Fire emergencies are almost always chaotic situations without adequate and fast responses. Users can only benefit from a fire safety system if it catches the fire at the earliest stage, buying them enough time to extinguish the fire or evacuate calmly. For such successful early detections, the control panel is bestowed with the key responsibility as the communication center for demanding actions. However, for locations difficult to implement a full fire system, users can rely on surveillance cameras as watchdogs that alert them at once in case of suspicious smoke and flames.

Partner Selection to Meet Local Needs As HID Global widens its product lines through acquisitions, it also deepens its partner relationships with system integrators (SIs) in local markets to provide customerfocused design, installation, integration, and maintenance services of physical access solutions. “We have structured partner program with requirements and benefits that increase with partner revenue contributions, marketing commitments and technical expertise,” said Siew. “Providing solutions that meet local or specific industry needs is the key to earn trust and satisfaction from our customers,” added Siew. For example, Chinese banking industry requires high secure identity solutions that enable biometrics authentication, multi-men rules, anti-passback, system integration with surveillance cameras and alarm, and so on. “We work with partners to understand their specific requirements and configure the system to fit their needs. Since our solution is open and standard-
based platform that is not tied to proprietary software and protocol, it offers flexibility to users for enhancements and modifications.” HID Global’s secure identity solutions can work seamlessly with partners’ platform to extend the use of end users’ credentials for multi-applications including logical access, time & attendance, biometrics, and carpark management to solve enterprise’s evolving business needs.
Empowering Channels Siew further pointed out, “We empower our channels to deliver our products to the market. We have several channel levels including OEM, VAR, integrator/dealer and distribution. We have a full solution launch that supports this go-to-market model, through our existing channels. They own the customer relationship and HID Global supports them with the products, solutions and professional trainings that meet their customer needs.” For example, SIs buy products from HID Global and integrate them in end-user solutions. This
could be for access control or IT security, or a combination of both. Distributors/resellers tend to work with smaller integrators or installers, predominantly in the physical access control area and for secure card issuance distribution.
HID Global in Asia Asia is a vast geographic market that the needs vary from place to place. For mature markets like Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong, they are very likely to have security systems installed already. However, since these markets have introduced more regulatory requirements and need higher level of protection, they will review and upgrade their current systems. On the other hand, growing markets like China, India, and Indonesia are implementing numbers of infrastructure projects, and thus, they tend to have new installations. HID Global has established the APAC headquarters in Hong Kong with presence in major Asian countries such as Australia, China, ASEAN, India, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, providing local support and professional advice on both new installations and migration projects.
Enhancing Customer Experience “We deliver even greater simplicity in helping customers create, use, and manage secure identity, in a world where security threats continue to grow and privacy assurances are increasingly critical,“ said Siew. Open standards foster the availability to combine interoperable products, and enable users to easily upgrad for changes in technology and applications. HID Global’s iCLASS SE platform solutions are interoperable with a growing range of products including commercial and residential locks, as well as future access control products that use NFC-enabled smartphones and other devices. The iCLASS SE platform also includes the award-winning iCLASS Seos credentials, solving the twin problems of ensuring identity security across a wide range of interoperable products in a world of growing threats, while also making credentials portable to new mobile platforms that deliver a more convenient and “frictionless” user experience across a range of applications including access control, automatic fare collection, transit, and other payment applications.
Ahead and Beyond Protecting employees and assets remains of utmost importance for organizations of all sizes, worldwide, as the threat landscape continues to evolve and attack patterns grow in sophistication. HID Global continues to see growth throughout access control business in major markets including financial, healthcare, enterprise/SMB, government, and education sectors. There are a number of market-specific growth factors that impact HID Global’s business. One of the key developments is the convergence of physical and logical access to create more capable, unified identity platforms. An acceleration of contactless smartcards technology and IP-based access control solutions for increased functionality and application convergence is also observed. Finally, there is a growing demand for interoperable migration solutions and higher security to protect customers' technology investments. Each of these trends is driving significant new innovations in coming future as HID Global strives to solve difficult customer problems, while differentiating HID Global’s capabilities within an increasingly standards-based market environment.

Biometrics & Access Control Market Have Immense Potential in India Biometrics in India is gradually gaining ground and pushing out conventional methods of identification and security checking like being physically frisked, photo IDs, tokens and passwords. This emerging technology is growing fast as it is being rapidly adopted not only in the private sector but in various government projects as well.

ack of data protection, terrorist threats, population growth, increased productivity, and technological advances associated with the upcoming government projects rising demand for biometric systems in India. According to a TechSci Research report, India's biometric market revenue is expected to reach US$2 billion in 2018. Biometrics market growth can be attributed to the growing demand for security sector, as well as the increase in applications for government projects. “India’s upcoming biometric projects such as e-passports, biometric pan cards, driving license, smart cards for BPL (Below Poverty Line) families (includes conversion of the old ration card to biometric ration cards) and much more. These biometric systems include technologies such as fingerprint scanners, iris scanners, facial and hand recognition with fingerprint scanners.” said Karan Cheech, Research Director, TechSci Research.

