This year, I had the opportunity to visit several Asian manufacturers, especially ones in Taiwan and Korea. Unlike the booming security industry in China, most of the manufacturers based in Taiwan, Korea, including Japan, are still fighting for survival. To reduce manufacturing costs, they are increasing collaboration and partnerships, and many are even starting to source more products from China. Some of them are turning to new applications, which require high-resolution video or advanced video streaming technologies. In-vehicle mobile video-based solutions and smart home solutions are examples of what these companies are looking for. In addition, some are also looking at IoT-related applications, such as smart cities and smart factories, for which they provide video-based management systems to create a central monitoring system. By leveraging their strong foundation in the security business, these companies aim to explore other niche markets (with less competition) and provide extra value. The domestic market in Korea, in particular, not only supports the development of brand new businesses, but also provides local companies with good opportunities to expand their business. Due to local government support and strong economy, more and more companies have begun to switch their focus from the international market to their domestic one. In this issue, we have also included the latest Security 50 report which covers the latest global industry trends and analysis.

The catchphrase “Malaysia, Truly Asia” had been effective in promoting the country as a multiethnic destination. But in terms of security, the country can be said of as “truly resilient.” Indeed, amid the “race-to-the-bottom” trend in the country, security players are transforming themselves into value-added solutions providers to survive and achieve sustainable growth.

Even though the industry is still marked by fierce price competition, there is growing realization of the potential costs of skimping on cybersecurity. To minimize vulnerabilities and prevent cyberattacks, companies are now more willing to invest in their systems and implement measures that can harden security for both front-end and backend devices.

Gunshot Detectors Increase Awareness and Response Time

R

ecent news of shooting incidents have raised concerns about gun safety and the need for increased safety and security. Giving law enforcement agencies the tools to quickly detect and respond to gunfire incidents is an important part of reducing casualties for these types of events. Many developers have created technologies that not only detect gunshots but give accurate information such as the location of the sound and the type of guns being used.

Shooter Detection System Guardian Indoor Active Shooter Detection System

The Guardian Indoor Active Shooter Detection System incorporates the world’s finest acoustic gunshot identification software and combines it with infrared gunfire flash detection to produce a high performing, fully automatic and accurate gunshot detection technology. The system’s dual modality provides the highest rate of detection while bringing the number of false alerts to zero. Guardian simultaneously detects gunfire and immediately relays this information via floor plan map with shot location, text, e-mail and other notification pathways to key personnel and building occupants, with no human interpretation required. With security systems integration, the Guardian System calls up surveillance cameras in the incident area, initiates lock-down procedures, sends mass notification alerts to desktops and mobile devices, and provides immediate notification to first responders.

a&s talks to Pierre Racz, President and CEO of Genetec, about the market, upcoming trends and Genetec’s strategies to stay ahead in a vastly changing industry.

a&s: How has Genetec evolved alongside the industry over the past few years? Racz: In 1997, when Genetec was founded, we created an internet protocol (IP) architecture based on off-theshelf network hardware, video compression, and camera equipment to create Genetec Omnicast 1.0, one of the first IP-based, point-to-multipoint, video management systems (VMS) in the world. Our technological intuition, our entrepreneurial passion and educated guess about IP turned out to be correct. When world circumstances forced the security industry to build complex security systems, going IP turned out to be easier to build, and provided more flexibility in the digital networking (point-to-multipoint) realm, than in the analog/ telecom (point-to-point) realm. After the events of 9/11, organizations around the world wanted to have multiple control rooms; one for operations, and at least one other as a backup to guard against natural and unnatural disasters. To do this with analog technology was prohibitively expensive or topologically impossible. Digital (IP) technology made addressing these new complex architectures possible, compelling customers to adopt IP digital video technology over analog. Today, Genetec is in its 20th year as an innovative team, and has grown from creating IP video management systems, to engineering the most scalable, open-architecture, unified IP physical security platforms in the world. We went from offering an initial IP system that could manage 100s of cameras (in 2000) to a system that can scale to manage millions of cameras (in 2007) — all built on the foundation of open architecture, packet switching protocols (IP), and anticipating that the unification semantics would overtake naïve integration semantics. We’ve also grown from 10 employees to 1,000, working in dozens of office locations around the globe.

