, or provide flexible plans that will not tie customers down to annual contracts. SimpliSafe even offers a 60-day money back guarantee — customers can receive a full refund as well as free return shipping if they are not completely satisfied with the alarm system packages within 60 days of purchase. To add to the appeal, kits have to be aesthetically pleasing and

A QUICK WAY TO KICKSTART THE SMART HOME be able to blend in nicely with the home decor without looking intrusive. Having an eye-catching design also helps any kit stand out from the rest.

COMMON APPLICATIONS: HOME SECURITY AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT Common applications for kits include home security and energy management applications. There are also kits designed for a combination of these applications. For example, Iris Smart Kit, which includes an Iris hub, a keypad, a smart thermostat, a range extender, two door/window/cabinet sensors, a smart plug and a motion sensor, can fulfill users' needs for home security, energy management all at once.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOME SECURITY KITS One type of home security kits is an alarm system that includes at least one hub and various combinations of door/window sensors, PIR sensors, keypads, sirens, remotes and panic buttons. For instance, Myfox Security System offers a simple solution that includes a door and window sensor, a siren, a hands-free key fob for automatic user recognition, and a hub called Link. Another example is Skylink’s DIY wireless security system SC-100, which includes one control panel, two door/window sensors, one motion sensor, and one keychain transmitter. The system may further incorporate home safety-related products such as smoke or gas detectors and water detectors. The Ultimate Package by SimpliSafe has 17 pieces including burglary, fire, CO, freeze and flood sensors. Another type of home security kits is home camera-based. For example, Arlo Security System is a hub-and-camera

Kits in the smart home are often designed for specific applications, and they provide consumers a quick way to get everything they need all at once for their desired applications and kickstart their smart homes.

system that includes a base station and at least one indoor/outdoor HD camera. Up to four cameras may be included in the kit. However, for some alarm system type home security kits, cameras may also be added. For energy management, smart plugs (some with dimming), smart switches and smart light bulbs are the most common items found in a kit. With smart plugs or switches, user can remotely control lights and appliances at home or set up schedules or event-triggered motions. Some smart plugs have built-in smart meters to monitor energy consumption to help user save energy. In this feature, we have compiled 11 home kits designed for home security and energy management applications.

Panasonic’s strategy is in the IoT, and our strategy is to offer comlete one-stop shop. Stephen Yeo, Marketing Director of Panasonic System Communications Europe

By Veronica Chen

Panasonic Nubo Shakes up Market with 4G Connectivity

Nubo is rated IP-66 so users can leave it outside in the sun, rain or dust, and it has both built-in microphone and speaker for two-way communication, including motion detection that can communicate via Bluetooth to your door locks for example.

Designed primarily to monitor, record and send video footage to the cloud or home hub using wireless connectivity, network security cameras play a significant role in a smart home setup. Function-wise, this device remains true to its singleness of purpose – surveillance. Today, there is no shortage in the availability of home camera choices. But putting quality and brand aside, the only difference lies in their aesthetic design. However, Panasonic is about to change the phase of the game by making a run for their money. “The main evolution lies in its unique feature – built-in 4G and 3G, which is the first-of-its-kind on the market,” said Stephen Yeo, marketing director of Panasonic System Communications Europe. Contrary to other home cameras that require fixed Wi-Fi connection, Nubo is designed for people on the go. It is a standalone camera supporting full 4G LTE connectivity and also comes with an external battery pack so it will keep recording when unplugged from a power source. Meanwhile, the device also supports Wi-Fi/2G/3G

