Asia Should Start to Prevent Cybersecurity Threats
NOVEMBER 2016 ● www.asmag.com
ast month, the East Coast of the U.S. fell victim to a cyberattack, resulting in the disruption of both the internet service and access to several major websites. The attack was caused by a Mirai-based botnet, which affected many IoT devices, including ones that were built by Chinese high-tech company XiongMai Technologies. Professionals who are familiar with Asian security companies would know the company, as it is a major provider of DVR and IP camera modules for many Chinese vendors. This breaking news shocked the global physical security industry since many of XiongMai’s customers are world leading security brands and OEM/ODM companies in C h i n a a n d Ta i w a n . H e n c e , t h e whole supply chain for the security industry was affected. When we look at the Southeast Asian market, it is evident t h a t c y b e r s e c u r i t y t h re a t s a re increasing quite enormously right now, even though the number of large enterprises is less than that of Western countries. According to SSL Trust reports and statistics, “FireEye customers in Southeast Asia have seen a 29 percent i n c re a s e i n d e t e c t e d m a l w a re during the first half of 2015. This i s 2 0 p e rc e n t h i g h e r t h a n t h e global average. Hong Kong came in first being the most affected by
cyber threats, followed closely by Taiwan and Thailand.” Gartner also pointed out Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand as countries that have invested the most in IT. From the investors’ point of view, Southeast Asia is a relatively new market for them. Speaking on the topic of recent cybersecurity threats, Vietnam suffered from a significant cyberattack this July when a Chinese hacker successfully hacked into the country’s national airline and several of its largest airports. “The Bank Indonesia also recorded an increase in cybercrime, rising to 66.7 percent in 2015, an alarming figure,” according to The Diplomat. J u s t l i k e We s t e r n c o u n t r i e s , Southeast Asia is now becoming a soft target for terrorists when it comes to cyberattacks. In light of what happened last month in the U.S., Southeast Asian countries should start to educate themselves on this issue, especially with regards to physical security systems. In this issue, we have also published the top 50 global security companies ranking and reports, launched by a&s International. Cybersecurity is becoming a top priority for these top 50 companies. We s h o u l d c a re f u l l y e v a l u a t e cybersecurity as it could become a major concern in the future when global physical security buyers select their business partners.

Seagate’s vision is simple — focus on providing smart, safe and secure solutions optimized for surveillance. But what does it mean to be optimized for surveillance? The company has a decade of experience in the industry and leverages this to build HDDs that are specifically tailored for surveillance requirements. “We see that an ideal storage combination for efficient video analytics requires data storage that is optimized

he global surveillance storage market is growing at a rapid pace, thanks to the evolving nature of customer requirements and fast-paced technological advancements. According to a report from MarketsandMarkets, the market is set to expand at a CAGR of 22.4 percent to the year 2020. Seagate Technology, a frontrunner in the field, understands this changing market better than anyone else. Speaking to a&s Asia, Sandy Sun, VP and GM for APAC and China Sales at the company, pointed out three main factors that are driving the demand. “First and foremost, there is legal compliance for longer retention period,” she said. “For example, some industries like the banking sector were required to keep their surveillance footage for a week to a month. The banking regulations now mandate that banks should retain their surveillance footage for as long as six months to even one year. This naturally heightens the need for larger storage capacity drives.” The quality of video is also on the rise. From 720p to 1080p and even 4K resolution video is becoming more and more common and this increases demand for more storage space. There are also the storage archiving requirements. Often footage is not stored in just one place, but backed up for security reasons. This too means customers need more hard disk drives (HDD).
BY Prasanth Aby Thomas
NOVEMBER 2016 ● www.asmag.com
22 For example, the surveillance market is moving more and more over to the NVR systems with multiple hard drives and HD cameras. Seagate’s latest 10TB SkyHawk drive is ideal for surveillance systems relying on large storage solutions for network video recording. Seagate SkyHawk uses rotational vibration sensors to help minimize read/write errors and can support the razor sharp vision of up to 64 cameras, more than any other drive on the market. Most importantly, its ImagePerfect firmware supports 24×7 surveillance-optimized workloads tuned to record 90 percent of the time and play back video footage of the remaining 10 percent, and supports more cameras recording at higher resolutions than traditional drives. And that’s not all. The company, in another first of its kind in the industry, offers a complete protection plan for the customers through their drive replacement and data recovery services. Seagate understands how important the video is to the customer and hence makes no compromise on providing them with the best-in-class service when they need it most.
“We see that an ideal storage combination for efficient video analytics requires data storage that is optimized for storing video footage.”
for storing video footage,” Sun said. “This doesn’t simply mean the drive should have high capacity and high speed. When Seagate calls it ‘optimized,’ it means the drive offers specific technologies that can best manage the data workload and maximize the value of the data in that specific application.”
Offering the right surveillance system is not just about technological expertise. It is about clearly understanding the needs of the markets and then coming up with solutions for it. This is why Seagate prioritizes the necessity for a strong relationship with its channels and systems integrator (SI) partners. “We connect with our customers and partners in every local market through the Seagate Partner Program,” Sun said. “Seagate has been continuously building surveillance-specialist partner base through this program, providing comprehensive training sessions and seminars as well as working on co-marketing programs. We see ourselves as not just a storage provider, but a business partner who can build the best-in-class solutions together. I am glad that our channel and SI partners see us the same way, by working with us from the first stage of projects to developing a solutions pipeline to provide consultation, establish systems and provide technical support.” Seagate is also leading the effort to develop the industry standard and build best practices. One great example is the Security Surveillance Storage Innovative Technology Industry Alliance (S3TIA) that Sun is chairing. Seagate is one of the founders of the association, which combines

