HAMMERHEAD WETSUITS This is one of my first design projects. The challenge was to create a fictional company, any company you want. It involved creating their logo, along with magazine and newspaper ads. My first choice was a clothing company called “Adam and Eve. That did not work out so well. That semester I was really into scuba diving and while I was looking into wetsuits, I came up with the idea of making a wetsuit company. I wanted to create a brand that belongs to its element. Therefore Hammerhead Wetsuit was born. Hammerhead sharks hunt in school; and when you wear Hammerhead wetsuit, you become part of the family.

carter county cycling I had the hardest time working on this project. For some reason, whenever I was working on the different parts of this project, my brain would refuse to cooperate with me. However, I was glad that I finally got through it and was able to learn from it. I wanted CCC to project cycling as a lifestyle, not just a way to commute.

BIT-CON Bit-con is a retro/arcade gaming conference. I have featured some of the challenges that were given, including a postcard, brochure, and newsletter. When designing this project, I wanted to illustrate the idea of the fun in gaming without being too chessy, colorful, and most importantly, nerdy. Therefore, I have chosen two vibrant, contrasting hues. I created a custom typeface for the logo to represent the “blocky feel of retro games.

ideogames can change a person’s brain and, as researchers are finding, often that change is for the better. A growing body of university research suggests that gaming improves creativity, decision-making and perception. The specific benefits are wide ranging, from improved handeye coordination in surgeons to vision changes that boost night driving ability.
four that someone can normally keep in mind, said University of Rochester researchers. The studies were conducted independently of the companies that sell video and computer games.
“practiced game players can pay attention to more than six things at once without getting confused”
People who played action-based video and computer games made decisions 25% faster than others without sacrificing accuracy, according to a study. Indeed, the most adept gamers can make choices and act on them up to six times a second—four times faster than most people, other researchers found. Moreover, practiced game players can pay attention to more than six things at once without getting confused, compared with the
Electronic gameplay has its downside. Brain scans show that violent videogames can alter brain function in healthy young men after just a week of play, depressing activity among regions associated with emotional control, researchers at Indiana University recently reported. “Videogames change your brain,” said University of Wisconsin psychologist C. Shawn Green, who studies how electronic games affect abilities. So does learning to read, playing the piano, or navigating the streets of London, which have all been shown to change...

s a child I had a relatively strict upbringing. Right up until the age of fifteen the concepts of right and wrong were drilled into me. That’s not to say that I had an unhappy childhood (quite the opposite, in fact), but while my friends came home from school and set fire to each other, I was instead sat in front of my TV quietly watching cartoons and being generally angelic. As a child, your relationship with your parents is crucial to your development as a human being. My parents instilled in me the belief that your elders were to be respected and their opinions were to be valued, meaning that when they told me that swearing was something that a 7-year-old shouldn’t be doing, I upheld their belief regardless of how many of my peers informed me otherwise.
Retro Gamers Still Gather To Get Their Game On on Mobido remembers playing chirpy old video games on his 16-bit Super Famicom game console like it was yesterday. Come to think of it, it very nearly was. “I just played Donkey Kong all day long,” says Mobido, 35. Mobido still buys games for his Super Famicom, which is the Japa-

I do not believe that kids playing “mature” video games is a bad thing.
I was playing violent video games throughout my preadolesence, with my parents’ acknowledgment. Because of their strict morals, I recognised that them allowing me to uppercut three pints of blood out of a ninja’s face in Mortal Kombat was a sign that they trusted my level of maturity and, unlike most parents those days, didn’t suspect that me playing a video game with blood in it would ultimately lead to me ending up on the evening news.
a socially reclusive basement-dweller, or whether the violence is going to cause him to turn him into an axe-murderer in the future, because all of the other kids he goes to school with are playing them, too. This lack of irrational fear is good to some degree, but it has also led to parents becoming apathetic when it comes to their children playing violent video games and conversing with strangers online, and that’s very, very bad.
Today, video games are a lot more popular and a lot more socially acceptable than they once were. When a kid spends his spare time playing on his Xbox 360, no one worries whether he’s getting enough fresh air, or whether he’s going to become
Parents now let their kids lock themselves away in their bedrooms, giving themselves some respite from their parental responsibilities by allowing their offspring to pick up their virtual AK47’s and shoot their friends via Xbox Live. This
“As a parent, it is your responsibility to contextualise what your child is seeing, not to prohibit them from seeing it”
lack of communication with their mom and dad is what is ultimately harmful to the child, not the violent video game that they are playing. Regardless of how much of a steely grip you keep on your child, you can’t prevent them from seeing things that you wouldn’t necessarily want them to see. As a parent, it is your responsibility to contextualise what your child is seeing, not to prohibit them from seeing it. If they want to play Assassin’s Creed III and you forbid them from doing so, they’ll play it at a friend’s house. An individual’s childhood is defined by their first glimpses of adulthood, whether it be sneaking downstairs in order to watch a gory horror movie, or whether it be playing Black Ops II. You can’t always shelter them from these experiences, but you can ensure that they understand the difference between reality and fiction. All you have to do is talk to them.

etro games continue to jostle for attention with glossy modern blockbusters, demonstrating that there is still as much interest in simple, accessible gameplay as there is in photorealistic 100-hour long adventures. But there is another take on the retro genre, one in which completely new ideas combine with retro models to take games in unique and intriguing directions. Take newly released PS3 and PS Vita music game Sound Shapes. Utterly modern and brimming with fresh ideas, it’s anything but dated and yet its smart combination of 2D platforming gameplay and interactive audio offers a distinct sense of gaming’s past. Allowing players to create music through interaction, it is visually brilliant, witty and varied. Over on the Nintendo DS and 3DS, Flip the Core offers more classically formed retro in the shape

The Bit-Con Gaming Expo 2012 has ended. On behalf of the organizers we’d like to extend a sincere thanks to all of our attendees, volunteers, speakers, vendors and to the Javits Center for an event that exceeded our expectations in every way! of a scrolling 2D shooter. The modern twist here? The 2D world is but the skin of a 3D environment, allowing the player to shift perspective, with the action then continuing in 2D. Finally, a level deeper into obscurity, late-70s games maker Leo Christopherson, who made his
name on a computer called the TRS-80, has just remade his classic Android Nim for PC and Mac. The 2012 version of this abstract action game, available from its author’s website, is certainly a curio, but one that is incredibly addictive and that may offer gamers a gateway to the eccentric fringes of retro gaming.

