EDITOR’S NOTE Experience Startup Innovations in Asia

KEEP IN TOUCH WITH...

Artificial intelligence and IoT, the top tech trends in the ICT industry, were once again featured in Computex Taipei, in Taiwan, this month. What captured most of the people’s attention is its startup exhibition, InnoVEX, which gathered venture capitalists, manufacturers and startup teams from all over the world under one roof. InnoVEX also showcased the profound innovation capabilities of companies in Asia. Investors were able to network with startups and industry professionals in order to build up smart IoT ecosystems. Several companies showcasing smart IoT solutions that can improve the security and safety of our lives also made it as finalists of the pitch contest. Amarillo International provides turn-key solutions to transform conventional surveillance cameras into robotic cameras, with auto-tracking and facial recognition. SmartFuture turns accessories into an emergency transmitter for women’s safety. Many other startups also used artificial intelligence to provide multiple data-driven and “out-of-the box” solutions for enterprises. Conventional manufacturers can find potential eco-partners from these startups to create different solutions for their customers. The latest developments in artificial intelligence create great opportunities for startups to grow. Asia, in particular, attracts many investors from all over the world since it offers a complete supply chain for the ICT industry. In the next five years, we can foresee how artificial intelligence and IoT will reshape security and other vertical markets.

Joe Liu, CEO, Mivatek

The Internet of Things (IoT) remains a mere concept for most of the current security projects. Now, Worldwide Alarm, a company of Mivatek, which came from the ICT industry, believes its highly interactive and scalable solution can help change the landscape of the industry. BY Jill Lai

T

he current alarm monitoring industry faces a variety of challenges that comes from the use of legacy systems. Communication via phone lines/cellular and limited upgrade options for video and automation services cause high false alarms rates. Whenever a false

alarm occurs, the extra cost is usually very high. Moreover, traditional alarm systems require complicated installations which can be quite costly for both the dealers and end customers. Worldwide Alarm, a company of Mivatek, with a strong ICT background, now intends to revolutionize the traditional alarm industry with its open cloud-based IoT platform and strong RMR potential.

Wo r l d w i d e A l a r m i s a 2 0 1 5 O p l i n k Communications spin-off, with headquarters in the U.S. and global operation offices in Taiwan and China. Joe Liu, CEO of Mivatek, said his company’s offerings give professional dealers valuable tools to generate extra recurring monthly revenue (RMR), which is always a challenge in an industry plagued by short profit margins. “For professional dealers, any opportunity to increase RMR is a welcome addition to their sales arsenal,” Liu said. “Through Worldwide Alarm, we are providing them with solid RMR potential while offering their customers high-quality systems to keep them safe and secure.”

12

Liu went into further detail, explaining that “In order to penetrate the traditional alarm market, we provide dealers with an alarm relay, through which the traditional alarm panel can be immediately connected to the customers’ existing systems. Most importantly, the customers don’t have to pay much for the video verification service. Compared to many major alarm service programs, we can offer a very cost-effective program for dealers to up-sell and for customers to get video service. In addition to video verification, we can also increase other RMR from home automation, security, safety, energy control and independent living assistance under one platform.”

tuRN-Key ViDeo-VeRifieD seRVice PlatfoRM with collaboRatiVe PRotectioN The open, cognitive, scalable and mobile interactive platform is designed to enable global telcos, MSO, ISP and cellular service providers, as well as security dealers, to enhance their valueadded services. At the same time, they will also stand to benefit from increased RMR, additional cellular-line sales/average revenue per user (ARPU), premises’ data analytics and mobile-push ads income. The Worldwide Alarm platform, an add-on interactive, video-verified solution and service for professional alarm dealers, stands out with unique special features. First, it offers collaborative protection. Worldwide Alarm not only authorizes video users and assigns emergency contacts, but also provides an extra service that will import the local first responders such as the police, fire departments and hospitals according to the location of the users. So for instance, if users are alerted to an event via their mobile phones, the local police department can be directly contacted for immediate, prioritized support, bypassing the call center. In addition, the patented zero-pairing technology

in the cloud allows for simple one-touch activation. Being gateway-less and bridgeless, the system can provide customers a true plug-and-play experience, according to Liu. Because of its open platform, the system can seamlessly integrate different sensors, cameras, (Z-Wave, ZigBee, 4G-LTE, Wi-Fi compatible) smart devices for mobile, pushing audio and video streams from different locations to different designated tiers of users at once, instead of just sending simple data alerts.

