Madeleine is a freelance director and facilitator. She is passionate about creating high quality theatre that is accessible for everybody. She’s worked at a number of places, including Hull Truck Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Lyceum in Edinburgh, and Royal and Derngate in Northampton. She cofounded Assemble Fest in 2013 and co-directed the pilot project The Little Match Girl in December 2013.
Mungo is a theatre producer living and working in Hull. Along with his Assemble Fest duties, he is the cofounder and producer of Middle Child Theatre Company, and has worked for a number of other theatrical organisations in the city. He is constantly amazed at the untapped capabilities of Microsoft Excel, shaves very rarely, and wishes he had a dæmon ‘like in Northern Lights’. It would be a squirrel.

Currently working as an independent Creative Producer, Bex founded and produced Birmingham Cabaret Festival, worked as a freelance Programmer at The Mockingbird Theatre, and cofounded the award-winning OJS Theatre Co., whilst working as Assistant Theatre Manager at Old Joint Stock Theatre. She is currently producing TakeOver Festival at York Theatre Royal and organising loads of additional activity for Assemble Fest.
Having worked in marketing since 2007, Rich manages the communications and promotions for a range of clients, from solicitors and engineering consultancies to American Chip Spice and Lulu the Pomeranian dog. As the Director of digital agency sobananapenguin, he orchestrates multiple projects and manages a team of writers and content creators, also making time to deliver talks at universities, business events, and sometimes to himself in the mirror.
A drama graduate of Hull University, Beth has called Hull home for nearly five years. Spending much of her time dressing up and teaching in the city’s museums, she enjoys working with children and organising events and projects. Beth has been involved with Assemble Fest since its first year and is really excited to be involved again, working closely with businesses and organisations up and down the avenue to help everyone get the most out of the festival.

Andrew worked in box office and front of house in theatres in the Midlands, Wales and the North West before moving east four years ago. Now working a regular 9-5 job for the first time since the late ‘80s, he has more time to actually go to the theatre and is really looking forward to taking full advantage of 2017 City of Culture. This will be Andrew’s third Assemble Fest and he can’t wait till the busy day in May, when he’ll work with venue managers up and down the avenue.
Jose is a freelance stage manager and lighting designer from Hull, currently employed at Hull Truck Theatre as technician. Since graduating from the University of Hull, he has worked with a range of theatremakers from a local to international level and took on the role of Event Stage Manager for the inaugural Assemble Fest back in 2014. Ella Street based, Jose is a Newland enthusiast and you’ll often spot his luscious beard in its many bars.

The Pub Corner Poets are dedicated to discovering new artists in and around Hull and providing a platform for them to develop and showcase their abilities; whether they be actors, writers, poets or musicians. The company has been doing this for over two years with regular performances and gigs at local venues in and around Newland Avenue area. The Pub Corner Poets strive to provide opportunities for new playwrights to stage their work. Artistic Director Tyler Mortimer heads up a diligent team of students and ex-students, most with a background in drama, as they seek to encourage the growth of theatre and performance poetry in the Hull area.
Part table-top board game, part immersive theatrical experience; Dngns ‘n’ Drgns: Abridged is an entirely improvised, highenergy romp tailored exclusively to an audience’s suggestions.
ANGRY was The Pub Corner Poets’ debut production, written by their now resident playwright, Josh Overton, and performed at the New Adelphi club in October 2014. It was then toured to the National Student Drama Festival, the New Diorama Theatre’s Incoming Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. ANGRY won The Sunday Times Best Playwriting Award for 2015 and The Pub Corner Poets were nominated for Total Theatre’s Best Emerging Theatre Company award for their sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe.
The first performance of the day will be tailored for a younger audience, with the rest of the shows targeting families with older children. The final show of the day will be a 16+ more adult (by which we mean far more childish) performance.

Theatre On The Edge was formed in 2012. Our core members are employed in various ways in the performing arts in Hull and we work with local students, actors and performers. Our 2014/15 productions The Last Leviathans and The Clapham Girls’ War were based on real events that affected the people of Hull, using drama, dance, live music and multi-media to tell their stories.
It’s Robert Fish’s first day at Recycling Unlimited. You’ll meet him as he starts work in The Yard. He’s struggling to put together the pieces of his life after a traumatic head injury affected his memory and he finds getting through to people is an effort. Of course his problems are made worse because he’s a man; and men don’t talk about these things, do they?
Assemble Fest 2014 was a highlight for us with our show Film Noir at the Piper Club. Our current production, Six Characters in Search of a Handout, is a new black comedy that looks at the topical issue of food banks and the people who have to use them. The play is influenced by Luigi Pirandello’s absurdist work, Six Characters in Search of an Author. One of the themes that Pirandello considers is whether art can ever truly describe reality.
Fortunately for him there are people at Recycling Unlimited who know where he’s coming from, because they’ve been there themselves and, through laughter, friendship and understanding, his colourful gang of new workmates give him help and support when he needs it most.
Will Ramsey in the Hull Daily Mail said: “Comedy doesn’t get much darker. A funny and thoughtful play with sharp humour, an intriguing set up and strong performances.” We’re taking it to the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2016, so maybe we’ll see you there.

