SATURDAY 3RD JUNE 2017 FOLLOWED BY OUR STREET OUR STAGE CELEBRATING NEWLAND'S HERITAGE - FROM 7:30PM
GET READY FOR AS We’re incredibly excited to bring you the fourth edition of Newland Avenue’s annual festival. Made in collaboration with traders and residents, this year we present six specially commissioned shows by local theatremakers. Each will be performed multiple times on Saturday 3 June, running to a schedule that allows you to see all six if desired and still have time to grab a bite to eat. On top of this we have tons of additional activity, which has been split into four themes. From magical intrigue and a traditional flea circus, to the return of the very popular musical mannequins, there’s tons of free fun for all the family. Plus, with 2017 being our year as the UK City of Culture, we’re putting on an extra special closing event. Our Street Our Stage celebrates Newland’s diverse heritage and brings the past to life through a free promenade event along the street itself. Beginning with the avenue’s origins as green fields and moving to the present day, this is a shared experience designed for all generations.

This is our most ambitious year to date and we need you to help make it a huge success. Whether you come to see the shows, join us for our closing event or simply get the kids involved in some face painting, you’ll be supporting your local independent businesses. Newland has a fantastic local community spirit and we simply wouldn’t be here without the support of the traders and residents. Maybe you’ll grab breakfast at Café One 11, a slice of cake at Lydia’s or cocktails at Level. You might get your hair done at Blowouts, pick up some flowers from Eden or simply pop to Scribes to get something printed - there really is everything you need down a single street. And if you fancy proposing a toast to local businesses and community spirit, we have our very own Assemble Fest beer at Larkin’s, kindly created by Yorkshire Brewing Company. Make sure to enjoy a pint of it while it lasts. We’re so excited to see you at this year’s festival. We’re sure you’ll love experiencing performance where you least expect it. THE CHASE
Hull Carnival Arts with Bandanarama and Mambo Jambo
THE COMPANY
THE SHOW
Hull Carnival Arts creates, produces and directs participatory live arts events, processions and parades. The company set up its own community street band, Bandamarama, in 2015, specialising in procession, parade and walkabout performance. The 15-piece band is a mix of brass, wind, percussion, strings and voice, playing a lively mash-up of disco hits, New Orleans funeral music, indie classics and Cockney um-pa. Guaranteed to get kids bopping, nanas dancing, and adult toes tapping.
“Crime prevention is everybody’s business” ...but would you get involved?
Mambo Jambo are Hull-based musical adventurers with a national touring profile, experienced at serving up a wild and joyfully varied mix of acoustic roots styles, crossing time zones and continents with more instruments than you’d think possible. Each of their shows is a musical journey. This collaboration between Mambo Jambo and Bandanarama is an exciting new venture for both bands, and promises to bring an infectious musical energy and feel-good factor to Newland Avenue and Assemble Fest audiences.

An adrenaline-filled adventure that follows the story of two hapless thieves, a heist, an unlikely set of heroes and heroines, and a community pulling together in the face of adversity. Comic action and an eclectic mix of musical mayhem that bursts onto the streets, and into the audience. The Chase blends non-verbal promenading performance with music, farce, foolery and audience participation. This new work grew out of a conversation between Mambo Jambo and Bandanarama, about collaborating on a piece of street music with an Eastern European and Balkan flavour. Pete Jack from Mambo Jambo suggested Misirlou, a traditional song from the Eastern Mediterranean region, popularised by Dick Dale’s 1962 surf guitar version, featured in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. It was from this starting point that The Chase was born, and the story started to take shape. Immerse yourself in the exotic melodies and swirling rhythms, as you are encircled by the characters and their entrancing theme. Mentor: Petra Massey, Spymonkey

