PROPERTY

Memory Lane Eynsford Hill, Eynsford - £1,850,000 Eynsford Hill is a magnificent pre First World War residence built in 1913. It is constructed of rendered brick under a tiled roof with lead light windows and mullion surrounds. It was built without any expense spared and is virtually unaltered retaining a host of superb original features. Of all the rooms in the house the library/study is the most special. Arthur Mee wrote nearly 200 books here. It is sumptuously fitted with a range of oak bookshelves and secret drinks cabinet. It is divided into two with an alcove enclosing the mantelpiece and copper fireplace. The history of the construction of the property and of Arthur Mee’s life is extremely well documented in both photographs and prose and a host of memorabilia remains within the ownership of the property. A time capsule is buried near the front door and throughout the gardens historical artefacts such as Roman tiles are built into the paths and walls. The house is approached up a long sweeping tarmac drive (shared with adjoining property), edged with flint faced bank, through a delightful avenue of limes before culminating in a very large parking area in front of the house with separate access to a further area in front of the garages. A separate branch runs along the side of the paddock. The gardens are a stunning feature of the house. They comprise many different areas of lawns, terraces and copious use of beautiful low brick and stone balustrades and pathways with descending steps to what was once the tennis lawn and is now a croquet lawn. On the front lawn is a splendid round pond. There are wonderful herbaceous borders, magnificent shrubs and trees including an undulating yew hedge with topiary and a rose arbour walk. The formal area blends into the orchard and paddock (with two somewhat dilapidated buildings being former stables and timber store) and on the north east side of the property is a belt of beautiful bluebell woodland. AC159 - Upper Ifold House_Aspect County 18/11/2011 14:40 Page 1

PROPERTY

Tudor Character Upper Ifold House, Dunsfold - £2,400,000 Upper Ifold House dates from about 1580, home to a Tudor glass maker. It is understood that some of his original leaded lights remain. By the last century, it had become the manor house of a prosperous estate in unspoilt countryside. It lies at the centre of a hamlet, with several smaller houses providing security and comfort. Over the past decade, it has been comprehensively restored and modernised the Grade II listed building and its surrounds. The house has great character with a wealth of exposed timber and impressive open fireplaces. The principal rooms all enjoy a fine outlook over the gardens and grounds. Features of interest include the vaulted first floor landing with exposed rafters and a pull to the bell tower. A “secret” staircase links the ground floor, master bedroom suite, and the second floor attic bedroom, which was once a little cinema. All the main bedrooms are generously proportioned. There is a self-contained cottage wing, with the flexibility to have one or two bedrooms. It has its own entrance with access along one of the secondary driveways. The house enjoys several acres of secluded gardens and grounds. The formal gardens include a terrace overlooking the meadow with its parade of mature oak trees which gently descend to the riverbank, marking the boundary of the property. Gertrude Jekyll was employed by a previous owner, Lady Cynthia Mosley, to re-design the gardens nearly a century ago and traces can still be discerned, notably in the York stone terraces and the oak framed summerhouse, ideal for outdoor dining. The lawn by the summerhouse is edged by a ha-ha, beyond which lies the wild garden and including an area suitable for a tennis court. A path leads to the entrance of a woodland walk, which carries down to the riverbank. In all there are 7.3 acres. For more information contact Hamptons International on 01483 572864.

Far East & Middle East Art Egyptian and Chinese works feature this month at Gorringes The last sale of the year promises to provide a Grande Finale to 2012. Alongside some excellent pieces of jewellery and silver and a good selection of wines and vintage port, Gorringes are offering a fine collection of Chinese jades that belonged to Hetty Kinnon, lady-inwaiting to Lady Shaftesbury in the first half of the 20th century. The collection is worth between £40,000 and £60,000 in total and includes many beautifully carved pieces. A particular highlight is an 18th/19th celadon green jade incense burner and cover finely carved with Chi dragons which carries an estimate of £20,000-30,000. Also of note is an 18th century celadon carving of a mythical beast which has an estimate of £6,000-8,000. The quality of the carving is impeccable and the even tone of the stone makes it highly appealing to collectors. While items from the Far East have dominated the art & auction market this year, the Middle East is fast catching up. Several London auction houses already hold sales in Dubai and are achieving record prices for Middle Eastern artists there. An important work by the acclaimed Egyptian artist Tahia Halim (1919-2003) is to be sold at Gorringes in the December sale and has an estimate of £25,000-30,000. Evoking images of this year s Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East, Demonstration depicts a rioting crowd being beaten back by Egyptian police and is thought to have been originally exhibited at the Egyptian Institute in London in 1949/1950.

Egyptian born artist Tahia Halim was born to an aristocratic family from Dongola in the Sudan. In 1945, Halim married artist Hamed Abdallah. She went with him to Paris in 1949 where she continued to study art, paint and exhibit. She won a Guggenheim Award in 1958, and a Gold Medal at the 1960 Cairo Salon. Another superb example of artistry is a carved marble statue of Cleopatra, signed & dated 1874, by Charles Adrien Prosper d Epinay. Born in British Mauritius, the son of a prominent politician, Prosper d'Epinay moved to Paris in 185. He initially worked as a caricaturist before taking up sculpture some seven years later. He is acclaimed for his busts of members of high society, most notably his portraits of Edward, Prince of Wales purchased by Queen Victoria, Dates of note are: Auction: 7th & 8th December Viewing: 2nd, 3rd& 5th December First Auction of 2012 1st & 2nd February Entry deadline: 11th January Gorringes Auctioneers,15 North Street, Lewes, East Sussex,BN7 2PD Tel: 01273 472503, www.gorringes.co.uk.

Christmas Shopping With A Bang Go for the really inspiring individual gift this year Is it that time of year again? Here comes hours spent trudging up and down your local high street with the masses, looking for the latest video game for the boy, and something sparkly for the girl, all the while worrying about the food, the wine the relations. ANTIQUES, ART, AUCTIONS

Vladimir Ovchinnikov - New & Recent Works Erarta Galleries London is proud to present a selection of new and recent works by Vladimir Ovchinnikov. One of the most significant artists to emerge from St. Petersburg during the Soviet era, Vladimir Ovchinnikov is known for his paintings that blur the boundaries between realism and surrealism, fusing together contemporary Russian subject matter with magical, fantastic elements, often derived from myth and religion. His distinctively rotund, heavy-bodied, yellow-skinned figures have a primeval, statuesque quality, as if stemming from ancient monuments or religious icons – and yet at the same time his works also allude to social and political conditions, vividly satirizing contemporary mores, and puncturing the hypocrisy and spiritual bankruptcy at the heart of everyday life. A pioneer of the nonconformist movement, in which artists rebelled against the State aesthetic of Socialist Realism, Ovchinnikov coorganized the ill-fated ‘Exhibition of the Workmen Artists’ at the Hermitage Museum in 1964 – infamously closed after just three days by the KGB, who also fired the museum’s director. In 1971, he staged a group exhibition in his own studio, which – despite being similarly repressed and having works confiscated – was key in inspiring the development of an underground, apartment-exhibition scene. Like other ‘unofficial’ artists, he continued to experience several decades of harassment and persecution by the Soviet authorities, but eventually emerged – after the reforms of the early ‘90s – as one of Russia’s most celebrated artists. In 1996 he was given a solo retrospective at The Hermitage.

In his most recent works, exhibited here, the tone is generally less scathing, more reflective and meditative. While there is still an important element of social commentary, the focus is on a more profound exploration of myth and religion. Other stories, too, serve as inspiration: images from Gulliver’s Travels, or from contemporary Russian literature. Perhaps most pertinent of all, as he enters his seventh decade, are his reflections on the artistic process itself, in the various paintings that depict the act of painting, and on the threat of encroaching loss and decay, in his powerful still-lives. 8 Berkeley Street, London, W1J 8DN 020 2499 7861 www.erartagalleries.com

Art And Science, A Marriage Blessed In Battle Stan Rosental Studio Gallery Some four years ago, Aspect County featured the return to battle of artist Stan Rosenthal, who first lived here over fifty years ago. He has now settled in the town with his wife Nicola and daughter Ibakha, who loves to greet visitors to her mother's gallery at 31 Mount Street, from where she sells Stan's paintings, prints (free catalogue available) and cushion and rug designs, together with Dartington pottery. Stan had to stop painting for nearly a year whilst he underwent cataract surgery at the Conquest hospital, but during that period he undertook research with the University of Sussex Medical School into neuroscience and art, eventually being invited to participate in a filmed interview to explain how the brain influences visual art. The film will be shown at the annual conference of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness, to be held at the Dome, Brighton, in July of next year. A booklet will also be produced, and the film and booklet will both be made available to teachers and other educationalists. In the meantime, Stan's work has remained justifiably popular in Wales, and he has had three highly successful exhibitions in the principality during the past few months, with another two coming up before Christmas, one at Llandow (near Cowbridge), and one in Monmouth. Stan's cushion designs are now available again in the battle gallery and are on sale in Europe through Zaida, and Nicola is again stocking Dartington ceramics. The Stan Rosenthal Studio and Gallery is open seven days a week by prior arrangement. Collectable Fine Art Internationally collected artist Jessica Zoob opens her Lewes based Studio “Jessica Zoob creates abstract worlds in which the imagination can roam freely and pleasurably through deeply-layered, impressionistic landscapes. I find her work both emotive and engaging” - Nicole Swengley, of the Financial Times How To Spend It. Zoob regularly shows her collections at Medici Gallery in Cork Street, London W1 and has works in private collections worldwide. Her paintings reflect the quiet beauty of the Sussex countryside. These are investment pieces, which are a sheer pleasure to own. As Julia Trappe – wife of opera tenor Juan Diego Florez, says “…When I first saw the work of Jessica Zoob I was very touched. She communicates the complex layers of femininity with a sense of beauty, sensibility and tenderness.” “Looking around her studio, it is obvious that Zoob is that rare creature a life-enhancer. This is her world and it is a place of beauty, warmth and above all love. It takes courage to push on from something being ‘good enough’ to it being absolutely magical and she has never ducked that test.” Helen Chislett, Art of England. Zoob’s use of line, texture and colour recall the work of Gerhard Richter’s abstract paintings and the poetic quality of Claude Monet’s later works. However, they are rich in imagination with an innate energy and beauty all of their own. Leonie Irvine Medici Gallery Cork Street. Tank Franรงaise Watch Elegance & class from Cartier A modern interpretation of Cartier's signature Tank design, the Tank Francaise is a stylish blend of strength and beauty. This smaller version features a thin curved steel case on an elegant brushed steel bracelet with polished borders and a hidden deployment clasp. Visible beneath the sapphire crystal, the offwhite dial boasts bold black Roman numerals, blue steel sword hands, and the Cartier name. An octagonal crown, appointed with a blue spinel cabochon, adds a distinctive touch. A sophisticated accent for any occasion, this watch offers Cartier calibre 057 quartz movement and is rated water resistant to 30 meters. The name Cartier is synonymous with luxury, quality, and style. Founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier, the company became renowned worldwide for its design and production of beautiful jewelry and opulent objets d'art. A royal commission in 1904 made Cartier a supplier to Europe's Crowned Heads of State and led England's King Edward VII to describe Louis Cartier, grandson of the founder, as the jeweler of Kings, the King among jewellers. By the early 20th century, Cartier had expanded its collection to include watches. At a time when pocket watches were still considered de rigueur for the distinguished gentleman, Cartier helped popularize the wristwatch, making it a bold fashion statement for men and women as well as a status symbol

