The Winning Formula The popularity of skiing among Slovenes is a logical consequence of their homeland’s natural conditions. The country boasts a number of hills and mountains and many ski slopes. And while none of Slovenia’s ski slopes could really be described as large there are many charming elements that can only be found at the sort of small and mid-sized resorts found here. Small hotels and cottages definitely win over large depersonalised lodging complexes where you literally get lost. Slovenia is a boutique country, and its skiing tourism follows that tradition. The country has never been ready to welcome a mass number of skiers – and nor does it aim to. Such a move would in any case be unsustainable. The environmental sensitivity of the small Slovenian world above 2000 metres has already sparked conflicts between winter tourism entrepreneurs and those who put respect for the virgin alpine nature above all else. For now, the most beautiful places to ski are available only for those who walk there while carrying skis on their back. Ski touring is alive and well in Slovenia. The “old” Slovenian winter tourism was focused on a domestic working class and offered skiing with simple lodging and food rather than cuisine. The current type of tourism, evolved over the past two decades, offers everything for everyone. As well as a wide variety of additional entertainment for skiers, Slovenia now has high-end hotels and cuisine alongside the more basic traditional accommodation. Those working in Slovenian winter tourism are well aware that they have a winning combination: skiing, wellness, good food and attractive side activities. To sum up, the formula of skiing in Slovenia goes like this: glorious surroundings, an array of activities and facilities, and a number of little pleasures that can only be found at smaller and medium sized resorts. What more could anyone looking for a dream winter break ask for? Jaka Terpinc, editor (editor@sloveniatimes.com)

Roads during winter Certain areas in Slovenia experience more severe winters, with temperatures reaching below zero and the occurrence of avalanches. Heavy snowstorms can obstruct traffic, but usually only for short periods. Within a day or two, the conditions on roads usually normalise, especially due to well-organised snow service. However, with sufficient winter equipment, generally all roads are driveable, even in snowy conditions, except the highest Slovenian mountain pass Vršič (1,611m), which can be closed due to the danger of avalanches. All information regarding road and traffic conditions: + 386 (0)1 418 85 18 Note: Required car equipment From 15th November to 15th March and/or during winter weather conditions, private cars and vehicles up to 3.5t must have winter equipment – winter tyres on all four wheels or summer tyres with snow chains in the car boot. In both cases, the minimum tyre tread depth must be at least 3mm. Vehicles over 3.5t must have winter tyres at least on the drive wheels or summer tyres on all four wheels with snow chains in the car boot.

Bovec

Winter in the Valleys of Inspiration For all of you who love active holidays far away from the hustle and bustle of big cities, Bovec is the right choice. Embraced by the snow-capped Julian Alps and the emerald beauty Soča, winter visitors experience the real winter here! A fairy-tale landscape, where Disney’s fairy tale The Chronicles of Narnia was shot, has lots to offer in the winter: skiing at the mountain ski resort with views of the sea, fairy-tale outings in snowshoes, building up form on cross country skies and joyful night sledging. History lovers can set out on discovering the traces of the First World War or visit the Trenta Museum in the picturesque Trenta Valley in Triglav National Park. One thing is for sure: your holidays in the Bovec region will be unforgettable!

History fans will not miss out on a guided tour to one of outdoor museums and numerous ruins or private collections on the life at the Soča front during the First World War. Furthermore, well worth visiting is also the Trenta Museum which houses a rich collection of ethnological heritage, cultural and historical artefacts of the Trenta Valley.

Where the Winter and Summer Blend Photo: Archive LTO Bovec, Leonardo Olmi

We offer you an absolutely unique experience, the experience of blending the winter and summer. In the last years, this type of holidays has been growing in popularity. In April or early May, you can spend your morning skiing at the Kanin-Sella Nevea ski resort, and the afternoon rafting or kayaking on the emerald beauty of the River Soča. Those of you who prefer walking, a guided tour will take you along the Soča trail into the heart of Triglav National Park, the Trenta Valley, where you will see plenty of fascinating natural and cultural sights, such as the picturesque Great Soča Gorge, quaint farms, fairytale hanging bridges, the Trenta Museum as well as majestic views of the surrounding peaks!

Discover the Snowy Countryside Covered in thick snow, the Alpine valleys of Loška Koritnica, Zadnjica, Zapoden, Lepena or Bavšica are the best places for discovering them in the most primeval way – by walking in our ancestors’ shoes, the “snowshoes”. The crunching of snow under your feet and snow covered trees are merely a part of this fairy-tale experience lead by experienced local guides.

