From artistic and educational triumphs to record-breaking levels of financial support, 2015 was a watershed year for the Aspen Music Festival and School, full of highlights both on and off stage. The summer season, with the theme Dreams of Travel, saw increased audiences join us on a musical exploration of composers fascinated by far off lands either visited or imagined. Students from more than forty countries and states journeyed to Aspen to partake in an unsurpassed summer of music-making in the mountains. Annual Fund giving from individual donors broke $4 million for the very first time, while giving to the Where Dreams Begin campaign exceeded $63 million, drawing us closer to our fundraising goal. Earlier in March, the Board of Trustees approved the recommendations of our Long-Range Plan Committee, initiated to identify priorities and opportunities to guide the Festival toward a new level of excellence in the next five years. Almost every aspect of how we operate was examined. We now have concrete plans to improve the experience of our students, artist-faculty, and audience. The AMFS will increase scholarships, explore new initiatives locally and abroad, and serve as a meeting ground for discussion about important issues arising in the world of music.

ASPEN MUSIC FESTIVAL AND SCHOOL

And over the course of the academic year, budding instrumentalists and singers throughout the Roaring Fork Valley received sustained instruction on their instruments, all part of our commitment to the year-round community in which we live.

02

Sadly, Steven Stucky and Donald Drapkin, both cherished members of our Board of Trustees, passed away in February 2016. Steven was a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, a leader in our composition program, and a mentor to musicians worldwide. Don was a true philanthropist to organizations in both Aspen and New York and a close personal friend. Both left an indelible mark on the Festival and School and will be sorely missed. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for helping us make the Aspen Music Festival and School the preeminent summer music experience in the world.

Robert J. Hurst Chair, Board of Trustees

As I look back over ten expanding, edifying, enchanting summers of music in Aspen, I see that what sets Aspen apart is aspiration. Every individual here—from longtime faculty to first-time students, to patrons, volunteers, staff, and more—continually reaches for more. Every awe-inspiring concert spurs us to another. Every brilliant student inspires us to find new ways to encourage their growth. Every transcendent season energizes us for the next one. In 2015, we saw alumni like Tamara Wilson return to Aspen from her recent success at the Metropolitan Opera and give a performance of Aida in the Tent to rival those of any of the world’s opera houses. We launched new series like concerts in the beautiful rooftop space at the Aspen Art Museum and the Science of Music series that examined neuroscience in music and the sound of Stradivarii. We taught more local schoolchildren than ever, and saw in their eyes that music was changing some of them forever. As you read through this report, which captures some of the joy and importance that was the 2015 AMFS season, remember that it is you, too, that carries the passion that makes Aspen special. I thank you and, in that, am proud to stand with you.

Just after my tenth summer leading the Aspen Music Festival and School, I am reflecting on what makes the AMFS truly extraordinary. Those who experience it know that it is, but why? Is it the prodigious talent? Yes, but not only. Is it the breathtaking surroundings? Yes, but not only. Is it the singular community of support that makes so much possible? Yes, but not only.

ARTISTIC HIGHLIGHTS

DRAMATIC SUCCESSES

WITH THE THEME OF DREAMS OF TRAVEL, THE SUMMER’S MUSIC TOOK AUDIENCES ON MANY JOURNEYS.

ASPEN MUSIC FESTIVAL AND SCHOOL

Those journeys spanned centuries, from Telemann and Boccherini in Nicholas McGegan’s Baroque evening to the recently completed On a winter’s night a traveler by AMFS President and CEO Alan Fletcher (pictured below) and the stage premiere of the contemporary opera The Classical Style. They spanned continents, from the Argentine flair of Piazzolla’s tango opera María de Buenos Aires to undiscovered Russian masters brought to light by Vladimir Feltsman. They spanned emotional extremes, from the ebullient adventures described by Scheherazade in Rimsky-Korsakov’s version of the work in the opening Sunday concert, to the depth of human darkness in Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 in the closing Sunday concert.

04

Scores more programs showcased the work of core composers such as Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, and Rachmaninoff. In its signature style, the AMFS again offered a season of unsurpassed richness and depth.

The performance of Aida in the Benedict Music Tent was a night to remember. AMFS alumna Tamara Wilson owned the night, after having done so in the same role on stage at the Metropolitan Opera just eight months earlier. Audiences packed the house for contemporary opera The Classical Style by AMFS composition artist-faculty member Steven Stucky and alumnus and pianist-turned-librettist Jeremy Denk. The cast of Così fan tutte blew audiences away and the sassy 1950s set and costumes, with hotcolored lighting by Lloyd Sobel, was a sensation. The production drew raves from critics, including Patricia Zorn for The Huffington Post.

