Welcome to a&s smahome We are pleased to present a&s's 14th magazine. This brand new periodical is released in part to respond to the dramatically rising worldwide demand for smart home solutions. The 2014 International CES was not the first event at which home automation was hyped, but this time the hype seemed better founded. For our first issue, we've uncovered at CES a variety of exciting, connected devices, including gateways, video cameras, sensors and more. To find out more, feel free to jump straight to page 34. Coming from a background in professional physical and electronic security, we have in recent years observed first-hand the line blur between home security and home automation. In fact, we’ve even noticed the slow death of “home automation” as a buzzword; instead, “smart home” and “connected home” have taken its place. “Connection” is at the heart of a&s SMAhome and mySMAhome.com. By providing comprehensive coverage of smart home technologies, products and markets, we aim to be the premier international sourcing guide for engineers, researchers, procurement professionals. Always holding true to this goal, our content will focus on four central themes: • Who’s who in the industry—Connecting you with quality manufactures and buyers • The latest technologies—Informing you of new tools with which you can innovate • New gadgets—Giving you a quick glance of where the industry may be heading • New business models—Pointing you to where new opportunities may emerge

Audio alert can also be done with just one-click to trigger instant audio warning sound on the camera. As for the storage media, local and cloud storages are available. The microSD card is the most common choice for local storage. The C4Home smart phone APP supports DropBox to store important snapshots immediately after events happened. The usage of C4Homesupported NAS devices like Synology’s is an affordable alternative.

Editor Comment: Compro enhanced its role in smart home. Instead of merely offering home cameras, its software design capabilities have given solutions to users’ skepticism on remote controlling and false alarm. By checking snapshot images on the cloud storage, users are not only connected with homes, but also assured their home situations.

GKB Security Corporation www.gkbsecurity.com email: sales@gkbsecurity.com Smart home market has a rosy outlook in coming years. In the past, those smart home systems were found in luxury residences, and commercial buildings. Nowadays, users can see them anywhere from basic home remote control to smart home surveillance. For instance, users can turn on and off control A/C and lights just with a mobile phone app.

The lAunch of AeTherlink PlATforM GKB Security Corporation (GKB) launched a home automation solution platform called AetherLink. The platform is a cloud-based platform that is designed to achieve easiest-ever integration of all network devices. cover story

Unlike most entrepreneurs in Taiwan’s riskphobic security industry, Nally Chang is a daring CEO. Her experience in the USA Trading Center as an interpreter fostered her business acumen, while her technology-savvy background allowed her to see opportunities in various industries. In 1980, Taiwan-based Everspring was founded as a burglar alarm manufacturer, but has never limited itself to just being a security maker. Fastforward 30 years—Chang is now leading the 1000-employee enterprise in a transition, which began in 2011, toward becoming a total solution provider for the smart home. “We started in 1980 by making sensors and alarm systems, later expanding to lighting and video surveillance. In 2001, Everspring started to integrate disparate product lines into a home automation system, which is the foundation of our current smart home solutions,” said Chang. “Our shift from device provider to integrated system provider to smart home solution provider will contribute to this transition.” Taking a 30-year-old company and turning it in a new direction takes a lot of courage. “In 2013, we began to gradually move away from OEM and ODM services, focusing instead on becoming a service provider,” Chang continued. “We had to do it because we saw Chinese manufacturers competing aggressively in price and improving rapidly in quality; we also saw abundant opportunities in a changing market. Everspring needed to transform itself in order to continue its growth.”

integrAtion iS eSSentiAl A smart home needs three components to materialize: eyes and ears, a brain, and limbs. The eyes and ears are cameras and sensors that collect data; the brain is software that analyzes that data; the limbs are devices like door locks and lights that follow's the brain's orders to perform actions that are meaningful to end-

open up infinite applications and possibilities. “Taking advantage of this requires a significant change in mindset, but this is improving rapidly as younger generations enter the workforce,” noted Chang. During 2012 and 2013, Everspring observed and experimented extensively in the smart home market. “The time is right for bigger moves. In 2013, our smart home business accounted for 25% of our total revenue. By 2014 that will grow to at least 35%; by 2015, we think more than half of our revenue will come from smart home related businesses,“ Chang said.

SMArt HoMe MArketS users. Chang has had a front-row seat in the evolution of security and home automation. She knows that integration is the key to taking home automation to the masses. While security and IT were traditionally two different industries, they have been bridged by smartphones and apps, which have significantly simplified integration for manufacturers, software developers and consumers. Chang has seen business trends beginning to favor integration. As the borderline between security, monitoring and automation blurs, the ubiquity of smartphones and the rise of the app economy has accelerated the development of smart home solutions. According to Chang, this has allowed the company to gain a deep understanding of customer needs, while also improving its R&D department to develop products that focus on solving real-world problems for consumers. Last April, Everspring launched the secondgeneration smart home solution— U-Home2. Based on SIP structure and fiber optic network, it integrates access control, door phone, security services, lighting and other smart home functions via just one power line and one Ethernet cable. From the device maker to a smart home solution provider, one challenge of the transition is integrating individual products into an open solution. Everspring develops IP-based solutions to