among the well-to-do. Louis Cartier is credited with creating the first men's wristwatch, the Santos, in 1904. He developed and named the watch for his client and friend, the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed a device that would allow him to read the time without taking his hands off the controls of his airplane. Other classic designs followed, including Cartier's signature timepiece--the Tank--which debuted in 1917 during the First World War and was inspired by the tough new war machine the Americans introduced to the fighting in Europe. Cartier's first waterresistant watch was named after the Pasha of Marrakesh, who requested that Cartier create watch that he could wear while in his swimming pool and not lose track of time. And while it is known more for its luxurious design, Cartier is also credited with creating the highly functional deployment folding clasp in 1910, which is now used by watchmakers around the globe. Modern Cartier watchmakers still base their watch designs on the early fundamentals developed by Louis Cartier. Treasured by collectors, Cartier watches are distinguished by their impressive variety of shapes (round, square, oval, Tank, Tortue and Tonneau), by their exceptional materials and workmanship, and by their recognizable Cartier aesthetic, an elegant blend of classic and modern design. Time Creates History The watch marks its progress and the pen seals its testimony For more than 165 years, Ulysse Nardin has forged a reputation through its precious and exclusive timepieces. Continuing its long tradition of innovation and passion for craftsmanship, Ulysse Nardin is opening up new horizons for its discerning clients and has now developed an instrument dedicated to the art of writing. Ulysse Nardin has teamed up with Visconti, the writing instrument specialist with 20 years’ expertise, to present a fountain pen that reflects the highest values of its clientele: a masculine communication tool that is classic yet innovative. A small masterpiece of fine jewelry craftsmanship, the fountain pen is hewn from a block of the purest resin in the Ulysse Nardin color. More than 20 separate stages are required to produce the resin sections alone. The metal parts, made of 18-carat gold or 925 sterling silver, are produced in Florence at the Visconti headquarters. The patented mechanical parts of the pen offer many outstanding features, such as the bayonet closure system with safety mechanism, whereby the cap can be locked

shut with just a quarter turn. There is also the filling system which benefits from a maximum writing autonomy equivalent to around 10 ink cartridges, and an ingenious system that prevents ink spillage during flights. And the famous Visconti triple-channel ink feed, unique in the world, is the same color as the resin and allows for optimal ink flow to the nib. The Ulysse Nardin fountain pen crystallizes the brand's core values: innovation and technical perfection, as well as its references to the marine world, with the tight, carefully hand-sewn net and the stylized anchor, another characteristic motif. The brand name and gold purity mark are meticulously engraved by hand, while the clip, sculpted from a block of solid gold or silver, is inscribed with the pen’s serial number. Accompanied by the travel inkwell, the fountain pen can be carried in a briefcase to be refilled even on the move. The brand itself evokes the sea, the world of sailing ships, ancient and modern, and the life of travel. Likewise, the inkwell has been specially designed for use on journeys, and allows the pen to be easily refilled in even the most inconvenient situations.

AC159 - Heart Of Gold_Aspect County 14/11/2011 12:34 Page 10

FOOD & DRINK

Heart of Gold Rapeseed Oil - TLC In A Bottle Heart of Gold is a 100% natural, pure, rapeseed oil grown, produced and bottled by farmer Nick Bradley on his farm overlooking the picturesque Vale of Belvoir, on the Lincolnshire/Leicestershire border. Bursting with flavour and oozing with healthy goodness, it’s a completely sustainable British product, originating from fields in the Heart of England.

Rapeseed oil enjoys many health and culinary benefits. It has been proved to contain only half the saturated fat of olive oil and is packed with Vitamin E (a natural antioxidant) and Omegas 3, 6 & 9. In addition, it’s free from preservatives, trans-fats and artificial colourings, all of which make it the ideal choice for lowering cholesterol and promoting a healthy heart.

Like many farmers, Nick was aware of a need to diversify, so he spent a considerable amount of time researching where there was a gap in the market which he could fill, using the resources at his disposal. An interest in cooking and healthy eating fuelled him to explore the possibility of converting some of his rape crop into a product that would be both nutritious and delicious. What originally began as a small-scale experiment for personal use quickly burgeoned into something much bigger.

Not only is Heart of Gold rapeseed oil good for your heart and your general wellbeing, it tastes utterly delectable too. So much so that it was recently selected in a blind tasting of ten different oils by top London Chef, Tristan Welch, who uses only rapeseed oil in his kitchen at Launceston Place. He described Heart of Gold as having ‘a faintly nutty smell’ that ‘develops into a delicate flavour of fresh wild herbs. It tastes like a summer’s day!’

He explains: ‘It soon became apparent that ‘olive oil’ had become shorthand for ‘oil’, simply because consumers were not aware that there were other, equally healthy, tasty and versatile options available. I loved the idea of a home-grown, locally produced oil, which would be high in flavoursome goodness but low on food miles. I’m very proud that Heart of Gold is grown, pressed, filtered and bottled in the same square mile, so it is completely sustainable and traceable.’

Heart of Gold is still a young brand, but Nick's enthusiasm for the product and for its future growth is plain to see. As well as establishing a growing network of stockists, including selected supermarkets (Waitrose, Tesco, Asda and the Co-op), independent farm shops and delicatessens, Nick is also working on a range of flavoured oils and dressings to be launched next year. www.heartofgoldrapeseedoil.co.uk

From sowing to harvesting, pressing to bottling, the process is hands-on and meticulously overseen by Nick. The tiny black seeds from the vibrant yellow oilseed rape flowers are harvested, cleaned and slowly crushed to extract the oil. It is then left to settle naturally, before being filtered, not once but three times, for maximum purity, taste and nutritional content. This method of cold pressing, whilst producing less volume, ensures the resulting golden oil is totally pure and unadulterated. For its growing number of fans, rapeseed oil should need no introduction – but for anyone who is new to it, here’s a bit more background…

Healthy Roots Grows A leading nursery group that prides itself on delivering high quality care has chosen an expanding Kent company to supply the meals it serves. Townsend Montessori, which runs nurseries throughout the south east, works with Healthy Roots, a young company with a growing reputation for preparing and delivering high quality food made by hand from fresh, locally-sourced produce.

The nursery group shares Healthy Roots co-founder Dawn Phelps’ philosophy that healthy and nutritious food is vital to the children in its care. Operations Manager Toni Lawrence explained: “The children really enjoy the food provided by Healthy Roots. The menu has lots of variety and new things for children to try.” She added: “Healthy Roots provides a very healthy but value for money menu for children and sources wonderful, locally-produced products. Dawn listens to feedback not just from the nursery but from the children and adapts the menus when necessary.” Townsend Montessori, the first client to sign up with Healthy Roots, has now chosen it to provide food to more of its nurseries – in south London and in Faversham. Ofsted has rated all the group’s nurseries as Outstanding. Dawn explained: “All the evidence shows that healthy, handmade food is not just better for children nutritionally but helps them learn because they are more alert. Parents who care about what their youngsters eat at home know that what the nursery serves for lunch is as important as the attention, the social skills and the learning it provides. “We believe children should eat freshly-prepared, healthy food, not processed, pre-packed meals, and it is rewarding to see that a nursery group with Townsend Montessori’s reputation agrees.” Healthy Roots also acts sustainably, supporting local producers and reducing environmental impact by keeping ‘food miles’ to a minimum. “Fresh local food is not just better for the children but better for the environment, too,” said Dawn.

Brussels Sprout and Chopin Potato Croquettes Serves 4 - Prep Time: 20 minutes (plus chilling time) . YOU'LL NEED . 200g 500g 1 50g 100g 300ml 200g 1tsp 1

Brussels sprouts, trimmed and sliced Chopin potatoes, cooked and crushed Egg, beaten Plain flour Finely ground breadcrumbs, seasoned Vegetable oil Tin chopped tomatoes Small bunch of coriander, chopped Worcester sauce Shallot finely sliced

4. Pour the oil into a large, deep frying pan, to a depth of about 4cm, and place over a medium-high heat. Fry the croquettes until golden all over for a total of 5 minutes – you may need to do this in 2 batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Drain on kitchen paper and serve immediately with the dip.

. METHOD . 1. Drop the sprouts into boiling water and blanch for 2-3 minutes. Drain and refresh with cold water. Combine with the potato, mashing them together with a fork. Season well and form the mixture into 2 croquettes. 2. Place the egg in a bowl, the flour on a plate and the breadcrumbs on a second plate. Dip each croquette into the flour first, to coat, then the egg and lastly the breadcrumbs. Make sure each is fully covered. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes, or up to 24 hours 3. To make the dip combine the tomatoes, coriander, Worcester sauce and shallot, season and set aside.

The Ultimate Cauliflower Cheese Serves 4 - Prep Time: 20 minutes . YOU'LL NEED . 1 50g 50g 300ml

1 tbsp 125g

Cauliflower Unsalted butter, plus a bit extra for the ovenproof dish Plain flour Milk A generous grating of nutmeg Freshly grated black pepper French grainy mustard, like Dijon Keen’s Cheddar cheese, freshly grated. A handful of flat leaved parsley, finely chopped

. METHOD . 1. Firstly prepare the cauliflower by washing it and cutting it into individual little florets, with all the hard woody stems cut off. Place the florets in a double boiler and steam until they are soft and yielding when pierced with a sharp knife. Remove the cauliflower florets from the heat and place in a buttered, ovenproof serving dish. 2. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook gently for 1 minute. Remove the butter and flour from the heat and stir in the milk, very gradually. Bring the milky mixture to the boil, and then continue cooking and stirring on a medium heat, until the sauce thickens. 3. Pre-heat the grill to its hottest setting. 4. Stir the nutmeg, freshly grated black pepper and the mustard into the sauce, along with half the grated cheese. Pour the sauce over the hot cauliflower, sprinkle with the remaining cheese and brown under the hot grill. Serve with freshly chopped parsley sprinkled on top. 44

The Dirty Habit A traditional pub with a regal history that would impress any pilgrim These days it's hard to find an unspoiled pub that has not been 'Eurotrashed' and morphed into a style guru's nightmare. Our pubs are disappearing faster than the British Navy's fleet. It is a rare and enlightening experience to come across a traditional pub that ticks all the boxes as far as ' British' is concerned but also panders to our more European desires. Well, we have become connected to 'Le Continent' via 'Le Tunnel' with 'Le Eurostar'. The great British pub has always been a haven to meet friends, chat about the cricket score or the five nations cup, have a pint, and crack a few jokes with mates. Now that pubs are more family friendly, they have become places to relax and spend time together whilst enjoying a meal as well. The Dirty Habit is a gem of a pub that I recently re-discovered whilst visiting Leeds Castle near Hollingbourne. What a pleasant surprise when I walked in to see the old victorian tables and chairs on a wooden floor, with a fire burning away brightly in the log burning stove. A warm welcome was expressed from behind the traditional hand pumps which were still in place, standing proudly in a row like foot soldiers awaiting a visit. Set directly on the Pilgrims Way at the foot of the Downs, The Dirty Habit is reputed to have been the overnight resting place for King James II when he was on his way to France. The pub dates originally from the eleventh century, when it was part of a monastery which brewed fine ales and was surrounded by vineyards. Recently restored by the landlord, much of the character has been preserved, including the Georgian oak panelling which gives the bar and dining area a regal air of composure seldom found in a local. As I had built up an appetite from negotiating the winding lanes set in beautiful countryside along the Pilgrims Way, I decided to ask for the menu. A wide range of English as well as French and Italian specialities were on offer. 46

Quite a surprise in a small village pub such as this. I decided to go for the Dublin pie and a traditional pint. I was well pleased I did, and when I left to continue my journey, fully satisfied... I could imagine those pilgrims hundreds of years ago having felt the same way too. I continued on to Canterbury and arrived home well fed and ready for bed. Written by The Incognito Gourmet. 10 Small Steps To A Big Organic Christmas The choices we make over the festive season - about what goes on our plates, the presents we buy, what we wear and what we put on our skin – have far reaching consequences for our health, the health of our countryside, and the development of countries across the world. Little choices can add up to make for a big change, so this Christmas we’ve come up with ten ways for you to enjoy a festive period that is better for people, animals and the planet: 1. Food for thought - With 30% of an individual's carbon footprint made up of their food choices, food is the single most important, everyday way for people to reduce their own environmental impact. Choosing the most climate-friendly food choices means supporting sustainable agriculture and buying organic, local and seasonal food. 2. Wear green this winter - Almost a quarter of all the world’s insecticides and 10% of pesticides are sprayed on cotton, but with many high street retailers now stocking organic, it’s easier than ever to go green. 3. Drink organically - Opt for organic wine and not only will you be supporting a natural system of farming, you’ll also be consuming less sulphur - which appears to lessen the chances of a hangover. 4. Dine Organically - Eating organically this Christmas means you can avoid consuming pesticide residues, GM ingredients or unnecessary food additives. Over 300 pesticides are routinely used in non-organic farming