Broccolily Theatre was founded in 2014 by Ruby Thompson and Samuel Caseley. We make theatre that has a direct interaction with the community in which it is made. By travelling to our audiences and clearing the path for them to come to us, we ensure that our work is always accessible.

Our shows will always be colourful, simple and smart, as we believe that theatre for young people should be as exciting and innovative as any. Broccolily Theatre’s most recent production, Ten Foot Tales, was produced in association with Bridgeview Whitehouse Sullivan Centre and performed at Hull Truck Theatre. The show, which was created using the stories written by children from Bridgeview, will return to Truck for the public in October half term.

The Roaring Girls have been making theatre since 2014, and are delighted to say this is their third Assemble Fest. The company strives to tell intimate, personal stories which explore the world we live in.
Rachael is finally getting married.
Our work is somewhere in-between theatre and a conversation; it is honest, charming, and informal. Often drawing on autobiographical experiences, The Roaring Girls want to talk about big ideas on a small, relatable scale. We like to get people chatting, chuckling and considering different people’s views on the world. Grab a cup of tea, and let’s put the world to rights. As graduates from the University of Hull, we want to make shows which are relevant in Hull and further afield. The Roaring Girls were part of New Diorama’s Emerging Graduate Companies Scheme 2015, and are now a Hull Truck Theatre Supported Company. Our Assemble Fest 2014 show, Skirts, Shirts and Vintage Dresses toured to London and to Bern (Switzerland) and our 2015 show Broken Little Robots has been in development and will be performed at Hull Truck Theatre this July.

Armed with a decade’s worth of bridal magazines, she’s picked out the perfect venue, the perfect dress, and the perfect flowers. If only her bridesmaids were so perfect. Lizi is somehow the maid of honour. As Rachael’s best friend she has been given the privilege of walking down the aisle with her, the responsibility of helping to choose decorations, and the task of being an emotional crutch to the perfectionist in the veil. Don’t even get her started on the hen do. All The Bridesmaids I Never Had is a show about friendship, tradition, and royal icing. This funny and charming show, featuring a singing Saturday girl, follows Rachael’s hunt for the perfect bridesmaids, with a dollop of nostalgia, as she reflects on the friends who didn’t make the cut. It’s going to be the wedding of the year, and you’re invited to the cake tasting, so settle in with a cup of tea, and hope that The Roaring Girls save you a slice.

Middle Child theatre company exists to create electric events that attract new audiences to the theatre; be it people who are convinced that the theatre is not for them, people who believe that the theatre isn’t an exciting place to be, or people more likely to spend their evenings on a night out, at a gig or at a football match.
Is it better to be remembered than to be known? Middle Child presents writer Loren O’Brien’s one-woman show about fallen idols and the price of fame, with live music and brutally dark comedy.
Our recent productions have included: Ten Storey Love Song, an adaptation of Richard Milward’s cult novel, featuring live electronic music and video projections, Mercury Fur, a site-specific performance of “Britain’s most controversial play”, written by Philip Ridley and performed in an empty office building on Lowgate, and Weekend Rockstars, an album play written by Luke Barnes and performed by a full band, which won the Musical Theatre Network’s Development Award at Edinburgh Fringe in 2015. We have also produced and performed the alternative pantomime at Fruit for the last four years and are behind Never Mind the Pub Quiz at the same venue.
Cara is thirty minutes away from turning 28. She’s an aspiring musician who’s doing it all: YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat and Vine. She may have even done a cheeky sex video. Her heroes Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin and the Elephant Man had all achieved fame and fortune by Cara’s age, along with an early trip to the grave and a listing in the 27 Club. But Cara’s frustrated. She’s been to music school, done a workshop with Adele and she even has an agent – admittedly a mediocre one, but an agent nonetheless. So what else can she possibly do? It’s a frustrated cry, a privileged one: why is life hard? Where is the fame she has come to expect? She’s followed in Janis and Amy’s footsteps and they’ve led her nowhere. Cara’s worked hard all her lifetime but will she find that fame is a losing game she wishes she never played?

