Note from the Editor: Dear readers, This is Christopher Au-Young writing to you as editor in chief of our very first issue of California Surf. The idea of doing a magazine based on interviews with local surfers, and exposes on So Cal beaches was very easy to conceptualize and even more fun to get to work on. Working with people who are passionate about surfing was the biggest draw to doing this; it goes to show that surfing is still a popular sport and should be encouraged especially amongst beach enthusiasts.

This issue we bring you feature articles on Laguna Beach, including interviews and photo exposes of models posing on the beach itself.

We hope you enjoy it and that it persuades you to visit this beach, which has much to offer anyone who is interested in surfing or just taking a stroll across its sandy shores.

Alli Breen is a comedian who lives in Los Angeles.

I moved to So Cal about a year and a half ago, and I’ve been surfing for about a year. I moved here from NYC, where I had lived for the last 7 years. I was doing comedy in NYC for 5 of those years, which was great, but I had had enough of the cold winters and NY attitude in general. Everyone claims that comics eventually have to move out west in order to have a successful career, so I decided to give it a 6-month trial. I hated it at first. I expected oceans and mountains and picturesque scenery, and arrived to find highways, strip malls and urbanization. I felt like I was in Jersey. I didn’t really realize you had to seek out the nice parts, so I spent the first 6 months in LA going back to the east coast as much as possible. Towards the end of that time period, I was finally getting into a groove....I was getting my foot in to the comedy business out here, and had been playing tennis and hiking, and me and my friend took a 2 hour surf lesson in Laguna Beach. I loved it. I took another lesson later that week. A week later I bought a wetsuit and a used surfboard. I decided to stay for 6 more months...

What was the catalyst that made you pick up the board and finally get out in the water?

There was no specific catalyst which got me to finally try surfing: my friend was going to take a lesson, and asked if we could take one together...so I really only went because they said we could do it together.

What has been the most challenging aspect of surfing for you?

The most challenging aspect of surfing has been learning to keep my head up and look down the line. I spent my first few months looking straight down, and nose diving in the middle of each wave What was the most dangerous or frightening thing that has happen to you while surfing?

The most dangerous thing that has happened to me was probably surfing on a day with a hard shore break, and falling hard headfirst. I’ve also seen someone get stung by a stingray, which was disconcerting. The incident that freaked me out most, however, was when a crab crawled up my leg and I couldn’t flick him off. I freaked out as if I was being attacked by a shark, which in turn freaked out everyone around me.

On the reverse what has been the most beautiful or exciting thing that has happen?

The most beautiful thing would be hard to isolate, there have been many. I mainly surf in the late afternoons, so I’ve seen many beautiful sunsets. I’ve seen many seals and dolphins and a sea otter...just being out in the ocean is almost a surreal experience.

What does surfing mean to you?

Surfing to me is a great way to get exercise, have fun, and get in touch with your thoughts. You’re exposed to many different elements (sun, land, seawater), and just can’t help but feeling somewhat exhilarated out there on your board. Even on days where I haven’t caught a single wave, I had a great time out in the water either by myself or with friends. It is both exciting and relaxing at the same time, and even though I discovered it a bit late in life, I’m truly grateful that I did.

Any advice for somebody thinking to start?

First of all, don’t let age stop you. I’ve been out in the water with people from age 5 to age 75. Secondly, don’t get discouraged. Lessons are deceiving... you’re usually on a giant foam board, and the instructor pushes you into the waves at the perfect moment, so when you go out on your own you might not be prepared for how difficult it is on your own. You’re going to eat it....a lot in the beginning. You just have to power through and keep learning...and when you finally start to get it on your own, you’ll never want to stop.

How long have you been surfing?

My brother taught me how to surf when I was about 10 years old, and have been in and out of surfing from since then.

What does surfing mean to you?

Being from a small beach community, surfing is more like a family thing. We all meet out in the water and have a good time.

Do you get anything spiritual out of it?

I’m not sure if I could say I get something “spiritual” out of surfing, but it does put me in a different state of mind.

Is surfing a cathartic sport, for you?

Yes, surfing is a cathartic sport for me, I always feel refreshed and renewed when I’m out in the ocean.

Favorite beach to surf?

SEAL BEACH FOR LIFE! Even if the waves aren’t huge, Seal is a family.

When is the best time to go surfing?

Morning seshes.

Long board or short board?

I always enjoy a laid back long board sesh, but sometimes just go for the best of both worlds with my 6’10”.

These paintings were all inspired by the traditional views of the main beaches in southern California. Lori wanted to take the customary views of the beaches and twist the lighting to create an almost surreal and enchanting environment. The viewer is engaged by the notably familiar composition but is further drawn into the scene by the dreamlike color scheme. Each one of these paintings were commissioned by a n individual with strong emotional ties and connections withe individual scenes. The Long Beach scene was commissioned by a couple who shared their first kiss along the boardwalk. The painting that captures the Newport beach tower number 48 was commissioned by a man who spent the days of his youth surfing by this tower.

Lori hopes that her fresh take on these recognizable scenes will renew the sense of pride that Californians have for their breathtaking shorelines and beaches.
