Editor's note

Feeling Pink!

If you are ‘in the pink’, you are fit, healthy, and happy. Pink is also used to describe a situation in which an investor or an economy is in a good financial position.

In contrast, October has been designated as the Pink Month to increase global awareness about breast cancer and raise the funds to research the causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and its cure.

Two extremes of a continuum – one used as an informal expression for an optimal state, while the other used as a representation of a condition that has proved to be fatal to scores of women across the globe.

The common thread we see here is about nurturance, hope, and above all ‘life’.

It all makes sense till the point there is life. And ceases to have any significance thereafter.

So, no matter what’s going on in your space, if you are still breathing, know that you have a

chance to turn things around for the better.

More than just a hue

Pink is more than just a pretty color. It’s an attitude one wears. Also, the color of universal love of oneself and of others, it also symbolizes joy, romance, and new beginnings.

Aarti Sondhi, a cancer warrior carries the same attitude by virtue of which she has become an embodiment all that the color stands for.

Following suit, Corporate maverick turned artist, Ibrahim Gailani; India’s First Master of Wine, Sonal Holland; The Samaritan who goes the extra mile, Girish Pant; Energy Consultant, Pujah Srivastava; Serial Entrepreneur, David Tee –deserve to be ‘pinked’ for their accomplishments.

Read about them in this edition and you will know exactly what I mean.

On a separate yet similar note, I have come to memory

the 2019 movie, ‘The Sky is Pink’ based on the real-life story of Aisha Chaudhary (who passed on in 2015 when she was 18) and her parents battling her unusual medical disorder, pulmonary fibrosis. The movie transports one to a world where there’s love, family, fun, life, and unavoidable death.

So, let’s make a ‘pinky promise’ to ourselves that even when our skies are not a clear blue, we will be willing to paint it a color, any color for that matter, one that brings us hope, peace, and joy! ✪

Hyundai to build $5.5 Bn electric vehicle plant in the USA

South Korea’s automotive manufacturer Hyundai announced the kick-off of a $5.5 billion electric vehicle and battery plant in the United States. The plant is expected to have an annual capacity of 300,000 units. Hyundai plans to begin commercial production in the first half of 2025.

The company said that the ground-breaking project in Savannah, Georgia is part of the Group’s “commitment of $10bn by 2025 to foster future mobility in the US, including production of EVs.”

The project is set to kick off even as countries including Korea and the EU protest over USA’s electric tax policy.

In August 2022, US President Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act. According to the act, all-electric vehicles assembled in North America must qualify for tax credits in the United States. However, the act excluded Hyundai and conglomerate Kia from electric vehicle subsidies as they do not make cars in the USA. A few other major European automakers were also excluded from the act.

As per the Inflation Reduction Law, 70% of

electric vehicles are eligible for tax credits, with a charge of up to $7,500 per vehicle.

Commenting about the issue, South Korea said Mr. Biden is open to continuing talks on the USA’s recent act which denies subsidies to most foreign electric vehicle manufacturers.

The company said that the ground-breaking project in Savannah, Georgia is part of the Group’s “commitment of $10bn by 2025 to foster future mobility in the US, including production of EVs.”

Besides, Mr. Biden also praised the efforts and investments made by foreign manufacturers, to build electric vehicles and battery plants in the US. This comes just as Honda Motor and LG Energy announced that they would locate a $4.4bn battery plant in Ohio.

Mr. Biden, in his letter to South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol, promised to address Seoul’s concerns that the new U.S. rules would hurt South Korea’s automakers. As a result of the new law passed this August, only 20 electric vehicles qualify for subsidies. These include models from Ford Motor Co and BMW.

UAE’s Lulu Group to go public ahead of expansion

Abu Dhabi’s Lulu Group International is set to launch an IPO next year. The move comes as the retail giant plans to expand its operations across the Middle East. According to reports from a spokesperson, LuLu has hired investment bank Moelis to advise it on the deal.

The company’s plan to go public comes as listings in the Middle East and North Africa continue to rise, as economies recover after the pandemic.

Lulu Group’s director of marketing & communications, V. Nandakumar revealed that LuLu is set to expand aggressively, as it ventures into new markets including Iraq and North Africa.

The company is one of the largest supermarket chains in the Gulf, operating 239 stores in 11 countries and has sourcing operations in 23 countries, including the US, UK, Spain, Turkey, and China.

In 2020, Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company

announced a massive investment to expand LuLu’s operations in Egypt. ADQ was set to make an investment of up to $1 billion in Lulu International Holdings. LuLu and ADQ said, at that time that they would launch 30 hypermarkets, 100 express shops, logistics hubs, and distribution and fulfillment centers.

“Our agreement with Lulu International Holdings reflects our wider commitment to investing in Egypt, following the announcement of our joint investment platform with the Sovereign Fund of Egypt late last year,” said ADQ chief executive Mohamed Al Suwaidi.

He further added that the opening of retail shops would provide economic relief to local communities in the country, thereby improving the quality and range of products available to Egyptians.

Later on, in 2021, ADQ teamed up with the Sovereign Fund of Egypt and introduced a $20bn

platform to invest in several economic sectors, including health care, food, agriculture, mobility, and logistics.

Apart from LuLu, a whole lot of other listings were added on the UAE bourses this year. This includes Abu Dhabi Ports, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Borouge, TECOM Group, SALIK, Burjeel Holdings, ADC, Fertiglobe, ADNOC Drilling, Alpha Dhabi Holding, and Multiply.

Several other firms are also considering their initial public offerings on ADX and the Dubai Financial Market to build up flexibility against international reservations.

The MENA market reported a 500 percent rise in the number of listings in the first half of the year. According to an EY report, 24 IPOs raised $13.5bn in the first six months, while nine IPOs raised about $9bn in the second quarter of 2022. J

ROBOTS HAVE MOVED FROM FICTION AND IMAGINATION TO OUR EVERYDAY REALITY, PROMINENTLY AND COVERTLY MAKING OUR LIVES SIMPLER AND MORE ACCURATE. PALLAVI BIJU TAKES A LOOK AT THE LATEST TRENDS IN ROBOTICS AROUND THE WORLD AND HOW IT MIGHT CHANGE OUR LIVES IN THE FUTURE
Tech love 8 ASPIRE OCTOBER 2022

Robots have evolved over the past five years from an emerging technology to a vital tool for many different businesses. Additionally, during the past two years, manufacturing robot demand has surged as a result of supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and pandemic woes, as well as robotic developments like Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration, widespread IoT usage, and quick design.

Automation programs have become more widespread across a range of businesses due to their capacity to utilize data to forecast and plan for market change or supply chain interruptions. Unsurprisingly, this move towards automation will continue affecting and transforming how business is transacted as soon as next year and for many years to come.

With a new breed of protective and intelligent robots, how we function and execute tasks, in fact, how we live altogether, is undergoing a seminal transformation. The production of various types of robots for industrial, personal, domestic, commercial, and other uses is a top priority in tech-driven nations. With a CAGR (Compound annual growth rate) of 13.5%, the size of the worldwide robotics market is anticipated to reach US$189.36 billion by 2027. Moreover, industry 4.0 robotic innovations abound in the digital domain, changing the nature of labor too. Let's look at some of the latest robots that will be effectively helping in the digital world.

ROBOT CAREGIVERS

Japan has taken the lead in the use of robots as service workers because it predicts a shortfall of one million caregivers in the upcoming years. One of the modern robots that carry the potential to change caring for the elderly is the caregiver robot.

With caregiving robots, elders no longer feel alone, receive their medications on time, order necessities, and engage in a variety of activities. Despite their isolation, this has enabled the elderly to be physically, cognitively, and emotionally engaged.

Additionally, there now exist robot pets that could calm dementia patients and engage them in social engagement. Robotic dogs, cats, and miniature horses are just a few of the many such animals presently available on the market. Robots will likely become increasingly prevalent in hospitals, elder care institutions, and possibly our homes as technology advances.

9 2022 OCTOBER ASPIRE
WORLD

Forbes noted, “The tech industry has identified an enormous opportunity in care robotics: technologies designed to help the elderly in everything from assistance with daily tasks to social and emotional support.”

Forbes noted, "The tech industry has identi fied an enormous opportunity in care robotics: technologies designed to help the elderly in everything from assistance with daily tasks to social and emotional support.”

AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES

An autonomous vehicle uses a completely automated driving system to respond to external situations as a human driver would.

The concept of self-driving vehicles or autonomous vehicles is no longer alien, but the space has evolved such that cars are more advanced than ever before to prevent vehicle collisions and lessen the effects of impending collisions in addition to autonomously steering, accelerating, and braking under highway conditions. In fact, some commercial passenger cars that undertake short distances can even self-park in very constrained spaces.

Declining pricing and consumer willingness to pay have both aided in the spread of technology. According to a recent McKinsey poll, drivers would typically pay an additional $500 to $2,500 per car on various ADAS (Advanced driver-assistance systems). Despite initially only being available in luxury automobiles, several original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) now offer them in vehicles priced between $20,000 and $30,000. Undoubtedly, AVs will usher in a new era in transportation, but before autonomous driving can become a reality, the sector still has several obstacles to overcome. ADAS technologies have been shown to reduce difficulties and increase the safety of driving.

Robotics Stats

As of 2020, the medical robotics segment was worth $6 billion.

South Korea has the biggest robotics density, with 900 robots per

every 10,000 human employees.

Around 2.7 million industrial robots are working right now, globally.

Cobots or commonly called “Collaborative robots,” are expected to

Unfortunately, controlled trials and real-world events demonstrate that drivers who put too much reliance on automation end up colliding with stationary cars or other objects. Many early adopters are unaware of how restricted ADAS's existing capabilities are.

Although the debut of completely autonomous vehicles may be a few years away, businesses are already placing enormous bets on what the ideal AV archetype would seem like. It won’t be too long before we have fully autonomous vehicles, like boats and airplanes, and they become an indispensable part of our daily lives.

PEPPER

SoftBank Robotics (formerly Aldebaran Robotics) developed Pepper, a semi-humanoid robot with the capacity to perceive emotions. It was unveiled during a conference on June 5, 2014, and from June 6, it was on display in SoftBank Mobile phone stores in Japan. The technology is able to recognize several emotional states, including surprise, delight, and rage. To determine voice tone, the intelligent machine examines the lexical space. This enables it to comprehend emotional context with accuracy. In order to detect item shapes, Pepper uses a mix of 2HD and 3D cameras. To control movement, its creators incorporated up to 20 engines into the head, back, and arms.

Several offices in the UK presently employ Pepper as a receptionist. Pepper can recognize guests using facial recognition, assist meeting organizers, and make arrangements for beverages. In addition, Pepper has the ability to speak with potential customers on her own.

constitute a total of 34% of overall robot sales by the end of 2025

Sales of non-automotive robots skyrocketed in 2020, increasing by 63%.

