• Appointment of Ernst & Young as the External Auditors for 1996 At the end of the Annual General Meeting, the President gave the first Presidential address. In his speech the President informed the meeting that the first few months after its establishment the Academy was preoccupied with the establishment aspects. The Academy was also able to organise the Inauguration Dinner of the Academy and an International Round Table discussion . The President also highlighted some of the areas on which the Academy will focus its attention, such as: • Providing advice to Government on matters relating to science, engineering and technology which are of national importance • Fostering a culture of excellence in science and technology in Malaysia.

Following the adoption of the 7r' Malaysia Plan (1996 - 2000) by Parliament in July 1996, the Acadeno.t organised a Workshop themed "Harnessing Science and Technology for the Seventh Malaysia Plan", on 2 - 3 August 1996. The Workshop was officially opened by YB Dattrk Law Hieng Ding, Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment and attracted participation from a large and diver egroup encompassing policy makers, representatives fi-om various Ministries with portfolios related to science, engineering and technology, S.E.T. professional associations, Fellows of the Academy, as well as representatives from the private sector comprising industrialists and bankers. Overseas participants representing various Academies of Sciences and Engineering fi-om A SEAN countries, China, Japan and South Korea as well as from the Commonwealth Partnership for Technology Management (CPTM) also attended the Workshop.

Bengkcl ini dikendalikan oleh Puan Doric Giles, Manager, Educational Activities dari IEE. Dua puluh orang guru sains sekolah rendah yang dipilih telah menghadiri bengkel ini. Perbincangan tertumpu kepada pertukaran idea mengenai alat bantuan mengajar tersebut dan samada iany a sesuai untuk kegunaan sckolah-sekolah rendah di Malaysia. Pihak CDC akan menilai dan melaporkan kepada pihak Akademi dan IEE.

On 4`1 November 1996 a workshop was organised with the collaboration of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) U.K. and Curriculum Development Centre (CDC), Ministry of Education Malaysia, primarily to introduce the IEE resources in science teaching for primary schools.

The

workshop was conducted by Mrs Dorie Giles, Manager, Educational Activities of IEE. Twenty selected prim arry school science teachers attended this workshop and discussions were focussed on

the IEE teaching kits, and

wheather they were suitable for primary schools in Malaysia. CDC will evaluate the findings and report to the Academy and IEE.

Parnaby dan Sctiausaha, Dr J.C. Williams telah diadakan di Kuala Lumpur untuk membincangkan bentuk kerjasama yang boleh dirancangkan untuk masa akan datang diantara ASM dan IEE. Melalui mesvuarat ini, kedua-dua pihak bersetuju bekcrjasama dalam menjavakan produksi "A is/aysian (local) Faraday Lecture". Syarahan Malaysia ini akan berpandukan kcpada model IEF. Akademi Sains Malaysia dan Akademi Sains Uzbekistan telah mengariskan beberapa bidang yang boleh kedua-dua pihak bekerjasama. Kedua-dua Akademi juga bersetuju untuk melakukan pertukaran program di antara saintis Malaysia dan Uzbekistan meliputi bidang astronomi, matematik, teknologi laser, sains gunaan, perubatan, nuklear dan laser fizik. ASM juga bersetuju untuk mcnaja pakar-pakar sains Uzbekistan untuk datang ke Malaysia dan mcmberikan syarahan atau menjadi perunding di dalam bidang kritikal dan area strategik yang diperlukan oleh negara untuk meningkatkan pembangunan sains, kejuruteraan dan teknologi.

From 27r' October to 2" November 1996, delegation comprising Tarr Sri Datirk Dr OrricrrAbd. Rahman FA.Sc., President of the Academy, Dr Al. K. Rajakirmar; I -A.Sc. lice-Presidentof the Academy, Professor Dr Shaharir,llohd Zairr I?A.Sc. Fellow of the Academy and Dr Samsudin Tugiman, Executive Director of the Academy went on a joint official visit together with Malaysian ILndustg,-Government Group for Technology (MIGHT) to the Republic of Uzbekistan. The objectives of the visit were study R & D activities of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of U^,,bekistan and to explore potential areas of co-or poration between the two academies. Institutions that the delegation visited were The Academe of Sciences Uzbekistan, The Institute of Polymer Chemistry and Ph}ysics, Institute of Nuclear Physics, The Institute of Electronics, the Institute of Bio-organic Chemistry, illinistry of Health, Tashkent State Technical Univer:rity, Ministry of Higher Education arid Laser Technology Department. Through this visit the Academy of Sciences Alalcrysia and the, I cadeniy of Sciences L'Zbekistan were able to define possible areas of collaboration, and and ageraerallllenzorzrnduin of Understanding was signed between the two Academies. Both Academies also agreed to initiates all exchange programme between scientists in Alalcryysia and Uzbekistan covering the areas of astronomer, mathematics, laser techrnolog , materials science, medicine, unclear and laser-physics. A SM11 also agreed to sponsor top scientists from LJZbekistan to come to .Malaysia to give lectures or become consultants in critical and strategic areas that the county y needs to propel its dee'elopinent in science, engineering avid technology.

