MOUNTAINBIKE ADVENTURES
The MTB route in Haarby The mountainbike route in the forest of Trunderup, Haarby Assens Municipality has, in cooperation with Haarby Bicycle Club (HBC), established the MTB route. The forest of Trunderup in Haarby is a hilly area with a varied planting of broad-leaved trees and conifers. Here are open slopes and areas with woods, lakes and pastures, so there are plenty of opportunities to have fun. The marked trail varies between gravel, forest floor and grass. There are winding stretches through dense woods, more open stretches on broader trails, hairpin turns and a lot of steep climbs. The route is open for everyone and is free of charge. When using the trail in the forest of Trunderup, pay attention to the local roleplaying club using the forest every Wednesday from 18 to 21 and the first Saturday every month from 11 to 15. Parking: Available at the dog walking forest at Akkerupvej, Haarby.

ROUTE SUGGESTIONS
A TRIP TO HELNÆS The most beautiful trip along the waterline! Full day trip – length 47 km. 1 start – Assens Harbour: Take Sdr. Ringvej past Assens Rådhus (the council hall) in the old sugar mill to Thorøhuse, an old fishing village. 2 Thorø: Thorø is known for its pretty, pristine nature. There is a parking lot at Thorøhuse Forsamlingshus/Community Hall. You can take a walk on Thorø which, despite its name (ø means island in Danish), is a peninsula due to sanding up. The small bridge leads across a drainage canal from Noret, which is located further south. The island has an exciting history, interesting buildings and three colony houses that can be rented for school camps, family parties etc. It is possible to arrange guided tours on Thorø. There is a lot of sand on the trails, so the area is not suitable for biking. Continue along the biking route and experience the marvelous views and winding roads. On the other side of Little Belt, Aarø can be seen, and even further south you can see Als and the dam to Helnæs. 3 Saltofte: Continue to the village Saltofte. Along the beach road you’ll find many good viewpoints over Little Belt and a lot of opportunities to walk along the beach. 4 Sønderby Klint: This is a true eldorado for stone collectors. The cliff is almost 30 meters high and shaped by ice age sediments. On the cliff you can see numerous springs, steep and bare cliff walls, naked slopes during mass movement and more or less stable slopes and valleys covered in grass, herbs and thicket. 5 Slots Allé: Go left before Hagenskov through Slots Allé, the old castle bank with “the dungeon” and the old thatched watermill. Turn right on Helnæsvej and go past the timber framed farmhouse “Flenstofte”, built in 1746.
On the stretch towards the dam to Helnæs, you’ll pass Gl. Brydegaard and Gl. Avernæs Sinatur Hotel & Konference, where you have the opportunity to eat lunch, enjoy a lovely dinner or stay overnight. 6 Helnæs: Just past the road dam to Helnæs lies the Bobakkerne hills as a great embankment which, in summer, is dressed in a colorful cover of flowers. Helnæs is a very exciting peninsula. With its splendid nature, its active cultural and artistic life and its exciting past, there is plenty to immerse yourself in and look at. You can visit for instance Helnæs Gl. Præstegård (the old vicarage), Helnæs Antik (the antique shop) and Helnæs church. West of the town Helnæs you can find the great old meadow area Maden. Almost 300 hectares of meadows and fields lies behind the beach banks facing Little Belt. If you’re hungry, you can sate your hunger at Helnæs Kro. You can sleep over at Helnæs Camping and Helnæs Mølle Feriehuse. You can also hire a canoe from Helnæs Mølle and have a wonderful time in the water. Perfect for a family outing, or simply to enjoy the lovely natural scenery around the bay at Helnæs. 7 Hagenskov Castle, former Frederiksgave: Back on the mainland go left from Helnæsvej by Slots Allé. Continue through the beautiful castle grounds of Hagenskov castle from 1775, drawn by architect Rosenberg. The castle is recognized as one of the finest classicist buildings in the country. On the left you’ll see the big farm buildings area with the riding grounds in the middle. Here, quite a few scenes from the movie and TV-series “1864” was shot. By the avenue leading towards the main road lies the old smithy, a bit removed from the other buildings due to fire hazard. Go back to Å Strandvej and follow the route back to Assens, or take a short detour through Ebberup.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCES Manors, museums and unique nature! Full day trip – length 45 km. 1 Start – Assens Harbour: Take Kildensmindevej and continue by Brahesborgvej. 