Prosper and Martine Assouline Founders, Chairman & CEO
After twenty years of creating the finest in illustrated books, we turned our attention toward the spaces surrounding them. We launched our first Assouline flagship in London, an art deco–inspired furniture collection, and we designed contemporary libraries for private homes, hotels, and places of interest where those who enjoy our books may find themselves. Collecting books is our lifestyle, and the titles we present in our collection each year add beauty, inspiration, and education on all the themes that captivate us. As we look ahead, our hope is that our books continue to inspire and enhance the spaces they inhabit, and that those spaces, in turn, become as thoughtful as the books themselves.

JEAN-MICHEL FRANK
I don’t work in centimeters but in millimeters. JEAN - MICHEL FR ANK
Over the course of the 1920s and 1930s, Jean-Michel Frank, the self-made man of design, invented his own unique style that became a benchmark of minimalism, daringly new for the time. Collaborating with the best artists, including Alberto Giacometti and Christian Bérard, Frank designed interiors for patrons such as Marie-Laure and Charles de Noailles, Nelson Rockefeller, and Elsa Schiaparelli. Just like the timeless little black dress, many of Frank’s furnishings still have the power to transform a space with understated elegance and continue to inspire today. MARIA BY CALLAS
I think I can truthfully say that I am my own sternest critic. And as one grows older, one becomes more and more exacting. MARIA CALL AS, THE SUNDAY TIMES
Callas? She was pure electricity. LEONARD BERNSTEIN
I consider myself privileged because I have been able to bring truth from the soul and the mind, give it to the public, and have it accepted. MARIA CALL AS, OPER A MAGAZINE
Everything I have to say is in the music. It is all there in my records. MARIA CALL AS
Of course I am difficult. An artist who tries sincerely to meet the demands of operatic music must work under extraordinary tension. Great music cannot be achieved without hard work and high standards. MARIA CALL AS, LIFE
Decades after the legendary prima donna left the scene forever, filmmaker Tom Volf fell in love with Maria Callas. He traveled the globe to interview Callas’s closest friends and colleagues, who opened their collections, unveiling a trove of previously unknown photos, many of which came from Maria’s own albums. Composed with the support of many of Maria’s loved ones, including Nadia Stancioff, her longtime best friend, and Georges Prêtre, her favorite conductor, who for the first time in forty years agreed to collaborate on a book about her, Maria by Callas, the definitive, unique product of countless hours of research, offers a new perspective, a personal album as Maria herself would have presented, invoking the diva’s own voice. MATT BLACK: Hi Larry, let’s discuss your film Marfa Girl. You mentioned earlier that your friend Christopher Wool invited you to Marfa? LARRY CLARK: Christopher is one of my oldest and dearest friends. He lives with his wife, Charline von Heyl, also a very fine painter, in Marfa, Texas. Well, they live in New York, but many years ago he went to Marfa as an artist-in-residence. During the Second World War, there were 300,000 German prisoners of war kept in America, and a large number were kept in Marfa at this army post. So Donald Judd, the great American sculptor, was funded by the Dia Art Foundation to buy the army fort and make all the old barracks and mess halls into permanent galleries. John Chamberlain has a gallery there with all forty of his great Texas sculptures from the ’70s. Anyway, Donald Judd comes, so now the art crowd comes to Marfa, this little tiny town in west Texas in the middle of nowhere. Now, you have to fly to Dallas, take a plane to El Paso, and then rent a car and drive for four hours to Marfa. It’s eighty-seven miles from the Mexican border. It’s like the ’50s there. You have the cowboys, the ranchers, the white people, and the Mexican Americans, who have been there forever. Now you have the art crowd coming in. The Chinati Foundation art museum was founded after Donald died, so you have tourists coming in. Plus they picked Marfa as the border patrol headquarters, so there’s these swarms of border patrol guys all over town who are sixty-eight miles from the Texas border with nothing to do except fuck with the residents. There’s a curfew—eleven o’clock at night the kids have to be in, and if they’re not in, the border patrol tackles them under the pretext that they may be illegals and takes them to the sheriff, who has to call their parents and bring them home. Also, they paddle kids in school— there’s corporal punishment from kindergarten through high school. Now, in most states, that’s a felony; you can’t hit kids. But this is west Texas. Now, Christopher Wool and his wife Charline bought a place there and they have a studio there, so when they’re not in New York, they go down there and they paint and chill out. So Christopher invites me down. A new festival called CineMarfa started two years ago. It was just a tiny festival, and they showed no wave films from the ’70s, made in New York as a reaction to the new wave films in France by Truffaut and Godard. Now, I had just rediscovered this film I made in 1968 when I was doing my first book, Tulsa. I went down to Oklahoma with a movie camera for a few days, and I filmed everybody. Back then I used a Euro, which was like a Nagra, so it’s reel-toreel tape—it’s a portable, but it’s like a suitcase. I used some stills from the film for a couple of pages of my book, but it just sat on the shelf; I never had a use for it because I was telling stories. But I rediscovered it and I watched it, and it’s amazing because all the people in Tulsa come to life. Christopher said, “Why don’t you come down to the festival and show the Tulsa film, and while you’re at it, show Ken Park in Wassup Rockers?” So I go down there and I show the films. Wassup Rockers is being shown the last night. The auditorium holds about 100 people, and it’s full, but it’s all the art crowd, older people, and it looks like New York. It’s the first year of the festival, so they’re still trying to figure out a way to get the locals interested. But anyway, Wassup Rockers was a film about fifteen-year-old Latino kids in South Central trying to just survive and not be gangbangers and smoke pot and wear baggy clothes and shave their heads and be all hiphop. They wanted to be punk rockers, wear tight clothes, and skateboard, which was unheard of in the ghetto. They wore such tight clothes because they were so poor. They called it “dressing young”: When they were fifteen, 33

