COVER STORY James Wei, President and CEO at Orbweb, is a software and telecom industry veteran with more than 20 years of experience in sales, marketing and operation management. Before founding Orbweb, he was Opera's Asia-Pacific President, General Manager of Openwave and Teleca. Seeing the emerging trend of ‘all things connected’ and the increasing demand of the software and services, Wei founded Orbweb Inc. to ride the trend. By Weili Lin James Wei, CEO Orbweb Inc

GoToMyThings Features • An IoT Service Portal for device access and management • An IFTTT-like service for automated cross-device interactivity • Main applications in the platform: SmartCam, SmartSwitch, SmartLighting, SmartDoorbell, SmartGateway, SmartSensors, SmartThermostat, and SmartVehicles. • Device integration support for x86, ARM, MIPS and others • Client REST API support for Android, iOS and web browsers • GoToMyThings also provides an ecommerce sales channel in the U.S.

10 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

New IoT Opportunities Established in 2014 and headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Orbweb Inc. has positioned itself as a "Cloud Enablement" company with a branch office in Taipei, Taiwan. The company started off as a software and platform provider of remote desktop, personal cloud, camera monitoring and media streaming services. The company launched Orbweb.me and GoToMyThings (GTMT) for PC users and IoT device makers respectively. What makes the company special is its new business model—making its cloud platform as an ecommerce platform. The revolutionary business model is poised to reshape distribution channels in the smart home market.

TRANSFORMING PC TO PERSONAL CLOUD The first product from the company is Orbweb.me, which transforms the personal computer into a personal cloud. Users can stream videos and music, view photos, remotely access webcams, preview and edit documents, and transfer files between PCs and mobile devices. By utilizing the memory, hard drives and peripherals, it transforms the PC into a secure personal cloud. Through the remote desktop login, users can control their PCs when on the go. Nowadays, the company partners with consumer electronics, PC, and network storage companies worldwide like ASRock, GSmart, Intel, Synnex and Thecus. “We focus on playability. With our expertise

THE IDEA OF GOTOMYTHINGS IS TO GIVE USERS THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE DEVICES FROM VARIOUS PARTNERS THAT ARE CERTIFIED AND INTEROPERABLE, EVEN WHEN THEY PURCHASE THE PRODUCTS FROM DIFFERENT SHOPS OR AT SEPARATE TIMES. in adaptive transcoding, our solution can meet QoS requirements between PC and mobile devices for video transcoding based on bandwidth availability,” said Wei. Furthermore, Orbweb.me can transform the PC webcam into a home IP camera with ease. “By means of our smart algorithm, the PC webcam can detect motion and send notifications to users through frame-by-frame sensitivity adjustment without the need of in-camera motion sensors,” Wei explained. Wei mentioned that a major challenge for the mass adoption of IoTs is the complicated setup and configuration of the systems. With multiple platforms and various protocols, IoT system configuration and setup is often too arduous a task for most consumers. Therefore, the company designs its platform with an easy and quick setup. Users simply uses their email to register, and confirm their password.

SMART, NOT JUST CONNECTED The company launched an IFTTT-like IoT platform called GoToMyThings (GTMT), designed as a service portal for users to manage, monitor and March/April 2016 mySMAhome.com 11

COVER STORY

sync their connected devices. The platform now supports smart home devices such as IP cameras, switches, lighting, smart doorbells, gateways, sensors, thermostats, vehicles, and more which are made by various partners of different brands. The GoToMyThings platform is designed to enable cross-device communication where all of the connected devices are interoperable. “Users can set schedules and scenes on their connected devices to increase the convenience from the smart home application. When homeowners arrive home, the smart light bulb can turn on and the connected thermostat adjusts to their preferred temperature.” Wei gave this as one user scenario. “The idea of GoToMyThings is to give users the freedom to choose devices from various partners that are certified and interoperable, even when they purchase the products from different shops or at separate times. Users can purchase additional devices online while enjoying a smart lifestyle through futureproofed cloud services.” GoToMyThings also provides geo-fencing and special features like time-lapse recording that is unique in the market. With the help of cloud recording, connected devices can support face detection and video clip notification. The highly modular and scalable cloud back-end effectively handles user requests. It offers services that scales capacity and instances during traffic spikes or lulls so as to maintain performance and application availability while minimizing operation cost. The solution enables agility for its operator partners.

A WEB OF CHALLENGES “We serve end-users to manufacturers and that means understanding what their needs are. For our partners, time to market is critical. GoToMyThings hardware partners are experts at what they do, but IoT is not just hardware. Different partners have different needs from embedded functionality to cloud services, from M2M NAT traversal solutions to adaptive media transcoding, some just need help with mobile device applications.”, said Wei. What do manufacturers want? They want 12 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

to be able to offer great products to a global market. The GTMT team works with each partner to understand where they are, where they want to go and with the GTMT platform, partners are able to accelerate product development and delivery schedules. Equally important are all the various services that work in concert with the hardware to form wonderfully orchestrated user experiences. And at the end of the day it is the end-users who decides the winners. So what are end-users looking for in a product? As Wei mentioned, they don’t want something that makes them feel they need one of those ‘Dummies’ books; they don’t want to commit to buying something today and find it's obsolete tomorrow or it doesn’t work with another device or service. Users want something that is simple to use, feature rich and future-proof, and they want to share their great user experience with friends and family, which is exactly the same things GTMT partners want. In addition to smart home examples, like smart cam and smart switches, an interesting example that Wei described is a school district with parents who want to be able to 'peek' into their child's classroom to see that everything is alright. The GTMT team worked with the school district, the school’s IT vendor, and parents. After understanding their existing applications, constraints and objectives, they lent their expertise in the areas of security and cloud services, and introduced IPCam partners to deploy a solution that fits nicely to satisfy the school’s goal which is – 'Happy Parents'.

Overview of GTMT Partner Services

market but cannot find the right door into it. By leveraging Orbweb’s foothold in the U.S., Wei takes this one step further by organizing an online retail platform for GTMT hardware partners, in effect having one more sales channel for their products. Orbweb helps the device makers, especially Asian ones who are highly interested in the U.S. market to promote and sell their products efficiently. The special online ecommerce site will launch in Q2 of this year. To run the online ecommerce site, Orbweb manages all marketing activities and ad campaigns for GTMT hardware partners as well as providing shipping and handling services. And the hardware partners are able to offer their products under their own brand name. “We don’t charge a shipping fee to the sellers, but will take a small sales commission for all merchandise sold. Additionally, we can offer market insight to help makers improve product designs and updates.” Wei stated. The platform will provide compliance testing for hardware partners to ensure the product quality and compatibility with GTMT platform.

ECOMMERCE PLATFORM AS A SERVICE While working with an array of hardware makers, Wei found that many of GTMT’s hardware partners are interested in the U.S.

ADDITIONALLY, WE CAN OFFER MARKET INSIGHT TO HELP MAKERS IMPROVE PRODUCT DESIGNS AND UPDATES.

EMERGING PRODUCT TRENDS IN GERMANY

14 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

By Editorial Department

The first quarter of 2016 is bustling with a handful of smart home related tradeshows in Europe. Light + Building, the world's largest light and building automation trade fair reveals the market trends in Germany—energy efficiency, ease of use and personalized home automation experience. The solutions are designed to enhance home security, comfort and energy management.

Germany is the largest national economy and smart home market in Europe. In the region, the home automation market is composed of professional installation and retrofit markets. KNX and Internet Protocol (IP) are dominant network technologies for professional installed systems in Germany. With increasing demands for add-on smart home devices and renovation in the existing homes, wireless communication becomes a popular adoption. Besides easy installation, wireless solutions are considered to be more affordable and accessible to the mass market.