The whole industry is worth around $40 billion.

Each year, about 400,000 new industrial robots arrive at the market.

Airports in North America, including Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal, Canada, employ Pepper to welcome visitors and provide menus and suggestions.

A group of Pepper robots cheered on the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks and the Rakuten Eagles during their baseball game on July 9, 2020, with assistance from a group of Boston Dynamics Spot quadrupedal robots.

Pepper was introduced in the UAE in 2018 and also joined the Future Center of Customer Happiness, introduced by DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority). Pepper served as a digital touchpoint at some establishments, but its responsibilities went beyond providing services. With its adaptability in doing many jobs, it successfully made people feel at ease and improved the quality of service. With the help of Softec/Yas Digital Media Plays' solutions and Orchestra Robotics' BMS unique platform, Pepper became a powerful force that is helping to create a connected, intelligent future with many possibilities for diverse interactions and integration in the future.

SAUL ROBOT

A virus-killing robot known as "Saul," created by Xenex in the year 2014, employs technology to eliminate diseases like the Ebola virus. To guarantee that the 633rd MDG is prepared to tackle infections like Ebola, the hospital personnel collaborated with Xenex. After patient and operating rooms have been cleansed, the robot, according to Genant, employs bursts of high-intensity, high-energy UV rays to tear apart bacterial cell walls and kill harmful infections frequently found in hospitals. These rays are 25,000 times brighter than fluorescent lights.

To clarify further, health-damaging bacteria, viruses, and fungi nonetheless remain in some places, despite each room being cleaned by medical employees wearing the appropriate protective gear and employing standard cleaning agents. According to Dr. Mark Stibich, the creator and chief scientific officer of Xenex, as quoted by CBS Houston, the robot can disinfect a room in five minutes and eliminate Ebola-like viruses on any surface in two minutes.

According to Genant, Saul can destroy a single strand of ribonucleic acid—like that of an Ebola-like virus— two meters out in any direction in five minutes with a 99.9 percent effectiveness rate. "Xenex has tested its full spectrum disinfection system on 22 microorganisms, studying nearly 2,000 samples in several independent labs all over the world," Gentant said.

SPEARHEADING THE INNOVATIONS

UAE has always been at the top of its game when it comes to embracing new technologies, and this continues with innovations in robotics. On September 21, 2022, The Dubai Robotics and Automation Programme was also launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, which would

aid in the advancement of robotics technology and the development of national talent.

The program, run by the Dubai Future Foundation, seeks to increase the sector's contribution to the Emirate's GDP by 9% within ten years. It focuses on five future areas of research and development, including production and manufacturing, health, logistics and transportation, tourism and customer services, and improving working conditions. It also comprises five major initiatives. Additionally, 200,000 robots will be made available through the program to increase production and efficiency in the logistical, industrial, and service sectors, as well as to improve the economy's competitiveness over the next ten years.

THE FLIP SIDE

Robotics will boost productivity and economic growth while giving many people throughout the world new work opportunities. However, there are still concerns about significant job losses, such as predictions of 20 million manufacturing job losses by 2030 or the possibility of 30% of all employment being automated by that year.

However, because of the consistent high levels of precision that robots provide, we can anticipate that they will take on more of the taxing, redundant manual labor activities, improving healthcare, transportation, and freeing up people to improve themselves. While time will ultimately determine how this all turns out, we have much to be hopeful for and prepare for the dawn of a new era. Aldous Huxley's prescient book of fiction is becoming a reality, and we can only hope the ending is Utopian, serving humanity's betterment. ✪

Customer Calls

Whether it’s buying a pair of shoes, choosing a phone, making a dinner reservation at a new restaurant or buying tickets to the latest Marvel movie –most online shoppers read online reviews before they click the ‘buy’ button. While this is not a big surprise, what’s staggering is the volume! 95% of online customers make their final decisions based on the reviews they read online.

Online buying isn’t an easy task and every customer wants to ensure that they get the most ‘bang for their buck’. They want to be sure that the product or service they are buying is tried and tested. Since they cannot see, feel or experience the product, since there is no sales assistant to guide them and answer their questions, they turn to the next best option. Customer reviews!

And while research has shown that customers start to take brands seriously, when they see an average of about 120 reviews, about 68% form an opinion after reading less than 10 reviews.

WATCH YOUR FIGURE

Customer reviews posted online makes it easier for shoppers to decide where to spend their money. With 74% of online shoppers claiming to be spending more on online shopping in 2022, online businesses have their work cut out for them. They have to ensure that they get as many customers as possible to write about their experiences and publish them online.

Customer reviews published online are as important for online businesses as they are for the traditional brick-and-mortar ones. Close to 85% shoppers trust the online reviews as much as they would trust an

opinion or recommendation of a close friend. But there are other benefits to online reviews.

THE NUMBER GAME

Consumers read at least 6 reviews before making a purchase decision – both for products and for services. And, products with more than 9 reviews generate over 50% increase in revenue. This means that allowing just a handful of positive reviews on business pages is just not enough. Although, the old adage ‘something is better than nothing’ holds true even in the case of online reviews. A product with even about 5 reviews sells about 250% more than a product with no reviews.

Online buyers need to see social proof. They need to see that your product or service has been tried and reviewed by more than just a handful of customers similar to them. So do yourself and your business a favour and get in as many reviews as you can. These reviews not only help to legitimise your business, but they also help to keep it going.

PROOF OF BUSINESS

Shoppers today are savvy! And they need proof that your business is legit. What better way for this to be proven than for your prospective customers to see social proof! Reviews – both positive and negative build your credibility. Because while they will consider the number of positive reviews your business has received, having only positive reviews comes across as suspicious. So, as much as you may hate those one-star ratings or annoyed customers showing up online, don’t delete them! Leave them as proof that your business is real.

It’s also a good opportunity for you to show off your post-sale customer handling. Sometimes, prospective customers want to see how you deal with complaints or not-so-great customer experiences. If you’re able to take the good with the bad, your customers are more assured of your products and services when making their buying decision.

13 2022 OCTOBER ASPIRE
Close to 85% shoppers trust the online reviews as much as they would trust an opinion or recommendation of a close friend

CAREFUL NOW

Customers not only read reviews, they also read the responses to them. So make sure you respond to all your reviews – even the negative ones, especially the negative ones. Don’t be like an ostrich that’s mythically known for burying its head in the sand to avoid its enemies.

When you don’t respond to a negative review, you lose out on an opportunity to explain yourself, and the circumstances surrounding the incident or even apologise! Being unresponsive even makes you come across as rude and arrogant. So, respond to all your online reviews and post updates on issues that have been resolved. In the words of Bill Gates “Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning.”

Remember, over 90% of online customers disregard negative feedback when they see that the business has responded to it. More brownie points are to be had if the issue has been resolved. Customer reviews are important for businesses at all stages. But it’s usually the newer ones, the ones looking to build their presence that need it most.

CASE WORK

As in the case of CHUNK Bakehouse, an exclusively online business based in Dubai, UAE. They started just over a year ago and their USP is their Dreamcakes and quality desserts. In our conversation with the owners, we asked about what place customer reviews held for their business growth. They responded with, “We are here to showcase our desserts and take customer reviews absolutely seriously! We are here to provide the best we can to them.” When asked about how they used their customer reviews, they told us “market research and customer feedback is vital to decide on our product line and to help us improve for the better.”

We were curious about how exactly they got their customers to review the Dreamcakes or other desserts ordered. Their response? “We call customers and ask for their feedback. We also go through all the reviews we receive on our social media channels – Instagram, Google, Facebook, Tiktok!” That’s a lot of work! But without social presence today, businesses might as well be dead in the water!

CHUNK Bakehouse is a homegrown business and

AT THE RATE OF Online shopping is definitely here to stay. And so are the habits linked to this activity viz. research before purchase. During pre-purchase research, customers are conscious of both – ratings and reviews. Such reviews and opinions on the web and e-commerce portals have been referred to as e-WOM (electronic Word of Mouth).

Star ratings play a major role in influencing a customer to loosen their purse strings. Even a consumer who is not too particular wants to see at least 3.6 out of 5 stars before deciding to purchase from a business. The more discerning shoppers won’t even consider businesses with anything less than a 4-star rating. Another major part of the pre-purchase research is reading reviews. In fact, when deciding between two products with similar ratings, a customer is more likely to buy the one with a higher number of reviews.

Both reviews and ratings are as relevant to online businesses as they are to stores. In fact, over 40% of shoppers rely on Google even when making an in-store purchase. The 100% or more year-on-year increase in “shopping near me” as a search term on Google indicates that consumers are doing more and more research before buying in-store. The reasons for this are varied. Some customers are looking for indications of whether their garment or shoes of choice are available at a store near them before actually going in to purchase it. Others are looking at what the best times to visit are – hoping for a better in-store browsing and over all shopping experience. Yet other shoppers want to find out what policies the store has on refunds and returns.

While the business may have all this information on their website and other social media channels, customers no longer take this at face value. They therefore check out the reviews online to ensure that the information published by the business matches actual customer experiences. Through customer reviews and feedback, shoppers are quick to gauge

between what’s real and what’s smoke and mirrors.

THE FLIP SIDE

Which brings us to a very real problem – fake reviews! Yes, they exist and yes, they are a very real problem for businesses. According to a study by Brightlocal, 81% of consumers believe they have read at least one fake review. And these fake reviews can be both positive and negative! And both can be equally harmful to the business. Which is why we cannot stress the importance of responding to those reviews. A genuine and confident response to a negative review allows an impartial viewer to consider both sides of the situation.

There are other ways to verify these, such as Fakespot – a Google Chrome extension. ‘Since most reviews are written and reviewed via Google’ they can be spotted through this extension.

Make your money make money

With economies seeing massive fluctuations globally, the need to invest wisely becomes increasingly important. A few tips from an expert…

Investing is the most reliable way to attain your financial goals. It’s the gateway to financial discipline and independence. As a general rule, most people set aside a portion of their income as savings each month. But little do they know that, unfortunately, the saved money is unlikely to parallel inflation curves or increase in value. However, when you invest, you are putting your money to work, even when you’re not working. This is why successful businesses or people often make successful investments, aside from their inflow of profit or income.

Bluntly stated, the risk is a part of the investing game. A wrong investment choice could cost you a fortune and leave your investment underwater, which no one really wants. But when you examine the dynamics of the economy, educate yourself on market trends, and make strategic decisions based on this learning, you’re bringing ballast to the game. To avoid pitfalls, identify your financial goals, interests, and risk tolerance level to create a strategy that scrutinizes the market thoroughly. Make good use of the indicators that provide insights into the market and give you an idea of what works and what doesn’t. Remember, a good investment is the one that fits your goals and grows in value.