Bellow Theatre is an emerging company of Hull and Bristol graduates, and recently a Supported Artist of Hull Truck Theatre. As a company we are fascinated by stories, new and old. We like to explore stories that have a life of their own, that twist, turn, and collide. We like our work to be energetic, fun and, frequently, a bit strange. We often stage work in unusual places; we’ve staged shows in a pop-up restaurant, under an oak tree, in a club and a café, as well as a few traditional venues along the way. We try to tell stories that are touching, funny and above all relevant. We always try to uncover the hidden voices in a tale, the voices of those who may have been forgotten, excluded or silenced. We strive to create shows that amuse and move people in equal measure, and that invite them to explore their own lives through new and fascinating lenses.
Persil and Ariel run the laundry on Newland Avenue. They used to be in the pie making business, but they had a spot of bother with the police last summer and had to move on. There’s never a shortage of dirty laundry so they spend their days under piles of grubby underwear, stained shirts and soapsuds. But the washing trade is one they know well, in fact it’s an old family business of their grandmother’s, and as she used to say, “a rinse, lather and scrub seems shorter with a story”.
Last summer our show Billy Through The Window premiered at Theatre 503 before a month-long run at Underbelly during the Edinburgh Fringe, and our show for Assemble Fest 2015, The Cautionary Tale of Horrid Ham Carver, toured to Helmsley’s Littlefest.

So they’re overworked and underappreciated, but there’s always time to tell a tale. As they start to relate an old Breton legend about a vengeful washerwoman spirit, they begin to feel a little rebellious themselves. Will they get to finish the story? Or will their past come out in the wash? And who will be hung out to dry? In a mixture of songs, stories, and odd socks, Bellow Theatre cause some familyfriendly, fairy liquid fuelled chaos.

With captivating modern folk songs, The Dyr Sister takes the place of a mannequin brought to life, painting a fascinating canvas of sound as she goes. Her original and innovative pieces are influenced by a wide range of genres, from jungle and dubstep through trip hop and hip hop, and ending somewhere deep amongst the many varieties of traditional folk music from around the world.

From the poetic to the profound, and from the hilarious to the honest, we want you to add your stories and moments of Newland Avenue in Clothes Factor’s car park. Prepare for an exploration of how spaces can shape our moments.
WINDOW PAINTING Just as a photographer captures people, an artist will be set up in The English Muse (10am-1pm) and Relax Café (11am-2pm) to capture passers-by in a special way. From the perspective of the café, they will create a mural of people on the avenue, filling it with portraits as the day progresses.
FARINO Join us for a spot of Spanish-inspired busking! Farino are an instrumental acoustic guitar duo who specialise in intricate, melodic playing, ranging from the fast and the frenetic to the delicate and delightful. Farino play a mixture of original and cover material spanning many genres, including flamenco, Latin, jazz and pop.
PUNCH AND JUDY A modern Punch and Judy puppet show with an emphasis on comedy and fun, great for all ages! Join us at Larkin’s at 11am and 1pm for a traditional, popular – and sometimes violent – puppet show featuring Pulcinella (Mr. Punch), his wife Judy and a range of comic characters.
GET CRAFTY! Judy’s Attic will be running a very special free Assemble Fest craft workshop throughout the day at Zoo Café. Drop in with the family to make masks, headdresses and more! Judy’s Attic is a workers’ co-operative that supports local artists, craft-workers and makers to achieve their creative aspirations through community-based, collaborative working.

RED COATS SPORTS DAY Welcome to the biggest family sporting event of the century! Throughout the day, members of Hesitant Strangers Theatre will be putting children and adults through their paces with classic fun games, including tug-of-war, three-legged race, egg-and-spoon race and much more. But don’t take the games lightly, for there are prizes to be won and the role of local sports hero to be gained. Taking place in the Rosebery Gardens from 11:30am12:15pm and 3pm-3:45pm.
KINGSTON SWING Stumble upon Kingston Swing as they perform mini flash mobs along Newland and in businesses throughout the day. Expect lots of energy, great tunes and a very friendly atmosphere.
HENNA SCIENCE BUSKERS The Hull Street Scientists are all about encouraging people to think, see and do science in a different way through science busking and street performance at Larkin’s at 12pm and 2pm. Using a variety of different scientifically inspired demonstrations, they take science from the labs onto the streets and into the hands of anyone and everyone. With a selection of thought-provoking and exciting experiments, they give audiences young and old a chance to be wowed and amazed!

Talented local henna artist, Laila Hamasalih, will be available throughout the day to decorate your hands with beautiful patterns in traditional Indian henna.
BOBBY BUBBLES Prepare to get a bit soapy as Bobby Bubbles and friends show you how to make and twist ginormous soap bubbles! Join us in Clothes Factor’s car park between 1pm and 3pm.
LANGUAGE CAFE Newland’s resident Language Cafe will be setting up shop in Kurna Chata for a special language exchange event. Drop in to learn new phrases or add your own to the collection!
ANIMAL SAFARI Embark on an expedition around Newland Avenue as you go in search of the most HULL SAMBA illustrious of animals! This is why we run our very own Happy Hour each year. This takes the form of a pay-what-youdecide scheme, so if you see a show between 3pm and 4pm, you simply pay what you are able to, and what you think the performance deserves. No questions asked, no catches – just pay what you decide, and enjoy the show. The proceeds from Happy Hour then go toward funding worthy causes. Between 2014 and 2015, you helped us to raise £625 for charities and community projects.