a&s: How is Genetec planning to maintain this growth in 2018? Racz: In 2018 — Genetec will continue to pursue its strategy to offer a continuous flow of clever innovations. Some of these will be evolutionary improvements to our technology, and others will be created to automate security processes that were not previously imagined nor easy to automate. We are democratizing technology, which in the past was only accessible and affordable to bigger organizations. Our desire to engineer reliable and highly available systems had led us to design for system failures that have either accidental or deliberate and malicious root causes. Software

today is like an organism with a weak immune system. We do not think we can rid the environment of parasites; we just have to become more resilient to their attacks.

a&s: What industry trends do you see taking shape in 2018? Racz: Security trends and topics Genetec will address in the security industry will be:

Combining Structured and Unstructured Data Structured data contains information that enables the easy separation of a complex stream of information into its constituent component, and enables complex automated decision making. For example, in a long undelimited string of data coming from a retail point of sale system, without structure tags, it is not possible to know if the characters “20” represent the item quantity, the purchase price, the sales tax or the line number. Video is the ultimate unstructured information stream that contains a wealth of information that is hard to get at mechanically. Combining structured and unstructured information opens up new dimensions of insight. Early in our 20-year history we realized that simply recording video was not enough. We had to index the video with structured information coming from a vast ecosystem of sensors: number plate readers, access control events, sorting machines (baggage and package), point of sales, weather and seismological, etc. We did not know that that sensor ecosystem would be called the Internet of Things (IoT). Now in 2018, Genetec is offering many new applications and features that will further enable our users to make more sense out of the data gathered from cameras and sensors to create operational insights to help retailers and enterprise customers acquire analytical intelligence from their environments. For example, our users can view heat-map extracts (directly from the video) to better understand people movements and customer flow trends. Combined with cash register sales data, these two pieces of information can generate valuable, insightful analysis of conversion rates from outside store foot traffic, to browsing customers and conversion rate of browsing customers to purchasing customers. Even further, different stores can be compared for different times of the day, days of the week, seasonal trends, unusual events and even how weather affects customer patterns.

Malaysia Security

to New Heights

Compared to other Asian markets like the Philippines, Malaysia’s security industry has reached a certain level of maturity. Commoditization, coupled with end users’ price sensitivity, has made it all the more difficult for vendors and their partners to survive on hardware products alone. Therefore, they are more and more moving towards smart and integrated solutions to differentiate and satisfy users’ security and non-security needs. BY William Pao

n terms of economic growth, Malaysia’s GDP is expected to rise more moderately compared to other Asian economies. The World Bank, for example, forecasts that the country’s GDP will grow 4.9 percent this year, compared to 7 percent for Laos, 6.9 percent for both the Philippines and Cambodia, and 6.3 percent for Vietnam. Meanwhile, Malaysia vendors and distributors’ assessment of their own

16

performance ranges from cautious optimism to outright bullishness, citing growth is expected to be single- to double-digit. “Unlike Vietnam or the Philippines, we’ve already past the booming stage. It’s just that we’re keeping our own pace while seeking steady growth. It’s not a big-margin growth, but at least it’s not moving downward,” said Brian Lee, Regional Business Development Manager at MicroEngine Technology, a manufacturer of access control products. “I believe we already hit rock bottom a couple of years back, and now we are on the rise,” said Yap Tuck Khong, Senior Manager at Alarm and Automation, a distributor carrying such brands as Nemtek, SUPA and iCatch. “It’s not so rapid, not as fast as we want it to be. It will take time before we hit the golden peak again.” “It’s difficult to maintain growth, due to the overall economic conditions in Malaysia.

Especially, this year there’s been a currency depreciation, which brings up import cost. Competition is fierce as well,” said Bryan Liew, MD of Dotcom Engineering, a distributor of Hanwha Techwin products. “We estimate we’ll have a 10 percent growth this year, pretty much the same as last year.”

