letter from the president and CEO The 2013 season stands out as a historic one for the Aspen Music Festival and School. The opening of the Matthew and Carolyn Bucksbaum Campus represents not only a vast step forward in the institution’s infrastructure but also a bold statement about its commitment to excellence now and in its future. The AMFS is indeed a place of dreams, as referenced in our campaign name of “Where Dreams Begin.” Aspen’s extraordinarily generous supporters believe in making dreams possible for young musicians with fragile, developing, but powerful talents; as well as for audiences looking for sophisticated, nuanced, and wide-ranging programming. Aspen is unique in what it brings to the music world, as a look back through the 2013 season in this annual report illuminates. I remain deeply grateful for the faculty, artists, donors, patrons, staff, volunteers, and community members who give their all to make the Aspen Magic happen each summer.

2013 shining moments on stage The 2013 season offered a veritable feast of musical delicacies with riveting performances delivered by student musicians, artist-faculty, and guest artists alike. With a theme of “Conscience and Beauty,” the season focused on the powerful compositions musicians have penned as social commentary with a special emphasis on the genius of Benjamin Britten. More than twenty-five works by Britten were programmed throughout the season. One of the outstanding highlights of the Festival’s 2013 season—some called it the Festival highlight of the decade, others called it out as the best performance they had ever seen at the Festival—was the semi-staged performance
on July 27 of Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes. Maestro Spano led the Aspen Festival Orchestra along with Anthony Dean Griffey as Peter Grimes and Susanna Phillips as Ellen Oxford, and Brian Mulligan, Meredith Arwardy, students from the Aspen Opera Theater Center, and the 100-voice Colorado Symphony Chorus. AOTC Director Edward Berkeley’s spare concept and direction were especially powerful when combined with the light drizzle that began to fall on the Tent toward the end of the production, as if on cue. Other concerts of note include a performance by the Emerson String Quartet, in its thirty-seventh season as an ensemble, playing with its new cellist Paul Watkins. Of the performance in Harris Concert Hall on August 8 of Beethoven’s first “Razumovsky” quartet, Haydn’s String Quartet in G minor, and Britten’s String Quartet No. 3, Watkins commented that as a longtime admirer of the Quartet, realizing he is actually in the Quartet “makes me want to smile the whole time.” Musicians and audience were similarly enraptured with this evening. Another new face on Aspen stages was the magnificent soprano and reigning Metropolitan Opera star of the moment Joyce DiDonato, who was electrifying as she sang arias and art songs in the intimate space of Harris Concert Hall on July 23. Another first was Aspen’s own alumnus violinist Gil Shaham performing Bach’s Complete Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin on July 24. A marathon evening, Aspen Times reviewer Harvey Steiman called it “an irresistible outpouring of gorgeous sound and glory.”

Two Russians each wowed audiences: Van Cliburn Competition Gold Medalist Vadym Kholodenko, 26, whose recital on August 15 included several rarely heard Rachmaninoff transcriptions of works by Bach, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky; and Daniil Trifonov, whose commanding performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major, “Jeunehomme,” on August 16 caused audience members to leap to their feet.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of Harris Concert Hall, there was a special concert on August 13 featuring classical guitarist Sharon Isbin, violinist Robert McDuffie, and conductor Joshua Weilerstein (a recent participant in the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen program). Supporters enjoyed a beautiful reception ahead of time featuring a film capturing the thoughts of Aspen musicians, some of whom have played in the hall for decades, with comments like “an acoustical marvel” and “one of the world’s great halls.”

On the same program, a beautiful moment of music and friendship was realized in the lyrical Bassoon Concerto written by AMFS President and CEO Alan Fletcher for longtime artist-faculty member Nancy Goeres who performed its premiere in Pittsburgh and reprised it in Aspen.

Pages could be filled describing the musical delights of the 53 days and nights of the 2013 Festival—the unique multi-media blend of music and physics in Brian Greene and Philip Glass’s Icarus at the Edge of Time (June 27), the complete cycle of Bartók quartets presented by the Takàcs Quartet over two concerts (July 2 and 9), a sugar-sweet fully staged Candide by Bernstein (July 11, 13, and 15) and a smoking hot staging of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (August 15 and 17). Collectively the season’s concerts offered a wide-ranging and nuanced artistic experience.