MAJOR COMMUNICATION PROTOCOLS Popular wireless communication standards include EnOcean, ULE, ZigBee, Z-Wave and proprietary wireless protocol from eQ-3. EnOcean is a popular wireless communication protocol in Europe with more than 150 manufacturing partners. EnOcean is famous for battery-less and energy harvesting technology that generates power via movement, sunlight, heat and others from the environment. ZigBee is also a major wireless protocol, especially for smart lighting applications. ABB, a global leader in power and automation, launched ABB-free@home wireless system under the BuschJaeger brand. The system is designed for installers and the retrofit market to install home automation systems without re-wiring the home. Adapting

a 2.4 GHz frequency communications protocol and mesh network technology, the system is used for lighting, heating, blind control and door communication. free@home wireless can be used as a stand-alone solution or as an extension to the wired version of free@home. Furthermore, the system supports voice control to provide more intuitive control. When it comes to connectivity, Bosch believes open standards and open platforms make the technology as user-friendly as possible. Also, Bosch smarthome system is designed to be modular and expandable to make it easy to connect and compatible with smart devices from other manufacturers. KNX is one of the dominant communication protocols for building and home automation, adopted by 400 manufacturers and 50,000 system integrators, including leading European companies like ABB, Gira, Legrand, Bosch, Philips, Jung and SchneiderElectric. Through support of Apple HomeKit, users now can control KNX IoT enabled home automation devices via their smart watches. nomos Box is a gateway that lets users to control their connected home devices via an Apple Watch. The gateway supports different protocols with its nOS (nomos operating system). nOS connects them with IoT apps such as Samsung's SmartThings or any other Apple HomeKit compatible app. March/April 2016 mySMAhome.com 15

Intesis introduced new gateways— Universal AC to KNX and AC to WiFi Gateways for controlling air conditioners. These solutions feature quick setup and easy configuration. The new universal air conditioner gateway IS-IR-KNX-1 is compatible with more than 40 different AC conditioner brands. The device is installed next to the air conditioner and sends commands using infrared codes. With the built-in infrared receiver, the gateway can capture the changes made by the user through the AC IR remote controller. The configuration can be downloaded via USB or via KNX TP1. Moreover, the new IS-IR-KNX-1 is powered from the KNX bus directly. Another new WiFi gateway launched by Intesis is designed for home automation manufacturers and integrators, using a simple local protocol over IP. The device can automatically discover the installed devices; its Wi-Fi configuration allows dynamic or static IPs. The company announced a new app for Apple Watch and VoiceOver support for the IntesisHome iOS APP. VoiceOver can help blind or visual impaired people to control the air conditioner with ease.

INTEGRATED SYSTEMS ON OFFER The Robert Bosch GmbH launched Bosch Smart Home GmbH which focuses on smart home solutions, providing comfort, safety and convenience to the end users. The company introduced Bosch Smart Home System that comprises a smart home controller, smart radiatorthermostat, door and window contact, and supports Philips Hue lights for the retrofit market. When the door and window opens or closes, the radiatorthermostat would automatically control the heaters and adjust the indoor temperature for efficient energy management. 16 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

Homematic IP from eQ-3 is a comprehensive smart home system that includes nine connected home devices, supporting remote control via the smartphone app. The solution can control home security and energy management devices. The system supports bidirectional communication and operates at RF868MHz frequency. The proprietary system is free from interference caused by WLAN, Bluetooth and other wireless standards. To address privacy concern, the company’s server is located in Germany having strict compliance with German and European privacy policies. ComfortClick bOS platform provides special features like logical operations, presence simulator, data logging and text-to-speech in additional to remote controls. When the user leaves home, bOS will turn off the lights, lower the shades, reduce heating, turn off electrical sockets and activate presence simulation. The user can also monitor the energy consumption of electricity, water and gas for better energy management. Stiebel Eltron showcased DHE Connect, supporting WLAN connectivity to the Internet, can be remotely controlled and monitored via a smartphone or tablet. The appliance supports temperature presetting, graphic information displays of consumption and costs, and personalized setting. The award-winning Enno Panno S is an intelligent control panel that supports KNX bus technology, EnOcean wireless technology and RS485 communication protocols. The device supports voice control of lighting, shutters, air conditioning, heating system, multimedia devices. It adjusts the indoor climate when detecting outdoor temperature change, providing comfortable living environment. With builtin infrared and motion sensors, Panno S lights up when the user is near in the dark, and automatically switches to the energy-saving mode when detecting a person.

Zipatile is an all-in-one gateway that supports gesture control. The multifunctional device can be used as a home security system, automation application, elderly care system, thermostat, intercom, room controller, and video surveillance system. The device is compatible with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Ethernet, Bluetooth 4.0 and Z-Wave protocols, and supports Philips Hue, Sonos and Nest. Philips Hue white ambiance starter kit comes with two Philips Hue white ambiance bulbs (800 lumens at 4000k), a Philips Hue dimmer switch and a bridge that supports Apple HomeKit. It enables users to control devices via the Philips Hue app, Siri voice control and Apple Watch. To provide better user experience and interoperability, Philips Hue now has more than 600 third party apps that can interact with it. The smart lighting solution can work with Nest Learning thermostat, Nest Cam, Nest Protect, Amazon Alexa and Bosch Smart Home System. With Philips Hue white ambiance, users can create their own light recipes to change the ambience and light effect in different home areas. Philips Hue white ambiance supports ‘Routines’ feature. In the ‘Wake up’ mode, Philips Hue will imitate the rise of the sun by gently increasing light intensity to naturally wake up a user in the morning. When ‘Go to sleep’ routine activates, the light bulb gradually dims until it is off to let users to prepare their bodies for falling asleep.

SAFETY AND SECURITY TECHNOLOGY Video monitoring, fire and burglar alarms, and access control systems are popular items for home security and safety. Supporting remote control via a smartphone and smart watch is a popular trend. For example, Legrand’s Hausstati on Classe 300 X13E has a 7-inch touchscreen display and supports remote control via a smartphone. The users who have Siedle intercom system can have

remote control of their door phones and better access control via their smart watches. Schüco DCS (Door Control System) combines door communication and access control functions. Besides, when the motion is detected, the video camera activates the system as soon as a person approaches the entrance. Supporting IP network, voice and video calls are transferred through open SIP standard; the system can connect to IP videophones, smartphones, tablets and softphones. If the DCS is stolen, the IP secure connector will automatically break the network connection so that the lock cannot be manipulated and the internal network cannot be accessed either. Siedle provides a new video station that enables lower price at over 20 percent than that of the previous hands-free device. Catering to the IoT trend, the company provides smarter door communication with a new app for Access and Smart Gateway. Users can receive a door call or unlock the door via a smartphone and Apple Watch. Apple Watch will sound a signal when somebody rings the door, and displays a live image to show who is standing in front of the door. Integrated with external IP cameras, users can select cameras directly with the App 2.0 to see what is happening around the house. In Germany, energy efficiency has become the norm when designing products. In addition, there are more integrated systems in the home automation marketplace. We see more Internet connected and interoperable system as well as the combined functionality of home security and energy management. For smart home, human-centric designs are gaining traction. We can expect more and more intelligent gadgets that support intuitive operation and smart algorithm to improve home comfort and safety.

Smart Home Safety

Home safety relates to the protection of the occupants’ well-being and their properties. Fire prevention has always been an important part of home safety, with fire sensors, commonly smoke sensors, installed at home to detect signs of fire as the first line of defense. Besides fire detection, detection for floods/water leaks and carbon monoxide has become more popular. With technologies that make sensors smart, homeowners can now stay connected with their smart sensors at home even when they are away, and be alerted when something goes wrong. Two product categories for smart home safety – smart smoke & CO detectors and smart flood/water leak sensors – are introduced in this feature.