Cross-Country Skiing When snow covers the valleys, crosscountry skiers are delighted at the number of prepared cross-country ski trails. The trails spread over the extensive Bovec airport including Rabeljk, the surroundings of the Čezsoča village as well as the embrace of the mighty Mangrt and Jalovec mountains and the picturesque Loška stena wall, Log pod Mangrtom and Loška Koritnica, where the winter scenery will definitely bewitch you. The network of cross-country ski trails is suitable both for beginners and more demanding cross-country skiers.

An organised sledging trip takes you down a prepared sledging track on Mangrtska Road, the Trenta Valley or down Mount Kobariški (Breginjski) Stol. Joy abounds for the young and adult sledge riders, setting out on this first-rate winter adventure during the day or at night in the torchlight! And after the trip? Well, without doubt, hot tea and one of homemade Bovec delicacies will be sought after. Besides, your stomachs could definitely find enough space for čompi and cottage cheese as well as delicious, sweet Bovec doughnuts.

Above the Clouds!

The highest ski resort in Slovenia became the first cross-border ski centre in Slovenia, enabling skiing in both Italy and Slovenia. The KaninSella Nevea resort is the only high-mountain ski resort in Slovenia with the trails over 2,000 meters above sea level and the only resort where the sunny weather allows you to see all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

Bongiorno!

Photo: Aleš Fevžer

Last season finally brought a highly expected cable car connecting Kanin with Sella Nevea in Italy, a slope at lower attitude, yet with many lengthy and diverse tracks. The joint ski slope has greatly extended the skiing experience, which now offers a total of twelve lifts and 30 kilometres of skiing trails, appropriate for both beginners and experienced skiers.

Photo: Peter Fettich

Skiing in a T-shirt As the upper Soča Valley awakes from its winter hibernation, the view towards the faraway ski slope of Kanin is awash with verdant greens, rich reds and browns and, of course, pure white snowfields. This slope is a place where the season won’t end before the May holidays. In April, you can still expect very thick snow cover.

Typical for the spring skiing is that as the sun reaches its peak, skiers decide for longer breaks at the “snow beach” next to the cable car’s top station. It is not difficult to give into the music, beer and the smell of herbal tea… It can easily be a prelude for the evening party time in one of the many bars and restaurants in Bovec.

Škofja Loka

Winter Joys in the Škofja Loka Region At the confluence of the rivers Poljanska and Selška Sora is situated the thousand year old city of Škofja Loka, which is well worth visiting on a fine, crisp winter day. The beauty of the ancient city is complemented by the Selška and Poljanska Valleys still preserving the rich tradition of old customs. In the summer months, the shelter of the Škofjeloško Hills offers you endless opportunities of spending your leisure time in an active way. However, there are a large number of things to do also in the autumn and winter time. Fine autumn days are still suitable for cycling, mountain climbing or visiting the underground fortifications of the Rupnik Line. And for the winter we have prepared plenty of snow fun for you.

On St. Gregory Eve, the Železniki tourism society invites you to a traditional celebration of the coming of spring called Put the Light in the Water. The purpose of this cultural and ethnological event, which takes place every year by the pond in front of Plnada, is to preserve the tradition from the iron-making times, when people wished to have a new sun and light brought by ever longer days. The youngest joyously launch their “Gregories” on the pond, wishing that the water would take away all bad things, worries and troubles of the cold days.

White December in the Old Town If lively colours prevail in Škofja Loka in the summer, the December days are gently white coloured, bringing a multitude of events as a part of the “White December”. Among other things, children can test their creativity at Saturday workshops, music fans can enjoy wonderful Škofja Loka Christmas musical performances, while others can enjoy a variety of activities in Mestni trg square at the end of December. The premier event in the square will be an outdoor New Year’s Eve party.

Meet the Oldtimers Every year the Rovtarji society organises the International Old Ski Race, which takes place on the Grajski hrib (Castle Hill) in the centre of Škofja Loka. The race’s unique location makes the Škofja Loka race the most popular and most visited race among all other similar races across Europe. You can watch the competitors as they parade the town. Then the skiers compete in different age groups in different disciplines.

Ride the Sledge For the daring, there is a new, breathtaking sledge track in the Stari Vrh ski resort, which will also offer night sledging in the torchlight. If we have a good winter, sledging will be organised also on the Mišouh sledge track in Praprotno.

