Making a perfect chair is one of the classic industrial design challenges that many designers dream about. In many ways, it defines the essence of what industrial design is all about: «Bridging the gap between man and machine.»
In our case, a chair does not only have to be aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. It also has to perform according to marine regulations and fit our customer’s unique requirements. At Norsap, we have an in-house design team ready for your disposal, whether it’s a minor fix to one of our standard chairs or a completely new and exciting concept.
One of the most rewarding moments of a designer’s job is sharpening the pencils and sketching away for hours, creating a wall of ideas. Then comes months of adjustments, engineering and testing.
The second most rewarding moment is the first time you glimpse the finished product at the bridge of a ship and recognize the DNA of the Norsap design. Perhaps in the form of the distinct shoulder line, side profile, or the Y-shaped upholstery pattern.
In terms of developing a particular design language, we must consider the product’s long life span. Therefore we tend to keep the design clean and elegant to stand the test of time.

Aluminum is the third most abundant element in the earth’s crust, after oxygen and silicon. There is, in other words, more aluminium than iron in this world, and the resources will last for generations with today’s aluminium consumption.
A piece of aluminium weighs only one-third of one in steel. This makes aluminium easier to handle in a factory or on a building site and reduces energy consumption during transportation. This makes aluminium a lightweight and versatile choice of material, economically viable, and environmentally friendly.
Aluminium reacts with the oxygen in the air, forming a protective oxide coating that makes it corrosion resistant. Compared to metals like iron or steel, this means less maintenance and replacements. Reduced maintenance and less need for replacements are good news for both the environment and the overall budget of any project.
Few materials are as easily recycled as aluminium. It requires only 5 % of the energy needed to produce the initial primary metal to recycle it. In fact, 75 % of all aluminum ever produced is still in use.

Norsap 1100 series offers a modern design solution designed with comfort and ergonomics in mind. The simple and intuitive adjustment interface makes it easy to position the chair where needed or lean the backrest almost entirely flat.
Standard adjustments are the backrest, seat position on glide rails, 360˚ rotation, gas-dampened height adjustment, flip-up armrests and fold-up footrest.
The chair is mounted at a 150 mm x 200 mm oval column or a 100 mm diameter column, creating a firm base for the footrest and seat.
The Norsap 1100 chair has undergone strict MIL tests to meet the high standards set by the US military. Specifically, it has been tested to comply with the MIL-DTL-901E and MIL-STD-167/1A standards. The Norsap 1500 series are the perfect chairs for rugged environments. These chairs are designed to be lightweight and compact controller chairs, with armrests that can be fitted with numerous control options specific to each application.

Other available options are lumbar support and add-on controllers to the armrests.
The Norsap 1600 range is robust and comfortable, ideally for demanding marine environments. It is compact in size and easy to install.
The optional M-armrests offer room for internal cabling and installation of equipment and accessories, user-friendly buttons for height and backrest adjustments, conveniently located on the armrest.

The Norsap 1800 Active and Norsap 4000 Impulse chair series offer a wide range of options and configurations to ensure complete adjustability for the user. These chairs are built with a modular system, allowing optimal customer component integration. The Active chair series has a fully gas-spring actuated ergonomic system, while the Impulse chair series has an electrically actuated system with six adjustment features.
Standard adjustments are front and back tilt, forearm and upper arm adjustment, electrical height adjustment, flip-up armrests and electrical footrest. Options include 2-way manual or 4-way electrical lumbar support, speaker and microphone integrated into the backrest, seat sensors, and more.
With spacious armrests on both chair series, you can better position joysticks, displays and buttons for the best layout - Reducing unintended user interaction.

We developed the Norsap Quicksize for the Impulse series to keep it simple. This enables all six electric motors to run simultaneously and adjust arm and leg parameters based on the user’s height. This makes it a breeze to RESET and RESIZE the operator’s chair after the previous user. Norsap Quicksize may also be used for complimentary adjustments to the arms and legs, speeding up the process when taking over the chair after a shift.
While the Norsap 1600 Standard has a fixed carriage and limited adjustability, the Norsap 1800 Active and 4000 Impulse have more advanced core mechanisms that allow for a wider range of adjustments and better ergonomic support.
The user can feel this difference in functionality when sitting in the chair, even though the exterior design may look similar.
As an add-on to Norsap Quicksize, the chair may be fitted with a Norsap personal memory panel that allows up to four unique save slots for any combination of chair adjustments.
Use this for teams where one or more user is given a personal saving slot for their body size.
