Let’s Talk About the Weather! Summertime in Slovenia is mostly sunny. But what if a cloud-and-raindrop symbol is displayed in the forecast? First of all, be aware that because the small country offers different climate types along with different landscapes it also has different weather forecasts. As a result, a cloud-sun-and-a-raindrop symbol is sometimes the most meaningful way to represent Slovenian weather. To get a more detailed picture of what plan the sky has, Slovene internet users love to consult the National Meteorology Service website (search for “arso webmet”) where a genial genie Aladdin displays a detailed and pretty reliable forecast of cloud coverage, rains, winds and temperatures. But even technology can’t beat the sixth sense of the natives. It goes like: “Hey, grandpa, do you think we’ll get wet if we take this hill now?” Expected answer: “Naah, definitely not if you return before seven – then it will rain.” Trust it. Okay, okay… But what if, by chance, rain really starts? Well if it does, expect it to be more a storm than a monsoon. But then again, it is just some H2O from the sky, isn’t it? A refreshment. You can: start dancing and get wet. Or, find any kind of shelter and watch where the rainbow appears. Or, go to the nearest Gostilna, ask for the local schnapps and talk to the people, not necessarily about the weather. Or, move from the outdoor to the indoor swimming pool. And so on. Well, enough frivolity. Rain presents no real threat, unless you plan to climb the mountains – rocks become slippery and lightning flashes nasty at certain peaks, especially in the Alps. Do keep that in mind and avoid the risks. Also in eastern plains the rainfall occasionally turns into hailstorms. When this happens it is strongly advised to stay sheltered. But since this summer is expected to be a sunny one, it is much more important to consider your sunscreen protection than the rain. And remember: there is no air conditioning as effective as the mountain breeze or a jump into the river, lake or the sea. The Slovenia Times Summer Guide presents you the finest selection of places in the country: places where you can have a great time whether you are a business guest, lazy tourist, adrenaline junkie, curious for history, or maybe, want your kids to have fun… while learning what colour the cows really are. Even though it is a Summer guide, it is valid all year round and, of course, in both sunshine and rain. Jaka Terpinc, editor (editor@sloveniatimes.com)

Where You Rest Your Body and Soul Franja, the Partisan Hospital Franja is a cultural monument of national importance, registered in the trial list of the World Heritage List of UNESCO, and bears the sign of European heritage. The monument has been almost entirely reconstructed after its destruction by floods in September 2007, and was reopened in May 2010. Visiting Hours: from 1st April to 31st October, every day from 9am to 6pm; from 1st November to 31st March; tours available for groups by prior arrangement, in favourable weather conditions.

Divje babe Archaeological Park Fifty-five thousand years ago, in a small cave, a Stone Age Neanderthal man carefully drilled three identical holes into the bone of a young cave bear with his stone tools and elicited a simple melody from it. The cave, located 200 metres above the riverbed of the Idrijca River, is today a part of the Divje babe archaeological park and is open for sightseeing. For more information, visit TIC Cerkno, the local tourist organization.

The Zaganjalka Spring The spring Zaganjalka, located under Cerkljanski vrh, more specifically in Volčja grapa, has interesting hydrological natural qualities. It is an interesting karst feature, characterized by the changing of its water flow. When the flow is normal, it will take around seven minutes for the water to almost dry up and then come out from the depths again.

Postojna Welcome to the Karst The Postojna cave, the Predjama castle and the Park of Military History in Pivka are among the greatest Slovenian tourist attractions. The Cave Mansion, which adorns the entrance to the karst beauty, the Postojna cave, is a famous events and culinary centre, where we can meet the wishes of the most demanding of guests.

The Mysterious Underground Beauty The Postojna cave is the largest cave of the classic karst and the most visited tourist cave in Europe. A cave train enables you to admire all the dimensions and possibilities of the underground world. The most beautiful passages were discovered by locals in 1818 and were arranged for tourist visits a year later. Since then, this miracle of nature has been viewed by more than 33 million visitors.

Mission Through tradition and knowledge, we create unique experiences of karst sites and beauty. We preserve our natural and cultural heritage for our descendants.