Ice Climbing All of you, who also love climbing in winter, should go ice climbing in the Poljanska Valley. Weather permitting, members of the Gorenja vas caving club will take you ice climbing in Todraž, while in Žetina (on the Podrancka waterfall) you will be climbing in the company of members of the Škofja Loka climbing club. Here you can climb a naturally frozen waterfall or an artificial ice wall.

Stari Vrh

Old Peak, Modern Ski Slope Three Points About Stari Vrh

Firstly, it is only a 45-minute drive from Ljubljana. Technically speaking, it may not be the closest, but due to the fact you can ski right off the parking lot (not the case with Krvavec), it is definitely the place you can reach first. Secondly, the illuminated piste is something every advanced skier would want: long and dynamic. Thirdly, the new six-seat express lift takes you to the top in no time, meaning no freezing out there (the lift’s seats are heated) and no (or very short) waiting lines.

STC Stari Vrh, d.o.o. Zapreval 3, Poljane nad Škofjo Loko Phone: +386 (0)4 518 81 36 info@starivrh.si www.starivrh.si

Closest to Ljubljana, Stari Vrh represents a great solution for a daytrip or, even more interesting, for evening skiing on its illuminated slopes. This dynamic slope may not be one of the biggest resorts, but with its wide range of services and facilities, it can easily compete with others.

Info Altitude: 580 - 1.216 m Area: 55 ha Total tracks length: experts: 2 km medium: 6 km easy: 4 km Capacity: 6.000 skiers/h

Stari Vrh is a versatile place. It can satisfy both advanced skiers and beginners, although it is a bit more oriented towards the former. There’s a variety of other things for everyone: from children’s park to a cross county track. Lodging and food are a chapter of their own. Besides the obvious hot dogs and fries served on the slope, it would be a sin not to visit one of the surrounding inns or tourist farms.

Mariborsko Pohorje Mariborsko Pohorje Ljubljana 122 km

This Winter’s Place to Be Športni center Pohorje d.o.o. Mladinska ulica 29, Maribor Phone: +386 (0)3 581 44 14 tic.rogaska@siol.net www.pohorje.org

In the past few years, the Mariborsko Pohorje has evolved into one of the largest winter sports-recreational resorts in this part of Europe. For the coming winter, the enterprise Ĺ portni center Pohorje, the driving force of the Mariborsko Pohorje tourist development, has prepared a number of novelties that will definitely thrill skiers on Pohorje slopes.

The Golden Age The Pohorje winter resort was projected to fulfil the recreational needs of the huge population of workers residing in Maribor. In the socialist manner of “sports for all” skiing tracks as well as many residential buildings were established, while the greatest achievement of the time was the construction of the first chairlift in 1951, marking the beginning of Pohorje ski centre. The funicular, made in 1957, links the foothills, actually a part of Maribor to Bolfenk’s hotel Bellevue. Much volunteer work by the people of Maribor was involved in turning the slope of Pohorje into ski terrain. In its golden years, the seventies, more than 14,000 season tickets were sold annually.

The Mighty Vzpenjača The most important acquisition is the new lower terminal of Pohorska vzpenjača, a cable car that made its maiden ride before the opening of the last winter season. The completion of the new cable-car project will considerably raise the quality of transport on Mount Pohorje as well as the quality of skiing. The ski slopes linking the Pohorje’s summit and its foot rank at the top of Slovenia’s pistes. In addition, there is also a possibility of night skiing on 10 kilometres of lighted ski runs, which is the longest lighted ski area in Slovenia. A quality leap in the offer of Športni center Pohorje has begun in the 08/09 season when the Pisker six-person chairlift and the accompanying ski run were opened on the Areško Pohorje. Figures are astounding – in the last winter season, the chairlift to Pisker transported almost half of all skiers in this part of the mountain.

Alternatives to Skiing Skiing is, of course, not the only winter-time activity available there. Sledding and cross-country tracks can not be regarded as something you wouldn’t get elsewhere, but what are special are exotic activities such as a pležuh ride (a sort of monoski with a seat), snowshoe walks, balloon rides or a giant adrenaline swing.

