EDITOR’S NOTE Philippines: The Next Emerging Country For Security

KEEP IN TOUCH WITH...

The next emerging country in Asia for security seems be the Philippines, followed by countries such as India, Vietnam and China. Even though the country is often a subject of international headlines because of its involvement in the South China Sea dispute and its controversial president, Rodrigo Duterte, its recent GDP growth and social economic status makes it the next up and coming country in Asia. The Philippines is still suffering from drug trafficking and money laundry issues. As such, the government has imposed many strict regulations to crack down on high crime rates. Regardless of the legitimacy and political correctness of its government policies, the country is focusing much of its attention on strengthening local security. The “no CCTV, no permit” regulation has been implemented in the country for a while now. Its government has also urged all the public buses to install surveillance cameras to deter bus robberies. The cities are competing with each other on their security equipment upgrades. According to our recent interviews with local security professionals, the security market growth in the Philippines looks promising for 2017. We can expect the Philippines to be the next momentum for growth in the Asian security market. We hope you enjoy our report on the Philippine market!

PRODUCTS OF THE MONTH Nightingale Security Robotic Aerial Security

Stronger awareness with drones and drone detection Editor’s Note: Security and surveillance have moved beyond simply setting up a stationary camera. The introduction of drones has expanded the possibility of receiving a greater range of information by having aerial drones monitor areas that were previously difficult for people to see. Having an eye in the sky allows for better security and safety as drones can quickly spot threats or incidents and send out alerts in different settings from industries to cities. The benefits that aerial drones bring can also become a security threat in some areas. Unwanted drones are an issue for highly protected facilities if they are flying around the perimeters. To counter this problem, drone detectors can be set up to detect suspicious objects and send messages or alerts to users that will inform them of drones flying into the restricted range. Some detectors possess features that can recognize the model of the drones or identify it as a bird.

Milestone Embraces Partner Community In the highly competitive and dynamic video surveillance industry, it is important to stay ahead of the curve. Milestone’s extensive partner community, coupled with its open platform technology, has enabled it not just to connect devices and solutions, but to also strengthen ties with its solution partners across the globe. As a result, there are vast opportunities for interaction and growth.

ver the years, Milestone Systems has established a strong reputation in the security industry as a leading open video management solution (VMS) platform provider. With 23 offices around the world, Milestone Systems has a strong global presence, especially with the recent opening of their Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore. When asked about the past year, Benjamin Low, Vice President for APAC at Milestone Systems was reflective. “2016 was a positive one for the company in Asia with solid growth across the region.”

A Look BAck At 2016

January 2017 ● www.asmag.com

While business continues to boom, this growth did not come without challenges. 2016 was marked by a changing political landscape, with concerns over economic stability prompting companies to restrain spending and project delays. Price became a decisive point for many, inducing increased competition in the industry, and a “race to the bottom” in pricing across the board. Adapting to these challenges, Milestone looked to better support its partners in Asia by understanding the needs and issues faced. Low said, “This is not just about the bottom-line. At Milestone, we spend a lot more time working closely with our partners in the region, not just on the pricing aspect of our software, but also on how we can drive more value for all parties involved — be it in terms of selling value, or pitching to their end users to help them reduce some of the dependencies. We also try to work around challenges like currency depreciation, which I think a lot of countries are facing as well.” Acting as a business enabler or partner, rather than a supplier or vendor, Milestone aims to create a community that can offer more business opportunities for the whole community. “They partner with us, we bring them into some of our opportunities and they gain a lot of value out of it. But also because of this connectivity that they have with us, we are also being let into a lot of opportunities with them,” said Low. “They put

us into the platform and once a Milestone solution is implemented, they can then pull in a lot of other different solutions for the customers themselves, from different brands of hardware to cameras to storage; and because we can connect with so many things, they can adapt to their customers’ changing needs.”