2 Galleri Sulegården: Take a short trip down Lundagervej to visit Galleri Sulegården. The farmhouse is a fine representative of the local Funen so-called “sule farms”. Sule is an old word for a thick, bearing pole. A sule farm has a special construction of raw timber, carrying the roof. This gives the room a very high ceiling and the possibility to make the corners of the house rounded. The gallery opened in September 1991 by the local artist Carl Henning Aarsø. Every year he shows 5 alternating exhibitions with art by both Danish and foreign artists. 3 Brahesborg Manor: Continue towards Gamtofte to Brahesborg Manor. In the middle ages, a small main house, Bispbo, was situated here, and in 1638 – 1656 it was rebuilt to the present manor house. Jørgen Steensen Brahe, the owner of Brahesborg in the 1600s, got the nickname “the little king of Funen”, as he owned quite a large number of manors. The name Brahesborg hails from his time as owner of the estate. In 1828, Brahesborg was bought by Supreme Court Lawyer F.W. Treschow and has since then been in the possession of his descendants. 4 Gamtofte Church: The church was built in the 12th century on granite blocks on a beautifully profiled footing. Over the years, the church has undergone big changes. The chancel has been elongated by approx 7 m to the east. On the south side of the chancel there is a granite ornamentation called “the playing angel”. The angel is playing a gige (a medieval instrument that looks like a mix of a lute and a violin), and this believed to be the oldest decoration showing a string instrument in Denmark. 5 Strøjer Samlingen/Strøjer Collection: Going from Gamtofte towards Søllested, you’ll find the Strøjer Collection, an exciting collection of cars in constant development.
Take a look at the cars and feel the atmosphere in one of the country’s most interesting private car collections. Note that the collection is only open every Tuesday in July and for groups by prior agreement. 6 Krengerup manor: Continue your trip towards Vedtofte and go by Nårupvej/Krengerupvej to the amazing Krengerup Manor. The manorhouse is surrounded by Krengerup Woods. Access to the park is free. You have to follow the marked routes. In connection with Krengerup Manor lies Hørvævsmuseet (the Flax Weaving Museum) and the Skoda Museum. - Flax Weaving Museum Flax Weaving Museum is a working museum with power looms, hand looms and old tools for manufacturing flax products. There is a yearly thematic exhibition and the café shows changing exhibitions of handicraft and a shop, selling their own products. - Skoda Museum The Skoda Museum shows a wide array of Skoda cars, from the first mass produced Skoda 420 Popular from 1937 to the Skoda Felicia from 1996, which was the first car made in cooperation with VW. 7 The Øksnebjerg stone: Continue at Dærupvej and go right at Odensevej. You’ll pass by the memorial stone for the battle at Øksnebjerg in 1535. From here there is a good view to the north over most of West Funen. To the south you can enjoy the view over Ebberup. 8 Kærum Church: On your way back, take a detour to Kærum Church, a large village church with 250 seats, dedicated to Saint Laurentius. The church has a roman chancel, and the nave has a groined vault from the 15th century. After a fire in 1981, unique frescoes depicting twining vines and leaves from around 1570 were discovered. The church has been thoroughly renovated in 1981-82.

Historical experiences A fantastic trip around Assens Full day trip – lenght 26,5 km.
Start - Assens Harbour 1 Torøhuse: Take Sdr. Ringvej past Assens Rådhus (the council hall) in the old sugar mill to Torøhuse, an old fishing village. 2 Thorø: You can take a walk on Thorø which, despite its name, is no longer an island but a peninsula, due to sanding up. The small bridge leads across a drainage canal from Noret, which is located further south. The Island has an exciting history, interesting buildings and three colony houses which can be rented for school camps or family parties. It is possible to arrange guided tours on Thorø. There is a lot of sand on the trails, so the area is not suitable for biking. Continue along the route and experience the marvelous views and winding roads. On the other side of Little Belt, Aarø can be seen, and even further south you can see Als and the isthmus to Helnæs. 3 Å Strandvej: Leads to a lovely beach outside the camping ground situated at the former beach hotel. 4 The dungeon at the castle hill: Further out, the route turns right through the castle avenue. You can take a trip to the big castle hill and see the old dungeon on top of the hill. Here, bishop Jacob Erlandsen was held prisoner in 1259. 5 Hagenskov Castle, former Frederiksgave: Continue through the beautiful castle grounds with Hagenskov castle from 1775, drawn by architect Rosenberg. Go left at Prinsevej, named after Prince Frederik VII, who was the governor of Funen, before he became king. He used Hagenskov, then called Frederiksgave, for summer residence and used to stroll here with his lady, Countess Danner.