For home safety, smoke detectors are commonly installed in homes for fire detection, as smoke can be an indication of a fire breaking out. Early detection of fire can help keep occupants safe and prevent property damage. Besides fire detection, there has been growing awareness of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in homes, which can be a result of incomplete combustion of carbon-based fuels coupled with poor ventilation. More homes are installing CO detectors either because it is required by the local authorities or they recognize CO poisoning as a credible threat. For example, the Ontario government in Canada brought CO alarm requirements into force in October 2014.

7 Smart Smoke and CO Detectors for Intelligent Home Safety Monitoring Like other “things” in the home going through the transformation to become smart, smoke and CO detectors are catching up as well. Companies a re re i n v e n t i n g t h e re l a t i o n s h i p and experience people have with their detectors by adding wireless communication to the detectors and bundling them with a mobile app or a smart home system to make them not only connected but also smart. Smart detectors can be single-purpose or multi-purpose, and a popular category for multi-purpose smart detectors for home is smoke & CO detector. “While multi-purpose detectors provide a higher level of safety and can be installed in a broader range of environments, they cost more and may not be necessary for some environments,” says Jenny Liu, vice president of Shenzhen Heiman Technology.

MOBILE ALERTS, VOICE ALARMS These smart detectors are no longer dull-looking pieces of technology that many people cannot comprehend – they now can send mobile alerts to users when something goes wrong, or even speak to users using human voice, making interaction more natural than ever. Companies like Nest, First Alert and Halo Smart Labs have all launched products that support voice alarms that tell the user what type of danger it is (e.g. CO or smoke) and where the danger is. Halo by Halo Labs, a smoke/CO alarm, features

22 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

62 voiced alerts that can be mixed and matched. Halo+, an upgrade to Halo, can even deliver weather and disaster alerts. However, other companies still prefer traditional non-voice alarms over voice alarms. “We think people would react better to alarms that make a high decibel, piercing sound compared with voice alarms,” comments Liu.

REST ASSURED, IT IS WORKING! The greatest benefit of using smart detectors is perhaps that users can rest assured knowing their detectors are working properly. According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three out of five home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties with no or no working smoke alarms, and the risk of dying in reported home structure fires is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms. It is therefore crucial for homeowners to make sure their detectors are in perfect working order so they can be alerted when needed. Rather than staying passive and responding only when there is an event like their traditional counterparts, smart detectors can take a pro-active role in ensuring their normal operation through advanced software. For example, smart detectors can now do self-testing. By taking over the maintenance job previously done by humans, smart detectors can eliminate human errors or negligence in keeping the devices functional. Products like Nest Protect and Halo/Halo+ can do automatic self-

testing so users do not have to worry about testing the detectors. According to Nest, “Nest Protect tests itself to make sure that its batteries, sensors, speaker, horn, and Wi-Fi connection are working.” Smart detectors can be hard-wired or battery-operated. Some battery-operated smart detectors now come with low-battery warning via mobile alerts rather than just beeps, which helps maintain the power required for operation.

MAKING DIY INSTALLATION POSSIBLE Some smart detectors feature DIY installation. However, there are still challenges associated with DIY installation – users may not know where to install or may experience issues during

the setup. These detectors have to be installed at appropriate locations to be effective. Companies can help make their products truly DIY by providing step-by-step guidance through the mobile app or clearly written user manuals. Moreover, companies can also provide online/physical support. “Without professional installers, it is sometimes not easy for users to install the smoke detector properly. We offer videos and user manuals that offer clear instructions to guide our DIY customers,” says Johnson Chang, executive vice president at Nietzsche Enterprise. “With clear illustrations, our app guides users through each step of product installation and setup, dumbing down the process and making it easy for our users,” says Liu.

First Alert

Nest Protect

Onelink Wi-Fi Smoke + Carbon Monoxide Alarm

First released in October 2013, Nest Protect detects both smoke and CO in a single device. Since its second generation, Nest Protect has used a Split-Spectrum Sensor. With an extra blue LED, the Split-Spectrum Sensor is supposed to enhance the traditional photoelectric sensor, allowing the device to see large and small particles. Nest Protect has many innovative features worth noting. To name a few: it can tell steam apart from smoke with its humidity sensor and custom algorithms; it has a pathlight that lights up when someone walks underneath it; it allows users to hush alarms (if smoke levels are not too high) right from their smartphones; when one speaks, all the other Nest Protects also speak, so users can be notified even in a different room. As part of the Nest family, Nest Protect works with Nest Thermostat and Nest Cam, enabling scenarios like when Nest Protect is triggered, Nest Cam will automatically record a clip.

Halo Labs

Like Nest Protect, this alarm also detects smoke and CO in a single device, and all the alarms will sound together when there is an event. The alarm uses photoelectric detection. For the 10-year battery model, the battery will last for the life of the device, and users won’t have to replace the battery. The alarm is compatible with Apple HomeKit and allows users to test or silence false alarms from their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Halo+ Using both ionization and photoelectric technologies, Halo+ can detect fast moving fires and slow burning fires. What makes Halo+ really special is its weather alerts. According to Halo, “Halo+ comes with a radio that is tuned to the emergency weather channel, a channel that broadcasts weather threats across the US. Customers can even program Halo+ to monitor the threats they are specifically concerned about, whether that’s tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, or even amber alerts (child abductions).” Halo+ will be manufactured in the U.S.

8 Smart Flood/Water Leak Sensors for Bringing NewGeneration Home Safety When there is an event, flood/water leak sensors will alert the homeowner typically via audible alarms and sometimes visual alerts as well. But what about when no one is at home? Smart flood/water leak detector is here to the rescue. With wireless communication and mobile apps, users are kept in the know even when they are away from home.

MUST-HAVE FEATURES

By Cindy Lin

Like fire, water leaks or floods can cause homeowners extensive property damage if left unattended. They can be a result of having leaky faucets or faulty pipes at home or be due to weather conditions, for example. Flood/ water leak sensors can be placed around home where water problems may occur to alert the homeowner when there is a problem. Early detection can help stop the problem and prevent further damage.

26 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

When it comes to smart flood/water leak sensors, leakSMART Spokesperson Ann Poston considers the following features essential: sensors must have reliable contacts that quickly detect water leaks and then alert the system; be an appropriate size to fit in small areas while still being visible; provide audible and/or visual alarms/alerts; have a longlasting battery life; and can to be named/ distinguished via an app. Avi Rosenthal, vice president of Security & Control Products for Nortek Security & Control, expresses that besides the ability to detect water, durability and reliability are also important for these sensors. “Water/flood sensors must be able to detect water. As a homeowner, you’re counting on these devices to alert and notify you when water has been detected in your home so it’s important they perform as intended. Beyond that, it’s important for these devices to be durable and reliable.”

TYPES OF FLOOD/WATER LEAK SENSORS In general, two types of smart flood/ water leak sensors can be found – the “bug” type, and the type that has a wired probe. Users can choose the type they

want based on where they intend to install the device. “The wired probe model is designed to be used in places where floods are expected and the level of water can reach more than a few centimeters,” says Oren Zandberg, program & project manager at The Crow Group. “In places like bathroom closet or faucet where there is not much space and floods rarely happen, the bug type is the best option due to small dimensions and easy installation.”