New TechNologies AheAd iN 2017 Looking forward, Low sees continued growth in the Asian security market that will be, in part, driven by the need for increased security around the globe, leading to a potential pick up in verticals ranging from government, enterprises to city surveillance. New technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data are expected to continue to reshape businesses, and the security industry will not be exempt as customers are now looking to drive more intelligence from video surveillance. Cloud-based services, such as video surveillance as a service (VSaaS), will also slowly gain traction in the industry,

THIS OPENNESS THAT MILESTONE HAS, ALONG WITH THE ABILITY TO CONNECT TO PARTNERS AROUND THE WORLD, HAS ALWAYS BEEN OUR WINNING KEY DIFFERENTIATOR. WE SEE THIS AS A VALUE AND WILL CONTINUE TO EMBRACE THIS MINDSET GOING FORWARD.

owing to customers who may seek to outsource the management of their systems. According to Low, these new technologies has placed Milestone in a very good position as its open VMS platform allows the easy integration of hardware, software and solutions as well as the addition of other advanced technologies. “That allows us to keep ourselves in the running, keep up with the trends and work with the best IoT products out there — from telecommunications service providers, to cloud data centers that wants to do more video, and video surveillance as a service and everything,” said Low. “This openness that Milestone has, along with the ability to connect to partners around the world, has always been our winning key differentiator. We see this as a value and will continue to embrace this mindset going forward,” he added. As innovation and collaboration comes to the forefront, Milestone is also able to tap into a large community for new ideas and integrations, and this has become a unique selling point for the company. “We look towards our community, the people who can probably do certain, or a lot of, things better than us in many areas that we would never think of,” said Low. “By working closely with our partners and customers, we learn to understand and adapt to their business needs and provide options as needed. As a result, this mutually reciprocal relationship with our partner community has created many opportunities, and resulted in us having an all-time high in terms of our partnership numbers.”

TargeTing asia for growTh The APAC region has always been one of the key growth pillars attributed to Milestone’s success. Hence, it aims to strengthen its presence and partnerships in Asia, which started with the opening of its regional headquarters in Singapore in 2016. To target the local market, Milestone has worked with university research and development laboratories in India, China and Singapore. “ They are developing very

strong applications that may not be applicable to other parts of the world, but are very focused on addressing local business issues. With us being an open platform and our strong SDK, this allows them to connect with us and with the rest of the security world as well,” said Low. “This has been a key advantage and a key value for many of our partners here.” Fostering a culture of innovation is certainly another highlight for Milestone. In 2017, the first ever Asia Pacific Milestone Integration Platform Symposium (MIPS) will be held, where more than 200 customers, partners, and industry experts across Asia will come together to network, collaborate, engage in dialogue sessions and workshops. “If you are our partner participating in a partner event like MIPS, you are immediately exposed to our entire community of resellers to distributors, and this allows you to leverage our partnerships, resellers, distributors to expand your personal and professional network,” elaborated Low. Symposiums such as MIPS established a marketplace platform for partners to bring their products and software to a global audience. At the same time, users can access this to search, download and immediately integrate solutions into their applications. “This creates a win-win, mutually beneficial relationship that everybody can embark on, utilize, earn money with, so that’s something that is really, really cool,” he added.

Long-Term Thinking for SucceSS From the very start, Milestone has stuck firmly to its original mindset of providing customers with future proof software to create new, innovative security solutions. This same commitment to creating long-term partnerships within a global ecosystem will guarantee the success of Milestone’s future in an increasingly connected world.

TRANSPORTATION

AUSTRALIAN HIGHWAY DEPLOYS AXIS TRAFFIC SOLUTION EastLink is the 39-kilometer freeway in Melbourne’s South East suburbs in Australia that connects the Eastern, Monash, Frankston and Peninsula Link freeways. The freeway has an Automatic Video Incident Detection (AVID) System as part of its critical safety systems. EastLink was required to upgrade its video detection solution by adding new hardware and migrating to an IP solution. Axis Communications was able to provide such a solution with its

encoders. These Axis video encoders allow access of video streams from any location on the network and encode the video to IP, enabling implementation of a full hot standby detection system in the disaster recovery center. The final solution offered full business continuity with a seamless switch to a digital solution without interfering with the live system. This flexibility provided a fully functional AVID system and enabled safe operation.