Be very aware that the risk of not investing outranks the risk associated with investing. You may believe you are in a secure zone when you amass

Opinion

your savings in a savings account, expecting that a few years down the line, you’ll have saved a huge sum of money to cater for future plans. But the truth is quite different.

Every single year you retain your money stagnantly, you’re robbing the opportunity for your money to grow. Inflation is creeping up steadily each year by 2% -3%, relatively higher than the earnings you may get from your bank. Though it doesn’t seem much, it can account for a considerable loss in the long run. And, sooner than you realize, your money will lose its purchasing power and eventually its value. While on the other hand, your money is worth more tomorrow if it grows more than the inflation rate. Hence, small and dedicated investments with a strategized plan can compound into substantial wealth.

Make it work

Investing is an effective way to put your money to work and potentially build wealth. Smart investing may allow your money to outpace inflation and increase in value. The greater growth potential of investing is primarily due to the power of compounding and the risk-return tradeoff.

Running a profitable investment allows you to save for yourself. Plus, you can make your savings accessible to future generations. There’s also no minimum withdrawal limit. And that is a win in itself.

Being an investor allows you to follow up on your business for as long as you want, even when you are eighty years old.

Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory. Think big, act small, but start NOW. Don’t wait for opportunities; create them.

On a Final Note

One investment strategy does not fit all and may vary from those of your family and friends. Therefore, before you choose this path, do your homework, consider your goals and financial situation, and learn how to invest - as well as about the risks involved! You don’t need lump sum money to start your investing journey. Start small by setting aside a little money each month. If you’re a fresher in the investment arena, then you’re more likely confused about where to put your money. Get in touch with a reputable financial planner or an advisor to guide you.

Nevertheless, be ready to expect the unexpected in the coming decade. ✪

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” is a famous proverbial phrase that encourages one to make the best of one’s negative situation. Some give into the situation and stumble. While a few rise above and emerge stronger than before. Aarti Sondhi, not just made lemonade, but served many a glassful to people all around the world. She bravely faced cancer head-on when it showed up not once, not twice, but four times! Her decision to opt for early detection and prompt treatment was just one of her determined steps on her remarkable journey.

October is a month earmarked to raise global awareness about breast cancer, promote screening, and encourage prevention with early detection. It encourages one to pay attention to one’s symptoms and seek medical attention without delay.

LIFE BEFORE CANCER

A very active child from her early days on, Aarti was a vibrant girl. She grew up in the heart of Punjab, in a loving family of four. As an Indian Airforce brat, she studied in different schools and traveled across the length and breadth of India, also living in a hostel in Himachal at one point. The experience of moving constantly taught her to acclimatize to change early in life and deal with whatever life threw at her with equanimity. “Life for the families of military personnel is different than that of the ones in civil. But I was lucky enough to have experienced both. I grew up learning values, and at the same time had lots of fun,” recalls Aarti. Being academically inclined, she graduated with an MBA in Marketing in 2000 and later that year, married the love of her life, Amit Vij. Five years after marriage, the couple decided to move to Dubai in 2005 to build a new life in the city of skyscrapers and dreams.

WEARLY DETECTION

It was the year 2020, and her fitness journey with FITTR and INFS had just begun. A few weeks before completing her professional fitness certification (May 2021) to become a FITTR coach, and at the age of 42, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. “The wife of my husband’s brother was diagnosed with breast cancer in New Zealand in July 2020. Though I had nothing to worry about, but it led me to become more conscious. One day, lying on my bed, I felt this lump in my breast. Since someone close to me had recently been diagnosed with cancer, I knew that this was not something to be ignored or taken lightly. Not knowing which hospital to visit or anything about which specialist to see as I’d hardly been to any hospitals in my life, I ended up visiting the one where my son was born and was redirected to a breast surgeon there. The doctor I met on that first appointment hand held me through everything

and did not leave my side,” says Aarti gratefully. After her ultrasound and biopsy returned positive Aarti was told she had cancer. “I was shocked when got the news. As a matter of fact, I’d never been overweight and neither smoked nor drank. I had no habits that could potentially cause cancer,” she stated. However, despite the shock, she had good news to cling to. As per her doctor, her tissues were still healthy and it was likely she would be clear of the ailment in 6 months.

With early detection and diagnosis, the chance of beating breast cancer is greater than 90%, according to WeillCornell. org. Begin your mammogram at the age of 40, or sooner if you have a family history of the disease.

Breast cancer signs you must be aware of are:

● A new lump in your breast or underarm

● Bloody nipple discharge

● Changes in the skin or appearance of your breast, such as redness, or inflammation.

If you notice any of these signs develop, seek medical attention promptly. “These signs can have benign harmless causes, but they need to be checked out,” Dr. Newman says. “Early detection is the most effective way of surviving breast cancer.”

PANDEMIC PROGNOSIS

The pandemic posed a hurdle for her parents in coming to the UAE, from India to be with her during this difficult time. Travel was closed as Covid-19 was at its peak. “The pandemic was in its initial stages, and doctors had no clue how Covid-19 would react to cancer. Because of this, my family and I were asked to quarantine - which was my biggest challenge.” Aarti drew strength from her meditative practices and found hope and courage to press forward through prayer. “I’ve been a practicing Buddhist since 2003, and my husband since 1993. I chanted for five hours a day initially. Now it’s for about two hours a day and and my husband joins me.”

Her husband Amit is her major source of support. “Aarti has fought this battle like a sun dispelling clouds of fear and anxiety within the family and among our circle of friends. Through her struggle she has shown that the human spirit is invincible and indestructible and happiness is not merely a concept” he says, his pride in his wife evident in his voice as well as his words.

TRIAL BY FIRE

Aarti underwent multiple tests to see the extent of the disease. While she was at her PET scan to rule out the possibility of cancer spreading to other parts of her body, the doctors detected cancer in her liver. It had moved from Stage Two to Stage Four as the cancer had metastasized. This meant that the cancer cells had spread to a different part of the body from where they had first mutated. The discovery meant a change

in the initial treatment plan for Aarti. Now it was more about saving the rest of her organs to control the spread and reduce the tumor. “The first surgery was in September to remove my ovaries as it was hormone-related. In June, I had liver ablation – a treatment that destroys liver tumors without removing them.”

Before her mastectomy – the surgical removal of all breast tissue from a breast, she underwent a PET scan where it was detected that a new tumor had formed in the bone, as she was given the clear for malignancies in the breast and liver. It didn't end there. In January 2022, during another PET scan, the doctors detected yet another tumor in her right axillary lymph node, which hadn’t been there earlier. It was also discovered that the profile of the tumor had changed and she was scheduled for chemotherapy.

“Aarti is the kind of patient who inspires her doctors. Her

journey has been far from typical, at each step there were difficult decisions to be made, and yet, at every one of those stages, she was willing to go the extra mile and fight for hard-won victories. The Aarti we see today is truly an icon of human fortitude, surviving and conquering her trial by fire” says breast surgeon Dr. Maharra Hussain, Mediclinic Welcare Hospital, Dubai.

INSPIRING OTHER

Though extremely stressed as the tumor kept surfacing in different areas of her body, Aarti chose to remain positive. Chemotherapy is one of the most dreaded aspects of cancer treatment, but she approached it with fortitude in order to encourage others and lead by example. She started recording her journey and took to social media to share her experiences and told the world about her battle with cancer and her five surgeries in two years.

It was not Aarti's goal to be merely free of cancer… she wanted her journey to help others who were struggling and made it her mission to spread awareness and hope that cancer was a beatable foe. Though she herself went through personal battles emotions emotionally, physically, and mentally she did not fail, not even once, to send out a continued message of courage and cheer. Even today she can be seen celebrating life and inspiring many others via her social channels.

Aarti noticed that many patients were unwilling to photograph themselves as they lost their hair during chemotherapy, and was determined to change the way people viewed this hair loss. Her purpose was clear. “I want to dispel the stigma associated with cancer and fight the life-threatening disease with a positive spirit.”

Of course, Aarti started losing her hair as a result of chemotherapy. But before she lost it all, she handed the scissors to her family and made them cut them for her. “I didn’t want my kids to see me without hair and feel troubled by it. So, I drove them to be part of it.”

CONQUERING HEARTS

Aarti went on to participate in the Mrs. Universe Middle East beauty pageant held in Dubai, while she was still going through chemotherapy and saw it as an opportunity to show the world that one can be bald and still be beautiful. While everyone represented their country, she represented cancer warriors everywhere. Not only did she participate, she also won the crown as the first runner-up. Walking the ramp, sans wig of any sort, she sent out a powerful message: beauty comes with no definition and it begins from inside. Aarti was and is no ordinary woman. She did not wait until her chemotherapy ended or for the cancer to go away before

The UAE has claimed its spot as one of the world’s leading healthcare hubs with its debut in the World’s Best Hospitals 2022 Index. Its rapid infrastructure, growing focus on preventive care, strong regulatory framework to protect patients, and focus on quality healthcare across public and private medical institutions have helped UAE emerge as one of the top nations with the world’s advanced healthcare ecosystems. UAE is also the first country in the world to have more than 200 accredited health facilities, according to Joint Commission International (JCI). she started living… to start volunteering and motivating others. Majlis Al Amal –Al Jalila Foundation in Dubai is where she would spend time interacting with other cancer survivors - listening to their stories and sharing hers with them. Luck favored when it came to medical finances as her treatment was covered by the insurance, but she wouldn’t be satisfied with that. She hit the roads on a cycling drive with her son to collect funds for the foundation, which then would directly go to the cancer patients who can’t afford treatment.

TO LIVE A LIFE, MEANS TO LIVE WELL

“For me, the mental strength was through prayers. As for my physical strength, I trusted my doctors from day one, though I did take a second opinion on my treatments with another doctor. I had many people recommend many alternatives, but I never gave heed.” Rather than giving up, Aarti went on to complete her fitness course and become a certified fitness and nutrition consultant so that she could help other cancer survivors. Her fitness lifestyle had a positive outcome. Because she was strong physically and mentally, she had fewer side effects from the chemotherapy, and firmly believes that, “It’s all in the mind. It is not easy, but go through it with strength, give your best, and be positive.”

Aarti believes everything in life happens for a reason. For her, it was cancer. Though stressed mentally and physically, she was determined to push herself beyond her limits. “Cancer has given me the opportunity to show the world that cancer does not equal depression and hating oneself,

or life. Our body manifests what our mind believes. Hence, it’s very important to keep our mind healthy equally to our body.” She also advises other cancer survivors to not be hesitant in asking for help. “Learn to approach for help. Be it small or big” she adds.