Continued from “The Game Isn’t Over Yet for Retro Gamers” PlayStation. And like they did so many years ago, retro gamers still gather to get their game on - be it at special conventions such as the Classic Gaming Expo in Las Vegas or specialty stores such as Game Over Videogames, a Texas-based chain where regulars like Mobido buy, sell and trade their old electronic adventures. “There’s always that place and time where it takes you back to when you were a kid,” says Game Over CEO and president David Kaelin. “In a bigger sense, I would say that retro gaming in general has gotten a lot bigger.”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with their dazzling graphics and sprawling environments, retro titles still entertain with far less eye candy and far more straightforward gameplay. Not that straightforward translates to easy. “A lot of the older games are brutal,” says gamer Eddie Minter, 32, who works for the state in the environmental sector. Minter says the newer games bore him with unnecessary complexity and information overload. He prefers older games for their “simple formula.” Still, that simplicity also plays well with today’s game systems. Repurposing old console games into new packaging is nothing new. For instance, JAKKS Pacific offers Yars’ Revenge and nine other Atari classics all in one replica joystick you plug straight into your TV, no cartridges or console required. Then there’s the return of Intellivision games from the early ‘80s to today’s PlayStations and Xboxes, PCs and Macs.
Continued from “When Gaming Is Good for You” ...the brain’s physical structure. The powerful combination of concentration and rewarding surges of neurotransmitters like dopamine strengthen neural circuits in much the same the way that exercise builds muscles. But “games definitely hit the reward system in a way that not all activities do,” he said.
Keith Robinson, a former game designer for Intellivision during its ‘80s heyday, created an Intellivision history website in 1995 that led to Intellivision Productions a few years later. He’s since brought the Intellivision experience from the TV screen to the touchscreen with an iPhone and iPad app, plus more than 60 Intellivision games in one for the Nintendo DS and PC. “It’s just exciting,” Robinson says. “Like I say, originally it was nostalgia. But a new generation, we find, loves these games. ... The kids pick it up, and they want to play these games. We have more people playing (Intellivision) today than they played then.”
Houston store manager Brandon Boucher sees everyone from hard-core gamers in search of import titles to casual passers-by who saw the Atari joystick logo outside and had to poke their heads in to see the real thing. “It’s actually been people from the entire spectrum,” Boucher says.
Yes, that includes these gamers today with their high-def consoles, wireless headsets and downloadable content.
While nostalgia certainly plays a big role in retro gaming, you can’t beat the price either. Unlike today’s games, which usually retail for $60, classic console titles at Game Over run as little as $2, with many original consoles on sale for $50 to $70. “That’s the best part of the retro scene - now you can afford all that stuff you missed,” Mobido says. And unlike today’s video game opuses such as Batman: Arkham City and

when he was that age. If parents can share their first thimble ride on a Monopoly board, why not also their first jaunt with Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom?
“We definitely see some of each,” Kaelin says of retro gamers young and old. “It’s a fun, family-friendly gaming community.”
Almost any computer game appears to boost a child’s creativity, researchers at Michigan State University’s Children and Technology Project reported in November. A three-year study of 491 middle school students found that the more children played computer games the higher their scores on a standardized test of creativity—regardless of race, gender, or the kind of game played. The researchers ranked students on a widely used measure called the Torrance Test of Creativity, which involves such tasks as drawing an “interesting and exciting” picture from a curved shape on a sheet of paper, giving the picture a title, and then writing a story about it.

lunar new year Every Chinese kid loves Lunar New Year (a.k.a. Chinese New Year). It’s a time for family reunions and fellowship. Plus they receive tons of money from all the elders they visit. The year 2013 is the year of Snake in the Lunar calendar. When designing the snake, I was going for a ferocious approach... just kidding, the snake is friendly. I portrayed the spirit of festivity with my choice of colors, while still incorporating red—the traditional Chinese color of happiness. The circle motif on the background is the shape of the ancient Chinese coin.

For the poster, I chose to use the national bird/emblem of Indonesia. The “body” text is the national anthem of Indonesia. The banner text—bhinneka tunggal ika, means “unity in diversity”.

10 Principles For Gaining & Maintaining Church Momentum Oh what an exhilarating ride momentum can be! Just like the adrenaline of an amusement park ride, the ebb and flow of a giant roller coaster – when you are riding momentum it seems like ‘anything could happen and it probably will!’ Momentum speeds up progress and propels you forward in a way best described in the Amplified Bible’s definition of the word ‘blessed’: “Blessed, happy, fortunate, and to be envied!” Momentum is a friend to every leader who is consumed with the cause of Christ and His Church. Conversely, a lack of momentum is the catalyst of great frustration and duress, and often produces striving or disillusionment - neither of which will ever lead to momentum. It is at times like these that the frustration we feel over lack of momentum is only exacerbated by acquaintances or peers who make it all look so easy as they ride on the wings of the momentum we so desperately crave. The combination of the particular challenge and my personal flair will create something that is pleasing, to the senses and the mind, aesthetically.