Vision The karst, with its treasures of natural and cultural heritage, is one of the most popular european tourist destinations. Authentic holidays and custom-made services simply must be experienced.

Events Furmanski praznik (Horse Cart Drivers’ Day) in Postojna! On Sunday, July 4, 2010, you are invited to the traditional Furman’s festival in the park in front of the Postojna cave. The event will present the rich heritage of carriages; Postojna was once a place where the cart drivers used to stop and gather together. The holiday will be enriched with an accompanying program, featuring a goulash competition, an accordion competition, an exhibition of vintage cars and of course the famous parade of the cart drivers with many carriages, loads and guests. There will be no lack of partying with dancing and live music, either.

Erazem’s knight tournament in Predjama

The Castle of the Rebellious Knight Erasmus Just 10 kilometers beyond the Postojna cave is one of the most picturesque wonders of human history – for more than 700 years the Predjama castle has reigned on a 123-metre high rocky cliff; mighty, defiant and unobtainable, perfect for a secret home of the bold, headstrong and rebellious Erasmus of Predjama.

The Legacy of Wars In the Park of Military History in Pivka you can take a look at a collection of the most valuable specimens of heavy weapons (tanks, armoured vehicles and cannons); it is an important military and technical legacy of various armies.

On Saturday, 17th July and Sunday, 18th July, 2010, the largest medieval spectacle with international participation in Slovenia will be held in the historic painted village of Predjama. The mystical atmosphere will begin on Saturday, when a spectacular night siege of the Predjama castle will be shown. In a night of fire and fun, you will be able to enjoy a medieval feast and sleep under the unique historic fort – the romantic Predjama castle will be open until midnight. Sunday morning will bring the 15th Erasmus Knights Tournament, where you will witness knights fighting on foot and on horseback, Renaissance music, the performances of several clowns and a magician, peasants’ games, a medieval market place and a medieval feast. All this will be enjoyed together with the Tournament’s host, Peter Poles, dressed as a castle scribe.

Kranjska Gora

Summer in the Kingdom of Goldenhorn In the northwest of Slovenia, there is a magical land, offering thousands of snowy pleasures in the winter and, during the warm summer days, an escape from the unbearable heat and a pleasant coolness to all those who want holidays full of activity and experiences. It is simply one of the most beautiful mountain treasures: Kranjska Gora. In both summer and winter, Kranjska Gora offers a rich variety of active experiences. You can choose between hiking, biking, Nordic walking, golf, fishing, horseback riding, mountain climbing, alpine, cross-country or back-country skiing, sledding and ice skating.

You can opt for lazy pedalling or for the more demanding trips into the heart of the Alpine valleys. Sunbathing (and sweating) awaits you on the steep slopes of the Karavanke Mountains as well as on a bicycle route over three countries, starting on the border with Austria and Italy, which also gives you a chance to visit Bled through the Radovna valley. The cycling map and a lunch in your backpack may be the best way to get to know the Zgornjesavska valley. The cycling path is marked all the way to the village of Mojstrana, but you can as well leave it and discover numerous places off the beaten track. In Kranjska Gora, little ones are well taken care off as well. Many lively experiences are available just for them.

Hiking Hiking is in the forefront of summer activities. There are enough paths to satisfy everyone, providing easy recreational hikes but also serious mountain tours, demanding experience, proper equipment and a mountaineering guide. The first wonderful path can be found within the Triglav National Park: the Triglavska Bistrica Trail in the Vrata valley is an exquisite experience of nature; here you will find the Peričnik waterfall, several natural galleries and the mighty north wall of Mount Triglav. Conquering Triglav by this wall is a venture in itself. Wonderful experiences are to be had in the Kot valley; from there the path will lead you through the Radovna valley to Vintgar. Those who enjoy the sight of overhanging walls have to try out the difficult path to Mount Prisank via the Vršič mountain pass. Those who prefer secure vistas should discover their way to Mount Sleme, a meditative solitude of the panoramic forest walk from Vršič to the lakes, overlooking the majestic Mount Jalovec. Perhaps the most beautiful route in the Zgornjesavska valley is the path to the first and second Martuljek waterfalls.