and even GPRS. Nubo is rated IP-66 so users can leave it outside in the sun, rain or dust, and it has both built-in microphone and speaker for two-way communication, including motion detection that can communicate via Bluetooth to your door locks for example. “It has sensors and motion detectors so it will trigger alarms, and it can send these alarms and video footage through 4G to the cloud where you can pick it up on your mobile phone,” Yeo said. With built-in SIM card for 4G Machine-to-Machine (M2M) network, Nubo is made available through data plans. Users can select monthly plans, which start from 7 to 10 Euros, and with access up to 250 alarms. Panasonic Nubo will be made available to the European marketplace this coming November – starting off in the UK and the Netherlands. According to Yeo, it will be sold through online retailers such as Amazon, and through mobile phone retailers. However, the company is also looking forward to pushing Nubo globally. “We have high hopes for Nubo. Our competitors in the US are shipping a million units of security cameras a year… so if we get this right it could be very significant. This can become mass market type of product,” he explained. “Panasonic’s strategy is in the IoT, where we are the world’s biggest maker of ‘Things.’ Our strategy is to offer complete one-stop shop where you have the network and cloud service for business integration services,” Yeo added. “Our goal is to continue buying system integration companies in Europe over the next 18 months. So what we will be able to offer is the network, the device, the cloud service (software), the system integration, and engineering capability. We believe we are the first in the field to able to do this.”

The killer app is you because the desires and needs are based on the customer. Jim Hunter, Chief Scientist and Technology Evangelist at Greenwave Systems

By Weili Lin

Greenwave: The Killer App is “You” There are reasons for different standards and protocols in the IoT space. Greenwave Systems, a leading software and service company, offers solutions in a flexible, affordable and modular way to make them useful and unified. While the smart home arena continues to expand at an unprecedented pace, the anticipation on mass market adoption cannot be achieved unless players on the field resolve three key issues – reliability, affordability and usability. “It only took us 18 months from initial concept to product delivery as opposed to our predecessors who took 3 years to market their software,” he said, adding that the company also did it 30 percent cheaper,” said Jim Hunter, Chief Scientist and Technology Evangelist at Greenwave Systems. Greenwave has a build system to support 26 different hardware platforms, allowing developers to build on the technology that solves three key issues. In the IoT space where a hodgepodge of standards and platforms are becoming ever-more confusing, Greenwave claims that it is able to flip that complexity to provide a more comprehensible solution for system integrators, including telcos and service providers. “We have got a challenge in this IoT space. The fact that a device is on the Internet doesn’t mean

The fact that a device is one the Internet doesn't mean it's operable with other devices. So when I think of the IoT, I think of interoperable things and not necessarily the Interne-of-Things.

Everybody believes that there is going to be a single solution, but it's not going to happen.

it’s operable with other devices. So when I think of the IoT, I think of interoperable things and not necessarily the Internet-of-Things. And that’s where the real value proposition comes,” he stressed. “We are not a typical automation system provider because we move modules with properties and parameters. Our system communicates with those by getting into devices and services through an extraction layer. That means we don’t care what technology you bring to the home or protocols,” he said.

The Killer App is “You” The killer app of the IoT is entertainment, and that begins by the consumer, Hunter said, adding vividly about how many people enjoy being entertained and that there are a plethora of devices coming online to the IP network. He stated that to date, over 75 percent of Internet traffic is derived from video streaming where people are constantly being entertained.” “The other killer app is you because the desires and needs are based on the customer,” he exclaimed. “We don’t necessarily know what the future holds for technology, but we do know that we need to be flexible as we approach it. Our software is certainly flexible,” said Hunter. When asked about whether there will be a single solution in the near future, the avid technologist and inventor said it is not going to happen anytime soon. “Everybody believes that there is going to be a single solution, but it’s not going to happen. The reason it won’t is because we as mankind are the best example of that. Thousands and thousands of years we have existed and we have not settled on a single language. With company concerns and the money involved, that is simply not going to happen.”

everything. Devices at smart home need to be interoperable. Sherman Chen, VP of Technology at Broadcom's Broadband and Connectivity Group (BCG)

By Weili Lin

Broadcom Leverages Networking Expertise to Unify Smart Homes With strong presence in connectivity technology, Broadcom Corporation uses home gateways and set-top boxes to connect things at home. Broadcom is concentrating on video security and home automation solutions by working with video service providers like Comcast in regard to its connected home approaches. For smart homes, what matters the most is interoperability among devices. Broadcom creates value from interoperable and secure solutions.