Events 15 - 16 Jan Meet the Fox The 47th Golden Fox competition, a FIS World Cup in ladies’ slalom and giant slalom, is taking place in Snežni stadion (Snow Stadium). The predecessor of the Golden Fox Trophy was a FIS I-A competition, which had been organized annually from 1964, on a very steep and pretentious slope under the Bellevue hotel on the edge of Pohorje range. With only two exceptions, in 1998 and 2007 because of the lack of snow, the Golden Fox Trophy has been a competition with a tradition of over 40 years. In the 1980s, the competing line moved down where today’s Snežni stadium (snow stadium) is located. According to official FIS data, the Golden Fox Trophy annually attracts around 15 to 20 million TV spectators from all over the world. Another 20 thousand are encouraging the competitors alongside the competition line, which makes Golden Fox Trophy one of the most well-attended sport events in Slovenia.

A Slope of Many Pleasures The Mariborsko Pohorje is a synonym for snow pleasures. Let the sun and delicious Pohorje gastronomy spoil you on the terraces of the huts Cojzerica, Koča, Martinček, Luka and Trikotna jasa as well as on the sunny terrace of Hotel Arena. Moreover, more pampering awaits you in two wellness centres – in Hotel Arena and the Bolfenk mountain wellness centre, which a part of the Bolfenk hotel complex on Mount Pohorje. And why don’t you round off your skiing day with an exquisite dinner in Hotel Arena’s restaurant. The outstanding hotel offer of the hotels Arena and Bolfenk is complemented by Hotel Videc and the Bolfenk and Martin apartment complexes.

Ptuj

City of Culture The city of Ptuj has in its several thousand years of history seldom enjoyed its freedom inside the strict boundaries of the state. It has been influenced by many cultures and civilisations but nevertheless it has stayed the lighthouse of the spirit of enlightenment which enabled nations to achieve great material wealth. Because we are aware of the fact that all knowledge learned is threatened to be forgotten and that cultural tradition resists the sands of time we have to view Ptuj as a cultural gem which will be indispensable in the evolution of human society.

The City with Hundreds of Treasures The historical development has left Ptuj two monasteries and two magnificent churches. Reforms were not favourable to the Dominican monastery, and consequently the Dominicans no longer live here. Nowadays the monastery displays part of collections of the Ptuj–Ormož Regional Museum. One can view the archaeological collection, Mithras and the numismatic collection in the quiet surroundings of the old walls. The Minorite monastery which was built shortly after the Dominican monastery has retained its function up to the present day. It is especially interesting because of the Minorite library found in the monastery. The rooms host many outstanding exhibitions and cultural events and its arcade courtyard is the venue for many summer events in Ptuj. A part of the monastery is also the reconstructed church of St. Peter and Paul. The visitors taking a walk through the old city centre can also visit Church of St. George the church of St. George. The city parish church of St. George is the richest and most beautiful architectural monument of Ptuj from the 12th century. The outer walls feature Renaissance and Baroque headstones of the former cemetery. In close proximity to the church we can find the mighty City Tower and Orpheus Monument. The City Tower was mentioned in the first city statute from 1376. In 1830 the curate Simon Povoden ordered the ancient monuments he had discovered in Ptuj and the surrounding area to be built into the tower to protect them from ruin. This is how one of the oldest outdoor lapidaries was created. The Orpheus Monument is a Roman headstone, made from marble found in the Pohorje Massif, measuring almost 5 metres in height. The central part is the relief of the ancient singer Orpheus. In the Middle Ages it was used as a pillory. All those who are hungry for cultural events can see plays performed in the renewed theatre building of the Ptuj City Theatre, browse through well-stacked book collections at the Ivan Potrč Library in Mali grad, or see permanent and temporary exhibitions at the Mihelič Gallery as well as visit other city museums and galleries.

Bull carrier

Ptuj Castle Because of its strategic position the castle mound has been inhabited since antiquity. The present-day castle is the result of many reconstructions and additions built throughout the centuries. The collections of the Ptuj–Ormož Regional Museum are on display in Ptuj Castle. The material is available in the form of permanent exhibitions: the collection of feudal housing culture, collection of weapons, collection of musical instruments, castle gallery, collection of traditional carnival masks, ethnological collection and temporary exhibitions.

A Long History A short historical overview beginning with the Stone Age through the Bronze and Iron Ages tells us that Ptuj is definitely one of the richest cultural treasuries in the European area. After the fall of the Noric province the city was settled by Romans who transformed it into the biggest military, political, administrative and economic centre which in the 2nd and 3rd century AD had twice the inhabitants of the present city. Numerous written sources and rich cultural heritage preserved to this day testify to the greatness of the spiritual and material creativity in the Middle Ages. Apart from the rich material and cultural heritage Ptuj also has a great richness of non-material cultural heritage preserved mostly in numerous traditional events. One of the most important cultural events is without doubt the festival “Kurentovanje” which is the biggest ethnographic carnival in Europe. Although the city of Ptuj is small in the geographical sense, it has a vast multicultural past which promises an inexhaustible multicultural future.