(the average Cox’s apple may be sprayed 16 times with over 30 different pesticides and chemicals before it is harvested), compared to only six allowed under Soil Association organic standards. Artificial fertilisers used in non-organic farming increase the water content of vegetables, which depresses their nutritional content. 6. Be a natural beauty - Your skin is the largest organ of your body and what you put on it can be absorbed in tiny amounts. The impact from the daily cocktail of substances that we put on our skin is only just beginning to be understood and while one product may contain very small amounts of some of these ingredients, it is the cumulative effect of applying various products regularly that causes concern. What's more, additives in toiletries can end up in the water systems and remain in the environment for some time. 7. Get your hands dirty - Over 29% of UK adults have never set foot on a farm. The Soil Association is working to change that. Visiting a farm helps people see how their food starts out and it demonstrates how we can choose to eat food that helps the environment rather than damages it. 8. Get to know your neighbours - Make it your New Year’s resolution to join a buying group or Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Project. By getting together in a group from your work place, neighbourhood, club or school, people can buy in bulk directly from farmers and receive fresh organic produce at a lower price, whilst farmers receive a secure market and fairer income. Many CSAs also enable and encourage people to get involved on the farm [8]. 9. Avoid the Christmas Crush - Reconnect with the people who grow, make and supply your food by shopping at a local farmers’ market or farm shop. Not only do you get to avoid the queues, you support the local economy too. Farmers' markets are springing up across the UK so there is likely to be one near you, with hundreds of choices for your Christmas meat, veg, puddings, cakes and pies. In addition to all the yummy organic food, farmers' markets are a great place to find handmade and unique Christmas gifts, which support the local economy. 10. Food for Life, not just for Christmas - Give a gift that will continue making a difference long after the decorations have been boxed away. The Soil Association is a charity and relies on its members to continue its work. For more details go to www.soilassociation.org

Whole-y cow! The Jolly Farmers has teamed up with Manor Farm in Wotton, Dorking, buying in entire cows in an effort to be more economical. As part of a recent programme of waste-saving events, the Reigate deli-pub is introducing its latest efforts to reduce food waste. Jon Briscoe, owner of the Jolly Farmers is delighted with the collaboration with the local farm; “There are so many benefits of buying in an entire animal, rather than just the cuts we think we will use in the restaurant. It saves on an enormous amount of packaging, and up to 90% of the animal is used. It’s a great scheme and we hope other pubs will follow.”

The Jolly Farmers is passionate about supporting local food production in the Surrey area, and in this case, helping to maintain a historic farmed landscape. Manor Farm in Dorking has centuries farming heritage in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The family run farm extends to 2,500 acres over a distance of 20 miles and over 1,000 beefcattle are reared each year from the herd of Belted Galloway cattle. Laurence Matthews, who owns and runs the farm with his father, Fred said; “Our aim is to provide high quality local produce direct from Manor Farm, as part of our sustainable approach to food production in the Surrey Hills.” Adding; “Our pedigree herd of Belted Galloways are a hardy breed living outdoors all year round, and provide beef full of flavour and superior in quality.” Fondly know as ‘Belties,’ the cattle are traditionally reared on local pasture and herb-rich down land for the National Trust. Evidence suggests that levels of omega-3 fatty acids in grass-fed beef are up to 11 times higher than in grain-fed beef

Waitrose To Stock Kent Crisps In Selected County Stores Waitrose is to stock all four flavours of premium, hand-cooked Kent Crisps at selected Kent stores. This includes the new Canterbury store due to open on October 6 when shoppers will be able to sample Kent Crisps. Other stores are Ramsgate, Ashford, Dartford and Bluewater. Launched in March this year, Kent Crisps which reflect the flavours and landscapes of the ‘Garden of England’, have become a firm favourite with crisps lovers – selling more than 250,000 packets in a short time, ahead of expected demand. They are made from potatoes grown at the Quex Park Estate, Birchington, Kent, using sustainable methods – an important factor for the estate’s conservation aims. The Ashmore Cheese and Onion flavour has already won a Great Taste Award. Other flavours are Sea Salt and Biddenden Cider Vinegar, Oyster and Vinegar (a first for the crisps industry), and Sea Salt. All contain only natural flavours and colours and are available in 40g bags. MasterChef John Torode recently described the crisps as ‘delicious’. Producers Quex Foods are thrilled Waitrose has decided to stock Kent Crisps. Anthony Curwen, the company’s managing director, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received for Kent Crisps, it’s been beyond our expectations. For Waitrose to stock our crisps is a thoroughly wonderful endorsement of the quality and provenance we strive to achieve.” Tracey Marshall, Waitrose’s product manager local and regional, said: “Kent Crisps are a quality local food, traditionally made by producers respected by their communities. All this makes them perfect for our shoppers and we are delighted to stock them.” Sales of Kent Crisps help to maintain Quex Park Estate – a 250-acre country park, with a splendid 18th century Regency house, and the world renowned Powell-Cotton Museum, plus other visitor attractions. 50

Pub Is The Hub The impact of pub rural services schemes on local society. Established nearly ten years ago with encouragement from His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Pub is The Hub has advised local communities, licensees and pub owners to work together to support, retain and locate local services, where possible within the pub. Pub is The Hub also assists licensees with guidance on the availability of local and regional project funding, and by having a thorough independent understanding of the pub business, is able to advise on and facilitate the best way to progress individual schemes to suit their communities. Independent research group Ecorys surveyed 71 pubs that have delivered, or were in the process of delivering, a rural services scheme, plus 100 local residents that live near 6 existing Pub is The Hub schemes. The report: Pub is The Hub: Evaluating the Impact of Initiatives 2011 highlights that Pub is The Hub has evolved considerably over time, developing into an independent force for change at national policy level, as well as maintaining its key original objective of assisting rural communities and local pubs to address their service priorities. The findings identified that Pub is The Hub schemes bring clear social, economic and environmental benefits. Key highlights include: • 100% of respondents agreed that their local Pub is The Hub scheme is either 'very important' or else 'important' to the community. • Nearly three quarters of respondents agreed that a Pub is The Hub scheme allowed them to meet more local people than they would have done otherwise. • Over four fifths of respondents agreed that the Pub is The Hub scheme improved their access to a key service and helped overcome local deprivation issues. • Almost all respondents agreed that Pub is The Hub schemes saved them time. • Over four fifths agreed that Pub is The Hub schemes contribute to making the area they live in more attractive. • Many schemes have recruited additional full time employees, as well as securing the retention of some employees, primarily benefiting people living in the local area. • Customers saved time by travelling to a Pub is The Hub scheme, rather than the nearest alternative. This equates to a cost saving of approximately 81p per visit. • Pub is The Hub schemes encourage less car use, with a clear environmental and cost benefit. Nearly three quarters of people agreed that projects save them money; the average travel cost saved per visit is over £1.50. • Virtually all of the respondents believed that the Pub is The Hub scheme supported local suppliers and businesses. Licensees also frequently cited that they use a wide range of local suppliers to stock their scheme. 52

ASPECT COUNTY

• The majority of schemes either break even or generate a small profit for the licensee but the real benefits are a sense of well being and community spirit. • Over one half of licensees stated that their Pub is The Hub scheme had increased the number of customers to the pub. John Longden, Chief Executive of Pub is The Hub, who commissioned the research, said: “The report reveals that Pub is The Hub schemes are effective inbuilding sustainable communities, supporting health and well-being, contributing to environmental priorities and encouraging a prosperous local economy. The findings will strengthen our work as we continue to engage with hard-working licensees and local communities and empower them to work together as well as take ownership of local issues. We now also have hard evidence of how good pub schemes can provide wider strategic objectives at a local and national level. This will encourage us to continue to seek and leverage in-kind and financial support from a range of organisations and individuals and secure further new project investment with local and rural authorities and government departments.” The Ecorys report concludes by saying: “It is reasonable to suggest that Pub is The Hub has changed the perception of the rural pub in a positive way. The research team believe it is important to acknowledge that, in recognising the success of Pub is The Hub over the past nine years, a key element of this success may be credited to its informal, flexible approach that has allowed the organisation to offer creative and innovative support to rural communities. In many ways, Pub is The Hub is less an organisation, more a collective vocational shared vision of how rural services, communities and local pubs can be improved and enhanced.” Founder Patron HRH The Prince of Wales, who helped establish Pub is The Hub in 2001, said in a foreword to the report: “This report shows that rural pubs can bolster a rural economy, provide local jobs for local people, increase the sense of wellbeing in the area, and, ultimately, preserve the heart and soul of Britain’s rural communities. I hope that, as many more people learn about the excellent work of this initiative, even more pubs will be supported over the next 10 years and even more pubs will become the hub of their community.” Pub is The Hub is a not-for-profit advisory organisation that helps support the needs of licensees and communities by offering independent specialist advice on diversification or community ownership of pubs so that they can provide viable local services at the heart of the community. Such services might include a village shop, Post Office services, IT training, school meals, lunch clubs or allotments and community centres. Pub is The Hub was set up in 2001 by its Founder Patron HRH The Prince of Wales. For more information go to: www.pubisthehub.org.uk

Beauty Is In The Eye... Be smoking this Christmas with our beauty editors make-up loves. The classic smoky eye look is a tough one to master. We either go way over the top, and end up looking like we have had three rounds with Mike Tyson, or we don’t have sufficient confidence to go quite dark enough. The result being, a half hearted wishy-washy smoky eye, that looks more teenage experiment than it does sultry sex goddess! The key really is to add the product little by little, and then blend, blend and blend! Using an old cotton bud or your index finger as an application brush, just doesn’t cut this look, trust me. It takes practice and patience, as well as the right tools to master this look. Here are some of the smokey eye make-up items I am loving this season. Youngblood have released a fab little Pressed Mineral Eye-shadow Quad for the winter. Starlet combines the four perfect tones you will need to create gorgeous smoky eyes. It consists of a light base colour, which can be swept over the entire lid to create a fine blank canvass. Two tones of grey enable you to choose the depth of colour you wish to create, one of which has a lovely sparkle to it (perfect for those Christmas parties). If you are feeling confident, a lovely hue of charcoal grey is there to add sexy drama. www.ybskin.co.uk RRP £32.00

If you want to add a dramatic sweep, why not try one of my favourite Long-wear Gel Eye Liners from Bobbi Brown. Gel liners come in a little pot and are applied using a liner brush (this is actually a lot easier than it sounds). A bold dark line above the lashes, frame the eyes, whilst adding depth. Gel liners have fantastic staying power, so you can actually dance around until three in the morning, without your liner seeping down your face. www.bobbibrown.co.uk RRP £16.50 My all time top mascara is still Lancome’s Hypnose Drama in Black. I wasn’t blessed with long thick lashes, but after using this mascara I often get asked if I have eyelash extensions on. The unique curve design of the application brush lifts, volumises and thickens. www.lancome.co.uk RRP £24.45 Daniel Sandler is one of my favourite celebrity make-up artists and he not only offers a range of fabulous make-up products (I adore his Water Colours Fluid Blusher Pop), he also sells a great selection of high quality make up brushes. It is well worth investing in some decent application tools if you wish to master this look. If you visit his website, he also has a selection of ‘How to’ videos, providing you with step by step, get the look guidance. www.danielsandler.com Prices start from just £8.25.

Taylor Spatial Frame First Thanks to Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon Mr Sohail Khan at Benenden Hospital, 20 year old Stavros Partasidis’s leg, which was fractured 4 years ago in a car accident, will finally heal properly. Having already undergone 10 operations including plating, bone grafting and external fixtures Stavros came to Benenden Hospital to have a Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF), which helps bones to heal the facture gap by providing support, fitted to his leg. This type of treatment has never been used at Benenden Hospital before and it is down to Mr Khan’s knowledge of surgical techniques. These were gained whilst working in the birth place of the science of limb reconstruction, Ilizarov surgery in Kurgan, Siberia, so that Stavros was able to receive this treatment at Benenden Hospital. The titanium ringed frame works by fixing to the bone using stainless steel heavy gauge wires, which are tensioned, to hold the bone in place and also support the limb. The rings are connected to each other through threaded rods which are fully adjustable. The rods are adjusted by the patient four times a day working from a simple sheet drawn up by the consultant, which moves the now healing fracture apart by one millimetre per day. This results in the required lengthening or correction of any deformity. The frame was originally designed by Professor Gavril Abramovich Ilizarov in the 1950’s to treat Second World War orthopaedic conditions. Initially bicycle parts were used for the frame however over the year’s new materials and refinements have been made, producing the modern day equivalent known as a Taylor Spatial Frame. Mr Khan mainly uses this technique through the charity he set upMobile International Surgical TEAMS (Mist) working in the middle east, including the Gaza Strip, The West Bank and Libya.