The explosion of the smart home market is an unstoppable trend. This trend was evident at this year's International CES. “Prices have fallen, and market education has improved significantly,” said Chang. In the early days, the smart home concept was relatively new, and market education was a barrier toward mass adoption. It was difficult to provide a scenario that end-users can relate to. Many consumers didn't understand how different parts of the home could interact, not to mention envision the benefits of that interaction. “New business models have also proven to be effective. You don't need a hefty upfront investment or a professional installer anymore. Telcos and cable companies offer tiered services that consumers can pick and choose from--whether

they need home security, energy efficiency or home care,” Chang said. In Europe, which is Everspring’s strongest market, Chang works with telcos to expand the market; in the US market, leading market channels and brands are Everspring’s main partners. When comparing the US and European markets, Chang observed that the US smart home market is still ahead of the rest of the world by three years, exemplified by the wide availability of DIY products. In contrast, the European market is dominated by telcos, but Chang believes the European market is catching up fast. Every market is slightly different, Chang said. “The smart home market is highly dependent on customization. End-users in the U.S. and Europe have different requirements. The governments also have different regulations. Solutions and products need to be able to cater to these different needs.” When asked how Everspring caters to these various needs, Chang answered, “We not only have experience providing home security services directly to endusers, we have also learned a lot by collaborating with system integrators around the world. We have a deep understanding of international markets, which we have gained through working with partners in more than 30 countries.”

“I believe our transition to service provider will fuel our growth in the coming years. By service, I mean providing services that increase operational efficiency or open up new opportunities for vendors,” Chang said. “Take laundry machines—wouldn't it be nice if vendors could be reminded when a customer's warranty is up so they can offer additional maintenance services or extended warranties? Key StandardS for Smart HomeS Standards play a very strong role in the development and growth of technology markets. The availability of a robust ecosystem and multiple vendors across the entire ecosystem are essential to give developers confidence that they will not be at the mercy of one vendor and will have access to a competitive market for both price and product features. Standardization also creates a similar user experience with products and solutions from different vendors. In smart homes, there are about a dozen standards for signal processing and communications. a&s invites some of these standards to the SMAhome column, to share their insights and future roadmaps. KNX ASSociAtioN In its more than 20 years of existence, KNX has put large emphasis on standardization, through the elaboration of the KNX specifications and their later publication as international standard ISO/IEC 14543-3, and the possibility for end users to choose freely from a wide portfolio of certified, compatible KNX devices from different manufacturers and applications. Combined with its manufacturerindependent design and configuration tool (ETS), KNX has become a “household name in the world of home and building controls. KNX messages can be transported over a twisted-pair network, via the mains, through wired and wired IP networks or via the KNX 868 MHz RF solution; building designers, thus, have a wide range of possible media to choose from: wireless or wired. The percentage of homes and buildings, in which networked control equipment will be installed, is expected to grow in the next decades. The use of wireless technology, especially in the residential sector, is expected to rise, for which KNX will offer the forthcoming ETS5, also a design and configuration platform, for potential integrators interested in a more widespread use of RF. Using nonproprietary tablets for Home aUtomation

Up until recently, integrators and end users had no choice but to use a dedicated and often proprietary touch panel to control their home automation or control system if they desired a comprehensive control interface. Since the release of the first iPhone, iPad and Android devices, an explosion has been seen in the number of devices being sold and applications being released that allow these devices to be used as the main control interface. Submitted by Commandfusion

Can tablets or smartphones replace expensive proprietary devices and bring home automation (HA) to the masses? This feature looks at why consumer-based devices are a great replacement for proprietary devices, with a main focus on iOS devices as these are currently more commonly used in the automation industry.

AdvAntAgeS • Cost: The first and most obvious advantage is the cost of a smartphone or tablet compared to a proprietary control device. A typical dedicated touch screen could cost well more than US$2,000, while an iPad — which is of similar size and capabilities to common touch panels — will cost under $500. When Android 22 mySMAhome.com March/April 2014

devices are brought into the mix, the cost becomes even lower, and in almost all cases, functionality is not only on par, but often better than that of proprietary devices. • Availability: Complementing the cost factor is that these consumer devices are readily available from a number of different sources without the need for special accreditations or being locked into any single distributor. • Device familiarity: According to Nielsen2, almost half (49.7 percent) of all US residents now own a smartphone. These consumers will be more than likely already familiar with iOS or Android devices. If they do not already use one of these, they will have seen them advertised

and being used by others. This means that they are conditioned to the look and operation of these devices. • P r o c e s s i n g p o w e r : M o s t proprietary devices have built-in processors; however, the speed and power of these processors are severely lacking when compared with iOS and most Android devices. They also have less memory and only small amounts of storage space for GUI files. This results in special programming being required to work around the limitations of the touch panels, while an iOS device can take almost anything an integrator can throw at it. • Additional features: Tablets and smartphones have additional f e a t u re s t h a t c a n b e t a k e n advantage of in HA applications. For example, multitouch is a feature that is not widely included in proprietary devices; this is an extremely powerful feature that allows us to improve humandevice interaction through using a different number of fingers to interact with the display. • Existing infrastructure: In many circumstances, the customer will already have a wireless network set up in the house. Because devices such as the iPad utilize standard protocols such as Wi-Fi, in most cases this network can be utilized to connect the mobile devices that

will control the systems in the premises. This means there is no expensive special cabling required.