6 Spinderhuset: On your way to Ebberup you’ll find Spinderhuset on your right. It was a gatehouse at the avenue to Hagenskov. From Prinsevej turn first to the left and immediately after to the right across the railway between Assens and Tommerup. Today you can ride a railway bike along the tracks. 7 Spinning School: The route goes by Ravnekærvej. In number 48 there once was a spinning school from the time when flax production had its golden age on Funen in the early 1800s. Visit the Flax Weaving Museum at Krengerup to learn more. 8 Gamtofte Church: Go straight across the junction at Odensevej and continue through Voldbro to Gamtofte church, a 12th century church with a number of fine details. You can, among other things, see the beautiful modern window panes by artist Peter Brandes. They lend a special and atmospheric light to the church room. 9 Memorial stone: Opposite the church stands a memorial stone for a flight crew of 8 men, killed in a plane crash in May 1944. The propeller of the plane stands by the stone. The Lancaster plane had not put mines around Kiel as planned, but was shot down by Luftwaffe and crashed in the vicarage garden and left a huge hole, which can still be seen. The vicarage burned to the ground along with two thatched farmhouses, and the church roof was badly damaged. 10 Brahesborg: Here you pass by the Brahesborg Manor on your right, built as a renaissance castle in 1656 by Jørgen Brahe, and rebuilt to a classicist style in 1756. Take a detour through the breeding grounds and note the stripes in the paving just outside the manor house. These are serf stalls. Every farm had its own stall, so the lord’s bailiff could check whether all the serfs had shown up for work. 11 Gallery Sulegården: In Lundager, you find Gallery Sulegården. The farmhouse is a fine representative of the local Funen sule farms. A sule farm has a special construction of raw timber, carrying the roof. This allows for a high ceiling and the possibility to make the corners of the house rounded. Follow the route back to Assens.

CULTURE AND NATURE Churches, viewpoints and gallery Full day trip - lenght 26,7 km Start - Assens Harbour 1 Mariendal Beach: Right after the harbor lies the Mariendal Beach with bathing jetty’s. Continue down Mariendalsvej along the “silver coast” of Assens, the new beautiful villa neighborhood with a view to Baagø. 2 Aborg: Aborg is from old times a big and meaningful village with many farms and houses. By Aborgvej you can make a small detour to Aborg Beach, where there is a pretty jetty. The cycling route continues towards Tvingsbjerg Lighthouse. Immediately you cannot see a lighthouse, since fired consists of a front light in a private residence at the beach and a back light by Baunet further into the county.
In Sandager Church a Madonna/Virgin Mary statue can be found, cut by Claus Berg in the beginning of the 1500s. Go right of Sandager Kirkevej, and right across to Middelfartvej to Barløse Church of Langemosevej and Barløsevej. 6 Barløse Church: High above the landscape lies the church, which is from the 1100s and one of the first Romanesque churches built. Barløse Church on its hilltop is also an official sea mark/ navigation mark. From the church, you can make a small detour to Barløseborg Golf. From Barløse Church go down the Langsted alley, here from the top of ridge you can enjoy the view over the Little Belt. Turn right of Bæringvej and thereafter to the left of Barløsevej.
3 Aborg Nor: (only a bicycle path) Further on you will pass the dam and the pumping station by Aborg Nor (Aborg Cove). Puge Mølle Å runs into the Little Belt here. During the Viking Age, you could sail up on Puge Mølle Å, and the name Aborg (a castle) shows that there used to be a castle, at least at the south side, but there have also been found ruins on the northern side. The dam was established in 1913 to prevent flooding with saltwater from the Little Belt. The cove have a rich birdlife and there have been observed species like eagles, snipe, sandpiper and different ducks and geese.
7 Puge Mill: Right before you come to the old ford Salbrovad lies Puge Mill-farm, Barløsevej no. 2. From the road, you can get a glimpse of the old half-timbered building that houses the watermill. Puge Mill has existed since the 1500s. Continue to Salbrovad and turn left of Middelfartvej towards Assens.
