ix years after his retirement from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), Alvin Patrimonio still plays an active role in the league as team manager of B-Meg Derby Ace, the only franchise he has played for during his professional career. As ‘TM’ of B-Meg Derby Ace (formerly Purefoods), he encourages the players to improve on their respective games and work harder in practice to achieve the team’s goal of winning another championship. “I’m the encourager. Of course, the respect they have given me will always be there. To the younger players, I’m the adviser. Sometimes, I also deal with their contract, managing the team,” the 43year-old Patrimonio said. His hectic job, however, does not stop him from going to the gym to keep in shape. Discipline has been the hallmark of his stellar career that started in the National

Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) where he played for the Mapua Cardinals. The 6-foot-4 power forward also saw action in the Philippine Amateur Basketball League or PABL (now PBL) and joined the PBA in 1988. Together with Jerry Codiñera, Jojo Lastimosa and Glenn Capacio, they formed a formidable Purefoods squad. In 16 PBA seasons in the PBA, Patrimonio was named Most Valuable Player four times, tying Ramon Fernandez’s record and a 10-time member of the Mythical First Team, 10-time PBA AllStar and was one of the PBA’s 25 Greatest Players. Patrimonio was also a four-time member of the national team that competed in the Asian Games, winning a silver medal with the first ever all-PBA team in 1990, a bronze medal in 1986 and 1998. Patrimonio admits he still misses the game. “Of course, I miss playing,” Patrimonio said. “Our group, the ex-pros, once in a while we have games. We’re still very in-demand, we’re being invited especially in the province. So I have to be in shape, still have to work out.” “Sometimes we have three straight games in a week. We travel to one province, back to Manila, and then province again. So it’s very hectic. As for the competition (in the PBA) there are times, crucial times of the games, I really miss those situations. But of course, I’m done with that,” he said. According to Patrimonio, he tries to encourage the B-Meg power forwards like Kerby Raymundo and Marc Pingris to practice the post-up move on a consistent basis. “I told them to just spend more time to improve their games.” Patrimonio considers himself fortunate to have played against the likes of Fernandez, Robert Jaworski and Abet Guidaben, all PBA pioneers. “We’re just grateful and blessed to have played against them. Our attitude then was to compete with the original batch. They have influenced us to reach our goals of making it to the PBA. Of course, when you’re in a pro league, you have to do all the sacrifice.” “It’s just total commitment. It’s not just inside the court, but outside as well. We know how to deal with the fans,” Patrimonio said. “The popularity of the PBA will always be there. They just have to adjust and improve, particularly on giving back to the fans, entertaining them because the new generations, they’re now the role models,” he added. What he learned from playing, Patrimonio tries to impart to his daughters, tennis players Christine (18) and Clarice (16). “I always tell them not to give up, stay positive. The attitude is there, the talent is there. The Lord has given them the talent, so they just have to have good attitude, and the results will be good as well,” he said. While admitting that he’s being encouraged to try his hand in coaching, Patrimonio said he wants to run for a government position in the near future. “Of course, our purpose here on Erath is to serve,” he said.
