My kids are crazy over the latest boy band “Mindless Behavior” just as I was crazy over New Edition! Their group name is really thought provoking when you think on it. Mindless Behavior. The famed organization, United Negro College Fund, coined the phrase, “A Mind is a terrible thing to waste.” Even more we are reminded of “mind over matter”. These are all indicative of the power of the human mind. Still many of us operate in mindless behavior everyday, most of the day. We hit autopilot or cruise control and trample through our lives like the zombies off Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. We actually operate with mindless behavior in our finances, relationships, eating habits and even in our daily drives to and from home. Our society has adopted such a casual, relaxed attitude about most things important that if not careful we transfer that same mind set into our life decisions. Life calls for us to engage fully. To engage fully we must make our minds mind.
That can be easier said than done, making our minds mind. Our thoughts are simply a product of the information, images or ideas that we are feeding on. If your information, images and ideas are negative, your behavior will follow suite. Garbage in, garbage out. Let’s look briefly at the prodigal son in Luke. Jesus leaves us some great nuggets in this parable about being lost and in the reward of returning to Father’s house. If we look closely at the actions of the prodigal son, all of his actions were based on his mindset. He thought he knew better than his father and demanded his inheritance prematurely. He must have fantasized about what he thought was better on the other side. Just like we do from time to time. This was a time for him to put his mind in check. We know how the story pans out. He leaves, losses everything and is starving. Here’s where he changes his course with his mind, Luke 15:17, he mentally shifted his thoughts from where he was to where he wanted to be. He says to his self, putting his mind in check, “I can still return home, I will repent to my Father and become a servant; even that will better than this.” He put his mind in check and the very things that he thought turned into the the very things that he did! Transitioning our thoughts transitions our actions. We must exercise our truth conscience and take advantage of our ability to make our minds mind!
Put your mind in check. We all daydream and our thoughts can take us to places we should not be. Censor your thoughts when that happens. Literally say out loud: “STOP” and say what your truth is or should be.