APR 2014
Driving Factors The most prominent biometric implementation in India, both in volume and value terms, is the national e-ID project. Technology acceptance and ease of usage are favoring the market adoption for biometrics. After a major scam in pension distribution, the government is now distributing biometic cards for the pension holders in every state. This scheme will provide good business opportunity as all districts, taluks and villages will be covered under this scheme.
India’s e-ID program “Considering the importance of iris recognition to the UID Aadhaar project and the high cost of iris scanners available from a few international manufacturers, we decided to develop our own iris scanner.
We will soon send it for certification prior to its use in various government projects. Hence, biometric devices can sell well here,” said Pradeep Bhatia, managing director, BioEnable. India’s ambitious Aadhaar program, governed by the Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI), aims to enroll all of the country’s residents through biometrics, and to distribute 12-digit identity cards used for identification and for access to resources. An Aadhaar number (AN) is a 12-digit national identification number assigned to residents of India for lifetime. Its format is 1234-5678-9012 where the first eleven digits

are used as a sequence and the rightmost digit as an error detection check-sum. It is not a proof of citizenship. It only guarantees identity; not rights, benefits or entitlements. AN is a digital identity, instantly verifiable online at the point of service (PoS), at anytime, anywhere, in a paperless way. According to The Economic Times, more than 50% population holds Aadhaar. The Aadhaar program has already achieved critical mass by assigning 600 million AN and linking over 60 million bank accounts for direct benefit transfer for various social security benefits across many states. Half the nation (289 districts across various states) was covered under Aadhaar. The power of AN vests with its instant online validation at the point of service (PoS) with demographic and biometrics attributes at anytime from anywhere in paperless way. No other ID in India has this feature. The PoS is the service provider under license from UIDAI can verify Aadhaar identities online,

City Surveillance: New Sheriff in Town Crimes such as vandalism, burglary and theft have become everyday occurrences, and reports of violent crimes, such as kidnapping and murder, can be seen broadcasted daily on news networks. Back in the day, the law and safety of citizens were protected by patrolmen who walked the streets. However, as modern cities and societies become more complex, governments and authorities realize the need to keep an eye on the city streets has increased, and relying on manpower alone is not sufficient. By a&s Editorial
P
olitical stability is not only closely related to economic growth but also the sense of safety and security in Asia. Protest might turn into riot as political unrest into civil disorder. The cost can be devastating. Take protest in Thai for instance, according to Thawatchai Arunyik, a governor for the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the number of foreign tourists visiting the country will drop by 900,000, leading to an estimated revenue loss of US$2.6 billion over the next 6 months if the unrest carries on. Governments are seeking solutions to enhance living standards and overall safety for all. While budget might not be less an issue for major cities, it could be a big one for second- and third-tier cities among Asian nations. As a consequence, cost-effective ways are explored, and excessive planning must be done to minimize the waste of resources. One way to build within a budget is to organize a project in stages and start small. This way, expansions can be done after seeing the effectiveness of the system and when more budgets or resources become available.
More People, More Problems? In 1950, only 17 percent of the Asian population lived in urban areas. However,
4622
APR 2014
www.asmag.com
22
by 2030, it is expected that 55 percent of the population will live in urban environments, according to an UN report. Within nations of ASEAN, it is expected that by 2020, two-thirds of the entire ASEAN urban population will reside in five mega urban regions, which are Bangkok, the Kuala LumpurKlang, the Singapore Triangle, the Java, and the Manila. All these high urbanization levels in cities can boost crime rate. Therefore, projects like city surveillance or safe city become a measure to lower criminal activities.
Wider Coverage City surveillance is still a budding market for most parts of Asia, and there are still great numbers of cities have yet to implement such a system. Every country’s case is different — different needs and privacy concerns, along with political structures, can affect the uptake of city surveillance in the area. For instance, some authorities are hesitant to share data among different departments or agencies, which can complicate the planning process. It is quite difficult to view city surveillance market from a well-rounded perspective, since growth in certain countries, such as China and India, far exceeds some others. Still, exponential growth can be expected within the next couple of years. Indeed, policemen patrolling the city streets provides a valuable and effective service for the safety of the people. However, the territory they can
cover in a night is limited. City surveillance thus can act as a substitute, and wider areas can be monitored. “In terms of government bidding, there are some minimum specifications the product needs to fulfill. VIVOTEK are now on the list among numerous Asian government bidding project for our solution reliability, IT know-how, third-party support, and instant engineering support. All these factors are crucial to the success of city surveillance. It’s important not just having a camera but also a solution that is working properly, said Stacey Lien, Department Manager of International Sales Department 2 at VIVOTEK. “We are seeing great potentials in Thailand, which focus on drug prevention. The 2nd tier cities, despite smaller budget compared to major cities, are deploying cameras faster due to smaller scale and higher government efficiency.”