Through Aarti’s journey, one can learn that cancer is only a chapter and not the whole story. And the journey is not about the end result, but rather about dwelling positive throughout the journey. It also draws attention to awareness and calls for early detection to win the battle in the fight for survival. It’s all about learning to make lemonade when life serves you some lemons. ✪

The Colour Of Life

A believer in the power of manifestation, Ibrahim Gailani rekindled his love and passion for art after pursuing a corporate career. Here he talks to Najmus Sahar about his journey, his purpose, and his art

You know, if you just believe and manifest a vision, that this is where I see myself, and it will happen. The problem is people don’t believe in themselves because society tells us not to.” A rebel by nature and a self-taught contemporary artist, Ibrahim Gailani challenged his status quo and embarked on a journey of soul-searching and self-discovery to find his true calling. His uniqueness lies in his pop-inspired art with graffiti lettering and his story is nothing short of inspirational.

Early Years

Ibrahim spent his entire childhood and most of his formative years in the UAE. He moved to UAE at the tender age of five, and by age six, even before he could comprehend sentences, read and write, he was able to sketch effortlessly. This was a skill and something that came naturally to him. UAE, a melting pot of cultures and home to some of the richest and most wholesome cultures, beautifully coming together as a piece of art; allowed Ibrahim to express the artist within him.

Despite having the burning desire to express his creativity and love for art, Gailani ‘s passion met with discouragement from his parents, and he could only pursue art while in high school.

Giving in to family and societal pressures, he went on to do his Bachelor’s in Business Administration from American University in Pakistan, with a major in Marketing. He went on to work for call centers in Pakistan and after that came to Dubai to work in various capacities in the corporate world.

Initially Gailani found himself torn between the worlds of creative magic and corporate conformism and he ultimately gave up on art from resentment and anger. Little did he or anyone else know the great heights that he was destined to reach and conquer.

An encounter with a relative changed everything. “Everybody will tell you not to do this, but you have it in you. One day, you’ll become a great artist,” said one of his father’s cousins when she looked at his work.

Her name was Suhaila, and she was a renowned name in the art industry at that time. She gave him a 500-rupee note back in the 80’s as an incentive – a note that he still cherishes to date. Unfortunately, he never met her again, but her words reverberate in his ears to this day.

The Deliverance

Life took an unexpected turn when Gailani got the chance to work for one of the biggest telecommunication companies in Pakistan – Telenor’. As destiny took him to Lahore – a city of rich cultures and mesmerizing art and artistry, Ibrahim was once again drawn to his long-lost love – art in its purest form. Lahore is the cultural heart of Pakistan, and Gailani felt that spark within him reignite as he relished in the beauty of Lahore’s art landscape.

While working there, he got immersed in the ex -

purpose in life lay in his passion and love for art. She handed him a canvas and encouraged him to pour his heart out onto it.

He hadn’t picked up his paintbrushes in almost two decades and there was a void inside him that made him feel hollow and incomplete. He was in his 30s, at this time, and as blank as the canvas in front of him. And in that moment, he started painting his face. The strokes of his paintbrush just brought out the years of bottled-up feelings and emotions he had been carrying within him. His entire journey of battling with his inner voice, living a life of pretense, and pursuing all those things that he had never envisioned for himself came out on the canvas.

“I made the first painting, and it was called ‘Deliverance’, and it was just about me letting go of all baggage. That painting, I did it in literally 45 minutes, and for the longest time, it has been framed in my house.”

The painting is a constant reminder of the moment when Gailani broke free from the clutches of society and his corporate career to finally listen to his heart and pursue his dreams. The feeling of

liberation and empowerment have guided his calling since that moment.

The Calling “Something that you really wish for happens,” says the artist.

He has been painting for nearly 13-14 years now, and for 8-10 of those years in a professional capacity. The story of kickstarting his career in arts can be traced back to his visit to the vibrant city of Berlin. There was something about that place that resonated with his soul. It touched him in the most profound of ways. At the Berlin Wall, he broke down and cried, contemplating life and how he had been living a life to please only others at the cost of his soul.

“At one point, I was the best son, then I became the best Muslim; I had the phase of going to the mosque five times to please my mom. They wanted me to get married, have kids, and have a certain job – I did it all.”

Life has its own ways of connecting you with the things you love. While in Lahore, he was manifesting his desire to be featured in New York, but a temporary gig landed him in Oman. Gailani knew that his art “was a little too loud and unconventional.” And everything inside him said that he’d be rejected. The

art scene hadn’t evolved to embrace his vision, he felt, and people were still painting traditional deserts, camels, and mosques – souvenir art of the region.

Gailani dared to flirt with the most taboo and nontalked-about topics of that time. He experimented with bold statements touching on sexuality, addictions, and controversial topics that were normally brushed under the carpet. The themes of his paintings revolved around all the hard lessons that life taught him. How one gets to face the struggles and blows to reach a state of higher consciousness. The intensity of his paintings was correspondingly surreal and invoked a singularly emotional response from audiences.

It wasn’t long enough before Gailani’s work gained momentum and piqued the interest of international curators. This was unsurprising as he rode the wave, an early adopter of Instagram, showcasing his work in the most creative, aesthetically appealing manner. All that he had dreamt of was finally coming true in the form of international recognition, awards, press coverage, and fame.

Art’s Own Language

Inspired by Sufism—a mystical form of Islam, Gailani’s art is an amalgam of pop art combined with graffiti lettering. His paintings are featured in the Middle East, Europe, and North America. The portraits he brings to life through his provocative and bold colors personify the different layers that humans carry. Inspiration is all around, but one of his most important muse’s has been Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, as her facial expression captured a gamut of emotions. Like Kahlo, Gailani’s internal struggles are poignantly on display in his artistic outpouring.

“Who are you? What’s your identity? That was the core of discovering who you are. And so my art tries to uncover the layers. And that’s why there are so many layers.” The Gailani Art Retreat in Oman has been one of the biggest milestones in his life, serving as a way to give back to the art world and empower art enthusiasts to live their dream.

UAE and Art

Returning to Dubai brought Gailani full circle. Having spent his childhood here and coming back to this country was truly a moment of completion. The UAE welcomed him back with open arms and acknowledged his talent. Quite recently a leading International Hotel chain in Dubai has commissioned him to paint a pop-art portrait mural 5 ft. high - something he is really excited about. He also plans to do a ‘Faces of Dubai’ series where he paints all top influencers with background graffiti as part of his upcoming project.

Gailani’s vision is to be part of an art school or open one, as there is a dearth of traditional art colleges and artist grants, and homegrown artists need a platform in the UAE. He enlightens us about ‘creative

hubs’ that aspiring, budding artists can rent out and use as creative spaces to practice their art.

He believes that with online art and the NFT space taking over the landscape, Dubai has been one of the pioneers in laying the groundwork for it. He’s currently working on his NFT collection and is very excited to launch it. “I like the idea of one of one. People buy art when it’s unique.”

We can all expect art on canvas as well as art in living from this talented man. He lives by the wise words of Rumi and even has it tattooed on himself, so he never forgets. “Yesterday, I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

Certainly, he paints and lives the color of life by staying true to himself and his passion and in doing so teaches us to live our best lives too. ✪

Intelligence, Hard Work and Fate

Sonal recalls that, in school, despite being a mischief she still managed to score top grades. She finished her diploma in Hotel Management from Dadar Catering College while simultaneously pursuing a BA in Arts, and after graduation started working for the food and beverage division of Taj. She then pursued an MBA in marketing and took up a sales and marketing position with the Oberoi chain of hotels for two years. This was where she met her future husband, Andrew Holland, an expatriate from the UK, on assignment in Mumbai. When they started dating she took a hiatus to travel with him to different Asian destinations which exposed Sonal to the international culture of hospitality and wine.

Unknowing that one day she would pursue a career in wine, she joined Kelly Services, a NASDAQ and fortune 500 company focused on recruitments and staffing. To achieve that, she finished her diploma from WSET - Wine and Spirit Education Trust and continued to level up.

Her excitement about the future of the Wine industry in India is palpable. She says “It’s all about how hard you work and how quickly you are willing to act upon your ideas. Ideas come to everyone. The difference is the execution. Some people seize the opportunity and come upon something great, something exciting while others miss their chance.”

Setting the Stage to Start a Legacy

When Sonal set foot in the wine scene of India, she realized that the primary need was for good wine education. Stepping into the gap, she launched the Sonal Holland Wine Academy in 2009, collaborating with WSET to provide world class wine education courses for people in hospitality, food and beverages, tasters, professionals, budding enthusiasts, and wine retailers.

From 2013 to 2016 Sonal headed the ITC group of Hotel’s corporate beverage program. On receiving her Master of Wine title in 2016, she started a consultancy for international wine brands to establish business and brand presence in India. Then in 2019, she established Vine2Wine retail boutiques in Mumbai and Bangaluru. With a curated selection of International and domestic brands, it is a new and innovative liquor retail experience with sophisticated vibes to provide a wine tasting experience and not merely a storefront to order some liquor.

Sonal is the force behind India Wine Awards - A wine tasting competition to rank the best wines amongst more than five hundred national and overseas entries. Since its conception in 2017, the competition has scaled up and has tied up with Prowine - the largest wine and alcoholic beverage trade show in the world for the next five years. This year’s winners were unveiled at the Prowine show in Mumbai on 17th October.

Taking the Work out of Work

Looking back, Sonal feels that her spectacular journey has translated really well into her work and helped her face every challenge with enthusiasm and positive energy. She sticks by the old adage - “When you find something to be passionate about, you will never

work a day in your life.”

Her plans for the future include expanding the reach of Sonal Holland Academy. The Food and Beverage and hospitality industry in India is booming, and there is a great demand for quality wine experts everywhere. She envisions a symbiosis where her academy provides the best wine education available for minimal charges to people all across the world. There has been an increase in students signing up for the online courses from the UAE, Maldives, Sri lanka, Mauritius etc. As an educator, Sonal pours her vast Master of Wine knowledge, her international sensibilities, and priceless experience into designing these courses that apart from being affordable, are extremely industry applicable and global.

Excited about India’s prospects as a developing wine market, her efforts to help brands launch themselves in India has garnered a lot of interest. To achieve scalability, Sonal and her team have created India Wine Insider – a 100-page knowledge dense white paper, providing in depth information about navigating the Indian market, understanding the laws and import regulations in order to establish their presence in India.

