viewer’s particular experience. Join Lou Jones as he discusses a variety of techniques for maintaining image integrity in all situations, provides photographers with strategies to be an effective communicator and helps you leverage image creation beyond a single purpose.
Speaker Lou Jones Lou has spent more than two decades perfecting the craft of commercial photography with clients such as Nike, FedEx, Major League Baseball, Peugeot, People magazine and KLM Airlines. Throughout his career, Lou has always allowed time to give equal attention to a variety of nonprofit organizations. Session 5
The Future of Content Licensing REINVENT
Sponsored by ASMP, The Copyright Clearance Center and PACA
New models and challenges. Open Forum moderated by Townsend Dickinson.
What new systems are needed to protect content as it is licensed and re-licensed when rights are transferred solely via electronic transaction?
In this open forum, participants will help define the challenges ahead and posit solutions for the future of educational photography licensing. Together, we will consider the nuts-and-bolts of working in a changing environment: What rights do end users want in their licenses so they can produce competitive products?
Will agents, portals and middle people become obsolete if technology advances to a point where content producers are more able to work directly with end users?
What licensing language and terms will work to protect content while still allowing some flexibility?
What effect will new license models have on image producers? Even if we can’t completely answer such questions, we can begin to test parameters and define structures for new methods of licensing so that ultimately all parties win.
Moderator Townsend Dickinson Townsend is an executive-level manager specializing in the acquisition of photography for use in educational textbooks and related products. He is an accomplished photographer, photo editor, photo researcher and executive specializing in education orientated editorial photography. From 1991 to 2009, Townsend worked for the School Education Group at McGraw-Hill ending his career as Executive Manager of Macmillan and Glencoe’s photo teams. His photographs have been widely used in publications including Audubon, Natural History, National Geographic,
Newsweek and Time magazines. Townsend is ASPP’s past New York Chapter President and National President. He is a founding member of the North American Nature Photographer Association (NANPA) and is active in several local scientific organizations. He has lectured and written articles on the business of photography, has appeared as an expert witness on copyright law and provides professional photo collection evaluations for estate tax purposes.
Session 6
Keynote: Multimedia Storytelling REINVIGORATE Photojournalism and new technology across multiple media platforms. With technological innovations and an expanding media universe, storytelling continues to evolve. The digital age is giving documentary photographers and photojournalists extraordinary new ways to tell stories. With this new ability, you can also exercise a greater level of authorship with your work. How can the long-form, in-depth visual storyteller satisfy both their journalistic and financial needs in this environment?
Join Brian Storm, president of MediaStorm (www.mediastorm.org), to see how leading photojournalists have redefined their storytelling capabilities to include audio reporting with an eye toward publication across multiple media platforms. Their work is capturing acclaim around the world in a time when readers’ attention spans are running short.
Learn how to disseminate your work to create an impact on the subject, issue and, hopefully, society.
Keynote Speaker Brian Storm Brian is the founder and executive producer of MediaStorm (www.mediastorm.org), a multimedia production studio based in Brooklyn, New York.