“The video surveillance data is invaluable to the user to either meet industry regulations or leverage for content analysis or security — so when data loss occurs, it’s an expense to the customer,” Sun said. “This protection plan covers data recovery services at a fraction of the cost of data recovery services purchased after the event, and keeps systems in the field longer and reduces post-deployment expenses.” Such a robust strategy is indeed unique. It is no surprise then that leading security companies like Hikvision Digital Technology and Dahua Technology chose to work with Seagate to develop cutting-edge surveillance solutions.

Seagate Optimizes Sandy Sun, VP & GM, APAC and China Sales, Seagate Technology
The surveillance industry is seeing growth across verticals and Seagate has a clear perspective on its potential markets. As more and more people move to cities and more national and local governments turn to technology to help enforce and expand public infrastructure, we will see huge growth in the relevant segments. “The United Nations has projected that 66 percent of the world’s population will be living in urban cities by 2050 and Asia is a major driving force behind this phenomenon,” Sun said. “In 1950, only 17 percent of the Asian population lived in urban areas. By 2030, more than

They also work as a contributing member of ONVIF, a global and open industry forum for creating a standard on how IP products should communicate within video surveillance. Apart from these, Seagate is also a founding member of an association for unmanned aerial vehicles, in an attempt to understand and define the right storage solutions for this segment.
55 percent of the population will be urban. This amounts to an increase of the total urban population in Asia from 232 million people to 2.7 billion.” The company is well-aware of its growing potential in Asia. Governments in this region are under pressure to develop infrastructure and implement policies that can lead the way towards economically, socially and environmentally sustainable societies. A clear example of its manifestation is the number of smart city initiatives that have been springing up in the region. “In addition to this, we expect the surveillance storage needs to continue to grow in the retail and banking segments as these businesses further invest in this area,” Sun added. “These businesses are not just doing this for security, but also for better business results. We see a great opportunity for us in these segments as the businesses realize the true power of using surveillance system for their businesses to grow.” With such decisive product and channel strategies and clarity on the potential verticals, Seagate is sure to penetrate further into the market in the days to come. As the storage requirements continue to increase and remain complex, the company appears well-positioned to take full advantage of customer demands. www.seagate. com.

rom 2012 to 2014 Vietnam’s economy slowed a bit. GDP growth slid to around 5 percent as inflation rose and the country’s currency, the dong, dropped. This prompted the government to take measures to stabilize and revive the economy, and to many extents these measures have worked. This year, the World Bank forecasts Vietnam’s GDP growth will be 6.2 percent. Compared to other countries in the region, for example Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, Vietnam’s GDP growth is relatively high. As for the security industry, local security players gave an even more optimistic picture. “For security, the growth will be higher. For CCTV, we can see double-digit growth. People have become more aware of security threats, for example illegal intrusion, so

the security need is growing also,” said Nguyen Xuan Dam, Business Development Assistant Manager at Panasonic. James Cui, Sales Manager at Dahua Technology, commented on his company’s own growth in Vietnam. “For Dahua, compared with last year, this year’s growth will be more than 100 percent,” he said.
Increased Gov’t spendInG Drivers for such growth are manifold. One is increased spending by the government, which has launched various infrastructure projects where security is needed. “We do expect more spending from the government, especially in terms of infrastructure and transportation in the coming years,”
Compared to other Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam is seeing relatively high growth in its economy, and this also holds true for the country’s security industry. In Hanoi highways are being built. These will all trigger demands for security.” Aside from infrastructure projects, Vietnam is also seeing more local governments implementing safe city initiatives to boost safety. “Last year, the local government of Danang took the initiative to improve the city’s safety and security by installing thousands of surveillance cameras