Nordic Walking Kranjska Gora offers many opportunities for this increasingly popular version of ordinary walking. Instructors and walking pole rental are available.

Events This summer, Kranjska Gora invites you to a number of festivals and sporting events: 26 June–4 July - 9 Kekec Days (a series of educational and entertaining events for youth) 17 July - Alenka Gotar (concert) 16–18 - July Itak Festival (a mountain bike downhill and cross-country race) 24–25 July - Commemorative ceremony at the Russian Chapel 24 July - Slovenski Oktet (concert) 28 July–1 Aug Summer Festival 28 July - Izidor Erazem Grafenauer (concert) 29 July - Quatro Por Tango (Performance) 30 July - Wolverhampton Youth Orchestra (concert) 31 July - Orgličarji in Matjaž Robavs (concert) 1 Aug - Nina Strnad & Peter Mihelič Trio 7 Aug - Gala opening of Slovenski planinski muzej (The Slovenian Alpine Museum) in Mojstrana

Kekčeva dežela (The Land of Kekec) Children from ages three to ten are welcomed by Kekec, who serves them sour milk and “žganci” (a sort of mush), shows them his hut and tells a few stories. Kekec also arranges meetings with other heroes of writer Josip Vandot’s mountain world: the evil Bedanec, the herbalist aunt Pehta, wise Vitranc, friendly Mojca and timid Rožle.

15 Aug - 19th Vaški dan (Village Day) in Rateče

Škratova dežela (The Land of the Dwarfs) In the mysterious region of Gozd Martuljek (the Martuljek forest), dwarves appear, specifically for kids. They leave signs that they are on the right track, but present themselves only at the end, when the kids cross the threshold of Dwarf Land.

Triglav Fairytales In villages of Dovje and Mojstrana, young sprouts learn seven new fairytales and satisfy their sweet tooth with a giant’s cookie.

15 Aug - Kranjska Gora’s 10 km run 4 Sep - 32nd Juriš na Vršič (a marathon) 5 Sep - Super D 15–18 Sep - Alpenfahrt (race of classic cars)

Beauty with the Magic Power

The Triglav National Park The town of Bled lies on the edge of the Triglav National Park, the only national park in Slovenia. Its 83,807 hectares occupy practically the entire Slovenian Julian Alps. Bled is an ideal starting point if you want to visit the park’s natural beauties, because many accessible and well-maintained sights lie close by (the Vintgar gorge, the Pokljuka plateau, the Pokljuka gorge, the cave under Babji zob, Lake Bohinj).

The Perfect Place for Meetings People are sociable beings brought together by different things like wanting to have or to acquire new knowledge, business meetings, the culture, and sports. It is easy to socialize in Bled because it lies in the heart of Europe and has great international links. And when you’re in Bled, you do not need your car anymore, for everything is at hand.

Pletna Boat The first records of this boat date back to the 12th century when the poorest farmers from the Mlino village, which lies on the south shore of Lake Bled, were given a task from the authorities to bring pilgrims to Bled island instead of paying tithe. Later, several families were authorized to carry them over and, since then, the pletna boat business has been passed on from generation to generation.

Lasting Memories You can relive pleasant memories with your eyes closed; in a coach ride around Lake Bled, or in a pletna boat sailing to the island and then ringing the wish bell for a secret wish to come true. There are many who take their marriage vows in Bled.

The fairytale beauty of Lake Bled has allured for millenniums with its magic power. We could quote travel writers, writers, rulers and presidents, but France Prešeren (1800-1849), the greatest Slovenian poet, described it the most beautifully: “The Kranj region has no greater beauty than this image of paradise with its surroundings”.

Seekers of exciting adventures, lovers of simple cosiness, family tourists and world travellers in love with nature can all discover places anew every time, with their unique Alpine and Mediterranean climate. Grand peaks, sheep and goat pastures interspersed with trails, enchanting streams, rivers and waterfalls weave an abundance of experiences throughout the year.

