Editor's note
Man-O-Man
What’s all the fuss about being a man?
Well, the same as all the fuss that goes with being a woman, I would say.
Right from the time of Adam and Eve… all through the eons and eras’ gone by… all that has happened, transpired, or conspired over the ages – the definitions of roles, the demarcations of sexes, the demonizing of genders; all the policies laid down, movements and marches made to raise a point, in praise or protest; all the movies and documentaries that highlighted the plight or power of being a male or a female; the pride and prejudice that each group has ever held for their kind or the other; amidst all the patriarchy and misogyny; amidst all the matriarchy and feminism; amidst all this and everything in between, there is one thing that has remain unchanged – that we need the other to complement our existence. If not for anything else, we need the other to take forward the human race.
To all the men out there… we love you as much as we love ourselves. Maybe sometimes more, maybe sometimes less… but we definitely cannot imagine, let alone want to live in
an all-woman’s world. And as we celebrate yet another International Men’s Day, we raise a toast to all your achievements, all the positive value you bring to the world, and all the contributions to society, community, and the family you belong to.

China’s digital economy hits $6.3 trillion
A recent report released by the Chinese Academy of Cyberspace Studies revealed that China’s digital economy hit a new high of $6.3 trillion (45.5 trillion yuan) in 2021. This accounts for 39.8% of the country’s GDP. The report, released during the 2022 World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit, held in the water-town of Wuzhen in east China’s Zhejiang Province also revealed that the digital economy has become a key factor in China’s stable economic development.
Another report titled “The World Internet Development 2022” was also released at the summit. As per this report, the total digital economy across 47 countries in the world reached $38.1 trillion in 2021. This also revealed a whopping 15.6% increase year-on-year.
The report also added that the digital economy has been a driving factor in recovering the global economy. The theme for this year’s summit was “Towards a Shared Digital Future in a Connected World — Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace”. The event was attended by more than 2,100 guests from over 120 countries and regions; online and in-person.
Also, new research conducted by RedSeer Strategic Consultants; a global digital services consultancy, revealed that MENA’s digital economy is predicted to hit a whopping $400 billion mark by 2030. As of 2021, MENA’s digital economy stands at an estimate of $91 billion.
The spike in numbers will also bring with it structural changes in the region’s digital economy with sectors like edtech and healthtec emerging as top performers. Meanwhile, other industries like online travel, food and bill payment sectors might witness a decline in their growth rates.
Furthermore, MENA’S digital economy is also likely to witness a geographical shift. Earlier, the boom in the digital economy was more due to the contribution from Saudi Arabia and the UAE. However, growth is expected to be more balanced now with all other MENA countries, especially Egypt, contributing to 50% of the region’s digital economy. The remaining 50% will come from Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The total digital economy across 47 countries in the world reached $38.1 trillion in 2021. This also revealed a whopping 15.6% increase year-on-year
The region’s Gen Z is predicted to be more economically active this year, contributing to a 30% increase in the overall online retail spend. “Historically, growth [in MENA’s digital economy] used to be broad-based. Now it will be more focused on a few sectors,” RedSeer said. The study also said that online retail will contribute to 20% of the growth rate in the next decade, with grocery and fashion expected to grow faster. Etech and healthtech are set to witness a 10-time jump while other sectors like food, which have a high online penetration now, will see a rapid decline.
Overall, MENA’s digital adoption is improving, with the time spent, online, in these countries touching over eight hours per day, as in the UAE and KSA.
Bahrain announces discovery of two new natural gas reservoirs
The Gulf is considered a gold mine for oil. And now, Bahrainalthough known as one of the smallest oil-producers in the Arab world has discovered two new natural gas reserves. This comes as a result of the government’s efforts to boost natural gas production in the country.
Bahrain News Agency reported that the discoveries were made in Bahrain’s Al Juba and Al Jawf reservoirs. Soon, an announcement was made by Bahrain’s energy investment and development arm, Nogaholding. However, the report did not provide an estimate of the reserves in the two discoveries.
The chairman of Nogaholding, Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad said that the latest discoveries will pave the way for the development and production of natural gas, to be used by the Kingdom in the future.
This is not the first time
The chairman of Nogaholding, Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad said that the latest discoveries will pave the way for the development and production of natural gas, to be used by the Kingdom in the future
Bahrain has discovered new gas sources. Earlier in 2018, Bahrain claimed to discover 20 trillion cubic feet of gas and 80 billion barrels of shale oil. The country hopes to produce these in the next five years with the help of
international energy companies.
Apart from Bahrain, the UAE and Saudi Arabia also announced new gas discoveries earlier this year. In February, Adnoc announced the discovery of two trillion standard cubic feet of significant natural gas resources, off Abu Dhabi’s coast.
Besides, Saudi Arabia also announced the discovery of several new natural gas fields in various pockets of the country including the Empty Quarter, the northern border, and in the eastern region.
With countries globally focusing on mitigating global warming to protect the environment, the demand for gas has significantly risen in recent years.
According to a report published by Shell this February, the global trade in liquefied natural gas has gone up by 6% to 380 million tonnes, in 2021. China and South Korea led the growth in LNG demand last year. J
‘Red Gold’ Saffron grows in Sharjah’s desert
We know Dubai is famous for gold, but what if we tell you gold ‘grows’ in the country now! Well, not quite literally, but saffron, also called ‘Red Gold’, is now produced in Sharjah as UAE’s first saffron harvest. Saffron gets its name ‘Red Gold’ owing to its scarcity and massive demand, as well as the special conditions it requires to grow and harvest.
The vertical fields of “Red Gold” are produced without the use of water, soil or fertilizers. The brain behind this project is an agricultural technology firm, VeggiTech. The firm has cultivated about 150,000 crocus sativa bulbs, brought in from the Netherlands, in Al Zubair’s vertical farms.
Each of these flowers produce three tiny stigmas from which saffron is extracted. The first crop grown in the UAE in this fashion is expected to yield 5.5 kilograms of saffron. It takes about nine to ten months for the saffron to reach maturity before it is ready for harvest. The laboratories are equipped with a special air-handling unit to
create the right environmental condition for growth. This will ensure the right amount of carbon dioxide, light, temperature, and humidity are available to the crops.
The cost of the spice is then determined depending on the quality and the grade. A rough estimate of $850 to $3100 per kilogram has been evaluated for saffron cultivated in this manner.
The vertical fields of “Red Gold” are produced without the use of water, soil or fertilizers by agricultural technology firm, VeggiTech
Vertical farming is a relatively new technique used in the UAE to combat water scarcity and extreme climatic conditions.
In this process, tightly controlled soil is used along with artificial LED lights to stimulate growth. Farms that use this method can produce 10 times more yield than those that follow the traditional farming methods. The technique is particularly working well in the UAE due to the harsh growing conditions.
Ghazal Shafiee, quality manager at VeggiTech told The National that, “Saffron is a sensitive crop to grow and not everyone has the knowledge required to cultivate it. Using this system, we have much less area required for the entire production. Usually, land water and herbicides are used, but by vertical farming, a smaller area is needed with greater production and quality,” she added.
Besides, the UAE is one of the top five buyers of Iranian bulk saffron. Therefore, growing spice domestically makes the country less reliant on imports. VeggiTech also uses a similar method to cultivate 50 other types of crops at four farms in the UAE. J
EYE OF THE
BEHOLDER
From love stories to fantasies, the power to see through the eyes of the other has always been sought after. Today, technology is driving it to reality. CLARILDA SHARON explores how eye tracking technology could be the next big deal
Long ago, people travelled long distances and made efforts to meet others, but today, a “Hey Siri, call Erhan” is all that it takes to talk to someone living halfway across the world. Technology, undoubtedly, has made our lives easier. but the future holds much, much more!
For years, we’ve used mice and keyboards to command and control the screens and are still doing so. But, imagine scrolling through a webpage by merely staring at it and flipping pages with a gaze. Eye tracking – a sensor technology, makes it doable by understanding the state and activity of the eye. From tracking the point of gaze to the pupil’s reaction to different stimuli, eye tracking converts eye movements into a data stream. Simply put, eye tracking is an ideal spouse that understands your needs by merely looking into your eyes.
BARRIERS TO BRIDGES
Eye technology not only sees what you see but also observes what you’re ignoring and where you’re not looking at. The primary reason for this cutting-edge technology to grow in demand amongst research professionals
Detecting your presence and following what you’re looking at in real time is what eye tracking amazingly does. Comprising cameras, light sources, and computing capabilities, it decodes eye movements and translates them to actionable insights using advanced image processing and machine learning – a crucial technology that understands thinking process and human behavior. From skipping a few sections to re-reading others, humans respond to visual stimuli by paying attention to some things more than others. Anchoring to this, the eye technology not only sees what you see but also observes what you’re ignoring and where you’re not looking at. How your eyes move around a page, or a design reveals a lot about what has captured your attention and what has not - the primary reason for this cutting-edge technology to grow in demand amongst research professionals. An infrared light source is used to detect the reflections in the pupil and cornea, which is tracked by an infrared camera. Unlike other light sources, the infrared light source gives appropriate accuracy. The collected data is then fed to algorithms and software to calculate the user’s eyes and gaze points. It permits tasks to be easily facilitated, which were once cumbersome and inconceivable - thanks to the advancement in sensor technology. Its applications are limitless, both in research and commercial use.
Screen-based eye trackers (also called desktop, stationary, or remote) and eye tracking glasses (also known as head-mounted) are
the two principal types of eye trackers among the many different ones. Screen-based devices require respondents to interact with screen-based content while sitting in front of a monitor while the latter is fitted near the eyes allowing the respondents to move freely. Though both track the eye, the data from their usage can differ.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Eye movements are powerful indicators of decision-making, preference, and human behavior. Our eyes follow what interests us and our pupils dilate when we’re having an intense emotional response, or we’re intrigued by something that’s in front of us. When researchers

The future will see a larger impact on how buildings are designed by empiricism rather than convention. The hunger for scientists and researchers in healthcare to innovate and develop technology to improve the existing ones has been one of the major reasons for the evolution of healthcare. And eye tracking technology has revealed assurance to improve the efficiency of this space. Eye tracking exists in a state of constant evolution and advancements and the current environment is pushing researchers to experiment in new ways. The Global Eye Tracking Market was valued at USD 816.2 million in 2021 and is predicted to reach USD 4.86 billion by 2030 with a CAGR of 21.8% from 20222030, according to Grand View Research
Consumer research and advertisement are the growth drivers of the eye tracking market. When applied to UX and user interface, the insight into shopper behavior and buying decisions from eye tracking allows companies to create websites and designs that are more likely to attract attention and conversion. In marketing, this data can be used to optimize the performance of a brand online. Growing adaptations of communicative devices, robotics, contact lenses, and biometrics are expected to propel the growth of the market in the coming years.