ConCerns on market Conditions as growth slows THE OVERALL VALUE OF PHYSICAL SECURITY PRODUCTS HAVE GONE UP, BUT A COMBINATION OF FACTORS, INCLUDING STRENGTHENING OF CHINESE MANUFACTURERS HAVE HURT GROWTH IN THE VIDEO SURVEILLANCE SECTOR. BY Allan McHale, Director, Memoori Business Intelligence

emoori’s 2016 Annual Report shows that the total value of world production of physical security products at factory gate prices was US$28.4 billion, an increase of 4.5 percent on 2015. Over the last five years the market has grown by a CAGR of 8.2 percent, showing a significant fall in growth over the last two years. Of this, the total sum of video surveillance products at nearly $15 billion takes a share of 53 percent, access control at $6.8 billion takes a 24 percent share and intruder alarms at $6.6 billion has a 23 percent share. Access control has maintained its growth of around 10 percent this year as it further penetrates the IP network business and moves into biometrics, identity management and wireless locking systems. This is the second consecutive year that it has turned in the highest rate of growth. The intruder systems business, the “father” of the physical security industry, has long since reached maturity but its increasing use of radar and thermal cameras have contributed to growth edging up to 3.5 percent in 2016. In the video surveillance market, growth fell for the second year to 4.2 percent despite the fact that growth in volume was well up, due to the major Chinese competitors making very significant reductions to their prices in Western markets.
this will therefore rise and physical security will benefit from this. In the commercial world the demand for more comprehensive connectivity across all three of the branches of physical security business and the business enterprise will grow aided by IoT technology. This will become evident during 2017 with a moderate acceleration of growth through the following four years. We forecast a CAGR of 5.7 percent over the five-year period 2016 - 2021. Not particularly optimistic considering that it managed to grow by a CAGR of 7.8 percent during an unstable period from the end of 2010 to today. But whilst growth in volume terms will be well over 10 percent there is little chance of sales revenues achieving much more than half of this whilst the major Chinese companies continue reducing their prices in order to win market share and boost volume. There are many technology drivers that are supporting growth in the market and those that are having most influence today include: VSaaS, ACaaS, identity management, biometrics, analytics and software platforms to bring about integration across all three physical security business. Wireless communications, thermal cameras and even HD analog cameras are curtailing the flow of IP cameras into the SME market.
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENTS
DISRUPTION BY CHINESE COMPANIES
In 2016, growth in demand for physical security equipment has been highest in Asia including China despite the fact that growth has declined. Growth has been much more modest in North America whilst Europe is at the bottom of the growth league table. Memoori’s forecast for the next five years to 2021 is based on world market trading conditions continuing to slowly improve with modest gains in GDP growth in the developed world. Terrorist activities are unlikely to be quelled during the next five years and government budgets to counter
However, the major issue at the moment for all the Western-based manufacturers and stakeholders in the video surveillance business is not the disruption caused by emerging technologies but the need to quickly find a business model to compete with and stem the tide of Chinese products. Most of the successful Western manufacturers of physical security equipment have focused on one sector of the business with some specializing in a limited number of verticals and making sure that they can offer an end-to-end solution.
This still works well in the access control and intruder alarm businesses, but is now coming under threat in the video surveillance sector as the two major Chinese video surveillance manufacturers, Hikvision Digital Technology and Dahua Technology go for volume through driving down prices to meet the needs of commoditization and ensure their long-term future. Based on their protected home market and copious financial backing from the Chinese government, they have been able to pursue this strategy and have now successfully penetrated North America and parts of Europe, where they are rapidly winning market share. They now respectively hold the number one and two positions in the video surveillance market and there is no sign that this strategy will not continue to gain market share. When we published our first report on physical security in 2009 neither of these companies were considered as serious contenders in the international market place, only being formed in 2001. Hikvision listed on the SME board of the China Shenzhen Stock Exchange in May 2010 and now has a market capitalization of more than $20 billion, has a staff of over 18,000 and operates right across the globe. Both of these companies have specialized in video surveillance and are by far the largest two companies in the world, and until more recently did not have products at the leading edge in the high growth IP Network camera business. So how will Western video surveillance manufacturers redefine their business models to meet this challenge? Will the majors such as Axis, Avigilon, Bosch, Panasonic and Samsung reduce their margins to build up volume to compete with the Chinese and the longer term needs of commoditization or decide that they should invest more in innovative products that offer a better Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) metric? Price is not the king across all segments of the market and neither does TCO meet all the buyers’
“IN 2016 GROWTH IN VIDEO SURVEILLANCE PRODUCTS ACHIEVED 4.2 PERCENT, ACCESS CONTROL 10 PERCENT AND INTRUDER ALARMS 3.5 PERCENT. GROWTH IN THE VIDEO SURVEILLANCE MARKET HAS FALLEN FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR AND NOW IS LESS THAN HALF THE CAGR IT ACHIEVED IN THE PREVIOUS THREE YEARS.” requirements. Most of the Western companies mentioned above will struggle to reach the $1000 million revenue mark unless they either bring their margins in line with the Chinese competitors to win more share or deliver more innovative products that offer a better TCO metric. We suspect that they will go for the latter and combine this by achieving scale through merger and acquisitions.
NEED TO FIND A WINNING STRATEGY Under these circumstances you would have expected Western manufacturers to have seen this problem coming and have been more aggressive in the acquisition of video surveillance manufacturers in order to increase volume and benefit from the inevitable growth of commoditization of video cameras. But this has not yet happened on a scale to make much difference. A further retreat into specialization is not a particularly desirable solution and is likely to force companies that go down this route to eventually become system suppliers. However, with the growth of the IoT, this could be a strategy worth pursuing for some and let the product manufacturers fight on price and lower margins.
This has been taken from the eighth edition of Memoori’s Annual Report “The Physical Security Business 2016 to 2021”.