diSAdvAntAgeS • Lack of hard buttons: Proprietary devices usually have a number of physical buttons that can be programmed to carry out the most common functions such as power on, volume changes and so on, without the need to navigate through pages of GUIs. However, alternative methods of interaction can combat this by designing a GUI that utilizes gestures, sensors and the multitouch interface to allow for commonly used controls to be implemented. For example, volume up and down could be assigned to swipe up and down gestures. • Screen lock and app launching: Screen lock was also an issue on iOS devices, as before iOS 6, slide to unlock could only be disabled on a jail-broken device. With Guided Access on iOS 6, the screen lock function can be disabled, so it launches straight into the app that was open when the screen turned off. • S oftware/hardware updates: Some device manufacturers such as Apple will frequently release software and hardware updates.

• No centralized app: Once again, it is a case of moving away from the proprietary control systems Source: Gartner.April, 2012 and apps and choosing one that publishes open protocols to allow for simple control of many different systems from a single app. And if for some reason you really This would lead some to think need to switch apps, applications that therefore more service calls are available to allow programmers would be required. AlArm And fire sAfety systems for smArt home

There are 4 aspects that the smart home strives to automate: communication, electricity control, security and housekeeping. Therefore, smart homes generally utilize and integrate technologies like communication, electricity control, security, fire safety, video surveillance and more. By Alf Chang

2 of the most critical elements in a smart home are a welldesigned alarm system and fire safety system. For buyers hunting for alarm systems and fire safety systems that are intended for smart homes, Secutech recommends 5 basic features to look for: Panic buttons, centralized monitoring station, detailed event display and logging, automated notifications, and integration with other home appliances. Current smart home security systems utilize communication, sensors, automation and other technologies to fuse into a single system HVAC and home appliance control, indoor security and safety, and home management. Alarm systems that integrate with other systems in the smart home should have the following 5 features: 1. Panic button: Panic buttons are a quick and simple way to call for help in case of fires or other emergencies. When pressed, a panic button sends a signal to the home automation or building management system. It should be installed at the bedside or other easy-to-reach places. 2. Automated alert and SOS request: Intrusions can be detected by installing various types of sensors around the home. When a sensor is triggered, it sounds the alarm siren and also alerts the home automation or the building management system that assistance is required. Monitoring centers or security guards can then immediately call the 24 mySMAhome.com March/April 2014

police, resolving the situation as soon as possible. 3. Alert and event management: When a homeowner leaves the home and arms the alarm system, the system will detect intrusions and immediately alert home automation and building management systems. Monitoring centers or security guards will be notified of door number at which the event took place and also the type of alarm triggered. Records of alerts should be automatically saved in the system for future reference. 4. Automated dialing and notifications: A smart building's security system should allows users to set multiple emergency contact numbers. Different types of alarms trigger the dialing of different contact numbers. Users should also be able to set the alarm system to send notifications to a mobile phone. 5. Integration with other home appliances: When a homeowner leaves the home and arms the alarm system, the system should automatically tur n off home appliances that do not need to stay on. When a user comes back and disarms the alarm system, the system can automatically turn on some lights and take door and window sensors offline. However, indoor flammable gas and smoke detectors should always remain armed.

Home security is at the heart of the smart home concept. No home automation solution is complete without integration with the home security system.

The most critical components in fire safety systems are sensors. Sensors that are commonly used for fire safety are infrared sensors, flammable gas detectors, and smoke detectors. These sensors are the “eyes and ears of the fire safety system, which monitors the home for signs of danger. Once a potential danger is detected, the system alerts the home automation or building management system and notifies rel evan t authorities that assistance is required.

Anyone who owns a smartphone or tablet computer has the potential to carry in their pocket a doorway to their homes. By Gary Tang

The introduction of the smartphone and other mobile devices, in conjunction with advancements in wireless networks and cloudbased services, has brought new meaning to the term “mobile home.” Today, it is possible for homeowners to check on their homes regardless of where they may be, provided that an Internet connection is present. While the majority of consumers have yet to embrace the smart home concept, there is no doubt that its adoption is set for rapid growth. According to a recent report by Juniper Research, smart home revenues will reach $71 billion by 2018.