Sonal is also appointed Ambassador for South Australian wines in India and collaborates with international bodies like the California Wine Institute to bring awareness to international brands. Involved with curating wine experiences for corporate events in India, she also gets invited all over the world to introduce the Indian wine culture, its growth and opportunities. Her remarkable achievements have won her numerous accolades and felicitations. Full of humility she says, “I didn’t set out to do this thing with the aim of earning fame and recognition. I took one step on a pathway and then another step and soon it became my roadmap. Getting recognized for my efforts makes me feel extremely grateful.” ✪

The ESGalating Need

Today, consumers use their purchasing power to reward companies that take responsible business practices seriously. They demand transparency and accountability in how companies operate, invest, and produce goods.

In response to these changing market dynamics, the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) movement has grown significantly over the last few years. More and more businesses recognize that integrating social responsibility into their operating principles can lead to a multitude of benefits — from reduced risk and distrust among customers to increased brand loyalty, customer retention, and even positive media coverage.

Let’s dive in and understand more.

What is it?

ESG refers to the three main areas of sustainability: Environmental, Social, and Governance.

Breaking down the concept – Environment deals with considerations connected with energy use, toxic emissions, waste disposal, and natural resource conservation. The Social aspects entail the supply chain elements of a company, community contributions, working conditions at the workplace, and so on. Finally, the elements of Governance include transparency, decision-making, representation of environmental and social stakeholders, etc.

Together, they focus on the company’s long-term value, including its relationships with employees, customers, and the wider community. Financial sustainability is also part of ESG.

The primary drivers - The millennial generation has grown up with a focus on sustainability issues, and

they make up a large part of the consumer market. This has led to an increase in demand for (and supply of) environmentally friendly and ethically produced products. There has been increased media coverage on sustainability issues, which has led to improved public awareness. Consumers have become more empowered due to the growth of social media, which has led to a greater demand for transparency and accountability from companies. Investors and executives have also realized that a strong ESG proposition can pave the way for a company’s long-term success. The war in Ukraine and its ramifications across the geopolitical, economic, and social spheres have heightened the talk around ESG, capturing the world’s attention.

“If you don’t address the corporate culture, and endeavor to put social and environmental purpose at the heart of that culture, paradoxically, you won’t actually get the effects you want, including the financial ones.” - Hugh Wilson, Corporate Sustainability and Social Impact Expert, Warwick Business School (WBS).

Together, they focus on the company’s long-term value, including its relationships with employees, customers, and the wider community

The gains

It’s more than a goodwill-generating, feel-good fad. ESG betters the cause of businesses in the following ways: Improved Brand Reputation - The ESG initiatives of companies improve their brand reputation and increase customer loyalty, leading to long-lasting relationships with clients, and eventually to profitability. The more transparent and accountable companies are, the more likely they are to attract reputable investors.

Value-edged – Research points out that companies that work effectively with ESG realize higher equity returns due to customer impressions and reduced risk. This is enabled by lower loan and credit default swap spreads and the privilege of higher credit ratings enjoyed by these organizations. Even measures such as greener packaging, usage of renewable energy, digital receipts, and effective waste management help save costs and reduce cabin footprint. Scope for expansion – Governments provide a helping hand to companies with sustainable objectives through special licenses and permissions, which helps them expand their operations.

The investor angle

A growing number of investors incorporate ESG issues into their investment strategy. This can be attributed to:

that ESG issues do not guarantee greater profitability. No Protection from Financial Risk — Companies with a positive impact on their communities and the environment also experience financial issues and market fluctuations. This can lead to a reduction in profit for investors. In such cases, no federal protection is in place for an investment strategy based solely on the ESG of a company. Many of the ESG factors aren’t quantifiable either which means that investors who rely on ESG issues alone tend to lose money if a company experiences a financial crunch.

Read the disclosures carefully — Investors must carefully analyze if companies practice what they preach. Many corporate sustainability disclosures talk about processes and procedures but fail to execute them. It is also pertinent to understand if the data disclosed by companies are accurate and highlight the true nature of their adherence to the ESG cause.

A three-point strategy

While there are no concrete blueprints that can have a robust ESG strategy in place, the following measures have been commonly used to great success: The first step — Identify the sustainability issues that are most important to your company, something that gels well with your value system and business objectives. Prioritize these issues, dealing with the most important first.

A common desire to maximize the return on their investments by avoiding other investments harmful to the environment or society.

Create a Sustainable Business Model — Create a framework to help you reach that objective. You can begin by looking at your most significant inputs and outputs and identifying areas where you can make improvements.

Access to a broader pool of investment opportunities as a growing number of companies are committed to implementing best practices in the areas of ESG. This can lead to a reduction in risk for investors and a better chance of profit.

○ The opportunity to earn a more attractive rate of return as companies that have a positive impact on their communities and the environment often pay higher wages than other companies in the same industry.

Effectively Communicate the Business Model — You should communicate the business model to your employees and other stakeholders. This will help them understand and support the model and its sustainability initiatives.

Here to stay

ESG is a growing phenomenon, as evidenced by the major measures of many global bodies.

Eligibility for tax breaks. This can help investors save money for retirement or other financial goals.

A few limitations

All this said, every coin has two sides. Investors need to understand that some of these limitations may not necessarily weaken the scope of their project in its entirety.

Nothing is guaranteed — Shareholders may use their power and influence to push for changes in a company. While this can benefit investors, it is essential to note

The concept was also an important agenda of the World Economic Forum’s 2021, Davos summit. Soon after, many countries began announcing their pledges to achieve ‘Net Zero Carbon Emissions’ by 2050. This suggests that we are not talking about a term that is a new entrant into the big, wide corporate culture. Companies like Apple and Microsoft have committed to carbon-negative objectives. Asset-heavy sectors are tilting towards higher usage of renewable energy to reduce their carbon footprint. This has paved the groundwork for future-ready, value-driven enterprises, a future that now looks beyond the bottom line and towards a better world for all. ✪

IN THE PINK

It’s that time of the year! Every October, people from across the globe come together to show their support to those affected by breast cancer. A subject that requires discourse, according to the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer makes up 25 percent of all new cancer diagnoses in women globally, October has been given the moniker, Pinktober, and true to its name, the world is about to get a whole lot pink this time of the month.

As various brands roll out initiatives to create awareness and show their support, we throw a spotlight on ‘The Pink Caravan’, an initiative that urges UAE residents to be aware of Breast Cancer signs.

Read on as we trace the genesis behind the initiative, how you can contribute, and benefit from it.

What Is The Pink Caravan?

The Pink Caravan is a UAE-based initiative launched by Friends of Cancer Patients. FOCP is a non-profit organization founded in 1999 under the directives and patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, Founder and Patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients, International Ambassador of the World Cancer Declaration for Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), International Ambassador for Childhood Cancer for UICC and Patron of the Global NCD Alliance Forum.

The initiative calls out public and private sector organizations to unite to spread awareness and encourage early detection of breast cancer ahead of international Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the World Health Organization, Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer as of 2021, accounting for 12 percent of annual cases worldwide. For over ten years now, Pink Caravan has worked on targeted efforts in raising awareness, offering free screening, and getting government and businesses to sponsor activities to promote breast health in the UAE.

In 2021, Pink Caravan delivered over 2,197 clinical breast examinations, 1,019 mammograms, and 208 ultrasound tests.

How Does It Work?

The Pink Caravan launched a state-ofthe-art Mobile Medical Clinic in 2018 to propel the campaign’s efforts within the UAE and offer free checkups to the women in the region. The independent medical facility licensed by the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) is available to individuals throughout the year and can screen 40 individuals a day.

Since the beginning of this year, the Pink Caravan Medical Mobile Clinic has traveled across the UAE spreading breast

Al Majaz Waterfront. It brings services to the doorstep including mammograms, breast examination, ultrasound, and pap tests.

Lend A Helping Hand

There are many ways in which you can get involved with Pink Caravan’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month activations.

Pink Caravan conducts regular public and private events ahead of International Breast Cancer month. In addition, you can sign up for their Corporate Wellness Day initiative that gives you access to a 30-minute lecture, clinical examinations, and mammogram vouchers. However, this requires prior booking as the slots tend to fill in fast.

Their state-of-the-art Medical Mobile Clinic can also be booked or sponsored to provide free breast and cervical cancer screenings to members of the community. More information can be found in the Pink Caravan Awareness Day Booking Form.

While breast cancer is a well-known topic, very few women come forward or take the time to get tested. Invariably, we tend to sideline it due to sheer

Besides, Lapita’s Lobby Lounge, Palama will serve a host of pink mocktails and pastries throughout October. A percentage of these profits will be donated to the Al Jalila Foundation.

And, that’s not all! Fitness freaks now have a chance to do their bit in support of Breast Cancer. Abu Dhabi’s Yas indoor mall has launched a ‘Pink Run’ to support breast cancer. Runners will come together on 1st October to participate in the Indoor Pink Run, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of regular checkups and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Participants can pick from various distances, including 2.5 kilometers, five kilometers, and 10 kilometers, so they can go head-to-head with their friends and family.

Everyone participating in the Yas Mall Indoor Pink Run will receive a bespoke Breast Cancer Awareness medal, access to the event’s photo album with free downloads, and even a finisher’s certificate. Besides, AED 10 per paid entry will be donated to Brest Friends Foundation, UAE’s first breast cancer support group, in partnership with Al Jalila Foundation.

It is heart-warming to see such initiatives which look beyond success and profit and work towards a cause. No better time to have this conversation! ✪

The healing power of space-holistic interiors

The signature programme ‘Geo 7 Space’ creates coherent solutions for sustainability. The treatment relies on the common principle - What can be measured, can be managed.

This unique methodology measures energies to create consecrated spaces providing synchronicity between mind, body, soul, and space. To bring the right energy shift in life is the motto of ‘Geo 7 Space’.

This series brings together Dr. S Pujah’s knowledge and experience gained over the years and the first one focuses on the Healing Power of Spaces and Holistic Interior Design for an enriched life.

Power packed Planning or designing the spaces alone is not enough as the energies have to be in sync with the energies of the dwellers. Holistic interior design is an approach that supports both the physiological and psychological well-being of the inhabitants. Its vision for body, mind, and spirit is integral for creating interiors that breathe. Below are some of its attributes: Body—When holistically designed, the space empowers individuals with physical limitations and creates ease in the body.

Mind— needs a stress-free and organized space to be productive. A cluttered space is distractive and can limit productivity.

Spirit—requires a space that serves as a loving cocoon to revive the spirit. These spaces are welcoming and energizes people to help them relax and enjoy.

