IVES WESTLAKE DEBUSSY

TOUR THREE 4 -20 SEPTEMBER AUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET National Season 2019

Welcome to our third and final National Season tour of 2019. This colourful program of 20th and 21st century music is a testament to the power of the human spirit. From the reverent nostalgia of American hymn tunes in Ives’ From the Salvation Army to the height of melodic rapture in Debussy’s intoxicating string quartet, there is a formidable cast of characters to be unleashed in this concert. We are thrilled to be presenting the premiere of Nigel Westlake’s String Quartet no 3 Sacred Sky. With sincere thanks to Carl Wood and Don and Veronica Aldridge for their generous support, we are honoured and humbled to be bringing to life a work that Nigel has written in memory of his beloved sister.

This tour also marks the launch of our exciting 2020 National Program. If you haven’t already, we invite you to pick up a copy of the brochure and subscribe early to take advantage of the great discounts to our 2020 National Tours and other diverse musical projects.

WELCOME TO TOUR THREE

NATIONAL SEASON 2019 As we approach the end of 2019, we look forward to taking our ASQ Festivals to Queenstown, New Zealand for the first time, followed by a national tour of The Glad Tomorrow with the extraordinary singer-songwriter Katie Noonan. AUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET For over 30 years, the Australian String Quartet (ASQ) has created unforgettable string quartet performances for national and international audiences. Dedicated to musical excellence with a distinctly Australian flavour, the ASQ’s purpose is to create chemistry and amplify intimacy through experiences that connect people with string quartet music. From our home base at the University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, the Quartet reaches out across Australia and the world to engage people with an outstanding program of performances, workshops, commissions and education projects. The Quartet's distinct sound is enhanced by a matched set of 18th century Guadagnini instruments, handcrafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini between c.1743 and 1784 in Turin and Piacenza,

Italy. These precious instruments are on loan to the ASQ for their exclusive use through the generosity of UKARIA. Six masterworks by Beethoven, Dutilleux, Dvořák, Janáček and Mozart, as well as two world premieres of new Australian music and a tour with acclaimed pianist Konstantin Shamray make up our three major National Tours in 2020. Looking beyond, the Quartet’s ground-breaking Close Quarters series continues with more compelling partnerships. Its regional festivals travel again to Dunkeld and Margaret River, and for the very first time, to the shire of Dungog in New South Wales. The Quartet is thrilled to join creative forces with Sydney Dance Company for a brand new work, and in the 250th year since the great composer’s birth, Beethoven is celebrated with a series of special events across the country.

At home in South Australia, we continue our work as Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music with projects including the annual ASQ Day at Elder, and performances as part of the Elder Hall Lunchtime Concert series, and Mornings at UKARIA will continue to bring the sounds of the string quartet to the beautiful landscape of the Adelaide Hills.

CHARLES IVES (1874–1954)

fashioned a four-movement work based on the form of a typical church service, but filled it with his favourite hymn tunes to evoke the spirit of a revival meeting.

I — Chorale

All four movements are saturated in exuberant American hymns. But it’s more than a mere patchwork. Ives doesn’t give us note-for-note samples of hymns in their entirety. Rather, he slyly remodels them – using fragments, changing notes here and there, creating vague suggestions of a tune often more felt than heard.

String Quartet no 1, From the Salvation Army

II — Prelude III — Offertory IV — Postlude A report of an early Salvation Army revival service in America paints a lively picture: The lung-power and unction that these people throw into their singing is immense… there is a clapping of hands, keeping time to music… No particular person starts the tunes; each of the officers, man or woman, takes a hand at it as the spirit moves; often before a new verse of the hymn can be commenced, a voice strikes in with the chorus once more. Charles Ives was familiar with this kind of free-for-all singalong from his experiences at ‘camp meetings’ in New England as a boy, where his father often directed the music. George Ives taught his son to appreciate that there is much more to musical beauty than steady rhythm and perfect intonation. ‘You won’t get a heroic ride to Heaven on pretty little sounds,’ he used to say. Later, as a student at Yale University, Ives embarked on a string quartet – a conventional vehicle for ‘pretty little sounds’ if ever there was one. His father was dead, his composition teacher wasn’t interested in his radical musical experiments, and the hymns at Center Church New Haven (where he worked as an organist) were sung much more sedately than he would have liked. So he