Why NoW? Various forms of home automation have existed over the past two decades, but they have been too expensive and troublesome for most homeowners. Today, however, costs are significantly lower, and the ubiquity of mobile devices and the emergence of the app economy have made it easy for consumers to interact with products and services. Alarm.com has been a part of the evolution to the smart home market, having been first-to-market with some features, said Jay Kenny, VP of Marketing at Alarm.com. “We launched our first mobile app in 2009. That really was a big game changer; the mobile app and mobile device is one of the key things that has driven really rapid adoption of the technology.” Indeed, in the following years, Alarm. com started to see rapid growth—Alarm.com is the largest connected home platform in the U.S.A. For mobile apps, cross-platform support is crucial—iOS and Android native apps, as well as web apps. “This is extremely important to reach the mass market as consumers can make devices

work together and schedule them to run at certain times without having to download additional apps for each device, said Bob Cooper, CMO at Zonoff. Zonoff is behind the technology that powers the Staples Connect platform. The big trend toward cloud services is also a factor driving adoption for consumers, since they dramatically decrease the cost of ownership, Kenny continued. In hindsight, it is only natural that consumers who are always connected will want to always have access to devices in their homes. “A lot of companies have observed that opportunity and are now getting into the market,” said Kenny said.

SeCurity At itS Core Right now, many consumers are attracted to the direct benefits of a connected device. No products bring direct benefits as security products do, making home security one of the core features of the smart home that is driving adoption. A basic home security system comprises video, sensors and 24-hour alarm monitoring. When an alarm goes off, the police will show up; when there is a fire, firefighters come to put it out. Two high-growth add-ons to those

services are video monitoring and energy management, Kenny said. Video monitoring is one of the most important components in a modern home security system. “More and more people are adding video cameras to both the outside and inside of their homes. Being able to stream real-time video to a mobile phone is really interesting to people, both from a security perspective and an awareness perspective,” Kenny said. “If you have kids, it’s nice to know that they are safe at home and are doing the right things. If you have pets, you also want to know that they are safe and are having fun. Both the awareness and security aspect of the video are really important.” Even something as simple as a smartphonecontrolled garage door opener can bring significant convenience and peace of mind to homeowners. Since 70 percent of Americans enter their home via the garage door, it is not only important to know the status of that entry point, it is also convenient to have the ability to check that status when a homeowner has driven 10 minutes away from home and worries that the door is still open, said, Bob Dahlberg, VP of Business Development at Arrayent. Arrayent’s platform powers the home appliances of numerous well-known manufacturers.

SpreAdiNg out FroM SeCurity Security is the primary service that consumers value and are willing to pay for, but Alarm.com is also seeing it drive a lot of adoption in thermostats and lighting. According to Parks Associates, nearly two thirds of US consumers are interested in buying a smart thermostat. Dahlberg agrees:

InteroperabIlIty Is essentIal for the smart applIance Industry because consumers want to have the flexIbIlIty to buy best-of-breed applIances and have them work together

>>>>>>>>>>>>> “This industry has tipped. If you are in the thermostat business and you don't have a connected thermostat strategy, you are going out of business.” As for lighting, “it is the lowest cost way to impact the home environment. LED bulbs are getting lower and lower cost every day, getting close to compact fluorescents. ZigBee vendors are quoting ZigBee SoCs at less than $1 in 2015,” Dahlberg said. “The combination of LED and connectivity means lighting control (on, off, dim) will be very easy to install.” Low cost is important because while there are vertical opportunities for all connected products, the near-term value of smart appliances is all around a collection of small conveniences; no single feature alone is compelling in its own right, Dahlberg continued. UniKey’s VP of Sales and Marketing Dirk Wyckoff thinks it is also crucial for the smart home that devices can stand on their own when integrating devices into a single intelligent system. “For a product to have mass appeal, the product’s value proposition to the consumer must be singular in nature, meaning it must stand on its own without necessary integration into a larger system that is typically reserved for services with monthly fees. The product must be simple and elegant in both interface and appearance.” UniKey developed the technology behind the popular smart lock Kwikset Kevo. A home full of devices that can interact with each other for the benefit of the user is indeed attractive. The concept of energy management has become popular—not just controlling appliances via a mobile app, but the integration of those appliances with the rest of the home, Kenny said. “For example,

when I arm my alarm system, the thermostat automatically adjusts. If I leave my backdoor open by mistake, I can have the system adjust to that, too.”

pulliNg it All together For the connected home to be realized, devices need some way to exchange data. This can be achieved at the device level, through a hub, or through a cloud service. Many manufactures have their own ecosystems of connected devices, but this is a barrier for wider adoption. There are also multiple proprietary and open protocols that are widely adopted by the industry for use in connected devices—the problem is, users have to go through hoops to make them work together. Interoperability is essential for the smart appliance industry because consumers want to have the flexibility to buy best-of-breed appliances and have them work together, Dahlberg said. In the case of Blacksumac’s popular security and home automation unit Piper, which reached three times its original funding goal on crowdfunding platform Indiegogo, Z-Wave was the optimal protocol. “Most users know very little or nothing about smart home technologies, and we wanted to give of users the broadest range of interoperable smart home accessories to make learning about it easy for them. Z-wave offers our users with a huge range of choices and from a large group of manufactures,” said Russell Ure, CEO and co-founder of Blacksumac. Alarm.com’s system is more holistic, working with Z-Wave, ZigBee and WiFi devices. However, not all protocols are created equal. “The main difference for us when we evaluated the protocols available