he Philippines is an ever growing country with constant investment being made toward enhancing the nation’s economy. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the GDP was 7.1 percent in the third quarter of 2016, which was higher than the second quarter growth rate of 7 percent. As the economy of the country is growing, so is the security market. “In 2015, we saw the security market in the Philippines grow at a steady rate. However, in 2016, we have observed an uptick in growth, which according to Statista, the security market will grow to US$10 million by the end of the year,” said Alex Tan, ASEAN Director of Sales for Physical Access Control System at HID Global. Local systems integrators agreed that the security market has been on the rise in 2016. “If I would analyze the gross sales of our company from 2015 and 2016, I would say that 2016 is better, prices of CCTV systems were higher since most of our clients shifted from analog to IP cameras, and the cost

difference is huge compared to the old model,” said Mary Ann Navarro, CEO of Extinguished. The security market is also seeing growth through increased spending from end users. Several systems integrators in the country noted that many companies are now more willing to allocate more of their budgets toward security, installing better security systems that can reduce cost of operation and improve efficiency. Max Chayco, GM of NETDOC, believes that 2017 will be better than 2016 as more government spending is expected in the infrastructure sector.

Beyond Surveillance:

Fire and Smoke For a long time, users operating plants, factories and other critical facilities relied on traditional sensing technology for fire and smoke detection. But sensors, effective as they are, have certain limitations. It is against this backdrop that video image fire detection, which uses analytics embedded in cameras to detect fire, presents itself as an alternative or complement to traditional sensors. BY William Pao

ompared to traditional fire or smoke detectors or sensors, video image detection for fire and smoke is relatively young and has been in the market for only some 10 years. At first, the technology did not really catch up. Over-expectations for the technology and initial high false alarm rates had caused a generate distrust among users. Yet over time, with improvements in hardware and software as well as more successful applications, video image fire detection has gained wider acceptance among users. “The improved CPU power of cameras, increasing image quality, and decreasing price has made these solutions more popular and reliable than they were 10 years ago,” said John De Blonde, Director of Product Line Management at Xtralis. De Blonde added that in certain countries, a visual element is required for fire verification, and this has also triggered demand. “The fire/smoke detection market suffers from false alarms, which can impact the responses of emergency services. Certain fire and rescue services in the U.K. will not attend an automatically detected and reported fire, unless it is ‘visually verified’ — and there are indications that other European countries will follow suit,” he said.

BENEFITS OF VIDEO IMAGE FIRE DETECTION One benefit of video image fire detection is quicker detection time, as it literally “sees” fire or smoke rather than sensing it once smoke reaches a sensor

Peter Jen, President, GKB Security

Sören Wittmann, Product Manager, Special Detectors, Bosch Security Systems

that is usually mounted on the ceiling. “The analytics are detecting in the entire field of view of the camera, usually from floor to ceiling, while other detectors must be installed at the ceiling and must wait for the smoke to reach them. Even aspiration detectors must wait for the smoke to reach the ceiling or aspiration point. In some cases smoke does not reach conventional smoke detectors due to stratification,” said Rick Jeffress, Director of Business Development at Fike. “Conventional spot detectors cover an area of 900 square feet, however approved coverage for video image detection is 7,800 square feet and greater using a performance-based design.” “Video is becoming a trend in fire detection because it can help to close gaps where existing codes of practice have ‘blind spots’ due to a lack of adequate technologies. This is particularly evident when fire detection takes too long, for example due to high ceilings,” said Sören Wittmann, Product Manager for Special Detectors at Bosch Security Systems. “Video-based fire detection can detect flames and smoke within the monitored area within seconds and regardless of ceiling height. Thanks to its optical detection, video-based fire detection does not have to wait until smoke or heat has reached its mounting position as is the case with classic fire detection.”

perimeters of facilities, and the annual maintenance is performed through software rather than simulated at each camera,” said Jeffress. “Many choose video image fire detection in hazardous areas since annual maintenance is performed through software, and there’s no need to go into the room with the detector. Setup of systems is often performed with factory support remotely with screen sharing to assure smooth and quick configuration, commissioning and handover.” Also, video image fire detection can better withstand pollutants or other harmful agents in critical areas. “In contrast to existing smoke detection technologies, video-based fire detection is robust against dust and humidity — a combination that very quickly pollutes standard technologies,” Wittmann said.