The first movement is a conventional but delightfully leisurely fugue based on Lowell Mason’s Missionary Hymn (‘From Greenland’s icy mountains’). This is followed by a lively and increasingly adventurous ‘Prelude’ (filled with aberrant echoes of Beulah Land), and then a reflective ‘Offertory’, based on Nettleton (‘Come, thou fount of ev’ry blessing’), which forms the heart of the work. The ‘Postlude’ builds up into a joyful frenzy, and Ives layers several tunes together at the climax (including the rousing ‘Stand up for Jesus’). Listeners can try to spot the hymn tunes, or simply let themselves be carried away by the shouting spontaneity of the quartet. But as old George Ives used to say, ‘Don’t pay too much attention to the sounds… for if you do, you may miss the music.’ David John Lang © 2019

NIGEL WESTLAKE

He writes extensively for the concert hall, receiving commissions to write for orchestras, ensembles and soloists. Nigel has received many awards including two Arias, 15 AGSC / APRA awards, across both classical and screen categories, the Paul Lowin Orchestral Prize, The Limelight Award and the Gold Medal for “Best Original Music” at the New York International Radio Festival. In 2004 he was awarded the HC Coombs Creative Arts Fellowship at the Australian National University and holds an honorary Doctorate in Music, awarded by the University of New South Wales in 2012. He has conducted all the major symphony orchestras in Australia and made his US conducting debut in 2016 at the Lincoln Centre with the New York Philharmonic.

String Quartet no 3, Sacred Sky (2019) (World Premiere) I — Sacred Sky II — Where the Spirit Dances by the Edge of the Sea III — The Turning Tide IV — The Journey Begins Sacred Sky is dedicated to the memory of my sister Kate, who lost her battle with cancer early in 2018. An actor, singer, visual artist, and extraordinary event producer, Kate was a beautiful and totally unique individual on many levels. As siblings we shared a very close bond and were great mates right to the end. I have endeavoured to invoke Kate’s spirit, in the hope of imbuing the music with themes of beauty, energy, soulfulness, and transcendence. Inevitably the fingerprints of grief and sadness permeate the musical narrative at times. The titles of each movement are taken from four of Kate’s seascape paintings, a collection of visual meditations based on unnamed locations, somewhere on the eastern seaboard of Australia. The pictures are studies in the reflection, scattering and radiance of light and shadow, and they inhabit a rich and evocative emotional terrain.

I am very grateful to Dale, Sharon, Francesca and Stephen for so willingly agreeing to be a part of this journey and also to Carl Wood and Don and Veronica Aldridge for their very generous sponsorship of the work. Sacred Sky was composed for, and commissioned by the Australian String Quartet with generous support from Carl Wood and Don and Veronica Aldridge. Nigel Westlake @ 2019

CLAUDE DEBUSSY

PROGRAM NOTES CLAUDE DEBUSSY (1862–1918) String Quartet in G minor, op 10 I — Animé et très décidé II — Assez vif et bien rythmé III — Andantino, doucement expressif IV — Très modéré – En animant peu à peu – Très mouvementé et avec passion Claude Debussy was always a bit of a rebel. He was not a model student, despite his obvious gifts, because he was always intent on doing things his own way, finding his own path. ‘Tradition’ was not a good enough reason for anything – he famously declared that ‘pleasure’ was the only rule he followed. So it seemed out of character when, at the age of 31, he completed a four-movement string quartet and had it published in the conventional way as ‘String Quartet in G minor, opus 10’. This was, in fact, the only time Debussy included the key and an opus number in the title of his work (‘10’ was apparently chosen quite arbitrarily). It was probably done more tongue-in-cheek than in deference to tradition. Yet Debussy was quite sincere in wanting to grapple with the established musical forms. He was still finding his voice; his groundbreaking Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune wasn’t composed until the following year. He didn’t want to ignore tradition altogether; he wanted to speak to it, because he had something different to say. Early listeners were baffled by the quartet. One critic wrote that it had ‘an assemblage of sonorities sometimes charming, sometimes irritating… it is very distinguished, but one does not know how to take hold of it.’

Perhaps the trick is not to try too hard. All we have to do is follow the music momentby-moment, and we find that it flows as naturally as a river. Nevertheless, there is an underlying logic to the Quartet: its first few notes furnish the material for almost everything that follows. Yet the music does not demand analytical listening. Rather than looking behind or ahead, as Western music before Debussy tended to do implicitly, we’re simply asked to enjoy whatever sound is directly in front of us. This shifts the focus away from themes and forms to more immediate pleasures, like texture. Paul Dukas, another early reviewer of this work, wrote about how the Quartet’s melodies seem to stride across ‘a sumptuous and finely decorated carpet.’ So, revel in those continuous burbling figures that make the first movement so fluid; the rich blend of bowing, plucking and strumming that animates the second movement; the lonely, meandering solos that wander through the ethereal third movement. Then enjoy how all these textures and more come together to clinch the brilliant finale. Let the melodies look after themselves; with Debussy, it’s all about the beautiful sonority of each and every moment. David John Lang © 2019