on the market is that Z-Wave had more of a standards approach to their protocol. If you integrated a Z-Wave chip into your solution, anything that is Z-Wave will work,” Kenny said. ZigBee, on the other hand, has many more variations; different ZigBee devices may run different “flavors” of ZigBee, Kenny continued. “There isn’t a standardization of the protocol. It is more like an open-source code base that people modify and use.” Wi-Fi devices can be even trickier, since some manufacturers, such as Nest and Sonos, do not officially give third parties access to their APIs. Solutions like Revolv work around this by reverse-engineering the APIs of popular devices made by these companies. However, this approach means that users will be shut out if these manufacturers push out a software update to their devices, Cooper said. In contrast, Staple Connect’s approach is to form partnerships directly with device makers. “Staples Connect is targeting the mass market consumer and we are focused on building the broadest and most compelling ecosystem for devices. As such, it is important for us to give consumers assurances that the devices included in the ecosystem are done so in an official capacity, with the manufacturers a core part of the experience,” Cooper continued. “At a high level, the more devices we can embrace and bring in to this solution, the better it is for consumers. However, we’re sticking to our model where we work with premium brands consumers know and trust, while also keeping the ecosystem open for new, compelling and emerging companies as well.” Standards make for lower cost implementations, since the learning curve is not as steep; it is also easier to create systems in which products from multiple manufacturers work together. On the other hand, proprietary systems afford advantages such as longer range (1W 900MHz networks can go over a mile) and plug-and-play installation and provisioning, Dahlberg said. It is unlikely that all manufacturers will 30 mySMAhome.com March/April 2014

collaborate to interoperate in the home by agreeing to adopt the same communication protocol, but interoperability can be achieved relatively easier in the cloud. “Arrayent already has a customer, Chamberlain, that connects its LiftMaster branded garage door openers to an Alarm.com home security app via cloudto-cloud integration,” Dahlberg said.

oFFloAdiNg iNteroperABility to the Cloud Alarm.com’s approach to interoperability relies on its cloud service. “Our system consists of communication devices that go in the home, a cloud service connects all the different elements and cuts rules and automation for the hub to bring them all together, and apps to make management and operation simple for users,” Kenny said. The devices don’t have to talk to each other in the house. The door sensors talk to the hub through radio waves; the door lock and thermostat through Z-Wave, Kenny continued. “They don’t talk to each other, but our system can talk to them in a choreographed way, so if you open the door system, the thermostat can adjust, for example.”

>>>>>>>> cloud servIces also allow devIce makers to offer more advanced features that may not be possIble when lImIted to the hardware of a sIngle devIce, especIally when the devIce Itself has lImIted processIng power

Kenny provided another example, “Our video cameras connect over broadband. They don’t talk to the other devices, but they’re aware of what’s going on the house because they talk to our service. The devices don’t necessarily talk to each other, but they can do intelligent rules because they talk to our cloud service.” Cloud services also allow device makers to offer more advanced features that may not be possible when limited to the hardware of a single device, especially when the device itself has limited processing power—sensors, for example. With richer features, device makers can also differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market, Wyckoff said. “These technologies are enabling us to succeed in a demanding environment.” It is, however, important that users do not lose the ability to control their devices even when their Internet connection at home is down. The advantage of a point-to-point solution is that if the Internet goes down, the system will still function; when you press the light switch, the lights will go off, because it does not depend on an Internet connection, Cooper said. “Even in 2014, broadband service in the U.S.A. still isn’t 100 percent reliable all the time. Most people, even with some form of broadband, don’t realize it’s not always consistent or reliable. Downtime of less than a minute may not be a big deal when web surfing, but it matters when you come home late at night and your lights don’t work. We believe a home automation solution needs to work even when the Internet is slow or down,” Cooper continued. “When Staples Connect customers are inside their home using a smartphone or tablet, they connect to the hub via their home WiFi network. When they are outside the home, they connect via their cellular network, through the cloud, to the hub,” Cooper said. The key factors for a successful cloud service are scalability, latency, security, and reliability, which are also the some of the biggest challenges in making cloud software,

Cooper said.

iNterNet CoNNeCtiVity = SeCurity iSSueS Any device that connects to the Internet is bound to have vulnerabilities, especially when manufacturers are inexperienced in making these types of devices or deliberately neglect security to cut costs. “First and foremost, security aspects cannot be compromised, and I can’t stress how intricate those elements are. Opening a door with a mobile device is one thing, opening it without vulnerabilities is another,” Wyckoff said. “Our product has been on the market for four months and has been publicly declared attack against by the black hat community. This speaks volumes about our architecture and implementation. This element is so often overlooked in the Internet of Things, but when you couple this to the access to your home, security cannot be compromised in any fashion.” While some try to argue that tighter security impacts user exerience, it is not necessarily a zero-sum game. “We believe that security is the responsibility of the device manufacturer, and at Blacksumac we take security very seriously,” Ure said. “Security problems are due to poor testing and poorly defined internal test programs rather than a result of improved usability.”

2014: The Year of The SmarT home (Kind of) By Gary Tang

34 mySMAhome.com March/April 2014

A prominent theme this year at CES was the smart home — there seemed to be value in connecting to the Internet every object in the home. Another was wearables, which, in essence, turns the user into a connected device. A noticeable trend was the slow death of "home automation" as a buzzword. In its place, terms like "smart home" and "connected home" became dominant.

