Advancing Agile Mindsets ‘Enhancing organizational agility through our mindset’

https://getagilemindsets.com/agility-magic

Why has the Advancing Agile Mindsets Suite been created? These resources have been developed to help people discover how to integrate agile thinking and collaborative behaviours in the workplace. Enabling us as individuals, and in the groups and teams we are part of, to enhance business agility in a VUCA world. Exploring collaboration in groups and teams is a relatively easy concept and you can read more on this on getCollaborating.com however talking about the subject of mindsets can be a little more tricky, exciting, intriguing and sometimes confusing! There are enormous BENEFITS to be gained, so our mission has been to provide a way to help people bridge the gap of knowledge and understanding, to become curious, making this critical subject accessible, insightful and even fun for all that care to explore. These resources enable a group or team to take the first step in exploring their behaviour and thinking, and in doing so begin to recognise how the way we think, the language we use and the actions we take are all influenced by our mindset.

Mindsets - what are they and why knowing about them matters? Our 'thinking’, our mindset is a product of the culture and experiences we have been exposed to - home, education, community, work etc. These experiences influence the assumptions, beliefs and values we hold, the 'picture' we have of the world and the way we turn up in the workplace. Over time, and with broader experience our mindset may begin to evolve or change, providing new ways of thinking and exploring the world of business. Our mindset influences us in several ways: • Our ability to perceive complicated and complex systems • The actions and language we use • How we communicate with each other • The way in which we take in and respond to information, especially ‘change’ and managing dilemmas • How we problem solve and make decisions • How we reflect and critically think, to continuously learn and develop Becoming more agile in our thinking means we can ADAPT and learn more readily, widen the options available to us and others. This will enable more informed and insightful decisions and actions as the future unfolds.

Why Agility Magic is an ideal first intervention In less than 15 minutes explore the behaviours and mindsets at play in your own organization (or group) with the unique Agility Magic cards, which help you identify where the organization could be exposed and where it is doing well. This has repeatedly proven to be a rapid and effective first insight into how an organization (or group) is operating. It looks at themes such as the language at play, how well people are supported and what’s the prevailing culture – is it more “command & control and blame” or “a safe place to learn, innovate and grow”?

Getting Started Using Agility Magic

Agility Magic Card Intervention ‘Enhancing organizational agility’ Run a 15-minute card intervention using the Agility Magic cards enabling a group to quickly explore the behaviours, language and thinking that is driving the organization today. This helps people explore healthy and toxic behaviours that may be experienced. 1. Explore what we perceive. 2. Do any behaviour(s) ‘jump-out’ more than others and 3. What behaviours might ‘jump-out’ during times of Organizational stress. Finally identify the behaviour or attitude the group would like to see ‘more of’ or ‘less of’ to enhance organizational agility.

Raising awareness of the language and behaviours we see around us.

Reflect-in-action: how is the organization operating today? Purpose: To explore the behaviours, language and thinking prominent in the organization today. Typical Time: perspective.

One Deck of Agility Magic Cards has enough cards for two people (25 cards each) Capture insights on the optional A1 Agility Magic – Distributed Poster and/or the A4 Scoresheet.

Also available for free download. You can print for yourself or purchase printed versions from the site directly. NB: As you engage in the different steps of this intervention we suggest you take a photo to capture the results. https://getagilemindsets.com/agility-magic

Step 1 – Explore a typical day Bring-to-mind the organization you would like to explore. Consider what that looks and feels like today. Sort and place the cards face up, to form the pattern of a pyramid (as illustrated in the Poster ‘Agility Magic – Distributed’ Place the cards that describe what you see ‘less of’ to the left and ‘more of ‘to the right. We encourage you to follow your initial instincts and not ‘overthink’ your response. (You can amend later if you want to do so) Step 2 – Early insight Keeping the card in the same location and remaining face up. Consider “Do any cards stand out more than the others?” Identify this by placing the blue game piece(s) on the card(s). Step 3 – Stressful times Now consider “When the organization (or group) is in times of stress which card(s) now stands out more than the rest?” Place the orange game piece(s) on the card(s). “Is there a relationship between any of the cards?” and be curious “what might that mean?”

Step 4 – Time to act Next, keeping the cards in the same position turn all the cards over so the text is face down. Next, look closely at the number of cogwheels (the gear mechanism) on each card. You will see between 1 and 5 cogwheels on the back of each card. •

A low number of cogwheels represents more hindering behaviours that may be at play and holding the organization back. A high number of cogwheels represents more enabling behaviours at play and the more likely the organization is operating in a more agile, emergent and purposeful way.

You may wish to capture this information by taking a photograph. Alternatively, you could take note of the card IDs on the text side, and record these in the scoresheet.

Next Steps If the Agility Magic intervention proved insightful for the organization, either of the following interventions create the opportunity to explore a little more deeply. They explore the thinking and behaviour, each having a slightly different focus. Getting into the right Gear! ‘Transform the wisdom of the organization’ Imagine your group or organization has access to different ways of operating (its Agility Gears), and you would like to use the most effective way of working depending on the environment, context and workload. We can think of this as a five-speed gearbox. One of the five gears (the behaviours and attitudes at play) is going to be more helpful than the other four. Which one depends on the context you are working within.

https://getagilemindsets.com/agility-magic

Why might you care? What if you didn't know about all the gears available to you? Might that slow you down, or in extreme cases, cause you to stall or even damage the engine, because you were in the ‘wrong’ gear! Do groups and organizations' stall or damage themselves? Yes, all the time! This is occurring every day in many organizations across the globe. We are seeing evidence that the old ways of working are starting to fail all around us. It will be those who discover the full range of their Agility Gears that stand a far better chance of success and growth, or maybe just survival would do for now for those at risk. If the group is ready to deepen its thinking, reflection and enquiry skills, consider using the Agility Gears Board Game with up to 4 players. These resources have been informed by the work of Robert Kegan, Bill Joiner, Robert J. Anderson and many others working in the field of adult development.

Accelerating Collaboration Everywhere® ‘Transform the wisdom of Groups’ If enhancing dialogue and collaboration is more appropriate at this time, take a look at the Navigating Collaboration Board Game. This introduces elements of mindsets, motivation and relationship behaviours in an accessible intervention for up to 8 players.