Needless to say, it is inevitable for researchers to look at the learning process and teaching materials, and how that information is looked at and use the technology to refine the process in a way that most benefits readers.
Virtually, anything that involves a visual component can potentially become the subject of eye tracking and tapping the power of eyes to see what others see, and how they perceive, can open a whole new world of possibilities and create significant growth opportunities for market players in the coming years.
LEADERS IN THE RACE
Tobii, a global leader in eye tracking based in Sweden, uses attention computing to help its clients capture and understand human attention and intent. Recently, Tobii partnered with HeadVantage to bring eye tracking to sports fans and athletes and also partnered with VR streaming platform LIV to see if eye tracking can bring more realism to even photorealistic avatars. In one of the recent developments, EyeLink 1000, a hardware of SR Research, Canada, tracked the eye movements of dogs while making them watch a video of two people throwing a Frisbee back and forth 10 times with results indicating that dogs can track a moving object. One of its kind, EyeTech, a global leader in Health AI with its revolutionary eye tracking and tunable
technology platform launched EyeOn device, an eye tracking tablet with built-in, AI-enabled eye-tracking technology. Eyeware’s real-time 3D gaze coding software GazeSense enables head pose and eye gaze tracking using regular webcams or commercial depth-sensing cameras and its AI-powered webcam app Eyeware Sense allows the cursor to follow the gaze. These are just some of the innovations to emerge. Other significant players in the market like Seeing Machines (Australia), Smart Eye (Sweden) and EyeTracking (US) are emerging as game changers in this quickly evolving industry.
DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD
Advantageously, eye tracking can tell researchers exactly what the subjects are looking at and how they respond to it in their mind - calling for an elimination of self-reporting and guesswork. The fixation and scan patterns can provide indications of cognition and outline areas of specific interest. On the downside, tracking requires specialized pieces of equipment that are expensive and is not easily available to many startups and small companies. On the other hand, when subjects are aware that their eyes are being tracked, they may behave differently than they would without the tracker—perhaps trying to like something they don’t or avoiding looking at something they otherwise would. This calls for a re-check on the reliability of the data. As eye tracking continues to be in its research and development stage, there remains a multitude of challenges that need to be approached.
IN A NUTSHELL
Humans rely on communication to build connections. The alpha of all communication tools is the eye. Eyes send and receive social cues, recognize feelings, and display and understand emotions. Eye contact is key to strong communication.
The methods of technology have improved over the decade. Systems have become smaller and lighter, the software is more flexible, data much better, and insights more actionable. And the constant evolution of eye tracking has made it easier to see the world through the eyes of the consumer. The future will be shaped by the continued application of eye tracking technology in diverse ways and there appears great promise in its inherent potential.
But so far, we have only scraped the surface of what we can accomplish with the help of eye tracking. The progress has been incredible, and no matter the present state, the full impact of eye tracking technology is still ahead of us. It is certainly something we can look forward to. ✪

DELIVERI DATA
DATA IS CRUCIAL FOR ACCOMPLISHING ANY BUSINESS GOALS, ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE CONSUMERCENTRIC NATURE OF BUSINESSES TODAY, BASED ON THE VALUES BUYERS MOST CHERISH. SREERAM VISWANATH EXPLORES WHY IT IS EVEN MORE CRITICAL FOR COMPANIES TO USE SUCH DATA RESPONSIBLY
Many of us can remember a time when telephone directories and the Yellow Pages were our one-stop-shop to gather information or access data. Sales people went door-to-door and selling and buying were about the personal touch. A newspaper delivered to the house held all the information we could acquire about the world. How much things have changed in the last two decades. From morning milk brought to you in a glass bottle, you can now have advertising and news that targets your personal wants and desires in an almost scarily precise fashion. Big data has arrived and with all its life-enhancing aspects brings with it some unpleasant nuances.
ONWith the prevalence of data-driven algorithms, websites and applications have become increasingly personalized. As businesses can collect information about their users to offer more relevant content and services, this trend is likely to continue. Users trust companies with personal information because they expect their data to be used responsibly. But recent reports across the world convey a picture that is not entirely rosy, with user data being exploited by even reputed organizations. It becomes of paramount importance that corporate ethical data utilization is the cornerstone of responsible data management.
WHAT IS IT?
Corporate ethical data utilization is a framework for data collection and utilization that prioritizes user privacy. It not only deals with avoiding illegal data practices but entails data usage in a way that respects user privacy, autonomy, and rights. The goal here is to use data to benefit both the business and the customers while ensuring that user information is safe and used ethically.
Although this buzzword may sound similar to responsible data management, it has a broader scope. Corporate ethical data utilization extends beyond the technical aspects of data management and into the realm of business strategy. It encourages businesses to think about the value of their data and the ways in which it can be ethically and appropriately utilized.
MORE THAN A FAD
“Data privacy and protection are clear priorities for consumers,” says Vijay Jajoo, Principal, cyber security services, KPMG.
Every company functions with the power of data. A powerful tool can also be a potent one, which is why we are talking about the responsible use of data. Many prominent names across the world, including financial institutions that were once highly esteemed,
suffered major losses due to data breaches. The social networking community hasn’t yet fully recovered from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a breach that exposed the data of billions of Facebook users. A data leak in Yahoo’s system compromised the information of millions of its users in 2013, costing the company $350 million in damages. This happened at a crucial time for Yahoo, as its value plummeted by $350 million just before Verizon looked like acquiring the company. MySpace, another social networking company, lost 360 million records to data fraud, a scandal that shook the social media community before Facebook’s Analytica scandal managed to steal the headlines.
While consumers like to be rendered the personalized treatment that only data collection can offer, it’s high time businesses put a framework that ensures data is used appropriately and stored securely. User trust is essential for companies to thrive in the new data economy, failing which they might incur severe reputational or financial losses, some of which they may never recover from.
“As the power of contemporary enterprises grow, they bear a larger responsibility for going beyond compliance to engage with ethics,” says Laura Norén,
SIGN OF THE TIMES
THE SECRET MOOD CONTROL EXPERIMENTS OF 2012
Almost eleven years ago, in January 2012, Facebook released a mood control experiment on 689,003 of its users. They were shown positive or negative content in their news feeds in order to guage their emotional responses to the curated content. The participants were unaware that they were engaging into this experiment.
Facebook’s 9,000-word data-use policy stated that the company had the legal means to conduct such experiments. When users signed up to the company’s policies, they had consequently agreed to their information and responses being used “data analysis, testing, [and] research.”
Unsurprisingly this did not go down well, when the experiment came to light and the consensus was that the experiment extremely disturbing and in clear violation of people’s morals rights.
AND THEY SAID
“A better world won’t come about simply because we use data; data has its dark underside.”
- Mike Loukides, Ethics and Data Science“Privacy means people know what they’re signing up for, in plain language, and repeatedly. I believe people are smart. Some people want to share more than other people do. Ask them.”
– Steve Jobs, Apple“If you make customers unhappy in the physical world, they might each tell 6 friends. If you make customers unhappy on the Internet, they can each tell 6,000 friends.”

Corporate ethical data utilization extends beyond the technical aspects of data management and into the realm of business strategy
visiting scholar at NYU’s Center for Data Science and VP of privacy and trust at Obsidian Security.
A WIN-WIN PROPOSITION
Ethical data utilization is a lot more than a corporate responsibility platform and can render a range of benefits, which include:
Stronger relationships with customers – Customers who value their data will stick with those providers who offer transparency in how they gather, process, and store data. Businesses that demonstrate a commitment to transparent, responsible data practices will earn a reputation as trustworthy partners and therefore earn the much-needed competitive advantage. This will result in stronger customer relationships that benefit both the customer and the business.
Reduced risk of regulation - Consumers are increasingly aware of the ways businesses collect data and expect companies to be transparent about their practices. Companies that fail to meet these expectations risk regulatory action, including fines, shutdowns, and other penalties.
Improved reputation and search engine optimization (SEO) - Companies that collect and use data ethically will have a better reputation among customers and search engines. This will result in higher brand recognition, increased traffic, and better conversion rates.
Greater financial impetus – Companies with proven efficacy and willingness to prioritize the appropriate usage of customer data will generally have a better reputation, encouraging funds from investors or credit facilities from banks.
WORKING THE HOW’S
Ethical data usage may seem like a buzzword, a piece of copywriting, or promotional material for businesses with higher ambitions. But many data breaches of the last decade and the consequential impact on consumer behavior point to a trend wherein customers are wary of the data threat, despite their intentions to trade their information for value-centric products or services. Yes, businesses need a framework, but what exactly can it be? Let’s dive deeper to understand this.
Despite much evidence to the contrary, businesses, many of them, practice ethical data utilization. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook proudly says, “We do the right thing, even when it’s not easy” (an Apple user will agree with glee). Google works with comprehensive security algorithms to satisfy its global user base. A read into Uber’s privacy policy shows that they entrust users with control of data shared by them.
The aforementioned companies and many others follow their unique data safety practices. But in common – they provide clear, accessible information. This includes the types of user data collected and why, the source of data, whether the data had informed consent for use by third parties, whether it contains any information that shouldn’t be publi-
Businesses that demonstrate a commitment to transparent, responsible data practices will earn a reputation as trustworthy partners and therefore earn the muchneeded competitive advantage
cized, etc. Importantly, they only collect the necessary data for their core operations. This means using data minimization techniques to avoid unnecessary data collection.
Companies must educate their users about the types of data collected and used. This includes providing clear and easy-to-find information about the company’s data practices. Additionally, businesses can use data visualization and tagging tools to make their data practices more transparent. Frequent interactions with the users also give the latter a closer look at the company’s practices, building a culture of trust. This may include communicating with users via email, in-app notifications, or social media. Companies can also use surveys and focus groups to get users’ feedback about their data practices.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Data-driven companies can build on user data to improve their products and services, but only if they use that data ethically. Corporate ethical data utilization is emerging as a critical tool that protects the rights of those who make your data-driven business prosperous. Businesses should be transparent about their data practices, minimize data collection, and use data-based insights to inform their decision-making. Companies that practice ethical data utilization have stronger customer relationships and earn a stellar reputation. And the majority of such case studies spell success. Something that every company aspires to. ✪
THE META GALA
The word Metaverse has taken the world by storm, yet there’s much that is unknown or unsaid. Vaishnavi Venkataraman digs deeper into what this hypervirtual world is all about and if this is the new future
n October 21, 2021, social media fans went berserk after Facebook rebranded itself as Meta. Although this was not the first time the term Metaverse was used, it was the first time we started experiencing a ‘new’ world.
A GRAPHICALLY-RICH WORLD
Imagine a graphically-rich world where people
can exist, work, eat, play, shop, and do pretty much everything from their couch in the physical world. This is the Metaverse.
The term Metaverse was described in Neal Stephenson’s Novel Snow Crash, in the 90s. Later on, several companies developed online communities based on this concept. In brief, the Metaverse can be described as the evolution or the next generation
of the internet. Interaction with other people is one of the main characteristics of the Metaverse. People can appear in the form of 3D avatars in the form of robots, virtual agents, or even manifestations of artificial intelligence.
In the metaverse, people use digital avatars to represent themselves, communicate with each other, and form communities. Digital currency is used to buy goods like weapons for gaming, clothes, and other such commodities. Users can also travel into this digital world without any actual goal, using a virtual reality headset and controllers.
METAVERSE VS INTERNET
The internet is a place where users can communicate with each other, interact on websites, and buy or sell goods and services.
The metaverse builds on the internet in the sense that it creates a virtual world that mimics the aspects of a normal, physical world. This is done using technologies like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), AI, social media, and digital currency. People use the internet to ‘browse’, whereas people can actually ‘live’ in the metaverse.
CALLING BUSINESSES
Meta’s entry into the metaverse did not start with its rebranding in 2021. It started in 2019, with the launch of Horizon Worlds, formerly known as Facebook Horizon. This led to a stupendous rise in the monthly user base of Horizon Worlds and Horizon Venues.
It was not too long before Silicon Valley business, Microsoft also jumped on the bandwagon. Governments are also planning a relatively static presence on the internet… for example, Barbados plans to set up a diplomatic embassy in the metaverse. The growth of the metaverse is slowly gaining momentum and several businesses are now opting to step foot into the future of the future.
India’s TATA Tea also went the Meta way earlier this year. The company hosted a full-fledged Holi celebration in the metaverse, where people could appear in any avatar and enjoy the festival of colours.
Businesses aside, celebrities aren’t shying away from taking the plunge. Paris Hilton has created a virtual island on Roblox known as Paris World, where fans can raid her wardrobe and purchase outfits.
The first-ever concert of the future was held on 20 October. Arab singers Ragheb Alama and Saad
Lamjarred performed in the metaverse, delivering a unique interactive experience in their futuristic avatars. The stars were present in the concert as avatars and also went live to answer fan questions.
The concept of the metaverse has also made its way into other areas like films, tourism, and sports. Here’s a low-down on how these businesses have incorporated metaverse.
METAVERSE IN FILMS
Over the past few years, Visual communication has witnessed a steady boom. This is because of the development in technology, which has now provided platforms where visual art can not only be viewed but also experienced. Long ago, filmmaking was a
strenuous process that involved a whole lot of people and high-end equipment. However, with iPhones and mirrorless cameras on the rise, the process of filmmaking no longer remains the same.
In a similar way in which inexpensive cameras and high-end phones made filmmaking easier, the metaverse can redefine the way films are made, distributed, and interacted with.
THE METAVERSED FILM INDUSTRY
Filmmaking involves four main categories- cast, crew, sets, and gear. Metaverse has the potential to erase all these categories. To begin with, using the metaverse, you can bring alive any location. This also means you don’t have to block multiple locations for the shoot. In the metaverse, any location you wish for can become a reality.
Secondly, the actors can be replaced with any form. Besides this, real actors can also be captured in real life and finally be placed within a 3D virtual environment.