MORE SENSORS, MORE APPLICATIONS Some smart flood/water leak sensors, like Fibaro Flood Sensor and WallyHome, incorporate additional environmental or motion sensors for expanded functionality and more versatile applications. Fibaro Flood Sensor has embedded temperature and tilt sensors, and WallyHome monitors temperature, humidity and movement in one. “Many sensors are starting to feature a variety of other applications or uses, so that homeowners won’t need many different sensors, including temperature, humidity and motion,” says Poston.

PART OF A SMART HOME SYSTEM, OR A DEDICATED SOLUTION FOR PREVENTING WATER DAMAGE Smart flood/water leak sensors may be part of a larger smart home system, which can be developed by the same company or a third party. To take several examples, Samsung SmartThings Water Leak Sensor is part of the SmartThings ecosystem based around the Samsung SmartThings Hub; Fibaro Flood Sensor is part of the Fibaro System which includes a controller and various other sensors; and Z-Wave based

Smart Flood Detector and Smart Flow Detector, just like other products under the GoControl brand, work with popular Z-Wave enabled home control hubs such as those from Samsung SmartThings, Wink, Nexia, Vera and others. Alternatively, smart flood/water leak sensors may be part of a dedicated solution that targets the particular application of preventing water damage at home. leakSMART is one example. It is a home water protection solution that includes hub, sensor and special valve connected to home’s main water supply. While the solution can be standalone, it can also be integrated with third-party smart home platforms including Wink, Iris by Lowe’s and Samsung SmartThings according to Poston.

Nortek Security & Control GoControl Smart Flow Detector WL00Z-1 Wireless: Z-Wave GoControl Smart Flow Detector takes a very different approach to help prevent leaks. It attaches to any copper water pipe at home to sense if there’s water flowing through the pipe without cutting the pipe. “The detector can be used to monitor the entire house and detects leaks on a more general level. It detects if water is

leakSMART

USE OF ZIGBEE AND Z-WAVE PROTOCOLS ARE POPULAR ZigBee and Z-Wave are two popular wireless protocols for smart flood/water leak sensors. Companies like Samsung SmartThings and leakSMART adopt ZigBee for their flood/water leak sensors, while others like Nortek Security & Control and Fibar Group adopt Z-Wave. However, other communication technologies may also be used. SNUPI Technologies developed a unique communication technology called Sensor Network Utilizing Powerline Infrastructure (SNUPI), which is used in the company’s sensor solution called WallyHome. SNUPI takes advantage of the copper wiring in walls to create a sensor network and is ultra-low power.

flowing and then, depending on how long that activity has been going on, alerts the homeowner,” says Rosenthal. The device is interoperable with other Z-Wave solutions. It can work with Z-Wave enabled shut-off valves to shut off the flow of water if it detects water had been flowing for longer than the time allotment defined by the user.

Fibar Group

Wireless: ZigBee As mentioned previously, leakSMART comes with hub, sensor and valve (electronic motorized brass water ball valve). What is unique about leakSMART is that the valve, which connects to the home’s main water supply, will shut down the water supply automatically when there is a leak. The sensor can send audible alerts even if it’s not connected to the hub. “leakSMART is working with a variety of smart home platforms to ensure that regardless of the chosen smart home platform by consumers, leakSMART can integrate with the system appropriately,” says Poston. She adds that leakSMART’s second-generation line of products will be launched in fall 2016.

Fibaro Flood Sensor Wireless: Z-Wave Fibaro flood sensor has quite e a few eye-catching features – tamper prevention, gold telescopic scopic probes and ability to float in water. With a tilt sensor that detects tilt and movement over 15 degrees and a tamper button, the device alerts the user if it has been moved or tampered with. Three 24-karat gold plated probes are found at the bottom of the device, and they have been designed to compensate for uneven surfaces. Besides, gold plating provides corrosion resistance and more precise detection. In addition, the sensor provides temperature readings with its embedded temperature to Fibaro’s controller, Home Center 2, to help users manage floor heating.

How can a software company like Zonoff to become a leading consumer IoT platform provider in the U.S. within just five years? Kevin Garton, Chief Marketing Officer at Zonoff shared his observation on the smart home market and illustrated the company’s business strategies.

Zonoff is a leading consumer IoT platform provider in the United States. Since its establishment five years ago, the company’s customer base has spanned different sectors, including service provider, retail, insurance, consumer electronics and home construction segments. Zonoff ’s software platform powers Staples Connect, one of leading home automation solutions in the United States, which is available in over 550 Staples retail stores.

the best and broadest ecosystem of devices. I think that’s the real differentiator of us versus other competitors. What makes us different is the way we built a software suite and the architecture of our platform. We’ve built a system to have true interoperability to enable connected devices using different protocols to communicate with one another. We continue to support for different protocols, such as Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, and proprietary wireless and mesh protocols from Lutron and we can easily add new protocols as they come to market.

Please elaborate your business strategy.

What are your competitive edges? We are a little bit different than most of our competitors. We can really take you from the beginning of the journey all the way to the customer delivery. We provide a set of software services, and work with lots of leading hardware companies by offering reference designs to help them build smart home hubs and allin-one devices. Zonoff B2B2C business models ensures we are familiar with consumers’ needs and interests. We can take the expertise and apply the learning from various verticals in the different individual markets. We don't want to just sell you the software platform; we want to make sure that both software and hardware work in harmony, improving time to market and helping our customers build better solutions. We achieve the results by providing turnkey end-to-end software solutions and services. We offer hardware reference designs, a robust software platform, a turn-key UX and UI program and we offer a subscription services platform that enables our clients to monetize their solution. We can make sure products from different categories work well, including smart locks, thermostats, etc. Furthermore, we help our clients to build the hub or gateway of their choice and provide the integrated software platform that runs the consumer IoT business. For example, insurance companies don’t want to be in the hardware business. They want to deliver value to the consumer by protecting their homes and properties. Connected home solutions can help insurers prevent the frequency and severity of claims. We work with hardware companies to provide insurance players with turn-key starter kits under insurance companies’ names. We can bridge them via our platform to create more business opportunities. the smart home from a notification engine to an end-to-end home-service solution, creating new and recurring revenue opportunities for Zonoff clients and partners. We integrate our platform with HomeAdvisor’s network of prescreened and customer-rated home service professionals, giving consumers the ability to not only be aware something is wrong but also to instantly connect with home professionals like plumbers and electricians through their smart home platforms. Our platform can provide notification when there is an issue in the home but homeowners are away at the time of a home maintenance issue or unable to take speedy actions. For instance, if you have a home automation system which detects leaks, you can dispatch the plumbers or electricians to your house through the app to fix the leak that may cause the damage.

What are main market drivers? Every big technology company wants to take part in the consumer IoT marketplace. We see lots of opportunities and innovation with service providers like cable, ISP, telco, and home security companies as well as retailers. Service providers like cable company, ISP, telco, security companies generate sales revenue by installing and fixing products for their customers. They have established subscribers and are selling services on a regular basis. Those models are most effective for mass marketplace adoption.

Do you see any killer applications? From our perspective, there is no ‘killer’ application—everything is so specific and personalized, creating lots of capabilities is crucial. I think there will be lots of important applications like personal safety, having a grandparent or elderly 30 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

parent being contacted with them by using the technology. User can monitor family member from the remote location, and send messages to take care of their health. It could reduce cost and complexity to improve the lives of consumers. The healthcare market has been getting a lot of attention lately; while we think the application is still more than the early stage currently; there are lots of new ideas like improving healthcare system better and new innovations of elderly care. Healthcare will be a big focus for Zonoff over the next few years. The industry is booming with lots of new innovations and technologies. Voice control is going to be prominent. In 2016, we will integrate voice control technology into our platform. We think Amazon Alexa is one of the great technologies, which has been licensed to different devices.