For many, the most beautiful European river, it is safeguarded by 2000 metres high peaks, flows through rocky gorges and enchants with its emerald colour. The best-known inhabitant of the emerald river is the Soča trout, an endemic fish that can be caught as nicely with a camera as with a fishhook.

The Stunning Beauty of the Soča River

Kanin Even though the Kanin mountain range is quite high, a fairly Mediterranean sun still scorches its crests. The view from Kanin reaches all the way to the east Julian Alps and the sea. Kanin is a great place for trekking and mountaineering, a take-off point for paragliders, while mountain bikers can try out their skills in the Kanin Mountain Bike Park. Numerous deep Karst abysses and natural sights are also characteristic of Kanin, with Prestreljeniško okno (the window in Mt. Prestreljenik) being the most visited. The remains of the Soča Front can be found on Kanin and, if you go up Prevala over the col, you can see the traces of an Italian hospital there. You can also bump into the indigenous Bovec sheep on that trail, through which Bovec cheese also became famous. There is also an educational trail for those who are not really good walkers, presenting the high alpine Karst area of Kanin with its 220 million years of geological history. In winter, Kanin becomes a popular skiing resort, particularly interesting for its newly established connection with the Italian slope Sella Nevea. This shared area offers a variety of possibilities for skiers of all skills. Italian tracks are gentler and slightly wider, while the Slovenian slope, positioned at a very high altitude, boasts with excellent snow conditions well into spring. The cabin lift to Kanin operates every day in July and August and every weekend from June to the end of September. The details are on its website.

A World of Adrenaline Adventures

1915-17 The Isonzo Front is known as one of the bloodiest battle sites from the First World War. Many different nations fought in the Italian army against the Austrohungarian and German empires. The remains of the front are still visible in the Bovec area. One of the major attractions from this period is the Kluže Fort.

Golf Golf lovers can swing their clubs on the new nine hole golf course. Five different tees are arranged according to USGA standards with regard to the player’s knowledge, which gives beginners an easier game and poses a more demanding and interesting challenge to good players and professionals.

The Soča River and its tributaries offer a diversity of sports and recreational activities, lead by adrenaline adventures with a raft, a river bobsled, a kayak or canyoning. Besides water and air activities – i.e. flying over Bovec with a paraglider or a light plane – there are plenty of activities to choose from on the solid ground, i.e. golf, horse-riding, biking, tennis and hiking. And the admirers of the mysterious underground can visit the caves. You can end your sporting day by going to a swimming pool or sauna.

From the former mining centre Idrija is transforming into an educationally interesting and tourist destination, well worth a visit. Idrija has also been marked by its worldwide appreciated lace. Culinary offer is rich and varied, the most famous speciality being “idrijski žlikrofi” (Idrija dumplings). In Idrija and its immediate surroundings you will find nature, peace, relaxation and unlimited opportunities to actively spend your vacation. In 2011, Idrija will bear the title »The Alpine town of year 2011«, which means that it is committed to the concept of sustainable development and environmental responsibility. The title promises positive developments in the field of protecting cultural and natural heritage and environmental cleanness.

An Exemplary Alpine Town

According to oral tradition, the mercury was discovered by chance by man (škafar) obtaining water from the spring. When he wanted to raise the bucket, it would barely move. He captured mercury, a liquid metal with such density that makes even a piece of iron float on it like a cork. News of the find quickly spread and attracted a multitude of people into the underdeveloped basin. In the place where mercury was first discovered a Holy Trinity Church now stands.

Activities in All Seasons Hiking, biking along the marked trails, swimming in natural swimming pool in Idrijska Bela, climbing, fishing in clean waters of Idrija, hunting, mushroom picking, tennis, etc. The possibilities for sporting activities in the summer are countless as well. There are several cycling routes of various levels of difficulty, for example the Smugglers’ route on the Ledina Plateau, the route on the Vojskarska plateau, the route on the Črni Vrh plateau, and the route into the heart of the Idrija forests.