And So To Bed... There is nothing worse than waking up in the morning bleary eyed with a groggy head having tossed and turned for eight hours and feeling like you have only slept for ten minutes. Yet you’re not the only one anxiously clock watching the whole night. Most adults have experienced insomnia or sleeplessness at one time or another in their lives and an estimated 30%-50% of the general population are affected by insomnia, and 10% have chronic insomnia. Bad sleeping habits can take a toll on your energy, mood, and ability to function during the day and chronic insomnia can even contribute to health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Well from now on you don’t have to put up with it any longer. New Nordic has released Melissa Dream, a brand new natural remedy that has helps cure those dreaded sleepless nights. Melissa dream is a natural supplement that contains a potent formulation of active ingredients which encourage relaxation and a healthy sleep pattern. Its first key ingredient is Melissa officinalis, otherwise known as lemon balm. Mainly found in the Mediterranean region, it has been used for medicinal purposes since the 14th century and its sedative effect has been well documented. Melissa oil works because it contains eugenol, which has been shown to calm muscles. It also contains tannins which contribute to its antiviral effects, as well as terpenes that add to its soothing effects. Melissa Dream also contains chrysin, a flavonoid component of Chamomile, which is the chemical attributed to Chamomile’s ability to relieve anxiety and promote sleep as well as L-theanine which creates a sense of relaxation within 30-40 minutes. It also stimulates creation of alpha waves in the brain, causing relaxation and more alertness and stimulates the production of GABA, leading to more serotonin and dopamine, both key relaxation agents. 56

The added B vitamins help maintain a normal function of the nervous system as it affects neurotransmitters in the brain, to relieve stress, anxiety and depression. Lack of B-vitamins contributes to mood and sleep disturbances. Finally the tablets' content of magnesium helps normal muscle contraction all night and is important for relaxing muscles and nerves. The Melissa Dream tablets are innovative tablets that nourish the body to relaxation and tranquillity without causing drowsiness. Just what you need to get yourself off to the land on nod!

Mind Over Matter Can Yoga Really Improve Your Mind, As Well As Your Waistline? During early 2011, a very frustrating and recurring back injury forced me to explore different forms of exercise. My usual gym routine was becoming increasingly uncomfortable, the cardio machines would leave me wincing in pain and my morning runs were just no longer feasible. It was at this point I decided to explore yoga. Scott was recommended to me through a friend, who like me, has been suffering with a niggling back injury. She enthusiastically told me how her regular sessions with Scott had improved the strength of her back, and how she simply felt better within herself. I was intrigued, so I signed up for some private sessions. Prior to our first lesson I found myself feeling a little nervous. Although my flexibility is pretty good, I’m certainly not as bendy as the women I had seen in the yoga classes at my local gym. My nerves proved to be unfounded. Within ten minutes of meeting Scott, I felt relaxed, interested and focussed on how yoga could actually help me. The lesson was thoroughly enjoyable. Over the coming months I tried to dedicate at least three mornings a week to my new yoga practice. During the summer season I even felt comfortable enough to take my yoga mat to the park and practice everything Scott had taught me. The thing about Ashtanga is you really feel as if you have had a work out. Yes you sweat, yes you feel your heart rate increase and yes, you most definitely ache the next day. On top of all of this, you begin to view life a little differently (or a lot in my case). Not only do you see changes on a physical level, but you also sense positive changes on an emotional level. After a session I always feel calmer, more grounded and generally more positive about life. Scott is very much in demand, he not only runs morning classes every day at Still Point Yoga London (next to London Bridge station), but he also has a string of private clients. I was lucky enough to catch a few moments with him to find out more about this amazing ancient philosophy.

How did you discover yoga? I was traveling through India in 1998 when I came across a yoga class being taken in a large tent on a cliff overlooking the sea in Kerala. The small indian teacher showed incredible strength that I hadn't seen before and I was captivated as he moved backward and forward on his arms, like a swing, in the classic lotus posture. I returned home with an appetite to uncover this balance of strength and flexibility, and found Ashtanga Yoga, which enabled me to really begin to discover the potential of my body. How does Ashtanga Yoga differ from other forms of yoga? Ashtanga Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga that uses a powerful sequence of postures combined with breath to create an internal heat that opens the muscles and purifies the body. Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient systematic practice of yoga that slowly builds in difficulty to allow stuents to safely access their full potential. Focus on breath, balance, and energy allows students to bring their attention to the flow of postures as a moving meditation. It is taught posture by posture so that each student learns it for themselves and experiences how their bodies open and respond to that experience. What are the main benefits of regular practice? What comes with a regular yoga posture practice is a stronger, more flexible physical body, which you have developed with insight. This means that you have taken the time to watch how your body has responded to the yoga practice. Watching your practice means that you 58

ASPECT COUNTY

take your thoughts away from how you normally think and look to yourself, i.e. your conditioned responses and mind patterns. What then comes is concentration, and an experience of changing your thought patterns so that you are able to turn your mind away from negative thinking and nurture a more relaxed state of mind. This is the base of yoga. The ability to adapt, change and lift your experience of yourself to an inspired way of being alive. Is it a good form of exercise for those with back problems or other injuries? A yoga practice can be used in conjunction with established therapies to instill new patterns of movement, strength and balance that can help and assist with most physical problems. The yoga postures, when taught well, are particularly beneficial in working with the spine, as the spine is the fulcrum of the body, where the movement and strength of the body is based. Therefore, a yoga practice is developed with the spine in mind, and existng conditions can be worked with, understood and then, in some cases, transcended. Yoga also assists in changing the way you see yourself with injury, or any type of adversity. Often we find that an injury, or debilitation, can have a negative impact on our psyche. This can then have a detrimental effect on healing. If we change the pattern we have with injury, accepting the situation we find ourselves in, we then open ourselves up to more inspired choices and decisions when it comes to rehabilitation, and allow ourselves to be more open to the discovery of ourselves. I hear Ashtanga is one of the best forms of yoga to help prevent and treat stress, why is that? It is able to let go of the mind patterns of stress by concentrating on the things that are true and real about us as human beings, our body and breath. Stress is a response to past experiences that we have stored in our unconscious mind and that unconscious mind then can dictate how we see our lives turning out (the future). Yoga assists you in stopping that process and creating your experience of life from the only point that truly counts, the present. By focusing on what is real about you as a human being, your body and breath, you are able to let go of the unconscious patterns by seeing your life unfolding as a vibrant, alive and inspired individual, as it happens. Tell me a little bit about Still Point London Yoga? Stillpoint Yoga London was created as a response to my own inquiries into how yoga has affected me. I met Ozge Karabyik when we were on teacher training in New Zealand, and there was an immediate connection between us, not only as fellow trainees, but also in how yoga has affected us and how we see the world as a response to it. We became great friends. We both felt so inspired after our training that we wanted to set something up together as a partnership, to support each other, while supporting people who want to truly learn yoga. So we found a wonderful venue in London Bridge and began to teach how our teachers had taught us, daily and in the morning. We teach the practice in its traditional form, as a self practice. This has a number of huge factors, the main being that the practitioner learns a yoga practice that stays with them for life and also that you are in a class environment but still being individually taught. How do your private sessions differ from those taken in a class? With private sessions you are able to truly meet the person where they are and are able to tailor a yoga practice exactly to what that person needs for their life. Time is spent, with no interruption on a) where that person is in their life b) how yoga can help c) developing a yoga practice for that individual. Another way to understand the meaning of yoga is relationship. The fulcrum of how yoga becomes a part of someone's life is the relationship a person has with a teacher. In personal sessions this relationship is deeply nurtured and the teacher can truly see what a person needs, then assist them to be able to experience yoga where they are, whether it be through postures, relaxation or meditation. Gift vouchers for Scott's private one on one sessions are available for purchase from www.ashtangalife.com. Written by Elizabeth Dadson.

British Fashion Highlights 2011 Written by Fashion editor Amanda Waters It's been an extraordinary year for British Fashion. London received accolades for it's breathtaking, yet wearable collections for Spring/Summer 2012 from fashion experts, press, fashion buyers, and celebrity attendees alike, securing it's position at the forefront of the four main cities, New York, London, Milan and Paris in the fashion stakes. Moreover, we received a wonderful addition to British Fashion in the form of the Duchess of Cambridge, bringing light and life in the style stakes with her very own unique and demure British style. Also the British Fashion Council expanded it's emerging designer talent showcase 'London Show Rooms', from Paris and New York to include Los Angeles and Hong Kong, which gives emerging designers a chance to be seen 'in the spotlight' oversees. Genius! The Spring/Summer 2012 designs were so commercial in fact, that I could picture one piece from every collection in my wardrobe - if only I had a wardrobe (and a wallet) big enough, and if it's colour you're after for next Spring - fear not - these collections won't disappoint! There will be an abundance of florals - (as seen at Mary Katrantzou, Christopher Kane, Erdem, Ashish, Nicole Farhi, Clements Ribeiro, and Kinder Aggugini), bright yellows and neon colour-pop stripes (as seen at Jaeger, Holly

Fulton, Mulberry, Issa and Mark Fast), and tribal prints (as seen at Burberry Prorsum, and as cocktail wear at Sass & Bide, and David Koma). With the great news that Stella McCartney is coming back to London on the evening of February 18th to host a special fashion presentation at London Fashion Week, and now also McQ will show at London Fashion Week in February 2012, alongside the fact that Tommy Hilfiger opened his new European Flagship store here on November 24th in Brompton Road, plus the little matter of the Olympics being hosted here next year, we really must be doing something right......! It certainly seems that we have a lot to look forward to when thinking about 2012 on these long winter nights! So have a very happy Christmas - and a wonderful New Year! St. Moritz - The Height Of Discreet European Luxury Written by Cindy-Lou Dale St. Moritz, buried in a lake-studded valley half an hour from the Italian border, surrounded by +4,000 metre high peaks and 350km ski slopes, offers some of the best powder snow in the world. The dream of skiing in St. Moritz, Europe’s winter glam capital, seems impossibly expensive to most. Yet, despite the furs, caviar and snow-chained Bentley’s, this wealthy Swiss mountain village is affordable – the trick is knowing where to look and when to go.

If it’s chic you’re looking for, you’re guaranteed to find it in one of the 39 individually styled dream rooms at the Hotel Misani (St. MoritzCelerina, ph +41 81 8398989, www.hotelmisani.ch), five-minutes from Corviglia. B&B rates start at CHF85/£60.

From Zurich airport take the little red train, which gently threads through the Swiss Alps, clickedy-clacking higher at each track turn, until it reaches St. Moritz - one of the prettiest chocolate-box settings in Europe.

For an all inclusive ski pass, ski hire, and a funky accommodations deal, head to Julier Palace (www.julierpalace.com). Prices at this 40-room hotel start at CHF99/£70 and includes breakfast and dinner. Should you plan to spend the day skiing you may want to take a packed lunch along as it’s pricey on the mountain - the Coop supermarket has good sandwiches.

The resort divides into the urban elegance of St. Moritz-Dorf - with its unique concentration of fashion boutiques and luxury hotels; and St. Moritz-Bad, a settlement of high-rise apartments on the valley floor, which is where you’ll find the Hotel Sonne (St. Moritz-Bad, ph +41 81 8385959, www.sonne-stmoritz.ch), a 120-bed hotel with views of the Piz Nair, Suvretta and Corviglia. Here CHF164/£116 buys a basic B&B and ski pass (minimum stay three days). For a modern alternative, the most recent B&B addition to St. Moritz is The Piz (St. Moritz-Bad, ph +41 81 8321111, www.piz-stmoritz.ch) with rates from CHF85/£60.