Security Concerns Drive Demand According to Malaysia’s security players, concerns over crime and acts of terrorism are still a main driver for investment in security. “I think people are getting more and more concerned about security. When people have a more stable life, they would think more about security,” said Chee Kok Man, MD of IndelFe, a distributor of GIGABYTE-branded products. “Security is already the main concern for customers. It has become more and more important,” said Lee Yew Hoong, System Consultant at ELID, a manufacturer of access control products. “So far, this industry has been growing for the past 10 years. Only because Malaysia is slowing down did security get a bit affected. But overall it’s still growing.”

John Davies, MD, TDSi

Government Spending Government projects still account for a main source of income for security players. Among the different types of infrastructure projects, metro is now gaining traction. Of note, the MY Rapid Transit (MRT ) is a proposed three-line Mass Rapid Transit system linking Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley. According to the web portal KL City Guide, the first line of this project is the Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line (SBK Line), which is expected to be completed by 2017. According to the security companies, metro and other government projects

such as the series of suicide bombings outside the Stade de France in Paris, France, in November 2015 and the car bombing outside the Vodaphone Arena in Istanbul, Turkey, in December 2016 — have only stressed the need for better stadium security. However, terrorist threats and other attacks are, unfortunately, difficult to predict, making the unknown one of the biggest challenges in stadium security.

“In discussions with some directors of security at large public stadiums, the one thing that keeps them up at night is trying to prepare for the unknown,” said Hank Monaco, VP of Marketing for Building Technologies and Solutions at Johnson Controls. “In today’s world, unfortunately you have to try and prepare your team (stadium operations and security staff ) for the unknown, trying to challenge your

T

he Internet of Things (IoT ) has been a catalyst for new technologies. In fact, increasing adoption of IoT is one of the major drivers for smart stadium growth globally. According to a report by MarketsandMarkets, the global smart stadium market is expected to increase from US$4.6 billion in 2016 to $17.3 billion by 2021, at a CAGR of 30.2 percent during the forecast period. Regionally, Europe is leading the smart

28

stadium market in terms of market share. Growth in the smart stadium market is being attributed to factors such as a rising focus on enhancing fan engagement and offering an unforgettable customer experience, the report stated. In order to reach such goals, however, there is a need for smart technologies. Additionally, an increasing frequency of upcoming sport events across the globe and government initiatives for smart building projects are also driving market growth. Keeping stadiums safe, however, is a challenge. Despite the efforts of even the best traditional security technology, in today’s world, it’s just not enough. Although no technology can predict or prevent an outside attack from happening, stadiums can now use new technologies alongside traditional ones to maximize their efficiency when responding to such events.

team are selecting a single point of responsibility for technologies early in the process.” The Johnson Controls process of technology contracting involves assigning a single point of responsibility upfront to bring an enterprisewide perspective to managing the planning, design, installation, integration, commissioning and service of technology systems, business applications and supporting infrastructure. “Technology contracting can save time, reduce risk and decrease construction and operating costs while ensuring that technology is deployed and integrated in an orderly manner to achieve desired outcomes,” Monaco said.

Looking for Faces in a Crowd

Maximizing Technologies More important than a single technology to address security concerns is implementing a process to address the holistic technology needs and desired outcomes for the stadium as early as possible, inclusive of security requirements, according to Hank Monaco, VP of Marketing for Building Technologies and Solutions at Johnson Controls. “Constructing a smart stadium that meets energy, technology, security and operational objectives depends on early collaboration between the owner, design and construction teams, sharing informed, data-driven decisions about connectivity, security and interoperability,” Monaco explained. “With deliberate expert attention applied early during the planning phase, pitfalls can be avoided and the security needs of the stadium can be met. This is why, increasingly, stadium owners and their

With up to 100,000 people crammed together in one space, the deployment of effective crowd management technology could be crucial to identifying unwanted persons. In fact, according to a report by KBV Research, the global crowd analytics market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 25.9 percent from 2016 to 2022, and is forecast to reach a market size of $1.5 billion by 2022. “This technology informs users on how large venue crowds may react when an incident occurs which requires emergency evacuation or sheltering in place,” explained Jeffery Miller, SVP of MSA Security. “This information can greatly aid event planners and security personnel in understanding where to deploy staff and how to communicate effectively in an emergency.” Herta Security’s crowd management software detects multiple faces in real time over multiple video surveillance cameras and is very tolerant to changes in illumination, pose and partial face occlusions, which are the main factors involved in a crowded stadium environment. The software, according to Laura Blanc, International Marketing Executive at Herta Security, is optimized for GPU architectures, works many times faster than traditional systems (up to 600 fps), and works with very high-resolution IP cameras and video streams. The technology is fully automatic and non-invasive and works properly on changes of facial expression, illumination, beard, eyeglasses, scarves and caps.