Successful Solution Supports Multi-Standards Broadcom has strong background in access network technology from backbone to DSL, cable, and fiber optics network. To enter this new market, Broadcom provides connected home experience through current home gateways and set-top boxes in place for many years. “The first thing to enter the smart home industry is to connect everything. Broadcom’s core competence is all about connectivity. Devices at smart home need to be interoperable. However, there are too many standards,” said Sherman Chen, Vice President of Technology at Broadcom's Broadband and Connectivity Group (BCG). To deal with the issue, Broadcom offers complete interfaces applied at home, such

As long as you have a TV and set-top box, you can have your own smart home system. As soon as you step into your home, you can make sure everything is fine in the home. That’s what Broadcom’s smart home solutions are presented.

as HomePlug, MOCA, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and ZigBee. “In smart homes, you can see a variety of wired and wireless connected smart devices based on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and ZigBee standards. We offer solutions fully compliant with the standards,” explained Chen. The existing smart home standards opt for different dedicated applications. Chen indicated that every standard has its disadvantages and limitations. For instance, Wi-Fi has limited capability in traveling through walls and requires high power consumption. ZigBee features low power consumption, but low data transfer rate. The wired connected devices like HomePlug smart plug can be uses as the repeater for wireless connected devices. Therefore, a successful smart home solution needs to support multiple standards. Its current offerings consist of mass-market ready turnkey hardware designs and complete end-toend solutions to support multiple networking technologies. Broadcom’s WICED turnkey modules support Wi-Fi, BLE and NFC. To reduce total cost of ownership and achieve fast introduction to the masses, modular design and standardization are fundamental.

More Than Just Video and Broadband

Broadcom works to provide consumers convenient experiences by integrating Bluetooth Beacon technology to its set-top boxes, and hardware manufacturers connectable and manageable IoT devices. Its solution discovers and tracks location of all devices beaconing in the home, and transmits data from STB clients to identify the device using a friendly name. The company reuses existing gateways and set-top boxes to deliver additional services. The connected devices can identify users’ location and then trigger actions based on users’ setting and behaviors. Also, users can get the status of their homes from the set-top boxes at home. For example, when they come home, they can see “Welcome home” and the family members’ photos on their phones. For those homes with security cameras and set-top boxes, home users can see real-time videos from security cameras at once. Previously they see the videos on the PCs; now they can see them on TV. With proximity detection, users with their smartphone can control home connected devices like smart lock, door sensor, and thermostat without manual or voice control. When the user arrives home, the door will automatically open, and then the thermostat will set personalized temperature defined by the individual user.

Industrial Challenges In the smart home front, those who can define a better business model and successfully enlarge the business scale to integrate and connect different component, will lead the market upgrade to the next level. In Chen’s observation, it’s getting more difficult for companies to 76 mySMAhome.com May/June 2015

develop their business in a traditional way in the IoT industry. Chen said, “To unify the diversified IoT industry, it requires an open platform that is cost effective and easy to develop.” Broadcom’s WICED platform is designed to support wireless connected devices, supporting 1,500 IoT devices at present. More, its solutions support IEEE 1905 nVoy to discover all devices on home network.

Reliable, Profitable Broadcom believes home security is the largest application in North America, followed by home automation and energy saving. He indicated that the service providers like AT&T and Comcast will be market drivers. Some companies like Apple and Samsung can also drive the market because they have lots of connected devices. Chen believes the smart home market is not driven by a single application or product line. “If you want to have home surveillance for the security, you need an operator to offer the service. That’s basic,” said he. The US video service companies like Comcast can provide home

security and automation services through their own network to provide more services as a customer value added (CVA) approach. “The market should focus on product reliability and service liability,” added he. As a major supplier of smart home gateways, he believes complete interfaces, QoS, strong processing power and network management capability are important for home gateway designs regarding reliable network transmission and interoperability. He indicated that high-speed transmission can deliver real-time data transmission of multiple devices, like real-time video transmission from surveillance cameras.