For the self-catering apartment option, contact retro-styled Chesa Muragl (St. Moritz-Celerina, ph +41 81 8362500, www.chesa-muragl.ch) where rates start at CHF112/£79 per person, if shared with 6 (minimum stay required). Inexpensive eating out options can be found at Pizzeria Caruso (Hotel Laudinella) who have a great salad bar (CHF 9.50/£6.70) and Restaurant The Piz for the best pizza in the valley (from CHF13.50/£10). Treat yourself to a romantic dinner at Lej da Staz and book a lake view table (three-course dinner for two, plus a good Riesling, cost CHF165/£117).

If you don’t want to compromise on elegance but still want a deal, just a few minutes away, in idyllic neighbouring hamlets, is where you’ll find picture postcard gems like Lej da Staz (St. Moritz-Celerina, +41 81 8336050, www.lejdastaz.ch); a secluded and romantic ten-room chalet with a superb restaurant and its own lake – great for nature lovers. B&B rate starts at CHF85/£60.

If your accommodations exclude a ski pass, pick up a limited access day pass for the skiing area of Zuoz for CHF35/£25; or one that provides access to all the slopes and free public transport across the valley for CHF72/£51. Each piste has a different season, consult www.engadin.stmoritz.ch/mountains before setting off. For ski equipment hire contact Boom Sports (www.boom-sport.ch); their daily rates for hire of skis, boots and poles start at CHF62/£44.

The trendy decor and unfussy design at the Inn Lodge (St. MoritzCelerina, +41 81 8344795, www.innlodge.ch) is a favourite with the young at heart. From multi-bed rooms to luxury suites, B&B rates start at CHF33/£23. 66

In late January there’s the ice-cool appeal of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow - a fiercely contested tournament played by the best polo players in the world. Another must-be-seen-at event is the White Turf horse race which has thoroughbreds from across Europe racing across the frozen Lake St. Moritz. The 2012 event is scheduled for three consecutive Sundays in February. Winter walking along the footpaths of Engadin lead to dreamy valleys, across frozen lakes with panoramic views of deep, silent, snow-dusted forests. Stop for lunch at a cozy bistro then head back via a horse-drawn sleigh, taking in the champagne climate. Alternatively, to quicken the pulse do a Bob-Taxi-Ride (two professionals steer a bob-sleigh down the Olympic bob run) or take the funicular up the mountain to Europe’s highest lying Jacuzzi. Alternatively enjoy one of the mountain gourmet restaurants. Should you have spare energy, do the five-mile slope on Corvatsch down to St.Moritz-Bad, and take in the jaw-dropping view over the frozen lakes of the valley. But if nothing else, the moonlit downhill ski-run on Diavolezza is a must. Here, other than your own breath, all you’ll hear is the occasional swish-suck sound of passing skis. Before you leave it’s imperative to partake in the Cresta Run - a wild corkscrew ice tobogganing experience which typically opens a couple of days before Christmas and remains open till the end of February. There are more than thirty highly spirited races and rides occurring every morning. If peace and tranquillity are on your wish-list, indulge in the vertical mineral spa in nearby Samedan. The Samedan Mineral Baths & Spa, tacked onto the back of a baroque church in the town square, is spread over five floors, each encapsulating an ambient light water theme. Progressing from the locker room with its cowhide ottoman’s, you’re taken through the aroma chambers, herbal steam rooms, Jacuzzis, a massage area and a rooftop open-air bath with views of winter sunshine across the stunningly beautiful snow-capped mountains of the Engadin. Once you’re there, you’ll not want to leave. www.mineralbadsamedan.ch. For up to the minute deals contact the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism office www.engadin.stmoritz.ch. WWW.ASPECT-COUNTY.CO.UK

TRAVEL

African Adventure Horseback holidays traversing the Waterberg Mountains. Holidays are precious. Not only for time away from work, but time to recharge. Time for other priorities, time for an often neglected priority which suffers at the hands of careers and mortgage payments: the family. If you have a daughter who is passionate about horses, and your interest is lukewarm to cold beer temperature, I have the perfect solution: a riding safari in South Africa. It was called Horizon Horseback Adventures, and is one of the most diverse, action packed riding holidays in Africa. And now I can blame my 11-year-old daughter Leila, and her riding passion for giving the opportunity for such a wonderfully relaxing and exhausting time that supercharged my batteries and has given me a contented glow of a father with a happy family. Africa is different. An obvious observation, but it feels just more raw, and more expansive, and more elemental compared with southern England’s neat green countryside. We flew out to Johannesburg at the end of August, and spring was just starting to paint a few blossoms onto leafless trees, standing stark against the dried yellows and ochres of the landscape. Dust spumed up around our minibus after we left the tarmac roads, and followed the long straight dust highways into the Waterberg Mountains. Bleary from the long journey, we were taken aback by the warmth of the welcome. It was like a family gathering where you are introduced to a set of beaming long lost cousins. We were also taken aback by the beautiful reed thatch lodge, just metres from a lily-pad laden lake which we shared with a family of hippos, and a musical assortment of 68

wading birds and bullfrogs, giving us exotic neighbours. Hearty lunch and hearty introductions to the other guests on the stoep (veranda), before a unpacking until tea at 3.30pm, and then onto our first outride for 4pm. On conservative mounts for our first outing, there was a frisson of excitement as we left the yard, as a family of giraffes were feeding in the thorn trees at the back of the ranch. Barely discernable at first, their camouflage working exceptionally well, you suddenly realised how close they were, and how special that was. Over the next two hours, we weaved our way down sandy trails, out into bushveld as warthog and antelope slipped in and out of view. The guides tested us out on trots and canters, to size us up on how well we really can ride, rather than whatever we might have claimed to on the form to describe our riding experience. Riding with long stirrups using Australian stock or American McClellan saddles meant that no extra padding on the rump was needed for the long periods on horseback. Nevertheless, as the sun fell out of the sky with the sudden speed of Africa, we felt like we were at an exclusive social occasion of friends, as we drank sundowners on a jetty into the reeds at another of the lakes that dot the 8,000 hectare farm and game reserve. The resident hippos broke surface with their ears and nostrils to find out what all the noise was about, and we mounted up again and rode back to the yard, relaxed, happy and soaking up landscape in the half light, before turning the horses out into the bush for the night.

Shane and Laura Dowinton run a herd of over 60 horses to cater for all abilities, and all activities for a Horizon Adventure holiday. The horses are a collection of Anglo-Arabs, thoroughbreds, Boerperds (a hardy breed used by the Afrikaan for farming and fighting the British) and crossbreeds. Shane is horseman, who has worked with thoroughbreds for racing, as well as showjumpers, and as a stockman on cattle stations in Australia, before getting involved in breaking horses out there. In Oz he met fellow Brit Laura, and they then decided to travel to South Africa to do something with horses in 1993 - at a time when most people had the jitters about the future of Whites in postApartheid South Africa. Through a couple of fortunate twists of fate, they met in the Waterbergs mountain plateau a sixth generation farmer who had a herd of horses that needed to earn their keep. So Shane broke the 30-strong heard from 3-year-olds to 20-year-olds, and with nothing apart from a traditional farmhouse, basic accommodation, one shared bathroom, and glorious surroundings, started riding holidays for people from Jo’burg and other cities. Slowly the ranch has evolved into a delightful Eden for horses and riders, as part of Shane’s philosophy is to keep the horses as near as possible to their natural state, and grazes them in the bush as much as possible, rather than having them stabled at the yard. Horizon boasts (and they are not boastful people) probably the most varied action-packed safari holidays in the world. The variety starts at the outrides from the traditional farmstead that has organically evolved into a very high

standard of lodges and accommodation. Then depending on how long you are staying, and the time of year, activities include cattle herding, polocrosse, gymkhana, western games, two day safaris, jumping and cross country practice. During our seven night stay we managed to squeeze in two sessions of highly competitive and addictive polocrosse – a cross between polo and lacrosse which involves lots of madcap dashing, wheeling, catching, and marking your opposite number like a limpet. Western Games was a hoot, in which all abilities of riders competed against each other, and all managed to come away looking like clowns having had to rummage with a wet face for marsh mallows in flour. Doing this all as a family gave a warm glow beyond the enjoyment of messing around on horses. There are not many other holidays where all ages can do the same activity together. And then to cap it all was a two day mini safari into rhino country. In the afternoon of the first safari day, astride my trusty steed Tequilla, we walked and fast cantered down twisting tracks, having ridden over from Horizon’s Triple B Ranch. There were herds of game on our

flank in the dry yellow veld grasses. Red hartebeest stood, looked at us, and then galloped off across the savannah. Wart hogs trotted across the track in front, tails tall like radio antennae. A black backed jackal sloped into the treeline. We spotted wildebeest, and impala, as the guide Mpho tried to pick up tracks of rhino. He found some fresh droppings, and disappeared into the high grass, but emerged disappointed. And we were getting late as we set off back to camp. The sun slipped a red disc from the sky, and the mountains surrounding the plain glowed red embers of the dying day. On day two we started the day with an encounter with a troupe of baboons who disgorged from a tree as we approached, putting into flight a herd of impala that glided through the savannah in a fluid effortless mass of skipping haunches. Then off to the right, there appeared to be a sandy storage tank near a big tree. Luckily Mpho knew the difference between a camouflaged storage tank and a rhino. We approached slowly, playing grandmother’s footsteps, until it was thought we were close enough. The storage tank had turned out to be a mother and baby rhino, which was still suckling from her mother, and fed with four red billed oxpecker birds feeding from the

tics in its skin. The male rhino came out from behind his thorn bush to stare at us, and then relaxed and collapsed into the dust to rest a little. Human watching was obviously a stressful activity. I’ve been closer to rhinos, but that was at Whipsnade Zoo through the fence. This was up close and personal, but because it was on horseback, we were able to get much closer than a jeep would have. Pleased as punch with our encounter, and returning to the compound, and we came across a family of giraffes grazing in a copse of trees, and edged close enough to wonder at their gracefully elegant movements. The smile that lit up Leila’s face while silently watching this scene, was worth the airfare alone. Ready For Another Christmas? Create a sociable kitchen with lashings of style and festive warmth You’ve heard of oven-ready turkeys but what about Christmas-ready kitchens? When it comes to creating the perfect family kitchen for festive entertaining, bespoke kitchen manufacturer, Barnes of Ashburton offer the following advice:

- If you opt for an open-plan lay-out, beware of cooking smells contamination within the dining area. A good extractor fan is a must – look for models that have an automatic run-on function that continue cleaning the air after you’ve finished cooking.

- Christmas is the most sociable time of the year. Make sure your kitchen incorporates lots of areas to sit and socialise. If you would like your island unit to double as a breakfast bar, ensure that it is 40mm taller than your base units to enable a stool to sit comfortably beneath.

- Don’t abandon your green principles at this time of year. Recycling is even more relevant so consider incorporating discrete recycling bins into your kitchen design with separate compartments for composting, glass and plastics.

- Traditional kitchen planning would position a sink below a window to afford a view whilst washing up or preparing vegetables. For a more sociable approach, consider positioning your sink within an island unit.

- Invest in the right dishwasher, cooker and fridge freezer to help you get through the busy festive season.

- A large central island can almost double surface and storage space. It can also be used to house appliances and can provide an additional plumbing and electricity supply too.

Nothing creates a warm and cosy kitchen like an aga oven. Use its heat to cook Christmas lunch or to make toast for breakfast. But additionally, use its radiated warmth to air washing, dry muddy boots and to create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

- With a full house at Christmas and people eating breakfast at different times, create a “breakfast station” (shown above) with discretely housed tea, coffee and toast making facilities.

Images feature classic framed cabinetry in solid lime wood, painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘String’. Prices for a Barnes of Ashburton kitchen start from £30K.

- For an informal approach, guests can help themselves to breakfast and when not in use, appliances can be secreted away.

AC159 - Insulation & Energy Saving_Aspect County 08/11/2011 10:11 Page 10

HOMES & INTERIORS

Insulation Could Save Bill Payers £635 Per Year An astounding 60% of heat can leak through uninsulated walls and roofs so, with the right measures put in place, householders could now be saving even more money. By simply installing cavity wall and loft insulation, savings of between £185 and £310* per year can be made and with current low installation costs the payback period can be as little as one to three years. The savings are even greater for insulating solid walls and lofts, now between £510 and £635** per year.” Over the past five years, all of the ‘big six’ energy companies, have increased prices by an average of 12% per year, taking the typical annual household energy bill from £660 to £1,293. Due to this, the NIA advises people worrying about their escalating fuel bills to insulate now!

