Discussion Questions for THIS IS A WINDOW

1 At the front and back of the book are “ maps ”of the kids’ neighborhood What differences do you see on the maps from day to night?

2 There are clues in the maps to help you match the kids in the story to their houses Can you look closely at the story and see? Even the puppy has a hint!

3 What does the word “transform” mean? What’s an ordinary object (like a bowl or a table) that you have used in multiple ways to play pretend? Do you see an example of this in the book?

4. The artwork in this book is cut-paper collage. Do you know what collage means? What art materials do you need to make one? (*Hint: the author uses crayons and glue just like you!)

5. What is your most favorite fort you ’ ve ever made? Did you use your imagination, or objects, or both?

6. The “tree” is really a chair, and–oh no!–the Dino is stuck at the top. What pretend game do you think the boy is playing there?

7 The kids are neighbors What was a time where you met and played with a neighbor? How did that go?

Lauren Paige Conrad is a self-taught illustrator based in Asheville, NC She received a BS in textiles from the University of Georgia in 2008 before going on to study fashion design at FIDM San Francisco After working in product development and with small-scale textile studios, Lauren turned to illustration in 2016 Lauren works in cut paper, gouache, colored pencil, and Neocolor crayon. Lauren is the illustrator of Your One and Only Heart, written by Rajani LaRocca.