What are your observations on smart home in the coming years? Concerning protocols, right now there seem to be too many competing standards in the marketplace. We believe that they should be more than one standard to ensure competition and choice. From my point of view, however, we have too many standards or companies trying to introduce new standards so they can control a portion of the market. In terms of adoption and growth, the smart home market consists of three main segments in the US, premium/whole home, mass-market professionally installed and DIY. The premium market will continue to grow but is limited by the price of entry, the mass-market professionally installed systems, like ADT Pulse, will lead the market in growth and DIY will follow. Many consumers still need someone to help them install products for them. Professional installers can deliver better consumer experience than the DIY segment as some DIY products still require lots of effort and knowledge to be installed. The market is in the early stage, and expected to grow dramatically over the next few years. We think the industry will take off significantly over the next twelve to eighteen months. We believe that smart home technology will continue to improve and it will become much simpler to use multiple products and services together in that time.

FEATURE

Smart Lock: First Trigger of the Smart Home BY WILLIAM PAO

Smart locks, which interact with the smartphone and automatically trigger smart home products such as lights and thermostats once the user gets in, are now seen more and more at the front door. “As adoption increases and technology develops further, smart locks will offer the homeowner more convenience and connectivity while maintaining security and control,” said Donald Beene, Product Manager for Smart Home at Allegion. Henning Overgaard, CEO of PolyControl which makes smart locks called Danalocks, said home smart locks’ growth potential will be significant. “We have been in the business for almost 15 years doing smart locks. For the last year, things 32 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

have moved, and we think that maybe in the next two years things will really take off,” he said.

TECHNOLOGY Needless to say, using the smartphone to open doors brings the homeowner more convenience, which is a main selling point for smart locks. With these locks, the homeowner doesn’t need to bring keys or worry about losing them again. Rather, the door can be opened with the device that’s most personal to everyone, the smart device. When the smartphone is used to open the smart lock, two primary technologies are used to enable the handshake between the two: near-field communication (NFC) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), the latter of which is now gaining prominence due to its pervasiveness and ability to allow a more secure communication. “BLE chips are cheap and increasingly found in every modern smartphone, tablet, and laptop, and this opens up our smart device interoperability over BLE,” said Rocco Vitali, Product Manager of Electronic Security Products at ISEO Serrature. “Security of communication over the BLE channel is achieved with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), using session keys exchanged with Diffie-Hellmann Elliptic Curves

and generated using the NIST-compliant random number generators.” “We both encrypt and authenticate all messages sent with the latest standards to ensure no messages can be ‘replayed,’” said Cameron Robertson, Co-Founder and CEO of Lockitron. NFC solutions, meanwhile, also exist. “Our locking system can be controlled using Android-based smartphones featuring NFC. The smartphone forwards all the events from the door to the online administration to keep the entire system up to date,” said Hanspeter Seiss, Product Manager at EVVA Sicherheitstechnologie. “All transferred data is secured with

cutting-edge encryption standards.”

OTHER BENEFITS There are other advantages to smart locks as well. One of them is better security over traditional metal keys and locks. “Metal keys are so easy to bump, crack, snap, kick, or jemmy-open, and they don’t really provide peace of mind in securing your home,” said Steve Dunn, CEO of LEAPIN Digital Keys. “Isn’t it ironic that people’s most treasured possession, their family, and often their second most treasured possession, their home, is protected with a US$20 to $30 piece of flimsy metal that anyone can get through by simply watching a two-minute YouTube video about lock bumping and purchasing or making a bump key for $10?” According to Dunn, a smart lock’s true value comes when it is coupled with stainless steel security screens on windows, doors, and door frames. “Statistics show that most break-ins occur through smashed windows, or from kicking down back doors with wooden frames,” he said. “Installing smart locks with steel screens, doors, and steel frames creates an impenetrable fortress and gives ultimate peace of mind that your

FEATURE family is safe.”

MORE CONTROL More importantly, smart locks offer the administrator greater management control over who can come at what time. Whether it’s a babysitter who comes over once a week for one hour, or a friend who is coming over the weekend, the homeowner can grant or deny access to others on specific dates or time. Once someone has entered, the homeowner can be notified of the entry. “Bolt can be shared with family and guests on a permanent or temporary basis. Invitations can be sent via SMS or email. In addition we offer a full-featured openweb API so that other apps or devices can also control Lockitron,” Robertson said. “As the next step in our development roadmap, it is possible to send an invite directly to a user. The user arriving at the front door will type the invite and will open the door with a BLE smartphone,” said Vitali. “Our online administration allows you to grant access authorizations to unlock our locking components and many more features,” said Seiss. “All you need is a computer or notebook with an installed browser, an Internet connection, and sufficient KeyCredits to register and send a key to the user. Also with one click the authorization can be canceled. Preprogrammed temporary access from five minutes to several days can be programmed in advance and sent to the customer.” Meanwhile, the lock can also generate detailed reports or audits upon the request of the user, who can then get a clearer picture of who has come and left at what time. Smart locks also allow the user to open a door remotely using 34 mySMAhome.com me.com March/April rilill 20 2 2016 016 01 6

automation system. That's beginning to work now, and everyone sees this as a complete solution. their mobile device. “This one is handy if the lock is linked to an IP camera so you can see who is at the door first — for example if it’s the postman, you can open the door for him/her and they can place your package safely inside the door, and you can watch him leave and ensure your door is closed and locked again,” Dunn said.

INTEGRATION WITH SMART HOME SYSTEMS Another draw of the smart lock is its ability to integrate with various home automation devices, which have become more pervasive in the era of smart home. Enabled with the Zigbee or Z-Wave technology, the smart lock serves as the “first trigger” that turns on lights or AC system once someone enters the house. “We have all the integration options in our new application. We have complete integration to Logitech Harmony and Nest where if you come home, the Danalock will trigger your Nest thermostat and update home away status,” said Overgaard. “The Danalock can trigger every scenario in your smart home system. When you come home it turns off the burglar alarm and switch on the light. When you leave the house it turns on the burglar alarm and switch off the light. It’s a real trigger for the home automation system. That’s beginning to work now, and everybody sees this as a complete solution.” Yale’s Linus locks also work within the Nest ecosystem. “This will interact with the Nest thermostat, Nest Protect, and Nest Cam. So when you come in your thermostat will become a little smarter, knowing if I’m in the home or away from the home via my entry through the door. Other things can happen. If there is a CO2 or smoke warning it can tell me even before I walk into the house,” said Mark Fish, Director of Sales and Business Development at Yale Locks and Hardware. “At initial launch, the Schlage Sense smart deadbolt works with Apple HomeKit,” said Beene. “This means that it can be used with a variety of other HomeKitenabled accessories and apps to make your home smarter.”

ADDING SMARTNESS TO THE HOME Smart locks nowadays can lock and unlock via the homeowner’s smart device. Moreover, they can connect with various home automation devices, providing security as well as convenience for users as they leave or arrive at home. With smart locks setting the trend in the residential sector, it can be expected that pretty soon they will be found at every home entrance, rendering mechanical locks and keys a thing of the past.