Philip Sellwood, Energy Saving Trust Chief Executive, said: “The savings which can be made by properly insulating your home is no small amount and surely enough to get all homeowners to sit up and take notice. Everyone can do their bit to reduce their energy consumption and start saving money on their energy bills; and insulation is the ideal place to start given there are so many discounts on offer around the UK. With Energy Saving Week just around the corner, there is no better time to make your home more efficient, comfortable and cost effective.” To find out more, or to contact their local installer, householders should visit the NIA website on www.nationalinsulationassociation.org.uk or call 01525 383313

Neil Marshall, Chief Executive of the NIA, commented: “Home insulation is the single most effective method of saving money on domestic energy bills, with savings continuing year on year! There are fast-rising consumer costs in many other areas too so why wait a moment longer to put these money-saving measures into place?” Marshall added: “It’s really as simple as picking up the phone to your local NIA installer who will provide a free home survey.” The NIA also advises that, for complete peace of mind, householders should contact its members for a free quotation and advice on the best type of insulation suitable for the home. Not only are they fully qualified installers who are bound by a strict Code of Professional Practice, but they are also able to advise on the range of grants and subsidies available from the government, local authorities, energy suppliers and how to apply.

Energy Saving Device Helps Consumers To Reduce Soaring Gas Bills At a time when gas and energy prices are dramatically rising, consumers, many with stretched household budgets, are now being offered the chance to cut their gas bills while also becoming energy efficient. A solution to deal with high gas bills is to install the Zenex GasSaver, an energy saving device which reduces domestic gas consumption required for domestic hot water by up to 40%. The Zenex GasSaver is a boiler flue attachment that recovers heat from the waste combustion gases and then uses it to pre-heat the domestic hot water supply. It is installed on top of a standard gas boiler as part of the flue-way and recycles heat from the flue gas which is normally lost. Chris Farrell, Managing Director at Zenex Technologies said: "With all of the big six energy providers raising their prices in the last months by up to 19%, millions of Britons face a huge increase in their gas bills. Many consumers are desperate for proven money-saving solutions that will reduce their soaring expenditures. "The Zenex GasSaver is a device that is easy to install, has no moving parts, is silent, and does not require any electricity or gas to operate. The device recovers heat from the flue gases and helps the boiler deliver hot water much faster to the tap, reducing the need to run lukewarm water down the drain, saving both water and energy consumption." With average gas consumption bills of £850 per household, the Zenex GasSaver can reduce the bills by up to £220 per year. The patented GasSaver has been independently tested by the Building Research Establishment and added to their list of approved energy saving devices. The Zenex GasSaver costs around £500 and is a highly costeffective addition to a new boiler installation. It is sold under licence by the boiler manufacturers, Baxi and Alpha, as the Baxi MultiFit GasSaver and Alpha GasSaver. The Legion Table Made.com is the brainchild of 28 year-old serial entrepreneur Ning Li who co-founded the firm with Julien Callede and Chloe Macintosh. Made.com has raised a £2.5M round in early 2010 with some successful European entrepreneurs such as Brent Hoberman and Michael, Marc Simoncini and John Hunt. Made.com cuts out the middlemen to drastically reduce the prices of designer furniture. It works by showcasing furniture designs on the website and asking people to vote for their favourites. The crowd-sourced designs go into production and the people who voted can go on to buy them at a discount as a thank you for their part in the selection process. Ordersare then placed direct with a manufacturer for mass production in container quantities. Once completed, the orders are shipped to the UK

and their progress is traceable in real time on the web site. The upside of this business model is no unsold inventory and no wastage as the factory only manufactures the exact number of items ordered. New from Made.com is the Legion Pallet table, priced at £149 (£299 on the high street). It is a hand-selected, unique piece made from reclaimed wooden pallets from around the world. They are sandblasted and waxed by hand to create a functionalyet rustic look. Each table is deep tan in colour with individual markings left from their travel stamps (each table has its own uniquestamps from wherever it has been in the world). The slots underneath the pallet are a great storage space for books and magazines. The addition of the wheels allows this piece to be an easily moveable and useful table.

The Master Jack Armchair The Master Jack is a timeless design with a classic touch - a perfect addition to any living space. With distressed fabric and dark leather sides, the armchair adds a smart and patriotic feel to your home. Made from full aniline premium leather and distressed fabric, all upholstered in the UK in solid wood frame. Designed by English designer and stylist Jenny Cooper studied Textiles at Chelsea College of Art and Design, part of University of the Arts London where she specialised in printed design and surface manipulation. After developing an awareness of the environmental issues created by printing textiles, she now develops alternative ways to connect the visual aesthetics of print with a more sustainable output. The Lady and Master Jack chairs are made to order in the UK by a manufacturer based in Nottingham. The moment you place your order production begins. The frames are built in solid pine and the high quality distressed fabric is carefully checked and applied by their experienced upholsterers. Introducing Contemporary Clocks From British Designer Charlie Turner Located beneath the dramatic backdrop of the Cornish moors and a few miles from the coast is the studio and workshop of British clock designer Charlie Turner. When we think of long-case or grandfather clocks most of us conjure up images of large and imposing pieces of furniture made from dark woods, the sort of things found in many grand country houses or old school libraries. However, designer, sculpture, artist and horologist Charlie Turner is breaking the mould when it comes to clock design. Each of his unique and eye-catching clocks are designed and made by hand in Cornwall. Taking a very fresh and inspiring approach to furniture design has led Charlie Turner to the launch of his own collection of contemporary grandfather clocks. Made from natural timbers and designed to reflect minimal and contemporary lifestyles his designs are thoroughly modern, a million miles away from the look of traditional clocks. Charlie's sculptural clocks may well be simplistic in style but the quality of the technology integrated within the designs is every bit as complex and precise as 84

classic timepieces. Charlie Turner explains "I get inspiration from all around me, the sea, the coast, the Cornish landscape. I am always on the lookout for materials, colours and shapes that would never be associated with clocks, from the rocks, driftwood and the amazing range of colours in the sea". The process of creating a new contemporary clock design is a long and meticulous process and Charlie has spent several years perfecting his collection prior to its launch. "I have many ideas for clocks in my head but getting to the manufacturing stage takes some serious work. First I draw the design, re-work and refine its structure. Then I make them up in miniature, alter the proportions, do some road testing with a prototype to gauge the public's reaction etc. This September Charlie Turner will be unveiling his collection of contemporary clocks with the launch of his own brand 'Charlie Turner Designs'. A new website showcasing the 2011 Collection of Charlie Turner Designs will be arriving soon. For more information, visit www.charlieturnerdesign.co.uk.

LOCAL HISTORY

Rye Harbour Lifeboat Tragedy Written by Roger Paine Eighty-three years ago, on 15th November 1928, just a mile or so out at sea from Camber Sands and the village of Rye Harbour on the west bank of the River Rother, there occurred a lifeboat tragedy that was front-page news at the time and which reverberated around the world. It still reverberates today. Especially as many of the descendants of all seventeen crew members who drowned still live in Rye Harbour and the surrounding towns and villages. Every year in November a special service of remembrance is held in the Church of the Holy Spirit, Rye Harbour’s parish church. This year it was held on Sunday 20th November. Many of those attending were relatives and close family friends of those who perished in the tragic circumstances of that fateful night. In the churchyard afterwards wreaths of roses and laurel leaves were laid on the impressive memorial and the individual plaques which record the names and ages of all who lost their lives. The statue above the communal grave is of Manx stone, a gift from the people of the Isle of Man. Erected two years after the tragedy it depicts a lifeboatman in sou’wester, oilskins and lifebelt, A lifeboat station for Rye was first established in 1805 but thirty years later the boat was transferred to Camber on the east side of the Rother, although the name of the station remained unchanged. In the same year another lifeboat station was established at Winchelsea. The Rye station was closed in 1901 and in 1910 Winchelsea was re-named Rye Harbour. After the loss of the lifeboat in 1928 the Winchelsea lifeboat house was closed and never used again. It still stands to this day, defiant but not derelict, high above the shoreline overlooking Rye Bay. The present lifeboat house at Rye Harbour was opened in 1996. In May 1914 a new lifeboat had been offered to Rye Harbour to replace the self-righting ten oar pulling and sailing boat in service since the turn of the century. The boat chosen was a fourteen oar 38ft Liverpool class non self-righting pulling and sailing boat weighing three tons. For the sake of practicality, the crew rejected a self-righting boat as it would have

been difficult to drag across the shingle to launch and the new boat was considered the ideal craft to operate in the surf conditions of Rye Bay. The cost of the new lifeboat was met by a legacy in memory of Mary Stanford after whom the boat was named. It was built by J.E. Saunders of Cowes in the Isle of Wight and sailed from there arriving on 19 October 1916. On 25 November of that year she was launched on exercise in weather conditions that ‘fairly tested her’. The coxswain, crew and RNLI officers were reported as being entirely satisfied. The night of 14th November 1928 was extremely dark and fiercely stormy. A Force 10, gusting Force 11, south-westerly gale was sweeping up the Channel with winds in excess of 80 mph forcing the sea into viciously large waves. Many ships along the coast were wrecked. Just after 4am on the 15th, a small Latvian steamer, Alice of Riga, laden with a cargo of bricks, was in collision with a larger German ship, Smyrna. In the collision, Alice of Riga lost her rudder and had a hole torn in her side. The weather was too bad for the Smyrna to attempt a rescue, and at 4.27am the Ramsgate coastguard station received a message, passed on by North Foreland radio, “Steamer. Alice of Riga. Leaking. Danger. Drifting SW to W 8 miles from Dungeness”. The message was then passed to Rye Harbour coastguard station where it was received at 4.55am. Immediately the coastguard, Bert Caister, fired the maroons, or rockets, to alert the lifeboat crew and the launchers. The noise awoke most of the village where the ferocious storm was rattling windows and doors and dislodging tiles from the rooftops. As a young man Fred Southerden recalled hearing his brother Charlie, a lifeboatman, tumble out of bed saying “best go someone may need help”. In addition to the coxswain and crew of the lifeboat some thirty volunteers both men and women were required to launch the Mary Stanford. Schoolchildren too felt it was their duty to help and from an early age were told “If you hear the gun, you should run!”. On that pitchdark morning in November 1928 everyone did run. For a mile and half

Speculation was rife as to the cause of the capsize. The most likely explanation, which exists to this day, was that Henry Cutting, the bowman, or John Head, the youngest member of the crew, had been washed out of the boat and the others were searching for them. This could be the answer as to why the lifeboat was in the position where it was last seen. On 20th November the funeral was held for those crew members whose bodies had been recoverd. Hundreds of mourners from all over the country attended. Among the dignitaries present were members of the Latvian Government, recognising that the men had lost their lives going to the assistance of the Alice of Riga. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution awarded pensions to the dependants of those who were lost. A local fund raised over £35,000. A colossal sum in those days, equivalent to some £1.6 million today. An Inquest was opened with the Rye Borough Coroner, Dr. T. Harrett, presiding. Witness accounts were heard and the sea worthiness of the lifeboat and competence of the crew called into question. Although it was stated emphatically that the boat and her crew were totally efficient. A Board of Trade Court of Inquiry sat later at Rye Town Hall. After much deliberation, the Court finally announced: “As there were no survivors, the cause of the Lifeboat capsizing is a matter of conjecture, but we are of the opinion that she was suddenly capsized and the crew were thrown into the water. The broken water and heavy surf caused the loss of the crew”.

Memorial In Churchyard Of Rye Harbour Parish Church against wind and rain so strong it was difficult to stand up, down the path across the shingle and mudflats which now form the Rye Nature Reserve to the boathouse on the shore. The maroons were fired just after 5am, but because it was low tide and the weather so appalling, it took three attempts and almost two hours before the boat managed to get away. Then, just as daylight was beginning to break, a message was recived by the coastguard in Rye Harbour that the crew of the Alice of Riga had been rescued by the Smyrna. This message had originally been received by Ramsgate coastguard station at 6.12am. But as it was not, strictly speaking, a distress or 'life saving message' it was regarded as 'entitled' and not therefore requiring priority action. There had also been a further delay in sending the recall to the coastguard after an attempt to call Dungeness via Lydd had failed. Coastguard Bert Caister made frantic efforts, using a large signal lamp, to recall the lifeboat. But to no avail. The Mary Stanford had been launched some five minutes before the recall message reached the lifeboat station. With the crew soaking wet from their exertions in launching, and all the activity in the lifeboat whilst they did their best to keep her head to sea with the oars, it is hardly surprising that in the early morning murk, blinding spray and driving rain that the recall signal was not seen.