The week before the Festival started, an Aspen alumna, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton (Aspen Opera Theater Center, 2008), won the prestigious Cardiff “Singerof-the-World” competition—a rigorous, high-profile event known for launching the careers of Bryn Terfel and Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Barton came to Aspen in a triumphant “victory lap” on August 9 and sang Elgar’s “Sea Pictures” to a rapt audience that was also there to see alumna-success-story Sarah Chang perform later on the program. Barton went on after the season to success in Norma at the Met and was heralded as “a revelation” by the New York Times.

Aspen’s concerts are filled with dozens of alumni returning to perform, in every age group and era of the Festival’s past sixty-four summers. One aspect of this broad-scale homecoming that greatly energizes the Aspen program is the return of recent alumni still making their transition from student to star. One such artist, pianist Conrad Tao, at age 19, opened the season with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (June 27) in his fourth time back to Aspen as a guest artist, after studying with artist-faculty member Yoheved Kaplinsky from 2004 to 2009. Tao commented in a 2013 interview that coming to Aspen each summer is “a bit like going back to a second home.” Audiences responded to his performance with an enthusiastic mix of astonishment at his prodigious artistry and warm, familial pride.

Other youthful alumni who performed include pianist Joyce Yang, who played Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini on July 7 with the Aspen Festival Orchestra and cellist Alisa Weilerstein, not yet 30, who spent every summer of her life in Aspen until she was 18 and has returned as a guest artist many of the seasons since. Recent alumni of the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen program led many successful programs, including Mei-Ann Chen on June 27, Tomás Netopil on July 26, James Gaffigan on August 2, Federico Cortese on August 7, James Feddeck on August 9, Joshua Weilerstein on August 13, and Christopher James Lees on August 14.

2013 educational initiatives In 2013, chamber music specialists David Finckel and Wu Han established an intensive chamber music program in Aspen for piano trios. For the first time spending more than a month together in Aspen, the duo selected students from their own studios, plus those of their highly regarded colleagues, to form ensembles that they mentored three or four times a week over the course of a month. The program culminated in an artistically exciting performance, presented to a packed house in Harris Concert Hall on July 10. Pulitzer-Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky joined the composition faculty in 2013 to be a part of a recalibrated composition program. Students benefitted from instruction from a wide variety of compositional voices as well as many additional readings and interaction with the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen Orchestra. A new component, a public workshop that was held on August 11, featured a panel comprising many of today’s composition luminaries: Stucky, Robert Spano, John Corigliano, John Harbison, Alan Fletcher, and George Tsontakis.

bucksbaum campus opening On July 8, the newly redesigned Matthew and Carolyn Bucksbaum Campus officially opened after more than ten years of planning and 301 days of construction. Phase One included the Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson Hall and Scanlan Hall for rehearsals, the Harry Teague Pavilion, sixty-seven practice rooms, a music library, and the Betty A. Schermer Percussion Building. During the summer, workers completed the interior of the Lower School classroom building in time for the start of the school year for CamAlan Fletcher, Kay Bucksbaum, pus partner Aspen Country Day School. It will Robert Spano, and Robert Hurst be available as teaching studios for the Festival in summer 2014. The Aspen Music Festival and School is tremendously grateful to everyone for supporting the Where Dreams Begin campaign and making the newly redeveloped Campus a reality. AMFS Trustee Kay Bucksbaum, who with her husband Matthew generously provided the lead gift for the redevelopment of the Campus, gave remarks at the July 8 ceremony and cut the ceremonial ribbon for the new facilities. Phase Two is due to open in 2016 with the largest rehearsal structure, Hurst Hall, to be built next to the current location of the Business Building. The historic Hardy Administration Building will be restored and an addition will house the administrative offices and a new cafeteria; two additional buildings constructed along Castle Creek will bring more teaching studios and an assembly hall, as well as new maintenance and bike facilities.