CHAPTER 5
JEFF KOONS
MATT BLACK: Let’s talk about where you grew up and your early influences. ERIK PARKER: I grew up in South Texas, right outside of San Antonio. Texas is a land where everything’s big and extreme and hot; colors are bright. It’s influenced by skateboarding and punk rock. MATT BLACK: Did you have people around you doing art? ERIK PARKER: No, there was no art at all, not even graffiti. You can’t do graffiti in the state of Texas, especially back then—they’d just shoot you. And there was no access to museums, really. What I saw in terms of art was Mad magazine and comic books. Not until later on, when I was twenty, did I see any kind of real art. MATT BLACK: At what point did you decide to make art? ERIK PARKER: What happened was I got in some trouble with the law. I was a high school dropout. My probation would end if I got a GED and got into a community college, so I did that and went into art. I thought it was going to be easy, and it looked really cool. Turns out it’s not easy at all. It’s like the hardest thing you can think of. If you know what you’re doing, you’re probably not doing it right. You’re dealing with magic in a way, or trying to create fake magic. Trying to capture a viewer with nothing but an object is pretty tough.
Ratquo mo conse excea des aut occatia nati nobit doluptu ritiatur? Quidus, ut ipiet odit veri ommos consequo deste odis eicillam doluptatius, cor am, omnit oditiat. MATT BLACK: Let’s talk about the visual world you have created: the plants, the words, the vivid colors, the characters. ERIK PARKER: The key is color and this kind of wavy cartoony language that comes probably from Crumb and underground comic books. Maybe the graffiti world. I could talk about what inspires me, but what comes out is stuff that looks like this. Those characters have just been in my head forever. The parameters have been set up, and they have to operate within these lines, so you know they won’t be going wacky all over the place; it’s very structured. And that’s the area where I freestyle. If we were making a song, that would be like the solo. It’s a lot like life—we’re all fuckin’ probably really nuts and would like to just take off our clothes and go running and screaming, but we have boundaries, and society makes us operate within them. I create these little structures to go fucking nuts inside of. It’s like the future in a way: creating your own world with things that we can already identify with. MATT BLACK: Even with all this craziness, most of your paintings have a classic composition. ERIK PARKER: Henri Rousseau. No one’s made anything like that ever since his jungle paintings. I was completely inspired by him.

Her patients call her the Magician.