way, you can see what works, what doesn’t and grow from there,” added Hagai Katz, VP Marketing, Magal S3. “Requirements also change from time to time, so it’s important for the system to be scalable as you move forward.” A cost-effective method of carrying out a city surveillance project would be to install cameras in different stages. For example, a system can be started with 10 cameras or less, and can be expanded to 1,000 cameras or more without any software or hardware replacements. All that need to be added are cameras, software licenses, storage space and workstations. These expansions can be done based on increases in crime rates in a particular area of the city, or when there is an increase in the budget, according to Milestone Systems. “Extending the technology life period can also dramatically improve your ROI, and this can be achieved if you have the same technology supplier for the cameras and the management system, and if software and firmware upgrades are done simultaneously.”
Start Small and Organize in Stages There is no denying that end users are becoming more and more interested in HD technology. However, the lack of IT know-how among installers and system integrators should be put into some serious thoughts. In a project scale as big as city surveillance, “team work and mutual communication become very crucial, in order to educate SI partners and end users,” said Suwich Chitkasemsuk, MD for Digitalcom. “It’s best to start small. answered the call by outfitting many of the streets and public areas of Arvaihkeer with a strong line of security cameras perfectly fitted for the job. The camera system had to cover a very expansive area of Arvaikheer city. A bigger challenge in the project, however, was the local environmental conditions. Given the bone-chilling absolute lows and sultry highs, VIVOTEK was required to provide cameras that could function in the harshest of environments. In addition to the extreme temperature range, winds can reach speeds of above 90km/h, meaning the elements were sure to put VIVOTEK’s equipment to the test. 74 VIVOTEK network cameras were installed across two main areas: one for monitoring public activities and the other for monitoring roads and traffic. In order to withstand the harsh environment, 14 units of the most durable cameras models were installed, including the SD8362E and SD8323E outdoor PTZ models. These cameras feature IP66 rated housing and extreme weatherproof housing. In addition to being durable, the SD8362E model boasts a very high frame rate up to 60 fps while the SD8323 has a very impressive optic zoom capability of up to 36 times. The IP8362 bullet model comprised the remaining 60 cameras, being capable of producing high resolution and high quality video in low light conditions thanks to the WDR Enhancement technology, removable IR-cut filter, and built-in IR-illuminator.

esearch and Markets estimated that the global electronic access control systems (EACS) market is to reach US$16.3 billion by 2017, growing at a CAGR of 7.0% from 2012 to 2017. The EACS market, as defined in the report, is comprised of authentication systems (biometrics, card-based, touch screens and keypads, and door contacts), intruder alarms, and perimeter security systems. In terms of safeguarding the doors of a property, EACS has become a popular choice in facility management because it provides a higher level of security, as well as better integration opportunities with other subsystems such as time management and power control. Genetec’s Lynette Pon, Director of Sales, Greater China, Southeast Asia & South Asia, pointed out that the adoption rate of EACS in Asia is very high with the presence of many local players. Card-based or biometrics-based technologies are also driving this market growth. Market share of EACS versus traditional keys and locks are 70:30, especially in the government and enterprise segments. In general, there are more greenfield projects than upgrading/replacement projects in Asia.

Cloud Access Control — Soon in Asia? BY ARIEL CHAO
While the crux of access control remains to be security and safety, solution providers are beginning to realize that human mentality does not simply associate safety with actual physical barriers anymore — more sense of safety is generated by real-time control on mobile devices anywhere, anytime. Cloud computing can certainly free access control from the physical constraints, but is Asia ready for it?
T
he human mentality associates safety with barriers that successfully separate danger from its surroundings. With today’s technology, such barriers can be monitored through smart devices in users’ palms; users’ sense of safety is being enhanced with the sense of being in control, hence pushing access control to the cloud. As a result, the new structure is web-based instead of the physical local client / host set up. According to Cloud Security and Privacy: An Enterprise Perspective on Risks and Compliance, cloud computing has five attributes: multi-tenancy, massive scalability, elasticity, pay as you go, and self-provisioning. By that definition, cloud access control is a future-proof system that is flexible enough to host a multitude of field devices, as well as follows the provisions determined by the users, all for a simple fee. Such a fee does not mean the fee for hardware or software; in fact, it is the service
Although there is a trend of using cloud technology, it will still need a while for more people to accept it. Brad Choi, Senior Sales Manager, Suprema

During Secutech 2014, Taiwanese fire safety providers reiterated the importance to implement solutions that fit the different purposes of the buildings, and the future trend of wireless communication and video image detection (VID) technology. Here are some of the suggestions and trends offered. BY ARIEL CHAO
Did you know: • Research and Markets estimates that global fire safety market is to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.9% from 2013 to 2018, reaching a total of US$ 66.6 billion. • Frost & Sullivan expects that Southeast Asia’s fire safety market would generate revenue over $548.3 million in 2017. Some contributors include the recovery of the construction industry post-recession and the amendments to building codes and fire safety rules. • Southeast Asia has a high acceptance for wireless and fire cloud system, but the market is still relatively niche.