The crew of the Mary Stanford were Coxswain, Herbert Head, aged 47, and his two sons James (19) and John (17); 2nd Coxswain, Joseph Stonham (43); Bowman, Henry Cutting (39), and his two brothers, Robert (28) and Albert (26); brothers Charles (28), Robert (23) and Lewis (21) Pope; brothers William (27) and Leslie (24) Clark; cousins Arthur (25) and Morriss (23) Downey; Albert Smith (44), Walter Igglesden (38) and Charles Southerden (22). They had all grown up together, worked and laughed together, and died together. The Mary Stanford remained at Rye Harbour until the Inquiry was completed. In January 1929 she was taken to the RNLI depot in London where she was dismantled and broken up. In the Parish Church of St Thomas, Winchelsea, a magnificent stained glass memorial window, the gift of Lord Blanesburgh, depicts St Nicholas and St Augustine and a lifeboat putting to sea to help a ship in distress. Figures on the shore are watching as it goes. The inscription in glass reads: “These men of Rye Harbour, crew of the lifeboat Mary Stanford, having confirmed by the habit of a noble service the courage handed down to them by their fathers, were quick to hear the cry of humanity above the roaring of the sea. In the darkness of their supreme hour they stayed not to weigh doubt or danger but freely offering their portion in this life for the ransom of men whom they had never known they went boldly into the last of all their storms. Their names are here recorded in acknowledgement that we have received in trust for England the memory of their faithfulness and loving kindness”.

At around 9am the mate of a passing ship, the S.S. Halton, reported seeing the Mary Stanford three miles WSW from Dungeness, and a little later a sailor on the Smyrna, the ship involved in the collison, reported the same. All appeared well. But at about 10.30am a boy, Cecil Marchant, collecting driftwood at Camber believed he saw, in a sudden shaft of sunlight, the lifeboat capsize. He ran home to tell his parents and promptly got a clip round the ear for making up stories. Although just in case this was true his father reported it to the coastguard. Almost immediately rumours ‘the Mary Stanford has gone over’ went round the village. By 12 noon it had been confirmed and the boat could be seen floating upside down towards the shore. Within ten minutes the maroons were fired and over one hundred people rushed to the beach where the upturned lifeboat lay. Over the next two hours the bodies of the crew were washed ashore. A total of fifteen that day. No effort was spared in trying to revive them but all had drowned. Henry Cutting’s body was washed ashore at Eastbourne three months later. The body of John Head has never been found. An Army tank from Lydd was brought to help right the lifeboat. WWW.ASPECT-COUNTY.CO.UK

EDUCATION

Celebrating Success Excellent exam results for A Level & GCSE students at Battle Abbey Once again Battle Abbey School are celebrating another fantastic year for both A Level and GCSE results. The A level candidates this year have not only achieved a 100% pass rate but just under two thirds came away with A and B passes, and 88% gained the top three grades. Special mention should go to John Snape who brought home a phenomenal 3 A* grades, dropping only two marks in this summer’s exams. Two Battle Abbey pupils will be heading to Oxford, others to Durham, Nottingham and Sussex and UCL. Two are moving on to Central St. Martins, one to Guildford College of Drama and one will be taking a place at the Royal Veterinary College, while another will be studying Medicine in Heidelberg. Other pupils will be going on to study Biochemistry, Music, Engineering, Teaching, Geography, History, Marketing, Psychology, Accounting, History, Sport Studies and Forensic Science among other subjects at a wide variety of Universities both in England, the United States and on the Continent. Roger Clark, Headmaster, said 'Great credit goes to our teachers, pupils and parents for their massive commitment to these achievements. With the tremendous increase in the number of applications to university this year, we are delighted with the success of our pupils.’ Lower down the School the GCSE results were perhaps even more impressive. Roger Clark said, 'This really is an incredibly strong set of GCSE results for us, and the staff and pupils are absolutely delighted. 92% of pupils achieved at least 8 A* – C grades. In fact 51% of all grades were either A or A*. Particular mention should go to Jo Hartnell who brought in 11 A* grades, Dani Edmunds and Bethany James with 10 A* grades and Daniel Snape who achieved 9 A* grades. In fact Dani Edmunds achieved an astonishing 99% in 6 of her subjects and an amazing 100% in one other.' Many pupils achieved a high number of A and A* grades. PETS

Hastings Is The New Destination For Stylish Dogs Forget Bond Street – these days the most discerning dogs are heading to the seaside town of Hastings for their retail therapy. Collared is a new boutique that brings together great accessories and gifts from all over the world for dogs and dog lovers. Taking a lead from the top shops for women’s fashion, Collared’s range of collars, leads and dog coats are edited into collections that reflect the latest trends and seasons. While it doesn’t compromise on style, the shop is on-trend without being off-putting. Owners are encouraged to visit with their dogs so that fun can be had trying on – every dog is different and what fits or suits one, won’t another. The atmosphere is relaxed and there is plenty of help on hand to find what’s right for each customer. Collared is crammed with gorgeous things, with collar and lead styles ranging from bright patent leather and luxe crystal, to waterbuffalo leather and traditional Argentinean stitch work. Also popular are pure wool jerseys from Australia, hand knits and coats designed in France and Italy, and Breton style fleeces made in the UK. Accessories include a wide range of beds, handmade pet blankets, ergonomic stainless steel food bowls and ‘green’ alternatives made from rice husks. With Christmas approaching, the shop has a new selection of Christmas toys for both dogs and cats including locally designed ‘Creature Comforts’ and ‘Peperami’ toy ranges. The key criterion for inclusion in the collection is style, as well as the tastes of its buyers and customers, as Collared’s Catherine Parr explains: “We put a lot of effort into sourcing great products, many from small specialist and international suppliers. We look for things that we really like – ultimately we make a judgement based on what we would choose for our own dogs.” Collared is already becoming well known for its new take on dog retailing and has regular customers from London and across the South East as well as those living more locally. Find Collared on the corner of seafront and Robertson street, Hastings. Call 01424 719918 or visit www.collareddog.co.uk.

Dog Owners Should Exercise Caution In Icy Conditions The recent report of a woman who narrowly escaped death when she plunged into a freezing river in Clitheroe, Lancashire to save her pet dog is not unusual at this time of year warns the UK’s leading rural insurer NFU Mutual. Across the UK, reports of dogs falling into frozen lakes, rivers and canals are increasing in frequency as the icy weather tightens its grip and even more worrying are reports of pet owners and members of the public placing themselves in danger by jumping in to frozen water in an attempt to rescue stranded animals. It is best to keep dogs on a lead when walking close to open bodies of water such as lakes, ponds and canals and to carry a mobile phone with them in case they, or their dog get into difficulties. It is also keen to remind pet owners that dogs are just as likely as their owners to slip and injure themselves in cold, icy conditions.

The first cold snap often heralds an increase in claims for dogs slipping and injuring themselves on ice; and, with the average cost for a claim of this nature totalling £2,000, many pet owners without pet insurance could be left out in the cold this winter if they can’t find the funds to pay for treatment. Commenting on the importance of pet insurance, Justine Simms-Gould, General Insurance Underwriter at NFU Mutual, said: “Veterinary treatment continues to be an area of high claims, both in terms of numbers and costs. With that in mind, any money an owner may save by cancelling or failing to renew a policy could prove to be a false economy when compared to the expense of meeting bills for serious conditions or accidents.” To help dog owners keep themselves and their pet safe and sound this winter, here are some top tips to follow. - Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and take it with you every time you walk your dog - Keep you dog/s on the lead when walking close to open water and don’t throw sticks or balls close to frozen water - If your dog does fall through the ice don’t go onto the ice to rescue them; if the ice wasn’t strong enough to support your pet’s weight it won’t be able to support your weight. - Call the emergency services.

GARDENING

Fall Into Action Prepare your landscape for Winter! When autumn's cooler weather approaches, we bundle up to protect ourselves against the changing weather. We begin to winterize our homes by adding insulation to drafty windows and doorways. As the days get shorter, our number of chores about the house seem to increase. However, maintenance to the home is just the beginning of preparations for colder weather to come. Our trees need care to prepare for colder months as well.

Prune your trees. Fall is a good time to prune your trees. Not only are trees dormant in the colder months, but it is also easier to see a tree's structure when there are no leaves on the branches. "Proper pruning is vital to the health of trees and plants, in part because it helps relieve stress on trees and keeps them growing," says Skiera. "Just be aware that each tree is different, and pruning at the wrong time or the wrong way can injure a tree making it more susceptible."

"While your trees seem to be in a state of hibernation in the winter, exposure to the tough conditions can cause them major stress," says Jim Skiera, Executive Director of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). "Minimize stress by helping your trees through the cold months, a little at a time. If you take care of your trees in the winter, you'll be rewarded in the spring."

Plant now. Since autumn is the time of year for colourful, falling leaves, many people do not realize that it is also a prime time to plant new trees. After cooler weather has set in, conditions are perfect for stimulating root growth in new trees. Once roots are established throughout the fall and dormancy of winter, spring showers and summer warmth encourage new top growth. Fall is the optimum time to plant balled and burlapped trees and shrubs. However, all bare root plants should be planted later in the season, when they are completely dormant. Heres the best way to prepare and plant a new tree this winter:

We recommend the following tips for preparing trees for colder weather: Rely on mulch. Put composted organic mulch under your tree in the early winter to help retain water and reduce temperature extremes in the soil. A thin layer of mulch will act like a blanket and give the tree's roots a little extra protection. Give your trees a drink. Winter droughts require watering as much as summer droughts. If temperatures permit, an occasional watering during the winter on young trees can be a lifesaver. But be sure to water when soil and trees are cool but not frozen.

- For bare root trees, neatly cut away any broken or damaged roots. Soak the roots for a few hours prior to planting to allow them to absorb water. - Container-grown trees should have the plastic or metal containers removed completely. - Carefully cut through the circling roots. Remove the top half of pressed peat/paper containers.

Fertilize them, too. Urban landscape trees can be growing in soils that do not contain sufficient available nutrients for satisfactory growth and development. Fertilizing a tree can improve growth; however, if fertilizer is not applied wisely, it may not benefit the tree at all and may even adversely affect the tree. Mature trees making satisfactory growth may not require fertilization. When considering supplemental fertilizer, it is important to know which nutrients are needed and when and how they should be applied. Soil conditions, especially pH and organic matter content, vary greatly, making the proper selection and use of fertilizer a somewhat complex process. When dealing with a mature tree that provides considerable benefit and value to your landscape, it is worth the time and investment to have the soil tested for nutrient content. Any arborist can arrange to have your soil tested at a soil testing laboratory and can give advice on application rates, timing, and the best blend of fertilizer for each of your trees and other landscape plants.

- Balled and Burlapped ("B&B") trees should have all the ropes cut. Pull the burlap at least one third of the way down and slit the remaining burlap to encourage root growth. If in a wire basket, cut away the top of the basket.

Prevent mechanical injuries. Branch breakage or splitting can be caused by ice and snow accumulation or chewing and rubbing by animals. You may prevent problems with young trees by wrapping their base in a hard, plastic guard or a metal hardware cloth. Wrapping trees with burlap or plastic cloth also can prevent temperature damage. However, it is important to remember to remove the wraps and guards in the spring to prevent damage when the tree begins to grow. Other damage can be caused when ploughing or shovelling snow. Be mindful of trees nearby. Damage to limbs and trunks from plough blades or a sharp shovel can be detrimental to trees.

- Partially backfill with the soil from the hole, using water to settle the soil. Finish backfilling the hole while gently but firmly packing the soil. Be sure that you leave the trunk flare (where the roots spread at the base of the tree) visible above the soil.

