SEARCH AND FIND ACTIVITY FOR SAMMY’S CLASS All 26 of Alpha Betty’s students are in the book Sammy Skunk’s Super Sniffer!

Print two copies of page 5 with small pictures of all the students. (The second copy will be used for the Concentration Game below.)

Below each student’s picture, there is a place to write the page number where you can find that student in Sammy Skunk’s Super Sniffer.

Turn through the book, page by page. Write down the page number where you first found each student! Did you find them all? (Did you spot Quentin Quokka on page 28?)

Bonus: If you have the book Xavier Ox’s Xylophone Experiment, you may use the second copy of the picture cards to play “Search and Find” with that book!

CONCENTRATION GAME (Best played with 2 or more players, but it also can be played alone!)

• Carefully cut apart the cards of Alpha Betty’s students on your two copies of page 5.

(You may save these cards to play the Concentration Game again when you do the activities for Xavier Ox: www.kanepress.com/AnimalAntics/XavierOx.html.)

• Next, carefully cut 26 plain, unlined, 3 x 5 index cards in half. Then glue the cards of Alpha Betty’s students to the index cards using a glue stick.

• Sort the cards into four stacks. Place both pictures for the A–G students in one stack.

Then place pictures for H–N in a second stack, O–T in a third stack, and U–Z in the fourth stack. Now you have FOUR SETS of cards to use for playing Concentration!

Use only one set at a time.

• Turn the cards in one set face down and mix them up well.

• Arrange the cards into a grid pattern (3 card rows x 4 card columns). With the A–G set and the H–N set, you will have two extra cards to put in a fourth row.

• The first player turns over any two cards. If they don’t match, that player turns them over again, being careful to keep them in their places. Try to remember which cards are where!

• The next player turns over two cards. If two cards DO match, that player “wins” that pair of cards and sets them aside in a personal stack. Keep going until you turn over two cards that do NOT match. Then it’s the next person’s turn.

• At the end of the game, the person who has the most pairs wins!

DOUBLE CHALLENGE: Put TWO sets of cards together, so you are playing with MORE pairs of cards! Now you will really need to concentrate!

SKUNK’S SQUASH SOUP

Makes 8 servings.

Juice of 1/2 lemon 1/2 teaspoon salt

In large 8 quart soup pot, stir fry for 6–8 minutes over medium heat:

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 Tablespoon butter

Cook over low heat for 40 minutes, until squash is very soft.

1 Tablespoon olive oil 1 large onion, chopped

Puree soup with stick blender in soup pot.

(If using regular blender, food processor, or food mill, allow mixture to cool before blending.)

2 ribs celery, sliced 1 carrot, sliced 1 Tablespoon curry powder

Reheat soup. (Soup should be thick, but it may need to be thinned with additional apple cider if it is too thick.)

Peel, remove seeds, cut in chunks, and add to soup pot: 1 large butternut squash

Add additional salt or pepper if needed.

2 apples (such as Granny Smith)

Just before serving, whisk in: 1/2 cup low-fat sour cream

Add:

Garnish with a sprinkle of chopped parsley or chives, and serve!

2 cups apple cider or juice 2 15 oz. cans chicken broth

Be sure to put this recipe in your Animal Antics recipe folder!

NOTE TO PARENT/TEACHER: Make sure children are not allergic to any of the ingredients in this recipe.