Holistically designed interiors follow Biophilic Design, i.e. bringing living elements such as daylight, greenery, water, natural materials, patterns, textures, and colors into the living or working space. By doing so one can: ¡ Improve attention span, concentration, and memory restoration ¡

Increase wellbeing by 15%, productivity by 6%, and creativity by 15% ¡ Lower heart rate and blood pressure

¡ Reduce stress and anxiety

Increase comfort, and positive thoughts

Reset Circadian Rhythms for enhanced

The Three Aspects

1. Physical ambience

Holistic interior design aims at assembling a great physical environment at home for families, or workplaces for employees and customers. While exploring every aspect of the space to enhance its functional flow, it’s essential to be mindful of the spaces the occupants might find themselves in and how they might ‘feel’ physically at that moment. As a result, the space becomes fully aligned to the individual’s daily operation with improved productivity and ease of living.

2.

Emotional engagement

This aspect influences mood and the ability to make decisions and makes use of colour psychology and neuroscience. For instance, some individuals are aware of their feelings, but they cannot really relate them to the environment they’re in. Thus, it is important to glorify the aesthetics of the space by assessing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the environment to create a space that reflects an individual’s personality and enables them to connect with it on a deeper level.

3. Visual essence

The design, texture, colors, and decorations speak volumes and the aura that fills the home narrates a lot about an individual. Most people keep going back to the same restaurant for the ambience - simply because the charismatic elements are pleasing and make them delighted. Therefore, the visual aspect shouldn’t be overlooked.

The Five Elements and Senses

A holistic home is appealing to our five senses and balances the following

five elements:

1. Water — the sense of taste. With an abundance of healing energy, it attracts new opportunities, brings clarity to thoughts and ideas, provides immunity, and restores health. An imbalance in this element can result in issues related to the kidney and liver.

2. Air — the sense of touch. Linked with movement (especially rational movement), it represents growth in life and calls for refreshment, fun, and happiness. An imbalance in this element can lead to illnesses such as cold, cough, asthma, jaundice, and issues in the eyes.

3. Fire — the sense of sight. Adds confidence and enthusiasm to one’s life and brings “warmth” to relationships. It also governs the flow of income. Any imbalance in this element can lead to skin allergies, weight issues, high blood pressure, and anemia.

4. Earth — the sense of smell. Dominates the center and diagonal directions in every built space and provides stability, balance, patience, and maturity in character. An unbalance in this element can lead to depression.

5. Space — the sense of hearing. Governs mood swings, new ideas, conceptions, and growth. An imbalance can lead to anxiety disorder, irritating behavior, and insomnia. Ancient Vedas and Science of Architecture or Construction ‘Vaastu Shastra’ have held great importance for thousands of years. Each space has directions, and the interior arrangements must follow the principles of Vaastu to be in sync with the five elements. The interiors have an impact on the people occupying the space and even simple things like a piece of furniture or a painting if kept in a designated positions can attract harmony, positivity, and happiness into lives.

Who Can Opt For This

Anyone looking for enhancing the energies of their

residential or commercial spaces can opt for the remedial methods on offer. The Universal Law of Attraction states that ‘like attracts like’. The GEO 7 SPACE works with this law to create an environment that represents your goals and passions towards inculcating Healthy Energies.

Essentially everything is energy, and every corner of the home has an energy that can be measured and aligned. Dr. S Pujah helps in aligning the chakra petals of the home and marma meridians of the space to bring health, prosperity, fertility and growth by appropriately following the energy principles of nature.

Through the proprietary and engineered concept healing method, the frequencies of spaces and structures are measured, aligned, and corrected with the use of sacred geometry and the five elements balancing method. All of these are finally integrated to lift up spaces.

The right environment should make one feel comfortable and supportive. If life feels out of whack there is surely an imbalance that needs to be addressed. Stay tuned for the next article that focuses on Body energy and its alignment through natural herbs. ✪

The Big Picture

Anyone looking to start (or revamp) a business would do well to follow the model developed by Alexander Osterwalder - The Business Model Canvas (BMC). This tried and tested approach to describing a business has replaced the document most requested by investors and other stakeholders - the Business Plan. Whereas the business plan explains how to set up and run a business from an operational perspective, the business model explains how the business will make money. And making money is what investors expect a business to do.

The BMC breaks down the business model into nine cores: five relating to income and four relating to cost. In part one of this series, we will look at the income side and in part two we will consider the costs and what the overall model tells a business owner about how successful the business will be.

Running a profitable business simply means the costs of delivering the products or services and overheads must be less than the income from selling those products or services. Costs are generally quite easy to assess but calculating the income from sales is a much harder task.

When starting to use the BMC, the first area to be considered in relation to income is Customer Segmentation. Who are your customers? Are they all similar? If not, what are the differences? Where are they located (physically or online)? Are you selling to other businesses or to consumers, or both?

For some businesses you will have a single customer type. You know their profile very well and you know how to reach them. But even in this scenario, it is probably worth spending some time confirming this. By brainstorming with colleagues, existing customers and others not directly involved in your business, might help you identify new opportunities.

Defining your customer segments is

fundamental to how you develop all the following parts of the canvas as each segment probably requires a different marketing and sales approach. Segmentation also allows you to track the most profitable areas of your business and therefore optimise your profitability.

For example, imagine you are a small catering business (not very high-tech, but most businesses aren’t). You could have take-out customers, dine-in customers, and outside catering customers. Each of these segments requires a different approach, which brings us on to the second area of the canvas - the Value Proposition .

The value proposition is how you describe - specifically to each customer segment - what value your product or service will bring to that customer. In our catering company example, the value proposition for

38 ASPIRE OCTOBER 2022 PRO TALK
This revolutionary way of looking at your business has become the preferred methodology used by investors and entrepreneurs alike to assess financial potential

each segment could be as follows. For the take-out customer the core value proposition would be speed and convenience (with price being a consideration). For the dine-in customer, the ambience of the restaurant would be key, together with the range and quality of the menu. Price is less of an issue. Outside catering customers would want to be sure of your quality, timeliness, fixed-price per head options, on-site service. As you can see, all three customer types have different expectations and value different aspects of your business.

Once you know your customers and know how to present your product or service, you need to be able to communicate with them. Under the Channels part of the canvas, you need to understand how your customers want to be reached. Note, this is not how you want to reach your customers. Channels can be direct or indirect, and they can be owned by you or by a partner. To reach take-out customers a sign on the road might be enough. For the dine-in customer, good reviews on Tripadvisor and Google maps might be required. And for outside catering, word of mouth recommendations could be the most powerful channel. (Word of mouth is actually a very important channel for almost any sales activity.)

Once you have customers, you need to begin the process of building and maintaining Customer Relationships . Repeat business is usually much easier to get than acquiring new customers. Again the customer relationship has to fit with how the customer segments expect and want the relationship, and it will vary by segment. At one end, customers might

expect a simple self-service relationship where speed and convenience is paramount. At the other end, very personal direct assistance could be required to close a large deal. When selling online, a simple to use semi-automated website or app could be relevant. Or developing online communities of interest around your product or service might build a strong relationship with your business.

The BMC breaks down the business model into nine cores: five relating to income and four relating to cost

For our catering company take-out customers, a good way to build and maintain the relationships could be with a simple loyalty card. For every 10 or 12 purchases, one is free. For small local businesses, getting to know the names of regular customers could be advantageous. Offering new menu items at a discount for loyal customers can also maintain the relationship. For dine-in customers, having the greeter remember regulars or remembering their favourite drinks will make customers feel special and ‘at home’. Building relationships for outside catering would take more time, with a dedicated salesperson likely to be required, and possibly offering tastings. Having a regularly changing menu or allowing customers to request specific dishes increases the likelihood of repeat business. As you can see, all the relationships are different, require different skills and relate to different sizes of sales.

To understand the Revenue of the business as a whole (the final part of the canvas income model), the size of each customer segment needs to be estimated along with the number of sales per customer, and the value of each sale. The size of the segment may grow over time, or it may have a theoretical maximum. In recent years a focus on the TAM (Total Available Market), the SAM (Serviceable Available Market) and the SOM Serviceable Obtainable Market) has become a popular way of assessing the opportunity. Sales per customer per month, and average value of each go into calculating the overall revenue. And, as mentioned above, you can easily see which segments contribute the most income. To understand which are most profitable, we need to look at the cost side of the canvas, the subject of the second part of this series. ✪

Giving beyond boundaries

In philanthropy, most help within their means, but few go beyond their capacity to help the ones in need! Clarilda Sharon is in conversation with one such Samaritan, Girish Pant, the savior of the Indian Emigrants in UAE and stranded seafarers.

With an unmatched passion for helping people, Girish Pant is a social worker renowned in UAE and India for his relentless humanitarian work. Known as the “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” of the UAE, he has helped hundreds of expatriates who often end up in dire straits in the UAE to reach their motherland safely, helping them every step of the way. He is a recipient of The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) 2019, conferred by the President of India, the highest honor conferred on overseas Indians.

The trigger factor

Hailing from the land of the gods, Uttarakhand, Girish recounts having a rough childhood. He used to board crowded buses to reach school and was often denied a lift on his way back home, as hardly anyone would stop to help him.

But the boy possessed an innate tenacity, which perhaps supports his philanthropic efforts to this day. “I come from a family of Indian freedom fighters, which made me take every setback positively. So, when someone approaches me for help, I do for them what I would do for my brothers and sisters.” In 1988, during his 8th grade, he took a resolution to help people regardless of who they were and where they came from. He started small, unknowing that one day, he would help over 5000 people in more than 15 countries.

Ordinary yet extraordinary How could a commoner have helped evacuate

2500 students from Ukraine during Russia’s attack on the country while being based in Dubai? It all started when four helpless students stuck in Ukraine reached out to him. Heeding their call for help, he connected the dots, sprung to remote action and created over 15 WhatsApp groups in different regions in Ukraine, with nearly 100200 students in each group. He facilitated as a

mediator between the embassy and students, coordinating with External Affairs in guiding them. “I was connected with the distressed students over WhatsApp and would send them advisory details from the embassy and other important details to ensure they were always informed. I also worked with the embassy in arranging food and aid.”

The difference in time zone was a challenge

40 ASPIRE OCTOBER 2022 COMMUNITY SERVICE
“I come from a family of Indian freedom fighters, which made me take every setback positively. So, when someone approaches me for help, I do for them what I would do for my brothers and sisters.”

but never a hurdle for him to function. “I hardly slept during the first few nights. I made sure I was available to respond to their needs irrespective of the time difference”. Thanks to timely government intervention and his efforts, many students safely made their way back to India and the rest to the countries neighboring Ukraine.

The troubles that plague people are not merely external circumstances; some are internal battles too. Girish was a guiding mentor, providing mental health counseling and moral support to many that felt defeated against life’s odds.

Known as the messiah to the seafarers in UAE, he has helped repatriate 1000+ seafarers of different nationalities apart from Indians, including Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis, and more. Moreover, he has not only united families but alerted the concerned authorities about the issues, so they do not recur and victimize anyone else.