Home automation has been around for more than a decade, but has remained relatively stagnant u n t i l re c e n t y e a r s . M u l t i p l e factors contribute to the revisited interest. US telcos have poured significant resources into market education, helping consumers better understand how they can benefit from an automated home. Another reason the pace of development has accelerated is because of advances in manufacturing and wireless technologies. And then, of course, there's price—no longer do smart home systems come with a hefty price tag and require professional installation. At its core, however, the smart home market has benefited greatly from the prevalence of smartphones and the emergence of the app economy. In many markets, more than half of the population keep in their pocket a powerful, handheld, multipurpose computer that features a large screen display, numerous sensors, and is always connected. The most obvious implication this has for users is inexpensive remote video surveillance that allows them to keep an eye on their home, whether they're mainly interested in enforcing curfews for children, keeping an eye on pets, or for security purposes. With a little imagination, however, the possibilities are endless.

or safety. This is accomplished through sensors that give insight about the environment, services or devices that process that data, and devices that act accordingly. This year at CES, the potential of the smart home was highlighted by demonstrations of both open and proprietary protocals like the AllJoyn framework, ZigBee and Z-Wave. Qualcomm's "Connected Smart Home" demonstration showcased how events could trigger AllJoyn devices to send notifications to every other AllJoyn device on the network. Some of the devices featured were an August smart lock that could be controlled via a smartphone app, Lifx lights that change color according to different events, a Haier air conditioner that responded to triggers sent by the aforementioned devices, and more. ZigBee's booth, while not as elaborate, also showcased h o w d e v i c e s f ro m d i ff e r e n t manufacturers could work together seamlessly to enhance day-to-day life.

Z - Wa v e t o u t s t h e l a r g e s t ecosystem of smart home devices, announcing late last year the 1,000th addition to its family of supported devices. Their booth focused on how the protocal and Z-Wave devices have evolved over the years.

PoPulAr ProDuct cAtegorieS Home appliance makers Haier, LG, Samsung and Whirlpool showcased their visions of a smart home. However, more common "smart" products at CES were ones that consumers can easily relate to and understand the benefits, such as various types of cameras, door locks, power outlets and power strips, and lighting equipment. Q u i t e a f e w m a n u f a c t u re r s showcased home security cameras. Basic features include remote monitoring via smartphones, Wi-Fi connectivity and PIR motion sensors. More advanced models included features like two-way audio, push and text notifications and cloudbased storage.

Z-Wave made sure visitors knew that it had the largest ecosystem of smart home devices.

Home security cameras are already fairly mature products, so the more interesting ones were all about creative applications. Amaryllo's Skype-certified iCam HD cameras featured an aesthetically pleasing design and VR-like controls. FLIR Systems introduced a multipurpose camera that uses optional cases to become either an indoor or outdoor home security camera, wearable camera or dashboard-mounted car camera. Video door phones like Skybell and Doorbot upgrade traditional doorbells with video, audio, smartphone notifications and remote monitoring. Two notable cameras at CES were crowdfunded smart home cameras Canary and Blacksumac's Piper. They both integrate into the smart home ecosystem and have builtin sensors that enable innovative features. Canary is a member of the AllSeen Alliance, while Piper uses the Z-Wave protocol. Numerous vendors were showcasing smart power outlets or power strips. The most obvious value in connecting ordinary objects to the Internet is that they enable off-site control, and power strips are no exception. More advanced ones also connect to other devices in the home via proprietary or open standards, enabling infinite possibilities for automation. Lighting equipment was more colorful than anything else. Philips Hue brought smart light bulbs to the mainstream, and is arguably the market leader in this product category. Its 16 million colors cater to any user and any mood, while IFTTT and ZigBee support enable trigger-based events. Startups like Lifx and iLumi have their own takes on this product category, however. Lifx uses the AllJoyn framework to eliminate the need for a dedicated hub that needs to be attached to the Internet router, while iLumi uses Bluetooth LE. 36 mySMAhome.com March/April 2014

It is evident from this year's CES that there is at east some value in connecting ordinary objects to the Internet. From spoons to toothbrushes to scales to flowerpots to refrigerators, connected objects can send data on usage patterns and user behavior to other devices or cloud-based services. This data can then be recorded and analyzed to, ideally, provide insight on how users can improve their lifestyles. For objects that do not yet have built-in sensors or connectivity, Sen.se's compact multipurpose sensors can be attached to any object to fill in the gap.

Smart Home GadGetS at CeS 2014

It was clear from the 2014 International CES that the concepts of smart home and connected devices were on the minds of many people, both exhibitors and attendees. Many exhibitors expressed their (pleasant) surprise at how far the industry has progressed, in terms of market education. Although the seemingly sudden explosion of smart home gadgets was enabled by advances in multiple technologies, there was also a consensus that attendees actually understood home automation well enough to shift the conversation from "What does it do" to "How well does it work." Without in-depth testing and comparison, it is difficult to determine which products were "better," but CES was indeed a treasure trove of interesting concepts, technologies, products and services. We looked at dozens of products or services and chose 25 that either showed great potential, had innovative features, were beautifully designed, executed obvious ideas that previously went unnoticed, or offered solutions to realworld problems. These products show a glimpse at the potential of connected devices to enrich everyday life for consumers. While it is important to keep in mind that we are still in the early stages of the smart home "movement," it is no less exciting to see what possibilities lie ahead. The next few years are going to be exhilarating.