scalable foR MultiPle busiNess VeRticals Even though Worldwide Alarm is primarily focused on add-on videoverification services for the alarm industry, its system can actually meet the requirements for different verticals and applications because of its scalable features. One example is its add-on service for SMB access control. Being a video alarm expert, Worldwide Alarm can add value to an access control system. Upon pressing of the doorbell button by a visitor, a video notification is sent to the customer’s phone, who can proceed to directly open the door remotely via a Wi-Fi opener, which is controlled by the Worldwide Alarm App. The system will automatically start a video recording once the person goes through the door and enters the premises. Another example is using the system in a hospital. Customers can easily add a camera and a panic button or intercom to their system, foregoing complicated installations. The nurses can then immediately see and talk to the patients through their phones. Next, by partnering with more system providers and channel players, Worldwide Alarm will also focus on factory automation and other applications to look for more opportunities.

bRiNgiNg iot to Physical secuRity Although Worldwide Alarm is comparatively new to the security industry, it intends to use its IoT concept to transform the physical security industry, but the company isn’t just confining itself to the security industry. Liu is confident that the platform that Worldwide Alarm offers will be ideal and highly beneficial for any customer or company that would like to leverage smart solutions to efficiently manage their business operations or daily lives.

Highlights of Secutech International 2017 Exhibitors Companies demonstrate the advancement of security technologies and how they adopt the IoT trends by the a&s Editorial Team

Once again, Secutech brought many innovative developers showcasing the latest in security and automation. Analytics is becoming a new trend in the surveillance industry and quite a few exhibitors emphasized the importance of using big data and cloud to utilize the technology. Biometrics also received its fair share of attention from simple finger scanner to iris recognition. Various forms of security and automation were on display and the a&s reporters had the privilege to interview many of the representatives.

19

Streamlining Surveillance With Analytics and Cloud This year at Secutech, quite a few companies presented their own unique video surveillance and analytics solutions. Many of which utilize the growing trend of cloud technology to enhance solutions.

N

VIDIA demonstrated its Tesla GPU accelerator for servers and Jetson platform which is more for edge devices. Tesla-enabled servers can be used on-site or in cloud solutions; as an example for the latter, video taken by multiple cameras can be transmitted to the server in the cloud where complex deep learning algorithms are hosted, allowing the system to detect various objects or situations based on what it’s trained to do. Applications can be manifold. “In safe city, instead of sitting in front of the monitors all the time, you can let the system identify suspicious individuals or vehicles and track them accordingly. In retail you can be informed of most frequented areas and make related adjustments accordingly,” said Ian Chen, Senior Sales Manager at NVIDIA, adding prospects for the Asian markets are quite good. There are a lot of VMS systems out in the market, but not all would allow users to quickly search and find specific videos. IronYun showcased an artificial intelligence video search solution based on a cloud and big data video operating platform at the show. According to Troy Wu, Sales Manager for IronYun, its program utilizes deep learning algorithms to allow users to not only search for specific videos using keywords via an intelligent video search engine, they can also further analyze the video, as their program incorporates facial recognition, license plate recognition, virtual fencing, vehicle routing, among others. Qognify also showcased its search engine, focused on finding suspects through recorded data. If a particular suspect is being searched on a recorded footage, there

may be 10 to 30 hours of video that needs to be watched. With the suspect search engine, the searched task can be reduced to minutes. “Using big data of videos that had been recorded, we can put into good use by asking the system to help me to find where this suspected person touch points were within vicinity so we can trace his movements and understand what he has done,” said Sunny Kong, Sales Director at Qognify. By having the knowledge of the locations the suspect has appeared in the command center could dispatch law enforcement to each place to increase the chance of catching the suspect. Cloud technology has become an important feature for connecting video surveillance. Network Optix presented its cloud connect technology that is ideal in particular multisite environments, where the setup of a video system can be a complex process. What Network Optix’s solution does is take the complexity out of the picture. “We make things much easier for the integrators and users. For users, say a storeowner with thousands of stores, they can monitor any single location from anywhere with any device, all through their cloud account with us,” said Benny Chen, APAC BD Manager at Network Optix. Another feature that sets Network Optix apart is its effective use of the hive architecture, which is a more cost-effective way to ensure redundancy. “For example in a 10-server system, if one of the server fails, the camera on this server will be automatically forwarded across the rest of the nine servers to continue the recording,” Chen said. “You don’t need to have one extra server on

Security Buyers’ Behavior Evolves With Technology and Pricing

etail, today, is all about the experience. Gone are the days when a customer walked into a store only for the sake of buying a product. Today’s customers are looking for the experience of buying a product as much as the product itself. To this end, the latest technology has helped retailers provide an enhanced experience to customers. Making this possible is the all-pervasive Internet of Things (IoT). According to MarketsandMarkets, the global IoT in the retail market is expected to grow from US$14,280 million in 2015 to $35,640 million by 2020, at a CAGR of 20 percent. “IoT in retail is majorly used to manage inventory, track theft and loss, mobile payments, shopper intelligence, and advertising and marketing inventory,” the research firm said. “The demand for this market is driven by internet ubiquity worldwide and the declining cost of IoT components such as sensors and RFID. Cloud platform is another factor which is considered as an important driver to the IoT market.” The entry of IoT into retail has given rise to the concept of smart retail. In a very basic definition, smart retail refers to the use of new technology and solutions to enhance the customer experience. Employing various types of sensors and the data they collect, smart retail solutions aim to enhance the experience of the customer.