Third, crew. You practically need one person to shoot the actual actor and a team of programmers for the post-production. This will also reduce largesized crews, which has been a norm for years now.
And lastly, you won’t need expensive gear to capture live action. All you need is ample lighting for the character and a green screen and viola, your character and set are ready to roll.
Well, while this may all sound easy, it might still involve a lot of money. Employing talented artists and making a one-of-a-kind film will also come with a cost, be it in reality or the metaverse.
METAVERSE IN TOURISM
At a time when the pandemic was at its peak, people turned to VR experiences. Travellers could go on a virtual vacation, from the comfort of their homes. In the case of virtual reality, virtual elements are overlaid the real world. The metaverse will act as a substitute for an in-person visit or can help prepare for an upcoming trip.
Travellers can plan holidays and decide where they would probably travel and spend their time and money, by using the metaverse for virtual tours of hotels,
places, and experiences.
Furthermore, the metaverse can also enhance the booking experience. Booking through a website comes with certain restrictions. But, booking in the metaverse might be more like visiting a hotel or a place, asking questions to agents, negotiating deals, and finally making payment more easily. Even after travellers reach their destination, they will be able to make alterations, order food, look up deals, etc via the metaverse.
The metaverse could pose a threat to the travel industry. If people were able to visit new places in a virtual 3D space, they might not choose to travel physically. But there’s still a long time to go, we believe, before the metaverse entirely takes over the travel space.
In an interview with the YouTube channel ‘The Babylon Bee’, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla said that he is not impressed by the Metaverse and is not seeing us disappearing into a hyper-virtual world anytime soon. “I don’t know if I necessarily buy into this Metaverse stuff, although people talk to me a lot about it,” he added.
METAVERSE IN SPORTS
Imagine stepping into a sports arena where you can create your own sports avatar, watch matches, train, buy sports equipment or participate in a game- this is what metaverse would mean for sports fans.
Metaverse would provide a much more immersive watching experience. For instance, participants in the Metaverse Sports Arena would be able to take pictures with sports stars, and chat with their favourite sports personalities, while enjoying a panoramic view of

the arena. They can also zoom into any part of the stadium, run alongside players, join the cheerleaders, or just enjoy the game with their friends, who might physically be miles away.
Once again, this might sound like a never-attainable vision, but the metaverse is one step closer than you might think. The Manchester City club recently announced that the Etihad Stadium will be virtually recreated in the Metaverse. This will permit football fans to watch live matches, without physically being present in stadiums. Experts reveal that metaverse is set to become the reality for sports fans and this may transform the sporting industry as we know it.
ADVANTAGES
● Negates Physical Distance
Metaverse brings together people from across the globe. Furthermore, the metaverse will also act as a platform for like-minded people, allowing you to make new friends, within the comfort of your home.
● Immersive Experience
Imagine 3D getting an upgrade! That’s the metaverse for you. Apart from providing an immersive experience in terms of tourism, sports, or filming, metaverse will also open up opportunities for personal and business ventures. You can play games, exercise, socialize, and even hold business meetings in a realistic setting with lifelike avatars.
●
Positive Impact On Cryptocurrencies
Cryptocurrency will play a major role in the metaverse, through blockchain technology providing transparency, trust, and security. NFTs are a token of ownership for digital and physical assets and the metaverse
will enable owners the privilege to move their assets between various worlds.
DISADVANTAGES
●
Privacy & Security Issues
Privacy has always been a big issue on the internet, as people are unaware of their data being collected. And considering Facebook’s history with privacy, this could be a major concern.
● Virtual Bullying
Bullying, cybercrimes, and cyber-attacks are inevitably some of the dark sides of the metaverse. This could lead to greater cyber-attacks, with little to no screen to look away from. However, there’s nothing much that can be done about it correctly, but as the metaverse develops it is hoped that newer and more innovative methods of addressing this issue will come into being.
●
Losing Connection With The Physical World
The virtual world is like an addiction. Once you’re in there, you can lose all track of time and even lose connection with the physical world. Think of our mobile phone addictions and imagine how it could be to have an immersion experience of another world.
While the basic framework of Metaverse has been around for years, a true metaverse world, where lifelike interactions will take place, is still years away. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in his ‘Year in review’ blog noted that most people don’t have the right VR goggles or motion capture gloves to accurately capture their body motion, voice, or expression. He, however, did predict that we aren’t very far from virtual meetings, where people will appear as digital avatars.
What the metaverse holds for our collective futures is still a big of a mystery. Twenty years ago, we hadn’t heard of Facebook or Instagram, but look at us today. Suddenly influencers are the thing to be… As our world continues to unfold in new and exciting ways and technology takes us into the future in giant leaps and bounds, one can’t help but remember the ancient Innuit curse, “May you live in interesting times.” ✪

MEN ON TOP
Why do we see more men in leadership positions around the world while compared to their female counterparts?
Have we looked at the data – Its astounding to note that even today, in this so called internet era and the diverse world we live in – women contribute to less than 20% of leadership positions across industries and sectors. Be it business, career or even the government sectors – we just see more men at the helm of things, and something has to be done to change this phenomenon, But before we attempt to make change – let’s take a moment to try and understand why things are the way they are.
Historically, the term patriarchy has been used to refer to autocratic rule by the male head of a family; however, since the late 20th century it has also been used to refer to social systems in which power is primarily held by adult men. Sadly, even as we have evolved to a more diverse way of life over the past two to three decades, that age old patriarchal mindset still seems to linger on. There are certain stereotypes that need to be broken - For example, there is a general stereotype that men tend to be more assertive and dominant, whereas women tend to be more communal, cooperative, and nurturing. As a result, men are more likely to participate and voice their opinions during group discussions and be perceived by others as leaderlike.
Our bias for male leaders runs deep, research shows. A recent study showed it is not because women lack the competitiveness or risk-taking instincts that men have. Rather it is due to a general bias against female leaders that assesses them less positively and rewards them less generously.
Having understood the history and context of the prevalent thought process and unconscious biases that
potentially exist, let’s explore what tangible actions can be taken to do something about the situation and how industries and sectors can be more purposeful about ensuring a more equitable distribution of genders at the leadership table.
Be truly inclusive in thought process and practice
Data suggests that the single largest reason for women to face a mid-career setback is motherhood and the potential gap in employment and job focus and commitment that this life event brings about is one of the primary reasons women are held back from managerial or leadership roles. Many corporate leaders are prejudiced against women in the workplace because they view a woman as a potential setback. This had to change by ensuring that policies and processes are crafted in a manner to accommodate this life event and that the only criterion of selection is capability. One way in which organizations are promoting diversity at the leadership levels is to ensure that policies and benefits are crafted to suit women in
A view on why men are still in the leadership lead across the globe and how to create a level playing field for all genders
the organization – whether it’s maternity leave, childcare support, caregiver support systems or career growth opportunities.
Invest in building and nurturing woman leaders
Women in leadership roles are at an all-time high. Still, stereotypes and challenges for female leaders continue to impact their growth and influence resulting in a leadership gap. As more female leaders aspire to up take high-ranking roles, there is the need to implement leadership programmes aimed at propelling successful women in business.
The skills acquired from these leadership programmes for women leaders enable them to be more successful. Let’s not forget that a key trait that women leaders have been noted to possess over their male counterparts is empathy – a competency that is ever so important and critical to a leader in today’s postCovid world. We have a fantastic opportunity to tap into the immense potential of women leaders – be it their capability for visionary thinking, problem-solving
skills and their overall confidence levels seasoned with that secret sauce of empathy.
Some other clear benefits of investing in women leadership programmes are:
Strengthen overall Leadership Skills: Leverage power, diagnose situations, and master successful negotiation tactics that prioritize professional growth goals.
Understand the Women’s Perspective in Business: Grapple with the impacts of gender on authority, business relationships, and effective leadership. Grasp and adopt the exceptional female perspective to overcome obstacles in personal life, company, and beyond.
Acquire New Business Acumen Tools to Cultivate Personal Fulfilment from Work: These interventions help discover tools to achieve work balance and reap greater rewards and personal satisfaction from your work.
Establish a Strong Professional Network: Learn tactics for building productive, supportive professional relationships, and business networks.
Develop Problem-Solving Skills: Act with power to address business challenges by developing problem-solving strategies for immediate application.
Start at home – Coach them young
There is a need to change the overall mindset of the ecosystem and society, as a whole. And we, as men, need to start thinking about the issues that affect our wives, daughters, mothers, sisters and female friends. I am a proud father of a 17-year-old daughter who has big dreams and wants to conquer the world. I made sure that during her formative years, she was constantly reminded that she is no less than boys and that she can do everything that her male friends could do. Try these tips to help foster leadership traits in your daughters:
* Remind her constantly that she is capable of anything. Even the sky isn’t the limit
* Encourage her to play with boys – They are equals
* Foster her independence. Give her the same independence (if not more) you would give your son
* Encourage her to play sports – especially those that have been male dominated (I encouraged my daughter to play football and hit the ball out of the park)
* Highlight female role models – this has an incredibly positive impact, these role models could be global, local or from your neighbourhood
* Last but not the least - Be a role model yourself Movember is perfect to commit to this! ✪