How it works At the core of video image fire detection is the fire- or smoke-detecting algorithm, which can reside in the camera or on a server, depending on the system

design. Basically, the analytics monitors movements of light patterns relative to a stable background. If the movement is consistent with known smoke or flame movement patterns, then an alarm will be issued. “Cameras trained on the area or process being monitored collect reference images, which are monitored by analytic software for changes of lighting across pixels that coincide with learned patterns that indicate the presence of dust, oil mist, flame, reflected flame, or smoke in the image,” Jeffress said. “The system uses artificial intelligence and has been ‘trained’ via exposure to real and false fires on how to recognize signs of trouble.” “We have various type of algorithms,” said Peter Jen, President of GKB Security. “They recognize fire and smoke based on their color, shape and movement.”

Other Components Video image fire detection needs a minimum of one camera and a system which is able to show the alarms. “This may be a video management system, a building management system or a fire panel,” said Wittmann. “Video-based fire detection is a customized solution. Depending on the requirements of the customer and the fire protection concept, additional components or connections can be included. For example, network video recorders based on iSCSI for alarm-

Ease of Installation, Maintenance Another advantage of video image fire detection is ease of installation and maintenance, which can facilitate installers and repairmen as they perform their tasks. “Video image detection cameras are easy to install on walls or

ruise ships are like floating mini cities — they have their own stores, restaurants, casinos and entertainment venues, among others. Filled to capacity, a cruise ship could have over 6,000 passengers aboard at any given time. With so much going on and such a large number of people, safety and security are paramount to ensure cruise goers are allowed to sit back and relax. As an industry, cruises are a major part of global tourism. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) estimated roughly 24 million passengers would travel on cruise lines globally in 2016, a number that has steadily increased year by year. Not only have passenger numbers increased, the number of routes and ships have also seen rapid growth.

This increase has had a direct impact on the demand for security and safety equipment. Nowadays, modern cruise ships are large, complex vessels with integrated electrical and network systems. New ships like the Harmony of the Seas, currently the world’s largest passenger ship at a length of 1,188.1 feet and capacity of over 6,000 passengers and 2,000 crew, have advanced network infrastructure. “Newer ships typically have IP network infrastructure deployed throughout which is used for a range of services including the ship’s system, IT,

Cruise industry FaCts

The cruise industry is a major contributor to the overall global tourism industry. According to the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA), cruise travel outpaced general leisure travel in the U.S. by 22 percent, between 2008 and 2014. The cruise industry is growing at a fast pace. In 2015, there were 448 cruise ships, with another 27 scheduled to debut in 2016. The Caribbean was the most popular destination in 2016, making up a total of 33.7 percent of all cruise line deployments. While the U.S. cruise industry continues to dominate the global market, other regions around the world have seen major growth in the last 10 years. The total passenger numbers in Australia grew six-fold from 2004 to 2014, reaching over 1 million from only 150,000. Interest in cruises has also grown in Asia, with a passenger capacity of 2.2 million in 2015.

internet, entertainment, retail, communications and security, said Jeff Whitney, VP of Global Marketing at Arecont Vision. These new technologically advanced ships provide the framework for equally advanced security systems. Furthermore, with cruise lines spending their resources on people and security systems to provide protection without access to lethal weapons, they must focus on preventing and deterring events before they escalate. Comprehensive safety and security measures are the only way to achieve this goal.

he cruise industry has been receiving a lot of media attention regarding security onboard its vessels. From people falling overboard to physical and sexual assaults to vandalism and theft, cruise ships are subject to a wide range of different security and safety threats. When it comes to video surveillance, all of the aforementioned have a direct and positive impact on its demand. From a technology standpoint, these incidents have driven demand for upgrading current video management systems aboard cruise vessels. The addition of intelligent video algorithms, use of 360-degree cameras, high-definition video feeds and advanced video forensic capabilities for enhanced video search as well as man overboard detection technology are all examples of upgrade measures cruise line operators are deploying.