One of the most noteworthy incidents Girish recalls is helping an Indian sailor get home after being stranded for a year, anchored eight nautical miles away in a ship from Khalid Port near Sharjah until local authorities rescued him. The man, alone and at sea, was losing the will to live each

day. “He had a limited supply of food and water and no electricity. I stayed connected with him every day, talking to him and motivating him to overcome his depression.”

While his feats make him extraordinary, Girish is nothing but an ordinary man who earns a monthly salary. Despite his limited resources, he has helped many get on a plane back home during the Covid lockdown. While some tickets were arranged through the concerned embassy, the rest were selflessly offered out of pocket. He helped Covid patients often arranging their healthcare, food, chartered flights to get back home, and cremated over 400-500 bodies in Dubai and Sharjah. Apart from these significant services, he played a major role in sending the mortal remains of nearly90 non-covid deaths and suicide cases back to their homes in India from UAE, allowing grieving families closure in tragedy.

No giving up

“It can be a thankless job,” says the selfless man. “But every lock has a key, and every problem comes with a solution, and there is nothing we humans can’t do. I always find a solution and put my 200% effort.”

He firmly believes that life is once, so his mantra is to be an inspiration to others. “I’ve been residing in Dubai for the last 14 years but never bought a house of my own. I could have saved for it, but I didn’t. I always give what I have to

As Christmas is fast approaching, Clarilda Sharon

takes a look at the Krampus’ uproar during Christmas and why Austria should be on your travel list at Yuletide

All around the world, some young children’s most formative memories are made as they lay awake at night for bewitching Santa to arrive in his magic sleigh and eight flying reindeer in eager anticipation of what presents he may bring. Santa Claus – otherwise known as St. Nicholas rewards well-behaved children with gifts and leaves the misbehaved to his evil counterpart, Krampus - the reason kids are hell-bent on staying off the naughty list.

Krampus, fabled to be the son of Norse goddess Hel, who rules over the realm of the dead, pays a visit to the naughty children on 5th December to punish them. Krampus translates from German to mean ‘claw’ and has an appearance straight out of nightmares. He is a half-goat, half-demon who carries chains and a bundle of birch

Asticks to whip children into shape and sometimes throws them into his basket and takes them down to the underworld.

This pagan figure has been celebrated in folklore for hundreds of years, and there is no one definitive version of his story that can be held aloft. Though his origin appears to be unclear, the earliest tales of Krampus have been considered to be originated from Austria and Germany.

What is Krampusnacht, you ask?

Beginning centuries ago, festivals in honor of Krampus continue to this day, as the celebration of St. Nicholas Day would not be the same without honoring his evil servant. In the modern day, Krampus has become a symbol of celebration as a moral compass to be balanced - the good and evil. Krampusnacht or Krampus Night is celebrated in Austria and throughout the Alpine region.

Hundreds of young men and

women parade through the streets of Austria dressed up in elaborate costumes of large horns, thick furry suits made with skin from either a goat or a sheep fashioned with devilish hand-carved masks in the image of Krampus, dancing and scaring all that comes their way on Krampusnacht. The Krampus run or Krampus parade is usually accompanied by St. Nicholas.

The festivities kick off the holiday season with townspeople running rampant through the dark streets. In recent decades, the festival has become so popular that it lasts for days before the creepy Krampus and

Make sure you witness the action from a safe distance and not get very close, or you may get whipped by the Krampus! Also, look out for the thick mulled wine or fruity schnapps served at the stalls nearby as you enjoy the parade.

The Krampus parade usually occurs on St. Nicholas Eve, 5th December, or St. Nicholas Day, 6th December, at various locations. While you’re in Austria witnessing the hell break lose, here’s how you can make the most of the event by exploring the country.

According to the International Trade Administration, “Austria’s economy rebounded with 4.5% GDP growth in 2021 and unemployment lower

than before the onset of the pandemic, but forecasters recently lowered expectations to 3.8% growth for 2022 due to instability stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, Austria is experiencing a record number of vacancies, largely stemming from a shortage of skilled labor.”

The country is primarily an industrial nation and an ideal location for a company, thanks to its outstanding location in the heart of Europe.

Austrian people value tradition, family, environment, and a good work-life balance. They are generally lovers of food with influences from Italian, Hungarian, and Bohemian cooking styles.

Every time you meet someone in an intimate gathering or social occasion, you’ll experience the etiquette in Austria.

As you pack your bags with warm clothes to spend your Christmas holidays in Austria, be enchanted by the darkness and mischief of the Krampus festival, and relax in the alps, don’t forget to marvel at the incredible architecture or indulge in adventure winter sports - Austria is the right place to do it all. Rice? No Dice!

Stop rice and you’ll lose weight!’ - Perhaps this is one phrase most of us have heard at some point or the other, right? But, unfortunately, rice has become rather infamous as a ‘villain’, more than a ‘hero’ in our daily diets.

But are we being quick to judge the humble grain? Or can rice actually aid your journey to a healthier, more active you? Backed by research and expert input, ASPIRE rolls the dice on rice.

The Goodness of Rice

Clinical Dietician, Dr. Prerna Gupta of Millennium medical center spills the beans about rice and its health benefits.

As per her, rice can be good for you. Rice is a starchy grain, one of the most commonly consumed staple grains in many parts of the world. Approximately 3.5 billion people around the world, particularly in Asia and parts of Africa, wholeheartedly eat rice for almost every meal.

According to a study, Chinese adults who consumed rice and vegetables gained less weight. On the contrary, Iranian adults who consumed rice experienced significant weight gain and obesity. Thus, rice alone cannot be pegged as the sole offender to our health; rather, it drastically affects our body when consumed with the wrong counterparts. Ultimately, a rice-centric meal is incomplete without its accompanying portions of vegetables, meats, or salads.

“Rice can contribute to weight loss and healthy living when eaten as part of a well-balanced diet. A healthy meal must have all the nutrients; therefore, rice consumption must be accompanied with lentils, veggies, or meat,” says Dr. Prerna.

Is It OK To Eat Rice Every day?

As with most things, everything seems nice only when consumed in a measured quantity. There is nothing inherently ‘fattening’ about rice, so it ultimately depends on the quantity intake.

Studies reveal that serving rice in smaller bowls can lead to a lesser intake. Reducing the size of the bowl can

thereby reduce calories, blood sugar levels, and body weight.

According to studies published in the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, over consumption of rice can lead to cancer. This is because white rice readily absorbs arsenic from its growing environment. Arsenic, while a naturally occurring element found in water and soil, is known to be a human carcinogen in higher quantities. Therefore, eating unwieldy portions of rice can pose a health risk.

“Afternoon is the best time to have rice because your body has had a good gap after breakfast and this is when it needs the energy to sustain the next 7-8 hours. Besides, our body’s metabolism is higher during the daytime, thereby aiding in proper digestion,” adds Dr. Prerna.

Red, Brown, or White?

Health aficionados like to indulge in the endless

debate on which rice is healthier, low on carbohydrates, or suitable for weight loss. While white rice is the most commonly available, health-conscious folks often switch to red or brown rice. So, which one is actually better- white, red, or brown?

White rice is a much-refined, hulled, and milled version of raw rice. Despite its universal appeal and easy digestibility, the refining process, which removes most of its dietary fiber, makes this a relatively less healthy option. Further processing also erodes B Vitamins and other nutrients, leaving behind starch primarily.

Red and brown rice have similar nutritional constituents as white rice, except that they are partially hulled or un-hulled, meaning that the precious fiber is present in the grains you eat. Both red and brown rice are rich in B vitamins, calcium, zinc and iron, manganese, selenium, and magnesium.

So, red or brown rice is what you must consume if you’re looking to lose weight. Of course, the portion can vary from person to person, depending on one’s requirements. Typically, 100 grams of cooked rice daily* is usually prescribed in a regular diet.

*estimate varies based on your body’s energy needs.

Health Benefits of Eating Rice

According to Dr. Prerna, there are several health benefits of consuming rice:

1. Rice Is a Powerhouse of Energy

Although fad diets villainize carbs, the reality is that our bodies require carbohydrates for their normal functioning. In fact, we need energy even when we’re resting. Rice is rich in carbohydrates and is, therefore, a good source of energy. White rice has more carbs, gets digested faster, and provides instant energy. This is another reason white rice can be bad for those trying to lose weight. Rice is digested very fast, thereby making you hungry faster.

2. Promotes Heart Health

Rice is naturally blessed with anti-inflammatory properties. This means eating rice can prevent the deposition of atherosclerotic plaque on the walls of the blood vessels. This eventually decreases the risk of conditions like heart attack, stroke, etc. Brown and red rice are especially good for the heart because they contain husk.

3. Easy To Digest

Rice is not only easy to cook, but it’s also easy to digest. Unlike brown or red rice, white rice lacks a compound called phytic acid, an anti-nutrient that causes digestive issues.

Rice Recipes You Can Eat Guilt-Free

1. Herby Vegetable Paneer Baked Rice

Paneer is a good source of protein, while rice is rich in carbs. The veggies bring in vitaminsmaking this a balanced meal. Besides, it is baked!

2. Khichdi (rice and lentil porridge)

One of the age-old, yet delicious meals, Khichdi is one of the most nutritious one-pot meals you can have. The amino acid present in rice and lentils makes this a protein-rich meal. Add in some veggies, and voila, the vitamins are in, making it healthy and delicious comfort food.

3. Chicken Curry Rice

Who can resist this? Needless to say, chicken is rich in protein, and combining rice with protein only increases the nutritional value and lets you feel full longer as well, beating those pesky cravings. So go ahead and have a rice day… because rice can actually be nice! ✪

tion can be fed to the profile to be accessed whenever necessary.

Efficiency and Mechanics

• The grand slam feature is its architectural foundation - the electric drivetrain concept.

• The new EQS brings the luxury of silence in the form of a sound-insulated arrangement of the drivetrain, making it possible to enjoy a noiseless commute or a pleasant drive.

• The car bolts through the air with a drag coefficient of 0.20 making it an aerodynamically savvy wheeler.

• In favorable conditions, the Eco Assistant system sets the vehicle on sailing mode, which consumes a fraction of energy compared to normal mode. In addition, the ‘Zero Layer’ feature of the MBUX interacts with the driver, suggesting fuel-efficient ways to drive.

• Charging an EQS is a breeze with the plug and charge concept. Over 500,000 charging

points worldwide are accessible to Mercedes EQ customers through ‘Mercedes me Charge’. Bidirectional charging transforms the vehicle into a power source, so you don’t have to worry about household power cuts.

Engine and Performance

• The combined electric drive train of 385 kW of the EQS results in an efficient performance ranging up to 782 kms.

• Spread out across the axles, the electric motors enable an all-wheel drive exhibiting 516 horsepower output with 611 pound-feet of torque.