2. Gartner: Five of top 10 IoT technologies for 2017 and 2018 are smart home relevant Gartner announced top 10 Internet of Things Technologies (2017-2018) in a recent report, including IoT Security, IoT Analytics, IoT Device (Thing) Management, Low-Power, Short-Range IoT Networks, Low-Power, Wide-Area Networks, IoT Processors, IoT Operating Systems, Event Stream Processing, IoT Platforms, and IoT Standards and Ecosystems. Among the predictions, there are five categories particularly relevant to the smart home space:

IOT SECURITY The IoT introduces a wide range of new security risks and

challenges to the IoT devices themselves, their platforms and operating systems, their communications, and even the systems to which they're connected. Security technologies will be required to protect IoT devices and platforms

from both information attacks and physical tampering, to encrypt their communications, and to address new challenges such as impersonating "things" or denial-of-sleep attacks that drain batteries. IoT security will be complicated by the fact that many "things" use simple processors and operating systems that may not support sophisticated security approaches.

HEMS providers. Another factor expected to highly influence the global growth of ZigBee during the forecast period is its advanced features and excellent compatibility, which have attracted most of the Fortune 500 companies to support and join the ZigBee alliance. North America and Asia-Pacific are two major markets to look out for - while North America took the largest share of the global HEMS market in 2015, the HEMS market in Asia-Pacific expects the highest growth rate.

Largest Market Share (2015): North America

Highest Growth Rate Expected: Asia-Pacific

3. TechNavio: Global Wi-Fi chipset market will grow at a CAGR of 4.15% from 2016 to 2020 According to TechNavio's report, factors likely to boost the WiFi market and drive the demand for Wi-Fi chipsets are for example the growing integration between Wi-Fi and mobile networks, the development of smart-home technology, the proliferation of Wi-

Fi-enabled mobile devices, the emergence of wearable technology, and increasing integration of WiFi into homes and enterprises. The report considers revenue generated from the sales of Wi-Fi chipsets to electronic device manufacturers for calculating the market size.

IOT ANALYTICS IoT business models will exploit the information collected by "things" in many ways — for example, to understand customer behavior, to deliver services, to improve products, and to identify and intercept business moments. However, IoT demands new analytic approaches. New analytic tools and algorithms are needed now, but as data volumes increase through 2021, the needs of the IoT may diverge further from traditional analytics.

IOT DEVICE (THING) MANAGEMENT Long-lived nontrivial "things" will require management and monitoring. This includes device monitoring, firmware and software updates, diagnostics,

crash analysis and reporting, physical management, and security management. The IoT also brings new problems of scale to the management task. Tools must be capable of managing and monitoring thousands and perhaps even millions of devices.

LOW-POWER, SHORTRANGE IOT NETWORKS Selecting a wireless network for an IoT device involves balancing many conflicting requirements, such as range, battery life, bandwidth, density, endpoint cost and operational cost. Low-power, short-range networks will dominate wireless IoT connectivity through 2025, far outnumbering connections using wide-area IoT networks. However, commercial and technical trade-offs mean

that many solutions will coexist, with no single dominant winner and clusters emerging around certain technologies, applications and vendor ecosystems.

IOT PLATFORM IoT platforms bundle many of the infrastructure components of an IoT system into a single product. The services provided by such platforms fall into three main categories: (1) lowlevel device control and operations such as communications, device monitoring and management, security, and firmware updates; (2) IoT data acquisition, transformation and management; and (3) IoT application development, including event-driven logic, application programming, visualization, analytics and adapters to connect to enterprise systems.

FEATURE

Looking Into the Pricing Structure of Managed Security Services

BY ISRAEL GOGOL, FREELANCER

The advent of cloud technology has changed existing business models in many sectors, including in the security industry. Software as a service is a common model now for both private and enterprise users. Companies can set up online stores using Amazon Web Services or manage their sales pipeline and customer relationships using Salesforce as well as other services. In the security sphere, the common offerings are video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) or access control as a service (ACaaS). Using cloud technology, users can 56 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

connect cameras or doors from different sites directly to the cloud, sparing the need for on-site recorders or other equipment. In addition, the cloud offers the ability to store data from different locations in one place and have that information accessed and shared in a centralized fashion. The major benefit managed services bring is flexibility in infrastructure and finance. Opting for a managed service offers end users flexibility in scaling their systems, either expanding or downsizing according to the business needs. From a financial perspective, it also offers the possibility of spreading the associated costs over time instead of paying a large sum upfront. Managed services also give users the chance to get better features and technological capabilities, for example video analytics or features previously available only in highend video management systems that might be out of the financial reach of smaller players. The cost saving is not only for the end user but also on the vendor side. Apart

from the initial installation, vendors also centralize their operations and can achieve efficiencies in management and maintenance, reducing the need for site visits and giving them the ability to upgrade systems in a centralized manner and address problems faster. “From a business model standpoint, managed security services such as VSaaS will appeal to companies wishing to shift from capital expenditures to monthly operating expenditures. It can simplify their budget, and make it more predictable,” said Dean Drako, President and CEO of Eagle Eye Networks. “The underlying technical foundation, whether the VSaaS offering is cloud-based or not, will also have an impact. End users can achieve higher economies of scale with a true cloud-based system, while other managed video services can be more of manpower outsourcing model, along with potentially distributing costs over a longer time period. Additionally, true cloud services are generally cyber secure and have built-in redundancies. Cloud vendors also have large teams of dedicated specialists who can evolve the solution faster from a feature standpoint.” For video surveillance, the ongoing subscription fee is generally associated with the number of cameras and video retention period. Payment is per-camera and according to the length of storage in days the end user wants. Resellers usually offer either fully managed or partially managed services. In a fully managed service, the end user signs a multi-year contract which amortizes the cost of installation and cameras over the course of the contract, along with other subscription services. With a partially managed service, the end user pays upfront for cameras and installation, and pays a monthly fee. “Our resellers follow the same monthly pricing models that we do. Some will bundle the charges into a single annual payment for the sake of simplifying invoicing, but the underlying rate structure is the same,” said Steve Van Till, President and CEO of Brivo.

Opting for a managed service offers end users flexibility in scaling their systems, either expanding or downsizing according to the business needs. Recurring monthly revenue (RMR) is of course a lucrative option for solution providers, but might be a deterrent for end users who don’t want to be tied into a recurring cost. “Resellers need to present the value proposition of hosted services in a way that makes sense — like the data plan that goes with a cellular subscription. The service is a continual benefit to the customer, so it only makes sense that there is an ongoing fee for as long as the benefit is being provided. Hosted services offer far more value than on premise alternatives,” Van Till added. In some cases, the pricing of managed services follows models common in other managed services, such as the “freemium” model. Freemium is a pricing strategy by which a product or service is provided free of charge, but money (premium) is charged for advanced features and functionality. Ivideon’s cloud video surveillance service is one such example. The company offers three pricing plans: free, premium, and professional. The free program allows users to connect up to two cameras per account. Larger numbers of cameras, longer periods of cloud storage (e.g., seven or 30 days), as well as other features are covered in the other plans. “Free and premium pricing plans are suitable for B2C users, professional pricing plan is the best choice for B2B users, and it can be customized for all types of businesses, from small to large,” said Vladimir Eremeev, Director of International Business at Ivideon.

Cloud technology has opened up many opportunities for the security industry, ranging from increased flexibility to reduced costs.