The Right Combination Makes Multi-Site Monitoring Easier

Video surveillance monitoring and managing of multiple sites can be a challenging task. With the right combination of key features and utilization of new technologies, security operators can make monitoring multi-site environments not only easier, but more effective and efficient as well. he size and scale of multi-site environments can vary drastically. From a few cameras spread across a few city blocks to thousands of cameras spread across a city, state, country or even oceans, managing and monitoring video surveillance data across multiple sites can be daunting. Nowadays, new technologies and increased connectivity are not only helping multi-site security managers increase security, it is also helping them

48

increase effectiveness and efficiency. By incorporating certain key features into a video surveillance system, such as remote monitoring and analytics, and by adopting a flexible and scalable solution, monitoring and managing multi-site environments have become simpler than ever.

Challenges of Building the Right system A good multi-site system allows users to record video locally or centrally and

share it across the organization, explained Laurent Villeneuve, Product Marketing Manager at Genetec. “It should be built to scale, allowing you to connect to hundreds or thousands of cameras within the same system without having to connect to individual or independent systems.” Using a truly unified security platform would allow operators to control cameras, monitor alarms, track access control and vehicle activity from the same user interface. “It lets you access

your video surveillance system from any location, at any time and get a common operational picture of the situation. It simplifies collaboration and sharing with public safety agencies, without sacrificing privacy,” Villeneuve said. Building the right video surveillance system for a multi-site environment, however, can be challenging. Users must consider the fact that not all sites within a multi-site system are identical — there may be variables between them, such as bandwidth availability. It is also important to address that networked systems are constantly expanding; this could be by adding new network nodes or increasing capacity or redundancy. Expansion, though, comes with challenges. “Organizations’ expansion often outpaces the security investment,” Villeneuve said. As a result, “They are often stuck with systems that cannot support multi-site operations.” Jammy DeSousa, Senior Product Manager for American Dynamics at Tyco Security Products, addressed this by pointing out that users “should be sure that the maximum configuration has been tested by the manufacturer — number of sites, number of overall cameras, maximum bandwidth requirements, etc.”

Key featuRes foR BetteR management Challenges, however, can be overcome with the right set of system features. Although every installation is different, a good video surveillance system must be able to adapt to these differences. Adaptability means flexibility, which is key

James Somerville-Smith, Channel Marketing Lead, EMEA, Honeywell Security & Fire

in multi-site environments. “We think a good video surveillance system for multi-site monitoring should have a flexible, centralized management software platform that could remotely manage every device on all sites,” said Claudi Zhu, Product Marketing Manager at Hikvision Digital Technology. “It should also provide multiple methods for further equipment connection, namely system scalability, and provide smart event

detection and smart event search to improve surveillance operation efficiency.” Casper Wu, Product Manager at Surveon Technology, named several key features including centralized management, centralized monitoring, interactive video walls, matrix screen displays, centralized alarm management, centralized account management and high scalability for thousands of cameras and multiple clients, which he believes

Smart, Safe and Secure Storage There are several options on how and where to store video surveillance data. Choosing the right storage method will depend on the needs of each application. Multi-site environments could have several thousands of cameras on-site, and with that comes a huge amount of video data. When it comes to storage methods, many are moving to the cloud; nonetheless, the proper storage solution is critical to ensuring data security. “Video surveillance environments support much more strenuous workloads than a standard hard disk drive (HDD),” explained C.N. Chu, Sales Engineer at Seagate Technology. To address this, Seagate has been committed to providing smart, safe and secure storage solutions that are best optimized for surveillance applications. “Surveillance is more than just the sum of its parts — cameras, recorders, and storage — it is about business continuity,” Chu continued. “Customers are asking for the right approach for the best-fit storage solution that answers their needs of today and tomorrow. The business continuity aspect ultimately resides with a secure, highly available storage system that has the ability to scale with their needs without sacrificing convenience and ease-of-use. Delivering best in-class storage system is the cornerstone of many business critical applications that will help meet customers’ surveillance needs.” Laurent Villeneuve, Product Marketing Manager at Genetec, pointed out that multi-site security environments require fast, accessible storage with plenty of short-term accessibility and long-term “deep storage” for investigations. “Security professionals can choose an all on-premises storage systems, administered by a full-time IT technician, or a hybrid-cloud model with immediate and short-term storage on-premises, with older video content archived in the cloud, securely for five years or more.” He further explained how some companies are moving to an all-cloud services and storage model, for maximum flexibility, mobility and freedom from on-premises storage served from very far and remote locations. In the end, choosing the right storage method will vary by application, need and budget. 49