ARTISITC HIGHLIGHTS

ON THE MAINSTAGE AMFS alumnus Joshua Bell has played in Aspen since he was fifteen years old, but in 2015 he conducted here for the first time, showing great musicianship and physicality while leading the orchestra without podium, baton, or score. Three thousand concert-goers, in the house and on the David Karetsky Music Lawn, flocked for this experience—and weren’t disappointed.

ASPEN MUSIC FESTIVAL AND SCHOOL

• Making their Aspen debuts were brilliant young talents such as pianists Shai Wosner and Yundi. Also making his debut was Rafael Payare, a conductor fast on the rise who shares a special connection to Aspen: his wife is famed alumna Alisa Weilerstein and his in-laws are conductor Joshua Weilerstein and Aspen artist-faculty Donald and Vivian Hornik Weilerstein.

MORE MOMENTS Steve Mackey was present to hear Orli Shaham play his tender work “Stumble to Grace,” written for Shaham about something she and Mackey have both experienced recently: the wonder of watching your own child learn to walk. A highly successful collaboration between Belly Up Aspen and the AMFS was the post-season, one-nightonly Prairie Home Companion show, showcasing Garrison Keillor in his final season of touring with the show before retiring. In a nod to the AMFS, Keillor wrote and sang an entire song about student percussionist Justin Kelly, who gave the three hammer blows in Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, which was played the day before by the Aspen Festival Orchestra. Two new series created many wonderful moments: the Science of Music lecture series, presented with the Aspen Science Center, and “Music with a View,” a student concert series in the beautiful rooftop space at the Shigeru Ban-designed Aspen Art Museum. • Sharon Isbin again drew overflowing crowds to her program titled “Guitar Passions,” performed with fellow guitarists Stanley Jordan and Romero Lubambo.

Classically trained indie singer-violinist Kishi Bashi has blazed his own musical path using his voice, violin, and a loop pedal. His performance at Belly Up Aspen, which was a collaboration between the nightclub and the AMFS, was a smashing success.

2015 ANNUAL REPORT

Magnetic Italian tenor Vittorio Grigòlo performed a spectacular operatic recital in the Tent. One of the world’s most discerning opera patrons and an AMFS patron, Mrs. Mercedes T. Bass, personally invited Grigòlo to come to Aspen and, as a gift to the community, made it possible.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE DAVID FINCKEL AND WU HAN TEACH A MASTER CLASS IN HARRIS CONCERT HALL.

MILESTONES AND MOMENTS S ixteen-year-old student Tengku Irfan was spotlighted in an Aspen Chamber Symphony concert, playing the piano part in Messiaen’s Oiseaux exotiques. Aspen Times reviewer Harvey Steiman noted he “played the extensive piano part with admirable crispness and flair.”

• To accompany the popular American Academy of Conducting at Aspen free concerts, Music Director Robert Spano gave a new series of free talks on conducting and a free conducting master class featuring Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

Artist-faculty members Nancy Goeres, bassoon; Sharon Isbin, guitar; and John Rojak, bass trombone, all reached their twenty-fifth year in Aspen and were honored at a ceremony during which their names were added to a plaque in the Benedict Music Tent. They join the seventy-six who have served for twenty-five years or more since the Festival began in 1949. Together the honorees represent a colossal 2,535 years of service to the AMFS, with nearly half still on faculty today.

• New artist-faculty members in 2015 included Anneleen Lenaerts, harp; Donald Weilerstein, violin; and Vivian Hornik Weilerstein, piano. Guest composers-in-residence in Aspen in 2015 included Shulamit Ran, Christopher Rouse, and Christopher Theofanidis.

MEDIA AND BROADCASTS In 2015, the AMFS continued its longstanding relationships with American Public Media’s Performance Today, hosted by Fred Child, and NPR’s From the Top, hosted by acclaimed pianist Christopher O’Riley. Together, these programs reached more than 2 million listeners with AMFS programming. Symphony magazine celebrated the longevity of the AMFS as part of its Spring 2015 article, “Summer Music Festivals, Then and Now,” and featured the AMFS on its cover. Houston Public Media station Classical 91.7 featured the AMFS in its “Classical Classroom” series, transporting Houston listeners to the 2015 AMFS season through several episodes that featured Alan Fletcher, Robert McDuffie, Alisa Weilerstein, and more. Yahoo! Travel included the AMFS as one of the “10 Reasons Why Aspen is Definitely Better in the Summer,” while the Chicago Tribune recommended the AMFS as a summer music festival “that stands out from the pack.”