Increased surveIllance needs With fears around terrorism heightened and a general

SlipS and FallS — did They or didn’T They?

Slip-and-fall incidents on cruise ships are one of the most common personal injury suits filed against cruise line operators. “Some passengers can find themselves being a bit opportunistic in false slip and falls and other false acts that attempt to hold the cruise ship liable,” said Anthony Incorvati, Business Development Manager of Critical Infrastructure and Transportation at Axis Communications. In situations such as these, having video evidence of such slips and falls provide the necessary proof to determine which party is at fault. Video surveillance thus is an essential component to a cruise vessel’s risk management and liability.

need to feel safer, cruise ship operators must do everything they can to ensure the safety of all those aboard. By deploying a comprehensive security system made up of access control, identity management and video surveillance, ship operators are able to better ensure all personnel are kept safe. Regulations such as the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 require cruise vessels to comply with certain security system requirements. “Cruise ship operators strive to stay compliant with various regulations, and video surveillance is at the center of these requests,” said Jumbi Edulbehram, Regional President for Americas at Oncam. “The goal is to have visual evidence of incidents, criminal activity or unsafe behavior.” As the core of any good security system, the importance of a robust video surveillance solution is imperative, and an IP video surveillance is particularly well suited to the needs of cruise ships, explained Anthony Incorvati, Business Development Manager of Critical Infrastructure and Transportation at Axis Communications. “For a cruise ship, we are talking about the perfect storm when it comes to so many different subcategories of users and environments. In one location we have casinos, restaurants, hotels, day and night operations, diverse climate and lighting conditions, diverse areas from many nooks and crannies (both passenger and operations areas — power plant, kitchens, etc.) to larger open deck spaces,” he said. Such a surveillance system is able to support this variety of users and uses in a ship environment.

less cameras, more coverage Cruise ship operators, like most security operators, are constantly looking to reduce security and surveillance costs while at the same time improve coverage, image quality and situational awareness. One way of doing this is by reducing the number of cameras used by replacing them with cameras that can

Zonoff: Delivering the Smart home CuStomer experienCe By Kevin Garton, Chief Marketing Officer, Zonoff (originally published in SMAhome issue 17)

The smart home user experience is often associated with an attractive industrial design and a wellpresented user interface (UI). While both design and UI are critical, the smart home user experience must be integrated within the overall customer journey. It should be as comprehensive as the lives and families it hopes to support. To ensure a vibrant future for the smart home market, companies will need to deliver seamless, highvalue and end-to-end experiences for their consumers. Five mutually re i n f o rc i n g f a c t o r s t h a t d r i v e successful engagement include 1) aligning your business model and brand; 2) defining the initial use case; 3) supporting the buying and installation experience; 4) enabling the right user interaction; and 5) communicating effectively throughout.

Business Model and Brand alignMent

January 2017 ● www.asmag.com

A consumer’s first encounter with a smart home offering occurs long before they open up a box or download an app. To ensure the strongest possible foundation for this journey, clarify your monetization strategy and acquire as much insight about your target market as possible. Then, align your brand and business model by following these rules: Rule 1: Do not assume your industry will follow the same

46

Even the youngest consumers have a good idea of how to manipulate things around the home, from door locks to floor lamps to thermostats.