Fountainhead Of Design
prodigy RASHIQ MUHAMAD ALI is known for his unique experiential and thoughtful design style. Educated at AA London and guided by and worked with Zaha Hadid herself, this 43-year-old has achieved unprecedented success, and this is why…
WRITTEN BY MEGHA AGRAWAL / LOCATION: ME DUBAI / PHOTOS: ANTAS SINGHnce in a while some individuals are born with an instinct to convert innate talent into a passion and turn the passion into expertise. Through some miraculous cosmic alchemy, they are completely in sync emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually with their vocation which transcends their work to a calling. Rashiq Muhamad Ali, architect by choice, talent, and destiny is one of these rare individuals.
INFLUENCES AND INSPIRATIONS
Dressed in signature black, Rashiq exudes an enigmatic aura. His love for architectural design expresses itself throughout the conversation without him actually stating it out loud. “I am one of those people who has always known their mind,” he says. His desire to be an architect manifested at the age of four when his parents moved from India to Abu Dhabi at a pivotal time, when His Highness Sheikh Zayed was transforming Abu Dubai through urban planning. How a change in the built environment can change the fate of a nation
and its people was something that was subconsciously embedded into Rashiq’s psyche very early on.
TRAVELS AND TEACHINGS
Since then, all of Rashiq’s life choices consciously and subconsciously converged to make his ambition a reality. He took a year off before university to travel across India, studying the works of Indian titans, Charles Correa and BV Doshi. From small housing projects to national monuments, he visited the sites of these design pioneers.
Deeply inspired by Charles Correa’s design philosophy, Rashiq learned that architecture is not just about creating impressive facades. “A great architect is very thoughtful of how the interior space of a building is designed, caring about what life is going to be like within that building and defining the spaces, sections, and flow between them, elevating that space from an average functional staple to an enriching, wondrous and positive environment.”
FountainDesign
“I ALWAYS PUSH MYSELF AS AN EXPERIENTIAL ARCHITECT BECAUSE I LOVE THE POWER A SPACE CAN OFFER”
THE EARLY YEARS
Continuing his education, Rashiq decided to enroll in the Sushant School of Art and Architecture in New Delhi, falling in love with the campus and the school’s approach to architectural design. Not afraid to experiment, Rashiq focused on developing his unique sensibilities, design language, and aesthetics. In his first year, he was guided to the works of Zaha Hadid, the pioneering architect of modern times, with iconic designs like the London Aquatics Center, Heydar Aliyev Center in Azerbaijan, and Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi. Intensely curious, Rashiq decided to learn more about her and soon after decided that someday he was going to work with Zaha.
After college and a year-long stint with the Indian architect, Pradeep Sachdeva, Rashiq came to Dubai, wanting to understand the actual construction process as his designs got realized physically. Hired by HOK (Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum), he worked onsite at the Dubai Festival City Mall, interacting with the construction team, solving real-time problems, understanding the nuances of every design decision as work progressed. “I studied architecture in the university, but I became an architect on that site,” he recalls.
IMPACT OF SPACE
Rashiq explains the nature of space design and how it can affect our perception and well-being. “Not mere aesthetics, every element has a great impact on the user experience. The high ceiling of a cathedral immediately fills us with a sense of a divine presence. Similarly, hotel lobbies are designed to be large and open to impart a sense of grandeur. Big hotel chains, for example, even use ‘scent branding’ filling the atriums of their properties with a signature scent so that users start to associate that particular fragrance with the brand.”
Rashiq states that design decisions must be undertaken with
utmost care and accountability. All buildings are designed with durability in mind. People envision their dream homes and workspaces and plan to spend a lifetime inside it, hoping to pass it on to the next generation. An architect’s work impacts generations. “Long term studies have shown that children growing up in well-planned spaces are more composed and better decision-makers than children living in poorly-designed spaces,” he adds.
Similarly, he emphasizes the value of high-end facade designs and how they can help accelerate a community. Iconic landmarks can appreciate property value - like Burj Khalifa elevating Downtown, upping property values and serving as a benchmark for building quality all around.
AN EXPERIENTIAL ARCHITECT
Rashiq strives to design thoughtful, positive spaces in harmony with the location, interweaving natural elements like sunlight, windflow, textures that would provide a multi-sensory experience for the user. “I always push myself as an experiential architect because I love the power a space can offer.”
His style allows him to bring unique experiences and invigorate the senses. He remembers planting a mature orange tree in a courtyard of a villa. Opening the windows of the house invited a citrusy fragrance, tying the scent memory of citrus to ‘home-away-from-home’ for the owners.
Similarly, Rashiq’s design of Al Barari Project in Dubai, during his stint with 10 Design, is a prime example of bringing uniqueness and thoughtfulness to a residential development. The houses are flooded with natural light, without the harsh glare of the desert sun. Good ventilation keeps the temperatures down, prolonging the feeling of ‘outdoor comfort’. Views from the apartments frame the lush outdoor landscaping creating the feeling of a verdant oasis. Experiential architecture at its

best, Barari remains a great favourite with Dubai residents and imparts the experience of being in a forest in the middle of a desert.
SOMETHING NEW Rashiq always comes up with bespoke, innovative designs for his clients. Just like his guide Zaha Hadid, who could envision curves, and openness where others saw only rigid lines and tight spaces, he breaks known norms of architecture, melding traditional, holistic contemporary elements. His work is led by research at all phases and experiments through ‘Parametric Design Principles’a design approach historically adopted by the likes of Antonio Gaudi. Today, pioneer architects like Masimiliano Fuksas have used this method to design Shenzhen Baon International Airport. Using computer simulations by inputting parameters, it allows architects analyse their designs and predict patterns.
Delivering ground-breaking work in Europe, Middle East, India and China, Rashiq is not bound by typologies or geography. Capable of delivering designs that integrate the country’s culture and social fabric, he is one of the most versatile and change-adaptive architects of our time.
“In design, one must know the rules to break them.” Behind Rashiq’s norm breaking design language is a solid foundation
laid at the prestigious Architectural Association School of ArchitectsAA, London. Driven by a desire to work with industry frontrunners like Zaha Hadid and Patrick Schumacher, Rashiq got into this very exclusive and hard-to-crack school and experimented under the tutelage of Patrick Schumacher, who encouraged him to bring his experiments to Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) where he was promoted to Lead Architect in just two years. He continued his exceptional trajectory, gearing up to be at the eye of the incredible storm of the ‘China Boom’.
THE BEIJING AFFAIR
Post 2012 Olympics in Beijing, China saw a massive design resurgence, developing urban projects at supersonic speed. Rashiq moved to Beijing, working as Head Architect for ZHA Projects, China.
Designing the iconic landmarks, Wangjing SOHO and Galaxy SOHO gracing the Beijing skyline he garnered awards like the 2014 Emporis Skyscraper Award, Excellence Award by China Tall Buildings Awards, Zhan Tianyou Award for Engineering Excellence, RIBA International Award and 2014 CASC Awards for his team, putting him in the league of the finest architects we have today.
In a bold, unconventional, and experimental move, his team designed the landscape element before the actual building. The people around started using the park and by the time the building came up, the community felt that the project was an integral part of the neighbourhood.
There were other great moments in China. One such was the Chongqing project where the government wanted a unique landmark tower for their skyline. Initially awarded to another firm, their design lacked a seminal element. Rashiq and his team submitted a different design, so cognizant of client requirement that their proposal was swiftly approved and yet another seminal work from Rashiq’s drafting table made it to Chongqing skyline.
After six years with Zaha Hadid Architects, Rashiq moved to Hong Kong, working with another architecture giant - 10 Design. The next two years were fun-filled and tremendous learning experiences as he continued to deliver exceptional works like the Al Barari Project in Dubai.
THE SILK ROUTE
Then the urge to travel hit again. This time exploring rural China, Rashiq documented his travels on reel. He was as much a novelty for rural China as it was for him. He laughs as he reminisces, “Villagers would rub my brown skin to see if the colour would wash off.”
Travelling along the historical trade route, he visited cities like Kashgar and Urumqi. Categorizing travel as an essential
“IN DESIGN, ONE MUST KNOW THE RULES TO BREAK THEM”Wangjing SOHO, ZHA, Beijing The Circle, ZHA, Zurich Office interiors, ZHA, Abu Dhabi Sorbonne University, LL Creative Services, Abu Dhabi
part of a designer’s evolutionary journey, Rashiq encourages every designer to explore the world continuously from different perspectives. He says, “A lot of human learning is subconscious and all our experiences shape and enrich our thought processes. To be a great designer, read about everything, experience everything, know about everything, except design. Because if you are reading about design, you are reading about solutions without knowing what the problem is.”
THE INTERIORS WORLD
After this second hiatus, Rashiq moved back to Dubai joining an interior design firm. With his Midas touch, the firm was
soon delivering unique solutions, most remarkable being the University of Sharjah’s dining hall project. 10,000 square metres of space was elevated with a radical redefinition from a standard mess hall to a place allowing interactions and activities at multiple levels - digitized amphitheatre for presentations, formal bookable meeting spaces, workstations for students to continue working during their breaks, informal lounges and classroom spaces for faculty and students to interact. The job got him and his firm top nominations at the CID Awards in 2021.
THE CONTINUED EVOLUTION
Rashiq forayed into entrepreneurship in 2020. Eager to learn the business development and execution aspect of a creative business, he established RqMA - ‘Rashiq Muhamad Ali Architecture plus Design’. From inception, RqMA has worked on diverse iconic projects that will, no doubt, be future global benchmarks for architects. These include high-end luxury resorts in UAE and Africa, a 300-plus-metre tower on Sheikh Zayed Road, residential complexes in Dubai Islands and Jumeirah and more. RqMA’s interior designing vertical stays busy with mall refurbishments, top-of-the-line office designs, restaurants, TV studios, health clubs and so on.
Rashiq aims to make experiential architecture RqMA’s USP. He wants to, “Create spaces that make the clients so happy that they look forward to coming back home instead of hanging out with friends in clubs and restaurants!” Like the great Frank Lloyd Wright, he wants to get into product design as well, in order to design furniture and interior detailing. He wants to test limits of how far he can go into the design aspect within the building environment.
All this said, Rashiq is firmly grounded and recognizes the pitfalls of running a new business and reveals that he has a mentor. “It is good to learn from your mistakes, but it is even better to learn from someone else’s mistakes.”
FUTURE FLIGHTS
With 19 years of experience in high-end architecture, Rashiq wants to avoid being branded as a specialist in only one kind of design. “The problem with getting stereotyped is that, soon,
“A LOT OF HUMAN LEARNING IS SUBCONSCIOUS AND ALL OUR EXPERIENCES SHAPE AND ENRICH OUR THOUGHT PROCESSES. TO BE A GREAT DESIGNER, READ ABOUT EVERYTHING, EXPERIENCE EVERYTHING, KNOW ABOUT EVERYTHING, EXCEPT DESIGN”
you will be asked to create the same designs again and again.” Instead, he wants to work with clients who are looking for innovation and are open to rethinking staple designs from scratch. He wants to take up community-centred projects like schools - a place where children spend a good chunk of their formative years, and hospitals - a place of both great joys and tragedies. He recalls designing an entire shopping district in Baghdad called Baghdad Gate which was a fun project that helped accelerate a community. “Do you add more value to the people around that area? Or are you negating something already there?” is the question that dictates his quest for innovation. He notes that newer firms sometimes severely underbid to win contracts and then cut corners in design, materials, even engineering. “I wish to introduce a body to regularize the creative industry business rules that will work for the benefit, and create a win-win, for clients and designers.”
DUBAI AS HOME
Alongside his future, Rashiq is excited about Dubai’s future too. “A great multicultural centre, Dubai and Abu Dhabi have all the hallmarks of cities growing in the right direction. A land of superlatives, with the tallest, largest structures in the world, Dubai has matured from its early days and is now expanding in a more purposeful and community-centric way.”
He appreciates the sustainable initiatives in UAE and hopes to see greater government support for sustainable practices in the construction industry. The carbon footprint of a building is dependent on its materials and energy consumption. “If world governments incentivize sustainable material usage for contractors and developers, it will bring about sweeping change,” he remarks.
ADVICE AND MENTORSHIP
Always learning, Rashiq feels a sense of duty to pass on his extensive knowledge to the next generation and is currently mentoring four promising architects. “Architecture is an overwhelming field. People expect instant success. It’s crucial to realize that you need to go through the steps to achieve success. There are no shortcuts,” he says. He advises all young architects to gain work experience with an architectural firm before striking out on their own.
He also visits institutions around the world like Hong Kong University, Tsinghua University (Beijing), American University in Sharjah (AUS), Architectural Association Visiting School Program etc as guest lecturer and sometimes as a jury member.
Rashiq believes that architects need to have good problemsolving skills, be team players, as well have leadership qualities. “Real life problems will crop up as the physical development of a design starts. Putting a structure together is a very collaborative effort. The consultant (architect and engineering teams) and the contractor need to lead their teams and tackle problems that crop up to achieve the level of perfection expected from their work.”
“The times of the star architect are changing.” Architecture is becoming more collaborative as the complexities and scales of the projects are exponentially increasing. “You need to be more open and willing to listen to your experts. Trusting your engineers is essential. I trust my team completely and know that they can take on ambitious designs.”
A BROAD BAND
Multitalented Rashiq is also an excellent musician and photographer. A genuine tech lover, the metaverse and AI excite him as potential future tools for designers to research, predict, analyse patterns and showcase their designs. He is also the president of a BNI (Business Network International) chapter to help entrepreneurs network and leverage business expertise.
Rashiq has inspired his seven-year-old daughter to be an architect, as well. It is not a profession for the faint-hearted though. “True dedication is needed for the craft, and a healthy amount of ego is necessary, as well, to produce great work. The ego keeps us from quitting, pushes us to try harder and gives us the strength to defend our work.”
When asked what he wants to do when he retires, he smiles and says, “I want to design buildings.” Rashiq Mohammed Ali has only just begun, and like the fabled Howard Roarke in Ayn Rand’s noted book, The Fountainhead, we can only wait in anticipation to see, “the will of man, made visible.” ✪