4 Baunet: By Baunevej turn right. On the left hand, you find the beacon with shelter and a fireplace on the top. At the foot of the beacon you find a good picnic area with tables and benches, as well as a playground. On the other side of the road lies Tvingsbjerg back light, a black painted tower. In the whole area around the river valley a variety of vegetables like asparagus, onions, strawberries, peas, potatoes, cabbage and corn are cultivated. It is sold from Torup Bakkegård on Middelfartvej a bit north of Sandager.
9 Brahesborg: The road goes through the estate farm, and in the yard, there is a great view of the main building from 1656 with the names Jørgen Brahe and Anna Gyldenstjerne. The Renaissance house got rebuilt in classical style in 1756. Drive left of Brahesborgvej and notice the beautiful suspension bridge above the moat.
5 Sandager Church: From the hilltop on the way can you see the whole Puge Mølle Ådal area with both Sandager and Barløse church. The spire on Sandager Church was put up as sea mark/navigation mark by Fyr- and Vagervæsenet.
8 Holevad Church: On the left hand lies Holevad Church, which most likely started out as a wooden church. From Middelfartvej drive down Bækagervej and Jørgen Brahesvej to Brahesborg.
10 Gallery Sulegården: In Lundager, you will find Gallery Sulegården. The farmhouse is a fine representative of the local Funen sule farms. A sule farm has a special construction of raw timber, carrying the roof. This allows for a high ceiling and the possibility to make the corners of the house rounded. Follow the route back to Assens.

THE VISSENBJERG AREA Adventures for the whole family Full day trip – length 35 km. 1 Start - Vissenbjerg Storkro: Go left at Søndersøvej and continue ahead. On your right you’ll find the parking lot for Vissenbjerg Terrarium and Vissenbjerg Hills. 2 Vissenbjerg Terrarium: This Zoo is a special Zoo with one of Scandinavia’s largest collections of reptiles, amphibians, scorpions, spiders, insects and so on. 3 Vissenbjerg Hills: Here, in the highest area of Funen, the glaciers of the Ice Age have left a large area with towering hills, steep slopes and deep ravines. By “Udsigten” (The Viewpoint) you’ve reached 129 meters above sea level, which is a lot by Danish standards. Here is a wonderful view towards Brændholt Bjerg and Frøbjerg Bavnehøj. 4 Lilleskov Brickworks: Continue towards Tommerup Stationsby. Take a trip down Lilleskovvej and take a look at Lilleskov Brickworks. This small museum was established in 1985 to preserve and run the brickworks as a museum. It is only open a few days during the year, but groups can visit by prior agreement.
5 Nature Playground Galaksen in Nårup: The trip takes you onwards to the village of Nårup, which boasts the fine Bystævne Galakse – a natural playground, established by a phenomenal volunteer effort and really worth a visit. Along with the village hall it now makes up the village’s common rendezvous, where both locals and guests can enjoy themselves. There is a football field, aerial runway, playground, two petanque fields, a fireplace and tables with benches. A nice and pleasant place to eat your packed lunch. 6 Denmark’s Bird Zoo From Nårup, take Skovvej straight ahead. You’ll pass by the most beautiful and idyllic bird park in Denmark.
In the park you can see 800 different birds from all over the world – storks, ostriches, parrots, owls and various swimming birds, just to mention a few.
7 Frøbjerg Bavnehøj – the highest point on Funen: Continue to Frøbjerg and climb Frøbjerg Bavnehøj (beacon hill), Funen’s highest point at 131 meters. From the top of the beacon hill there’s a great view over Funen. The landscape was shaped during the Ice Age by moving glaciers. In the days of old, beacons (big fires) were lit around the country to communicate and send warnings. The hill is a part of a characteristic dead ice landscape. The hills are flat on top with very steep sides and distinctive meltwater gorges. The 12 hectares area around Frøbjerg Bavnehøj is owned by the Danish Nature Agency and was protected in 1947. It consists of two hills; the beacon hill at 131 meters and a smaller hill at 122 meters. At Frøbjerg there is a memorial grove for the victims of the German occupation and several other memorials as well. In the old ice house at the bottom of the hill there is a small exhibition, only open in the summer, about the history of the beacon hill. Frøbjerg was named after the god of fertility, called Frej/Frøj. In ancient times Frøbjerg was a holy place, where the people held an annual sacrificial feast every spring. At the small hill there is a festival field, where Frøbjerg Festspil since 1986 has performed outdoor theatre plays. Every year, the plays attracts more than 25.000 visitors. Until 1910, the hills were covered in grass with no tree stands, and were used for grazing. The Beacon Hill Society planted the first of the present trees in 1911-12, and since then, many more have been planted. They are regularly cut to maintain the exceptional view. Today, the hills are grazed by sheep, helping to keep trees and scrubs under control.