By the end of the 2013 fiscal year, the AMFS had raised $52,089,232 toward the $75 million dollar campaign goal. The Where Dreams Begin campaign includes goals of $35 million for the Campus reconstruction and $40 million for the expansion of the AMFS endowment.

Other campaign achievements in 2013 included: • A one-million-dollar challenge created by AMFS Trustee Ann Friedman and her husband, Tom, to complete the capital portion of the Where Dreams Begin campaign. The Friedmans have generously offered to contribute the final million dollar capital goal once the Festival reaches the $34 million mark. he creation of a planned giving society named • T to honor the legacy of Gordon and Lillian Hardy. The Gordon and Lillian Hardy Society will honor those donors who have given the AMFS the highest compliment: including the organization in their estate plans. Any planned gifts made during the duration of the Where Dreams Begin campaign will be counted towards the Campaign’s fundraising goals.

one-million-dollar matching grant from the Irving • A Harris Foundation given to support theWhere Joan and Dreams Begin Irving Harris Concert Hall’s supplementary maintenance and the annual Winter Music concert series in Aspen. We applaud Honorary Trustee Joan W. Harris for taking the lead, once again, to support this wonderful, jewel-box performance venue. The Joan and Irving Harris Concert Hall 20th Anniversary Fund will afford the AMFS the opportunity to undertake larger, supplemental projects that will improve the continued performance and comfort of the Hall, increase its energy and water efficiency, and ensure that it retains—and even gains—state-of-the-art features that will keep it a premier venue for decades to come. The gift requires a 1-1 match.

he creation of the Nancy Goeres Bassoon Fellow• T ship, established in 2013 in honor of long-time artist-faculty member Nancy Goeres. The Aspen Music Festival and School thanks the fifty-three supporters who raised more than $160,000 for this fellowship.

2013 student experience A student class of 630 talented musicians—with an average age of 22—traveled to Aspen from 29 countries, including Finland, Venezuela, the Netherlands, and Turkey, and from 41 states. Of the entire student population, 72 percent received financial aid, either in the form of a scholarship or fellowship. The total amount of financial aid given in 2013 was $2,062,170. At the end of each season, students are asked to fill out a survey that gauges their overall satisfaction with their Festival and School experience. Yet again, students provided overwhelmingly positive feedback, with 92 percent of 2013 students rating their overall experience as “excellent” or “good.” As in previous years, students also reported that the three main reasons they chose to attend the AMFS are the faculty members, the opportunity to participate in a high-level orchestra program, and the amount of financial aid offered.

Returning students comprised more than 42 percent of the 2013 class. “This was my third, and best, summer in Aspen. My experience in AACA was the closest I’ve ever had to holding a professional orchestra job,” wrote one student. “Maestro Spano was a joy to work with, and the new facilities are amazing. Bravo, AMFS. You gave me the best summer of my life this year!”

media and broadcasts The 2013 season included a visit from the New York Times, which printed a feature story that called the newly opened Bucksbaum Campus “a potent symbol of the dawning of a new era” for the Festival and School. Times classical music critic James R. Oestreich also wrote of the summer’s emphasis on Britten, noting the Festival’s “superb” and “powerful production” of Peter Grimes, and calling it a highlight of the season. America’s most popular classical radio program, Performance Today, returned to Aspen for its annual week-long residency, broadcasting hours of AMFS-centric programming to its national audience of more than 1.3 million listeners. Also visiting the Festival was NPR’s From the Top, hosted by acclaimed pianist Christopher O’Riley, which later broadcast a one-hour showcase of top young AMFS musicians to its more than 700,000 listeners. Other media coverage included Sunset Magazine naming the AMFS as one of the “top summer events of 2013,” and Musical America, among several others.

benefits Benefit evenings over the 2013 season together netted $674,888 in support of the Festival and School’s programs. The glamorous Season Benefit, held on July 29, honored Kay and Matthew Bucksbaum, whose nearly sixty-year involvement with the Festival has transformed the AMFS. In celebration of the newly opened Bucksbaum Campus, the reception and sell-out dinner took place in the beautiful new Edlis Neeson Hall and Scanlan Hall, which both overlook the revitalized Great Pond.