HONEY, I STEREOTYPED THE KIDS SeeGold Productions & She Productions
THE COMPANY
THE SHOW
This year, SeeGold and She Productions are collaborating for the first time. Both companies have centred their work around men and women, respectively, and are looking forward to uniting their collective experiences to produce a narrative balanced between both sides of the coin.
“Between birth and three years of age, the human brain increases to 80% of its adult size.” Children are Like Sponges by Angela Polloni
She Productions, East Riding Theatre’s all-female company in residence, has produced six original shows since forming in 2015, including family musicals The StorytEllas and White Rabbit in Easterland, as well as revues such as MissCast and Beverley Does Broadway. Their new musical It’s Different For Girls, inspired by Hull’s own 60s girl band Mandy & the Girlfriends, premieres in September at ERT. SeeGold Productions don’t have much of a CV to boast yet. They toured a piece of new writing called You Boy last year and lost a load of money. They have also been working on a short film entitled To She Or Not To She, to be released later in 2017. Both companies endeavour to create bold, innovative and engaging theatre, and believe in the importance of effective communication and teamwork.

A playground, a classroom, a garden, a bathroom; three kids who don’t know what life has in store for them. For now they’re friends (except when they’re worst enemies). Life is simple enough, but the stresses and strains of the adult world are all around for them to soak up. Honey, I Stereotyped the Kids is a short play for ladies and gentlemen about boys and girls. Revisit the conversations of your childhood and hear the bits you weren’t listening to. SeeGold and She Productions offer a series of windows into “playground politics” and aim to shine a light on the importance of taking ownership of our vocabularies. Through words, songs and games, this heart-warming and hilarious story tries to better understand all of the things we say but don’t realise anyone is listening to, and what our listeners do when they’ve heard it. GOBBLE Bellow Theatre
THE COMPANY
THE SHOW
A Supported Artist of Hull Truck Theatre and selected for New Diorama Theatre’s Emerging Companies 2017/18, Bellow Theatre are a Hull-based new writing company rooted in brave and stirring storytelling.
We don’t know the rules, or where to begin, but you get to pick a starter and we have to dive in.
Bellow explore stories that have a life of their own, that twist, turn, and collide. They always try to champion the downtrodden, forgotten, excluded, or silenced. Through work that is intimate, moving, and celebrates DIY aesthetics, they often bring live folk music into the mix and experiment with the feel of open landscapes and nature. Bellow’s 2015 Edinburgh show Billy Through the Window spent a month at Underbelly and was nominated for the Brighton Fringe Award for Excellence. Recently they have created work for Assemble Fest 2015/2016, The Amy Johnson Festival, Heads Up Festival and York Theatre Royal’s On Our Turf initiative. Catch their show Bare Skin On Briny Waters at Incoming Festival on Sunday 4 June, and their Assemble Fest 2016 show, The Washerwomen’s Warning, at Deershed Festival on Sunday 23 July.
Join us round the stew-pot, pull up a chair, roll-up your sleeves. We think it’s time we talked about food, and we’re inviting you to come and tuck in. We tell stories at feasts and family meals. We spill our hearts over breakfast and dinner. But sometimes the ingredients we use are a little strange. Sometimes the tales we tell become a little twisted. Because we calorie count and guilt trip. We gorge and then purge. We photograph meals we do not finish, and hide our faces behind the biscuit tin. So how do we become at one with our appetites? With a mixture of cheese chunks, chocolate cake and pomegranate pips, Bellow Theatre dish up a family-friendly food frenzy. There may be food fights. There may be stew slurped. There will definitely be free food. Did we mention that? Food for free. Mentor: Little Bulb Theatre