ISLAND TRIP VISIT BAAGØ
Baagø is the only inhabited island in Assens municipality – there are 25 inhabitants on the small island in Little Belt, about 30 minutes sailing time from Assens. Baagø can be blustery and has a harsh climate in winter, but it is quite simply idyllic here in spring and summer. An obvious destination for a day trip for adults and children alike. Baagø is located in a bird protection area, so there are good opportunities to study birds, for instance from the two bird watching hides. Baagø offers flat bicycle routes with a view to the Little Belt, Funen and Jutland. The route takes you through the island village with its well-preserved farms and into beautiful natural surroundings. There are several minor tracks, encouraging you to leave your bike behind, as you explore the island by foot. Bike rental Bikes can be rented by the self-service at the harbour. There are 30 bikes for adults and 20 bikes for children. Put the money in the box, take a bike and leave it at the same spot after use. Price: 20 DDK. per bike, trailer 5 DDK. Phone: +45 64712527.
Transport to Baagø You reach Baagø by ferry from Assens harbour. The trip takes about half an hour. The ferry can hold approx 50 passengers and a small number of cars. You can make a reservation at +45 64714142. To see departure times and get more information about Baagø, see www.assenshavn.dk/baagøfærgen and www.visitassens.dk. Baagø Ferry Baagø Lighthouse Baagø City In the middle of the island lies the idyllic and well maintained Baagø City, which dates back to the 1200s. The original “city plan” is preserved with big farms on both sides of the broad city road. There has been no real soil replacement, but five of the farms moved out of the city due to fire or lack of space. Over the years there have been different service functions on the farms like: merchant, blacksmith and smithy, which today are gone but the buildings are still there.
The Church Baagø church was built in 1861 and located here so the count of Wedellsborg, who had made a major financial contribution, could have a clear view of it. Inventory and the decoration are simple, but a few things stand out, for example the rich ornamented chandeliers as well as the ship “Fredericus Quartus”, which was given to the church by a person from Copenhagen, as amends for the Baagø girl he “abducted” from the island.
TROLLEYCYCLING EXPERIENCE NATURE IN A NEW WAY
A DIFFERENT KIND OF ADVENTURE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY From april to October it is possible to go trolleycycling all the way from Tommerup St. to Assens, a stretch of app. 30 km. You can ride from Assens, Glamsbjerg and Tommerup. On the way, you can for instance enjoy the view of Dreslette Church, the Helnæs Bay and the old fishing village Torø Huse. Trolley cycles are easy to tread. There’s room for three or four people on the cycle, and there’s even room for luggage and supplies. You can also buy food on the way. Along the railway you can find picnic areas with tables and benches. To ride a trolley cycle you must be at least 15 years old, and to rent it you must be 18. There are special rules for crossing roads – you will get the information when you rent the cycle. The trolley cycle must always be taken back to the starting point after use. The lush landscape can be enjoyed in peace and quiet from the trolley cycle without any traffic problems. Should you wish to stop and rest, you can do it anywhere you feel like it. The trip takes you through the prettiest Funen nature with open fields and little woods.

The Funen bike routes Visit one of the finest cycling destinations in the Nordic region – BIKE ISLAND In the heart of Denmark lies Fyn – a large, green and cycle-friendly island that is just waiting to be explored. We call Fyn and the Archipelago BIKE ISLAND, because with its 1,200 km of signposted cycle routes, the region gives cyclists of all ages the chance to explore widely varied cycling terrain: everything from flat stretches close to the coastline to hilly roads winding their way between fields and areas of woodland, and through idyllic villages and market towns. Take your bike “island hopping” and discover the special way of life on the numerous small islands scattered around Fyn, or explore the delights of the bike-friendly city of Odense, which features both centuries of history and modern metropolitan life with a strongly beating pulse. Fyn and the Archipelago have actually been awarded the title of “UCI Bike Region”. This is a title that the UCI (International Cycling Union) confers on towns, cities and other destinations that provide particularly good conditions for cycle tourism, along with the capacity to attract and hold major cycling events. Fyn and the Archipelago are perfect for all kinds of cyclists: cycling families, MTB enthusiasts and road racers alike.