The 2013 season also marked the occasion of the AMFS’s 10th Annual Opera Benefit. Held on July 11, the evening included an elegant cocktail reception at the home of Benefit Chair Richard Edwards, dinner at the renowned membersonly Caribou Club, and the opening night of the Aspen Opera Theater Center’s production of Bernstein’s enchanting Candide.

The Festival and School’s special benefit events also included the Winter Benefit on February 4, featuring special guest Gil Shaham, with accompanist Akira Eguchi, as well as Artist Dinners and House Music concerts throughout the summer. The 2013 Artist Dinners featured pianist John O’Conor, the Emerson String Quartet, and bass-baritone Eric Owens, with each event including cocktails, a musical presentation, and an intimate seated dinner with the night’s featured artist. The House Music series gave AMFS supporters an opportunity to interact with some of our most talented student performers at chamber or opera performances in private homes.

One of the Festival’s greatest strengths is its deeply talented and devoted artist-faculty members. On June 30, the Festival unveiled a large-scale plaque in the Benedict Music Tent, honoring the teachers who have served the institution for twenty-five years or more. More than seventy-six names were inscribed on the plaque, with room to add names for years to come. Together the initial honorees represented a colossal 2,460 years of service to the AMFS and about half of those listed were still faculty in 2013.

GORDON HARDY
(1918-2013) A longtime administrator and key supporter of the Aspen Music Festival and School, Gordon Alfred Hardy was truly a foundational figure in the organization’s history. He came to the AMFS in 1962, serving as dean before becoming president in 1977. During his 28-year tenure, the Aspen Opera Theater Center, the Aspen Center for Advanced Quartet Studies, the Edgar Stanton Audio Recording Institute, and the Guitar Studies program, among other programs, were all launched. Gordon is remembered especially for his deep devotion to music students; the erection of the Bayer-Benedict Music Tent in 1965; the development of the first Campus, also in 1965; the creation of the Friday Aspen Chamber Symphony in 1968; and the engagement of legendary violin pedagogue Dorothy DeLay in 1971. The administration building on the Bucksbaum Campus is named in his honor.

revenue and expenses 2013 was a successful year for AMFS both artistically and financially. The institution made major leaps in fundraising, kept operating expenses under control, and finished the year with a surplus of $115,377. As in past years, the Board of Trustees has moved these funds to the organization’s endowment to be used in the future at the Board’s discretion. STUDENT ENROLLMENT
DEVELOPMENT
Student enrollment was at 629 in 2013 on a budget of 634. This is an increase from the 2012 enrollment of 613. The biggest change in 2013 was a significant increase in students requesting AMFS student housing. The Festival quickly sold out of dorm units and was able to rent thirty beds at another facility to accommodate requests. This was not unexpected since, as the rental market in Aspen modulates, there are major swings in housing requests.
In 2013, there were increased contributions from Board, National Council, and individuals by $198,336, or 5.6 percent, over 2012. The number of annual fund donors increased by 10 percent in 2013. The season benefit, in honor of Kay and Matthew Bucksbaum, was held in three new buildings on the Bucksbaum Campus. This event was very successful and in total all of our special benefits netted $674,882, which was a 114 percent increase over 2012.
TICKET SALES
INVESTMENT INCOME
In 2013, the Festival programmed a slightly higher concentration of contemporary music. Part of this programming was our celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Britten. While we did budget for a 3 percent decrease in sales, the actual decrease was approximately 8 percent. Our ticket sales for special events, however, were approximately $60,000 higher than 2012 due to the success of collaborations with the Aspen Institute and Jazz Aspen Snowmass as well multiple successful AMFS events in Harris Concert Hall.
The AMFS’s endowment policy is to draw 5 percent of a rolling average, net of fees, for operating expenses, scholarships, faculty salaries, and other designated uses. The AMFS’s invested endowment had a return of 12.2 percent for fiscal year 2013 to end at a balance of $59.6 million. In the past ten years, the AMFS’s average annual return was 7.2 percent as compared to the S&P average annual return of 7.5 percent. For both the oneand ten-year period, AMFS’s return was achieved with significantly lower standard deviation as compared to the broader S&P 500.