A City of Hundreds of Delicacies and Noble Cellars

European Capital of Culture 2012

Ptuj and its surroundings have always been well known for their excellent, historically conditioned culinary delights and excellent wines. The wine trade was wide spread in the past and is still alive in the city today because Ptuj stands on the oldest wine cellar in Slovenia which stores the oldest wine “Zlata trta” (“Golden Vine”) from 1917. A thousand year old wine culture and the tradition of growing and cultivating wine in the Ptuj region are good reasons to taste the excellent traditional wines with a modern touch and a full fruity flavour from the Ptuj wine cellar as well as wines of renowned wine producers from the Slovenjske Gorice and Haloze hills. The noble wines from this region are finely complemented with traditional delicacies served by pubs in the city and its environs.

Ptuj is a partner city in the project EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2012 which is a great opportunity to change the view on the importance of Ptuj as a cultural gem. Ptuj’s central programme is the ART&HERITAGE CARNIVAL with a variety of cultural events connected with the wealth of non-material cultural heritage of our environment and the uniqueness of ethnographic heritage. The European Capital of Culture is also a great opportunity to change and upgrade the cultural infrastructure.

The City of Health and Well-being Ptuj is a unique city in Slovenia, combining more than two thousand years of tradition with a health and well-being offer. A holiday at Terme Ptuj Spa is the source of health and relaxation as well as an excellent opportunity for the active spending of free-time and enjoying bubbly water games. Terme Ptuj is one of the youngest health resorts in Slovenia offering accommodation in categorised apartments and bungalows of various sizes, camping as well as accommodation in the new four-star hotel Grand Hotel Primus. The thermal park with internal and external baths covers 4200 m2 of water surfaces with mineral water that has healing properties. Moreover, it is also renowned for the biggest slide in Slovenia. Sports enthusiasts can use several recreation grounds, the majority of which are tennis courts, as well as wellmaintained cycling, running and hiking tracks. Just a stone’s throw away from the old city centre, golfers can enjoy a golf course with 18 holes, which is really unique because of its varied terrain and a large number of water barriers. It covers more than 50 hectares of greens and water.

The River Drava and Lake Ptuj – the Area of Natura 2000 The River Drava and Lake Ptuj offer plenty of enjoyable water activities, such as sailing, rowing, riding motor boats and scooters as well as panoramic voyages in the boat in the summer time. They also provide a good tourist offer in the winter. You can go for a stroll around the lake and enjoy views of the rich habitat of rare and protected species of birds. The River Drava and Lake Ptuj are one of more important sites for birds in Europe and rank among the areas of Natura 2000. Although Lake Ptuj is an artificial lake, it provides a refuge for huge numbers of water birds in the winter. Between November and March, it is the habitat for several thousand water birds. In some years the number of birds in the lake area can come close to twenty thousand. The number of birds starts to increase in October and reaches its peak in the middle of winter. In March, when the number of birds drops, the lake is home only to species which nest here.

A part of the Festive Fair has been moved to Breg embankment, thus extending the venue of the festive December and creating a “festive promenade” from Ljubljana’s Central Market across Prešernov trg square and along Cankarjevo nabrežje embankment to Breg embankment. The traditional fair offer is complemented by the Festive Book Fair in Mestni trg square. The venue of street theatres has also been moved, and this year the performances will entertain you on Mesarski most / Butchers’ Bridge. Furthermore, in Novi trg square the magic December atmosphere is livened up by the Power of Will project, a video visualisation in large urban areas, mingling video and sound energy. In front of the building on 22 Breg, a Zoetrope has been set up. Looking like a big hat when viewed in the distance, the Zoetrope contains pictures that come to life when you spin it. In the Town Hall’s courtyard you can view a bit modified and therefore even more interesting crib, while in front of the Town Hall the Good Fairy has come back, ready to fulfil your secret wishes. Moreover, organ-grinders create special charm in the old city centre. This year, the Festive Christmas Concert is staged in Prešernov trg square, and other novelties are music and children programmes as well as the New Year’s Eve party in Novi trg square. So, the New Year’s Eve party includes five locations: Prešernov, Novi, Mestni and Pogačarjev squares as well as Križanke. There are plenty of reasons why you should join the festive atmosphere in the capital’s city centre.