The international Idrija Lace Festival in the the penultimate weekend in June; as an ethnological, economic, cultural, educational and entertaining event it grants Idrija a unique character, as the town literally breathes the lace making tradition during the festival.

The Assumption aka Prfarski štrukljevc, happening on the second Sunday in August, attracts a large number of visitors and pilgrims. The central point of the festival is the church of ‘Mary on the rock’, where the church service is held and a feast afterwards, where “štruklji” (a kind of dumplings) are always prepared and small wreaths are braided while dancing and singing. The international Alter-art festival presents a number of artists in the fields of amateur culture, alternative youth subcultures and “serious” culture, young alternative music groups from Slovenia and abroad, exhibitions of painters and photographers, dance performances and literary evenings.

The Rupnik Line

The Škofja Loka Passion Play– Processio Locopolitana – was written in 1721 by a Capuchin monk, Romuald Marušič, and is the oldest dramatic text written in the Slovene language. The play depicts the human race through the Christian tradition, from Adam and Eve through death to Christ’s suffering. Because of its content and spectacle, it represents a great cultural, historical and religious event of national significance. Let’s experience it together!

Kočevje has some of the bestpreserved natural areas in Europe, offering an abundance of possibilities for relaxation and discovery. In addition to its natural heritage, it inspires with its history, from the medieval era onward. The town of Kočevje can be a starting point for excursions to the surrounding forests and hills. In town, you can see many cultural and historical monuments. The economic, administrative and political centre of the municipality is the town of Kočevje, where more than half the population resides.

Events In summer, you can visit cultural entertaining events every Thursday evening in July and August. On 16th and 17th July, a traditional festival called “Prangerjada” takes place in Predgrad.

Kočevje In the Heart of Peaceful Nature Forest A special feature of the Kočevska region is the preservation of ancient nature, especially the forests. To date, six virgin forests with a total area of 217 hectares have been preserved. The forest is a home to many native predators (wild cat, bear, lynx, and wolf), large numbers of bird, deer and many others.

Recreation The diversity and dynamism of the area are reflected in various opportunities for rest and relaxation. You can learn about the landscape on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

Fishing Hunting and fishing are unique experiences. In the summer, the Kočevje lake (aka the Mining Lake) invites you to swim and fish.

Kolpa A real paradise for vacation is the Kolpa River, which has become a European Destination of Excellence this year.

Karst Phenomena The landscape is considered to be one of the largest continuous karst territories. Because of the typical karst soil, all streams except the Kolpa River are underground rivers that occasionally spring to surface. Other characteristics of the area are numerous karst caves, sinkholes and cave-ins, where the ice and snow do not melt until summer.

Rogaška Slatina

A Town of Water, Glass and Wine Those who are born for excellence can hardly become mediocre. And excellence was laid into Rogaška Slatina’s cradle long ago. Who knows when it was first awoken, but surely a long time ago, as the legend says, it was by the winged horse Pegasus. The beat of his hooves made mineral water with healing powers spring from the heart of the earth. Even today, the healing water, together with modern tourism services, attracts numerous visitors from near and far. We are a town of water. Water and earth go hand-in-hand with fire. From the 17th century onward, Rogaška Slatina’s furnaces have created true masterpieces from glass. We are a city of glass. As if that were not enough, the town of Rogaška Slatina is surrounded by wonderful picturesque landscape. Beloved Rogaška traditions and modern trends of sustainable tourism are Slatina combined in an intoxicating drink. We are a city of wine. Ljubljana 113 km

The park with its promenade is the green heart of the spa complex, around which a number of neoclassical hotel buildings are located. The range of sports activities is also diverse and appropriate for both recreational and professional sportsmen. Cycling fans can choose from 15 different cycling routes; riding, fishing and golf are also possible around Rogaška Slatina.

Long Known, Well Known The Rogaška springs have been known since ancient times and their marvellous water was first analyzed by alchemists in the 16th century. In the early 19th century, the popularity of the spas rose. The spa rapidly developed into the most important resort of the southern part of the Habsburg Empire and the water from Rogaška spring has become the third most popular mineral water in the world. It became apparent that the water not only satisfies your thirst, but also has medicinal properties. The healing mineral water has proven to be effective for many diseases. Due to exceptional levels of magnesium, the water was named Donat Mg.