Traffic Management Heats Up With Thermal Imaging The need for more efficient and effective traffic management systems is increasing as urbanization and population growth continue. hen used in conjunction with other sensors in a comprehensive traffic management system, thermal imaging sensors, such as thermal cameras, have a lot to offer in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Although thermal imaging has a long history in military applications and in perimeter detection for physical security, and its use in traffic management is not yet ubiquitous, the use of thermal sensors across verticals is growing rapidly. A report from MarketsandMarkets estimates the global thermal imaging market will grow from US$7.7 billion in 2016 to $10.3 billion by 2021, at a CAGR of 5.9 percent. Growth is attributed to the rising demand of thermal cameras as a result of declining prices. Furthermore, growth is also being credited to the increasing need of thermal cameras in all commercial applications, including transportation. In fact, the use of thermal imaging in the automotive application segment is

34

expected to gain traction in the next five years, according to the report. “The increasing use of thermal cameras in the automotive sector to reduce the risks in driving, especially during the night, is one of the major reasons for the growth of thermal imaging market in this application,” stated MarketsandMarkets. While applying thermal imaging directly to automotive use isn’t the same as using it for traffic management, the need for it in the transportation sector can be inferred. Additionally, with the need for traffic management growing, combining different technologies, including thermal imaging, will only help create more effective solutions.

Why Use Thermal One of the biggest draws of thermal imaging cameras across sectors is their ability to “see” in the dark and inclement weather. They can also measure the temperature of any object in their field of view, allowing them to detect fires at an early stage over the full detection range. “This unlike other fire detection technologies

requires no contact with flames or heated gasses, nor is any smoke propagation needed for the camera to detect excessive heat generated by fire or another vehicle malfunction,” explained Michael Deruytter, Director of Innovation at FLIR Intelligent Transportation Systems. “An additional benefit of thermal imaging is that this technology enables operators to see through smoke. This can be a life-saving feature in smokefilled tunnels and can provide

valuable information to firefighting teams about the possible location of people.” Deruytter further explained that because thermal imaging cameras do not make use of visible light, but rely on thermal radiation or heat given off by everything in their field of view, they do not get confused by sun glare, darkness, headlights, shadows, wet streets, snow or fog. This makes them an ideal component of a 24/7 trafficmonitoring solution.

Thermal and Traffic Analytics Thermal imaging on its own is not a complete solution for traffic management. However, when applied with video analytics, thermal imaging cameras can be very beneficial. “Thermal cameras produce images similar to the standards rendered by visible cameras, especially in terms of the shape of the object. This means that video analytics developed for visible cameras to conduct shape recognition, motion detection, intrusion detection, people counting, etc., can also be applied to thermal image cameras,” said Emmanuel Bercier, Strategic Marketing Manager at ULIS, a France-

based manufacturer of thermal imaging sensors. “Moreover, since thermal cameras detect heat from objects, objects are highly distinguishable from their surroundings. As a consequence, this will simplify existing video analytics as it eliminates the need to take light variations or shadow effects into account,” Bercier continued. Deruytter pointed out that thermal imaging cameras are well suited for video analytics use since the pixels in the image represent heat information — the hotter an object, the more thermal energy is being radiated; however, even extremely cold objects, up to negative 243°C

(zero Kelvin), radiate thermal energy. “Thermal cameras can detect the heat given off by cars, cyclists and pedestrians. This detection information can be used to classify the object or road user and make smart decisions for intersection control in seconds,” Deruytter said. “Intelligent thermal cameras are also used to detect incidents, such as stopped vehicles or wrong-way drivers, which, in turn, speeds up intervention by traffic authorities and emergency services.”