business model as others. Although a home improvement retailer, energy utility and insurance company may all have smart home packages and even deal with similar appliances or devices, their business models will vary greatly. The retailer aims to increase sales and revenue; the utility, to influence energy consumption patterns; and the insurer, to reduce the frequency and average cost of claims. Rule 2: Understand your customer. Consider your customers’ likely behaviors, interests, desires and wants/ needs when they first begin evaluating the capabilities of a smart home. Leverage consumer data and customer insights to design an experience that helps them achieve their goals and design the use cases that will make that possible. Ask yourself: • What outcome are they looking to achieve? • How can we improve their current circumstances? • How valuable or urgent is that outcome? • What alternatives do they have available to them to achieve that outcome? • How do they expect your brand would help them get there? Rule 3: Align with your brand. Brand positioning will dictate the nature of a Smart Home offering. Consider that a high-end home insurance company, which has built its brand reputation on “being there” for its policyholders, will require a more sophisticated, turnkey home monitoring and alert offering than one that is positioned as the streamlined, costsaving alternative in the market. Companies should also take into account current interactions between the brand and its customers. A consumer’s first smart home purchase may be a smart door lock purchased from a home improvement store — purchased there because the consumer associates the device with that store instead of an electronics or office supply store where it is also available. When possible, leverage the strengths of your brand. Home security companies are adding home automation sub-brands under their existing home security master brand in order to capitalize on existing brand equity. The costly alternative is to create new entities.

defining the experience Businesses must be bold when determining their ultimate

smart home vision, whether it involves safety or energy efficiency, health or some other goal. Although there are thousands of Smart Home capabilities, certain subsets will more naturally align with your offering than others. One or two will emerge as the best place to start your customer on their journey. Keep it simple. Promote a use case that is easy to master and love. Even one or a limited number of use cases or particular activities requires heavy lifting. Behind the scenes, you will be vetting the device ecosystem: establishing interoperability and compatibility, se t t i n g q u a l i t y con trol ac ros s hardware, software and service partners, and continuously testing. After customers have adopted their first smart home application, you have a captive audience of subscribers or loyal customers. Talk to them. Use systems analytics to understand how they are really leveraging their initial smart home features. Segment users with similar patterns and plan the next best experience for each group. Use these patterns to influence product design and development as well as communications to the customer base. Make it a goal to help them along their smart home journey.

the Buying and installation experience If you have been true to your brand and responsive to the needs of your customer segments, you will have customers who buy in. Make it as easy to select a use case as it is to buy a household item online. Provide clear expectations as to what happens next. Offer a checklist of next steps, links to helpful explainer videos and automated e-mails leading to the arrival of their product or visit from their installer. Think about coordinating sales and installation. Consider a smart lock installation. What finishes will you

offer? Which ones will the installer carry? If there is a keyhole, can it be matched to the house key that opens other doors? Given these complexities, is it better for customers to select their locks online ahead of time? How will selections be orchestrated and integrated into the field-team’s scheduling system? Whether professionally or self-installed, this experience reinforces the decision to buy and sets future expectations. In these moments, a user determines if it is an easy or difficult system, perceives it as “valuable” or “costly” and decides if it will be a temporary tool or their first interaction with something that will be a critical part of their lives for years to come. For professional installs, an efficient process boosts workforce productivity, but for the customer, it also indicates that the system, although powerful, is simple to manage. To boost efficiency and customer satisfaction at this step, follow these tips: • Train and arm your installers with technological aids that ensure a working system and limit time spent in the home. • Select an ecosystem of devices that requires few modifications, supported by a platform-agnostic gateway/hub device. • Facilitate a speedy set up. For example, wireless stick-on sensors, if they align with your brand, accelerate the install and avoid the need to drill into walls or doors. • Demonstrate the UI and have the customer execute a few simple controls. • Make sure the installer or remote customer support agent confirms the system is working correctly before ending a session or leaving the premises. The backend installer or customer service portal should ensure that things are ready for the consumer to take over on their own. Smart devices excite like all new gadgets, but this smart device also solves a real problem or fills a particular need that your customers recognized during the buying process. Once the product is set up, they are ready to confirm their decision and your promises. They will want to play, show off and put the system through its paces. This great flurry of initial use will occur when they have the least experience with the device or system and are most curious to discover its capabilities. Consider providing a start-up screen with a list of “things to try.” These are related use cases that you have pre-programmed to work flawlessly and allow customers to explore.

user interaction This consumer interaction with a smart home system is where the consumer IoT industry puts much of its focus — and for good reason. Companies prototype, build and test with consumers to ensure the right experience, i.e., that buttons are in the “right place” and that the system’s power and capabilities lie beneath a simple, intuitive interface. Key questions to consider are how consumers control and access