THe Smart Factory revolution is Here NOVEMBER 2016 ● www.asmag.com
A transformation is taking place in the manufacturing segment. Factories are becoming smarter and the production process is getting more efficient. To some, this would seem a natural evolution in the sector; to others, this is the most important change that the manufacturing segment has witnessed in years. BY Prasanth Aby Thomas

erhaps the buzzword of this decade is “smart.“ No industry is exempt from it. From phones to homes and buildings, all are trying to be labelled as such. And one industry that is taking serious interest in it is manufacturing. Known by various names, from smart, intelligent factories to the larger concept of industry 4.0, the manufacturing sector is slowly witnessing a revolution that could make its impact felt across several other divisions. “At the heart of any smart factory is intelligence,” said Andy Ward, CTO of Ubisense. “At Ubisense, we believe location intelligence is an essential component of this: if something moves and it is process-critical, you need to know where it is and what it is doing. Industry 4.0 describes an environment in which flexible, intelligent processes leverage real-time data from sensors connected across the entire value chain to enable optimization of industrial processes. These cyber-physical systems leverage big data analytics to translate full operational visibility into unprecedented manufacturing agility and efficiency.” Others point out that the terminology could be different depending on where you are, but the concept remains the same.
Johnny Chang, Associate VP, iAutomation Systems and Solutions Group, Advantech
Jerry Huang, Project Manager, IEI Integration
“There are multiple definitions depending on the region where this topic gets covered,” said Aloke Palsikar, Senior VP and Global Head for the Manufacturing Vertical at Tech Mahindra. “However, going beyond the conventional definitions of the terms ‘smart factory’ or ‘industry 4.0,’ to me, these terms reflect the fundamental shift in terms of how technology is changing the face of manufacturing processes through ‘connected architecture.’ Today, various stages of manufacturing processes right up to the lowest level of a machine or equipment are now getting directly connected through sensors/ IoT and are able to communicate directly with each other making the whole chain transparent and more efficient. The machines, the equipment can now be enabled not only to communicate with each other, but also with their higher and lower systems, and to take intelligent decisions independent of human intervention. This is the modern smart factory.” “A smart factory is an industry that leverages on IoT devices to improve the efficiency, continuity and security of its operations,” said Andrea Sorri, Director of Business Development for Government, City Surveillance and Critical Infrastructures at Axis Communications. “Real-time and remote communication among the production components and the operators enables factories to be a showcase for automation.” Johnny Chang, Associate VP for iAutomation Systems and Solutions Group at Advantech, pointed out that that the company defines smart factory concept in two phases. “Currently we define these as two separate phases,” Chang said. “For instance, smart factory is part of industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 will include the design phase, manufacturing phase and the logistic phase. The whole thing is called 4.0, but smart factory becomes the middle of the process.” Jerry Huang, Project Manager at IEI Integration, elaborated further on the topic. “From my observation, smart factories need at least four elements,” Huang said. “The first one is machine-tomachine integration. The second thing would be the domain knowledge. The third thing would be the business intelligence