LE POINT
Nadia Volf is the Ear Whisperer. MADAME FIGARO
A telltale nonchalance prevails among Parisian girls— a dash of lipstick, worn-in jeans, laissez-faire hair— so it’s not surprising that the French apply the same approach to maintaining their health. Paris-based acupuncturist Nadia Volf M.D. says a few simple lifestyle rules can boost immunity, aid digestion, and regulate moods.
C MAGAZINE
Since ancient times, the human outer ear, or auricle, has been considered a tool for healing. Various points on the auricle serve a double function, providing information on the condition of the internal organs and other parts of the body, while at the same time serving as a control panel that makes it possible to “change the settings” when there is a malfunction. Renowned European acupuncturist Dr. Nadia Volf, author of the Joël Robuchon cookbook Food & Life, delivers the secrets of her art in this presentation of her science of auriculotherapy, inherited from ancestral knowledge. LA CUCINA DI LUCA FANTIN
JUAN PABLO With a degree in art history and anthropology, nomadic Parisian photographer Aline Coquelle has always traveled the world—she has lived and worked in Central and South America, Asia, and Africa. She contributes to prestigious international publications, and shoots marketing campaigns for luxury brands. Coquelle works only with silver film in order to keep alive the magic of old-time photography, because she believes “saving tradition is the new revolution,” and her gelatin silver prints are sought by collectors worldwide. Her other books with Assouline are Palm Springs Style (2005); The Cartier Polo Games (2006); and Polo: The Nomadic Tribe (2009).
Winemaker, industry consultant, cellar advisor, speaker and visiting lecturer, Count Gelasio Gaetani d’Aragona Lovatelli is an eclectic and versatile authority on Italian and international wines, having traveled and worked in the U.S., South America, England, and the Far East. Inheriting from his maternal grandfather, Baron Raimondo Franchetti, a passion for wine, agriculture, and terroir, Gelasio studied agricultural sciences in Italy, attended the Wine & Spirit Education Trust in London, and gained industry experience working for Julius Wile & Sons in New York, L & P Antinori in Florence, Souverain Wines in California, and Calona Vineyards in British Columbia. Upon returning to Europe, he founded, together with his brothers, the renowned Argiano winery in Tuscany. A writer and raconteur, he has published several books, including Wine Notes (Luca Dotti, 2002), Walking on the Wine Side (Gribaudo, 2013), and Vini, Amori (Bompiani, 2014). He is also an Italian style and brand ambassador, bringing together tradition, passion, and experience in international strategy consultancy.

The Italian Dream is an escape into the effortlessly elegant Italian lifestyle, discovering hidden corners, savoring wine behind the private gates of family castles and vineyards, from the foothills of the Alps to the hill towns of Tuscany to the relaxed southern seasides.
THE THE
THE
ITALIAN DREAM
For more than three years, Aline Coquelle, the well-known globe-trotting photographer, and Count Gelasio Gaetani d’Aragona Lovatelli, a member of one of the oldest aristocratic Italian families, have followed the map of Italy’s best wines. This exclusive tour opens doors to the hidden treasures of Italy, introducing readers to a tribe of artistic and wine-loving amici, who share their passion for their country’s heritage and bounty.

influencers have all made the pearl necklace part of their wardrobes, each wearing it after their own fancy. A symbol of feminine purity, a sign of status and power, an emblem of tradition, a quintessential heirloom, an opportunity for reinvention, the pearl necklace has adapted, chameleon-like, across centuries to become an expression of changing ideals of womanhood and of a woman’s place in the world. In the most authoritative volume on the subject to date, The Pearl Necklace explores the legacy of these lustrous strands through fine art and fashion, with

With a degree in art history and anthropology, nomadic Parisian photographer Aline Coquelle has always traveled the world—she has lived and worked in Central and South America, Asia, and Africa. Her other books with Assouline are Palm Springs Style (2005); The Cartier Polo Games (2006); and Polo: The Nomadic Tribe (2009).

influencers have all made the pearl necklace part of their wardrobes, each wearing it after their own fancy. In the most authoritative volume on the subject to date, The Pearl Necklace explores the legacy of these lustrous strands through fine art and fashion, with an introductory essay by award-winning journalist and jewelry historian Vivienne Becker that reminds us why the pearl necklace has long been the ultimate object of fascination and fantasy.

Mattel is part of the world of dreams and imagination— dreams that will be transformed into reality through creative minds and hands.
ISBN: 9782843237355
“Innovation became a hallmark of Mattel operations,” said Mattel co-founder Elliot Handler in 1968. “We were unorthodox, venturesome—our people were willing to try new things. This quality, more than any other, has been the key to the company’s progress.” From its beginnings inside the garage of Harold “Matt” Matson to the development of global franchises, from He-Man to Monster High, Mattel is synonymous with play in almost every language. Mattel: 70 Years of Innovation and Play invites readers to enter its world of imagination and discovery, on a journey through seven decades of creativity. Celebrating a venturesome spirit and legacy of play that endure today, Mattel is a colorful tribute to the happiness of childhood and its enduring memories.