Cube Cameras on The rise

With increasing popularity of home automation and home monitoring, the demand for cube cameras is on the rise. According to IMS Research, an IHS company, the world shipment volume of consumer and DIY network cameras is predicted to grow prominently from 846,200 units in 2014 to approximately 1.3 million units in 2016. The research firm indicated that about 20 percent of American households adopt professional home surveillance services already. Thanks to improved technology, home surveillance services are getting more affordable and accessible for the users. Cube cameras, with wireless connectivity, feature flexible installation in indoor areas in comparison with traditional professional surveillance cameras. In addition to homes, they are also designed for use in indoor surveillance primarily in small offices, shops, chain stores and schools. The maturity of the network infrastructure, the end users’ increasing demand for home security or small-scale security system, and the prevalence of 4G LTE are seen as three major driving forces to drive the growth of cube cameras. 4G LTE technology supports faster transmission speed at 100Mbit/s. North America and Europe are two major smart home markets. North America is leading the market regarding home security. The Europe market shows high interest in smart homes and energy conservation. Asia is another important market to watch, with seeable high growth in the near future.

SMArter To make your cameras smarter, software plays an important role. For example, event notifications and free access to cloud storage for video recordings are available on mobile devices and web browsers via exclusive software. The enhanced features, commonly seen in professional security cameras, boost the market need of cube cameras. The different features of home cube cameras from entry-level DIY cameras comprise low-light performance, PoE, edge storage, and support for alarm inputs and outputs. The major features of the network cameras comprise compact design, wireless connectivity, easy setup, secured Wi-Fi connection and mobile surveillance. To be more specific, users can view high-resolution videos remotely from browser or any other mobile devices via Wi-Fi wireless technology and their cube cameras. The cost-saving cube cameras can offer professional-grade surveillance performance with up to 2-megapixel resolution at 30fps. They can offer smoother video and image quality than those entry-level DIY models that typically support 1-megapixel resolution and video speed at15fps at most. When talking about low-light performance, some cube cameras come with mechanical IR cut filters (ICRs) to deliver sharper images at night and truer color at daytime. Those with IR night vision function can support a monitoring range of up to 10 or 15 meters. While DIY models, equipped with IR LEDs, support half the viewing distance at night of cube cameras with ICRs.

WhAt’S neW beSideS hoMe Security Besides the home-use market, we can see a growing demand on surveillance services for child and elderly care, such as kindergartens, infant daycare and elderly care centers, especially in Asian countries. Parents can watch their children’s activities with both recorded and realtime video. More detailed and prompt communication between parents and teachers can be done henceforth.

P2P

to plug-and-play

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network technology makes it simpler, more convenient and faster to communicate through the Internet. The technology depends on computing capability and bandwidth of multiple interconnected peers instead of only a few servers. Nowadays, around 50 to 90 percent of Internet traffic is processed by P2P technology. It is one of the most popular technologies seen in those hot social networking applications like FaceBook, LINE, WeChart, QQ, ICQ, Skype and Yahoo Pager. P2P, required to use servers, allows users to communicate with each other as well as to exchange messages and files with ease. There are slow Intenet connections among different network operators with traditional IP cameras and cube IP cameras. Some of the cameras even don’t offer remote surveillance features. For example, users have jittery video streaming or can’t see remote videos through IP cameras. The problems now can be solved with P2P technology. Also, the technology enables a truly plug-and-play operation without adoption of the mirror port.

The BenefiTs Are, 1. Users can access a network security camera via its unique iD. 2. no mirror port required. Users can view simultaneous videos remotely just via internet-connected mobile phones. 3. fully connectivity is enabled to those network cameras that cannot connect with P2P technology by transferring video files between servers and cameras.

Security

IOActIve: vulNerAbIlItIes leAve hAlf A mIllION belkIN wemO users At rIsk IOACTIVE HAS UNCOVERED multiple vulnerabilities in Belkin WeMo Home Automation devices that could affect over half a million users. Belkin's WeMo uses Wi-Fi and the mobile Internet to control home electronics anywhere in the world directly from the users' smartphone. Mike Davis, IOActive's principal research scientist, uncovered that attackers may the ability to remotely control WeMo Home Automation attached devices over the Internet, perform malicious firmware updates, remotely monitor the devices (in some cases), and access an internal home network.

The Impact The vulnerabilities found within the Belkin WeMo devices expose users to several potentially costly threats, from home fires2 with possible tragic consequences down to the simple waste of electricity. The reason for this is that, after attackers compromise the WeMo devices, they can be used to remotely turn attached devices on and off at any time. Given the number of WeMo devices in use, it is highly likely that many of the attached appliances and devices will be unattended, thus increasing the threat posed by these vulnerabilities. Additionally, once an attacker has established a connection to a WeMo device within a victim's network; the device can be used as a foothold to attack other devices such as laptops, mobile phones, and attached network file storage.