March/April 2016 mySMAhome.com 57

FEATURE WHO SHOULD CHOOSE VSaaS? Among our interviewees, many voiced their opinion that managed-service solutions are most suitable for small and medium businesses (SMBs) or large businesses made up of many smaller locations. Nikhil Shenoy, Director of Product Marketing at Kastle Systems pointed in particular to owners and managers of multi-tenant office buildings as well as the tenants themselves (most usually small/medium services companies or branches of larger enterprises) as the typical users of managed security services. These clients do not have the resources to maintain a full-time IT department or security department and managed services give them the ability to outsource a part of their operation that is not their core competence. “We generally find companies that do not have in-house security personnel (e.g., a director of security who assembles, maintains, and manages their own system with their own people) will turn to a managed security provider to outsource that part of their operations,” said Shenoy. “Any ongoing service incurs ongoing costs including: maintenance of equipment, operations staffing, and asset monitoring. In-house operations will still incur these costs and have 100 percent of the system and overhead/HR burden, whereas the recurring monthly fee of a managed service is more efficient and contained to that aspect of business operations.” Large installations are still not the ideal target for VSaaS. “Cloud VSaaS is currently less suitable for airports and installations with more than 100 cameras in a single site. Cloud VSaaS is broadly applicable elsewhere, particularly companies with multiple locations that want automated central management and the flexibility to change their service,” said Drako. “Typical customers for our cloud security camera video management system (VMS) have five to 20 cameras per location; they often have multiple locations and are seeking automated multi-site integration — some 58 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

have thousands of locations.”

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN

Managedservice solutions are most suitable for small and medium businesses (SMBs) or large businesses made up of many smaller locations.

Despite their promised benefits, for both end users and vendors, managed solutions are not fault-free. There are major concerns regarding security: how to ensure information is indeed kept secure and not shared with unauthorized parties. Another concern is service continuity and vendor “lock-in”: what happens if a solution provider goes out of business? Or how will a client transfer their data if their contract ends and they choose to switch vendors? And despite the potential lower total cost of ownership, bandwidth costs are still a major hurdle. A client with multiple sites or cameras can quickly run out of available bandwidth or rack up high costs, especially when megapixel cameras are so prevalent. However, among the advocates of VSaaS there is great optimism regarding its benefits and future success. “Cloud video surveillance service is not just a security service, it can be a perfect solution for the optimization of business processes. That is why we made our service first of all for business, and then for security. We can not only optimize time and money resources for video surveillance systems, but also improve client service, sales and increase revenue,” said Eremeev. Emphasizing these additional inputs and offering more business value in addition to lower ownership costs will no doubt greatly increase the adoption rate of managed services.

With more sensors in the home and more things becoming smart, the challenge is to come up with an app that can be used for multiple purposes. Joe Liu, CEO of MivaTek By Veronica Chen/Cindy Lin

MivaTek: Multi-Purpose App, High Affordability and Easy Setup are Key to Driving Smart Home Adoption

MivaTek’s revenue at the moment, the company has a consumer-focused brand called “Home8”. Home8 has two product lines – Smart Home for home security and environment monitoring; and Smart Care for in-home emergency, medication tracking and activity tracking. Sales channels for Home8 will include distributors as well as retailers like Fry’s, Walmart and Amazon. The core message Home8 delivers is single app control, high affordability, and simple to install and setup – three factors considered critical to driving smart home/ IoT adoption by Liu. The company acquired Oplink Connected in 2015. Built upon the “With more sensors in the home and more things expertise of Oplink Connected in developing for optical switches and becoming smart, the challenge is to come up with an app the IoT, MivaTek is a company with all-round capabilities in hardware, that can be used for multiple purposes. smart home products, in addition to traditional security. Colby Winegar, Senior Director of Innovation at Vivint Smart Home By Weili Lin

Vivint Believes Home Security and Professional Installers are Two Major Smart Home Drivers Vivint Smart Home, a leading smart home company, provides a onestop smart home service that sets the company apart from its competitors. Home security has provided Vivint a strong platform to enter and lead the smart home market. At CES 2016, Vivint unveiled the Vivint Ping camera, the first indoor camera with one-touch callout for an easy two-way talk experience. Vivint also showcased its 180-degree video doorbell camera. The Vivint Doorbell Camera, launched in 2015, has become the company’s best-selling smart home product. While voice control emerged as a prominent theme at this year’s CES, Vivint introduced new products and services to cater to the trend by integrating with Amazon Echo. Vivint also integrated Nest into its smart home platform. Its customers can connect

a Nest Thermostat to their smart home, and control it using their Vivint mobile app, Amazon Echo or the Vivint SkyControl panel inside their home.

How to Stand Out from Its Peers “Our competitive advantage is our vertically integrated operations and technology stack. This allows us to innovate quickly to meet the needs of our customers,” said Colby Winegar, Senior Director of Innovation at Vivint Smart Home. The company has its own smart home platform and develops its own connected devices. To set itself apart from DIY providers, the company manages the entire customer lifecycle from sales and installation, to 24-7 monitoring and support. The company also tries to provide affordable solutions that are easy to use. “At Vivint, we focus on providing a streamlined customer experience to help drive consumer demand and mass adoption in the connected home. When we identify a consumer need, we try to first try to integrate an existing solution. If we can’t find something that meets the needs of the customer, we develop our own innovative solution,” Winegar explained.

Customers Prefer Professional Installation More than 80 percent of Vivint’s customers are choosing to purchase smart home products, in addition to traditional security. This smart home adoption rate is significantly higher than that of its competitors.

74 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

As a smart home technology provider, Vivint commented that although the DIY segment looks exciting, the majority of today’s customers are choosing professionally installed systems. Market studies show that DIY devices are purchased primarily by first-time adopters, whereas those wishing to extend their existing services to a more comprehensive smart home solution tend to go for installer-based options. Winegar said, “Once we see other DIY products gain substantial traction, we will evaluate integrating them into our platform, as we’ve done with Amazon Echo and Nest. Once integrated, these products can be professionally installed by our service professionals.” Vivint Ping As the smart home camera supports market continues to one-touch expand and evolve, the callout for an easy two-way company believes that the talk experience future looks promising. “More than 80 percent of our new customers are choosing smart home devices, the highest in the industry, and the trend continues to grow every year,” he concluded.

We address solutions to the networking layer, which means our service does not require a hub to function between devices. Sujata Neidig, Vice President of Marketing at Thread Group By Weili Lin

Thread Brings Application Developments to the Center of Smart Home “Thread is at the forefront of IP-based mesh networking, and we intend to demonstrate how Thread provides solutions to the smart home at this year’s CES,” said Sujata Neidig, Vice President of Marketing Thread Group. Developed for consumers and devices in and around the home, Thread is an IPv6 networking protocol built on open standards for low-power 802.15.4 mesh networks that can easily and securely connect hundreds of devices to each other and directly to the cloud. “We address solutions to the networking layer, which means our service does not require a hub to function between devices,” she told SMAhome during the four-day exhibit at CES.

In order to demonstrate Thread technology’s growing market momentum in 2016, dozens of Thread-enabled consumer products using mesh networking technology have made their debut at CES 2016 in Las Vegas in January.

Thread-enabled connected devices on display at CES 2016.