Brandon Han believes that every crisis offers opportunity in disguise, allowing us to effectively plan and adapt. He comments on the impact of the pandemic - which led to a prevailing reluctance in the business world to invest, hire and expand. Significant fear led investors to strategize aggressive growth or to terminate business. While being cautious about exploring current nuances is vital, Brandon says that making safe and small steps ahead is equally important. He adds that the UAE market is intact, stable, and open to opportunities. Talking about novel concepts, he says, “Rather than just saying no to all new investment schemes, it is better to keep an open mind and try to accept the picture as is.” He states, for example, that even though crypto currency is labelled as a gamble by many, closing our eyes to this new financial phenomenon is unwise; it is important to take cognizance of the fact that leading international funds have invested in crypto.
SAGE ADVICE
When asked, what he would choose if he had to pick another profession, Brandon reveals his admiration for trading: he is currently working on an entrepreneurial venture in this field. He says that if there is one bit of advice he would give to his twenty-yearold self, it would be “Start trading early.” Spending one’s 20’s getting to know the benefit of shrewd investments is a step in the right direction; enough to get the ball rolling for a longer, wiser journey of financial management, feels Brandon. The tenor is different a couple of decades later. Has one’s plans achieved sustenance; is it still viable; should plans be aligned to nuances? These are the questions that 40-year-olds’ should ask themselves. Starting to review financial plans is of paramount importance as
well. And as the sixties roll around the circle of life is back to gaining knowledge about varied pension funds and retirement plans. Brandon’s sensible planning is simple, yet brilliant, and it is this facet of his functioning that sets him apart.
Talking more about accounting, Brandon discusses innovative accounting to be an underrated finance technique that adds value to the organized data feed. “It is not just numbers,” he says. “The focus of innovative accounting is analysis and interpretation of credit rating with the found numbers.” He has seen that predicting future prospects and analysing loopholes in the past that impacted the numbers can offer major advantages. He, most importantly, believes that customizing financial needs is ultimately about people, and not just about figures.
THE TRACK RECORD
Brandon Han and his firm are a well-known name in all the right circles. His firm delivers to a clientele that encompasses some of the best-known names in the market. Mashreq, First Abu Dhabi (FAB), Samsung, Hyundai, Kia Motors, Posco, Mitsubishi Corporation, China State Construction Engineering Corporation, are just some of the giants that have trusted him and the services of Confiance. He has advised and executed several project financing for landmark projects in the UAE such as the Ain Dubai - the Biggest Ferris wheel in the world. Brandon also drafted the finance plans for well-known multinational companies, and from inception, his work is one of acquisitioning excellence and reputation.
THE MAN
Brandon defines himself in one word - “Honest!” Telling the truth about the financial statements of a company, the credit values and the expected outcomes - is an integral part of being a people’s financial advisor. He shared that he was excited about the forthcoming corporate tax and the number of ways in which he could assist people with his advice, on this front, to best deliver solutions at a critical time, with integrity and transparency.
In a world, where financial systems are under constant scrutiny, Brandon Han stands as a visionary; setting standards in accounting excellence that make him the role model for others to emulate. In short, he cuts the perfect figure. ✪

The Road From Damascus
One of his books was shortlisted for The Book of The Year Award. Aspire caught up with the talented Syrian-American author, Omar Imady in an open and engaging conversation about his Middle-Eastern connections, his literary inspirations and the stories that formed him
Tell us a bit about your journey as a writer... what got you started and drove you to keep at it?
I was born in Syria to a mother from New York and a Damascene father. My parents met in a reading room at NYU in the 1950s. They fell in love instantly, were married within a few months, and when my father finished his PhD, together they boarded a boat and sailed across the Atlantic heading for Damascus. I remember hearing this story over and over as a child. With each retelling, it seemed to me more interesting details would be remembered and added. How fate had it, for example, that my father had seen my mother only a few days after watching Pandora and the Flying Dutchman . In his mind, my mother resembled Ava Gardner and, in fact, the first thing he said to her, in his heavily accented English, was “You are Ava, from Pandora.”
I remember lying in my bed trying to envision how it all took place. The scene I imagined could have been plucked right out of one of those classic movies Syrian TV would infrequently air. It was all black and white, just like the pictures my parents had from that time, just like the fuzzy images that I would watch on screen.
In a sense, I grew up with stories. This and countless others. Stories of my Damascene grandfather, Jawdat Effendi Imadyan, impoverished aristocrat from a long lineage of religious scholars amongst whom were several Grand Muftis of Damascus. My aunts would share tales of this upright, educated, stubborn, and intransigent grandfather who loved his strawberry-haired wife to the point of becoming intolerable whenever she was not around. On such occasions, my aunts would set out searching the houses of neighbours and friends for their mother and
plead with her to cut her visits short to come back and calm her husband,
The story of my grandparents’ marriage was equally captivating. My grandmother’s father, Adib Agha Hawasli, owned a coffee house just outside the walls of the Old City. My aunts would recount the tale to me as I sat, riveted, on the floor by their feet while they shelled broad beans and sipped sweet, dark tea. This coffee house was no ordinary establishment, having become infamous for the fact that one of its dancing girls had been bitten by a performing lion on the premises. Given his prominent family status, it would have been frowned upon for my grandfather to be seen in such a place. But he had heard much about Adib Agha’s daughter, and he simply could not resist the growing desire to ask for her hand.
Initially, writing was how I processed my past, how I made sense of the stories. But as I wrote, I quickly realised that writing is less about preservation and more about reimagining. Soon, I began to reimagine not just the past, but the present and the future. Give me a cup of sweet tea and I, like my aunts in our house in Damascus, can share stories for hours.
What is your creative process? What inspires a story, from where do your characters stem, how do
“As I wrote, I quickly realised that writing is less about preservation and more about reimagining. Give me a cup of sweet tea and I can share stories for hours”
you conceive of a book from start to finish?
Though this may sound somewhat clichéd, I often feel that I am no more than a medium for a story that insists on being written through me. My best stories, the stories I end up completing, are those that suddenly arrive. At first, they are very condensed. But as I begin typing, they unfold and expand. It is almost as though I am translating an intangible thought into a scene, into words. What I find most interesting is that I rarely know how a story will end until I complete it.
As a writer, what do you like to read in your down time? Who are the writing greats who inspired you?
There was a time when I read voraciously. My tastes were eclectic – Colin Wilson, Audre Lorde, Alberto Moravia, Anais Nin, Alessandro Baricco, Ibn Arabi, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Virginia Woolf, the words and lyrics of Bob Dylan. Fact and fiction were equally as appealing to me. I once read in the autobiography of Malcolm X that he had read the entire dictionary from cover to cover. Though I never read it from cover to cover, one of my most prized possessions was a full set of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, which I would spend hours perusing, trying to replicate something of his experience.
Since I have become a committed full-time
writer, I must confess, I now find it very difficult to read. Perhaps because, in the delicate stage of writing, the smallest things, a foreign voice, can play with the process and undermine the intricate task of translating words onto a page.
Your narratives are based on your MiddleEastern roots. But there isn’t that much creative fiction in English emerging from the region. What are your thoughts on this?
While for a long time, the literary world was lacking in representative narratives from across the globe, there are now many incredible voices emerging from the Middle-East. Women and men who have translated their vastly diverse experiences of lives in the region or as Middle-Easterners living abroad, either in English itself or in translation. Though, I would agree, there are still not enough. When I say that Her Hand Moves has been deeply influenced by my Syrian roots, it is true. The experience of refugees is a thread which runs through each of the stories within it. But the books I have written since diverge in their influences and reflect not just the Middle-Eastern strand of my identity, but the complexity of who I am and how I experience the world more broadly. I suspect there are many writers who are also doing the same.
Can you tell us a little about your forthcoming book, set to launch this month?
The Celeste Experiment is essentially an allegory. One that captures the dynamics of death, grief, anger, faith, and revelation. Though I feel alienated by the way in which most religious people articulate their faith, I also find it equally difficult to relate to the indifference expressed by those who have left or dismissed religion entirely towards the realm of the spiritual. To me, there is something that is being missed by both ends of this spectrum. The Celeste Experiment is an attempt to capture this.
Lastly, what is the one most important bit of advice you would like to give to aspiring authors?
Write your story as though you are certain no one else will ever read it. And then share it with the world. ✪