The Vulnerabilities The Belkin WeMo firmware images that are used to update the devices are signed with public key encryption to protect against unauthorised modifications. However, the signing key and password are leaked on the firmware that is already installed on the devices. This allows attackers to use the same signing key and password to sign their own malicious firmware and bypass security checks during the firmware update process. Additionally, Belkin WeMo devices do not validate Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificates preventing them from validating communications with Belkin's cloud service including the firmware update RSS feed. This allows attackers to use any SSL certificate to impersonate Belkin's cloud services and push malicious firmware updates and capture credentials at the same

70 mySMAhome.com March/April 2014

time. Due to the cloud integration, the firmware update is pushed to the victim's home regardless of which paired device receives the update notification or its physical location. The Internet communication infrastructure used to communicate Belkin WeMo devices is based on an abused protocol that was designed for use by Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services to bypass firewall or NAT restrictions. It does this in a way that compromises all WeMo devices security by creating a virtual WeMo darknet where all WeMo devices can be connected to directly; and, with some limited guessing of a 'secret number', controlled even without the firmware update attack. The Belkin WeMo server application programming interface (API) was also found to be vulnerable to an XML inclusion vulnerability, which would allow attackers to compromise all WeMo devices.

Belkin Statement on Feb 18:

BELKIN HAS CORRECTED the list of five potential vulnerabilities affecting the WeMo line of home automation solutions that was published in a CERT advisory on February 18. Belkin was in contact with the security researchers prior to the publication of the advisory, and, as of February 18, had already issued fixes for each of the noted potential vulnerabilities via in-app notifications and updates. Users with the most recent firmware release (version 3949) are not at risk for malicious firmware attacks or remote control or monitoring of WeMo devices from unauthorized devices as described in the report. Belkin urges such users to download the latest app from the App Store (version 1.4.2) or Google Play Store (version 1.1.2) and then upgrade the firmware version through the app.

ADT AND MCAFEE released the results of a survey that takes a look at the important parallels between personal and online security. When asked, 39% of respondents said they use technological devices to control their home security systems and 34% use smartphones to do so. Commissioned by The Futures Company, the joint survey of over 1,000 consumers shows that more than 51% of respondents reported having their personal security compromised through both physical and online breaches. While 31% of respondents of the survey said their smartphone presented the most potential for security risk and 49% stated that their computers are more vulnerable, 41% still fear losing smartphones most in a public setting. Though this is the case, respondents did not seem too concerned with protecting them, and many are comfortable sharing their passwords with others. Two in three smartphone users (67%) and tablet users (65%) report that they protect their devices with a password, yet nearly half (49%) admitted to sharing their password with at least one other person, risking their personal security and all the data found on their device. Since over 33% of people use their devices to control to their physical alarm systems, and more than half of them fail to secure their devices with basic protection like private passwords, it seems the need for awareness in security is great as the need for security itself. Among those who have experienced a home break-in, 59% reported a computer or mobile device among stolen items – leaving their personal data in the hands of thieves. COMCAST PLANS TO announce that it has struck a deal with Time Warner Cable(TWC) to acquire the nation's second largest cable MSO for $44 billion in stock, CNBC and other media outlets reported. News of the agreement, which would see Comcast acquire TWC for about $159 per share, came one day after Charter Communications announced that it would nominate 13 directors for TWC's board of directors in an attempt to execute a hostile takeover of TWC. Charter offered to acquire TWC for $132.50 per share last month. A combined Comcast-TWC would create a cable MSO with 33 million subscribers, counting 13 million more video subscribers than DirecTV, which ended third quarter with around 20 million U.S. subscribers. But Comcast said that it is "prepared" to divest cable systems counting about 3 million subscribers. In 2009, the U.S. Court of Appeals threw out the FCC's cable system ownership cap, which said that no single cable MSO could own systems with more than 30 percent of all U.S. subscribers. Comcast said it expects to count about 30 million subscribers nationwide, after closing the TWC merger and system divestures.

HONEYWELL'S VISTA HOME security panels are now compatible with home automation systems from Savant Systems, giving installers more options for creating connected home solutions. In addition to enhanced security functions, combining VISTA with Savant's suite of Apple-based technologies allows installers to increase the value of their sales by offering automation and multi-zone audio and video products. “Homeowners aren't interested in replacing reliable security systems they've had for years just to obtain it,” said Alan Stoddard, senior marketing director, Honeywell Security Products Americas. “This combined offering allows them to incorporate the latest in home automation.” Later on, Honeywell Total Connect 2.0 is released for homeowners, business owners and security professionals. The app is designed to address convenience and control for end users and operational efficiency for installers. Now dealers and end users can use an iPad to perform customized setups for video and automation applications. Installers are benefited with use of their own iPad devices to configure each camera’s motion detection areas for a real time savings with the new app. The Wi-Fi signal strength indicators provide a visual confirmation for proper Wi-Fi camera installation, virtually eliminating guesswork.
