ennis players who grunt loudly when they hit the ball appear to have a competitive edge over their opponents, a study says. The noise accompanying a hard shot makes an opponent slower to respond and more likely to misjudge exactly where the ball is going -- so it is tougher to hit it back, said Canadian and American researchers. ‘’Conservatively, our findings suggest that a tennis ball traveling 50 miles per hour (80 kph) could appear 24 inches 2 feet (60 cm) closer to the opponent than it actually is,’’ said Scott Sinnett, an assistant at the University of Hawaii. The researchers tested their theory on students in a laboratory at the University of British Columbia, using sounds that were comparable in volume to grunts of tennis stars Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal. The results were published in the online issue of Public Library of Science ONE. Sinnett and his colleagues say there are several possible explanations for why grunting has an effect. Some professional tennis players try to judge the spin and velocity of a ball from the sound it makes hitting a racket, so a loud grunt would mask those clues, while also serving as a general distraction, the researchers suggested. Grunting is a controversial subject in tennis circles, with nine-time Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova having called it ‘’cheating pure and simple.’’ ‘’The study raises a number of interesting questions for tennis. For example, if Rafael Nadal is grunting and Roger Federer is not, is that fair?’’ Sinnett said. A Wimbledon match this year between Serena Williams and Portuguese teenager Michelle Larcher de Brito was described as a ‘’decibel Derby’’ for all the noise the players were making. Sinnett said the researchers now planned to look at whether the world’s top tennis players had developed strategies to mitigate the effects of their opponents’ grunts. (REUTERS)

FILIPINO JINS WIN WORLD POOMSAE TITLE 50 MANILA BULLETIN SPORTS DIGEST >>

he mood was light when brothers Jean Pierre and Brian Sabido and their teammate Anthony Matias prepared for their photo shoot. Clad in their white poomsae uniforms, the young athletes playfully made fun at each other as they practiced different taekwondo forms before demonstrating it in front of the camera. It was an entirely different atmosphere on that same gym a few months ago. Back in September, the three athletes were spending almost the entire day – from Mondays to Fridays – perfecting their routines for the then upcoming 5th World Poomsae Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. “It was like boot camp,” recalled the older Sabido, Jean Pierre, a native of General Santos City. “We spent two months training seven to eight hours

a day on weekdays under Korean coach, Master Jeong Tae-seong and our local coach Igor Mella.” Those grueling hours meant developing the power and strength of their kicks on their routines from 9 to 11 a.m., and polishing their synchronization from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sometimes, they added an extra hour executing the routines, before wrapping it up with squats and push-ups. There are eight poomsae routines to master. For someone who isn’t familiar with the sport, poomsae is a pattern of pre-arranged taekwondo moves consisting of blocks, strikes and kicks. According to academictaekwondo.com, “while performing a poomsae, the taekwondo practitioner uses his/her techniques to fight off imaginary opponents, attacking from different directions.” Categorized by techniques, composition and points of stress, a completion of poomsae can be achieved through hard training by observing the five steps namely: pattern, significance, practical use, self style and study, and completion. If you think contact sports like taekwondo and boxing are hard, think again. “Kailangang fluid yet explosive yung movements mo para maperfect mo yung poomsae,” the 27-year-old Jean Pierre says. “And sa case ng team event, which is the highlight of every poomsae competition, kailangang maganda yung synchronization ninyo.” Mastering the routines can be tough; perfecting the synchronization is a different story. Brian, 25, admits having dreams of their routines at night, especially during those two months when they were training for the world championships. There also came a point where he couldn’t get enough rest due to insomnia. “At the start of the year, nagti-training na naman kami. Yung training namin with our Korean coach was the hardest. It was physically draining, but mentally we were also being trained. Kaya we always say to ourselves that it’s all in the mind, or else bibigay talaga yung katawan namin,” Brian says. “Our Korean coach once told us, ‘If you want to win the world championship, you have to give up everything for this training,’” Jean Pierre recalls. “So during those times, isolated talaga kami. As in walang social life, puro training lang – umaga, tanghali, hapon, gabi.” The Sabido brothers and Matias finally

reaped the fruits of their labors last October when they bested powerhouse teams from Germany, Iran and China for the first team event gold medal in the world championships. Participated in by 446 athletes from 59 countries around the globe, the victory was sweet for the Jean Pierre, Brian and Anthony who could only finish sixth place last year. The trio also surpassed their bronze-medal feat in 2008. “It is definitely the highlight of our career so far,” Jean Pierre says. “Last year was an eye-opener. After winning bronze in the world championships in 2008, we got cocky. Hindi kami halos nagti-training together. Kaya yung performance level namin, bumaba.” Indeed, the squad suffered misfortunes in 2009, slipping to sixth place at the world championships and stumbling into third at the Laos Southeast Asian Games. “It was frustrating,” Brian admits. “We sacrificed a lot of things, but we didn’t get the results we wanted.” Aside from being away from their families, the three also gave up something to hone their craft. Jean Pierre quit as an exercise consultant, Brian took a leave of absence from work as a landscape architect, and Anthony missed classes as a graduating high school student. “Hindi rin naging madali sa akin,” says Anthony, 17, now a college freshman at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. “Kahit na approved ng parents ko yung pagiging member ko ng national team, hindi ko rin kailangang pabayaan yung school work ko.” The three athletes vowed to train harder after those painful losses last year. Aside from training under a Korean coach, the trio also joined the Philippine taekwondo team to Korea for a few weeks. “Nakakapagod, but it tested our determination. How far are we willing to endure pain in order to win for the country? We were pressured to deliver,” Brian said. “Gusto kong manalo kami pagkatapos nung nangyari sa amin last year,” Anthony added. The journey, indeed, was long and bumpy for Jean Pierre, Brian and Anthony, but it was all worth it. With poomsae not included in the November Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, the trio currently “enjoys” light training for now in preparation for their title-retention bid in the world championships in Russia on a date yet to be announced, as well as the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia late next year. “Defending our title at the world championships is very hard. Kaya kung nahirapan kami sa training this year, doble or triple pa siguro ng hirap ang dadanasin namin next year. Plus, kailangan naming bumawi sa SEA Games,” Brian says. “But for now, relaxed muna kami ng kaunti compared sa dati. Tuluy-tuloy pa rin naman ang training namin, pero at least ngayon, nakakapag-Facebook na kami,” Jean Pierre laughed.

NAKAKAPAGOD, BUT IT TESTED OUR DETERMINATION. HOW FAR ARE WE WILLING TO ENDURE PAIN IN ORDER TO WIN FOR THE COUNTRY? WE WERE PRESSURED TO DELIVER,” -- Anthony Matias