The Age of Cars
LIKE FINE WINE THESE ENGINEERING MARVELS SEEM TO GET BETTER, AND MORE EXPENSIVE WITH TIME. PYTHIA BARRETTO EXAMINES THE GLOBAL FASCINATION WITH CLASSIC CARS.
In 1886, Karl Benz put in an application to patent his ‘vehicle powered by a gas engine’. And the world was never the same!
Although people did travel before the invention of the car, it was never too far from where they lived. It certainly wasn’t with ease, or with speed. The invention of the car changed all that – slowly, but surely, encouraging and enabling more autonomy and freedom of movement.
With almost 1.5 billion cars on our roads today, it’s easy to see that the car has moved in status from being an item of luxury to one of necessity. Interestingly, most of these cars are in Asia, then in Europe, followed by North America. The ability for mass production, for the cars to reach the ‘common man’ was established by Henry Ford when he introduced the moving assembly line. Henry Ford who famously offered the masses the choice of hue in his mass-produced vehicles saying, “Any colour you like as long as long as it’s black.”
From 1886 to 2022 the car has undergone several iterations. But strangely, despite the newer, better and more luxurious cars available today,
there is a great desire (almost bordering on a craze) for ‘classic’ cars.
OLD? VINTAGE? ANTIQUE? While all old cars are not necessarily classic, the term ‘classic’ encompasses all vintage, antique and collector models. It could include
cars as recent as 10 years old, moving up to over 50 years. The points of reference to define ‘classic’ are also many.
In this article, we’re essentially talking about ‘desirable’ classic cars. The ones that people are actively looking to own and to consequently be the subject of envy. The ones that people are willing to open their wallets for. And open them wide.
BUT WHY?
Again… buying classic cars stems from different motivations ranging from a deep love of cars to making a shrewd and sound investment. Yes! People truly do strange things for love! And some classic cars can actually provide better long-term returns than real-estate or art!
Caring for and maintaining, sometimes even restoring these beautifully designed and produced vehicles can cost a pretty penny. But it’s obviously not off-putting to those buying these cars off the market.
If you’re curious about how much a classic car would actually cost, a classic 1965 Mustang would set you back about USD 20,000. There are quite a few other cars that would be considered ‘collector cars’ in the USD 20,000 to 30,000 price range. Not bad you think? Well, you’re going to want to hold your breath for this one!
Ferrari 250 GTO is by far the most expensive classic car to be sold. At a whopping GBP 52 million!!! (approximately USD 60 million! at today’s conversion rate).
TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY?
If you’re a car aficionado and all this car-talk has got your blood racing, here are a few things to consider if you want to make an investment.
Like every investment market, the car market is constantly shape-shifting. But currently, the

If all you’re looking for is a to buy a classic, sit on it for a couple of years, and then sell it at a profit, you might want to re-think that idea! While you may be better off enjoying its beauty and performance, it’s going to need time, care and investment even if all you want to do is store it.
Like all other vehicles, classics work better when they are driven – carefully, of course! But if you’re going to store it, make sure you have expert advice on how to do it and what happens when you do decide to sell.

While there is plenty of advice available right from publications to clubs , the pricing of classic cars still follows the supply-demand principle of the market! The desirability of a car often drives how much a vendor can charge for it. Make sure you do your research before you write that cheque!
A good resource for keeping up with the classic cars market is the K500 Index. It is a wealth of information on classic cars, and has been compiled through verifiable and quantified auction sale results.
WHAT’S THE FUSS ABOUT?
A few years ago, a classic car collector was envisioned as an older, wealthier person, looking to build his personal collection of cars. But the last few years, there has seen a change in demographics of car enthusiasts. The average age is considerably lower, with a younger crowd now wanting to invest in classic cars.
This efficient, off-road vehicle is desired for its 4-wheel drive system and lightness coupled with the power and stability it offers.
The Covid-19 pandemic is thought to have also impacted the classic car market. It brought with it a microchip shortage worldwide, which pushed up the demand for older cars. The popularity of online auctions of classic cars is another reason they can be bought more easily. An increase in disposable incomes following the Covid-19 restrictions and worldwide lockdowns is also helping boost sales of these classic beauties.
As with most else, the availability of classic cars is growing in the digital space. A few reliable and well used auction sites for classic cars are:

Business Sans Borders
A look at how to compete on an international circuit in uncertain times
The Covid pandemic and increasing turmoil in geopolitical situations across some continents has prompted radical changes in global procurement and trade restrictions and calls from many actors to bring in new measures to cut dependency on imports. We are questioning the established global models that we have relied on for decades - many industries face raw material shortages, supply disruptions, lengthening delivery times, complex logistical problems, highlighting weaknesses in the global networked production processes.
Governments are reviewing trading relationships with a new emphasis on security issues, to enhance overall economic sovereignty.
And so, for many countries there is a renewed commitment to harmonise trade, competition, and industrial policy to limit dependencies. At the same time, responsible policy makers seek to guarantee fair and equitable trade and aim to raise the bar for international standards and norms that target environmental and social improvements.
And of course, international trade itself has also radically changed its model - “internationalisation” previously could be defined as simply moving products and goods across borders and selling services into new markets. Today we embrace a new approach; rapid economic integration driven by digital exchanges, innovation, and technology essentially, which is also the globalisation of knowledge and novel ideas.
The entrepreneur angle
Internationalisation is a time-consuming, complex process that requires considerable capital to initiate, as well as expand post-entry, in established and new markets. Internationalisation can also be a critical factor for the sustainability of some companies. Yet for a small business this can be difficult without access to the appropriate competencies and infrastructures.
Born global
Certainly, some companies working in high-tech environments and fast-moving innovative markets can be “born global”. In my experience these start-ups often have founders who already have some international experience and it is not their first start-up. So, thanks to their previous experience and extensive networks they are able, from the outset, to tap into several interesting markets; these markets are usually eager to embrace highly innovative products and services. However, most companies bringing novel products and services to markets offer incremental innovation - meaning that they are adding value to the current offering and bring additional benefits to customers. In my view most companies are better developing their international markets after they are reasonably well-established locally, regionally, and nationally.
Many products and services are improved during the initial launch and it is a lot easier to get customer feedback from local clients who you are close to, not only geographically, but culturally.
Consider the case of Swingers crazy golf. Launched in 2014 as a pop-up in a leaky warehouse in London’s Shoreditch, when founders Matt Grech-Smith and Jeremy Simmonds wanted to test out whether a venue that combined crazy golf with cocktails and street food could be a success.
The first permanent Swingers location opened in the City of London in May 2016 and was a hit. They took this winning formula across the Atlantic and opened their first US site in Washington DC in June 2021 and then opened in Manhattan, New York City in June 2022. The locations in America produced combined sales of $24 million this year, in addition to the £18 million generated by the two UK venues.
Buyers (and consumers) tend to more comfortable and interested to try new products if they are already
successful elsewhere and if a brand has proven experience.
Who can help
Availability help very much depends on the sector and type of products and services the company is offering but for most start-ups the key elements are probably resources, networks, expertise, concepts, and logistics/operations.
Business Incubators and Business Innovation Centres help young companies go international as Incubator managers and their staff coach founders and guide them on market selection, timing, inception and speed of internationalisation and mode of entry. Networks that incubators offer to start-ups are vital to help them enter new international markets. The goal is to learn new skills, gather new knowledge and to follow rapid technological changes.
In Europe start-ups and companies are fortunate because business support organisations can often introduce them to European-funded projects and other initiatives that offer internationalisation support free of charge.
For example, the European Union (Horizon 2020 programme), ENRICH project is designed to bring together core stakeholders from both regions, in order to support and strengthen the European and African innovation ecosystem. (https://enrich-in-africa-project. eu). Connected with front-runner innovation markets, soft-landing services facilitate the internationalisation of African and European innovation. And via connections to sister projects, companies can access services to
explore new local markets in Africa, China, EU, Latin America, and the US.
Soft-landing services include…
* Fast track connections
* Immersion into local ecosystems
* Meetings with potential clients, partners and investors
* Training and coaching
* Legal & Administrative support
In some cases, financial support is available to companies to travel and attend international fares and trade shows Useful for companies who can present their services and products to new markets and get useful feedback from potential buyers at a fraction of the normal cost.
The power of networks
Networks help entrepreneurs gain access to resources, improve their international strategic positions, and coordinate export sales effectively. New international markets can generate opportunities to acquire knowledge, learn new skills and follow the latest trends and technological developments. Successful internationalisation can offer long-term sustainable possibilities for companies and is, therefore, holds much potential for all entrepreneurs. The smart entrepreneur develops international business by exploiting networks to a maximum; connecting to the right people at the right time with the right offer.