• The acceleration rate takes you 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds. The expected top speed is 130 mph making the vehicle a true performer. The AIRMATIC suspension system is why the car is very stable on road.

Safety

• Automatic emergency braking, sensing a preceding vehicle in motion or rest, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active steering assist, lane keep and change assist, traffic sign recognition, active blind-spot monitoring, and standard pre-safe impulse control are the features making the driving experience a safest world class luxury.

Near Misses

• The buttons on the steering wheel are somewhat of a mismatch to the luxury sedan since they are not as intuitive as the AI-operated MBUX.

• The roofline slopes towards the end, which causes the passengers' heads to come in close contact with the roof while boarding. No cup holders are found.

Nemesis

• Tesla model S Plaid renders an acceleration rate of 0-60 mph in 1.99 seconds, generating 1020 horsepower which is not achieved by the EQS luxury range.

Price point

X-factor

• With advanced mobility, this sedan is the world's most aerodynamic vehicle. Furthermore, the technology has made concerted efforts so that there is no trade-off between aesthetics, luxury, technology, and the green concept.

• Mercedes- Benz 580 4MATIC starts from AED 720,000, with the price varying with colors and trims.

When does it launch?

• The launch of this techno savvy spectacle is expected in November 2022 in Dubai. J

The Green Smile

Revival of urban gardening has led to a renewed love for indoor plants, beautifully set balconies, and well-landscaped gardens and backyards. Megha Agrawal digs into this green trend which Is growing stronger roots everyday

CCovid lockdown restricted human population to their homes and rekindled the need to get back to nature. Social media caught fire with viral DIY gardens and balcony posts, and even the most reticent gardeners began to discover their green thumb. The smallest balconies and rooftops sported trendy foliage and home gardens began to flourish.

Scientifically it makes absolute sense that we bring living plants into our homes and backyards. Our ancient, cave-dwelling ancestors lived in forests for millennia, and our DNA carries that racial memory. Moreover, being near nature calls to and soothes the primitive parts of our brain and universally evokes a sense of wellbeing and freshness.

Unsurprisingly, the green fever has only gained in strength. UAE has especially seen a significant resurgence in this design style - be it rooftop gardens, tiny

balconies spotting a few plants or vast, manicured, beautiful spaces adorning statuesque villas.

Real estate companies have taken this trend in stride as well. Properties with well thought out exterior spaces are more alluring. People want to find refuge and sanctuary in their homes, and a landscaped yard or a charming green balcony is the way to go. Commercial spaces like cafes, hotels, restaurants, and even malls are seeing a lot of budgets dedicated to landscaping.

Landscaping is the discipline of architecture that deals with designing outdoor spaces like yards, gardens, lawns, rooftops, or indoor spaces connected to outdoors - like courtyards, patios, foyers, or skylit spaces.

Architect and Landscape Designer Arpit Jain says, “Landscaping is an integral part of architecture. No structure design is complete without considering the ground space and landscaping of its open or semi-

The Major 2022 Trends for Outdoor Landscaping

While landscaping can encompass many elements, plantation remains an integral part. Designed to evoke certain emotions in the user like a sense of awe, tranquility, peace, as well as happiness and vitality, landscaping is not about throwing plants wherever one's fancy lands. Professional landscapers carefully consider and select flora and guide your entire space towards a design aesthetic to reflect your style and sense of purpose. Form and function are the battle cry of today and the current trends reflect this design philosophy. Let's check them out.

Outdoor Living

The most defining trend for outdoor landscaping this year is seeing the outdoors as an extension of the indoors, bringing the style, comfort, colors, and vibe of the home’s interior and continuing it outdoors. Incorporating features like firepits, barbeque pits, outdoor kitchen, stylized patios, and gazebos are some ways to make outdoor living more engaging. Comfortable seating matching the color schemes of the home is also trending right now. Customized pool bars, fish ponds, and even artificial beaches are designed for a better outdoor experience. Plunge pools - three by three meters in width and depth and ideal for wading and lounging are very popular right now as an interactive water feature. Nothing is impossible, only limited by the customer's imagination and budget.

Alfresco Entertainment

Continuing the theme of outdoor living, more and more people are using their outdoor spaces to entertain guests and throw parties. Winters in UAE are incredibly pleasant, and the best house parties always spill outside. Barbeques, outside dining and drinks, events like anniversaries, birthdays, and even movie nights - the culture for alfresco entertainment have become very popular indeed. Live fencing - sectioning off an area with a living hedge for express purposes is an indemand feature.

51 2022 OCTOBER ASPIRE

An ‘Urban Design’

A design concept for bigger spaces like cities, towns, and suburb planning, it has perforated private landscaping as well. It involves planning with economy, sustainability, function, durability, and form in mind. For example, landscapists in cities are coming up with innovative ‘Vertical Garden’ ideas - utilizing walls for plantation and layering the vegetation vertically to create green density in smaller spaces - The ’Miyawaki method’ is one of the most popular plantation methods where around three hundred trees and shrubs can be planted easily in a parking space of six cars. Used worldwide by landscapers and urban designers, the Miyawaki method has helped cultivate more than 3000 forests in urban settings.

Technological Convenience

A plethora of smart outdoor lights are available now whose intensity, colors, and brightness can be controlled via smartphones to set different vibes. Sophisticated sound systems suited for outdoor acoustics to provide immersive sound, smart irrigation systems powered by AI to auto irrigate as per current weather conditions to keep foliage healthy, and even special wifi so that there is always connectivity and opportunity for more entertainment like outdoor gaming, video-streaming… now you can be close to nature, twenty-first-century style.

Beyond Business / style 52 ASPIRE OCTOBER 2022

Sustainable and Eco-friendly Elements

A lot of elements used for outdoor landscaping are now focused on reducing carbon footprint. Landscapers now use more indigenous plants for plantation, use systems to consume wastewater for irrigation, build beauty features from natural elements like stone and wood, and use renewable sources like solar energy to power lights and fountains.

Health and Wellbeing

The prime purpose of a green outdoor space remains the same - to provide a place to experience serenity and peace. Rather than focusing on showy elements, landscapers now focus on bringing true comforting elements to the user - like a personalized zen garden, aromatherapy patch for certain ailments, water feature to increase calmness of mind, paths for walking and exercise.

While these trends look exclusive to larger spaces and professional landscapers, there are a lot of ways that you can incorporate them into your own green space, especially an open or semi-closed balcony. Let's admit it, many of us are city rats and apartment dwellers. But, urban landscaping is for everyone. Depending on budget and interest, all of us can have a little bit of a green haven in our lives. An obvious way to start is with plants suited to the climate, that are easy to care for. Wild riotous bunches of deep-colored Bougainvilleas, stately Frangipani, swoonworthy Hibiscus, and pretty Takoma are some examples. Pair them with hardy succulents, cacti, and grasses to create variety. Appointing a comfortable seating area with outdoor furniture is another essential part of landscaping. Designing a seating space transforms any outdoor area from a pretty spot to a true haven to sit and relax. Utilize the vertical space to add visual interest by hanging pots

and baskets dripping with plants to add height and drama to your little garden.

Stringing some outdoor lights adds whimsy and spark and instantly elevates the space. Adding a focal point like a decor piece or a fancy plant can give an interesting direction to your landscaping. Placing artificial grass is a quick, easy, in-trend way to increase the space’s appeal without the hassle of growing actual grass. A bug hotel or bird feeder will bring some pretty friends to your garden. Installing a small sound element like a water feature is also a great way to bring tranquility to your landscaped haven.

These are just some of the ways to make a striking difference, with minimal effort, to your outdoor living space. It's always better to try and start with a few plants and build up your garden from there. Use your imagination and creativity to create a verdant escape, both for body and mind. A little goes a long way with outdoor landscaping. ✪

PRAYERS FOR LIGHT AND STRENGTH

We live in exceptionally challenging times. For many people, conventional religion no longer offers enough solace or insight to be useful, and hence the pursuit of “spirituality without religion” has become increasingly popular. But there is a dearth of truly powerful spiritual voices, free of commandments or fables, that can reach the heart and give us inspiration that we can adapt to our needs. FrenchAmerican writer Lyna Tevenaz has such a voice. Drawing from her life experiences as an orphan, single mother, and a dedicated seeker who has explored many spiritual perspectives, she offers a powerful collection of 50 prayers for the challenges that come with urgent times we all face. Most of the prayers are accompanied by “active meditations” and brief affirmations that span five major categories of human concern: Relationships, Family, the Self, the World, and the Inner Life. “Prayer enables us to disengage from fear-driven thinking,” Lyna explains in her introduction. “It is a silken cloth that wipes away our heart’s anxieties.... These words are the result of what I have learned about prayer so far, but now they are yours to practice and evolve for your own purposes.”

We are the Universe

Our bodies are so incredibly special. The heart beats, the liver regenerates, neurons fire at impossible to fathom speeds, cells renew themselves, the gut hosts a whole microwaved of life… and perhaps it’s time we loved our bodies in their magnificent perfections and imperfections. Because…

1. Your body remembers what the mind forgets. And it will recall unresolved trauma in illnesses.

2. If you measure yourself only by the external, you will measure others the same way too.

3. Body shaming is wrong. Especially when you do it to your own.

4. Food is medicine. Medicine doesn’t always taste good, but that doesn’t mean you don’t take it.

5. Trauma doesn’t happen to you. It happens inside you. This is tough, takes effort, but is, ultimately, fixable.

6. Weight gain, aging, graying, wrinkles, stretch marks, imperfections, breakouts body hair are normal. Normalize normal.

7. Water, water everywhere, drink enough of it, sit beside it once in a while, cleanse yourself with it, immerse yourself in it, cry when you must, in grief, or with laughter. Your body needs water.

8. Move your body. Dance, stretch, walk, clean, garden, take the stairs, get the zoomies... movement, not necessarily exercise, is the goal. Movement releases trauma.

9. Your brain controls your body. You can control your brain. 10. You are a divine soul driving an incredibly complex bit of biological equipment. Drive it gently, but firmly.

We got these bodies we own by sheer luck. We are, each of us, 13.4 billion years in the making and there will probably never ever again be a body like yours or mine in this vast universe. With these bodies we get to smell the rain, see stars in the sky, taste ice cream, hug our children, cuddle puppies, listen to music, dance in joy, feel the warmth of the sun and the kiss of the wind... yet we shame it, starve it, overfeed it, dislike it, compare it, punish it with all kinds of toxic self-harm... but perhaps, if we focused on the incredible experience of just having a body we could start to enjoy this miracle we have been given and the wondrous things our bodies do for us every single day. We would then understand that, “We are,” as Rumi said, “the universe in ecstatic motion.” ✪