- Remove all tags and labels. Planting the Tree - Dig the planting hole shallow and broad. The width should be two to three times the diameter of the root ball and the depth only as deep as the root ball. - Gently place the tree in the hole, ensuring that it is perpendicular to the ground. Once you begin to backfill, it will be difficult to reposition the tree.

- Soak the soil well, making sure no air pockets form between the roots. Wait until next year to fertilize. For more information on fall and winter tree care, or to find an ISA Certified Arborist, visitwww.treesaregood.org.

AC159 - Lamborghini Gallardo Edit#_Aspect County 15/11/2011 12:18 Page 10

MOTORING

Light, Fast, Powerful, Angry Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Lighter, faster, more powerful and much angrier, the £186,000 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante is essentially a topless Superleggera. Taking its lead from the Superleggera Coupe, the Performante sheds weight though extensive use of carbon fibre, both on the exterior panels and interior fittings. The high-tech material contributes 40 per cent of the Performante’s overall weight saving of 65kg. Paddle-shift transmission and carbon brakes are standard, and the new Superleggera-style rims save another 13kg. A remapped ECU reduces emissions and yields an additional 10bhp, lifting peak outputs to 570bhp and 398lb ft of torque. That’s sufficient for a 0-62mph time of 3.9sec and a top speed of 201mph. It’s easy to be sniffy about the pure driving credentials of a convertible car, especially one derived from such a specialist machine as the Gallardo Superleggera. Then you see the Performante and it’s impossible not to get caught-up in the drama and excitement. The noise, as ever, is remarkable. In terms of ear-splitting volume and animalistic aggression there’s nothing to touch this raucous V10. Even with the roof up it’s a truly epic experience, but it’s when you drop the roof that the Performante plays its trump card. If you want the full-on surroundsound supercar experience you can find it here. The e-gear transmission is rapidly being left behind by the latest generation double-clutch technology, but it feels less clunky than it used to at low speed. When you drive the Performante as Lamborghini intended the shifts become increasingly brutal: in Corsa mode they are quick but about as subtle as a punch in the face. A slight lift smoothes the upshifts. Up in the mountains the Performante is truly in its element, its tortured howls and snargles ricocheting off the rock faces. Its grippy Pirelli tyres cling on hard, but also deliver progressive on-limit feel. The carbon brakes can be grabby, but work well when you’re pushing them hard. Lambo’s signature all-wheel drive is a bonus, allowing you to use more of the V10’s abundant poke than you’d ever imagine. And when you find a sweet hairpin it’ll let you have some fun if you’re prepared to provoke it. Until Ferrari launches a 458 Spider there’s nothing quite like the Performante. The Superleggera is its biggest rival, but the sensory overload delivered when the Performante’s roof is dropped provides a very effective distraction from the tactile shortcomings of its Coupe brother. It’s perhaps not the done thing to admit this, but I’d take a Performante over a Superleggera, for it gives you more to enjoy without taking anything away.

100 Years Of Heritage Adrian Caddy experiences the joys of the Morgan 3 Wheeler

Given the choice of ALL the car manufacturers in the world who have been under the same ownership for more than 100 years – you have a list of one.

no power-steering, no sat-nav, no cruise control, no roof, no side windows, no doors, – but if you’re caught out in truly heavy rain, there ARE drain holes in the floor.

The Morgan Motor Company of Malvern Link, Worcestershire started out under the clever and determined hands of H.F.S. Morgan in 1909, whose son Peter took the reins in 1958. Both founding father and son had the ‘innovation’ gene in tons. Launching the company with a threewheeled “Cycle-Car” H.F.S. added more to the range of V-twin, 2-seat, 3-wheelers before taking the revolutionary step of adding a fourth wheel in 1936. 32 years later his son took the 4-wheeled Morgan that was almost a twin of the 1936 4-cylinder car, and squeezed a Rover V-8 engine under the folding bonnet halves. The press and the sports car buying public went mad for the Morgan Plus 8 and the waiting list grew, and grew...

So if you are happy to pay almost £30,000 for a road-going gem of Spartan character – you will be investing in more Fun than your motoring dreams can imagine. That V-twin engine is built by Harley-Davidson and it is linked to a 5-speed (+ reverse) gearbox from the Mazda MX5. No need for advanced maths to remember the engine configuration – 2 cylinders, 2 litres. These squeeze 115 brake horses down the thick, heavy drive-belt to the back wheel and together they can move the pilot of this open-cockpit beauty from zero to 60mph in a whisker above 4.5 seconds. The big silly grin arrives even quicker and lasts until the driver returns to a state of ‘normal’ motoring.

Peter’s son Charles – a cameraman with ITN – joined the family business in 19 and with his father added to Morgan fame by arguing passionately against BBC Troubleshooter host John Harvey-Jones. Sir John suggested the company HAD to change vast amounts of its manufacturing process – or go under. Peter and Charles disagreed and the waiting list, after the programme went on air, grew even longer. As the second decade of the 21st century marches on, Charles’ eye for innovation and detail keeps Morgan firmly in healthy profit with a range of vehicles that would all astound his grandfather; except the one in these pictures. Welcome back, the Morgan 3 Wheeler – with a list of ‘not available’ in its sales brochure almost as long as the queue of buyers for this remarkable piece of motoring history. This two-seater comes with a V-twin engine, a five-speed gearbox (plus reverse this time – in 1909 there wasn’t one), two small fixed aeroscreens, and..well – two seats, three wheels, lights... that’s about it. This is an indulgence first and a practical motor vehicle second, or maybe third... The Morgan 3 Wheeler has no sound system, no air-conditioning, 96

No Morgan is normal. They are built by individual craftsmen and women working as a cohesive team – often in front of audiences. And these individuals build for other individuals who expect (demand?) character and a sense of history in their vehicles. You order a Morgan and you can go to the Factory and watch it come to life stage by stage – with your name on the build-label. Nobody has been able to watch a Morgan 3 Wheeler pass through the workshop since 1952, so sixty years on and the little beauty is back with fuel injection and just a few necessary optional extras to allow 21st century Morganeers to take theirs directly to racetracks or hill climbs (sticky tape for the headlights not provided). Driving the roofless, windowless wonder on public roads is a thorough joy. Everything is direct and uncomplicated. Apart from the engine management system, all the functions are obvious to anyone with a little mechanical knowledge. No power steering is needed – the 3 Wheeler goes round corners, hairpins and roundabouts with so much ease it’s almost laughable. The road-holding and acceleration combination reminded me of the revolutionary Audi Quattro from the early 1980s – but with lower running costs. Only one tyre is driven and the low weight and careful tuning of that big V-twin help Morgan achieve their low CO2 emissions. Ever since Charles Morgan’s grandfather started putting “cycle-cars” on the road (before World War 1) the attention of the car-

building Morgan dynasty has been firmly on low weight, for both sporting performance and fuel efficiency. In the very earliest of days in the automotive industry, H.F.S. Morgan was so keen to lighten the chassis weight that he used the exhaust pipes of the first V-twin engines as part of the body frame… These were experimental times – and the corrosive effect of exhaust gases was not fully known, until a few drivers found that a blown exhaust pipe could mean a sudden lowering of ride height..! Not only the oldest car builder in their class – but one of the Greenest thinking of them all. Before dawn on the day the 3 Wheeler had to return to Malvern from East Sussex, I climbed in to the cockpit, lifted the switch cover on the dashboard to reveal the starter button, ignition on, clutch pedal in, mirrors checked – I almost wanted to yell “chocks away” to the imaginary ground crew... The Harley lump fired up and away we went towards the ancient beauty of Battle and the pre-rush hour dash up the A21 to the M25. As the sky brightened I could poke a camera over the dash or outside the aluminium body side to catch a photo or two. Soon all I would have would be the memories of this enthralling wee beast, and a new habit. Every time I recall that long tightly coiled slip road with a hard-braking Range Rover Sport on the inside lane – I grin. This little Morgan went round the outside at about 65mph in 4th, and I could see the Range Rover driver’s jaw drop at the sight of the rapidly disappearing motoring rarity. A sort of rugged, noisy, mad magic carpet... This Morgan is another absolute winner - even before it enters the competition world. Best call the nearest dealer and order one immediately. If you’re lucky, yours could be providing more joy than Santa’s sleigh by Christmas 2012. Specifications at time of writing are still to be finalised – more details will become available from www.morgan3wheeler.co.uk

AC159 - Jaguar XJ Sport_Aspect County 16/11/2011 10:18 Page 10

MOTORING

Elegance & Drama Jaguar XJ Sport Jaguar's award-winning flagship XJ saloon – which combines elegance, drama and sporting prowess – is now available with optional Sport and Speed Packs to further emphasise the performance aspect of its character. With the XJ, Jaguar has created an entirely new template for the luxury performance saloon. The XJ seamlessly blends sporting potential, dynamic driving abilities and luxurious appointments; a class-leading combination that has gathered plaudits worldwide. The Sport and Speed packs further unlock the performance potential of the XJ both aesthetically and dynamically. The Sport Pack – available throughout the XJ range – comprises a number of exterior and interior design options that clearly underline the assertive side of the car’s personality. Externally the appearance of the XJ has been made even more dramatic with the addition of aerodynamically optimised changes to the bodywork and an alloy wheel design specific to the Sport Pack. The functional aerodynamic changes of the Sport Pack allow supercharged XJ models to be additionally offered with the Speed Pack, which raises the limited top speed from 155mph (250km/h) to 174mph (280km/h). The elegantly integrated design changes that comprise the Sport Pack are not simply cosmetic, they allow Jaguar to offer the Speed Pack option, transforming the supercharged XJ models into the fastest saloons the company has ever built. The result of extensive research in the wind tunnel and on track, the front of the car gains an aerodynamic splitter beneath the bumper to direct air beneath the car to reduce lift, and at the rear the bootlid lip has been extended to ensure a clean separation of air from the trailing edge of the bodywork. While ensuring optimal stability at high-speed, the Sport Pack maintains the standard XJ's sleek 0.29Cd aerodynamic figure. These changes have been reinforced with a number of cosmetic additions that clearly distinguish the Sport Pack-equipped cars from other models. The bold Jaguar radiator grille, a key feature in the XJ's assertive face with its strong 'rear view mirror recognition' factor gains a gloss black mesh finish with the same treatment applied to the lower air opening and side vents. Red painted brake callipers emblazoned with the Jaguar name are mounted behind new 20-inch 'Venom' alloy wheels with a diamondturned sparkle silver finish to their eye-catching five splitspoke design. Newly designed split twin tailpipes (not available from launch) will leave other drivers in no doubt as to what car has just passed them.

Reflecting the exterior styling changes and befitting its performance oriented remit, the XJ Sport Pack offers interior changes that give driver and passengers a heightened sense of occasion and an indication of the dynamic abilities available. The front seats are Jaguar's Performance version, which offer superb support for spirited driving. Trimmed in softgrain leather these offer a huge range of adjustment – including the enlarged side bolsters – to create a perfectly tailored driving position. Active ventilation supplies heated or chilled air as required to each individual front seat. At the driver's feet sit purposeful machined stainless steel pedals engraved with the Jaguar name. The rear seats have been trimmed to match the front pair and the Sport specification will be offered in two purposeful colourways of Jet over Jet or Jet over Ivory. The eye-catching Piano Black trim that highlights certain touch surfaces in the XJ is contrasted in the Sport specification by subtly applied carbon-fibre highlights. The XJ benefits from superb aerodynamics and Jaguar's innovative lightweight aluminium architecture to offer weight savings of up to 150kg over its competitors. This offers tangible benefits in terms of economy, emissions, driving dynamics, agility and, of course, performance. The Sport Pack is available on nearly all engine variants, including the muscular twin-turbo diesel, market-specific 3.0 V6 petrol and naturallyaspirated 5.0-litre AJ-V8 where it serves to emphasise the sporting character and driver involvement that are core strengths of every XJ model. On supercharged AJ-V8 models, the Sport pack can be combined with the Speed Pack, which raises the electronically limited maximum speed from 155mph (250km/h) to 174mph (280km/h). With such prodigious power already available from the supercharged petrol engines, no increase was necessary to achieve the higher top speed. The only changes necessary were a recalibrated engine management system, reworked software for the innovative virtual instrument display and adjustment to the tyre pressure monitoring system to take into account the heat generated by sustained high-speed motoring.
