Once again, on behalf of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, I am pleased to present the Annual Report of the Academy for the year 1997.

Sekali lagi, bagi pihak Akademi Sains Malaysia, saya dengan sukacitanya membentangkan Laporan Tahunan Akademi bagi tahun 1997. Penilaian aktiviti sepanjangtahun ini, Akademi meneruskan usaha kearah mencapai matlamat untuk mencapai, menggalak serta meningkatkan kecemerlangan dalam bidang sains, kejuruteraan dan teknologi.

For the year under review, the Academy continued its efforts towards achieving its objective that is the pursuit, encouragement and maintenance of excellence in the fields of science, engineering and technology.

Pada tahun 1997 banyak aktiviti telah dijalankan oleh Akademi sejajar dengan 4 bidang utama seperti: •

The Academy's Second Annual General Meeting was held on 26t1' April 1997 at the Academy's office building. The meeting approved the election of 6 new Fellows who represent another contribution of rich talent to the Academy. The Academy aims to continue to use the enormous wealth of knowledge and experience possessed by its Fellows.

The meeting also announced with profound sorrow the demise of two Fellows - YBhg. Tan Sri Dato' Halaluddin Mohd Ishak F.A.Sc. and YBhg. Prof. Dr. Ang Kok Jee F.A.Sc. The membership of the Academy at the end of 1997 stood at 60.

A significant event in 1997 was the Seminar "ASEAN Science and Technology Vision : Towards Technologically CompetentASEAN" which was held from 8th to 10'", of December 1997 at Legend Hotel , Kuala Lumpur. The seminar was attended by 160 representatives from ASEAN Academies of Science , Engineering and Technology and Similar National Science, Engineering and Technology organisations as well as representatives of professional scientific, engineering and technology associations and senior officials from relevant countries in ASEAN and China , Japan, India and South Korea . The Seminar was supported by Telekom Malaysia Bhd and ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology (COST).

Akaderni Sains Malaysia telah dijemput untuk menyertai bengkel mengenai "Antarctic Science Beyond 2000" bermula pada 16-18 April 1997. Akademi telah diwakili oleh Dato' Dr. Salleh Mohd Nor F.A.Sc. Fellow/Ahli Majlis Akademi.

Sebagai susulan bengkel tersebut, suatu laporan telah disediakan oleh Akaderni Sains Malaysia bertajuk "Malaysia and Antarctica :A Proposal on Malaysia's Involvement in the Antarctica" untuk diserahkan kepada pihak Kerajaan melalui Kementerian Sains Teknologi dan Alam Sekitar. Laporan itu secara dasarnya menguatkan lagi pendirian Kerajaan Malaysia mengenai Antartika sebagai "global common" dan mencadangkan Malaysia perlu melibatkan diri secara aktif dan menyumbang terhadap pengetahuan global mengenai Antartika. Laporan ini rnencadangkan Malaysia untuk membentuk suatu program penyeliclikan mengenai Antartika. Kerajaan New Zealand kemudian menjemput secara rasmi Kerajaan Malaysia untuk seorang Menteri Kanan melawat Antartika. Pada 13 14 November 1997, tiga ahli delegasi terdiri daripada YB Dato' Ling Leong Sik, Menteri Pengangkutan Malaysia, En Ghulam Husein bin Ghularn Haniff, Penolong Ketua Setiausaha, Kementerian Luar Negeri dan Dato' Dr. Salleh Mohd Nor F.A.Sc. mewakili Akademi Sains Malaysia telah melakukan lawatan rasmi ke Antartika. Laporan lawatan rasmi telah disediakan oleh YBhg Dato' Dr. Salleh Mohd Nor F.A.Sc.

Following the workshop, a report was prepared by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia entitled "Malaysia and the Antarctica : A Proposal on Malaysia's Involvement in the Antarctica" for submission to the Malaysian government through the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment. The report basically reinforced further the Malaysian government's stand on Antarctica as a "global common" and it also suggested that Malaysia should be actively involved in and contribute towards the global knowledge of understanding the Antarctica. The report proposed that Malaysia develop a programme of research on Antarctica. The New Zealand Government then extended an official invitation to the Malaysian Government for a senior member of the Government to visit Antarctica. From 13111 to 1411 November 1997, a three member delegation comprising YB Dato' Seri Dr. Ling Liong Sik, the Minister of Transport Malaysia, Encik Ghulam Hussein bin Ghulam Haniff, Principal Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dato' Dr. Salleh Mohd Nor F.A.Sc. representing the Academy of Sciences Malaysia went on a first official visit to the Antarctica.