KUNJUNGAN MENTERI SAINS DAN TEKNOLOGI, BRAZIL VISIT BYH.E. MINISTER OF SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY BRAZIL Yang Berbahagia Dr Israel Vargas, Menteri Sains dan Teknologi, Brazil, yang juga President Akademi Sains Negara-negara Dunia Ketiga (TWAS) menemui Presiden Akademi Sains Malaysia, YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Dr Omar Abdul Rahman, di pejabat Tan Sri dijabatan Perdana Menteri untuk membincangkan bentuk kerjasama yang mungkin dapat dibentuk diantara kedua-dua akademi termasuk program pertukaran pakar sains. Perbincangan juga berkisar mengenai cara-cara yang terbaik untuk mengeratkan hubungan diantara masyarakat rains diantara kedua-dua negara terutamanya dalam bidang sains, kejuruteraan, teknologi, pertanian, penyelidikan, biodiversiti dan teknologi angkasa lepas.

The discussion also centred upon strengthening of linkages between the scientific communities of the two countries in the areas of science, engineering, technology, agricultural research, biodir.'ersity and space technology.

KUNJUNGAN DARI VA YASAN PENYELIDIKAN JERMAN VISIT BY GERMAN RESEARCH FOUNDATION Pada 31 Januari 1996, wakil dari Yayasan Penvelidikan Jerman (DFG) melakukan kunjungan balas ke Akademi Sains Malaysia setelah pihak Akademi melawat DFG atas jemputan Parlimen Jerman pada bulan September 1995. Tiga wakil DFG terdiri daripada Encik Bukharat Muller, Setiausaha Agung, Profesor Werner Gocht dan Encik Jost Gert Glombitza telah menemui Presiden AkademiYBhgTan Sri Datuk Dr Omar Abdul Rahman, F.A.Sc., YBhg Tan Sri Dato' Ir Shahrizaila Abdullah, F.A.Sc., Bendahari Kehormat Akademi, YBhg Profesor Dato' Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim, F.A.Sc. Ahli Majlis Akademi dan Dr SamsudinTugiman, Pengarah Eksekutif Akademi. Melalui perbincangan, DFG dan ASM bersetuju untuk mengujudkan kerjasama dua-hala dalam bidang sains, kejuruteraan dan teknologi yang mana ianya dapat mengerat dan memperkukuhkan bidang ini di kedua-dua negara.

KUNJUNGAN DARI AKADEMI SAINS UZBEKISTAN VISIT FROMACADEMY OF SCIENCES UZBEKISTAN Pada 26 April 1996, Profesor Dr Kadyr Gulamov, Ketua Setiausaha Sains Uzbekistan dan Profesor Adulaev, Presiden Akademi Sains Uzbekistan telah menemui YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Dr Omar Abdul Rahman, F.A.Sc. Presiden Akademi Sains Malaysia, Dr Samsudin Tugiman, Pcngarah Eksckutif Akadcmi dan Puan Sheriffah Noor Khamseah Al-Idid Pengawai Sains Akademi. Tujuan utama lawatan ini adalah untuk mcmbuat kunjungan balas kepada lawatan terdahulu yang telah dibuat oleh Ahli Sains 1vIalaysia. Dalarn perbincangan ini, Prof Gulamov menyatakan minat Akademi Sains Uzbekistan untuk me-,vujudkan kerjasama dengan Akademi Sains Malaysia. Mereka juga mengambil kesempatan ini untuk menjemput YBhg Tan Sri Omar dan ahli-ahli akademi untuk melawat Tashkent dan berjumpa dengan pengawai-pengawai Akademi Sains Uzbekistan untuk berbincang lebih lanjut mengenai kerjasama dan hubungan dua-hala diantara kedua-dua akademi ini.

Sibiya, Pengerusi Akademi Sains dan Kejuruteraan Afrika Selatan merangkap Penasihat Khas kepada Menteri Kebudayaan dan Sains dan Teknologi Afrika Selatan .