OMNI-SCIENCE Brick by Brick
THE COMPANY
THE SHOW
Brick by Brick are a theatre company based in Hull, created by University of Hull graduates Jack Chamberlain and Jack Fielding.
Have you ever needed a menial task completing that you simply didn’t have time to attend to? Have you ever needed something for the house but felt too run down and tired to get it? Have you ever fancied going out for a walk but just can’t be bothered? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have your own personal robotic assistant?
They are a company that strives to utilise the power of laughter to tell a story. Their mission is to provide audiences with a comical reflection on the nuances that make us human, achieving these aims by experimenting with both performance space and style. It is how audiences engage with the work they create that inspires Brick by Brick the most, whether that involves directly impacting upon the events of a show or engaging with it in a new manner. Their recent work includes Procrastinate, a one-man wordless comedy that relishes in both the stupid and the strange things we get up to when we should be doing something important. The show combines the use of technology and clowning to tell a love story in a way that only 2017 can understand. After all, every emoticon counts. ;-)

MERMARELLA Indigo Moon Theatre
THE COMPANY
THE SHOW
Founded by Anna Ingleby and Haviel Perdana, Hull-based Indigo Moon Theatre has been producing highly visual puppet theatre with a global flavour, touring nationally and internationally since 2001.
From one of its earliest beginnings in ancient Egypt, a story best known across the globe as Cinderella shape-shifts its common threads into the world of the seas. Linking nations, hosting both travelling ships above and a wealth of secret sea creatures below.
They promote meaningful expression and open up new worlds, either through their subject matter, their puppets, or through inventive use of simple techniques to inspire others. They seek opportunities within shows to appeal at different levels to different ages, and, in keeping with tradition, to communicate as well as entertain. Avoiding the “pink and fluffy”, Indigo Moon prefer to challenge, to stimulate critical thinking, and to promote tolerance. Touring has taken them as far as Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Germany, where in 2015 they were the only UK company to perform at the triennial international Shadow Theatre Festival. They were shadow theatre consultants for Take That’s 2015 Arena Tour, and have also appeared on TV in Peaky Blinders. Currently, Indigo Moon Theatre Indonesia is being created alongside Indigo Moon Theatre UK, with Mermarella the first production to include local younger team members Frances Allison, Rachel Harris and Zoe Hughes.
Cinderella is not the same creature as those she serves, who envy her gifts. They dwell not far from where the green waters of the Nile flow into the blue waters of the Mediterranean. She craves for life above water – but will she overcome all obstacles, and at what cost? Threads from other tales weave their way into this well-known story. Can she survive the treacherous journey to the fairy sea witch, and why is it so difficult to achieve her dream? Is it really worth the price, will she ever really be accepted, or should she have just accepted her old life? Puppetry, shadow theatre and acting bring these comic twisting tails to their modern day outcome, aimed at thinking families and the young at heart of all ages. Mentor: Nick Barnes

Mrs. Johnson is determined to bring a touch of La La Land to Newland Avenue and has spent hours transforming the venue into a place fit for the nuptials of her beloved son. She’s designed beautiful floral decorations and ordered a fantastic cake. She’s booked a choir and hired some very special staff to serve the drinks. Mr. Johnson is nervous about his speech, but is determined to make things go with a swing. The best man has some juicy anecdotes with pictures that the groom would prefer us not to see. There are messages of support from friends and family. And Tom, in his speech, remembers those who cannot be here and asks us not to forget their contributions to the happy event. Be prepared to enjoy yourself and expect a few surprises! Mentor: Gemma Kerr, High Hearted Theatre