ncreasing security concerns and advancements in technology have forced access control companies to come up with innovative solutions. One such measure has been the combination of physical and logical access control systems.
Experts concur several factors need to be considered while integrating physical and logical access control systems.
To industry experts, this presents as one of the most efficient entry management solutions. “Integrating physical and logical security provides the benefit of simplifying user management whilst increasing security,” said Mike Sussman, Technical Director at TDSi. “Integration ensures that

any change to a user’s profile is updated in all systems without any delay. In these cases, security is often managed by the IT staff, with the benefit of reducing a requirement for extra staff to manage the access control system and to concentrate on risk and compliance. Integration also has the benefit of increasing security as a functionality, such as restricting logical access if no physical access has occurred, reduces tailgating and thereby increasing site security.” But there are several factors to consider when integrating physical and logical access control. According to Daniel McVeagh, Senior Product Manager at Gallagher, logical and physical access systems both share the need for robust methods for authenticating an individual at the keyboard or door.

“Sites are increasingly looking to standardize on the authentication methods used for both logical and physical systems, with both linking back to single point of truth for the individual’s identity,” McVeagh said. “Factors that need to be considered in achieving this are what authentication factors (e.g., smartcards, biometrics, PINs, etc.) can be used by both the logical and physical systems, how issuance and maintenance of the factors are controlled by the organization (e.g., are different departments managing credential issuance for logical and physical access systems?), and what linkages do both systems have back to the database storing single point of truth for the individual’s identity.” Mitchell Kane, President of Vanderbilt Industries, said one of the main factors that organizations must consider with this type of access control is the security of the data being transmitted. “Logical access controls are used to protect the network — for identification, authentication and authorization on a computer,” Kane said. “Combining the two spheres enhances protection in the event of an attempted breach. As an example, if someone does not access the building, but attempts to log in to a computer on the premises, that would trigger a red flag on the network. Combining the two takes security one step further to bolster network security and alert officials in the event of a potential threat. As with the shift from analog to IP video in the industry’s surveillance sphere, the network integrity must be taken into account when merging physical and logical access. This shift also brings into play a positive

Amazon Alexa:
A
Fleet ng Trend or the Future? By a&s SMAhome

Remember the late 80s Clapper TV commercial? An advert that touted the convenience of being able to turn things on and off remotely by clapping — made possible by a sound-activated electrical switch that can control ordinary home appliances on any standard power outlet.
Fast-forward the clock 30 years later, the technology behind the Clapper may seem outdated, but the concept of using sound to control your home never ceases to wow us. Today, voice control is again the talk of the town, a feature that is closely regarded as one of the main components of future smart devices. Interestingly, Amazon’s popular Echo is certainly the one that helped revitalize this longlost fantasy — the ability for us to interact with the devices around us through sound and voice, also dubbed as the home assistant. Conceived in 2014, Echo is a smart speaker capable of voice interaction and music playback as well as making to-do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audiobooks, and providing weather, traffic and other real-time information. It can also control a wide array of smart devices using itself as a home automation hub. To many people, the Alexa assistant — the cream of the crop behind this newfangled device — is about as robust as Siri, which has been Apple’s voice assistant inside the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV since 2011.
BECOMING MORE PERCEPTIVE Getting a device to answer your calls or respond to simple commands will not be enough to replicate the same level of excitement that was
incited by the Clapper, which managed to give us the first glimpse of a smart, magical home of the future. As such, Amazon is said to be using new natural-language processing techniques for Alexa that will allow it to recognize emotional tone and apologize for misunderstandings. A c c o rd i n g t o o n l i n e s o u rc e s , t h e improvements are likely to help Alexa interpret ambiguous requests more accurately by applying probability techniques. But most of all, the upgrade will enable Amazon to stay on top of the game as Google, Microsoft and Apple ramp up their own voice-assisted services for the connected home space. The additional tweaks could help Alexa remember what a person had said previously, and apply that knowledge to subsequent interactions while considering his or her emotional tone.
EXPANSION OR RESTRICTION? So far, a handful of companies have released or promised to release products with Alexa built into them, which now includes about 1,900 third-party skills from a range of companies, including Insteon, D-Link, Honeywell, and many others.
Jerry Chen, CEO, Dexatek Technology
“The flexibility of Amazon Alexa and the open source nature of its Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) SDK are compelling features to boot. By opening things to the wider developer community, Alexa will become more skilled and competent as a virtual assistant. But the only downside is that it is only available in English.”
