AUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET
For 35 years, the Australian String Quartet has created unforgettable string quartet performances for national and international audiences. Dedicated to musical excellence with a distinctly Australian flavour, our purpose is to create chemistry and amplify intimacy through experiences that connect people with string quartet music. From our home base at the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music, we reach out across Australia and the world to engage people with an outstanding program of performances, workshops, commissions and education projects.
Our distinct sound is enhanced by a matched set of 18th century Guadagnini instruments, handcrafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini between c.1743 and 1784 in Turin and Piacenza, Italy. These precious instruments are on loan for our exclusive use through the generosity of UKARIA. Dale Barltrop plays a 1784 Guadagnini Violin, Turin Francesca Hiew plays a 1748-49 Guadagnini Violin, Piacenza Stephen King plays a 1783 Guadagnini Viola, Turin* Michael Dahlenburg plays a c.1743 Guadagnini Violincello, Piacenza ‘ Ngeringa’ *Stephen King is currently on long service leave and is replaced by Christopher Cartlidge.

Dale has performed as a chamber and orchestral musician across the globe. In addition to his position with the ASQ, he serves as Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and has been Concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Principal Second Violin of the St Paul Chamber Orchestra. He has appeared as soloist and director with all three orchestras.
A musician of diverse interests and influences, Francesca Hiew has maintained a multifaceted career. Prior to joining the Australian String Quartet, Francesca was a member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She enjoys teaching and coaching chamber ensembles, regularly tutoring for the Australian Youth Orchestra, Adelaide Youth Orchestra and the University of Adelaide. A former student and fellow of the Australian National Academy of Music, Francesca is passionate about fostering the future of chamber music.
Hailing from Brisbane, Dale made his solo debut with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15 and was Concertmaster of the Queensland and Australian Youth Orchestras. He then moved to the USA to attend the University of Maryland and later the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with William Preucil, Gerald Fischbach and members of the Guarneri and Cavani Quartets.
Growing up as the second youngest of seven children in Brisbane, Francesca began learning the violin at the age of four at the Stoliarsky School of Music. Her primary teachers were William Hennessy, Michele Walsh, Emin Tagiev and Mark Lakirovich.

Michael studied cello with Howard Penny at the Australian National Academy of Music and Molly Kadarauch at the University of Melbourne.
Christopher Cartlidge has been a member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra since 2011 and in 2019 was appointed Associate Principal Viola. He regularly appears as a guest in orchestras across Australia and New Zealand and is in great demand as a chamber musician. Chris is a founding member of the Melbourne Ensemble. In 2015 he was a grand-finalist and multiple prize winner in the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards and has appeared as soloist with both the Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras.
He was Principal Cellist of Melbourne Chamber Orchestra until 2020, and has been guest Principal with Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (NZ) and Orchestra Victoria. He has worked as a guest with the Flinders Quartet, Australian Chamber Orchestra, ACO2 and the ARTARIA ensemble. Michael was a founding member of Hamer Quartet, First Prize, Grand Prize and Audience Prize winners at the 2009 Asia Pacific Chamber Competition. He has performed at numerous festivals and concert halls around the world and has studied chamber music with many leading chamber musicians.
Chris plays a 1783 Guadagnini Viola, Turin, Italy, on loan through UKARIA. He appears with the ASQ courtesy of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
DAVID GRECO BARITONE GUEST ARTIST
Internationally regarded for his interpretations of Schubert Lieder and works of J.S Bach, ARIA Award-nominated baritone David Greco has sung on some of the finest stages across Europe, and has appeared as a principal in the world’s most exciting opera festivals including Festival Aix-en Provence and Glyndebourne Festival Opera. In 2014, he became the first Australian appointed to a position with the Sistine Chapel Choir in the Vatican, Rome. David regularly appears as a soloist with Australia’s finest ensembles and orchestras, such as the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra and most recently with the Sydney Symphony in their Helpmann Awardwinning concerts of Bach’s cantata for bass,

In 2017, he was a principal artist with Opera Australia, appearing in The Eighth Wonder and The Love of Three Oranges, and his appearance as Seneca in Pinchgut Opera’s production of The Coronation of Poppea received critical acclaim. David is an active researcher into historical performance practice of 19th-century voice and recently received his doctorate from the University of Melbourne. His PhD has led to the first Australian recording project into the historically informed performance of Schubert’s songs cycles Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin on the ABC Classic label, the latter receiving an ARIA nomination for Best Classical Album in 2020. www.davidgreco.info
ANDREA LAM PIANO GUEST ARTIST
Pronounced a ‘real talent’ by the Wall Street Journal, New York-based Australian pianist Andrea Lam performs with orchestras and leading conductors in Australasia, Japan, China and the United States, including the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and all major Australian symphony orchestras. From New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to the Sydney Opera House, she has played for Sydney Festival, Musica Viva’s Huntington Festival (Australia), Orford Festival (Canada), Chelsea Music Festival (USA) with works from Bach, Schumann and Chopin to Aaron Jay Kernis, Lilya Ugay, and Nigel Westlake. Recent engagements include New York’s Chelsea Music Festival, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Melbourne Recital Centre, Monash University and as soloist
with the Melbourne and Canberra Symphony Orchestras, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and Australian Youth Orchestra. A keen chamber musician, Andrea also performs and records extensively as pianist of New York’s acclaimed Claremont Trio. Andrea Lam was a semi-finalist in the 2009 Van Cliburn Competition, silver medalist in the 2009 San Antonio Piano Competition, winner of the ABC’s ‘Young Performer of the Year’ Award in the Keyboard section, and the Yale Woolsey Hall Competition. Recordings include Mozart concerti with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Huntington Festival’s commemorative album (ABC Classics) and with renowned cellist Matt Haimovitz (Pentatone Oxingale).