The Big Picture (II)
In Part 1 of this two-part article, we looked at the revenue side of the Business Model Canvas (BMC).
In this article we will focus on the cost side - usually much easier to estimate but equally important in ensuring your business model is profitable. Costs cover the money required to develop the product or service that delivers the value proposition, and that which pays for the customer relationships required, and the communications channels used.
In order to assess the costs, your business needs to consider what activities you can, and more importantly, should do yourself, and those which you can outsource to a partner organisation. Understanding what your core value-add is in your business will help you focus on that aspect, making it the best it can be, and leave peripheral activities to third parties.
In part one we used a small catering company as an example to show how the BMC revenue side could be developed. We will use the same example for the cost structure.
The first area to consider is your Key Resources. Which resources do you have (human, physical, financial) that underpin your business model? Which assets do you have that are essential to your business? For our catering company the key resources will be the kitchen staff, the recipes and dishes created and delivered, and the location of the shop / restaurant. For outside catering, having your own salesperson who knows your business inside out would be key.
Under Key Activities, you need to consider what activities you need to perform well in order for your business model to be profitable, and identify which ones are critical to your success. For a catering business, the high quality of food would be the number one priority, closely followed by customer service - waiting staff, shop assistants, salesperson etc. The ambiance created within the restaurant would be a key activity to consider too. Do you want cosy, romantic, modern, family-oriented? For outside catering, providing the full ‘soup to nuts’ service including the tables, tableware, serving dishes (for buffet), branded serviettes etc would be important.
For the activities you need to do that are not part of your core business, you need to identify a strong set of Key Partners. Partners could be individuals you rely on for specific services (for example, your accountant) or companies that deliver a range of services (for example, a marketing agency). Partners should have your peripheral activities as their core business, so that they focus on providing you the best service that they can. You should seek out the best partners, ideally getting references from people you trust.
Unless it is trying to focus on field-to-place catering,
our catering business will not grow its own ingredients. It will find these products in the market - possibly quite literally. In many big cities specialist markets exist for meat, fish, and fruit and vegetables. Chefs will often visit these markets very early to buy the best
This revolutionary way of looking at your business has become the preferred methodology used by investors and entrepreneurs alike to assess financial potential. Part Two examines where your costs lie.
In order to assess the costs, your business needs to consider what activities you can, and more importantly, should do yourself, and those which you can outsource to a partner organisation
cuts, the freshest fish and ripest fruit. Relationships will grow between the chef and the supplier so over time suppliers know what the chefs want, and make sure the products are in supply. This partnership will guarantee the quality of the food ultimately provided to customers.
A small catering company won’t have its own marketing department, but it still needs branding, marketing services, social media, shop signage, menus etc. The design and supply of such services could be handled by the owner, but by investing a small amount with a local marketing agency, a much better result can be delivered. For the outside catering business, getting good customer testimonials and using them on a simple website is valuable. Using social media to promote special events at the restaurant and keeping regular customers informed is a job that needs focus. An external partner, working just a few hours a week, can keep social media alive.
As you can see there are a lot of aspects that need to be put into the Cost Structure in order to see what it takes to run your business. Costing your key resources, key activities and key partnerships should be fairly easy. You should work out the costs against each Customer Segment (see Part 1) where you can so that, when you combine with the revenue, you can see which areas of the business are more profitable. Indeed, you may find some customer segments are making all the profit and
others are actually loss making. You still may decide to keep the loss-making units as they provide brand awareness or increase the perceived value of the company as a whole.
Hopefully, you will have seen from the two articles the benefits of analysing your business using the Business Model Canvas. It allows you to break down the important aspects of the model into easily manageable parts, and then combine them again to get a full overview of the profitability of your company.
And, as you will see from the quote below, none of this is new: “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds nought and six, result misery.” Mr Micawber (From David Copperfield by Charles Dickens - 1850). ✪

A CAPITAL MINDSET
Everyday I come across entrepreneurs and startups that have the misconception that their idea, project, product, service, and technology is worthy of investment capital. Ego kills. When I hear pitches and listen to entrepreneurs speak, that enthusiasm must be channeled in a proper and strategic way. You also have to understand investors have been pitched to, heard, and seen every brilliant idea. What is going to differentiate and appeal to the investor is your mindset, energy, and attitude. Ultimately an investor is investing in you first. Unfortunately, when a founder or entrepreneur is so invested emotionally, he/she is blind and unaware of all the risks and opportunities ahead. As a result, the entrepreneur immediately exposes their personal weakness and investors will tune out - next.
Points that count
Therefore, Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is a critical element in raising capital for the entrepreneur, as well as the investor. Starting a business or raising capital is a very emotional process for an entrepreneur. They financially invested, but I have seen an entrepreneur’s emotional investment is often far greater. Their fate and success is in the investor’s hands. Since the investor is the source of capital, they can either empower or disable the entrepreneur in a heartbeat.
How can we flip the script here and remedy this? Accelerators and startup incubators are so obsessed with business, financial, KPI models that they forget about the mental well-being of the people who are actually going to execute the business plans. Let’s not forget that studies have shown that EQ is far more important than IQ for an entrepreneur’s success according to Professor Jared Allen’s study at Texas Tech University.
The big five
Here are five critical components in Emotional Intelligence for Raising Capital:
1 Self Awareness: It’s important for an entrepreneur to have a presence and engaged to exude confidence to the investor they are interacting with to have a greater impact and to be inspirational. Additionally, self awareness will exhibit their excitement and motivation around their cause.
2 Self Regulation: Investor’s will probe, question, discount, challenge, and offer critical feedback after a pitch. It’s vital to stay composed, focused, and control your emotions under these moments. Being well-prepared for all types of questioning is always a huge plus.
3 Motivation: Coming off optimistic and positive is important, but we must not forget that its most important to do this in an authentic manner. Otherwise, investors can see right through the artificial facade.
4 Empathy: The best pitches and investments I have seen are the ones
Learning to think the right way is key when it comes to raising funds to further your business. Here’s how to get your mind in gear for investment
Since the investor is the source of capital, they can either empower or disable the entrepreneur in a heartbeat
that have devised their business plan with the investor in mind, meaning they are addressing all of the investor concerns. That is why I always think its important to have a detailed risk mitigation slide during your pitch. It shows your investor that you are evaluating the potential risks and have controls in place to manage them.
5 Social Skills: It’s so vital to build a connection and rapport between yourself and investors, I cannot emphasize this enough. I see so many young startups who lack the fundamental social skills to have a basic conversation. More importantly, you must be able to communicate and represent information accurately in a professional manner.

As destination bachelor getaways become the norm, Pythia Barretto offers up a selection of easy-to-access places that offer a lot of everything for those looking for the perfect place for this rite of passage in a man's life
A ‘bachelor bash’ in the US, ‘stag-do’ in the UK, Ireland and Canada, a ‘buck’s party’ in Australia and with French flair enterrement de vie de garçon (translating to: ‘the burial of the life as a boy’). Different terms, but all describing one last party as an unmarried man.
Bachelor parties of the recent past have brought up imagery of cigars, strip clubs and endless bouts of drinking. It has been portrayed as one last free pass where everything goes! While we know that marriage isn’t necessarily the end of individuality and fun, celebrating singlehood has become a rite of passage. Very few weddings, especially in the Western world don’t have a bachelor party as part of pre-wedding festivities. This reason-to-party is gaining significant importance in the East too.
The more popular, publicised parties would have us believe that this pre-wedding celebration is an invention of the modern world. However, it was in ancient Sparta (of ‘300’ fame) that the earliest pre-wedding custom was recorded and recognised. That was in about 5 BC! While their practices and rituals may vary from those of today, the sentiment remains the same – a toast to a close friend before a major life event!
Through the ages, bachelor parties have been organized and conducted differently – with the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century influencing those we know today. These have been fun nights in pubs with co-workers and friends, black-tie events hosted by the groom-to-be’s father and weekends of ‘no-limits’.
However, more recently, there has been a big change in what happens at a bachelor
Abash. People marrying when they are older, and more financially well-settled, increased travel options and more activities to choose from are some factors that influence how bachelor parties are planned today.
Men today may choose weekends of heavy drinking in favour of a trip to the mountains. Similarly, strip-club surfing is being replaced by renting a yacht for a weekend of fishing and sailing.
Move over Las Vegas! Another practice that is becoming popular is a trip to an offsite location. In this regard, here are a few
places that we recommend if you’re planning a bachelor bash for your best mate. There’s plenty here to see and do while still focussing on strengthening the bonds of friendship that you’ve probably had for years. What’s better? You won’t have to break the bank while making this trip!
If your idea of a bachelor party doesn’t involve clanging slot machines, scantily dressed women, and bright lights, read on…
Sri Lanka
This probably isn’t the first place you’d think of when planning a bachelor party, but it’s a really fun place to visit! Known as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ this tiny country in the Arabian Sea is an unconventional destination, and exactly the reason why you should plan your trip here!
The visa process is online, quick and cost-effective. Plus, there are several flight options into Colombo from the UAE. So, you can plan and travel with ease.
When you get there, you can choose to remain in the capital city – Colombo. Or travel to other parts of this small, but diverse country! For its size, Sri

Lanka is sure to surprise and delight you with fun options!
If adventure is what you seek, you’re in the right place. Sri Lanka is a great place to surf and spots can be found on both east and west coasts. There are plenty of other adventurous water sports to keep you occupied and entertained. Snorkelling and scuba diving are other options.

Yala National Park, Uda Walawe National Park and Minneriya National Park are great options – you’re sure to spot some magnificent beasts in the natural habitat. Especially, the wild elephant that Sri Lanka is known for.
There are also several jungle trekking options. While day treks are quite popular and you’ll have plenty of easily available options to choose from, if you want something more challenging try a trek to Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock or the Lakegala Mountain. Some of these are quite physically demanding and you’ll be best served with a local guide to help.
For all the foodies in the house, Sri Lanka does not disappoint! A word of caution – Sri Lankan food is spicy! But be sure to check out the varied
cuisine. Different places in Sri Lanka have dishes that you wouldn’t find in other places. So if you’re visiting more than one place, make the best of that opportunity to sample different foods. And if your mates are also food enthusiasts, you could do a street food tour or book yourselves in for a cooking class or two!
You could still choose to go conventional and head to Colombo. This capital city is a party destination with a vibrant nightlife that includes restaurants, bars, casinos and pubs!
With all that activity your group is sure to need options to pamper, soothe and relax you. So check out the various options for men’s ayurvedic spa packages. Make sure to book yourselves into one before you head back home.

