Reynolds Composite Studio (RCS) Here at Reynolds Cycling, the hard work happens in the Reynolds Composite Studio, where our team of talented and dedicated engineers collaborates on the innovative and painstaking designs used in Reynolds Cycling wheels. There’s literally a rocket scientist at the helm of RCS, and he’s an ex-pro triathlete to boot. His name is Paul Lew, and when he’s not designing unmanned aircraft for the United States Department of Defense, he’s registering another patent, analyzing computational fluid dynamics data, or visiting the A2 Wind Tunnel in North Carolina. Paul Lew pioneered the use of unidirectional carbon fiber technology in bicycle rims, breaking ground for the entire carbon wheel industry. His designs, molds, tooling, production techniques, and testing protocols create the soul of the Reynolds Composite Studio. Alongside of Lew is a group of creative and brilliant engineers who pour their passion for the ride into every aspect of wheel design and testing. Reynolds Carbon Technology We are uncompromising in our selection of the highest quality carbon fiber – in fact, most companies order theirs off the shelf, but ours is made to order in Japan, per our specifications. HML stands for (Hybrid Modulus Laminate) It is a precise method of assigning different carbon fiber and lay-ups to each region of the rim.
VRC stands for (Variable Resin Chemistry) It is the application of a specific chemical formula of resin, optimally corresponding to different laminates within the rim.
IGC stands for (Inert Gas Compaction) It is the use of inert gas compound to mold and cure rims. IGC ensures a more durable rim, born from ideal manufacturing conditions.

BWI stands for (Brake Wear Indicator) It is a 10 mm wide red line that Reynolds embeds into the brake track. The indicator, centered over the valve hole on both sides of the rim, becomes visible when excessive wear has occurred to indicate that the wheel needs replacing. The Reynolds Composite Studio (RCS) Here at Reynolds Cycling, the hard work happens in the Reynolds Composite Studio, where our team of talented and dedicated engineers collaborates on the innovative and painstaking designs used in Reynolds Cycling wheels. There’s literally a rocket scientist at the helm of RCS, and he’s an ex-pro triathlete to boot. His name is Paul Lew, and when he’s not designing unmanned aircraft for the United States Department of Defense, he’s registering another patent, analyzing computational fluid dynamics data, or visiting the A2 Wind Tunnel in North Carolina. Paul Lew pioneered the use of unidirectional carbon technology in bicycle rims, breaking ground for the entire carbon wheel industry. His designs, molds, tooling, production techniques, and testing protocols create the soul of the Reynolds Composite Studio. Alongside of Lew is a group of conscientious and brilliant engineers who pour their passion for the ride into every aspect of wheel design and testing. MTN - Hybrid Rim Technology At Reynolds, “hybrid” doesn’t refer to snappy little cars that save gasoline. We have painstakingly developed a whole technology about hybrids, which we call Hybrid Modulus Laminate, or HML. The key principle of HML is that there is an optimal carbon fiber for each unique region of a wheel’s rim. All of our 2013 MTN Wheels are based on our MR5 rim design, in which we identify five critical areas of the wheel. These are: the side wall, the spoke face, the nipple bed, the tire channel, and the rim hook bead. Through modeling, testing, trial and error, we determined the best carbon fiber lay-up for each area. Then, using VRC, Variable Resin Chemistry, we found the optimal resin to bind the fibers. Finally we use Inert Gas Compaction(IGC) in the final molding process of the rim. This is our proprietary engineering solution that pushes over 300 psi of an inert gas into the mold creating higher compaction, eliminating voids, increasing strength, stiffness, and durability. The combination of these processes result in unparalleled mountain rim performance.

VRC stands for Variable Resin Chemistry. It is the application of a specific chemical formula of resin, optimally corresponding to different laminates within the rim.
IGC stands for Inert Gas Compaction. It is the use of inert gas compound to mold and cure rims. IGC ensures a more durable rim, born from ideal manufacturing conditions.
HUBS Each wheel set on our 2013 MTN Line features Reynolds-designed straight-pull hubs. What’s special about the hubs is their six-pawl cassette body design. That’s three more pawl than your average wheel, resulting in a faster and more consistent engagement. The hubs are anodized RED with a bright gloss finish, 7075 aluminum, weighing 155g - front and aprox. 300g - rear. They are lighter than the previous J-bend hubs, but just as durable. //29er - Carbon Wheelset Reynolds’ Carbon 29er, perhaps the most eagerly anticipated wheelset in its MTN line, was engineered exclusively with durability and strength in mind to accommodate almost any riding style. With a wide rim design (29 mm outside and 21 inside), a low, 24-hole spoke count, and inward leaning rim walls, the 29er has structural stiffness built into it. This is a solid, but nimble wheel that has noticeable power transfer while climbing. This wheel is quiet, responsive and just plain fast. Wheels are tubeless compatible with MR5 carbon technology.
