The Master of Arts (M.A.) in School Counseling • • • • •

The Vision of our Programs of Study: to Graduate Leaders in the Field. The necessary coursework and fieldwork experiences are provided for students interested in seeking national certification through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) for the National Certified Counselor (NCC) and National Certified School Counselor (NCSC) credentials. Our programs are approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and meet Initial licensing requirements for School Guidance Counselor (PreK-8 or 5-12). Students may take an additional 6 credits (60 credits total) to satisfy coursework requirements that lead to the Professional License (Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) in school guidance counseling. Students are provided with the theoretical and practical skills and competencies that are required to be an effective school counselor who meets the diverse learning and behavioral needs of students in multi-cultural urban and suburban school settings. Theory, research, and practice are integrated in a sequential program. Specific competencies needed for counselors in the school setting include: problem solving, consultation and collaboration skills, knowledge of evidence-based prevention, and intervention strategies. Diversity, disability, multicultural, and school reform issues are central to implementation of national and state developmental counseling curriculum models and are imbedded in coursework and practicum experiences.

Coursework is coordinated with lab, pre-practicum, and clinical practicum experiences to provide the student with multiple opportunities to gain knowledge, and to develop, refine, and evaluate their counseling skills within a school setting.

Course of Study for the Master of Arts in School Counseling Initial License (Pre K-8 or 5-12) Candidates for the degree of Master of Arts in School Counseling are required to complete a rigorous 54-credit (16 course and practicum) program to develop systematically the knowledge and skills essential to demonstrate competence. For those seeking licensure, institutional endorsement for the Massachusetts Initial License for School Guidance Counselor (PreK-8 or 5-12) requires, at a minimum, successful completion of all listed courses or their equivalents (see prior information regarding waivers). Enrollment in some courses, including the practicum requires the prior approval of the Director of the School Counseling program and/or the completion of prerequisite course(s) beyond the required courses listed. A 75-hour non-credit pre-practicum is required by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The prepracticum requirement must be completed prior to the practicum.

Leads to dual licensing: Initial School Guidance Counselor License (PreK-8 or 5-12) and Initial School Social Worker/ Adjustment Counselor License (All Levels) School social worker/adjustment counselors work in schools providing counseling services to students on IEPs and to those with significant emotional, behavioral, and social issues. Counselors work closely with parents, outside agencies, and the juvenile courts, including child protective services. There is a shortage of licensed school social workers/adjustment counselors in Massachusetts and other states, as well as a shortage of D.E.S.E. approved programs. Certificates of Advanced Graduate Study (C.A.G.S.) in School Counseling Our Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (C.A.G.S.) options provide specialized knowledge and skills in specific areas of School Counseling. It is offered to individuals who hold a master’s degree in School Counseling or a closely related counseling field.
Students enrolled in some of these programs have an opportunity to develop an area of specialization that is related to their current work or future career goals. Students are typically enrolled in this program on a part-time basis and have up to 7 years to complete their course of study.
A customized course of study consisting of 21-30 graduate credits is developed in consultation with the graduate program director.

Courses for Assumption Undergraduate Students The School Counseling Program offers Assumption College undergraduate students the opportunity to enroll in two graduate courses during their senior year. These graduate courses may be applied towards the Master of Arts (M.A.) in School Counseling. Students in any undergraduate major considering admission for the master’s program should consult with the Director of the School Counseling program during the spring semester of their junior year to discuss eligibility and application procedures and to plan a course
of study. With permission from the Director of the School Counseling program and the student’s advisor, students may take one (1) graduate class in the fall of their senior year and one (1) graduate class in the spring of their senior year. Undergraduate students who seek admission to the Master of Arts in School Counseling program must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in their major field of study and overall. Candidates must submit their complete application materials to the Office of Graduate Studies by the spring semester of their senior year to apply to the M.A. (M.A./C.A.G.S.) in School Counseling.

The Institute for School Counseling and School Psychology The Institute for School Counseling and School Psychology, through the School Counseling Program at Assumption College, one of the only such offerings in the nation, provides special advanced training experiences regarding new models and interventions to benefit current school counselors. Interactive workshops, designed for counselors who seek continuing education for re-licensure (PDPs and CEUs), are offered on campus throughout the year by recognized, nationally noted contributors in the field. The Institute also provides graduate students (who report it to be a highlight of their studies) the opportunity to interact with both current counselors and prominent contributors. All workshops are offered to Master’s, C.A.G.S., undergraduate students and faculty. Training sessions may be taken for graduate credit with additional course requirements. The primary goals of the Institute are to offer: 1. Professional training to enable professional counselors and psychologists to stay current with evidenced based practices; 2. On campus in-service training to teachers and school administrators relating to topics that enhance and advance the work of school counselors and school psychologists in implementing the Mass Model for Comprehensive School Counseling; 3. Out-reach consultation to schools seeking assistance with delivery of school counseling services and staff development.