Preventing Hard Drive Failures

Hard drive failures will render even the most sophisticated surveillance system useless. Without a working HDD, it is impossible to store and then retrieve the video footage. BY the a&s Editorial Team

However, this is not the case. projects. In this case, a basic surveillance drive will do the job,” “In the early days of switching from tape drives to hard drives, explained Chu. the perception of the HDD was the same. We did a study to In higher-end deployments, for example, city surveillance understand the users’ pain points and realized that the problem projects in which thousands of IP surveillance cameras are was lack of IT knowledge. For example in the beginning there connected to a control center, more sophisticated solutions was no air conditioning in the rooms and as a result the HDD are needed to support the high number of concurrent video would fail a lot. 10 years ago, through market education and streams. According to Chu, hard drives are often blamed for surveillance However, despite over 10 years of market education, there are system failures. “The cause of these failures can sometimes be still many aspects of HDD maintenance and handling which are traced to the power supply. Computer power is not the same not widely known. in every system and sometimes the power supply unit that “One size doesn’t fit all in surveillance storage. Every surveilcomes with the DVR is too weak to support three or more HDDs. lance solution requires different architecture and surveillance I personally recommend using power supplies of three Ampere recording requirements,” said Chu. To minimize these risks, clients to make sure that the HDDs get enough power to run properly. should thoroughly think about the system requirements they Some entry level DVRs support 2A power which isn’t enough for need. How often will cameras be running and recording? How three-disc capacities. But it’s hard for consumers to identify the reason.” “In addition, it is also important to do preventive maintenance of the DVR at least once a year. Opening it and brushing away any dust that has built up inside will also help the system run smoother and decrease the chance of failure due to dust affecting static electricity and oxidization,” added Chu. Sometimes, it isn’t the drive that is the cause of failure, “cheap entry level DVRs/NVRs with an arm-based SOC can’t handle high frame rates, causing failure in recording or loss of frames, or sometimes the camera capacity can’t support high frame rates. All these may lead to dropped frames,” said Chu.

availability, high scalability enterprise level IP surveillance storage solutions. A typical project has hundreds to thousands of cameras and high storage requirements.” Some examples of projects that the company has carried out includes Abu Dhabi’s Central market which entailed 2,200 cameras and 3.2 petabytes of storage, and the Imam Hussein Shrine in Iraq which has 1,230 cameras and four petabytes worth of footage monitoring and recording the movement of 30 million visitors annually. Rasilient sought to design a recording server combined with a storage system that could support up to 1,000 cameras and over one petabyte of storage. “We wanted the NFD Systems to be the basic building block of large projects, for example we recently had a project in Qatar with over 2,600 cameras and eight petabytes of storage which used several of these systems,” explained Wan. Rasilient’s solution was designed with video surveillance in mind. “Other storage companies are IT-based, and the storage technology employed by other vendors caters to random access, i.e., including read and write. Whereas our system is built for over 95 percent write and minimum read access,” remarked Wan. Write performance is impacted when there are large amounts of read, and ultimately this leads to video loss. “One of our goals is to reduce video loss and ultimately achieve no frame drop. This is important to mission critical projects. Many companies can’t afford to have video loss because it can have grave consequences or very expensive consequences,” said Wan. One of the initial problems Rasilient faced was the lack of dedicated surveillance drives in the market. “When we first started years ago, only desktop drives were available and even with our patented technology, which allows drives to heal themselves, we still had issues with disk failure. When surveillance drives came out, we were very happy that the

54

industry was listening to our needs and realized the importance of dedicated drives for 24/7 recording, something a desktop drive just was not designed to do,” he said. Rasilient chose the Seagate Technology's SkyHawk drive to be implemented in their systems. “ The biggest reason we chose Seagate was the reliability and support we were getting during the qualification process,” explained Wan. “It allowed us to lower the total cost of ownership and achieve great performance in large scale deployments. After switching to Seagate we have lower disk failure rates and we also achieved a remarkable NFD (no frame drop) during our solution partner certification with Milestone System’s Xprotect VMS,” Wan

added. Under the Milestone certification criteria, a frame drop rate of under 0.1 percent is acceptable. Rasilient’s achievement was even more remarkable: “We had 1,000 2-MP simulated cameras streaming for 72 hours at 25 FPS at HD quality,” said Wan. “To make the test even harder and stress test the system even more, we increased the recording bandwidth to 2.1 GB/s. In the meantime, we simulated a disk failure by pulling out a drive out of a live system, and again no frame was dropped. SkyHawk is definitely a contributing factor to this success,” he concluded.