The AMFS’s community education initiatives were front and center in an Aspen Times Weekend Entertainment Guide cover story, exploring the Maroon Bel Canto Children’s Chorus, Lead Guitar, and Beginning Strings programs. NPR’s Tom Huizenga urged audiences to “Get Out and Hear Some New Music This Summer,” and spotlighted the Aspen Opera Theater Center’s double-bill of The Classical Style and The Cows of Apollo (or, the Invention of Music) on his shortlist of worthy events.

BENEFITS Benefit evenings over the 2015 season together netted $670,118 in support of the Festival and School’s programs. The annual Season Benefit—A Feast of Music, honoring Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson—was held on August 3 at the Hotel Jerome. Chaired by Toby Devan Lewis, this crowd-pleasing event paired gourmet fare with wonderful music and featured performances by violinist Gil Shaham, guitarist Sharon Isbin, and AMFS alumna soprano Tamara Wilson, among others. On July 20, the AMFS held its 12th Annual Opera Benefit. The black-tie evening began with an exclusive cocktail party at the home of Benefit Chair Richard Edwards, continued on to dinner at the renowned, members-only Caribou Club, and concluded with a dedicated performance of Charles Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, performed by the rising stars from the Aspen Opera Theater Center. Other special benefit events in 2015 included the Winter Benefit on March 13, featuring pianist Vladimir Feltsman, the Aida Celebration Dinner, and several Artist Dinners and House Music concerts throughout the summer. The 2015 Artist Dinners featured three spectacular guest artists: Daniel Hope, violin; Vittorio Grigòlo, tenor; and Nikolai Lugansky, piano. Guests enjoyed an intimate evening of cocktails, music, and great food, all while getting to know these remarkable musicians. ON RIGHT, FROM TOP TO BOTTOM

CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION PHASE II

ASPEN MUSIC FESTIVAL AND SCHOOL

Bulldozers rolled onto the Matthew and Carolyn Bucksbaum Campus just four days after the end of the 2015 summer Festival, on August 27, 2015. The first order of business was to demolish the non-historic old buildings to make way for the new. Gone quickly were the classroom buildings, “Isolde” studio, and maintenance buildings that were past the ponds on the far side of Campus. As soon as the debris was cleared, foundation work began—digging and driving metal rods called micropiles down deep into the earth and rock. Repairs began on the historic building known as the Gordon Hardy Administration Building, including jacking up a corner of the foundation nine inches to make it level, and site infrastructure went in, such as the extension of the water line.

22

In the span of just nine months—in time for the 2016 season— the Campus will have been transformed with fourteen new buildings, including the AMFS’s largest rehearsal hall, more studios for teaching and practicing, a new dining hall, and professional office space. To see the process, visit www.bucksbaumcampus.org.

REVENUE AND EXPENSES

In 2015, the AMFS continued to make investments in quality programming and teaching as outlined in our Long-Range Plan. While these initiatives required certain investment of operating funds, we balanced these new expenses with fundraising and cost cutting in other areas. This delicate balance resulted in a small surplus for 2015.

STUDENT ENROLLMENT Student enrollment was at 617 in 2015 as compared to 626 in 2014. Our Long-Range plan calls for significant increases in student aid and these funds began to increase in 2015, more significant increases are planned for 2016. The Long-Range Plan also called for increased investment in chamber music. This required a financial investment in increased quartet residencies as well as increased payments for group coachings.

Total contributions increased by 4.3 percent in 2015. These increases were due to increases in new donors as well as new, dedicated fundraising from existing donors. This increase was achieved as we simultaneously raise funds for the capital and endowment Where Dreams Begin Campaign. The 2015 annual benefit, A Feast of Music, was wildly successful and left our donors excited for future events.

INVESTMENT INCOME The AMFS’s endowment policy is to draw 5 percent of a 36-month rolling average, net of fees, for operating expenses, scholarships, artist-faculty salaries, and other designated uses. The AMFS’s invested endowment had a return of -1.3 percent for fiscal year 2015 to end at a balance of $61.5 million. In the past ten years, the AMFS’s average annual return was 4.6 percent as compared to the S&P average annual return of 6.8 percent. For both the one- and the ten-year period, the AMFS’s return was achieved with significantly lower standard deviation as compared to the broader S&P 500.