Boč Nature Park A visit to the park will delight all nature lovers, since it is home to many plant and animal species. Its best-known plant is a Pasque (Pulsatilla grandis), which flourishes only around Easter holidays. The park offers plenty of options for hikers and bicyclists, while the curious can head out to the more thematic learning trails. Most of the area is a part of the NATURA 2000 European ecological network.

Touches That Leave an Impression Rogaška Slatina is a home to rest and welfare. Wellness centres are the right place for relaxation and pampering. Enjoy yourself in the pools with active thermomineral water, strengthen your immune system in saunas or treat yourself to one of the various massages and body treatments.

Where Wine and Food Shake Hands You will be offered delicious treats at many tourist and excursion farms in the surroundings; many of wine cellars (“gorce”) on the Rogaška wine route, where the hills of up to 500 meters high are adorned with different sorts of grapevines, will give you a tasting of high-quality wines.

Ptuj Town of Culture A brief historical overview from the Stone Age, through the Bronze and then Iron Age shows that Ptuj is certainly one of the greatest cultural treasures in Europe. In the past, Ptuj was an important crossroad between the East and the West, and the famous amber route ran across it in prehistoric times. The city has experienced two important development peaks in the history: at the time of Roman colonization and in the late Middle Age. The city of Poetovio with its 40,000 residents was one of the largest cities of the Roman provinces. Between the 9th and the 16th centuries, the city obtained its characteristic cityscape, which is evident in its triangular appearance, closed on both sides with the Dominican and Minorite monasteries and concluded at the top with the mighty castle of Ptuj.

Besides its rich architectural heritage, Ptuj also boasts a great diversity of cultural heritage, which is primarily maintained in a number of traditional events. Among the most important of these is certainly Kurentovanje (the international carnival festival), the largest ethnographic festival in Europe.

Town of Hundred Treasures Historical development gave Ptuj two monasteries and two magnificent churches. Reforms were not favourable for the Dominican convent, so they no longer reside there; instead the convent hosts a part of the collections of Pokrajinski muzej Ptuj-Ormož (Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum). In the quiet shelter of the old walls, you can visit the archaeological and numismatic collectionsand the Mithras. The Minorite monastery, which grew soon after the Dominican, still performs its function today. The visitors find it interesting mainly because of its Minorite library. Its rooms are the scene of some world-class exhibitions and cultural events, and its arcaded courtyard acts as the setting for numerous summer events. The reconstructed church of St. Peter and Paul belongs to the convent. On the tour of the old town, visitors can visit the town parish Church of St. Jurij (St. George), the richest and most beautiful architectural Ptuj monument, from the 12th century. On the outer walls are Renaissance and Baroque tombstones from the former cemetery. Near the church stands the mighty City Tower and the Orpheus monument. The tower was mentioned in the first town statute from the 1376. In 1830, curate Simon rebuilt ancient monuments found in Ptuj and its surroundings, into the tower, in order to protect them from collapse. This has resulted in one of the oldest outdoor lapidaries. The Orpheus monument is a Roman tombstone made of Pohorje marble, almost five metres tall. The central scene is a relief depiction of the ancient singer Orpheus. In the Middle Ages, it was used as the pillory (“pranger”). All those eager for cultural events can visit performances in the renovated theatre building of Mestno gledališče Ptuj (Ptuj Town Theatre), browse the well-stocked collections of books in Knjižnica Ivana Potrča (Ivan Potrč Library) in Mali grad (the Little castle) or look at permanent and temporary exhibitions in Miheličeva galerija (Mihelič Gallery) and other city museums and galleries.

Ptuj Castle Due to its strategic location, Grajski hrib (Castle Hill) has been inhabited since antiquity. The castle today reflects centuries of alterations and extensions. It houses the collections of the Regional Museum. The material is available to visitors in the form of fixed layouts: collections of feudal dwelling culture, weapons, and musical instruments, a castle gallery, a collection of traditional carnival masks, an ethnological collection, as well as temporary exhibitions.