With 227 active member partners currently under its belt, the Thread Group has arisen with the stated goal of creating a wireless network stack based on open standards — largely meaning that there would be no licenses or royalty fees that developers would have to pay to use the software stack. According to Neidig, the Thread Group and the ZigBee Alliance announced that protocols developed by ZigBee at the application layer will be able to run on the Thread network stack. This means that the ZigBee Home Automation protocol, which includes lighting controls and other homeautomation controls, could someday run on devices that support either the Thread or ZigBee network layers. “Under this agreement, we are bringing the industry’s most advanced, low-power networking layer experience to a complete end-to-end solution using ZigBee’s consolidated ZigBee Common Applications Library,” she explained. The value with having a smart home is to have all these devices communicate with each other without having the user do everything themselves, she added. "The partnership with ZigBee is a big stride towards reducing IoT industry fragmentation, allowing developers to market with a solution very quickly. Thread-enabled devices will simplify product development and increase interoperability, encouraging the Thread ecosystem and the connected home to flourish." With regard to its competition with Apple’s HomeKit, Neidig said the latter provides an application layer, which has to run on a networking protocol, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, adding that: “technically speaking, it can also run on top of Thread.” “Contrary to Thread, HomeKit is a relatively closed ecosystem. There are already millions of Nest thermostats working under an early version of Thread, and it can be added to any existing 802.15.4 wireless device already on the market with just a software update.” In retrospect, HomeKit and Thread are both promising solutions that possess their own advantages, and could open up a whole new world of possibilities for app developers and consumers.

ways and technologies that products can use to connect to each other. Cyril Brignone, CEO of Arrayent Inc. By Veronica Chen

Arrayent: Smart Home Compatibility in Cloud is the Trend “The IoT is a happening place, but we have yet to reach mass adoption. However, this sector is accelerating at a very fast pace,” Cyril Brignone, CEO of Arrayent Inc., explained. Arrayent provides an IoT platform that enables trusted consumer brands to quickly and securely deliver connected products and systems to market. By transforming traditional products into connected devices, the company can assist manufacturing customers develop new opportunities and lucrative channels for new, innovative products. As Brignone pointed out to SMAhome during CES 2016, there are plenty of protocols, such as Wi-Fi, Z-Wave and ZigBee, available to connect home appliances and machines. But not every product uses the same technology. That’s where Arrayent comes in with the idea of creating an oasis of compatibility up in the cloud.

Given the breakneck pace at which the Internet of things is evolving, it won’t be long before smart home devices become a mass market adoption, Cyril Brignone said, CEO of Arrayent Inc.

78 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

To date, many of the world’s respected brands have chosen Arrayent to be their solution partner, whose main priority is to deliver connected products to the cloud, including Chamberlain, Maytag Commercial Laundry, Whirlpool Corporation, OSRAM, Pentair, Salus Controls Plc, and much more. Brignone specially introduced Frebreze Fresh to SMAhome at CES. The Internet-controlled scent delivery product not only provides a way to freshen up a home, but it works with other IoT products to create a home that is truly “guest-ready”. “As a Thread member, the Arrayent cloud is able to supports our customers to bring to market actual Thread-enabled solutions.” commented Brignone. The company currently has more than 60 products launched in four different continents, he said, adding that with multiple operations centers in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, Arrayent Connect is able to support connected products around the globe, while enabling its customers to adhere to all local consumer data privacy regulations, eliminating a key hurdle in delivering connected products to market. As for the next big development, Brignone believes that compatibility tops the list. Despite efforts to develop a single land standard, there are still multiple ways and technologies that products can use to connect to each other. “Compatibility in the cloud is a major trend that is expected to help propel the smart home,” he further noted. “We’re betting big by putting together technology to make these products work well together.” What is becoming clear, however, is that businesses are starting to see the advantages of connected devices, and consumers will have many more of these products to choose from in the near future. For the interest of consumers, a ‘standardized app’ is needed to consolidate different software from different suppliers, a role which I believe the big boys can come to play. Jenny Liu, vice president of Shenzhen Heiman Technology By Lingo Lin/Cindy Lin

Big Brands Will Help Propel Mass Market Shenzhen Heiman Technology Co., Ltd, a Shenzhen-based smart home and alarm system manufacturer, has got its finger on the pulse of the burgeoning industry since 2013. However, it was only when push came to shove that things came to materialize after 2014, Heiman Vice President Jenny Liu told SMAhome. “We started the smart home in 2013, but we picked up steam in the last two years after we invested heavily in both human resources and hardware,” Liu said. The vice president thinks the smart home landscape has undergone drastic changes in the past few years, and especially in the last year.

Although the concept of smart home is still in the early stages of development in China, several companies – from e-commerce giant Alibaba to consumer electronics Haier – are placing big bets on the domestic smart home market. According to Juniper Research, China’s connected home market will likely expand to US$22.8 billion by 2018.

82 mySMAhome.com March/April 2016

“In 2013, smart home products were only smart in the sense that they could talk to each other, but consideration for user experience was lacking in general; in 2014, the market was chaotic with many players and many protocols, but there was no clear direction for development; in 2015, major international brands began to enter the play with clear development plans and strict requirements for their products, and this will certainly help propel the market.” Heiman currently offers reliable smart home systems and accessories based on ZigBee, Z-Wave and Wi-Fi technologies. Z-Wave was incorporated into the mix last year, a move that Liu said has been to meet the demand of North American consumers. The company started mass producing its smart home system for DIY users under the brand “Hismart” last year, and has witnessed a spurt in export sales in the U.S., the Middle East and Europe, including the U.K., Germany, Norway and Poland. Liu shared that besides the optimistic sales growth, the company has also received positive customer feedback on the products. “Our business model is mostly based on importers, who then channel our products and services to telecommunication companies, supermarkets, and real

estates companies for example.” According to Liu, product reliability is of high propriety for Heiman – before any products can be released to the market, they go through several rounds of testing and be trialed among the developers, project managers and clients for feedback and improvement. When asked if Heiman plans to include project-based services to its existing DIY business model, Liu told SMAhome that it plans to launch a new series of customized solutions in August this year. With regards to views on the future of smart home, Liu thinks that for the home to be truly smart, the industry will have to move towards having one standardized app for all the devices, where the app is likely developed by a giant in the space. “For the interest of consumers, a ‘standardized app’ is needed to consolidate different software from different suppliers, a role which I believe the big boys can come to play. Today, there are already unlimited numbers of smart home apps flooding the online app store,” Liu exclaimed, adding that it will only confuse users even more as they juggle between a myriad of apps by various providers. As the demand for smart technology continues to rise, customers have become increasingly picky and demanding when looking for smart products. “Domestic and international customers alike now demand more from manufacturers – they look at not just the hardware capabilities of a product but also its software capabilities, data security and interoperability,” she said. “At Heiman, we are doing everything we can to satisfy the demands of our customers.”

PREVIEW

LONDON, UK | JUNE 21-23, 2016

IFSEC INTERNATIONAL TO LAUNCH SMART ZONE FOR 2016 IFSEC International, one of Europe’s largest security exhibitions, will be featuring a dedicated Smart Zone comprising a replica ‘smart home’ fitted with latest home automation innovations from top exhibitors including Honeywell Building Solutions, Y3K, Lilin and Control 4 this year. Taking place at London’s ExCeL from 21-23 June, IFSEC International 2016 will be a strategically significant platform for presenting current technologies and research to the market as security systems and services play an increasingly vital role in building automation. The IFSEC Smart Zone will focus on the burgeoning home automation sector which will provide installers, integrators, housebuilders, housing professionals and architects with an opportunity to see and experience the latest in home automation technologies. Having recently polled the views of hundreds of installers, IFSEC International found that 92% saw the ‘smart home’ – whereby lighting, heating, alarms and other household functions are interconnected and remotely controlled via smartphone or PC – as a potential area for diversification. The survey also revealed that 88% of respondents would be more likely to attend IFSEC International if a dedicated home automation zone were introduced. Gerry Dunphy, Event Director of IFSEC & FIREX International says: “Although we sensed that home automation and smart buildings were on the brink of a growth surge, even we were taken aback by the enthusiasm among installers to move. It certainly seems to vindicate our decision to launch an area dedicated to home automation and smart buildings for IFSEC International 2016. The IFSEC Smart Zone is an important part of the show’s continuing evolution as we look to present new and diverse applications of security products and services as vital aspects of building management systems.” In addition to the IFSEC Smart Zone feature areas will be the Smart Zone Theatre, which will provide free learning and development seminars focused on home automation and smart buildings. The program will be delivered by a range of leading experts and will concentrate on key areas such as the Internet of Things, systems integration, business intelligence, building