OUR STREET OUR STAGE
7:30pm, starting at Clothes Factor’s car park Join us for Assemble Fest’s closing event, a celebration of one of Hull’s most diverse and independent communities. Our Street Our Stage tells the story of Newland Avenue through a collaboration between local residents and artists. The street will become the stage as we celebrate the area’s colourful heritage, music, residents and culture through a series of promenade music, dance and visual scenes. The event is part of a larger heritage project that raises knowledge of and pride in Newland’s past, through new research and memories of residents archived online and in print. Prepare to be amazed as we recreate moments from Newland’s forgotten heritage, such as its origins as green fields, its connection to Hull Pals, the Sailor Home’s Whitsun Carnivals and the old Monica Cinema. The event will shine the spotlight on the area and pay tribute to those who make it truly great. For more information, pick up an Our Street Our Stage programme at the box office or visit assemblefest.co.uk/osos
16
Our Street Our Stage is a shared experience designed for all generations. It is completely free to enjoy and takes place outdoors from 7:30pm, so please dress accordingly. It takes the form of an accessible performance that requires a little walking and standing between scenes. Newland Avenue will be closed from Queens Road island to Alexandra Road from 6pm until 10pm on Saturday 3 June 2017. During this time there will be no access for vehicles, such as cars, motorbikes, taxis or buses. Emergency services will still be able to tend to emergencies in areas affected by the closure should you need to call one. Our Street Our Stage takes place on the street itself, bringing the avenue to life for the entire community. For more information, please visit assemblefest.co.uk/travel
17
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY This year’s additional activity has been split into four themes. This is just a taster, so we recommend exploring the avenue and getting involved in everything you spot!
POP-UP
This has been created as a tribute to the nature of Assemble Fest and its promise of performance where you least expect it. Throughout the whole of Newland there will be pop-up activity in the most unexpected places. Examples range from a scribble board at Scribes to temporary graffiti demos. We’re going to have a surprise Newland Gallery appearing down the street too, filled with local art. You can also expect to find random acts from award-winning poets, as well as musical mannequins inside businesses and windows.
18
SCIENCE ‘N’ MAGIC
Something exciting and unusual this way comes. Science Buskers from the University of Hull will perform weird and wonderful shows for brains of all ages in Clothes Factor’s car park. Meanwhile, brilliant and mysterious tour guides (watch out for them) will wander up and down the avenue, offering help and suggestions. Then there are the magicians and a traditional flea circus, bringing a bit of showbiz magic to Newland Avenue.
19
BIG FUN FOR ALL AGES
The Rosebery Community Garden will host face painters, stories and games for all the family. Come on down to play some Giant Jenga, become part of a tale of adventure with the Assemble Fest storytellers, and help us build an enormous fort throughout the day! We’ll also be running our annual Treasure Hunt from here: are you up for the challenge? The attractive Rosebery Gardens are also perfect for just having a good old sit down and relaxing between shows. Many people don’t even know they exist, so seize the opportunity to explore a lovely green space, accessible via the gate next to Newland Pet & Garden Supplies.
20
OUR STREET, OUR PARTY
Assemble Fest is a celebration of local artists, independent businesses and, most of all, people from near and far. With this being our year as the UK City of Culture, we are really going all out! The huge range of additional activity will be like an all-day party-palooza, with live music in most of the bars down Newland, and artists creating a community mural across the streets. There’ll be dancing and drumming, plus the usual huge selection of delicious food and drink at Newland’s many eateries, cafés and delis.
To end this year’s fab event, we will also be holding an Assemble Fest After Party at the brilliant Larkin’s, complete with food and live music. There’s a very special secret act headlining our end of festival bash, so make sure to get down there after Our Street Our Stage. Plus, did we mention we have our very own festival beer on tap? Go on, it’d be rude not to.
21
OUR SUPPORTERS Assemble Fest is made possible thanks to the support of numerous organisations and businesses. Through financial funding and in-kind donations, they help us to commission new work, collaborate with Newland traders, provide employment opportunities, bring music and art to the street, develop a brand and share our ethos with the public. We would like to thank these organisations for their essential support, without which there would be no Assemble Fest 2017.

It’s our ambition to make sure that anyone who wants to engage in Assemble Fest is able to, regardless of age, income or even free time on the day. This is why we run our very own Happy Hour each year. This takes the form of a pay-what-youdecide scheme, so if you see a show between 3pm and 4pm, you simply pop a coin or two into the bucket. No questions asked, no catches. The proceeds from Happy Hour then go toward funding worthy causes. Between 2014 and 2016, you helped us to raise over £1,000 for charities and community projects. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your valuable support, and please do tell your friends to get involved!
