Celebrating Art Beyond the Windows
W
alking along the streets of Aspen, it’s impossible to overlook the windows packed with paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, prints, glass works, and ceramics. Aspen’s cultural history began 62 years ago with visionaries like Walter and Elizabeth
Paepcke, along with Mortimer J. Adler. Later in the fifties and sixties came Herbert Bayer and Ferenc Berko, followed by John Powers and Anderson Ranch founder Mary Sister Martin, to name a few. And though these individuals came from different parts of the globe, their arrival in Aspen found them sharing a common goal: to establish the cultural foundation that continues to be the pulse of our small mountain town. Their lineage, in the form of places and events such as the Aspen Institute, Music Festival, Art Museum, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center, secured Aspen’s spot in the avant-garde of the art world. Now that it’s summer—when Aspen’s music, dance, and art blossom—we take time to celebrate not only our roots but also those who continue to make Aspen a cultural destination without compare.

1949: The Goethe Bicentennial, a convocation in celebration of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “idea of a man,” is held in the decaying mining town of Aspen. Speakers include Albert Schweitzer, José Ortega y Gasset, Robert Maynard Hutchins, Thornton Wilder, and Thomas Mann. —Eero Saarinen’s famous music tent is erected. — Walter Paepcke creates the University of Aspen.
1951: Walter Paepcke holds the first Aspen Conference on Design. Josef Albers, Charles Eames, Buckminster Fuller, Louis Kahn, and Richard Neutra attend. — The Institute sponsors the first U.S. photography conference. Attendees include Minor White, Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Laura Gilpin, Herbert Bayer, and Ferenc Berko.
1950: The University of Aspen becomes the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies. Paepcke serves as its first president.
1955: Herbert Bayer completes Grass Mound, the first earthworks for the grounds at the Aspen Institute.
— Mortimer J. Adler holds a “Great Books” lecture and seminar in the Wheeler Opera House.
1960: Walter Paepcke dies of cancer, leaving behind a dream to create a museum of living architecture.
— The Aspen Summer Music Festival is formed, as is the Film Classic Program, the first such festival in America.

1965: With the influence of John Powers, the Institute establishes an artist-in-residence program, with a strong collection of contemporary art. Residents included Friedel Dzubas, Larry Poons, James Rosenquist, Allan D’Arcangelo, Charles Hinman, and Gerald Laing.
— For the next five years, Aspen hosts many of the most important American artists of the day, representing contemporary movements and developments such as Happenings, Pop Art, Minimalism, Conceptualism, and Process Art. 1966: Ceramic artist Paul Soldner begins using a ranch in Snowmass Village as the site for studios. In 1973, the property becomes the nonprofit Anderson Ranch Arts Center, attracting major figures including Wendell Castle, Robert Mangold, and James Rosenquist.
1975: Dick Carter, Laura “Missie” Thorne, and Diane Lewy organize the Aspen Arts Festival, encompassing a film festival, concerts, picnics, and children’s programs. 1967: The Aspen Center for Contemporary Art, a “museum without walls,” with John Powers as president, forms in the Brand Building. First-season residents include Pop artists Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg, Conceptual artist Les Levine, and Postminimalist Robert Morris. 1968: Cherie Hiser founds Center of the Eye, a photography workshop/residency program whose instructors include Paul Caponigro, Bruce Davidson, Lee Friedlander, and Jerry Uelsmann. 1972: Christo and Jeanne-Claude secure the final ties on Valley Curtain—142,000 square feet of woven nylon fabric spanning 1,368 feet—in Rifle, CO.
1979: Under the direction of Carter, Thorne, and Lewy, the former hydroelectric power station on the Roaring Fork River is renovated and becomes the Aspen Center for the Visual Arts (ACVA). Philip Yenawine becomes its program director. 1984: ACVA changes its name to the Aspen Art Museum, and in the summer of 1985 the museum forms a National Council. Looking Forward: The new Aspen Art Museum designed by renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban is targeted to open sometime in 2013 in downtown Aspen.