Events

Town of Health and Welfare

We want to contribute to the promotion of tourism development in the town with a wide selection of events offered to the residents and visitors. For their events, many organizers will use the magnificent features of the old town, its squares, courtyards and luxurious spaces in the castle, library, Minorite monastery and many others. 27 June–11 July “Festival komorne glasbe” (Festival of Chamber Music), at various venues in old town; a cycle of six chamber concerts of classical music.

20–30 July Art Ptuj 2010, an international cultural festival of music and painting art with numerous concert events and exhibitions of recognized national and international artists in the old town; excellent music and contemporary visual art together.

Ptuj is the only place in Slovenia that brings together more than two millennia of traditions of offering health and welfare. Holidays in Terme Ptuj (Ptuj Spa) are a source of health and relaxation, but also a great opportunity for actively spent leisure time and lively water play. They are one of the youngest Slovenian spas, where you are offered an accommodation in high-quality apartments and bungalows of different sizes, camp accommodation and accommodation in the new four-star Grand Hotel Primus. The thermal Park consists of a total of 4200 m² of water surface with healing mineral water in the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, but it is also well known for the largest water slide in Slovenia. Sports enthusiasts can choose from a number of facilities, among which the most numerous are tennis courts and well-kept cycling, jogging and hiking trails. Golf enthusiasts have only a short hop from the old town to the 18-hole golf course (covering 50 hectares), which is truly special due to its varied terrain and large number of water obstacles.

23–25 July 14th international balloon festival: PTUJ 2010; a traditional international meeting of balloonists to commemorate the municipal holiday.

Town of Hundred Delights and Fine Cellars

30 and 31 July “Ptujska polenta noč” (Ptuj summer night), as part of celebrations in honour of the Municipality of Ptuj; cultural and entertainment events in the streets and squares of the old town with a rich gastronomic offer.

Ptuj and its surroundings have always been famous for its excellent and historically diverse cuisine and excellent wines. In the past, they used to largely trade with wine and this tradition still lives in the town. Ptuj has the oldest wine cellar in Slovenia, which still keeps the oldest wine, Zlata trta (Golden Grapevine), from 1917. Ptuj’s thousand-year-old wine culture and tradition of wine production and nurture is a good reason to taste excellent traditional wines with a modern touch and full fruit flavour, from Ptujska klet (Ptuj Cellar) and wines from renowned wine producers from Slovenske Gorice and Haloze. Top the excellent drink of this area with traditional treats from the town pubs and the surrounding urban inns.

European Capital of Culture 2012 Ptuj is a partner city in the European Capital of Culture 2012 project, which is a great opportunity for a much-needed change in the awareness of the importance of Ptuj as a cultural jewel. 1–4 Jul Ana Desetnica 2010 – street theatre festival

Pho to: D. Wedam

The idea of a funicular railway connecting the old part of town and the Ljubljana castle is over a century old. The railway was finally constructed in 2006, providing a minute-long ride from the Šentjakob theatre to the castle walls as an alternative to a pleasant walk on one of the paths leading up to the castle. Riding in the glass cabin of the funicular railway is a unique and exciting experience.