‘MEN’OPAUSE!
There’s is a lot of attention on menopause and it’s far-reaching effects on women, but a similar condition affects men. And it needs as much attention as Najmus Sahar discovers.
Menopause, alternatively known as andropause (late-onset hypogonadism or androgen decline as well), is a stage in a man’s life marked by a decrease in testosterone levels. In some men, these changes may be subtle and manifest themselves over time, from as early as the age of 40 up to the age of 70.
What Is It Really?
The male hormone - testosterone - is the male sex hormone produced in the testicles, and is responsible for a man’s physical and emotional well-being. Dr Céline Guyomar, a Livi medical doctor, says that testosterone is responsible for producing sperm and red blood cells. It also stimulates sex drive, maintains muscle and bone strength, and regulates body fat distribution.’
Signs And Symptoms Of Male Menopause
Unlike women’s menopause, where females experience a complete halt in their hormone production, testosterone depletion is a slow and gradual process. Since not all men experience the same symptoms, there is still a debate on whether male menopause is a medical condition or not. The reduction in testosterone levels can also be attributed to stress levels, lifestyle, and food choices. For some, the
symptoms may be mild, while for others, it may be quite evident, inevitably affecting their quality of life.
After the age of 30, the production of testosterone starts decreasing by 1-2% every year. Hence, the typical symptoms that are associated with lowered levels include:
* Depression
* Hair loss (body and pubic region)
* Decreased sexual drive/low libido
* Erectile dysfunction or impaired sexual performance
* Low energy levels
* Increased body fat
* Demotivation and difficulty concentrating
* Decrease in spontaneous erections especially in the morning
* Tender or swollen breasts
* Enlarged prostrate
* Shrinking testes
* Loss of muscle mass or weakness
* Excessive sweating or hot flashes
* Insomnia and/or sleep apnea
According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, the most common symptoms of male menopause include low libido, erectile dysfunction, and poor morning erection.
Cause For Concerned?
Male menopause can justifiably be called a combination of mental, emotional, and physiological symptoms that can affect the overall quality of life.
Dr. Chandrika Kulkarni, Consultant Obstetrician Gynecologist and fertility specialist; Cloudnine Group of Hospitals says “testosterone decline in men is a slower process. The testes, unlike the ovaries, do not run out of the substance it needs to make testosterone.” (Source: Tribune India)
Reduced testosterone levels can be a major cause of bone damage and speed up hair loss and cause weight gain. Low testosterone levels may also be known to be associated with mood fluctuations, depressive episodes, irritability, and reduced concentration.
However, one should keep in mind that male menopause is a multi-faceted phase where testosterone levels can be affected by factors such as substance abuse or illnesses.
What Can Be Done?
Diagnosis can be a cumbersome process, as not all men are comfortable discussing the symptoms they are going through. However, it is prudent to come to terms with it and talk about it openly, at the outset.
Test Yourself
A simple blood test is all it takes. Testosterone levels are the highest in the morning, so healthcare physicians recommend getting the test done then. The results can be reconfirmed by repeating the tests 2-3 times later in the day. A normal range of testosterone levels lies in the range of 300-1200 ng\dL. Your doctor may also suggest carrying out other tests such as DHEA, prolactin, luteinizing hormone, and estradiol to carry out a comparative analysis of how each hormone compares to the other. Men may even have to undergo a physical examination to confirm their symptoms.
Solution
Testosterone levels can be treated via both invasive and non-invasive methods. The treatment options below depends entirely on the cause of the hormonal imbalance and the symptoms that follow suit.
HORMONE THERAPY This includes the Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT), patches, injections or topical gels.
LIFESTYLE CHANGES Tweak your lifestyle to include fresh water, air, sunshine, sleep, and exercise…
EAT A HEALTHY DIET Testosterone levels get a boost from zinc, Vitamin D, branch amino acids. Olive oil, which contains monosaturated fatty acids, is a wise choice while cooking food. Vitamin D and zinc-rich foods to include in your diet include salmon, spinach, eggs, nuts, beans, pumpkin and flaxseeds, figs, and cruciferous vegetables.
MAINTAIN AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE Regular exercise boosts mood and muscle. A tudy, resistance and strength training boost testosterone levels.
CATCH YOUR Zzzs According to research, getting sleep for as low as 5 hours every day for a week decreased testosterone levels by 15%.
AVOID THE DEVIL’S DRINK
Excessive consumption of alcohol can greatly hamper the healthy functioning of the endocrine glands or the pituitary gland, both linked to testerone production.
COPING MECHANISM Take emotional and moral support from friends, family and support groups and mental health professionals.
In The End
Menopause is not something that just women suffer. Men should be equally aware and responsible for their internal health and listen to the cues that their bodies give them. It is vital to embark on a self-care journey and not let the aging process overwhelm you. It is equally important to recognise the problem and deal with it in a self compassionate and holistic way to ensure the easiest transition as possible in and out of this challenging time on a man’s life. ✪

HAIR TO STAY
THE PAST RETICENCE FOR MEN TO GROW BEARDS HAS FADED. BEARDS ARE NOW TRENDY, SMART, MASCULINE AND AN INDICATOR OF GOOD GENES. MEGHA AGRAWAL FINDS OUT MORE
WWhat do Jason Momoa, Drake, Virat Kohli and David Beckham have in common besides being rich, famous, successful and handsome? They all sport beards! The popularity of beards has come and gone through the centuries, but it has never completely disappeared. Now, beards are all the rage again and this trend is here to stay. With a plethora of products and tools at the customers’ disposal, the twenty-first century is actually a good time to grow a beard. Considered to be a universal symbol of masculinity and virility, beards lend a mature and dominant air. Beards are particularly popular in the Middle East and Indian subcontinent because of religious and cultural influences. Let's take a look at its history.
An intriguing history Ancient Mesopotamian men devoted a lot of time and care to grooming their beards by oiling, curling, and bejewelling them. Egyptians considered beards a
sign of nobility and women and men of the royal family wore a bejewelled gold accessory on their chin called a ‘Postiche’ or false beard.
Confusians from ancient China considered unshorn hair to be a gift from God, thus terracotta armies found in Chinese tombs all have beards. Persian kings grew their beards long and dense. In ancient India, beards were considered a symbol of wisdom, spirituality, and dignity. Infact, ancient Indians, Spartans, Saxons punished deserters and cowards by shaving their beards off.
Lombardians are so named because they are the people of ‘long beards’.
Pre-Islamic Arabia had the culture of keeping short beards and thick moustaches. Prophet Mohammed maintained a beard and advised his followers to do the same, but to remove the moustaches in order to differ from non-believers. With the spread of Islam, the trend for beards also
gained popularity. Signifying social status as well, beards have been an integral cultural part of this portion of the world.
Medieval Knights in England wore custom armour to display their moustaches and touching someone's beard was offensive and grounds for a duel! In the 17th Century, the Russian Czar Peter the Great ordered men to be clean shaven and introduced a ‘Beard Tax’. This caused beards to became unpopular in Europe and America - a dislike for paying taxes is clearly not a new aversion. In fact, the first bearded US President was none other than the legendary Abraham Lincoln. Later, the Crimean war and French revolution tied beards with the idea of courage and the fashion came roaring back. The 19th century again saw a decline in the world beard trend because of hygiene concerns and the American glorification of the clean shaven, good boy image.
Civilian prohibitions also kept this trend in check in the past. Airline pilots, firefighters are required in many countries to be clean shaven to be able to seal respiratory masks properly. Corporate culture across the world, civil services in western governments have frowned upon beards. But a lot has changed in the past decade as celebrities and influencers have affected the mass perception of facial hair. Pogonotrophy (The act of cultivating, or growing and grooming, a moustache, beard, sideburns, or other facial hair) is now popular again.
The Re-emergence
While the Middle East always had the culture of keeping beards, the global trend has affected the overall aesthetic. Social media has made body imaging more important than ever. While female ideals stress upon a slim yet curvy form and elevate feminine attributes, male ideals tend towards athleticism and a well-sculpted body and face depicting masculinity and strength. Beards go with this look as they shape the face and create a stronger jawline.
Another reason for the comeback is authenticity. Previous fashion trends encouraged a ‘what is not there’ approach - like altered skin and hair colours with fake tans and bleached hair. Current fashion wave glorifies the opposite ‘what is there’ policy - natural hair colour with highlights, natural complexions and a bit of contrived scruffiness with coiffed beards.
CURRENT TRENDS
WITH THIS IN MIND, LET'S FIND OUT WHICH ARE THE POPULAR BEARD STYLES RIGHT NOW:
Arabic Style Thick Angular with a Goatee
Very popular across UAE, Gulf and Indian Subcontinent - this style is sported by the likes of the Crown Prince of Dubai - His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Makhtoum. A closecropped beard with sharp angles to emphasize the jaw, it has a goatee under the lower lip and a closed cropped moustache that joins to the beard around the chin. The rule of thumb with a close-cropped beard is that the scruff length should not hide the Adam’s apple.
The Five o’clock Shadow or Stubble
Ever popular, classy, a barely there, shortest possible beard rocked by celebrities like David Beckham.
The Corporate
Well groomed, evenly trimmed (and not scruffy), each hair measuring 2 to 3 inches. Barber precision is required for maintenance.
Full Short (Boxed or Rounded)
This is like a close-cropped beard but with slightly longer scruff. It covers the entire jawline and merges with the sideburns. Great for accommodating bushier moustaches, this beard can be shaped into a square or a simple round edge for variations.
Beard for a Cause
Like hairstyles, beards need to be styled judiciously - to elongate the face and flatter the jawline. They can also be grown for raising awareness about public issues. One of the most famous being the ‘Movember’ movement (#Movember, #Movember2022). Men grow out their beards for the entire month of November to raise awareness about men’s health issues like prostate cancer. Since its conception in 2003, this movement has gained strength. Another notable movement was the #CoronaBeard, started as a hobby during the COVID lockdown, but grew to provide solidarity and indicate that people were not alone during this scary period.
Coiffure and Care
The Full Medium
Fully hugging the jaw with a growth of 4 to 5 months. This beard does not require a lot of precision, but it requires good genetics to pull off. Like Jason Momoa and Antonio Banderas.
While for charity or style, how does one go about cultivating a glorious beard? For beginners, it's best to seek out professional help. The beard era is making barbers across the world weep with joy, bringing more business and clients ready to shell money on grooming expensive beards, and moustaches. Shaving giant Gillete has tried to capture this new market by launching a complete beard care kit - balms, oils, washes, and razors to shape and style. But it is only one name in a growing sea of brands for beard grooming and consumers are spoiled for choice. The impact of social media on this style feature is stunning. 10 years back, the word beard evoked images of hippies, addicts, nomadic ascetics and wisemen who live outside the norms of society. Today, it's a desirable and powerful fashion statement. The tide of beard fashion is on the rise right now. And it looks like it is 'hair to stay' for a while. ✪

MAN ON THE RUN Shantaram
by Gregory David RobertsREAD it EAT it
If you haven’t already read it, we recommend Movember as the month to lose yourself in this fast-paced account of a man whose life was the ultimate adventure. From the prisons of Australia to the rat-infested slums of Mumbai, India, Shantaram is the gripping account of the life of a felon who escaped a long jail term, Down Under, and ended up as part of the underworld in the Indian city known for its film industry, mega wealth, slums and fast-paced life. Lovingly bestowed the name ‘Shantaram’ by a friend’s mother, which means a man of peace, the incredible life led by the protagonist is anything but peaceful. The book is a gripping narrative of life on a knife’s edge, with the whole shebang thrown in - underworld intrigue, unusually friendships, cultural learning and a look at life as few would dare to even dream of. This is a book about a man whose life took the most thrilling twists and turns, and unsurprisingly made its way into film. We recommend reading the book first, though. Written in beautiful prose, there is an elegance and simplicity to the language that makes the stark reality of the story even more impactful. It is a large tome, however, enough to keep you occupied, page-upon-page, for quite a while.
Available at all major bookstores and online retailers.

In Praise of Men
No one can argue that I am, and have been from a very young age, a card-carrying feminist. I have staunchly defended women’s rights to the point of blind fervour, very often to my own personal detriment. But I have always maintained that despite my intense belief in the cause of women, my greatest heartaches have come from women, rarely from men. On the contrary it is men, who over the course of my five decades, who have lifted me up the most.
They came in many shapes and forms. The school teacher who recognised talent and encouraged me. A partner who let me explore my life as I saw fit, an elder gentleman who treated me like a thinking, rational human, the boss who listened to me thoughtfully and treated me fairly, without bias. It was a man who encouraged me to become a writer, a man who taught me to play the guitar, a man who taught me to roller skate and a man held my hand as I recovered from surgery. It was a man who listened gently when I cried over the betrayal from a female friend. It was a man who introduced me to science fiction and turned me into a science junkie. It was a man who showed me how to live gently and without judgement.
For every man that has assaulted me, crushed me, attempted to dominate me, or run me down, there has been his opposite who has lifted me, cheered me on, accepted me and been there for me without wanting anything in return.
