Environmental design

Looking at ‘defensive architecture’ – an6-‐homeless design, crea6ng park sea6ng which cannot be slept on. A way design can be used to restrict people.

Again defensive architecture, this 6me restric6ng skateboarders, cyclists etc. by making the floor uneven.

Design which more subtly keeps people in line, e.g. queuing at a bus stop even though it has never been said that queuing is necessary

People oEen act very differently when entering art galleries, we are held back against the pain6ngs by a simple red line on the floor which causes groups of people to huddle right at the edge of the line, fearful of what might happen if they are to cross it.

A lot of environmental design is very subtle that we don’t even no6ce that are ac6ons are being controlled or manipulated in some way. Like when entering a shop without really thinking – what was it which drew you in, did you actually want to or was it liGle details about it which subconsciously lured you in?