The Prešernov trg square developed from a medieval crossroads at the entrance to the fortified town. In the 17th century, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation was built next to it, but the crossroads itself was not transformed and paved until the middle of the 19th century after the town walls were pulled down. After the great earthquake of 1895, new town palaces were built around the square: the Frisch and Seunig houses at the bottom of Čopova Street, the Central Pharmacy building (Centralna lekarna), later the Urbanc shop and Hauptmann house and thirty years after that the Mayer Palace (Mayerjeva palača). In the same period, the Filip Mansion (Filipov dvorec) and Kresija building were erected on the opposite bank of the Ljubljanica, designed by architect Leopold Theyer from Graz. With the building of Tromostovje (Three Bridges) by architect Plečnik, the square expanded across the river and gained its present appearance. Prešeren’s Monument, created by architect Maks Fabiani and sculptor Ivan Zajc, was unveiled in the autumn of 1905. The monument features Prešeren and, above him, his poetry muse holding a laurel branch. Symbolically, the statue of Prešeren’s love, Primičeva Julija, gazes at the poet from the facade of a house on the nearby Wolfova Street. Ljubljana is a city full of lovely and interesting bridges. It is conjectured that the first bridge across the Ljubljanica was built in Roman times, probably somewhere between the present-day bridges of Čevljarski most and Šentjakobski most. In medieval Ljubljana there were only two wooden bridges: the old bridge at the site of today’s Tromostovje, and Mesarski most in the place of today’s Čevljarski most. When, at the end of the 18th century, the defensive wall was pulled down, the danger of flooding was somewhat reduced by the Gruber Canal (1783), and the town expanded to the left riverbank. Several new bridges were built, mostly wooden at first, later replaced by metal, stone or Photo: Ljubljana Tourist Board concrete constructions. The present image of its tamed and concreted river bed was designed by architect Jože Plečnik. He planned the embankments and public walks with tree rows along the river, among them the romantic Trnovski pristan landing with weeping willows and a terraced promenade. He also created and renovated several bridges along the river. The square of Mestni trg was, from the 12th century onwards, one of the centres of the medieval town. After many of the medieval buildings had collapsed in the earthquake of 1511, they were replaced by Renaissance and later, baroque buildings, which still characterise the square today. The most famous of these is the Town Hall building. In front of it stands Robba’s fountain, created by Francesco Robba between 1743 and 1751.

Events

Mestni trg is characterised by a number of other interesting houses, among them the Haman house, which today houses the City Gallery; Lichtenberg’s house with a 1540 facade, decorated with reliefs by sculptor Osbalt Kittel and a mid-18th century stairway; the Skoberne house with a facade from the same period; the Rakovec and Obrez houses, designed by architect Matija Persky;

and the tallest among them, the Souvan house, with an Empire-style facade, embellished with reliefs representing art, trade and farming. It was designed by Francesco Coconi in the 17th century. Stari trg was the earliest settlement in the medieval town. It stretches out towards the square of Gornji trg, which slopes up to the foot of the castle hill (Grajski grič). Both squares, just as does Mestni trg square (all three comprising the core of the oldest, once medieval part of Ljubljana), skirt the foot of the castle hill with their distinctive garland shape. The facades of the houses facing the street are, just as in Mestni trg, mostly baroque, but their inner structure is medieval. Many of them were remodelled and simultaneously joined to the neighbouring buildings in the 17th and 18th centuries. Four houses encircling Gornji trg have preserved a medieval layout with their roof ridges pointing at the street. At the broadest point of Stari trg, where Gornji trg branches off, stands the fountain of Hercules (Herkulov vodnjak), a modern interpretation of the older baroque fountain. It is faced by the renowned mansion Stiški dvorec. A large part of the square was, right up to the end of the 18th century, occupied by the Jesuit College with the Church of St James. When the college building burned down, today’s Levstikov trg square emerged in its place. Gornji trg used to end near the present-day tunnel under the castle hill, where the town gates would arch over the road leading to the east or to the Dolenjska region. The centre of the square is distinctive for its baroque Church of St Florian, built after 1672.

The ZOO The Ljubljana Zoo offers the sight of a number of native and foreign animals in a natural environment. In addition to the many mammals and birds, the Zoo also houses reptiles, amphibians, insects, spiders and snails – 500 specimens, excluding insects. The Ljubljana Zoo is a member of EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. The Zoo staff organise several guided and supervised “animal adventures”, allowing you to pet certain animals, observe others in their aquatic environment and learn many interesting facts about them. The Zoo is open from 9:00 to 19:00 in the summer (JunAug) and 1 hour less every subsequent month until December.

Ljubljana Castle dominates the skyline of Slovenia’s capital. The foundations of the castle go back as far as the 9th century, although it wasn’t officially recorded in history books until 1144. For a long time it served as a governor’s residence and was later turned into a prison. It is now a museum, gallery and venue for various events and performances, as well as a popular tourist spot for panoramic views of the city.
